Abstract

Understanding and controlling the electronic properties of two-dimensional materials is crucial for their potential applications in nano- and optoelectronics. Monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides such as WS$_2$ have garnered significant interest due to their strong light-matter interaction and extreme sensitivity of the band structure to the presence of photogenerated electron-hole pairs. In this study, we investigate the transient electronic structure of monolayer WS$_2$ on a graphene substrate after resonant excitation of the A-exciton using time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. We observe a pronounced band structure renormalization including a substantial reduction of the transient band gap that is in good quantitative agreement with our {\it ab initio} theory that reveals the importance of both intrinsic WS$_2$ and extrinsic substrate contributions to the transient band structure of monolayer WS$_2$. Our findings not only deepen the fundamental understanding of band structure dynamics in two-dimensional materials but also offer valuable insights for the development of novel electronic and optoelectronic devices based on monolayer TMDs and their heterostructures with graphene., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

As demonstrated by the ATLAS New Small Wheel community with their MicroMegas (MM) design, resistive electrodes are now used in different detector types within the Micro Pattern Gaseous Detector family to improve their robustness or performance. The extended form of the Ramo-Shockley theorem for conductive media has been applied to a 1 M$\Omega$/$\Box$ 2D resistive strip bulk MM to calculate the signal's spreading over neighbouring channels using an 80 GeV/c muon track. For this geometry, the dynamic weighting potential was obtained numerically using a finite element solver by applying a junction condition and coordinate scaling technique to accurately represent the boundary conditions of a $10\times 10$ cm$^2$ active area. Using test beam measurements, the results of this model will be used to benchmark this microscopic modelling methodology for signal induction in resistive particle detectors., Comment: There are 6 pages and 4 figures. Abstract

The PICOSEC Micromegas precise timing detector is based on a Cherenkov radiator coupled to a semi-transparent photocathode and a Micromegas amplification structure. The first proof of concept single-channel small area prototype was able to achieve time resolution below 25 ps. One of the crucial aspects in the development of the precise timing gaseous detectors applicable in high-energy physics experiments is a modular design that enables large area coverage. The first 19-channel multi-pad prototype with an active area of approximately 10 cm$^2$ suffered from degraded timing resolution due to the non-uniformity of the preamplification gap. A new 100 cm$^2$ detector module with 100 channels based on a rigid hybrid ceramic/FR4 Micromegas board for improved drift gap uniformity was developed. Initial measurements with 80 GeV/c muons showed improvements in timing response over measured pads and a time resolution below 25 ps. More recent measurements with a new thinner drift gap detector module and newly developed RF pulse amplifiers show that the resolution can be enhanced to a level of 17~ps. This work will present the development of the detector from structural simulations, design, and beam test commissioning with a focus on the timing performance of a thinner drift gap detector module in combination with new electronics using an automated timing scan method.

Abstract

The PICOSEC Micromegas (MM) detector is a precise timing gaseous detector consisting of a Cherenkov radiator combined with a photocathode and a MM amplifying structure. A 100-channel non-resistive PICOSEC MM prototype with 10x10 cm^2 active area equipped with a Cesium Iodide (CsI) photocathode demonstrated a time resolution below 18 ps. The objective of this work is to improve the PICOSEC MM detector robustness aspects; i.e. integration of resistive MM and carbon-based photocathodes; while maintaining good time resolution. The PICOSEC MM prototypes have been tested in laboratory conditions and successfully characterised with 150 GeV/c muon beams at the CERN SPS H4 beam line. The excellent timing performance below 20 ps for an individual pad obtained with the 10x10 cm^2 area resistive PICOSEC MM of 20 MOhm/sq showed no significant time resolution degradation as a result of adding a resistive layer. A single-pad prototype equipped with a 12 nm thick Boron Carbide (B4C) photocathode presented a time resolution below 35 ps; opening up new possibilities for detectors with robust photocathodes. The results made the concept more suitable for the experiments in need of robust detectors with good time resolution.

Abstract

Ultrafast charge separation after photoexcitation is a common phenomenon in various van-der-Waals (vdW) heterostructures with great relevance for future applications in light harvesting and detection. Theoretical understanding of this phenomenon converges towards a coherent mechanism through charge transfer states accompanied by energy dissipation into strongly coupled phonons. The detailed microscopic pathways are material specific as they sensitively depend on the band structures of the individual layers, the relative band alignment in the heterostructure, the twist angle between the layers, and interlayer interactions resulting in hybridization. We used time- and angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy combined with tight binding and density functional theory electronic structure calculations to investigate ultrafast charge separation and recombination in WS$_2$-graphene vdW heterostructures. We identify several avoided crossings in the band structure and discuss their relevance for ultrafast charge transfer. We relate our own observations to existing theoretical models and propose a unified picture for ultrafast charge transfer in vdW heterostructures where band alignment and twist angle emerge as the most important control parameters., Comment: 8 pages, 5 figures

Abstract

we have conceived an extension of the R&D programme covering the period 2024 to 2028, i.e. again a 5-year period, however with 2024 as overlap year. This step was encouraged by the success of the current programme but also by the Europe-wide efforts to launch new Detector R&D collaborations in the framework of the ECFA Detector R&D Roadmap. We propose to continue our R&D programme with the main activities in essentially the same areas. All activities are fully aligned with the ECFA Roadmap and in most cases will be carried out under the umbrella of one of the new DRD collaborations. The program is a mix of natural continuations of the current activities and a couple of very innovative new developments, such as a radiation hard embedded FPGA implemented in an ASIC based on System-on-Chip technology. A special and urgent topic is the fabrication of Al-reinforced super-conducting cables. Such cables are a core ingredient of any new superconducting magnet such as BabyIAXO, PANDA, EIC, ALICE-3 etc. Production volumes are small and demands come in irregular intervals. Industry (world-wide) is no longer able and willing to fabricate such cables. The most effective approach (technically and financially) may be to re-invent the process at CERN, together with interested partners, and offer this service to the community.

Abstract

The opto-electronic properties of semiconducting 2D materials can be flexibly manipulated by engineering the atomic-scale environment. This can be done by including 2D materials in tailored van der Waals (vdW) stacks, whose optical response is a function of the number and the type of adjacent 2D layers. This work reports a systematic investigation of the dielectric function of 2D semiconducting WS2 in various stacking configurations: monolayer, 3R/2H homobilayer, and WS2/MoS2 heterobilayer. Reliable, Kramers-Kronigconsistent dielectric functions are obtained for WS2 in each configuration by means of spectroscopic ellipsometry (SE) and related parametric optical modeling in a wide spectral range (1.55-3.10 eV). The results of SE are combined with photoluminescence and absorbance spectra to identify the spectral position of the main excitonic features in WS2, which manifest sizable redshifts depending on the stacking configuration. These results represent a consistent reference set for the dielectric function of WS2 in vdW stacking configurations of particular interest for the scientific and technological field, and can be fruitfully exploited for reliable predictions of the optical response of WS2-containing systems. Abstract

The combination of metallic nanostructures with two-dimensional transition metal dichalcogenides is an efficient way to make the optical properties of the latter more appealing for opto-electronic applications. In this work, we investigate the optical properties of monolayer WS 2 flakes grown by chemical vapour deposition and transferred onto a densely-packed array of plasmonic Au nanoparticles (NPs). The optical response was measured as a function of the thickness of a dielectric spacer intercalated between the two materials and of the system temperature, in the 75–350 K range. We show that a weak interaction is established between WS 2 and Au NPs, leading to temperature- and spacer-thickness-dependent coupling between the localized surface plasmon resonance of Au NPs and the WS 2 exciton. We suggest that the closely-packed morphology of the plasmonic array promotes a high confinement of the electromagnetic field in regions inaccessible by the WS 2 deposited on top. This allows the achievement of direct contact between WS 2 and Au while preserving a strong connotation of the properties of the two materials also in the hybrid system. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Hexagonal boron nitride (hBN), sometimes referred to as white graphene, receives growing interest in the scientific community, especially when combined into van der Waals (vdW) homo- and heterostacks, in which novel and interesting phenomena may arise. hBN is also commonly used in combination with two-dimensional (2D) semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs). The realization of hBN-encapsulated TMDC homo- and heterostacks can indeed offer opportunities to investigate and compare TMDC excitonic properties in various stacking configurations. In this work, we investigate the optical response at the micrometric scale of mono- and homo-bilayer WS 2 grown by chemical vapor deposition and encapsulated between two single layers of hBN. Imaging spectroscopic ellipsometry is exploited to extract the local dielectric functions across one single WS 2 flake and detect the evolution of excitonic spectral features from monolayer to bilayer regions. Exciton energies undergo a redshift by passing from hBN-encapsulated single layer to homo-bilayer WS 2 , as also confirmed by photoluminescence spectra. Our results can provide a reference for the study of the dielectric properties of more complex systems where hBN is combined with other 2D vdW materials into heterostructures and are stimulating towards the investigation of the optical response of other technologically-relevant heterostacks., (Creative Commons Attribution license.)
