Background: Vascular access is a rapidly evolving field in modern healthcare that presents challenges across diverse clinical settings. Recent data indicate shortcomings in peripheral vascular access care for patients and nurses in Portugal. Objective: Given the ongoing challenges faced by Portuguese nurses in providing quality care to patients requiring peripheral intravenous access, we aim to identify and discuss potential ways forward in this field Main topics under analysis: The advancement of the field in Portugal involves the development of a clinical standard of care for peripheral intravenous catheterization in pediatric and adult patients, as well as the formal recognition of vascular access as an enhanced nursing competency. Additionally, a long-term focus on institutional initiatives to establish permanent Vascular Access Specialist Teams in Portuguese primary and tertiary care settings is recommended. Conclusion: The proposed pathways are consistent with the current evidence-based, patient-centered nursing care paradigm, as well as with international calls to action on fostering efficient, sustainable, and safe patient care.

Objective To outline and examine what evidence exists related to nurses’ and midwives’ experiences of participating in clinical supervision.Introduction The practice of clinical supervision is increasingly prevalent in nursing and midwifery, yet disparity remains in relation to professionals’ understanding and experience of this clinical support and how it is implemented in practice. This scoping review will identify the available evidence and gaps in knowledge that exist in relation to nurses’ and midwives’ experience of this practice and examine how the various forms are defined in the literature.Methods and analysis Comprehensive searches of CINAHL Complete, MEDLINE (EBSCO), PsycINFO (EBSCO), Embase, Scopus and the Cochrane Library will be carried out. Grey literature will also be searched and all results will be screened independently by two reviewers using identified inclusion and exclusion criteria. All empirical data that identify and report nurses’ and midwives’ experiences of clinical supervision will be included in the review. Studies that include other health and social care professionals will be excluded where the nursing and midwifery cohort is not reported independently. Data from all relevant studies will be extracted using a validated adapted data extraction form. Our review will be guided by the Joanne Briggs Institute Methodology and findings will be guided by the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses Protocols Extension for Scoping Reviews statement.Ethics and dissemination This review does not require ethical approval. Our dissemination strategy includes peer-reviewed publication, presentation and conferences and sharing through stakeholder networks.

Abstract Background Clinical psychomotor skills training is a core component of undergraduate nursing education. Performing technical skills competently involves the use of cognitive and motor function. The training of these technical skills is typically carried out in clinical simulation laboratories. Peripheral intravenous catheter/cannula insertion is an example of a technical skill. It is the most common invasive procedure performed in the healthcare environment. Owing to unacceptable clinical risk and complications to patients, it is imperative that practitioners performing these skills are trained effectively to provide patients with best practice and high-quality care. Technologies identified as innovative teaching methods to help train students in this skill and in the skill of venepuncture include virtual reality, hypermedia and simulators. However, little high-quality evidence exists to confirm such educational approaches are effective. Methods/design This study is a single-centre, non-blinded, two-group, pre-test and post-test randomised control trial. The randomised control trial will investigate whether a formal structured self-evaluation of videoed performance (experimental group) has an impact on nursing students’ peripheral intravenous cannulation knowledge, performance and confidence. The control group will also be videoed performing the skill but they will not view or self-evaluate their videoed performance. The peripheral intravenous cannulation procedures will be carried out in a clinical simulation laboratory using a task trainer. The data collection tools will be completed online using survey forms. Students will be randomised into the experimental group or into the control group using simple random sampling. The primary outcome measures the nursing students’ knowledge level of the skill of peripheral intravenous cannulation insertion. Secondary outcomes evaluate procedural competence and self-reported confidence and practices in the clinical environment. Discussion This randomised control trial will investigate whether this pedagogical approach, using video modelling and self-evaluation, will positively influence students’ knowledge, confidence and performance in the skill of peripheral intravenous cannulation. Evaluating such teaching strategies using stringent methodologies may be impactful in influencing the training provided to healthcare practitioners. Trial registration The randomised control trial detailed in this article is an educational research study and so does not fall under the ICMJE definition of a clinical trial as “any research project that prospectively assigns people or a group of people to an intervention, with or without concurrent comparison or control groups, to study the relationship between a health-related intervention and a health outcome”.

Background: While low sodium intake (40 years with stable blood pressure, unchanged anti-hypertensive medications, willing to modify diet and provided written informed consent. Participants were excluded for abnormal sodium handling, heart failure, high dose diuretics, immunosuppression, pregnancy/lactation, postural hypotension, cognitive impairment, high or low body mass index (BMI) or inclusion in another trial. STICK participants had estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) 30-60ml/min/1.73m2 and were excluded for acute kidney Injury, rapidly declining eGFR; known glomerular disease or current use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. For COSIP, participants were excluded for known kidney or cardiovascular disease. Artificial intelligence (AI) technology in professional practice is regarded as the latest disruption to challenge ethical, societal, economic, and educational paradigms. It is becoming a contemporary narrative in our healthcare and educational discourse as it is thought to improve decision-making, education, patient care, and service delivery. If such benefits are to be realized it is important to ensure that our understanding of AI is underpinned with curricula to educate healthcare professionals about AI. Practitioners can then be better informed to participate fully in digital initiatives in their field. Few if any studies articulate a clear process in curricula design for professional practice and healthcare education. Therefore, an understanding of real-world applications of AI education for most professions is limited. As a result, there is an imperative to establish a sustainable learning space for professional healthcare practice education. This paper presents novel experiences, within a virtual lab environment, for the application of AI in healthcare. We identify and problematize insights into the AI competencies required for AI in professional healthcare practice education. With reference to our novel living lab titled, the Home Health Project, we present an interconnected case study model that suggest theoretical underpinning and opportunities to develop practitioner education pedagogy using AI concepts, concluding with a three-step proposal when delivering AI curriculum for this context.

Peripheral intravenous cannulation and venipuncture are among the most common invasive procedures in health care and are not without risks or complications. The aim of this study was to evaluate the current training provided to nursing and midwifery undergraduate students. Student knowledge, attitude, practice, and performance regarding these procedural skills were assessed. A knowledge, attitude, and practices survey was disseminated to final year nursing and midwifery students as the first phase of this study. For the second phase of the study, nursing students were video recorded and then observed performing the skill of peripheral intravenous cannulation in a simulated environment. Thirty-eight nursing and midwifery students completed the survey, and 66 nursing students participated in the observation study. Descriptive statistics were performed. The mean knowledge score was 7.2 out of 15.0, (standard deviation [SD] = 2.4), and the mean attitude score was 10.20 out of 18.00 (SD = 4.79). Qualitative data from the survey were categorized to demonstrate specific areas of focus for improving the training. The mean performance score was 16.20 out of 28.00 (SD = 2.98). This study provides valuable input to developing and enhancing evidence-based curricula.
