Search

Van der Waals (vdW) materials are becoming increasingly popular in scientific and industrial applications because of their unique mixture of record electronic, optical, and mechanical properties. However, nanostructuring of vdW materials is still in its infancy and strongly depends on the specific vdW crystal. As a result, the universal self-assembled technology of vdW materials nanostructuring opens vast technological prospects. This work demonstrates an express and universal synthesis method of vdW nanoparticles with well-defined geometry using femtosecond laser ablation and fragmentation. The disarming simplicity of the technique allows us to create nanoparticles from over 50 vdW precursor materials covering transition metal chalcogenides, MXenes, and other vdW materials. Obtained nanoparticles manifest perfectly defined crystalline structures and diverse shapes, from nanospheres to nanocubes and nanotetrahedrons. Thus, our work provides a new paradigm for vdW nanostructuring with a vast potential of tunability for size, shape, and materials specific to the particular application., Comment: 24 pages, 6 figures

The appearance of direct electron detectors marked a new era for electron diffraction. Their high sensitivity and low noise opens the possibility to extend electron diffraction from transmission electron microscopes (TEM) to lower energies such as those found in commercial scanning electron microscopes (SEM).The lower acceleration voltage does however put constraints on the maximum sample thickness and it is a-priori unclear how useful such a diffraction setup could be. On the other hand, nanoparticles are increasingly appearing in consumer products and could form an attractive class of naturally thin samples to investigate with this setup.In this work we present such a diffraction setup and discuss methods to effectively collect and process diffraction data from dispersed crystalline nanoparticles in a commercial SEM instrument. We discuss ways to drastically reduce acquisition time while at the same time lowering beam damage and contamination issues as well as providing significant data reduction leading to fast processing and modest data storage needs. These approaches are also amenable to TEM and could be especially useful in the case of beam-sensitive objects., Comment: 16 pages, 9 figures

The results of measurements in two series, each series of 4 Runs and about 50 days each Run, are presented. A multi-cathode counter with an iron cathode is used in these measurements. In both series we have observed some excess in count rates in sidereal time while no excess has been observed in terrestrial time. In the first series from 27.12.22 to 24.07.23 we have observed the excess in the period between 8 a.m. and 12 a.m. of sidereal time with a confidence level more than 6 \sigma, in the second series from 21.09.23 to 03.04.24 in the period between 6 p.m. and 10 p.m. of sidereal time with a confidence level more than 4 \sigma. The fact that in terrestrial time we do not observe a similar effect as in sidereal time suggests that probably this effect is of galactic origin and that this may be caused by dark photons. Building a practical quantum processor involves integrating millions of physical qubits along with the necessary components for individual qubit manipulation and readout. Arrays of gated silicon spins offer a promising route toward achieving this goal. Optimized radio frequency resonators with high internal quality factor are based on superconducting inductors and enable fast spin readout. All-electrical spin control and gate-dispersive readout remove the need for additional device components and simplify scaling. However, superconducting high-Q tank circuits are susceptible to crosstalk induced ringup from electrical qubit control pulses, which causes fluctuations of the quantum dot potential and is suspected to degrade qubit performance. Here, we report on the coherent and all-electrical control of a hole spin qubit at 1.5K, integrated into a silicon fin field-effect transistor and connected to a niobium nitride nanowire inductor gate-sensor. Our experiments show that qubit control pulses with their broad range of higher harmonics ring up the tank when the control pulse spectrum overlaps with the tank resonance. This can cause a reduction of the readout visibility if the tank ringing amplitude exceeds the excited state splitting of the quantum dot, lifting Pauli spin blockade and thus leading to state preparation and measurement errors. We demonstrate how to circumvent these effects by engineering control pulses around the tank resonances. In this paper, I apply linguistic methods of analysis to non-linguistic data, chess plays, metaphorically equating one with the other and seeking analogies. Chess game notations are also a kind of text, and one can consider the records of moves or positions of pieces as words and statements in a certain language. In this article I show how word embeddings (word2vec) can work on chess game texts instead of natural language texts. I don't see how this representation of chess data can be used productively. It's unlikely that these vector models will help engines or people choose the best move. But in a purely academic sense, it's clear that such methods of information representation capture something important about the very nature of the game, which doesn't necessarily lead to a win., Comment: 14 pages, 7 figures

The dominant contribution to the energy relaxation of state-of-the-art superconducting qubits is often attributed to their coupling to an ensemble of material defects which behave as two-level systems. These defects have varying microscopic characteristics which result in a large range of observable defect properties such as resonant frequencies, coherence times and coupling rates to qubits $g$. Here, we investigate strategies to mitigate losses to the family of defects that strongly couple to qubits ($g/2\pi\ge$ 0.5 MHz). Such strongly coupled defects are particularly detrimental to the coherence of qubits and to the fidelities of operations relying on frequency excursions, such as flux-activated two-qubit gates. To assess their impact, we perform swap spectroscopy on 92 frequency-tunable qubits and quantify the spectral density of these strongly coupled modes. We show that the frequency configuration of the defects is rearranged by warming up the sample to room temperature, whereas the total number of defects on a processor tends to remain constant. We then explore methods for fabricating qubits with a reduced number of strongly coupled defect modes by systematically measuring their spectral density for decreasing Josephson junction dimensions and for various surface cleaning methods. Our results provide insights into the properties of strongly coupled defect modes and show the benefits of minimizing Josephson junction dimensions to improve qubit properties.

Burrows' Delta was introduced in 2002 and has proven to be an effective tool for author attribution. Despite the fact that these are different languages, they mostly belong to the same grammatical type and use the same graphic principle to convey speech in writing: a phonemic alphabet with word separation using spaces. The question I want to address in this article is how well this attribution method works with texts in a language with a different grammatical structure and a script based on different principles. There are fewer studies analyzing the effectiveness of the Delta method on Chinese texts than on texts in European languages. I believe that such a low level of attention to Delta from sinologists is due to the structure of the scientific field dedicated to medieval Chinese poetry. Clustering based on intertextual distances worked flawlessly. Delta produced results where clustering showed that the samples of one author were most similar to each other, and Delta never confused different poets. Despite the fact that I used an unconventional approach and applied the Delta method to a language poorly suited for it, the method demonstrated its effectiveness. Tang dynasty poets are correctly identified using Delta, and the empirical pattern observed for authors writing in European standard languages has been confirmed once again., Comment: 2 figures

Smart signal processing approaches using Artificial Intelligence are gaining momentum in NMR applications. In this study, we demonstrate that AI offers new opportunities beyond tasks addressed by traditional techniques. We developed and trained several artificial neural networks in our new toolbox Magnetic Resonance with Artificial intelligence (MR-Ai) to solve three "impossible" problems: quadrature detection using only Echo (or Anti-Echo) modulation from the traditional Echo/Anti-Echo scheme; accessing uncertainty of signal intensity at each point in a spectrum processed by any given method; and defining a reference-free score for quantitative access of NMR spectrum quality. Our findings highlight the potential of AI techniques to revolutionize NMR processing and analysis.

Vacuum fluctuations are a fundamental and irremovable property of a quantized electromagnetic field. These fluctuations are the cause of the Casimir effect -- mutual attraction of two electrically neutral metallic plates in vacuum in the absence of any other interactions. For most geometries and materials, Casimir effect is strictly attractive, leading to the only stable equilibrium configuration with merged plates. Recent observation showed, however, that this unavoidable vacuum-induced attraction can be mitigated by the presence of electrostatic repulsion produced by the formation of double electric layers, and a stable equilibrium between two charged metallic plates in a solution of an organic salt can be reached. Here, we study theoretically in details equilibrium configurations and their dynamical behavior in the system of two parallel metallic films coupled by the Casimir and electrostatic interactions. We analyze the effect of various parameters of the system -- such as the salt concentartion and temperature -- on the equilibrium cavity thicknesses, inspect resonant properties of the resulting an-harmonic optomechanical system near equilibrium, and examine its stochastic dynamics under the influence of thermal fluctuations of the environment.

Borexino could efficiently distinguish between alpha and beta radiation in its liquid scintillator by the characteristic time profile of their scintillation pulse. This alpha/beta discrimination, first demonstrated at the tonne scale in the Counting Test Facility prototype, was used throughout the lifetime of the experiment between 2007 and 2021. With this method, alpha events are identified and subtracted from the beta-like solar neutrino events. This is particularly important in liquid scintillator as alpha scintillation is quenched many-fold. In Borexino, the prominent Po-210 decay peak was a background in the energy range of electrons scattered from Be-7 solar neutrinos. Optimal alpha-beta discrimination was achieved with a "multi-layer perceptron neural network", which its higher ability to leverage the timing information of the scintillation photons detected by the photomultiplier tubes. An event-by-event, high efficiency, stable, and uniform pulse shape discrimination was essential in characterising the spatial distribution of background in the detector. This benefited most Borexino measurements, including solar neutrinos in the \pp chain and the first direct observation of the CNO cycle in the Sun. In this paper, we report the results obtained in the PHoton ELectron EXperiment (PHELEX) during 208 days of measurements in the search for dark photons using a multi-cathode counter with an iron cathode. We observed a systematic excess of single-electron events in four runs, with a confidence level better than 5 sigma, in the time interval from 8-00 to 12-00 in sidereal time. The fact that we observe this effect in the stellar frame while detecting the excess of count rate in the solar frame in different time intervals is evidence that this effect is of galactic origin. In gate-based dispersive sensing, the response of a resonator attached to a quantum dot gate is detected by a reflected radio-frequency signal. This enables fast readout of spin qubits and tune up of arrays of quantum dots, but comes at the expense of increased susceptibility to crosstalk, as the resonator can amplify spurious signals and induce fluctuations in the quantum dot potential. We attach tank circuits with superconducting NbN inductors and internal quality factors $Q_{\mathrm{i}}$>1000 to the interdot barrier gate of silicon double quantum dot devices. Measuring the interdot transition in transport, we quantify radio-frequency crosstalk that results in a ring-up of the resonator when neighbouring plunger gates are driven with frequency components matching the resonator frequency. This effect complicates qubit operation and scales with the loaded quality factor of the resonator, the mutual capacitance between device gate electrodes, and with the inverse of the parasitic capacitance to ground. Setting qubit frequencies below the resonator frequency is expected to substantially suppress this type of crosstalk., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, supplementary information

Microplasmas can be used for a wide range of technological applications and to improve our understanding of fundamental physics. Scanning electron microscopy, on the other hand, provides insights into the sample morphology and chemistry of materials from the mm-down to the nm-scale. Combining both would provide direct insight into plasma-sample interactions in real-time and at high spatial resolution. Up till now, very few attempts in this direction have been made, and significant challenges remain. This work presents a stable direct current glow discharge microplasma setup built inside a scanning electron microscope. The experimental setup is capable of real-time in-situ imaging of the sample evolution during plasma operation and it demonstrates localized sputtering and sample oxidation. Further, the experimental parameters such as varying gas mixtures, electrode polarity, and field strength are explored and experimental $V$-$I$ curves under various conditions are provided. These results demonstrate the capabilities of this setup in potential investigations of plasma physics, plasma-surface interactions, and materials science and its practical applications. The presented setup shows the potential to have several technological applications, e.g., to locally modify the sample surface (e.g., local oxidation and ion implantation for nanotechnology applications) on the $\mu$m-scale., Comment: LG, DC, and RDM contributed equally to this work. We report the first measurement of CNO solar neutrinos by Borexino that uses the Correlated Integrated Directionality (CID) method, exploiting the sub-dominant Cherenkov light in the liquid scintillator detector. The directional information of the solar origin of the neutrinos is preserved by the fast Cherenkov photons from the neutrino scattered electrons, and is used to discriminate between signal and background. The directional information is independent from the spectral information on which the previous CNO solar neutrino measurements by Borexino were based. While the CNO spectral analysis could only be applied on the Phase-III dataset, the directional analysis can use the complete Borexino data taking period from 2007 to 2021. The absence of CNO neutrinos has been rejected with >5{\sigma} credible level using the Bayesian statistics. The directional CNO measurement is obtained without an external constraint on the $^{210}$Bi contamination of the liquid scintillator, which was applied in the spectral analysis approach. The final and the most precise CNO measurement of Borexino is then obtained by combining the new CID-based CNO result with an improved spectral fit of the Phase-III dataset. Including the statistical and the systematic errors, the extracted CNO interaction rate is $R(\mathrm{CNO})=6.7^{+1.2}_{-0.8} \, \mathrm{cpd/100 \, tonnes}$. Taking into account the neutrino flavor conversion, the resulting CNO neutrino flux at Earth is $\Phi_\mathrm{CNO}=6.7 ^{+1.2}_{-0.8} \times 10^8 \, \mathrm{cm^{-2} s^{-1}}$, in agreement with the high metallicity Standard Solar Models. The results described in this work reinforce the role of the event directional information in large-scale liquid scintillator detectors and open up new avenues for the next-generation liquid scintillator or hybrid neutrino experiments.

In this paper, we present a novel deep-learning model for deformable registration of ultrasound images and an unsupervised approach to training this model. Our network employs recurrent all-pairs field transforms (RAFT) and a spatial transformer network (STN) to generate displacement fields at online rates (apprx. 30 Hz) and accurately track pixel movement. We call our approach unsupervised recurrent all-pairs field transforms (U-RAFT). In this work, we use U-RAFT to track pixels in a sequence of ultrasound images to cancel out respiratory motion in lung ultrasound images. We demonstrate our method on in-vivo porcine lung videos. We show a reduction of 76% in average pixel movement in the porcine dataset using respiratory motion compensation strategy. We believe U-RAFT is a promising tool for compensating different kinds of motions like respiration and heartbeat in ultrasound images of deformable tissue.

This paper presents a deep-learning model for deformable registration of ultrasound images at online rates, which we call U-RAFT. As its name suggests, U-RAFT is based on RAFT, a convolutional neural network for estimating optical flow. U-RAFT, however, can be trained in an unsupervised manner and can generate synthetic images for training vessel segmentation models. We propose and compare the registration quality of different loss functions for training U-RAFT. We also show how our approach, together with a robot performing force-controlled scans, can be used to generate synthetic deformed images to significantly expand the size of a femoral vessel segmentation training dataset without the need for additional manual labeling. We validate our approach on both a silicone human tissue phantom as well as on in-vivo porcine images. We show that U-RAFT generates synthetic ultrasound images with 98% and 81% structural similarity index measure (SSIM) to the real ultrasound images for the phantom and porcine datasets, respectively. We also demonstrate that synthetic deformed images from U-RAFT can be used as a data augmentation technique for vessel segmentation models to improve intersection-over-union (IoU) segmentation performance

Collaborative robots must simultaneously be safe enough to operate in close proximity to human operators and powerful enough to assist users in industrial tasks such as lifting heavy equipment. The requirement for safety necessitates that collaborative robots are designed with low-powered actuators. However, some industrial tasks may require the robot to have high payload capacity and/or long reach. For collaborative robot designs to be successful, they must find ways of addressing these conflicting design requirements. One promising strategy for navigating this tradeoff is through the use of static balancing mechanisms to offset the robot's self weight, thus enabling the selection of lower-powered actuators. In this paper, we introduce a novel, 2 degree of freedom static balancing mechanism based on spring-loaded, wire-wrapped cams. We also present an optimization-based cam design method that guarantees the cams stay convex, ensures the springs stay below their extensions limits, and minimizes sensitivity to unmodeled deviations from the nominal spring constant. Additionally, we present a model of the effect of friction between the wire and the cam. Lastly, we show experimentally that the torque generated by the cam mechanism matches the torque predicted in our modeling approach. Our results also suggest that the effects of wire-cam friction are significant for non-circular cams.

Continuum robots suffer large deflections due to internal and external forces. Accurate modeling of their passive compliance is necessary for accurate environmental interaction, especially in scenarios where direct force sensing is not practical. This paper focuses on deriving analytic formulations for the compliance of continuum robots that can be modeled as Kirchhoff rods. Compared to prior works, the approach presented herein is not subject to the constant-curvature assumptions to derive the configuration space compliance, and we do not rely on computationally-expensive finite difference approximations to obtain the task space compliance. Using modal approximations over curvature space and Lie group integration, we obtain closed-form expressions for the task and configuration space compliance matrices of continuum robots, thereby bridging the gap between constant-curvature analytic formulations of configuration space compliance and variable curvature task space compliance. We first present an analytic expression for the compliance of a single Kirchhoff rod. We then extend this formulation for computing both the task space and configuration space compliance of a tendon-actuated continuum robot. We then use our formulation to study the tradeoffs between computation cost and modeling accuracy as well as the loss in accuracy from neglecting the Jacobian derivative term in the compliance model. Finally, we experimentally validate the model on a tendon-actuated continuum segment, demonstrating the model's ability to predict passive deflections with error below 11.5\% percent of total arc length.

The technique is described of the search for dark photons with a multicathode counter. The aim of experiment is to search for diurnal variations of the effect from conversion of dark photons at the surface of the metallic cathode. Style is an important concept in today's challenges in natural language generating. After the success in the field of image style transfer, the task of text style transfer became actual and attractive. Researchers are also interested in the tasks of style reproducing in generation of the poetic text. Evaluation of style reproducing in natural poetry generation remains a problem. I used 3 character-based LSTM-models to work with style reproducing assessment. All three models were trained on the corpus of texts by famous Russian-speaking poets. Samples were shown to the assessors and 4 answer options were offered, the style of which poet this sample reproduces. In addition, the assessors were asked how well they were familiar with the work of the poet they had named. Students studying history of literature were the assessors, 94 answers were received. It has appeared that accuracy of definition of style increases if the assessor can quote the poet by heart. Each model showed at least 0.7 macro-average accuracy. The experiment showed that it is better to involve a professional rather than a naive reader in the evaluation of style in the tasks of poetry generation, while lstm models are good at reproducing the style of Russian poets even on a limited training corpus., Comment: 6 pages, 2 tables

The search for neutrino events in correlation with gravitational wave (GW) events for three observing runs (O1, O2 and O3) from 09/2015 to 03/2020 has been performed using the Borexino data-set of the same period. We have searched for signals of neutrino-electron scattering with visible energies above 250 keV within a time window of 1000 s centered at the detection moment of a particular GW event. The search was done with three visible energy thresholds of 0.25, 0.8 and 3.0 MeV.Two types of incoming neutrino spectra were considered: the mono-energetic line and the spectrum expected from supernovae. The same spectra were considered for electron antineutrinos detected through inverse beta-decay (IBD) reaction. GW candidates originated by merging binaries of black holes (BHBH), neutron stars (NSNS) and neutron star and black hole (NSBH) were analysed separately. Additionally, the subset of most intensive BHBH mergers at closer distances and with larger radiative mass than the rest was considered. In total, follow-ups of 74 out of 93 gravitational waves reported in the GWTC-3 catalog were analyzed and no statistically significant excess over the background was observed. As a result, the strongest upper limits on GW-associated neutrino and antineutrino fluences for all flavors (\nu_e, \nu_\mu, \nu_\tau) have been obtained in the (0.5 - 5.0) MeV neutrino energy range., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures

This paper considers a combination of actuation tendons and measurement strings to achieve accurate shape sensing and direct kinematics of continuum robots. Assuming general string routing, a methodical Lie group formulation for the shape sensing of these robots is presented. The shape kinematics is expressed using arc-length-dependent curvature distributions parameterized by modal functions, and the Magnus expansion for Lie group integration is used to express the shape as a product of exponentials. The tendon and string length kinematic constraints are solved for the modal coefficients and the configuration space and body Jacobian are derived. The noise amplification index for the shape reconstruction problem is defined and used for optimizing the string/tendon routing paths, and a planar simulation study shows the minimal number of strings/tendons needed for accurate shape reconstruction. A torsionally stiff continuum segment is used for experimental evaluation, demonstrating mean (maximal) end-effector absolute position error of less than 2% (5%) of total length. Finally, a simulation study of a torsionally compliant segment demonstrates the approach for general deflections and string routings. We believe that the methods of this paper can benefit the design process, sensing and control of continuum and soft robots., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures. Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy has become a formidable tool for biochemistry and medicine. Although J-coupling carries essential structural information it may also limit the spectral resolution. Homonuclear decoupling remains a challenging problem. In this work, we introduce a new approach that uses a specific coupling value as prior knowledge, and Hankel property of exponential NMR signal to achieve the broadband heteronuclear decoupling using the low-rank method. Our results on synthetic and realistic HMQC spectra demonstrate that the proposed method not only effectively enhances resolution by decoupling, but also maintains sensitivity and suppresses spectral artefacts. The approach can be combined with the non-uniform sampling, which means that the resolution can be further improved without any extra acquisition time, Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures
