This article attempts to make transparent how, based on the ordonomic research program, one can contribute to objectify the Western discussion about the Ukraine war. The main argument is that the relationship management of antagonistic cooperation between East and West requires strategic thinking and strategic action and that highly emotionalized discourses can impair the ability of Western politics in this respect. If we are not careful, we are doing a moral disservice to our goal of a permanently peaceful coexistence with thoughtless reactions to a warlike aggression.

1972 erschien das Buch 'Die Grenzen des Wachstums' als Bericht an den Club of Rome. Diese Publikation ist außerordentlich einflussreich geworden. Sie hat das Denken über Wirtschaft und Umwelt mit einem wachstumskritischen Paradigma versorgt, das auch heute noch weit verbreitet ist und als Denkungsart den (welt -)gesellschaftspolitischen Diskurs gegen Wachstum, gegen Marktwirtschaft und letztlich auch gegen Demokratie einstellt. Das alternative Paradigma von einem 'Wachstum der Grenzen' propagiert keine Verzichtsethik, mutet den Menschen also nicht zu, Steigerungen ihres Lebensstandards vermeintlich höheren Zielen zu opfern. Stattdessen setzt diese Denkungsart auf den Problemlösungsmechanismus intensiven Wachstums: auf eine wissensgetriebene Entkopplung von Wohlstandsproduktion und Ressourcenverbrauch mittels Innovation. In 1972, the book "The Limits to Growth" was published as a report to the Club of Rome. This publication has become extraordinarily influential. It has provided public thought about the economy and the environment with a growth-critical paradigm that is still widespread today and, as a mental model, predisposes the political discourse of our (world) society against growth, against the market economy and ultimately also against democracy. The alternative paradigm of a " Growth of Limits" does not propagate an ethics of renunciation, so it does not expect people to sacrifice increases in their standard of living in favor of supposedly higher goals. Instead, this menta l model relies on the problem-solving mechanism of intensive growth: on a knowledge-driven decoupling of wealth production and resource consumption through innovation.

Am 24. Februar 2022 begann Russland einen völkerrechtswidrigen Angriffskrieg gegen die Ukraine. Seitdem wird darüber tagtäglich medial berichtet und moralisch geurteilt. Dieser Artikel untersucht, welche Wahrnehmungsmuster die politische Diskussion im deutschen Sprachraum dominieren - und welche Probleme damit verbunden sein könnten. Die Analyse erfolgt aus der Perspektive des ordonomischen Forschungsprogramms. On February 24, 2022, Russia launched a war of aggression against Ukraine. Day by day, this violation of international law has been covered in media reports and morally judged. This article examines which patterns of perception dominate the political discussion in the German-speaking world - and why these patterns might be problematic. The analysis is carried out from the perspective of the ordonomic research program.

This article takes the perspective of the ordonomic research program on economic ethics. It discusses the strengths and weaknesses of capitalism - and of the critique of capitalism. The main argument is that many people are unclear about the functioning of a competitive market economy and that this is precisely why many negative moral judgments about capitalism are poorly informed. In particular, it is often overlooked that a capitalist social order opens up completely new options for the realization of moral concerns, especially for solidarity with strangers, which can be characterized as a transition from love of neighbour to love of the farthest.

In 2012, civil society organizations raised suspicions that the operations of index funds in the futures markets for agricultural commodities had caused or intensified hunger crises in poor countries. They raised radical demands to ban such agricultural speculation or at least to severely restrict it via regulation. This article traces the debate and explains why this civil society alarm was - and still is - to be classified as a false alarm . It discusses the economic and ethical arguments that were put forward against these demands at the time. It also raises the question of how the self-correction capacities of the civil society sector could be strengthened.

Dieser Artikel reagiert kritisch auf die Forderung einer Gruppe namhafter Wirtschaftsethiker, Unternehmen sollten um ihrer gesellschaftlichen Verantwortung willen sämtliche Geschäftsbeziehungen mit Russland sofort und beinahe ausnahmslos unterbinden. Gegen diese Forderung werden drei Einwände geltend gemacht. Erstens ist unklar, ob eine solche Eskalation von Boykott und Embargo Leid und Tod in der Ukraine (und auch anderswo) vermindert oder vermehrt. Zweitens werden Unternehmen mit dieser Forderung überfordert, weil von ihnen nicht erwartet werden kann, das s sie unter Wettbewerbsbedingungen in der Lage sind, eine solch umfassende Kartell-Lösung zu organisieren. Drittens sollte Wirtschaftsethik darauf achten, mit eigenen Beiträgen die Spirale von Emotionalisierung, Moralisierung und Dichotomisierung realer Konfliktlagen nicht weiter voranzutreiben. This article reacts critically to the claim of a group of well-known business ethicists that companies should immediately and almost without exception stop all business relations with Russia for the sake of their social responsibility. Three objections are raised against this claim. First, it is unclear whether such an escalation of boycott and embargo would reduce or increase suffering and death in Ukraine (and elsewhere). Secondly, given competitive markets, companies are overchallenged with the task of organizing such a comprehensive cartel solution. Thirdly, business ethics should be careful not to further advance the spiral of emotionalization, moralization and dichotomization of real conflict situations with its own contributions.

With regard to the Ukraine war, and in particular with regard to the economic sanctions directed against Russia, this article discusses what should be done - and what should be refrained from - in order to effect a sensible strategy of the West aimed at peace.

This article sketches an ordonomic approach to the ethics of a competitive market economy as well as an ordonomic approach to business ethics attuned to this theoretical framework. Based on this integrative approach to business within a market economy, this paper identifies management competencies that management education should focus on. The main proposition is that while traditional optimization competence remains important it should be supplemented by two governance competencies , argumentative clarification and institutional (re-)configuration, that managers can use to exercise ordo responsibility for the company.

On the one hand, NGOs fulfil important economic and political functions. They provide goods and services. And they are involved in public advocacy. On the other hand, they sometimes contribute to discourse failure. And occasionally there are even abuses such as donation scandals or mistreatment of employees or clients. From an ordonomic perspective, it is important to strengthen the self-correcting powers ofthe NGO sector.

Das Moralparadoxon der Moderne besteht darin, dass die moderne (Welt-)Gesellschaft - wie keine Gesellschaftsformation vor ihr - wichtige moralische Anliegen verwirklichen kann und ansatzweise auch tatsächlich verwirklicht, während sie - wie keine Gesellschaftsformation vor ihr - auf moralische Vorbehalte stößt, die bis zur radikalen Ablehnung ihrer Funktionslogik reichen können. Das Forschungsprogramm der Ordonomik interpretiert dieses Paradoxon als das Ergebnis einer Moralkonfusion, die primär dadurch zustande kommt, dass die auf systemischen Wettbewerbsanreizen basierende Funktionsweise der modernen Gesellschaft in weiten Teilen der Bevölkerung unverstanden geblieben ist. Nach ordonomischem Verständnis gehört es zu den wichtigsten Aufgaben der Ordnungsethik, einer verfehlten Anwendung handlungslogischer Zurechnungsmodi entgegenzuwirken und durch geeignete Aufklärungs- sowie Steuerungsargumente konstruktiv daran mitzuwirken, Sozialstruktur und Semantik wechselseitig aneinander anzupassen, damit gesellschaftliche Lernprozesse zur Verwirklichung moralischer Anliegen besser gelingen. The moral paradox of modernity consists of the phenomenon that - unlike any historic predecessor - modern (world) society is able to make important moral desiderata a reality, while - again unlike any historic predecessor - it meets moral reservations, which might even take the form of a radical rejection of its functional logic. The ordonomic research program interprets this paradox as the outcome of a moral confusion that primarily results from misunderstanding the functional logic of modern society and the underlying systemic incentives of competitive orders. From an ordonomic perspective, the primary task of order ethics is to counteract misplaced attributions of action-logic arguments and to contribute to mutual adaptions of social structure and semantics in order to support societal learning processes in implementing moral progress.

Dieser Artikel diente als Textgrundlage für eine 'Keynote Address', die ich am 26. Juni 2020 als Video-Vortrag zum IAMO Forum 2020 beigesteuert habe. Sie geht der Frage nach, inwiefern moralische Gefühle und helfen bzw. daran hindern, vernünftige Strategien zu finden, mit denen sich die Corona-Krise bewältigen lässt. It discusses whether our moral sentiments help or impede finding reasonable strategies to cope with the Corona crisis. The text formulates hypotheses about the functionality and dysfunctionality of both individual and collective morality. Furthermore, it provides some suggestions for a prudent world-domestic institutionalization of risk-management to counter global challenges.

Dieses Interview erläutert das Moralparadoxon der Moderne und seine Bedeutung für die demokratische Wirtschafts- und Gesellschaftspolitik. Auf diese Weise bietet es Einblicke in das 'ordonomische' Forschungsprogramm: welche Fragen gestellt werden, wie diese Fragen gestellt werden und wie die Antworten beschaffen sind, die sich mit der ordonomischen Methode erarbeiten lassen. Der inhaltliche Schwerpunkt dieses Interviews liegt darauf, die Bedeutung (und insbesondere die moralischen Implikationen) von Innovationen für die moderne post-malthusianische Wachstumsgesellschaft hervorzuheben. This interview explains the paradox of modernity and discusses its implication for democratic politics that shapes the economy and, more generally, society. It thus offers insights into the 'ordonomic' research program: which questions to pose, how to pose them, and how to answer these questions using the method of ordonomics. The interview emphasizes the significance (and, especially, the moral implications) of innovation for a modern, post-malthusian growth society.

The literature on nonprofit management has embraced the concept of “accountability” to target urgent challenges related to NGO probity and integrity, and there have been attempts in the literature to use rational-choice-based governance approaches to solve them. Although the existing principal–agent frameworks provide important insights, they are limited to the analysis of financial relationships between NGOs and donors. We contribute to the literature in developing a comprehensive rational-choice-based governance approach to analyze all stakeholder relationships of NGOs. Applying the research program of ordonomics, we unpack two fundamental interaction problems: (a) the “stakeholder dilemma” between the NGO and a single accountability holder as a one-sided social dilemma and (b) the “competition dilemma” among rival NGOs as a many-sided social dilemma. We show that improving NGO accountability in relation to intended beneficiaries, peer organizations, and the general public also requires identifying the underlying governance problem as a competition dilemma focusing on collective self-regulation as a solution.
