Abstract

Experimentally manipulating urban tree abundance and structure can help explore the complex and reciprocal interactions among people, biodiversity and the services urban forests provide to humans and wildlife.In this study we take advantage of scheduled urban tree removals to experimentally quantify the benefits that urban trees provide to humans and wildlife. Specifically, we aim to understand how trees affect: (1) bird and mammal abundance and diversity, as well as an ecological process (predation); and (2) people's perception responses, such as the importance that people assign to the trees, wildlife and the site.We designed two independent Before‐after‐control‐impact (BACI) experiments based on two sites where tree removals were occurring (impact sites): an urban park and a residential street, both located in the Greater Melbourne Area, Australia. We selected three control sites for each impact site, or four per experiment. Ecological data were collected through field surveys, and social data on people's perceptions through intercept questionnaires among park and street users. Data were analysed using a GLMMs to determine the combined effect of time (before and after) and treatment (impact and controls).At the urban park, the abundance of nectarivorous birds and possums both declined by 62% following tree removal, while invertebrate predation increased by 82.1%. The level of importance people assigned to the urban park and to the trees at the site decreased after tree removal, and people's attitudes towards tree planting became more positive, meaning more people wanted to plant more trees at the site.None of these changes were observed in the street experiment where fewer and smaller trees were removed, suggesting that effects may be highly specific to context, where factors such as tree volume, diversity and arrangement influence the magnitude of social–ecological effects observed.By demonstrating the social–ecological effect of removing urban trees, we provide evidence that urban trees provide critical habitat to urban wildlife and are perceived as an important aspect of the human experience of urban nature. 25. Who participates in green infrastructure initiatives and why? Comparing participants and non-participants in Philadelphia's GI programs.

Abstract

Green infrastructure (GI) refers to trees, rain gardens, rain barrels, and other features that address stormwater management, climate change and other challenges facing many cities. GI is often not equitably distributed across urban landscapes, making its benefits unevenly experienced. Cities have multiple initiatives focused on different types of GI in residential areas, including underserved neighborhoods, although there is potential for GI programs to serve more privileged neighborhoods. The goal of this study was to examine GI program participants and non-participants to better understand who participates in different types of residential GI programs and why. We surveyed residents who had previously participated in Philadelphia's GI programs as well as those who had not, comparing socio-demographics, knowledge-levels, environmental concerns, outdoor space preferences, motivations and barriers. We found that the GI program participants are on average younger, wealthier, more highly educated, and more likely to be White than our sample of residents who have not participated. Participants in tree programs have different socio-demographics and motivations as compared to those who installed green stormwater infrastructure. Future research should examine strategies to reach neighborhoods with different socioeconomic conditions and built environment characteristics, such as offering features appropriate for small properties with limited plantable space. Abstract

Resumen El aguacate Hass se transporta conservando la cadena de frío, y se madura de forma controlada en el mercado de destino. La calidad del fruto depende de factores precosecha, el momento de cosecha y los tratamientos poscosecha. En Colombia, a pesar del auge de la producción y exportación de frutos, no se tiene suficiente información sobre parámetros de calidad. Teniendo en cuenta lo anterior, el objetivo de este trabajo fue determinar algunos parámetros fisicoquímicos de interés en la calidad de fruto. Con ese fin, se cosecharon aguacates en tres momentos de madurez de cosecha, en fincas exportadoras en Antioquia, y luego se almacenaron y maduraron. Se simularon la temperatura y la humedad relativa de la cadena de exportación, así como la duración del envío al mercado europeo. La materia seca se consideró el indicador de cosecha, y se realizaron análisis de sólidos solubles, pH y acidez titulable como parámetros de calidad. El origen de los frutos, el momento de cosecha y el tiempo de almacenamiento ejercie ron un efecto significativo (p ≤ 0,05) en los parámetros fisicoquímicos del aguacate. Los grados Brix (5,07 a 7,26) y el pH (6,58 a 7,14) se incrementaron con el tiempo de almacenamiento hasta la semana cuatro, y después disminuyeron. En cambio, la acidez bajó (19,47 % a 9,24 %) en el transcurso del almacenamiento. Estos parámetros pueden ser indicadores de calidad, pero se requieren más estudios. Abstract Hass avocado is transported maintaining an unbroken cold chain and in the destination market, it is ripened under controlled conditions. Fruit quality depends on preharvest, factors, harvest time and postharvest treatments. Colombia has poor information on quality parameters despite the current growing and fruit export boom. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine some important fruit quality parameters. For that, Hass avocado fruits were harvested considering three maturity indexes form exporting orchards in Antioquia, where fruits were stored and ripened. Temperature, relative humidity and shipment times to the European market were simulated. Dry matter content was used as harvest index. Soluble solids, pH, and titratable acidity were analyzed as quality parameters. Fruit origin, harvest index and storage time had a significant effect on quality parameters of avocado (p ≤ 0.05). There was an increase in Brix degrees (5.07 to 7.26) and pH (6.58 to 7.14) throughout the storage time until the fourth week, where these decreased. In contrast, acidity dropped (19.47 to 9.24 %) with storage time. These quality parameters can be considered quality indicators; however, more studies are required.

Abstract

El problema de Molyneux presenta un reto interesante para la filosofía de la mente contemporánea. Este problema genera preguntas importantes acerca de la manera en la que representamos el espacio en la experiencia, la manera en que las modalidades sensoriales se integran y el significado mismo de los conceptos espaciales. Gareth Evans (1985) presenta una respuesta positiva al problema de Molyneux, que se basa en entender que el espacio está presentado en la experiencia de manera no-conceptual y que esto dota de significado a los conceptos espaciales. John Campbell critica la postura evansiana apelando a algunos constreñimientos sobre el concepto de experiencia y alegando que el contenido no-conceptual no puede ser tomado como el contenido de la experiencia. En el presente texto buscaré introducir una concepción del contenido no-conceptual, basada en la interpretación que Adrian Cussins hace de la obra de Evans. Luego, utilizaré esta noción de contenido no-conceptual para mostrar algunas maneras de salir al paso a algunas críticas de Campbell. Al final intentaré mostrar cuál es el alcance de las críticas de Campbell y cómo, de todas maneras, una noción de contenido no-conceptual puede ser importante para explicar nuestra concepción del espacio en la experiencia. Molyneux’s problem presents an interesting challenge for contemporary philosophy of mind. It brings about important questions concerning the way we represent space in experience, the way in which sensory modalities are integrated and the meaning of spatial concepts. Gareth Evans (1985) presents a positive answer to Molyneux’s problem, claiming that space is presented in experience in a non-conceptual manner, and that such presentation endows spatial concepts with meaning. John Campbell criticizes Evans’ posture appealing to some constraints on the concept of experience, to claim that non-conceptual content cannot be taken as the content of experience. In this paper I will introduce a notion of non-conceptual content based on Adrian Cussins’ interpretation of Evans’ work. Then, I will use this notion of non-conceptual content to suggest some escape routes from Campbell’s criticisms. At the end, I will try to show which is the real scope of Campbell’s criticisms and how, anyway, a notion of non-conceptual content could be important to explain our conception of space in experience.
