5. Spatiotemporal Variability in the Hydrological Regimes and Water Resources of the Ouham River Basin at Batangafo, Central African Republic.

Abstract

This paper examines the effect of rainfall decline on water resources in each sub-basin (Bozoum: 8100 km2 and Bossangoa: 22,800 km2) and at the outlet of Batangafo (43,650 km2) over the 1951–1995 period, due to a lack of measurements since 1996. Annual, monthly, and daily series of rainfall and discharges were subjected to statistical tests (rainfall and flow indices, SPI, search for ruptures/breaks, depletion coefficient, and potential groundwater discharge) to present and discuss the rainfall variability impact on the water resources of the whole basin. The average rainfall per sub-basin decreases from the west to the east according to the Ouham river direction: 1423 mm at Bozoum, 1439 mm at Bossangoa, and 1393 mm at Batangafo, the main outlet. The SPI approach provides evidence of a moderate to normal drought in the whole basin in the 1980s, mainly compared to the 1970s. Thus, deficient breaks in the rainfall series of the Ouham Basin at Batangafo were noticed in 1967 (Bossangoa and Batangafo) and 1969 (Bozoum). A declining rainfall of −5% on average tended to have the highest impact on the runoff deficit, from about −30 to −43%. The deficit seems more important from west to east, and is also high over the groundwater in each outlet (−33% at Bozoum, −29% at Bossangoa, and −31% at Batangafo) in the 1986–1995 period, despite rainfall recovery in 1991 having generated a flow increase in 1995 at Bossangoa as well as at Batangafo. At the same time, Chari/Logone at Ndjamena recorded critical discharges in both 1987 (313 m3/s) and 1990 (390 m3/s) before they increased, such as on the Ouham. These results demonstrate the decline in water resources in the Ouham River, and their direct impact on the water level of the Chari River and Lake Chad in the targeted period. 15. Inverted phenology of Faidherbia albida paced with the dynamics of the water table

Abstract

Faidherbia albida is an emblematic species of agro-sylvo-pastoralism in African semi-arid areas. It combines inverted phenology (strong growth, N-fixation and production of highly palatable fodder during the dry season, ideal for livestock), defoliation during the rainy season (ideal for minimizing competition with crops) and use of deep resources mainly (riparian in its natural habitat, phreatophyte in parklands, deeply rooted, avoiding drought stress, using mostly groundwater (isotopic evidence), ideal for recycling). What could drive the inverted phenology then? Past research most often sought to correlate its peculiar phenology with climate variables, but hardly considered its deep roots and phreatophyte behavior. We set up a collaborative observatory (Faidherbia-Flux ) in a Senegal parkland in 2018 and monitored the foliar phenology of 15 adult trees (LAI2000), radial growth, sap flow and wood water content (capacitive probes). We also monitored the dynamics of soil humidity (TDR profiles) and water table fluctuations (5-6 m, piezometers). Drainage did reach the water table, but its maximum level was delayed till the end of the wet season, corresponding to the time when Faidherbia emitted new leaves. 100% foliage was maintained until the end of December, concurrently with a maximum growth, sap flow and water table level. From January to July (driest period), we observed a slow decrease in the water table level, foliage and transpiration, all reaching minima by the end of July (start of the defoliated phase), but no drought stress. Interestingly, wood rehydrated till end of the rainy season (September-October). Considering such coincidences between deep hydrological (delayed rewatering), wood rehydratation and phenological phases (inverted phenology), we suggest that this deeply rooted and phreatophyte species adjusts its phenology according to the water table and wood water content, shedding leaves when those levels reached minimum and bursting only when they resumed to maximum.

International audience; Due to global change, cities of the future will have to deal with more intense runoff and longer drought sequences, in addition to a growing urban and peri-urban population. French Mediterranean cities, such as Toulon, are already densely urbanised and exposed to the effects of global warming. The adaptation of their infrastructures is problematic. Cities with high development potential, such as Dakar, offer the opportunity to imagine other solutions for the management of water resources and its extremes in the context of global change. In particular, it is a question of managing the flows of water and substances linked to intense runoff events according to an ecohydrological logic that makes it possible to reduce environmental risks and increase social and economic benefits. To do this, we use a hydrologically-based geomatics model (IRIP) that produces predictive maps of areas of generation, transfer and accumulation of intense runoff and associated nutrients. This allows us to target effective intervention areas to reduce risks and increase water resources, for example by simulating land use change in appropriate locations and at the same time stimulating specific biological processes. The fundamental principle of ecohydrology is to balance energy flows with biological metabolic flows at the subcatchment scale. The mapping of intense runoff processes is a first step illustrated in this article for the cities of Toulon and Dakar. This first step is part of the Dakar'2030 project, which aims to rethink urban development and adapt it to climate change.; En raison du changement global, les villes du futur devront faire face à des ruissellements plus intenses et à des séquences de sécheresse plus longues, en plus d'une population urbaine et périurbaine croissante. Les villes méditerranéennes françaises, comme Toulon, sont déjà densément urbanisées et exposées aux effets du réchauffement climatique. L'adaptation de leurs infrastructures est problématique. Les villes à fort potentiel de développement, comme Dakar, offrent l'opportunité d'imaginer d'autres solutions pour la gestion des ressources en eau et de ses extrêmes dans le contexte du changement global. Il s'agit notamment de gérer les flux d'eau et de substances liés aux événements de ruissellement intenses selon une logique écohydrologique qui permet de réduire les risques environnementaux et d'augmenter les bénéfices sociaux et économiques. Pour ce faire, nous utilisons un modèle géomatique basé sur l'hydrologie (IRIP) qui produit des cartes prédictives des zones de génération, de transfert et d'accumulation du ruissellement intense et des nutriments associés. Cela nous permet de cibler des zones d'intervention efficaces pour réduire les risques et augmenter les ressources en eau, par exemple en simulant un changement d'utilisation des terres dans des endroits appropriés et en stimulant en même temps des processus biologiques spécifiques. Le principe fondamental de l'écohydrologie est d'équilibrer les flux d'énergie avec les flux métaboliques biologiques à l'échelle du sous-bassin versant. La cartographie des processus de ruissellement intense est une première étape illustrée dans cet article pour les villes de Toulon et de Dakar. Cette première étape s'inscrit dans le cadre du projet Dakar'2030, qui vise à repenser le développement urbain et à l'adapter au changement climatique.

Abstract

International audience; Abstract Here, we simulate carbon dioxide (CO2) sequestration in 300 major world river basins (about 70% of global surface area) through carbonates dissolution and silicate hydrolysis. For each river basin, the daily timescale impacts under both the RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5 climate scenarios were assessed relative to a historic baseline (1969-1999) using a cascade of models accounting for the hydrological evolution under climate change scenarios. Here we show that global temporal evolution of the CO2 uptake presents a general increase in the annual amount of CO2 consumed from 0.247 Pg C·y-1 to 0.261 and 0.273 Pg C·y-1, respectively for RCP 2.6 and RCP 8.5. Besides, despite showing a general increase for the global daily carbon sequestration, both climate scenarios present a decrease between June and August. Such projected changes have been mapped and evaluated against changes in hydrology, identifying hot spots and moments for the annual and seasonal periods.

Abstract

The Paris Climate Agreements and Sustainable Development Goals, signed by 197 countries, present agendas and address key issues for implementing multi-scale responses for sustainable development under climate change-an effort that must involve local, regional, national, and supra-national stakeholders. In that regard, Continental Carbon Sequestration (CoCS) and conservation of carbon sinks are recognized increasingly as having potentially important roles in mitigating climate change and adapting to it. Making that potential a reality will require indicators of success for various stakeholders from multidisciplinary backgrounds, plus promotion of long-term implementation of strategic action towards civil society (e.g. law and policy makers, economists, and farmers). To help meet those challenges, this discussion paper summarizes the state of the art and uncertainties regarding CoCS, taking an interdisciplinary, holistic approach toward understanding these complex issues. The first part of the paper discusses the carbon cycle's bio-geophysical processes, while the second introduces the plurality of geographical scales to be addressed when dealing with landscape management for CoCS. Abstract

Agro-silvo-pastoralism is a highly representative Land Use in Africa, often presented as a strategical option for ecological intensification of cropping systems towards food security and sovereignty.We set up a new long-term observatory (“Faidherbia-Flux”) to monitor and model microclimate, energy and C balance in Niakhar (central Senegal, rainfall ~ 500 mm), dominated by the multipurpose tree Faidherbia albida (12.5 m high; 7 tree ha-1; 5% canopy cover). Faidherbia is an attractive agroforestry tree species in order to partition fluxes, given that it is on leaf during the dry season (October-June) and defoliated during the wet season, just when crops take over. Pearl-millet and groundnut crops were conducted during the wet season, following annual rotation in a complex mixed mosaic of ca. 1 ha fields.Early 2018, we installed an eddy-covariance (EC) tower above the whole mosaic (EC1: 20 m high). A second EC system was displayed above the crop (EC2: 4.5 m if pearl-millet, 2.5 m if groundnut) in order to partition ecosystem EC fluxes between tree layer and crop+soil layers. Sap-flow was monitored from April 2019 onwards in 5 faidherbia trees (37 sensors).The ecosystem displayed moderate but significant daily CO2 and H2O fluxes during the dry season, when faidherbia (low canopy cover) was in leaf and the soil was evaporating. At the onset of the rainy season, the soil bursted a large amount of CO2. Just after the growth of pearl-millet in 2018, CO2 uptake by photosynthesis increased dramatically. However, this was largely compensated by high ecosystem respiration. Surprisingly in 2019, although the crop was turned to groundnut, the fluxes behaved pretty much the same as with pearl millet in 2018: comparing annual balances between 2018 and 2019 we obtained [454, 513] for rainfall (P: mm yr-1), [3500, 3486] for potential evapotranspiration (ETo: mm yr-1), [0.13, 0.15] for P/ETo, [470, 497] for actual evapotranspiration (E: mm yr-1), [2809, 2785] for net radiation (Rn: MJ m-2 yr-1), [1686, 1645] for sensible heat flux (H: MJ m-2 yr-1), [-3.2, -2.8] for net ecosystem exchange of C (NEE: tC ha-1 yr-1), [-11.8, -11.1] for gross primary productivity (GPP: tC ha-1 yr-1) and [8.6, 8.3] for ecosystem respiration (Re: tC ha-1 yr-1). The energy balance (Rn-H-LE) was nearly nil indicating that the EC system behaved reasonably. E was very close to P, indicating that little or no water would recharge the deep soil layers.Now comparing the dry (2/3 of the year) and wet (1/3) seasons: surprisingly, NEE was more effective during the dry season [-3.9, -1.7]. This was the result of Re being much lower on a daily basis as well as cumulated over the entire seasons [57, 84], whereas GPP was similar [-10.8, -12.1].We found a good match between E measured above the whole ecosystem (EC1), and the sum of tree transpiration (T, measured by sapflow) + E measured just above crops + soil (EC2) throughout the wet and dry seasons.The “Faidherbia-Flux” observatory is registered in FLUXNET as SN-Nkr and is widely open for collaboration.

Abstract

International audience; The adaptation of semi-arid crops to climate changes is theoretically possible through agroforestry, provided that the trees exert little competition, or even increase the multifunctional LER (LER_M). We monitored microclimate, net primary productivity (NPP), CO2 and H2O fluxes in a semiarid agro-sylvo-pastoral system (Niakhar, Senegal), dominated by the multipurpose Faidherbia albida (FA) tree. Undercrops were mainly millet and peanut, under annual rotation. We scanned a 1.24 ha millet under FA plot with UAV photogrammetry in RGB, thermal infrared and multispectral bands. At harvest, we collected 12 subplots of 15 millet holes each, distributed either below the crown of FA, or at 2.5 x crown radius, or at 5 x crown radius. We separated all organs. The whole millet root system (0-200 cm) was sampled also in 2 m trenches, totalizing 4 millet holes, where all roots were sorted by layer. The whole plot harvest will allow extrapolating yield from subplots, through UAV images. Millet yield per unit ground area was about 3 times higher below FA, with still a positive influence at 2.5 x crown radius and less impacts of pests close to FA. In the trenches, we noted higher soil humidity and SOC close to the FA trunks. This observatory is open for collaboration.

National audience; The Ubangui River in Bangui comes from The Mbomu River, the CAR side and the Uele River from the DRC. Its flow till Bangui in the bottom has 546 kilometers long and has numerous anastomoses, sprinkled with a good deal of islands and strangulations (Palambo and Bangui). Its side basin is influenced by the Sudano-Guinean variable of dumb tropical climate. This paper revisits the hydroclimatic changes of the Ubangui River at the outlet of Bangui in favor of a new hydropluviometric serial data from 1935 to 2015. The annual rainfall and hydrological data series were analyzed using different statistical tests (rainfall index and flow index, breaks research, depletion coefficients). Rainfall series still shows only one break in 1970, which confirms the exceptionality of this climate disruption in Central Africa. However hydrological series identifies four different hydrological periods: 1935-1959, 1960-1970, 1971-1982 and 1982-2013. The last period shows an average deficit of -22% (2 893 m(3)/s) compared to the mean annual flow over the entire study period (3 700 m(3)/s). The average relationship rain/runoff did not change during these well-identified hydroclimatic periods, suggesting that the hydrological functioning of the Ubangui River has not changed because of this climate disruption. It is attributed to the low human impact over this basin and to the small change of the vegetation cover. However the comparison of annual changes in the depletion coefficient with the volume mobilized by the aquifer flows to sustain the Ubangui River flows clearly indicates the relationship change before and after 1970 and after 2000.; Ce papier revisite l'évolution hydroclimatique de l'Oubangui à Bangui à la faveur d'une nouvelle série hydropluviométrique de 1935 à 2015. Pour cela, les données annuelles pluviométriques et hydrologiques de l'Oubangui à Bangui ont été analysées avec différents tests statistiques (indices pluviométrique et d'écoulement, recherches de ruptures, coefficients de tarissement). La série pluviométrique n'indique toujours qu'une seule cassure en 1970, ce qui confirme l'exceptionnalité de cette rupture climatique en Afrique Centrale. Par contre, la série hydrologique permet d'identifier quatre périodes hydrologiques différentes : 1935-1959, 1960-1970, 1971-1982 et 1982-2013. La dernière période montre un déficit moyen de -22 % (2 893 m3/s) par rapport au débit moyen annuel sur toute la période étudiée (3 700 m3/s.). Les relations moyennes pluie/débit n'ont pas évolué au cours de ces périodes hydroclimatiques, semblant indiquer que le fonctionnement hydrologique de l'Oubangui n'a pas changé du fait de la rupture climatique de 1970. Cela est attribué à la faible anthropisation de ce bassin et la faible évolution de son couvert végétal. Cependant la comparaison de l'évolution annelle du coefficient de tarissement avec le volume mobilisé par l'aquifère pour soutenir les écoulements de l'Oubangui indique clairement un changement de contribution de la nappe avant et après 1970, puis après 2000.
