Single-pixel imaging (SPI) is a novel optical imaging technique by replacing the pixelated sensor array in a conventional camera with a single-pixel detector. In previous works, SPI is usually used for capturing object images or performing image processing tasks. In this work, we propose a SPI scheme for processing other types of data in addition to images. An Ising machine model is implemented optically with SPI for solving combinational optimization problems including number partition and graph maximum cut. Simulated and experimental results show that our proposed scheme can optimize the Hamiltonian function with evolutionary illumination patterns.

The linearization of a microwave photonic link based on a dual-parallel Mach-Zehnder modulator is theoretically described and experimentally demonstrated. Up to four different radio frequency tones are considered in the study, which allow us to provide a complete mathematical description of all third-order distortion terms that arise at the photodetector. Simulations show that a complete linearization is obtained by properly tuning the DC bias voltages and processing the optical carrier and. As a result, a suppression of 17 dBm is experimentally obtained for the third-order distortion terms, as well as a SDFR improvement of 3 dB. The proposed linearization method enables the simultaneous modulation of four different signals without the need of additional radio frequency components, which is desirable to its implementation in integrated optics and makes it suitable for several applications in microwave photonics.

As properties of mono- to few layers of exfoliated van der Waals heterostructures are heavily dependent on their thicknesses, accurate thickness measurement becomes imperative in their study. Commonly used atomic force microscopy and Raman spectroscopy techniques may be invasive and produce inconclusive results. Alternatively, spectroscopic ellipsometry is limited by tens-of-microns lateral resolution and/or low data acquisition rates, inhibiting its utilization for micro-scale exfoliated flakes. In this work, we demonstrate a Fourier imaging spectroscopic micro-ellipsometer with sub-5 microns lateral resolution along with fast data acquisition rate and present angstrom-level accurate and consistent thickness mapping on mono-, bi- and trilayers of graphene, hexagonal boron nitride and transition metal dichalcogenide (MoS2, WS2, MoSe2, WSe2) flakes. We show that the optical microscope integrated ellipsometer can also map minute thickness variations over a micro-scale flake. In addition, our system addresses the pertinent issue of identifying monolayer thick hBN.

We present a comprehensive study of dispersion managed ultrashort-pulse generation in Nd-doped polarization maintaining all-fiber laser at a 920 nm wavelength. We implement a linear laser scheme with a chirped fiber Bragg grating (CFBG) serving as a semitransparent mirror and semiconductor saturable absorber mirror (SESAM) as a mode-locker and as a second non-transparent mirror. Complete 1064 nm emission filtering is ensured by 920/1064 wavelength division multiplexer. The dispersion compensation by CFBG was sufficient to reach anomalous net dispersion in the shortest laser scheme allowing us to investigate mode-locking regimes in the -0.05 ps 2 - 0.24 ps 2 net dispersion range by varying the length of the passive fiber. With this approach we demonstrate high order harmonic mode-locking at dispersion closer to zero and large energy span near-parabolic shape single pulse operation in anomalous dispersion regime. In this paper, we present refractive index measurement using a double-slot silicon waveguide-based Mach Zehnder interferometer. We present a double-slot waveguide that offers the best sensitivity and limit of detection compared to wire and single-slot waveguides. We demonstrate ultra-low loss coupling between a single-mode waveguide and a double-slot waveguide and experimental proof for double-slot excitation. The double-slot waveguide is used to demonstrate a highly sensitive concentration sensor. An unbalanced Mach-Zehnder is used as the sensor device to demonstrate concentrations of Potassium Chloride in deionized water. A sensitivity of 700 nm/RIU and a limit of detection (LOD) of 7.142e^-6 RIU are achieved experimentally. A new type of long-lived solitary structures for paraxial optics with two circular polarizations of light in a homogeneous defocusing Kerr medium with an anomalous group velocity dispersion has been revealed numerically in the coupled nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations. A found hybrid three-dimensional soliton is a vortex ring against the background of a plane wave in one of the components, and the core of the vortex is filled with another component nonuniformly in azimuth angle. The existence of such quasistationary structures with a reduced symmetry in a certain parametric region is due to the saturation of the so-called sausage instability caused by the effective surface tension of a domain wall between two polarizations., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, in English

A lossless beam-splitter has certain (complex-valued) probability amplitudes for sending an incoming photon into one of two possible directions. We use elementary laws of classical and quantum optics to obtain general relations among the magnitudes and phases of these probability amplitudes. Proceeding to examine a pair of (nearly) single-mode wavepackets in the number-states |n1> and |n2> that simultaneously arrive at the splitter's input ports, we find the distribution of photon-number states at the output ports using an argument inspired by Feynman's scattering analysis of indistinguishable Bose particles. The result thus obtained coincides with that of the standard quantum-optical treatment of beam-splitters via annihilation and creation operators a and a†. Holographic particle characterization uses quantitative analysis of holographic microscopy data to precisely and rapidly measure the diameter and refractive index of individual colloidal spheres in their native media. When this technique is applied to inhomogeneous or aspherical particles, the measured diameter and refractive index represent properties of an effective sphere enclosing each particle. Effective-sphere analysis has been applied successfully to populations of fractal aggregates, yielding an overall fractal dimension for the population as a whole. Here, we demonstrate that holographic characterization also can measure the fractal dimensions of an individual fractal cluster by probing how its effective diameter and refractive index change as it undergoes rotational diffusion. This procedure probes the structure of a cluster from multiple angles and thus constitutes a form of tomography. Halide perovskites belong to an important family of semiconducting materials with unique electronic properties that enable a myriad of applications, especially in photovoltaics and optoelectronics. Their optical properties, including photoluminescence quantum yield, are affected and notably enhanced at crystal imperfections where the symmetry is broken and the density of states increases. These lattice distortions can be introduced through structural phase transitions, allowing charge gradients to appear near the interfaces between phase structures. In this work, we demonstrate controlled multi-phase structuring in a single perovskite crystal. The concept uses cesium lead bromine (CsPbBr3) placed on a thermoplasmonic TiN/Si metasurface and enables single, double and triple phase structures to form on demand above the room temperature. This approach opens up application horizons of dynamically controlled heterostructures with distinctive electronic and enhanced optical properties.

An interferometer with effectively infinite maximum optical path difference removes the dominant resolution limitation for interferometric spectroscopy. Broken symmetries lie at the heart of nontrivial physical phenomena. Breaking the in-plane geometrical symmetry of optical systems allows to access a set of electromagnetic states termed symmetry-protected quasi-bound states in the continuum (qBICs). Here we demonstrate, theoretically, numerically and experimentally, that such optical states can also be accessed in metasurfaces by breaking the in-plane symmetry in the permittivity of the comprising materials, showing a remarkable equivalence to their geometrically-asymmetric counterparts. However, while the physical size of atoms imposes a limit on the lowest achievable geometrical asymmetry, weak permittivity modulations due to carrier doping and electro-optical Pockels and Kerr effects, usually considered insignificant, open up the possibility of infinitesimal permittivity asymmetries for on-demand, and dynamically tuneable optical resonances of extremely high quality factors. We probe the excitation of permittivity-asymmetric qBICs (${\varepsilon}$-qBICs) using a prototype Si/TiO$_{2}$ metasurface, in which the asymmetry in the unit cell is provided by the refractive index contrast of the dissimilar materials, surpassing any unwanted asymmetries from nanofabrication defects or angular deviations of light from normal incidence. ${\varepsilon}$-qBICs can also be excited in 1D gratings, where quality-factor enhancement and tailored interference phenomena via the interplay of geometrical and permittivity asymmetries are numerically demonstrated. In-plane optical anisotropy plays a critical role in manipulating light in a wide range of planner photonic devices. In this study, the strong anisotropy of multilayer 2D GeAs is leveraged and utilized to validate the technical feasibility of on-chip light management. A 2D GeAs is stamped into an ultra-compact silicon waveguide four-way crossing optimized for operation in the O-optical band. The measured optical transmission spectra indicated a remarkable discrepancy between the in-plane crystal optical axes with an attenuation ratio of ~ 3.5 (at 1330 nm). Additionally, the effect of GeAs crystal orientation on the electro-optic transmission performance is demonstrated on a straight waveguide. A notable 50 % reduction in responsivity was recorded for devices constructed with cross direction compared to devices with a crystal a-direction parallel to the light polarization. This extraordinary optical anisotropy, combined with a high refractive index ~ 4 of 2D GeAs, opens possibilities for efficient on-chip light manipulation in photonic devices.

We report on a direct generation of efficient and wavelength-tunable third-harmonic generation (THG) from ultrapure electronic-grade (EG) diamond crystals. Under an ultrafast infrared excitation at 1280 nm, the considerably high optical conversion efficiency of ~ 0.7% at a THG wavelength of 427 nm is obtained, and the THG signal can be tuned over ultra-broadband range from 420 to 730 nm. We argue that the THG efficiency is originating from minimum absorption loss and phase-matching conditions in EG diamond. Identifying chemical compounds is essential in several areas of science and engineering. Laser-based techniques are promising for autonomous compound detection because the optical response of materials encodes enough electronic and vibrational information for remote chemical identification. This has been exploited using the fingerprint region of infrared absorption spectra, which involves a dense set of absorption peaks that are unique to individual molecules, thus facilitating chemical identification. However, optical identification using visible light has not been realized. Using decades of experimental refractive index data in the scientific literature of pure organic compounds and polymers over a broad range of frequencies from the ultraviolet to the far-infrared, we develop a machine learning classifier that can accurately identify organic species based on a single-wavelength dispersive measurement in the visible spectral region, away from absorption resonances. We present a semianalytical scheme for the design of broad-angle multichannel metagratings (MG), sparse periodic arrangements of loaded conducting strips (meta-atoms), embedded in a multilayer printed circuit board configuration. By judicious choice of periodicity and angles of incidence, scattering off such a MG can be described via a multi-port network, where the input and output ports correspond to different illumination and reflection directions associated with the same set of propagating Floquet-Bloch modes. Since each of these possible scattering scenarios can be modelled analytically, constraints can be conveniently applied on the modal reflection coefficients (scattering matrix entries) to yield a diffusive response, which, when resolved, produce the required MG geometry. We show that by demanding a symmetric MG configuration, the number of independent S parameters can be dramatically reduced, enabling satisfaction of multiple such constraints using a single sparse MG. Without any full-wave optimization, this procedure results in a fabrication-ready layout of a multichannel MG, enabling retroreflection suppression and diffusive scattering from numerous angles of incidence simultaneously. This concept, verified experimentally via a five-channel prototype, offers an innovative solution to both monostatic and bistatic radar cross section reduction, avoiding design and implementation challenges associated with dense metasurfaces used for this purpose., 12 pages, 9 figures

Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Lasers (VCSELs) are highly promising devices for the construction of neuromorphic photonic information processing systems, due to their numerous desirable properties such as low power consumption, high modulation speed, compactness, and ease of manufacturing. Of particular interest is the ability of VCSELs to exhibit neural-like spiking responses, much like biological neurons, but at ultrafast sub-nanosecond rates; thus offering great prospects for high-speed light-enabled neuromorphic (spike-based) processors. Recent works have shown the use the spiking dynamics in VCSELs for pattern recognition and image processing problems such as image data encoding and edge-feature detection. Additionally, VCSELs have also been used recently as nonlinear elements in photonic reservoir computing (RC) implementations, yielding excellent state of the art operation. This work introduces and experimentally demonstrates for the first time the new concept of a Ghz-rate photonic spiking neural network (SNN) built with a single VCSEL neuron. The reported system effectively implements a photonic VCSEL-based spiking reservoir computer, and demonstrates its successful application to a complex nonlinear classification task. Importantly, the proposed system benefits from a highly hardware-friendly, inexpensive realization (built with a single VCSEL and off-the-shelf fibre-optic components), for high-speed (GHz-rate inputs) and low-power (sub-mW optical input power) photonic operation. These results open new pathways towards future neuromorphic photonic spike-based information processing systems based upon VCSELs (or other laser types) for novel ultrafast machine learning and AI hardware., 10 pages, 10 figures. The feasibility of a 220 - 330 GHz zero order axicon generated Bessel beam for corneal water content was explored. Simulation and experimental data from the 25-degree cone angle hyperbolic-axicon lens illuminating metallic spherical targets demonstrate a monotonically decreasing, band integrated, backscatter intensity for increasing radius of curvature from 7 - 11 mm, when lens reflector and optical axis are aligned. Further, for radii >= 9.5 mm, maximum signal was obtained with a 1 mm transverse displacement between lens and reflector optical axes arising from spatial correlation between main lobe and out of phase side lobes. Thickness and permittivity parameter estimation experiments were performed on an 8 mm radius of curvature, 1 mm thick fused quartz dome over a 10 mm axial span. Extracted thickness and permittivity varied by less than ~ 25 $μ$m and 0.2 respectively after correction for superluminal velocity. Estimated water permittivity and thickness of water backed gelatin phantoms showed significantly more variation due to a time varying radius of curvature., 11 pages; submitted to IEEE Transactions on Terahertz Science and Technology

Gallium is a plasmonic material offering ultraviolet to near-infrared tunability, facile and scalable preparation, and good stability of nanoparticles. In our contribution, we experimentally demonstrate the link between the shape and size of individual gallium nanoparticles and their optical properties. To this end, we utilize scanning transmission electron microscopy combined with electron energy loss spectroscopy. Lens-shaped gallium nanoparticles with a diameter between 10 nm and 200 nm were grown directly on a silicon nitride membrane using an in-house developed effusion cell operated at ultra-high vacuum conditions. We have experimentally proved that they support localized surface plasmon resonances and their dipole mode can be tuned through their size from ultraviolet to near-infrared spectral region. The measurements are supported by numerical simulations using realistic particle shapes and sizes. Our results open the way for future applications of gallium nanoparticles such as hyperspectral absorption of sunlight in energy harvesting or plasmon-enhanced luminescence of ultraviolet emitters.

Electron energy-loss spectroscopy (EELS) and cathodoluminescence (CL) are widely used experimental techniques for characterization of nanoparticles. The discrete dipole approximation (DDA) is a numerically exact method for simulating interaction of electromagnetic waves with particles of arbitrary shape and internal structure. In this work we extend the DDA to simulate EELS and CL for particles embedded into arbitrary (even absorbing) unbounded host medium. The latter includes the case of the dense medium, supporting the Cherenkov radiation of the electron, which has never been considered in EELS simulations before. We build a rigorous theoretical framework based on the volume-integral equation, final expressions from which are implemented in the open-source software package ADDA. This implementation agrees with both the Lorenz-Mie theory and the boundary-element method for spheres in vacuum and moderately dense host medium. And it successfully reproduces the published experiments for particles encapsulated in finite substrates. The latter is shown for both moderately dense and Cherenkov cases - a gold nanorod in $\text{SiO}_{\text{2}}$ and a silver sphere in $\text{SiN}_{\text{x}}$ respectively., Comment: 36 pages, 15 figures

Strongly driven systems of emitters offer an attractive source of light over broad spectral ranges up to the X-ray region. A key limitation of these systems is that the light they emit is for the most part classical. We challenge this paradigm by building a quantum-optical theory of strongly driven many-body systems, showing that the presence of correlations among the emitters creates emission of nonclassical many-photon states of light. We consider the example of high-harmonic generation (HHG), by which a strongly driven system emits photons at integer multiples of the drive frequency. In the conventional case of uncorrelated emitters, the harmonics are in an almost perfectly multi-mode coherent state lacking any correlation between harmonics. By contrast, a correlation of the emitters prior to the strong drive is converted onto nonclassical features of the output light, including doubly-peaked photon statistics, ring-shaped Wigner functions, and quantum correlations between harmonics. We propose schemes for implementing these concepts, creating the correlations between emitters via an interaction between them or their joint interaction with the background electromagnetic field (as in superradiance). By tuning the time at which these processes are interrupted by the strong drive, one can control the amount of correlations between the emitters, and correspondingly the deviation of the emitted light from a classical state. Our work paves the way towards the engineering of novel many-photon states of light over a broadband spectrum of frequencies, and suggests HHG as a diagnostic tool for characterizing correlations in many-body systems with attosecond temporal resolution., Comment: 26 pages main (5 figures), 23 pages Supplementary Information

The dependence of the semiconductor laser wavelength on the pump current is a well-known phenomenon, which is generally attributed to a change in the refractive index of the active layer due to carrier injection. This effect is usually considered to be a drawback as it causes frequency chirping of the pulses produced via direct current modulation. Here, we show that at high values of thermal resistance of a laser diode, the lasing wavelength is red-shifted due to the change of the refractive index caused by a thermal effect and this shift may significantly exceed (in absolute value) the blue shift related to a refractive index change induced by the carrier injection. We propose to benefit from the ability to tune wavelength by the pump current variation and use the same laser to generate qubits and synchronization optical pulses for quantum key distribution at different wavelengths. Spatial modulation of electron beams is an essential tool for various applications such as nanolithography and imaging1–3 , yet its implementations4–11 are severely limited and inherently non-tunable. Conversely, light-driven electron spatial modulation12–15 could potentially allow arbitrary electron wavefront shaping16–18 via the underlying mechanism of photon-induced nearfield electron microscopy (PINEM)19–21 . Here, we present tunable photon-induced spatial modulation of electrons through their externally-controlled interaction with surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Using recently developed methods of shaping SPP patterns 22,23, we demonstrate a dynamic control of the electron beam with a variety of high-quality electron distributions. Intriguingly, by utilizing the intrinsic interaction nonlinearity24, we attain the first observation of 2D spatial Rabi oscillations25,26 and generate electron features below the SPP wavelength. Our work paves the way to on-demand electron wavefront shaping at ultrafast timescales, with prospects for aberration correction, nano-fabrication and material characterization., The results supporting the findings of this articles have received additional fundings from the Israel Science Foundation grants 3334/19 and 831/19

As standard microelectronic technology approaches fundamental limitations in speed and power consumption, novel computing strategies are strongly needed. Analog optical computing enables processing large amounts of data at a negligible energy cost and high speeds. Based on these principles, ultrathin optical metasurfaces have been recently explored to process large images in real-time, in particular for edge detection. By incorporating feedback, it has also been recently shown that metamaterials can be tailored to solve complex mathematical problems in the analog domain, although these efforts have so far been limited to guided-wave systems and bulky setups. Here, we present an ultrathin Si metasurface-based platform for analog computing that is able to solve Fredholm integral equations of the second kind using free-space visible radiation. A Si-based metagrating was inverse-designed to implement the scattering matrix synthesizing a prescribed Kernel corresponding to the mathematical problem of interest. Next, a semi-transparent mirror was incorporated into the sample to provide adequate feedback and thus perform the required Neumann series, solving the corresponding equation in the analog domain at the speed of light. Visible wavelength operation enables a highly compact, ultrathin device that can be interrogated from free-space, implying high processing speeds and the possibility of on-chip integration.

Nonreciprocity originating from classical interactions among nonlinear scatterers has been attracting increasing attention in the quantum community, offering a promising tool to control excitation transfer for quantum information processing and quantum computing. In this work, we explore the possibility of realizing largely nonreciprocal total cross sections for a pair of quantum metasurfaces formed by two parallel periodic arrays of two-level atoms. We show that large nonreciprocal responses can be obtained in such nonlinear systems by controlling the position of the atoms and their transition frequencies, without requiring that the environment in which the atoms are placed is nonreciprocal. We demonstrate the connection of this effect with the asymmetric population of a slowly decaying dark state, which is critical to obtain large nonreciprocal responses.

Despite being extremely old concepts, plasmonics and surface plasmon resonance-based biosensors have been increasingly popular in the recent two decades due to the growing interest in nanooptics and are now of relevant significance in regards to applications associated with human health. Plasmonics integration into point-of-care devices for health surveillance has enabled significant levels of sensitivity and limit of detection to be achieved and has encouraged the expansion of the fields of study and market niches devoted to the creation of quick and incredibly sensitive label-free detection. The trend reflects in wearable plasmonic sensor development as well as point-of-care applications for widespread applications, demonstrating the potential impact of the new generation of plasmonic biosensors on human well-being through the concepts of personalized medicine and global health. In this context, the aim here is to discuss the potential, limitations, and opportunities for improvement that have arisen as a result of the integration of plasmonics into microsystems and lab-on-chip over the past five years. Recent applications of plasmonic biosensors in microsystems and sensor performance are analyzed. The final analysis focuses on the integration of microfluidics and lab-on-a-chip with quantum plasmonics technology prospecting it as a promising solution for chemical and biological sensing. Here it is underlined how the research in the field of quantum plasmonic sensing for biological applications has flourished over the past decade with the aim to overcome the limits given by quantum fluctuations and noise. The significant advances in nanophotonics, plasmonics and microsystems used to create increasingly effective biosensors would continue to benefit this field if harnessed properly.

Integration of devices generating nonclassical states~(such as entanglement) into photonic circuits is one of the major goals in achieving integrated quantum circuits~(IQCs). This is demonstrated successfully in recent decades. Controlling the nonclassicality generation in these micron-scale devices is also crucial for the robust operation of the IQCs. Here, we propose a micron-scale quantum entanglement device whose nonlinearity (so the generated nonclassicality) can be tuned by several orders of magnitude via an \textit{applied voltage} without altering the linear response. Quantum emitters~(QEs), whose level-spacing can be tuned by voltage, are embedded into the hotspot of a metal nanostructure~(MNS). QE-MNS coupling introduces a Fano resonance in the ``nonlinear response''. Nonlinearity, already enhanced extremely due to localization, can be controlled by the QEs' level-spacing. Nonlinearity can either be suppressed (also when the probe is on the device) or be further enhanced by several orders. Fano resonance takes place in a relatively narrow frequency window so that $\sim$meV voltage-tunability for QEs becomes sufficient for a \textit{continuous} turning on/off of the nonclassicality. The explosion of artificial intelligence and machine-learning algorithms, connected to the exponential growth of the exchanged data, is driving a search for novel application-specific hardware accelerators. Among the many, the photonics field appears to be in the perfect spotlight for this global data explosion, thanks to its almost infinite bandwidth capacity associated with limited energy consumption. In this review, we will overview the major advantages that photonics has over electronics for hardware accelerators, followed by a comparison between the major architectures implemented on Photonics Integrated Circuits (PIC) for both the linear and nonlinear parts of Neural Networks. By the end, we will highlight the main driving forces for the next generation of photonic accelerators, as well as the main limits that must be overcome.

Detection of enantiomers is a challenging problem in drug development as well as environmental and food quality monitoring where traditional optical detection methods suffer from low signals and sensitivity. Application of surface enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for enantiomeric discrimination is a powerful approach for the analysis of optically active small organic or large biomolecules. In this work, for enantio-selective sensing we proposed the coupling of disposable chiral plasmonic shurikens supporting the chiral near-field distribution with SERS active silver nanoclusters. As a result of the plasmonic coupling significant difference in SERS response of optically active analytes is observed. This is hypothesized and confirmed by numerical simulations to be a consequence of the silver particles being excited by superchiral fields generated at the surface or the probe molecules achieving additional polarization. The plasmon coupling phenomena was found to be extremely sensitive to slight variations in shuriken geometry, silver nanostructured layer parameters, and SERS excitation wavelength(s). Designed structures were able to discriminate cysteine enantiomers at concentrations in the nanomolar range and probe biomolecular chirality, using a common Raman spectrometer within several minutes. The combination of disposable plasmonic substrates with specific near-field polarization can make the SERS enantiomer discrimination a commonly available technique using standard Raman spectrometers.

Photonic integrated circuits are facilitating the development of optical neural networks, which have the potential to be both faster and more energy efficient than their electronic counterparts since optical signals are especially well-suited for implementing matrix multiplications. However, accurate programming of photonic chips for optical matrix multiplication remains a difficult challenge. Here, we describe both simple analytical models and data-driven models for offline training of optical matrix multipliers. We train and evaluate the models using experimental data obtained from a fabricated chip featuring a Mach-Zehnder interferometer mesh implementing 3-by-3 matrix multiplication. The neural network-based models outperform the simple physics-based models in terms of prediction error. Furthermore, the neural network models are also able to predict the spectral variations in the matrix weights for up to 100 frequency channels covering the C-band. Phase noise and frequency (in)stability both describe the fluctuation of stable periodic signals, from somewhat different standpoints. Frequency is unique compared to other domains of metrology, in that its fluctuations of interest span at least 14 orders of magnitude, from $10^{-4}$ in a mechanical watch to $10^{-18}$ in atomic clocks. The frequency span of interest is some 12-15 orders of magnitude, from $\mu$Hz to GHz Fourier frequency for phase noise, while the time span over which the fluctuations occur ranges from sub-$\mu$s to years integration time for variances. Because this domain is ubiquitous in science and technology, a common language and tools suitable to the variety mentioned are a challenge. This article is at once (1) a tutorial, (2) a review covering the most important facts about phase noise, frequency noise and two-sample (Allan and Allan-like) variances, and (3) a user guide to "Enrico's Chart of Phase Noise and Two-Sample Variances." Nonreciprocal elements, such as isolators and circulators, play an important role in classical and quantum information processing. Recently, strong nonreciprocal effects have been experimentally demonstrated in cavity optomechanical systems. In these approaches, the bandwidth of the nonreciprocal photon transmission is limited by the mechanical resonator linewidth, which is arguably much smaller than the linewidths of the cavity modes in most electromechanical or optomechanical devices. In this work, we demonstrate broadband nonreciprocal photon transmission in the \emph{reversed-dissipation} regime, where the mechanical mode with a large decay rate can be adiabatically eliminated while mediating anti-$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetric dissipative coupling with two kinds of phase factors. Adjusting the relative phases allows the observation of \emph{periodic} Riemann-sheet structures with distributed exceptional points (Eps). At the Eps, destructive quantum interference breaks both the $\mathcal{T}$- and $\mathcal{P}$-inversion symmetry, resulting in unidirectional and chiral photon transmissions. In the reversed-dissipation regime, the nonreciprocal bandwidth is no longer limited by the mechanical mode linewidth but is improved to the linewidth of the cavity resonance. Furthermore, we find that the direction of the unidirectional and chiral energy transfer could be reversed by changing the \emph{parity} of the Eps. Extending non-Hermitian couplings to a three-cavity model, the broken anti-$\mathcal{PT}$-symmetry allows us to observe high-order Eps, at which a parity-dependent chiral circulator is demonstrated. The driving-phase controlled periodical Riemann sheets allow observation of the parity-dependent unidirectional and chiral energy transfer and thus provide a useful cell for building up nonreciprocal array and realizing topological, e.g., isolators, circulators, or amplifiers., Comment: 11 pages, 9 figures

International audience; This paper introduces a novel boundary integral equation (BIE) method for the numerical solution of problems of planewave scattering by periodic line arrays of two-dimensional penetrable obstacles. Our approach is built upon a direct BIE formulation that leverages the simplicity of the free-space Green function but in turn entails evaluation of integrals over the unit-cell boundaries.Such integrals are here treated via the window Green function method. The windowing approximation together with a finite-rank operator correction—used to properly impose the Rayleigh radiation condition—yield a robust second-kind BIE that produces superalgebraically convergent solutions throughout the spectrum,including at the challenging Rayleigh–Wood anomalies. The corrected windowed BIE can be discretized by means of off-the-shelf Nyström and boundary element methods, and it leads to linear systems suitable for iterative linear algebra solvers as well as standard fast matrix–vector product algorithms. A variety of numerical examples demonstrate the accuracy and robustness of the proposed methodology.

Radiative thermal engineering with subwavelength metallic bodies is a key element for heat and energy management applications, communication and sensing. Here, we numerically and experimentally demonstrate metallic thermal emitters with narrowband but extremely stable emission spectra, whose resonant frequency does not shift with changes on the nanofilm thickness, the angle of observation and/or polarization. Our devices are based on epsilon-near-zero (ENZ) substrates acting as material-based high-impedance substrates. They do not require from complex nanofabrication processes, thus being compatible with large-area and low-cost applications. I. Confocal and multiphoton microscopy are effective techniques to obtain high-contrast images of 2-D sections within bulk tissue. However, scattering limits their application to depths only up to ~1 millimeter. Multimode fibers make excellent ultrathin endoscopes that can penetrate deep inside the tissue with minimal damage. Here, we present Multiview Scattering Scanning Imaging Confocal (MUSSIC) Microscopy that enables high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) imaging through a multimode fiber, hence combining the optical sectioning and resolution gain of confocal microscopy with the minimally invasive penetration capability of multimode fibers. The key advance presented here is the high SNR image reconstruction enabled by employing multiple coplanar virtual pinholes to capture multiple perspectives of the object, re-shifting them appropriately and combining them to obtain a high-contrast and high-resolution confocal image. We present an analytical scheme for designing metagrating-enhanced sparse antenna arrays. Unlike previous work, the proposed method does not involve time-consuming cost function optimizations, complex structural manipulations on the active array or demanding computational capabilities. Instead, it merely requires the integration of a passive metagrating (MG) superstrate, a planar periodic arrangement of subwavelength capacitively-loaded wires (meta-atoms), synthesized conveniently via a semianalytical procedure to guarantee suppression of grating lobes in the sparse configuration. Correspondingly, we extend previous formulations to enable excitation of the MG by the active array elements, deriving analytical relations connecting the passive and active element distribution and electrical properties with the scattered fields, eventually allowing resolution of the detailed device configuration leading to optimal directivity. Importantly, considering typical active array applications, the semianalytical synthesis scheme is further developed to take full advantage of the various degrees of freedom in the system, harnessing them to support scanning in a wide range of extreme angles while maintaining a single directive beam. The resultant methodology, verified in simulations to work well also for large finite arrays, offers an original path for mitigating grating lobes in sparse arrays with scanning capabilities, yielding a complete printed-circuit-board compatible design without relying on full-wave optimization., 9 pages, 7 figures

On-chip spatial and polarization multiplexing have emerged as a powerful strategy to boost the bandwidth of integrated optical transceivers. State-of-the-art multiplexers require accurate control of the relative phase or the spatial distribution among different guided optical modes, seriously compromising the bandwidth and performance of the devices. To overcome this limitation, we propose a new approach based on the coupling between guided modes in integrated waveguides and optical beams free-propagating on the chip plane. The engineering of the evanescent coupling between the guided modes and free-propagating beams allows spatial and polarization multiplexing with state-of-the-art performance. To demonstrate the potential and versatility of this approach, we have developed a two-polarization multiplexed link and a three-mode multiplexed link using standard 220-nm-thick silicon-on-insulator technology. The two-polarization link shows a measured -35 dB crosstalk bandwidth of 180 nm, while the three-mode link exhibits a -20 dB crosstalk bandwidth of 195 nm. These bandwidths cover the S, C, L, and U communication bands. We used these links to demonstrate error-free transmission (bit-error-rate < 10-9) of two and three non-return-to-zero signals at 40 Gbps each, with power penalties below 0.08 dB and 1.5 dB for the two-polarization and three-mode links respectively. The approach demonstrated here for two polarizations and three modes is also applicable to future implementation of more complex multiplexing schemes.

We give a necessary condition for photon state transformations in linear optical setups preserving the total number of photons. From an analysis of the algebra describing the quantum evolution, we find a conserved quantity that appears in all allowed optical transformations. We comment some examples and numerical applications, with example code, and give three general no-go results. These include (i) the impossibility of deterministic transformations which redistribute the photons from one to two different modes, (ii) a proof that it is impossible to generate a perfect Bell state in heralded schemes with a separable input for any number of ancillary photons and modes and a fixed herald and (iii) a restriction for the conversion between different types of entanglement (converting GHZ to W states)., 18 pages. Nonlinear frequency mixing is of critical importance in extending the wavelength range of optical sources. It is also indispensable for emerging applications such as quantum information and photonic signal processing. Conventional lithium niobate with periodic poling is the most widely used device for frequency mixing due to the strong second-order nonlinearity. The recent development of nanophotonic lithium niobate waveguides promises improvements of nonlinear efficiencies by orders of magnitude with sub-wavelength optical conferment. However, the intrinsic nanoscale inhomogeneity in nanophotonic lithium niobate limits the coherent interaction length, leading to low nonlinear efficiencies. Therefore, the performance of nanophotonic lithium niobate waveguides is still far behind conventional counterparts. Here, we overcome this limitation and demonstrate ultra-efficient second order nonlinearity in nanophotonic lithium niobate waveguides significantly outperforming conventional crystals. This is realized by developing the adapted poling approach to eliminate the impact of nanoscale inhomogeneity in nanophotonic lithium niobate waveguides. We realize overall secondharmonic efficiency near 10^4 %/W without cavity enhancement, which saturates the theoretical limit. Phase-matching bandwidths and temperature tunability are improved through dispersion engineering. The ideal square dependence of the nonlinear efficiency on the waveguide length is recovered. We also break the trade-off between the energy conversion ratio and pump power. A conversion ratio over 80% is achieved in the single-pass configuration with pump power as low as 20 mW.

The quest of a nonlinear optical material that can be easily nanostructured over a large surface area is still ongoing. Here, we demonstrate a nanoimprinted nonlinear barium titanate 2D nanohole array that shows optical properties of a 2D photonic crystal and metasurface, depending on the direction of the optical axis. The challenge of nanostructuring the inert metal-oxide is resolved by direct soft nanoimprint lithography with sol-gel derived barium titanate enabling critical dimensions of 120 nm with aspect ratios of 5. The nanohole array exhibits a photonic bandgap in the infrared range when probed along the slab axis while lattice resonant states are observed in out-of-plane transmission configuration. The enhanced light-matter interaction from the resonant structure enables to increase the second-harmonic generation in the near-UV by a factor of 18 illustrating the potential in the flexible fabrication technique for barium titanate photonic devices.

Vacuum birefringence produces a differential phase between orthogonally polarized components of a weak electromagnetic probe in the presence of a strong electromagnetic field. Despite representing a hallmark prediction of quantum electrodynamics, vacuum birefringence remains untested in pure light configurations due to the extremely large electromagnetic fields required for a detectable phase difference. Here, we exploit the programmable focal velocity and extended focal range of a flying focus laser pulse to substantially lower the laser power required for detection of vacuum birefringence. In the proposed scheme, a linearly polarized x-ray probe pulse counter-propagates with respect to a flying focus pulse, whose focus moves at the speed of light in the same direction as the x-ray probe. The peak intensity of the flying focus pulse overlaps the probe over millimeter-scale distances and induces a polarization ellipticity on the order of $10^{-10}$, which lies within the detection sensitivity of existing x-ray polarimeters., 13 pages, 5 figures

Scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscopy is a powerful imaging technique for studying materials beyond the diffraction limit. However, interpreting near-field measurements poses challenges in mapping the response of polaritonic structures to meaningful physical properties. To address this, we propose a theory based on the transfer matrix method to simulate the near-field response of 1D polaritonic structures. Our approach provides a computationally efficient and accurate analytical theory, relating the near-field response to well-defined physical properties. This work enhances the understanding of near-field images and complex polaritonic phenomena. Finally, this scattering theory can extend to other systems like atoms or nanoparticles near a waveguide.

We consider theoretically a network of directly coupled optical microcavities to implement a space-multiplexed optical neural network in an integrated nanophotonic circuit. Nonlinear photonic network integrations based on direct coupling ensures a highly dense integration, reducing the chip footprint by several orders of magnitude compared to other implementations. Different nonlinear effects inherent to such microcavities are studied when used for realizing an all-optical autonomous computing substrate, here based on the reservoir computing concept. We provide an in-depth analysis of the impact of basic microcavity parameters on computational metrics of the system, namely, the dimensionality and the consistency. Importantly, we find that differences between frequencies and bandwidths of supermodes formed by the direct coupling is the determining factor of the reservoir's dimensionality and its scalability. The network's dimensionality can be improved with frequency-shifting nonlinear effects such as the Kerr effect, while two-photon absorption has an opposite effect. Finally, we demonstrate in simulation that the proposed reservoir is capable of solving the Mackey-Glass prediction and the optical signal recovery tasks at GHz timescale.

Raman lasers is an actively developing field of nonlinear optics aiming to create efficient frequency converters and various optical sensors. Due to the growing importance of ultracompact chip-scale technologies, there is a constant demand for optical devices miniaturization, however, the development of a nanoscale Raman laser remains a challenging endeavor. In this work, we propose a fully subwavelength Raman laser operating in visible range based on a gallium phosphide nanocylinder resonator supporting a quasi bound state in the continuum (quasi-BIC). We perform precise spectral matching of nanoparticle's high-$Q$ modes with the pump and detuned Raman emission wavelengths. As a result of our simulations, we demonstrate a design of Raman nanolaser, ready for experimental realization, with the lasing threshold expected to be as low as $P_{\mathrm{th}} \approx 21~\mathrm{mW}$. The suggested configuration, to the best of our knowledge, represents the very first prototype of a low-threshold Raman nanolaser with all the dimensions smaller than the operational wavelength., 7 pages for main document including 4 figures, 2 pages for supplementary document including 1 figure

Cavity magnomechanics (CMM) is an emerging field and has received much attention in the past decade. It deals with coherent couplings among microwave cavity photons, magnons and vibration phonons. So far, all previous CMM experiments have been operated in the weak-coupling regime. This considerably limits prospective various applications of the system. Here, we demonstrate the CMM system in the strong-coupling regime and observe the associated normal-mode splitting. In this regime, the mechanical oscillator is strongly coupled to a cavity-magnon polariton that is formed by strongly coupled cavity photons and magnons, and the polariton-mechanics cooperativity reaches $4\times10^3$, which is improved by three orders of magnitude than previous CMM experiments. The system is then in the triple-strong-coupling regime and the normal modes of the system are the hybridization of microwave photons, magnons and phonons. This is achieved by significantly reducing the linewidth of the polariton mode using coherent perfect absorption and the linewidth is reduced by four orders of magnitude. The work paves the way towards full quantum control of phonons, photons and magnons, and provides a new platform for the study of rich strong-coupling effects in multipartite hybrid systems.

An integrated photonic circuit architecture to perform a modified-convolution operation based on the Discrete Fractional Fourier Transform (DFrFT) is introduced. This is accomplished by utilizing two nonuniformly-coupled waveguide lattices with equally-spaced eigenmode spectra and with different lengths that perform DFrDT operations of complementary orders sandwiching a modulator array. Numerical simulations show that smoothing and edge detection tasks are indeed performed even for noisy input signals.

Harnessing solar radiation pressure is key to transforming space exploration with multiple low cost sunlight propelled spacecraft to outer reaches of space. By controlling the direction of sunlight momentum transfer new missions and better maneuvering in space can be accessed. Here, we discuss design principles for taming in-plane radiation pressure under ambient sunlight. We propose and study theoretically ultra-wideband polarization insensitive metasurfaces for anomalous light reflection. Our design based on segmented tapered patch nanoantenna arrays allows reflection of >60% into one diffraction orders over a 400 nm band across larger part of the solar spectrum. Owing to a wideband nature and polarization insensitivity, our structures convert incident radiation into in-plane radiation pressure force with almost 30% efficiency. We discuss applications of our design to controlling solar sail spin. Beyond solar sailing, we envision that such anomalous metasurfaces for ambient sunlight will find use in solar concentration, spectrum splitting, and solar fuels., 16 pages, 5 figures

The use of nanophotonics for optical manipulation has continuously attracted interest in both fundamental research and practical applications, due to its significantly enhanced capabilities at the nanoscale. In this work, we showed that plasmonic particles can be trapped at off-axis location in Gaussian beams assisted by surface plasmon resonance. The off-axis displacement can be tuned at the sub-wavelength scale by the incident light beams. Based on these, we propose that a superfast orbital rotation of particles in continuous-wave laser beam can be realized in tightly focused circularly polarized Gaussian beams. The rotation has a tunable orbital radius at the sub-wavelength scale and a superfast rotation speed (more than 10^4 r/s in water under common laboratory conditions). Our work will aid in the development of optically driven nanomachines, and find applications in micro/nano-rheology, micro-fluid mechanics, and biological research at the nanoscale., 5 pages, 5 figures

The maximum amount of entanglement achievable under passive transformations by continuous-variable states is called the entanglement potential. Recent work has demonstrated that the entanglement potential is upper-bounded by a simple function of the squeezing of formation, and that certain classes of two-mode Gaussian states can indeed saturate this bound, though saturability in the general case remains an open problem. In this study, we introduce a larger class of states that we prove saturates the bound, and we conjecture that all two-mode Gaussian states can be passively transformed into this class, meaning that for all two-mode Gaussian states, entanglement potential is equivalent to squeezing of formation. We provide an explicit algorithm for the passive transformations and perform extensive numerical testing of our claim, which seeks to unite the resource theories of two characteristic quantum properties of continuous-variable systems., 10 pages, 2 figures

Trapped ions are one of the leading platforms for quantum information processing, exhibiting the highest gate and measurement fidelities of all contending hardware. In order to realize a universal quantum computer with trapped ions, independent and parallel control over the state of each qubit is necessary. The manipulation of individual qubit states in an ion chain via stimulated Raman transitions generally requires light focused on individual ions. In this manuscript, we present a novel, guided-light individual addressing system for hyperfine Ba$^+$ qubits. The system takes advantage of laser-written waveguide technology, enabled by the atomic structure of Ba$^+$, allowing the use of visible light to drive Raman transitions. Such waveguides define the spatial mode of light, suppressing aberrations that would have otherwise accumulated in a free-space optics set up. As a result, we demonstrate a nearest neighbour relative intensity crosstalk on the order of 10$^{-4}$, without any active aberration compensation. This is comparable to or better than other previous demonstrations of individual addressing. At the same time, our modular approach provides independent and agile control over the amplitude, frequency, and phase of each channel; combining the strengths of previous implementations.
