Earth-based gravitational waves interferometric detectors are shot-noise limited in the high-frequency region of their sensitivity band. While enhancing the laser input power is the natural solution to improve on the shot noise limit, higher power also increases the optical aberration budget due to the laser absorption in the highly reflective coatings of mirrors, resulting in a drop of the sensitivity of the detector. Advanced Virgo exploits Hartmann Wavefront Sensors (HWSs) to locally measure the absorption-induced optical aberrations by monitoring the optical path length change in the core optics. Despite the very high sensitivity of Hartmann sensors, temperature fluctuations can cause a spurious curvature term to appear in the reconstructed wavefront due to the thermal expansion of the Hartmann plate, that could affect the accuracy of the aberration monitoring. We present the implementation and validation of a control loop to stabilize the Advanced Virgo HWS temperature at the order of Δ T ⩽ 0.01 K, keeping the spurious curvature within the detector's requirements on wavefront sensing accuracy. AbstractPurposeMethodsResultsConclusionsThis study describes a prototype developed for aphakia without capsular support (AWCS) and its proof of concept.This descriptive study used a 3D software to create and analyze virtual prototypes before manufacturing. A nylon-6/nylon-6.6 copolymer filament and a 3D printer were used for prototyping. A device implantation technique was developed using a 23-gauge hypodermic needle. Two opposing markings, 2 mm posterior to the limbus, were made to determine the location of the scleral punctures and the final position of the device. After adequate centralization and positioning of the device, its haptics were cut and cauterized to generate thermal modeling of the extremity and allow the thickening of the tips (flange), serving as an anchoring mechanism to the sclera. The efficacy and adequacy of the technique and device were then evaluated.Vitreous tissue extrusion was not observed during the sclerotomy. The device was well fixed to the sclera; however, adequate IOL stability and centralization still needed to be achieved. The surgeon evaluated the adequacy of all the other devices’ characteristics.The development of a technology prototype for correcting AWCS was possible. Artificial 1D and 2D lattices have emerged as a powerful platform for the emulation of lattice Hamiltonians, the fundamental study of collective many‐body effects, and phenomena arising from non‐trivial topology. Exciton‐polaritons, bosonic part‐light and part‐matter quasiparticles, combine pronounced nonlinearities with the possibility of on‐chip implementation. In this context, organic semiconductors embedded in microcavities have proven to be versatile candidates to study nonlinear many‐body physics and bosonic condensation, and in contrast to most inorganic systems, they allow the use at ambient conditions since they host ultra‐stable Frenkel excitons. A well‐controlled, high‐quality optical lattice is implemented that accommodates light‐matter quasiparticles. The realized polariton graphene presents with excellent cavity quality factors, showing distinct signatures of Dirac cone and flatband dispersions as well as polariton lasing at room temperature. This is realized by filling coupled dielectric microcavities with the fluorescent protein mCherry. The emergence of a coherent polariton condensate at ambient conditions are demonstrated, taking advantage of coupling conditions as precise and controllable as in state‐of‐the‐art inorganic semiconductor‐based systems, without the limitations of e.g. lattice matching in epitaxial growth. This progress allows straightforward extension to more complex systems, such as the study of topological phenomena in 2D lattices including topological lasers and non‐Hermitian optics. In this work,60TeO 2 -(35-x)ZnO-xNb 2 O 5 –5SrF 2 -0.5Dy 2 O 3 glasses was prepared to use a high-temperature melting method, where x represents the Nb 2 O 5 content (x = 0,5,7.5,10).Raman spectra studies revealed that increasing the concentration ratio of Nb 2 O 5 to TeO 2 resulted in the gradual transformation of [TeO 3 ] and [TeO 3+1 ] units in the glass network to [TeO 4 ] units. This transformation also enhanced the stability of the network structure. The emission peaks of the samples were observed at 481 nm (blue), 576 nm (yellow), and 663 nm (red), which is crucial for white light materials. The luminescent intensity increased with the increase of Nb 2 O 5 concentration, reaching its maximum at 7.5% mol. The CIE 1931 chromaticity coordinates fell within the range of white light, with corresponding color temperatures ranging from 5063 K to 5877 K. All the results show that the fluorescent materials used in high-brightness illumination can be obtained by adding an appropriate amount of Nb 2 O 5 to Dy3+-doped tellurate glass. Dielectric mirrors comprising thin‐film multilayers are widely used in optical experiments because they can achieve substantially higher reflectance compared to metal mirrors. Here, potential problems are investigated that can arise when dielectric mirrors are used at oblique incidence, in particular for focused beams. It is found that light beams reflected from dielectric mirrors can experience lateral beam shifts, beam‐shape distortion, and depolarization, and these effects have a strong dependence on wavelength, incident angle, and incident polarization. Because vendors of dielectric mirrors typically do not share the particular layer structure of their products, several dielectric‐mirror stacks are designed and simulated, and then the lateral beam shift from two commercial dielectric mirrors and one coated metal mirror is also measured. This paper brings awareness of the tradeoffs between dielectric mirrors and front‐surface metal mirrors in certain optics experiments, and it is suggested that vendors of dielectric mirrors provide information about beam shifts, distortion, and depolarization when their products are used at oblique incidence. The new extended direct algebraic technique (EDAT) is used to investigate the rational, and soliton solution for time dependent dimension-less paraxial wave model. The wave solutions help in considerations of physical phenomena and have significant applications in engineering and physics. In optics and photonics, various optical patterns of waves can be beneficial for demonstrating the dynamics behavior of optical solutions that pertain to studying a several kind of mechanical techniques involving the flow of light via optical fibers like mirror, lenses and imaging. By applying suitable parameter values, the exact solutions are obtained with dark, bright, singular, bright-dark, periodic form by using Mathematica 11.0. The 3-D density, 2-D plot and contour plot are plotted and explored the self-focusing structure of electromagnetic waves in non-linear techniques to present a physical description of examined solutions using Matlab. Metalenses (MLs), representing a groundbreaking paradigm shift within the realm of optics, have ushered in a transformative era in the ability to manipulate and harness the power of light. Diverging from the conventional approach reliant on curved surfaces to bend light, MLs harness intricate arrays of minuscule nanostructures to exert precise control over the phase and amplitude of incident light waves. This revolutionary technology bestows a plethora of advantages, including the creation of ultra‐compact optical systems, the enhancement of focusing capabilities to unprecedented levels, and the capability to rectify optical aberrations in a significantly thinner and more lightweight form factor. MLs have discovered a multitude of applications spanning diverse fields, from imaging and photography to augmenting reality and refining medical devices. They stand as a beacon of hope for reshaping the landscape of optical systems, courtesy of their remarkable adaptability and exceptional performance. AbstractPurposeMethodsResultsConclusionsA cataract is a cloudy area in the crystalline lens. Cataracts are the leading cause of blindness and the second cause of severe vision impairment worldwide. During cataract surgery, the clouded lens is extracted and replaced with an artificial intraocular lens, which restores the optical power. The fabrication of intraocular lenses using existing molding and lathing techniques is a complex and time-consuming process that limits the development of novel materials and designs. To overcome these limitations, we have developed a stereolithography-based process for producing models of clear lens designs without refractive function, serving as a proof of concept. This process has the potential to contribute toward new lens development, allowing for unlimited design iterations and an expanded range of materials for scientists to explore.Lens-like 3D objects without refractive function were fabricated by using stereolithography. A photopolymerizable resin containing 2-phenoxyethyl acrylate, poly (ethylene glycol) dimethacrylate, and a suitable photoinitiator was developed for the production of lens-like 3D object prototypes. The morphology of the printed devices was characterized by scanning electron microscopy. The transparency and thermal properties were analyzed using spectrophotometry and differential scanning calorimetry, respectively. The biocompatibility of the devices was investigated in a cultured human lens cell line (FHL-124), using a standard lactate dehydrogenase assay, and the lenses were folded and implanted in the human capsular bag model.One-piece lens-like 3D objects without refractive function and with loop-haptic design were successfully fabricated using Stereolithography (SLA) technique. The resulting 3D objects were transparent, as determined by UV spectroscopy. The lactate dehydrogenase test demonstrated the tolerance of lens cells to the prototyping material, and apparent foldability and shape recovery was observed during direct injection into a human capsular bag model in vitro.This proof-of-principle study demonstrated the potential and significance of the rapid prototyping process for research and development of lens-like 3D object prototypes, such as intraocular lenses. High‐quality lens production has involved subtractive manufacturing methods for centuries. These methods demand specialist equipment and expertise that often render custom high‐grade glass optics inaccessible. A low‐cost, accessible, and reproducible method is developed to manufacture high‐quality three dimensional (3D) printed lenses using consumer‐grade technology. Various planoconvex lenses are produced using a consumer‐grade 3D printer and low‐cost spin coating setup, and printed lenses are compared to commercial glass counterparts. A range of mechanical and optical methods are introduced to determine the surface quality and curvature of 3D printed lenses. Amongst others, high‐resolution interference reflection microscopy methods are used to reconstruct the convex surface of printed lenses and quantify their radius of curvature. The optical throughput and performance of 3D printed lenses are assessed using optical transmissivity measurements and classical beam characterization methods. It is determined that 3D printed lenses have comparable curvature and performance to commercial glass lenses. Finally, the application of 3D printed lenses is demonstrated for brightfield transmission microscopy, resolving sub‐cellular structures over a 2.3 mm field‐of‐view. The high reproducibility and comparable performance of 3D printed lenses present great opportunities for additive manufacturing of bespoke optics for low‐cost rapid prototyping and improved accessibility to high‐quality optics in low‐resource settings. 2D dilute magnetic semiconductors have been recently reported in transition metal dichalcogenides doped with spin‐polarized transition metal atoms, for example vanadium‐doped WS2 monolayers, which exhibit room‐temperature ferromagnetic ordering. However, a broadband characterization of the electronic band structure of these doped WS2 monolayers and its dependence on vanadium concentration is still lacking. Therefore, power‐dependent photoluminescence, resonant four‐wave mixing, and differential reflectance spectroscopies are performed here to study optical transitions close to the A exciton energy of vanadium‐doped WS2 monolayers at three different doping levels. Instead of a single A exciton peak, vanadium‐doped samples exhibit two photoluminescence peaks associated with transitions from a donor‐like level and the conduction band minima. Moreover, resonant Raman and second‐harmonic generation experiments reveal a blueshift in the B exciton energy but no energy change in the C exciton after vanadium doping. Density functional theory calculations show that the band structure is sensitive to the Hubbard U correction for vanadium, and several scenarios are proposed to explain the two photoluminescence peaks around the A exciton energy region. This work provides the first broadband optical characterization of these 2D dilute magnetic semiconductors, shedding light on the novel and tunable electronic features of V‐doped WS2 monolayers. At-wavelength metrology of X-ray optics plays a crucial role in evaluating the performance of optics under actual beamline operating conditions, enabling in situ diagnostics and optimization. Techniques utilizing a wavefront random modulator have gained increasing attention in recent years. However, accurately mapping the measured wavefront slope to a curved X-ray mirror surface when the modulator is downstream of the mirror has posed a challenge. To address this problem, an iterative method has been developed in this study. The results demonstrate a significant improvement compared with conventional approaches and agree with offline measurements obtained from optical metrology. We believe that the proposed method enhances the accuracy of at-wavelength metrology techniques, and empowers them to play a greater role in beamline operation and optics fabrication. Knife-edge imaging is a successful method for determining the wavefront distortion of focusing optics such as Kirkpatrick-Baez mirrors or compound refractive lenses. In this study, the wavefront error of an imperfect elliptical mirror is predicted by developing a knife-edge program using the SHADOW/OASYS platform. It is shown that the focusing optics can be aligned perfectly by minimizing the parabolic and cubic coefficients of the wavefront error. The residual wavefront error provides precise information about the figure/height errors of the focusing optics suggesting it as an accurate method for in situ optical metrology. A Python program is developed to design a customized wavefront refractive corrector to minimize the residual wavefront error. Uniform beam at and out of focus and higher peak intensity are achieved by the wavefront correction in comparison with ideal focusing. The developed code provides a quick way for wavefront error analysis and corrector design for non-ideal optics especially for the new-generation diffraction-limited sources, and saves considerable experimental time and effort. Maximizing the performance of crystal monochromators is a key aspect in the design of beamline optics for diffraction-limited synchrotron sources. Temperature and deformation of cryo-cooled crystals, illuminated by high-power beams of X-rays, can be estimated with a purely analytical model. The analysis is based on the thermal properties of cryo-cooled silicon crystals and the cooling geometry. Deformation amplitudes can be obtained, quickly and reliably. In this article the concept of threshold power conditions is introduced and defined analytically. The contribution of parameters such as liquid-nitrogen cooling efficiency, thermal contact conductance and interface contact area of the crystal with the cooling base is evaluated. The optimal crystal illumination and the base temperature are inferred, which help minimize the optics deformation. In optics, real images can be projected onto a screen, while virtual ones always remain behind mirrors. This apparently straightforward distinction is based on complex premises which emerged in the Early Modern period, and its development went hand in hand with a transformation of the notion of image, which became detached from sensual perception. In this article I will outline this historical process, and argue that the distinction between a real and virtual image still implies a reference to visual perception which makes it problematic, yet useful for didactic purposes. The main aim of this article is to analyse the Si solar cell's behaviour when it is exposed to light of different colours. An experimental work, with 100 experimental tests, was carried out, using an RGB LED. In order to obtain better fitting of the characteristic curves' results, we used a novel discrete model, d1MxP. The obtained results showed that all experimental points of the tests were inside the two triangles that connected the three theoretical primary colours and the three experimental primary colours in the chromaticity diagram. With this diagram, the colour purity could be determined, which presented values between 20% and 60%. The primary colours of the three different LEDs of the light source presented a dominant wavelength that corresponded to the peak wavelengths of the light source spectrum, which showed high purity. However, the obtained results show that mixing colours may not lead to an increase in the cell's output power. Additionally, an increase in the cell's temperature was observed, due to the surplus absorbed energy, which was converted into heat, being one of the causes of the cell's efficiency reduction. Pancake lens has been widely used in virtual reality (VR) and mixed reality (MR) due to its compact form factor. However, using a half mirror (HM) to fold the optical path results in a tremendous optical loss. To enhance the optical efficiency while keeping a compact form factor, we present a new folded optical system incorporating a nonreciprocal polarization rotator. In our proof‐of‐concept experiment using a commercial Faraday rotator (FR), the theoretically predicted 100% efficiency is validated. Besides, the angular response of terbium gallium garnet (TGG) material is simulated for the first time and the results indicate that such an FR is relatively insensitive to the incident angle, which can dramatically enhance the contrast ratio of our pancake design. RFC1 disease, caused by biallelic repeat expansion in RFC1 , is clinically heterogeneous in terms of age of onset, disease progression and phenotype. We investigated the role of the repeat size in influencing clinical variables in RFC1 disease. We also assessed the presence and role of meiotic and somatic instability of the repeat. In this study, we identified 553 patients carrying biallelic RFC1 expansions and measured the repeat expansion size in 392 cases. Pearson's coefficient was calculated to assess the correlation between the repeat size and age at disease onset. A Cox model with robust cluster standard errors was adopted to describe the effect of repeat size on age at disease onset, on age at onset of each individual symptoms, and on disease progression. A quasi-Poisson regression model was used to analyse the relationship between phenotype and repeat size. We performed multivariate linear regression to assess the association of the repeat size with the degree of cerebellar atrophy. Meiotic stability was assessed by Southern blotting on first-degree relatives of 27 probands. Finally, somatic instability was investigated by optical genome mapping on cerebellar and frontal cortex and unaffected peripheral tissue from four post-mortem cases. A larger repeat size of both smaller and larger allele was associated with an earlier age at neurological onset [smaller allele hazard ratio (HR) = 2.06, P < 0.001; larger allele HR = 1.53, P < 0.001] and with a higher hazard of developing disabling symptoms, such as dysarthria or dysphagia (smaller allele HR = 3.40, P < 0.001; larger allele HR = 1.71, P = 0.002) or loss of independent walking (smaller allele HR = 2.78, P < 0.001; larger allele HR = 1.60; P < 0.001) earlier in disease course. Patients with more complex phenotypes carried larger expansions [smaller allele: complex neuropathy rate ratio (RR) = 1.30, P = 0.003; cerebellar ataxia, neuropathy and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) RR = 1.34, P < 0.001; larger allele: complex neuropathy RR = 1.33, P = 0.008; CANVAS RR = 1.31, P = 0.009]. Furthermore, larger repeat expansions in the smaller allele were associated with more pronounced cerebellar vermis atrophy (lobules I–V β = −1.06, P < 0.001; lobules VI–VII β = −0.34, P = 0.005). The repeat did not show significant instability during vertical transmission and across different tissues and brain regions. RFC1 repeat size, particularly of the smaller allele, is one of the determinants of variability in RFC1 disease and represents a key prognostic factor to predict disease onset, phenotype and severity. The art of light engineering unveils a world of possibilities through the meticulous manipulation of photonic properties such as intensity, phase, and polarization. Precision control over these properties finds application in a variety of fields spanning communications, light–matter interactions, laser direct writing, and imaging. Terahertz (THz) range, nestled between microwaves and infrared light, stands out for its remarkable ability to propagate with minimal losses in numerous dielectric materials and compounds, making THz imaging a powerful tool for noninvasive control and inspection. In this study, a rational framework for the design and optimal assembly of nonparaxial THz imaging systems is established. The research is centered on lensless photonic systems composed solely of high‐resistivity silicon‐based nonparaxial elements such as the Fresnel zone plate, the Fibonacci lens, the Bessel axicon, and the Airy zone plate, all fabricated using laser ablation technology. Through a comprehensive examination through illumination engineering and scattered light collection from raster‐scanned samples in a single‐pixel detector scheme, the imaging systems are evaluated via diverse metrics including contrast, resolution, depth of field, and focus. These findings chart an exciting course toward the development of compact and user‐friendly THz imaging systems where sensors and optical elements seamlessly integrate into a single chip. In the course of the Horizon 2020 project HighNESS, a second moderator concept has been developed for the European Spallation Source, which complements the currently built moderator and is optimized for high intensity with a large viewable surface area. In this work we introduce conceptual designs for neutron instruments for condensed matter research designed to make optimal use of the capabilities of this moderator. The focus is on two concepts for small-angle neutron scattering and one neutron imaging instrument, which are intended to complement corresponding instruments that are already under construction at the European Spallation Source. One small-angle neutron scattering instrument concept resembles a conventional pinhole collimator geometry and aims to profit from the proposed second moderator by enabling to illuminate larger samples and providing particularly high resolution, drawing on a 30 m collimation and corresponding detector distance. A second small-angle neutron scattering instrument concept adopts nested mirror optics that enable to efficiently exploit the large moderator size and provide high resolution by focusing on the detector. The neutron imaging instrument concept is a typical pinhole instrument that can be found at continuous sources and draws on the corresponding strengths of high flux and large homogeneous fields-of-view, while still providing moderate wavelength resolution for advanced imaging methods. The branch point singularities in the Riemann surface of the parameter space are known as the exceptional points (EPs), at which two or more eigenvalues and their associated eigenvectors simultaneously coalesce. The abrupt bifurcation property around an EP shows a strong spectral response to external perturbations, and hence, is exploited as a new approach to ultrasensitive sensors. Recently, an intriguing proposal for implementing second‐order EPs in optical resonators with external perturbations has shown the superiority of non‐Hermitian degeneracies in the enhancement of sensing. Of particular importance is further improving the sensitivity to even greater extents. To this end, a novel physical mechanism is proposed, namely introducing extra resonances of external Rayleigh scatterers to accomplish strong‐coupling augmentation in sensing. The results, grounded by both theoretical coupled‐mode‐theory calculations and experimental spectral‐domain measurements, show that the EP‐based sensor working at the coherent resonance equips simultaneously substantial perturbation strength and azimuth sensitivity even subjected to extremely weak perturbations. Applications in soft, flexible optical, and optoelectronic applications demand polymer thin film coatings that can accommodate substantial physical deformations. The preparation of high refractive index polymers (HRIPs) through the quaternization of poly(4‐vinylpyridine) (P4VP) thin films with (di)halomethanes is presented. P4VP thin films are prepared by initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) and then quaternized through exposure to saturated vapors of iodomethane (CH3I), dibromomethane (CH2Br2), and diiodomethane (CH2I2), resulting in refractive indices (RI) as high as 1.67, 1.71, and 2.07, respectively (at 632.8 nm). Fourier‐transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) confirmed the quaternization of pyridine pendant groups on the polymer chain to n‐methylpyridinium with primarily an iodide or bromide counterion, though a minor fraction of polyiodides are also detected. Additionally, these films demonstrate superior thermal stability, retaining their refractive index and thickness after thermal excursions to 200 °C. The halogenated P4VP films exhibit superior mechanical flexibility relative to conventional inorganic coatings (Al2O3 and Ta2O5) and do not fracture at uniaxial tensile strains as high as 10%. Optical superresolution microscopy is an important field, where nonlinear optical processes or prior information is used to defeat the classical diffraction limit of light. Quantum correlation microscopy uses photon arrival statistics from single photon emitters to aid in the determination of properties including the number of emitters and their relative brightness. Here we model quantum correlation microscopy in the few emitter regime, i.e. around four single photon emitters below the diffraction limit. We use the Akaike Information Criterion to determine the number of emitters and we vary the relative contributions of intensity to quantum correlation information to determine contribution that provides optimal imaging. Our results show diffraction unlimited performance and a change in localisation scaling behaviour dependent on emitter closeness. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: To objectively quantify glare of intraocular lenses (IOLs) using a diffractive principle to extend the visual range and to identify models with increased susceptibility to inducing glare. Setting: David J Apple Laboratory, Heidelberg, Germany. Design: Laboratory investigation. Methods: Glare was assessed by means of a straylight parameter with a standard C-Quant intended for 7 degrees. In addition, 2 C-Quant modifications were used to test lower angles (ie, 2.5 degrees and 3.5 degrees). The following IOLmodels were assessed: PanOptix, AT Lisa Tri, Synergy, and Triumf, the latter 2 with chromatic aberration correction at distance. Straylight from trifocal IOLs was compared against a monofocal W-60R lens. The C-Quant test was performed through the studied IOLs by using additional optical components attached to their ocular. Results: Straylight (deg2sr-1) of the control was <1 at all tested angles, with the trifocal models showing comparable straylight at 7 degrees. At 3.5 degrees, Triumf's straylight increased to 15.5 ± 0.6, followed by Synergy (6.2 ± 1.1), PanOptix (4.1 ± 0.3), and AT Lisa Tri (2.0 ± 0.8). The chromatic aberration-correctingmodels demonstrated correspondingly higher straylight (Synergy: 18.8 ± 1.3; Triumf: 17.3 ± 0.5) at 2.5 degrees compared with PanOptix (4.3 ± 0.4), AT Lisa Tri (2.1 ± 0.1), and monofocal IOLs yielding minimal or no increase. Conclusions: Trifocal IOLs induced increased straylight, but it was limited to lower angles, which may cause difficulties detecting these effects using a standard clinical approach. In this paper, the security of linear optics cloning machine-enhanced passive state preparation continuous-variable quantum key distribution is investigated. The employment of passive state preparation eliminates the strict requirements on electro-optical modulators, while an appropriately tuned linear optics cloning machine can compensate the preparation noise introduced in passive state preparation and improve the system performance. The expression of the composable secret key rate in the finite-size regime of the proposed scheme is obtained. Entanglement concentration protocol (ECP), as a practical technique, can be use to preclude degraded fidelity and improve security in long-haul quantum communication. We propose an efficient ECP for less-entangled unknown W states with simple linear-optics elements and effective single-photon detectors, resorting to time-delay degree of freedom. Moreover, in contrast to previous ECPs proposed for W states, the scheme has the advantages over requiring less quantum resource without auxiliary photons, comparatively simplified circuits, involving neither post-selection techniques nor photon-number-resolving detectors to distinguish the parity outcome, and being provided with a higher success probability by reusing the less-entangled states. We study microlocally the transmission problem at the interface between an isotropic linear elastic solid and a linear inviscid fluid. We set up a system of evolution equations describing the particle displacement and velocity in the solid, and pressure and velocity in the fluid, coupled by suitable transmission conditions at the interface. We show well-posedness for the coupled system and study the problem microlocally, constructing a parametrix for it using geometric optics. This construction describes the reflected and transmitted waves, including mode converted ones, related to incoming waves from either side. We also study formation of surface Scholte waves. In recent years, biomedical optics technology has developed rapidly. The current widespread use of biomedical optics was made possible by the invention of optical instruments. The advantages of being non-invasive, portable, effective, low cost, and less susceptible to system noise have led to the rapid development of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) technology for hemodynamics detection, especially in the field of functional brain imaging. At the same time, laboratories and companies have developed various fNIRS-based systems. The safety, stability, and efficacy of fNIRS systems are key performance indicators. However, there is still a lack of comprehensive and systematic evaluation methods for fNIRS instruments. This study uses the fNIRS system developed in our laboratory as the test object. The test method established in this study includes system validation and performance testing to comprehensively assess fNIRS systems' reliability. These methods feature low cost and high practicality. Based on this study, existing or newly developed systems can be comprehensively and easily evaluated in the laboratory or workspace. Free-space optical (FSO) communication can be subject to various types of distortion and loss as the signal propagates through non-uniform media. In experiment and simulation, we demonstrate that the state of polarization and degree of polarization of light passed though underwater bubbles, causing turbulence, is preserved. Our experimental setup serves as an efficient, low cost alternative approach to long distance atmospheric or underwater testing. We compare our experimental results with those of simulations, in which we model underwater bubbles, and separately, atmospheric turbulence. Fluorescence microscopy possesses the advantages of high resolution, high sensitivity, molecular specificity and noninvasiveness, providing an important tool in life science research. The multifocal array and 3D structured light are two kinds of important light fields that are often used in scanning fluorescence microscopy systems and wide-field fluorescence microscopy systems. However, traditional methods for generating multifocal arrays and 3D structured light illumination rely on various bulk optical components, making it challenging to achieve compact optical systems. Besides, generating these two types of illumination typically requires two separate and independent optical systems, hindering the integration of different types of fluorescence microscopy systems. Here, a dielectric metasurface is proposed that can achieve the switching between multifocal arrays and 3D structured light through polarization state modulation, greatly simplifying the illumination optics of fluorescence microscopy systems and facilitating the integration of different types of fluorescence microscopy systems. Statement of Problem: Limited evidence is available for the effect of chairside adjustment using rotary cutting instruments on the surface roughness and optical properties of different zirconia types. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of simulated adjustments on surface roughness and optical properties of different zirconia types. Materials and Methods: Three Partially Stabilized Zirconia (PSZ) types based on mole percent yttria (Y) concentration from the same manufacturer (Katana; Kuraray) were used: 3Y‐PSZ, 4Y‐PSZ, and 5Y‐PSZ. Thirty disk‐shaped specimens (Ø14 × 1.2 mm) from different zirconia types (N = 90) were prepared. Specimens were either left without adjustment (NA), adjusted with Dialite ZR finishing and polishing system (Brasseler) (APol), or adjusted with course diamond instruments only (ADia). The specimens were distributed into 9 groups (n = 10): Group 3Y‐PSZ/NA, Group 3Y‐PSZ/APol, Group 3Y‐PSZ/ADia, Group 4Y‐PSZ/NA, Group 4Y‐PSZ/APol, Group 4Y‐PSZ/ADia, Group 5Y‐PSZ/NA, Group 5Y‐PSZ/APol, and Group 5Y‐PSZ/ADia. The surface roughness of specimen was analyzed using an Atomic Force Microscope (AFM) (Bruker's Dimension Icon, Bruker) and Root Means Square (RMS) were recorded (nm). Surface Gloss (SG), Translucency Parameter (TP), and Contrast Ratio (CR) values of all groups were recorded using an integrating sphere spectrophotometer. Statistical analysis was performed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) and Tukey's multiple comparison tests for pairwise comparisons at p < 0.05 and 95% confidence interval. Results: APol had no effect on the surface roughness (p = 0.88) while ADia had a significant negative effect (p < 0.05) despite the type of zirconia. Out of the three testes optical properties, only SG was negatively affected by ADia for all types of zirconia (p < 0.05). The two adjustment types did not affect the TP of all the tested zirconia (p = 0.91). The CR was not affected by the tested adjustments for all zirconia types (p = 0.726). Conclusion: Proper zirconia adjustment following a sequence of burs and polishers can maintain acceptable roughness and optical properties. Adjustment of zirconia with rough diamond can lead to deleterious effects and should be avoided. Clinical Significance: Chairside adjustment of zirconia could lead to rougher surface and unpredictable changes of surface gloss. Purpose: The fit and optical performance of a scleral lens is affected by the alignment of the landing zone with the underlying ocular surface. The aim of this research was to quantify the effect of landing zone toricity upon scleral lens fitting characteristics (rotation and decentration) and optics (lens flexure) during short‐term wear. Methods: Scleral lenses with nominal landing zone toricities of 0, 100, 150 and 200 μm were worn in a randomised order by 10 young healthy participants (mean [SD] 24 [7] years) for 30 min, with other lens parameters held constant. Scleral toricity was quantified using a corneo‐scleral profilometer, and lens flexure, rotation, and decentration were quantified using over‐topography during lens wear. Repeated measures analyses were conducted as a function of landing zone toricity and residual scleral toricity (the difference between scleral and lens toricity) for eyes with 'low' magnitude scleral toricity (mean: 96 μm) and 'high' magnitude scleral toricity (mean: 319 μm). Results: Toric landing zones significantly reduced lens flexure (by 0.37 [0.21] D, p < 0.05) and lens rotation (by 20 [24]°, p < 0.05) compared with a spherical landing zone. Horizontal and vertical lens decentration did not vary significantly with landing zone toricity. These trends for flexure, rotation, and decentration were also observed for eyes with 'low' and 'high' magnitude scleral toricity as a function of residual scleral toricity. Conclusion: Landing zones with 100–200 μm toricity significantly reduced lens flexure (by ~62%) and rotation (by ~77%) but not horizontal or vertical lens decentration, compared with a spherical landing zone, when controlling for other confounding variables. The incorporation of a toric landing zone, even for eyes with lower magnitude scleral toricity (~100 μm), may be beneficial, particularly for front surface optical designs. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Lens phenomena, such as caustics, image distortions, and the formation of multiple images, are commonly observed in various refracting geometries, including raindrops, drinking glasses, and transparent vases. In this study, we investigate the ball lens as a representative example to showcase the capabilities of Berry's eye caustic as an optical tool. Unlike the conventional paraxial approximation, the eye caustic enables a comprehensive understanding of image transformations throughout the entire optical space. Through experimental exploration, we establish the relationship between the eye caustic and traditional light caustics. Furthermore, we provide mathematical expressions to describe both the caustic and the image transformations that occur when viewing objects through the ball lens. This approach could be of interest for optics education, as it addresses two fundamental challenges in image formation: overcoming the limitations of the paraxial approximation and recognizing the essential role of the observer in comprehending lens phenomena. In this work, an analytical model to study graphene-based spatiotemporal modulated structures is developed and verified through comparison with full wave numerical simulations. Graphene is an ideal material for realizing spatiotemporal modulated structures at high frequencies of THz and optics. In this analysis, the electromagnetic response of studied structures is expressed in terms of weighted Floquet-Bloch modes supported by the structure, while graphene is modeled by a spatiotemporal modulated surface current that imposes certain boundary conditions on the modes. The developed analytical technique is a comprehensive tool and can be used for accurate modeling of different kinds of spatiotemporal devices including lossy, guided, and leaky wave structures. To demonstrate the accuracy of the model, two plasmonic waveguides with space and time modulated graphene conductivity are analyzed and their interband and intraband transition between modes are thoroughly investigated. Using the developed analytical model, spatiotemporal modulation phenomena such as mode conversion, wave amplification and nonreciprocal response are explored and discussed for the studied structures. The direct interactions of atmospheric aerosols with radiation significantly impact the Earth's climate and weather and are important to represent accurately in simulations of the atmosphere. This work introduces two new contributions to enable more accurate representation of aerosol optics in atmosphere models: 1) 'TAMie,' a new Python-based Mie scattering code that can represent both homogeneous and coated particles and achieves comparable speed and accuracy to established Fortran Mie codes. 2) 'NeuralMie,' a neural network Mie code emulator trained on data from TAMie, that can directly compute the bulk optical properties of a diverse range of aerosol populations and is appropriate for use in atmosphere simulations where aerosol optical properties are parameterized. NeuralMie is highly flexible and can be used for a large range of particle types and wavelengths. It can represent core-shell scattering, and by directly estimating bulk optical properties, is more efficient than existing Mie code and Mie code emulators while incurring negligible error (0.08 % mean absolute percentage error). The in vivo diagnosis and monitoring of pulmonary disorders (caused for example by emphysema, Covid-19, immature lung tissue in infants) could be effectively supported by the non-invasive sensing of the lung through light. With this purpose, we investigated the feasibility of probing the lung by means of time-resolved diffuse optics, leveraging the increased depth (a few centimeters) attained by photons collected after prolonged propagation time (a few nanoseconds). We present an initial study that includes measurements performed on 5 healthy volunteers during a breathing protocol, using a time-resolved broadband diffuse optical spectroscopy system. Those measurements were carried out across the spectral range of 600–1100 nm at a source-detector distance of 3 cm, and at 820 nm over a longer distance (7–9 cm). The preliminary analysis of the in vivo data with a simplified homogeneous model revealed a maximum probing depth of 2.6–3.9 cm, suitable for reaching the lung. Furthermore, we observed variations in signal associated with respiration, particularly evident at long photon propagation times. However, challenges stemming from both intra- and inter-subject variability, along with inconsistencies potentially arising from conflicting scattering and absorption effects on the collected signal, hindered a clear interpretation. Diverse aspects of real-world problems are portrayed through nonlinear Schrodinger equations. This exploration considers a pair of fractional order Schrodinger equations describing important nonlinear instability phenomena which are related to heat pulse, quantum condensates, nonlinear acoustics, hydrodynamics, and nonlinear optics. The improved auxiliary equation and improved tanh schemes are imposed on the governing model which generate a bulk of innovative accurate wave solutions. Plenty of wave solutions achieved in this study could be utilized to characterize the interior mechanisms of intricate phenomena relating to the considered nonlinear models. Some of the solutions are selected to figure out in the sense of contours, 3D and 2D outlines after assigning suitable values to the involved free parameters. The directed techniques are employed to explore appropriate wave solutions of the above-stated nonlinear model for the first time ensuring the unique solutions rather than the results in earlier studies. The current research aims to create of novel nanostructured films from silicon sarbide(SiC)/cerium oxide (CeO2) doped polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as a promising nanocomposites materials to utilize in numerous quantum electronics and optical nanodevices. The fabricated nanostructures have great properties compared of other nanomaterials comprised few cost, excellent optical characteristics, flexible and lightweight. The structure, optical, and electronic features of PVA/SiC/CeO2 nanostructures were investigated. The structure properties included optimization, FTIR and optical microscope (OM). The optical characteristics were tested at wavelength ranged (200–800) nm. The optical characteristics results indicated that the absorbance of PVA rises about 76.9% at (λ = 240 nm, UV-spectra) while rises of 87% at (λ = 540 nm, VIS-spectra) when the SiC/CeO2 NPs content reached of (5.7 wt%).%. The energy gap decreased when the SiC/CeO2NPs content reached of 5.7wt% where it reduced from 4.5 to 2.7 eV, this performance make them appropriate for may optoelectronics nanodevices like transistors, photovoltaic cell, electronic gates, lasers, diodes and other applications. The optical parameters of PVA; with an increase in the SiC/CeO2 NPs content, the optical conductivity(σop), real (ε1) and imaginary (ε2) dielectric constants, absorption coefficient (α), refractive index (n), extinction coefficient (k), and other properties improved. Focusing on the problem of unclear ray-traced spots and their distribution rules in the design process of the Herriott cell, first, the characteristics of long-optical-path gas absorption cells were analyzed, and the calculation method of basic cavity length and the effective optical path of Herriott gas absorber cells were studied. Second, according to the transmission characteristics of geometric optics, a physical model of light transmission in Herriott cells was established via the LightTools software. Finally, simulation analysis was performed on Herriott cells with 5- and 14.4-m optical paths separately, determining the quantitative relationship between d/f and the number of spots reflected on the concave mirror, and optimizing the effective optical path and output laser energy of the Herriott cells. Through research analysis, the sizes and distribution positions of concave mirror spots in the Herriott cells were identified, as well as the factors affecting the number of reflections. It was also found that the number of reflected spots gradually decreases as d/f increases, revealing the light-tracing results and its spot distribution rule on the mirror surface, as well as verifying the accuracy of the theory. Expressions are obtained for the position of the maximum Imax of the Fourier transform of a Bessel–Gaussian beam (BGB) and its dependence on the topological charge is substantiated. It is found that Imax depends on the angle of the cone and the parameters of the Gaussian beam. Here, as the cone angle is reduced (and, therefore, the diffraction-free region increases), the distances between the maxima of the intensity distributions in the focal plane of the lens, corresponding to different magnitudes of the topological charge, increase. An expression is found for the position of the energy center of the Fourier transform of the BGB and it is shown that it also depends on the cone angle γ and the size of the Gaussian beam waist w0. As the product γw0 increases, the shift in the energy center of the BGB relative to the radius R of the annular Fourier spectrum in the approximation of geometric optics decreases. These results reveal the impossibility of forming perfect vortices with a BGB. Here the degree of their "imperfection" is determined by the deviation of the maximum of the intensity distribution in the focal plane of the lens on the parameter R which specifies the radius of the ring of the Fourier image of the Bessel beam, which is greater for beams with a larger diffraction-free region. A high-flux sub-micrometre focusing system was constructed using multilayer focusing mirrors in Kirkpatrick–Baez geometry for 100 keV X-rays. The focusing mirror system had a wide bandwidth of 5% and a high peak reflectivity of 74%. Performance was evaluated at the undulator beamline BL05XU of SPring-8, which produced an intense 100 keV X-ray beam with a bandwidth of 1%. When the light source was focused directly in both vertical and horizontal directions, the beam size was measured to be 0.32 mm (V) × 5.3 mm (H) with a flux of 1 × 1012 photons s-1. However, when a limited horizontal slit was used to form a secondary source, the focusing beam size decreased to 0.25 mm (V) × 0.26 mm (H) with a flux of 6 × 1010 photons s-1. The 200 nm line and space patterns of a Siemens star chart made of tantalum were clearly resolved by the absorption contrast of the focused beam. Propagation of light through a random scattering media is a challenging, yet a highly practical problem in numerous fields, such as in astronomy, medical diagnosis, non-line-of-sight imaging, imaging through fog, etc. Scattering media distort the light and generate a random pattern without any directly useful information. Nevertheless, the randomness of the light plays a significant role in designing and developing correlation-based imaging and measurement techniques. Correlation optics exploits the intrinsic fundamental features of randomness to unveil hidden information within the scattered light. This mini-review highlights the role of polarization correlation and pilot-assisted beam guiding through scattering medium in information recovery through random scattering media. Here, one of the orthogonal polarization components of the light is loaded with the information and the other is without the information, and this special scheme of the colinear beam propagation through the random scattering medium is referred to as the pilot-assisted beam guiding. Such a pilot-assisted propagation strategy helps to counter the randomness and preserves the desired information through the scattering channel. In this article, we mainly focus on the recent progress and advancement in polarization correlation with pilot-assisted beam guiding in looking through random scattering media. Purpose: Limitations of existing diffractive multifocal designs for presbyopia correction include discrete foci and photic phenomena such as halos and glare. This study aimed to explore a methodology for developing refractive extended depth‐of‐focus (EDoF) lenses based on a periodic power profile. Methods: The proposed design technique employed an optical power profile that periodically alternated between far, intermediate and near distances across the pupil radius. To evaluate the lens designs, optical bench testing was conducted. The impact on visual performance was assessed using a spatial light modulator‐based adaptive optics vision simulator in human subjects. Additionally, the effects of pupil size change and lens decentration on retinal image quality were examined. A comparative performance analysis was carried out against a typical diffractive trifocal design and a monofocal lens. Results: The proposed design method was found to be effective in uniformly distributing light energy across all object distances within the desired depth of focus (DoF). While trade‐offs between overall image quality and DoF still exist, the EDoF lens design, when tested in human subjects, provided a continuous DoF spanning over 2.25 D. The results also revealed that the EDoF design had a slightly higher dependence on changes in pupil size and lens decentration than the diffractive trifocal design. Conclusion: The proposed design method showed significant potential as an approach for developing refractive EDoF ophthalmic lenses. The development of infrared (IR) plastic optics for infrared thermal imaging, particularly, in the long‐wave IR (LWIR) spectrum (7–14 µm) is an area of growing technological interest due to the potential advantages associated with plastic optics (e.g., moldability and low cost). The development of a new class of optical polymers, chalcogenide‐based inorganic/organic hybrid polymers (CHIPs) derived from the inverse vulcanization of elemental sulfur, has enabled significant improvements in IR transparency due to reduction of IR absorbing organic comonomer units. The vast majority of effort has focused on new chalcogenide hybrid polymer synthesis and optical property improvements (e.g., refractive index, Abbe number, and LWIR transmission); however, fabrication and IR imaging methodology to prepare optical components has not been demonstrated, which remains critical to develop viable IR plastic optics. A new methodology is reported to fabricate optical components and evaluate LWIR imaging performance of this emerging class of optical polymers. New diffractive flat optics with a Fresnel lens design for these materials have been developed, along with a basic LWIR imaging system to evaluate CHIPs for LWIR imaging. This system‐based approach enables correspondence of copolymer structure‐property correlations with LWIR imaging performance, along with demonstration of room temperature LWIR imaging. Cold-water immersion (CWI) has been reported to reduce tissue metabolism postimmersion, but physiological data are lacking regarding the muscle metabolic response to its application. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a noninvasive optical technique that can inform muscle hemodynamics and tissue metabolism. To investigate the effects of CWI at 2 water temperatures (10°C and 15°C) on NIRS-calculated measurements of muscle oxygen consumption (mVO2). Crossover study. University sports rehabilitation center. A total of 11 male National Collegiate Athletic Association Division II long-distance runners (age = 23.4 ± 3.4 years, height = 1.8 ± 0.1 m, mass = 68.8 ± 10.7 kg, mean adipose tissue thickness = 6.7 ± 2.7 mm). Cold-water immersion at 10°C and 15°C for 20 minutes. We calculated mVO2 preimmersion and postimmersion at water temperatures of 10°C and 15°C. Changes in tissue oxyhemoglobin (O2Hb), deoxyhemoglobin (HHb), total hemoglobin (tHb), hemoglobin difference (Hbdiff), and tissue saturation index (TSI %) were measured during the 20-minute immersion at both temperatures. We observed a decrease in mVO2 after immersion at both 10°C and 15°C (F1,9 = 27.7801, P =.001). During the 20-minute immersion at both temperatures, we noted a main effect of time for O2Hb (F3,27 = 14.227, P =.001), HHb (F3,27 = 5.749, P =.009), tHb (F3,27 = 24.786, P =.001), and Hbdiff (F3,27 = 3.894, P =.020), in which values decreased over the course of immersion. Post hoc pairwise comparisons showed that these changes occurred within the final 5 minutes of immersion for tHb and O2Hb. A 20-minute CWI at 10°C and 15°C led to a reduction in mVO2. This was greater after immersion at 10°C. The reduction in mVO2 suggests a decrease in muscle metabolic activity (ie, O2 use after CWI). Calculating mVO2 via the NIRS-occlusion technique may offer further insight into muscle metabolic responses beyond what is attainable from observing the NIRS primary signals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

An overview of publications dedicated to the application of various X-ray fluorescence techniques for investigating the chemical composition of ancient ceramics and clays is presented. Examples of conventional wavelength dispersive and energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometers, portable X-ray analyzers, spectrometers with polycapillary optics (micro X-ray fluorescence spectrometry), and total reflection geometry are considered. Although X-ray fluorescence serves as the analytical signal in all cases, the listed X‑ray fluorescence techniques differ in the range of analytes, methods of sample preparation, and methods for calculating element concentrations. The author experience in applying the described techniques of X-ray fluorescence spectrometry to a comprehensive study of archaeological materials from the Stone Age for the historical reconstruction of economic activities in the Baikal Siberia population is also discussed.
