Because copper phthalocyanine (CuPc) has significant uses in industrial devices and pigments, it is a subject of great interest in basic scientific research. Studying and adjusting its photoelectric qualities, in particular, has drawn much attention. In this work, in situ high-pressure experiments were used to investigate in detail the vibrational and optical properties of ground-state β-CuPc up to 13 GPa. Both micro-Raman and ultraviolet and visible light (UV–vis) absorption measurements revealed a phase transition occurring around 3 GPa. Notably, the macrocycle breathing vibration was found to have a remarkable characteristic of first weakening and then strengthening in response to this pressure-induced phase transition. The UV–vis absorption data revealed that the bandgaps corresponding to the two absorption edges decrease gradually with increasing pressure, with one edge disappearing entirely above 11 GPa. Furthermore, the blue β-CuPc can be adjusted to dark green at 10 GPa and ultimately entirely black due to the merging of its absorption bands and redshifts at high pressure. Nonpolar (100), polar (002), semipolar (101), and nonpolar (110) preferred oriented ZnO films were synthesized by regulated growth using the chemical bath deposition method. The crystallinity, surface morphology, and optical properties of ZnO films with different preferred orientations after annealing in different atmospheres were systematically investigated. The experimental results show an increase in crystallinity and a decrease in surface roughness of the films after annealing; in particular, the optical transmittance of semipolar (101) preferred oriented ZnO films was significantly higher than that of the other samples. XPS and PL spectra confirmed that annealing in argon effectively increased donor defects, whereas annealing in oxygen and ozone reduced donor defects in the films, and that ozone annealing was best suited to enhance acceptor defects in nonpolar (110) preferred oriented ZnO films. Argon annealing is the best for the enhancement of donor defects in polar (002) preferred oriented ZnO films. This work achieves modulation of optical properties and defects of ZnO films by annealing in different atmospheres, which provides new ideas for the application of ZnO materials. The emergence of many efficient optical field modulation methods and planar optical devices is attributed to the continuous research of geometric phase. Nevertheless, conjugate symmetry of the geometric phase limits the multiplexing of metasurfaces. To overcome this limitation, integrating the propagation phase and the geometric phase to achieve self-decouped metasurfaces can effectively double channel capacity. Herein, a more in-depth derivation of Jones matrices is conducted, leveraging two degrees of freedom offered by the propagation phase and the geometric phase. This approach enables complete modulation in circular polarization channels. By designing the phase difference between a fast axis and a slow axis, energy allocation between different channels can be controlled. It means independent complex amplitude modulation is achieved. On this basis, the geometric phase is introduced to realize tri-channel multiplexing metasurfaces. To verify the feasibility of this method, two metasurfaces are designed, including a bifocal metasurface with adjustable energy allocation and a tri-channel multiplexing metasurface. VO2-based thermochromic coatings have gained much attention in temperature-adaptive smart windows, and constructing multilayer film structures is the main way to obtain high thermochromic performances. Based on the self-developed objective-orientated automatic optimization code, the present research realized customized designs of thermochromic multilayer coatings composed of VO2, TiO2, and SiO2 from the objectives of visible luminance (Tlum) and solar light modulation (ΔTsol). The TiO2/VO2/s, VO2/TiO2/s, TiO2/VO2/TiO2/s, and SiO2/TiO2/VO2/TiO2/s (s denotes substrate) multilayer film systems were then prepared by magnetron sputtering and vacuum controllable heating, with their structures, insulator-metallic transition, and thermochromic properties being carefully studied. The result showed that the best trade-off between high Tlum and high ΔTsol was achieved for these film assemblies, and solar light modulation was mainly limited at the near-IR wavelength region of the solar spectrum, with the difference between cool- and hot-state Tlum being greatly reduced. In the case of the four-layer SiO2/TiO2/VO2/TiO2/s, very high average Tlum (60%) and high ΔTsol (14%) were obtained. A 100 × 100 mm2 of the SiO2/TiO2/VO2/TiO2/s was also prepared, and it showed an obvious temperature adjustment, and the service life can last for 14 years under normal weather conditions. With the in-depth study of open optical systems, the topological phases of non-Hermitian metasurfaces have attracted increasing attention due to their topological protection properties. Here, in this paper, a tunable non-Hermitian metasurface with bidirectional anisotropism is proposed. By incorporating the phase change material vanadium dioxide (VO2) into the metasurface, two topological exceptional points (EPs) appear in the system by adjusting the conductivity of VO2 and chiral responses appear at both EPs. This research shows that the conductivity significantly affects the reflection of the metasurface, and the zero-reflection points correspond to the EPs of the non-Hermitian system. Further results prove that circling around EPs leads to a 2π phase change, which is topologically protected and independent of the encirclement path. Therefore, this study employs an active control approach to realize two topological EPs. Through comprehensive investigations into the topological properties and chiral performance at EPs, we elucidate the mechanism for the chirality generation in non-Hermitian metasurfaces, which offers feasible solutions for the development of chiral topological devices and light transmission and modulation in future applications. The discovery of strontium niobate (SNO) as a potentially new transparent electrode has generated much interest due to its implications in various optoelectronic devices. Pristine SNO exhibits exceptionally low resistivity (∼10−4 Ω cm) at room temperature. However, this low resistivity occurs due to large number of carrier concentration in the system, which significantly affects its optical transparency (∼40%) in the visible range and hinders its practical applications as a transparent electrode. Here, we show that modulating the growth kinetics via oxygen manipulation is a feasible approach to achieve the desired optoelectronic properties. In particular, epitaxial (001) SNO thin films are grown on (001) lanthanum aluminate by pulsed laser deposition at different oxygen partial pressures and are shown to improve the optical transparency from 40% to 72% (λ = 550 nm) at a marginal cost of electrical resistivity from 2.8 to 8.1 × 10−4 Ω cm. These changes are directly linked with the multi-valence Nb-states, as evidenced by x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Furthermore, the defect-engineered SNO films exhibit multiple electronic phases that include pure metallic, coexisting metal-semiconducting-like, and pure semiconducting-like phases as evidenced by low-temperature electrical transport measurements. The intriguing metal-semiconducting coexisting phase is thoroughly analyzed using both perpendicular and angle-dependent magnetoresistance measurements, further supported by a density functional theory-based first-principles study and the observed feature is explained by the quantum correction to the conductivity. Overall, this study shows an exciting avenue for altering the optical and transport properties of SNO epitaxial thin films for their practical use as a next-generation transparent electrode. Presented here is long-range distributed vibration sensing based on internal-modulation optical frequency domain reflectometry (OFDR). In the proposed system with internal modulation, a silicon-based photonic-chip laser is used as the laser source, and by controlling the output voltage curve of an arbitrary waveform generator to induce temperature change in the external cavity of the laser, a 10-GHz optical frequency tuning range is achieved. The complexity of the proposed internal-modulation system is lower than that of the traditional external-modulation OFDR system that combines a narrow-linewidth laser with a single-sideband modulator to achieve wavelength tuning. Cross-correlation analysis is used as a sensing mechanism to evaluate the similarity between Rayleigh scatter signals and to achieve vibration event localization. Experimental comparison is made of the vibration sensing performance of the external- and internal-modulation systems, and for a vibration event generated at a distance of 100.95 km, they locate it with a sensing spatial resolution of 43.0 m and 16.8 m, respectively. The results indicates that the proposed distributed vibration sensing based on internal modulation has better sensing performance and lower complexity compared to the traditional external-modulation system. In addition, the proposed system is single-ended and involves no optical amplification, which makes it very suitable for ultra-long-range sensing. Background: The use of light to control the activity of living cells is a promising approach in cardiac research due to its unparalleled spatio-temporal selectivity and minimal invasiveness. Ziapin2, a newly synthesized azobenzene compound, has recently been reported as an efficient tool for light-driven modulation of excitation-contraction coupling (ECC) in human-induced pluripotent stem cells–derived cardiomyocytes. However, the exact biophysical mechanism of this process remains incompletely understood. Methods: To address this, we performed a detailed electrophysiological characterization in a more mature cardiac model, specifically adult mouse ventricular myocytes (AMVMs). Results: Our in vitro results demonstrate that Ziapin2 can photomodulate cardiac ECC in mature AMVMs without affecting the main transporters and receptors located within the sarcolemma. We established a connection between Ziapin2-induced membrane thickness modulation and light-generated action potentials by showcasing the pivotal role of stretch-activated channels (SACs). Notably, our experimental findings, through pharmacological blockade, suggest that non-selective SACs might serve as the biological culprit responsible for the effect. Conclusions: Taken together, these findings elucidate the intricacies of Ziapin2-mediated photostimulation mechanism and open new perspectives for its application in cardiac research. Electrochromic (EC) materials and devices with potential‐driven optical modulation abilities have open possibilities for creating innovative and adaptive technologies. EC materials that reversibly switch from transmissive to dark or vice versa are beneficial in various applications. Though many EC materials are reported, several key issues exist, such as synthetic complexity, low reproducibility, and residual absorption. An elegant design strategy is reported here to develop a heteroatom‐free, transmissive to dark electrochrome (TBF), overcoming the abovementioned challenges. Furthermore, the effect of heavy atoms on the EC properties is evaluated by substituting the bromide group with the TBF core. The synthesized molecules are electrochemically stable and reversible for 1000 continuous cycles with a coloration efficiency above 200 cm2C−1 and a ∆T% of 65% for TBF and 73% for TBF‐Br. Thermochromic materials with tunable optical absorption over the NIR and visible spectral regions, and exhibiting colorless‐to‐colored transitions, are of interest in relevant applications such as invisible security inks or solar light‐energy management. Despite so, the most common commercial thermochromic materials, based on phase‐change‐material mixtures of spirocompounds (leuco‐dyes), allow narrow spectral modulation within the UV/vis regions and mostly produce colored‐to‐colorless transition, hampering their applicability beyond novelty products. In contrast, materials intrinsically thermochromic in the NIR, require time‐consuming syntheses for their spectral and transition temperature tunability. Herein these challenges are overcome by replacing conventional leuco‐dyes with Ketocyanines that exhibit strong color sensitivity on external multifactor, i.e. polarity, aggregation state, and pH, through different intermolecular interaction mechanisms, allowing fine and straightforward spectral tunability. Their absorption can be further shifted to the NIR region (λmax = 870 nm) by increasing the number of methine units, giving access to the desired colorless‐to‐colored transition (Δλ = 280 nm), via negative thermochromism. The preserved transitions of the microstructured mixtures are of interest for future thermochromic inks. Finally, their acid/base vapors response makes these multistimuli responsive materials highly attractive for applications such as anti‐counterfeiting, bioimaging, and optical information storage for food packaging. Neuromorphic systems that can emulate the behavior of neurons have garnered increasing interest across interdisciplinary fields due to their potential applications in neuromorphic computing, artificial intelligence and brain‐machine interfaces. However, the optical modulation of nanofluidic ion transport for neuromorphic functions has been scarcely reported. Herein, inspired by biological systems that rely on ions as signal carriers for information perception and processing, we present a nanofluidic transistor based on a metal–organic framework membrane (MOFM) with optically modulated ion transport properties, which can mimic the functions of biological synapses. Through the dynamic modulation of synaptic weight, we successfully replicate intricate learning‐experience behaviors and Pavlovian associate learning processes by employing sequential optical stimuli. Additionally, we demonstrate the application of the International Morse Code with the nanofluidic device using patterned optical pulse signals, showing its encoding and decoding capabilities in information processing process. Neuromorphic devices capable of emulating biological synaptic behaviors are crucial for implementing brain‐like information processing and computing. Emerging 2D ferroelectric neuromorphic devices provide an effective means of updating synaptic weight aside from conventional electrical/optical modulations. Here, by further synergizing with an energy‐efficient synaptic plasticity strategy, a multimodal mechano‐photonic synaptic memory device based on 2D asymmetric ferroelectric heterostructure is presented, which can be modulated by external mechanical behavior and light illumination. By integrating the asymmetric ferroelectric heterostructured field‐effect transistor and a triboelectric nanogenerator, the mechanical displacement‐derived triboelectric potential is ready for gating, programming, and plasticizing the synaptic device, resulting in superior electrical properties of high on/off ratios (> 107), large storage windows (equivalent to ≈95 V), excellent charge retention capability (> 104 s), good endurance (> 103 cycles), and primary synaptic behaviors. Besides, optical illumination can effectively synergize with mechanoplasticity to implement multimodal spatiotemporally correlated dynamic logic. The demonstrated multimodal memory synapse provides a facile and promising strategy for multifunctional sensory memory, interactive neuromorphic devices, and future brain‐like electronics embodying artificial intelligence. Developing high performance electrochromic materials with energy storage function is essential for next generation smart display devices. Here, a double-layer NiO film (NiO-dl) was prepared by compositing the defective NiO (d-NiO) with the crystalline NiO (c-NiO), with a unique prismatic nanosheet array structure. The synergistic effect as well as the large active area with defect sites and valence modulation brought about by the (111) crystal plane-oriented growth of the sputtering process can promote the intercalation and extraction of OH− and Li+, which greatly enhances the electrochemical properties. Specifically, the NiO-dl film achieves a prominent optical modulation covering visible region (89.5 % in KOH and 64.8 % in Li+ electrolyte at 550 nm) and near-infrared region (54.5 % in KOH and 37.2 % in Li+ electrolyte at 1000 nm), a high transparent bleached state (92.7 %), a superior coloring efficiency (44.7 cm2 C−1) and robust stability (95.1 % retention after 1000 cycles). A high area capacitance of 99.5 mF cm−2 at 0.14 mA cm−2 with the promising cycling performance exhibits the supercapacitor characteristics. Electrochromic technology plays a pivotal role in various industries, offering significant benefits in energy efficiency and sustainability. By efficiently modulating sunlight, it reduces dependence on traditional climate control systems, thus decreasing overall energy consumption. Among electrochromic materials, tungsten oxide (WO 3) is highly favored for its outstanding stability and superior optical modulation amplitude. However, the escalating demands of commercial applications necessitate enhancements in electrochromic performance, achievable through doping or composite designs. This study investigates the electrochromic characteristics of novel niobium tungsten oxide (Nb 18 W 16 O 93) thin films, employing a gel electrolyte and examining their structural, optical, and electrochemical attributes. Compared to pure WO 3 , the Nb 18 W 16 O 93 -based electrochromic device exhibited a significant optical modulation of 55.1% in the visible spectrum and 31.3% in the near-infrared region. The gel-based device not only provides safety benefits over liquid electrolytes by mitigating leakage risks but also features rapid switching response times, with a coloration duration of 3.9 s and a bleaching interval of 3.6 s. The computer-assisted inverse design of photonic computing, especially by leveraging artificial intelligence algorithms, offers great convenience to accelerate the speed of development and improve calculation accuracy. However, traditional thickness-based modulation methods are hindered by large volume and difficult fabrication process, making it hard to meet the data-driven requirements of flexible light modulation. Here, we propose a diffractive deep neural network (D2NN) framework based on a three-layer all-dielectric phased transmitarray as hidden layers, which can perform the classification of handwritten digits. By tailoring the radius of a silicon nanodisk of a meta-atom, the metasurface can realize the phase profile calculated by D2NN and maintain a relative high transmittance of 0.9 at a wavelength of 600 nm. The designed image classifier consists of three layers of phase-only metasurfaces, each of which contains 1024 units, mimicking a fully connected neural network through the diffraction of light fields. The classification task of handwriting digits from the '0' to '5' dataset is verified, with an accuracy of over 90% on the blind test dataset, as well as demonstrated by the full-wave simulation. Furthermore, the performance of the more complex animal image classification task is also validated by increasing the number of neurons to enhance the connectivity of the neural network. Metal–organic frameworks (MOFs) deliver potential applications in electrochromism and energy storage. However, the poor intrinsic conductivity of MOFs in electrolytes seriously hampers the development of the above‐mentioned electrochemical applications, especially in one MOF electrode. Herein, a new Ni‐based MOF (denoted Ni‐DPNDI) is proposed with enhanced conductivity by π‐delocalized DPNDI connectors. Predictably, the obtained Ni‐DPNDI MOF achieves a conductivity of up to 4.63 S∙m−1 at 300 K. Profiting from its unique electronic structure, the Ni‐DPNDI MOF delivers excellent electrochromic and energy storage performance with a great optical modulation (60.8%), a fast switching speed (tc = 7.9 s and tb = 6.4 s), a moderate specific capacitance (25.3 mAh·g−1) and good cycle stability over 2000 times. Meanwhile, energy storage capacity is visual by the coloration states of Ni‐DPNDI film. As a proof of the potential application, a large‐area (100 cm2) electrochromic energy storage smart window is further designed and displayed. In this study, cobalt-doped hexagonal phase WO3 nanorods were prepared by a template-free hydrothermal method. The effects of varying the cobalt doping concentration on the microscopic morphology and electrochromic properties of hexagonal phase WO3 films were investigated. Films synthesized with the optimal cobalt element doping concentration demonstrate a notable improvement in their electrochromic properties compared to the pure hexagonal phase WO3 films. The film doped with 1.5% Co exhibited excellent cycling stability, retaining 98.55% of its original value after 500 cycles. The introduction of cobalt results in the formation of a nanorod structure with a high specific surface area within the film. This structure provides additional reaction sites for the electrochromic reaction process, thereby enhancing the optical modulation and coloration efficiency of WO3. Understanding the structure formation and its underlying physical mechanism is a fundamental topic in condensed matter systems, with both academic and practical implications. Soft matter is playing a remarkable role in current era of information explosion, demonstrating enormous potential in integrated functional photonics. As unique soft photonic crystals with cubic symmetries, not only liquid crystalline blue phases (BPs) have circularly polarized selective reflection and ultra-fast electro-optical response, but also their three-dimensional photonic structures increase degrees-of-freedom for multiplexed optical modulation. In the thriving field of soft-matter-based photonics, precise and programmable engineering of BP crystal orientation is of vital importance for planar optical elements, which remains a challenging task due to the complexity of the nucleation process as well as the interaction between the BP building blocks and the boundary conditions. Aiming to gain a comprehensive understanding of how to tailor the orientation of BP crystals for the photonic applications of next generation, here we discuss the solutions for uniformity improvement and orientation control of BP crystals, about which a few of examples in combination with the underlying mechanisms are explained. In addition, the remaining challenges and the efforts that are expected are also reviewed. We expect this work provides a deeper understanding of phase transitions and resulting structures in soft crystals, which may open encouraging perspectives for their applications in photonics, biosensing, interfacial, and chemical engineering. Featured Application: Photonic integrated circuits. In this study, the potential of employing SiNx (silicon nitride) waveguide platforms to enable the use of liquid-crystal-based phase shifters for on-chip optical modulators was thoroughly investigated using 3D-FDTD (3D finite-difference time-domain) simulations. The entire structure of liquid-crystal-based Mach–Zehnder interferometer (MZI) optical modulators, consisting of multi-mode interferometer splitters, different tapering sections, and liquid-crystal-based phase shifters, was systematically and holistically investigated with a view to developing a compact, wideband, and CMOS-compatible (complementary metal-oxide semiconductor) bias voltage optical modulator with competitive modulation efficiency, good fabrication tolerance, and single-mode operation using the same SiNx waveguide layer for the entire device. The trade-off between several important parameters is critically discussed in order to reach a conclusion on the possible optimized parameter sets. Contrary to previous demonstrations, this investigation focused on the potential of achieving such an optical device using the same SiNx waveguide layer for the entire device, including both the passive and active regions. Significantly, we show that it is necessary to carefully select the phase shifter length of the LC-based (liquid crystal) MZI optical modulator, as the phase shifter length required to obtain a π phase shift could be as low as a few tens of microns; therefore, a phase shifter length that is too long can contradictorily worsen the optical modulation. Ultrafast all-optical control has been a subject of wide-spread attention as a method of manipulating optical fields using light excitation on extremely short time scales. As a fundamental form of ultrafast all-optical control, all-optical switching has achieved sub-picosecond switch speeds in the visible, infrared, and terahertz spectral regions. However, due to the lack of suitable materials, ultrafast all-optical control in the ultraviolet range remains in its early stages. We demonstrate sub-picosecond all-optical switching in the ultraviolet wavelength by designing a Si3N4-ITO Fabry–Pérot resonance aligns with the edge of the interband transition region of ITO. The response time of 500 fs achieved at a pump fluence as low as 0.17 mJ/cm2. Notably, unlike conventional binary switches (0, 1), this biphasic all-optical switch enables the modulation of optical intensity with positive, zero, and negative ΔR/R (0, 1, −1) at the same wavelength, all achieved with a switching speed of 680 fs at a pump fluence of 0.45 mJ/cm2. Dual‐band electrochromic (DBEC) smart windows are an emerging energy‐saving technology, especially those constructed from single‐component DBEC materials as they offer an easy way to independently regulate visible (VIS) and near‐infrared (NIR) light. However, the current complicated organic ligand approach used to synthesize single‐component DBEC materials necessitates a post‐annealing treatment, which may severely compromise the scalability of DBEC smart windows. Herein, one organic ligand‐free process is developed to produce well‐controlled Nb‐doped anatase TiO2 nanocrystals (NTO NCs) followed by spraying on arbitrary substrates, giving NTO rigid or flexible films with good DBEC properties and a high optical modulation over 92%. A prototype of a 20 cm × 20 cm DBEC smart window is built. The simplicity and scalability of the synthesis and fabrication process make it a scalable approach to constructing large‐area electrochromic smart windows and foils, with promising applications in fields such as buildings and automobiles. Despite the great success achieved by recently developed neural interfaces, multi‐site monitoring and regulating neural activities with high spatial and temporal selectivity remain a challenge. Here, an implantable, remotely controllable, fiber‐based ferromagnetic system permitting 3D navigation, omnidirectional steering, multiplexing neural recording, and modulation is presented. A family of fibers is fabricated that allows for the heterogeneous integration of ferromagnetic, optical, microfluidic, electrical, and electrochemical components into the proposed multifunctional neural interface. Coupling with magnetic actuation, it is demonstrated that this system can enable optical and chemical modulation of local neural activities across multiple distant regions in rodent brains, while simultaneously allowing the real‐time monitoring of neural electrophysiological and chemical activities. Furthermore, to systematically identify altered patterns of behaviors, brain activities and dopamine release during optogenetic modulation of specific nuclei in Parkinsonian animals this platform is employed. Energy crisis and worsening greenhouse effects cause unprecedented global environmental and economic‐sustainability challenges. The emerging all‐season thermal regulation technology that can provide comfort to humans without consuming external‐energy demonstrates promising prospects. Inspired by the temperature‐accommodative skin of the color‐changing rain‐frog, a biodegradable nature‐skin‐derived thermochromic membrane (PCTM‐H) is nano‐engineered for active all‐season thermal management using the integrative interfacially wet‐casting film‐forming and spraying strategy of nature‐skin to incorporate polyvinyl alcohol and thermochromic microcapsules. Its outstanding thermochromic origins allow it to switch adaptively between cooling and heating modes without additional energy input. PCTM‐H has a light color with high reflectivity in hot summer and a dark‐color that absorbs solar radiation in cold winter, with an overall visible light modulation of ≈53.5%, solar modulation of ≈32.2%, and a remarkable emissivity in mid‐infrared band (≈86.7%). PCTM‐H has exceptional adaptive thermal management capabilities for multitudinous outdoor‐applications. Simulation results show that PCTM‐H has prominent energy‐saving efficiency in cities with different climate zones when utilized as roof‐protection membranes. Additionally, the distinguished mechanical features, weatherability, and bio‐degradability of PCTM‐H substantially increase its potential applications. Doping and alloying induce defect states in atomically thin transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs), leading to strong carrier–phonon interactions. The robust excitonic behavior of these layered materials can be modified by injecting a high density of charge carriers. However, comprehending the influence of carrier–phonon and carrier–carrier interactions on the optical properties of 2D materials is crucial for their optoelectronic and photonic applications. Here, transient absorption (TA) spectroscopy is employed to demonstrate the modulation of the transient optical behavior of TMDCs through doping and excitation near Mott density. The TA spectra reveal broadening attributed to carrier–carrier and carrier–phonon interactions, with the broadening being particularly pronounced in vanadium (V) doped TMDCs due to the hybridization of defect and exciton transitions. Analysis of TA kinetics suggests the involvement of various carrier species in the carrier dynamics of TMDCs, with the influence of mid‐gap carriers dominating at higher excitation densities. Nonetheless, the presence of strong carrier–phonon coupling in V‐doped TMDCs is demonstrated by temperature‐dependent Raman and photoluminescence spectroscopy. The results reveal that the enhanced coupling between acoustic phonons and carriers can lead to multiphonon emission. This paper considers the online routing, modulation, spectrum, and core allocation problem in elastic optical networks. Three algorithms are proposed to minimize the bandwidth blocking probability while taking into account the impact of interference from established lightpaths. These algorithms are based on a sequence of alternative paths, ordered in terms of increasing lengths, determined by Yen's algorithm. Each of the algorithms for the selected single or dual lightpath enforces the constraints of spectrum continuity, contiguity of the slots, and non-overlapping of the spectra with the established lightpaths, maximizes the number of bits per symbol, and selects a specific core on each link of the path. Simulation studies performed for two sample networks showed that the crosstalk has a significant impact on the bandwidth blocking probability. The best results were obtained by iterating over all paths and all slots, selecting the lightpath with the lowest average crosstalk per slot, consisting of the most loaded cores. Compared to mode‐locked oscillators, gain‐switched diodes (GSD) have the key advantage of repetition‐rate agility. Yet, large pulse duration and poor coherence of the GSD pulses greatly limit their applications. Here, a GSD‐pumped Raman fiber amplifier is demonstrated, which can effectively generate femtosecond laser pulses with both repetition‐rate and wavelength agility. It is proved that both nonlinear optical gain and single‐frequency seed in the fiber amplifier play critical roles for improving the coherence of the generated laser pulses. In the experimental demonstration, pumped by 1065 nm GSD pulses, the nonlinear fiber amplifier can generate highly coherent 1121 nm femtosecond Raman pulses with up to 80.2% conversion efficiency. The Raman pulses can maintain high performance within the repetition‐rate tuning range from 1 to 150 MHz. The potential for generating 1178 nm femtosecond Raman pulses is also demonstrated with an optical conversion efficiency of 63.8%. This all‐fiber based femtosecond laser with both repetition‐rate and wavelength agility is a promising light source for applications such as nonlinear microscopy and micromachining. High‐efficiency spatial light phase modulation with wide operating bandwidth is highly significant yet challenging. Dynamic metasurfaces leveraging active materials with tunable optical response provide a promising solution. Current work is generally confronted with restricted operation bandwidth and diminished modulation efficiency, constrained by the limited tunable range and inherent absorption of active materials particular at optical frequency. Recently, the emergence of lossless phase‐change material Sb2Se3 has garnered widespread attention. Its unique characteristics, including near‐zero absorption at near‐infrared and a substantial refractive index contrast ≈0.93 during phase transition, enable the possibility of high‐performance spatial light modulation. Pioneering studies have validated the capability of lossless phase‐change metasurfaces for wavefront control, but are typically restricted to limited efficiency. Here, a hybrid phase‐change metasurface utilizing over‐coupled resonances supported by Sb2Se3 nanoholes is proposed. For the first time in optical frequency, high‐efficiency 4‐level phase modulation covering over π range is experimentally demonstrated with a sizable operating bandwidth of 42 nm and a minimum reflectance of exceeding 0.5. Leveraging optically driven localized phase‐transition technique, dynamic beam deflection is further demonstrated. The work validates the tremendous potential of phase‐change metasurfaces in achieving advanced spatial light control, signifying significant progress for the development and application of phase‐change photonic devices. The phantom array effect (PAE) is a series of repeated images that may be perceived when a person moves their eyes in large saccades across a light source (or a specular reflection of that light source) that is modulating in output over time. Fifty-five people, including a group of 25 who experience migraine, evaluated the visibility and annoyingness of phantom arrays produced by 85 unique temporal light modulation waveforms (including sine, rectangular, complex and DC waveforms) generated using an LED placed against a black background. Those with migraine exhibited higher average visibility compared to those without migraine (p = 0.019) and were relatively more sensitive at higher frequencies (p < 0.001). Younger participants also found more stimuli to be visible (p < 0.001). The threshold sensitivity function was similar to that developed for the phantom array visibility measure (PAVM), and PAVM was effective in predicting visibility (R 2 = 0.87 for the relevant region of PAVM < 3). While those in the migraine group did not report seeing the PAE more often in everyday life at a statistically significant level, they reported being more annoyed by it and having more unwanted physiological responses (headaches, eye fatigue and distraction/disorientation). Members of the migraine group were also more likely to have changed their behaviour in architectural spaces (such as leaving a restaurant with 'flickering' lights). In the four hours after completing the experiment, 64% of the migraine group (vs. 19% of the non-migraine group) reported experiencing discomfort or an adverse reaction. Temporal light modulation and its potential adverse visual effects on human observers, collectively known as temporal light artefacts (TLAs), have been limited by the European Union Ecodesign regulation. Limitations on two key TLA metrics, flicker and stroboscopic effect, were introduced in September 2021. This study analyses the impact of this regulation on commercial LED lamps by measuring multiple different consumer-grade LED E27 retrofit lamps by several manufacturers before and after the regulation. The lamps purchased after the Ecodesign regulation seem to favour a certain type of LED driver that provides the best TLA behaviour of all lamp types. The regulation, with respect to TLA, has resulted in the replacement of ill-behaving lamp types in the market by newer lamps with better TLA characteristics. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study investigated the impact of temporal light modulation (TLM) generated by light-emitting diode lighting on visual task performance. Five lighting conditions were used in this study. One was a direct current, and the other four used pulse-width modulation with 60 Hz, 100 Hz, 400 Hz and 1000 Hz modulation frequencies, respectively. The study assessed participants' performance in various visual tasks involving eye movements, including arithmetic problem-solving, linking numbers tasks and the CamBlobs™ Contrast Sensitivity test. The experimental results showed that the response time of visual tasks related to typical daily eye movements, such as the arithmetic problem-solving task and the CamBlobs™ Contrast Sensitivity task, were in proportion to the PstLM, which showed the influence of flicker. In contrast, the linking numbers task, which required more extensive eye movements and object movements, was more relevant to the stroboscopic visibility measure than P st LM , which showed a higher influence of stroboscopic effect than flicker. These findings underscore the significance of considering TLM parameters when designing lighting systems for environments where visual tasks are crucial. This research contributes to our understanding of how light modulation affects human performance in visually demanding settings and has implications for optimising lighting design to enhance task performance. At temporal light modulation (TLM) frequencies between 80 Hz and 20 000 Hz observers may perceive a series of repeated images called the phantom array effect (PAE) when they move their eyes in large saccades across a modulating light source or across a scene lit by the modulating light source. To date, there is no well-established measure for quantifying PAE visibility, but there is growing awareness of the need for one among design professionals and sensitive populations. This paper documents a new measure, the phantom array visibility measure (PAVM), which is based on the results of recent human factors experiments. The measure follows the mathematical underpinning used by the flicker visibility measure and the stroboscopic visibility measure, where the time-domain TLM waveform is converted into its Fourier frequency components; each component is evaluated through a threshold curve of modulation depth, then summed through an equation employing a Minkowski exponent. There are multiple metrics used in research and industry to describe the visibility of temporal light modulation (TLM), colloquially referred to as 'flicker'. However, the metrics are not straightforward to calculate, and the values sometimes vary according to sampling rates. This work addresses the vagaries in processing TLM waveform data and calculating the metrics. For each TLM metric, its sensitivity to sampling rate is presented, followed by recommendations for improving the reliability and consistency of calculated metrics. Appropriate sampling rates are proposed according to the nature of the waveform and metric. The analyses of this paper are based on ideal waveforms without noise or instability, but the effects of sampling rate also apply to real-world waveforms. Some metrics, such as the Stroboscopic Visibility Measure, were relatively stable (i.e. produced the same value regardless of sampling rate) – within the ranges for which they are defined – for sinusoidal and/or rectangular TLM waveforms. In contrast, short-term flicker indicator (P st LM ) and perceived modulation (M P) values exhibited greater variability based on sampling rate. Metric values from sinusoidal waveforms were generally more stable than those from rectangular waveforms, although P st LM showed inconsistency even with sinusoidal TLM. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Solid-state light sources can be more prone to larger temporal light modulation (TLM) than conventional sources. TLM visibility depends on wave shape, frequency, modulation depth and duty cycle, and is affected by the sensitivity of the observer. TLM can be visible well above the critical flicker fusion frequency, when there is relative movement between the observer's eyes and light source, lighted space or moving objects in the field of view. This human subjects experiment explored visibility of the stroboscopic effect (SE) versus the phantom array effect (PAE) with targeted tasks under 74 TLM waveforms. The results showed the SE visibility peaks between 90 Hz and 120 Hz, while the PAE visibility peaks between 500 Hz and 1000 Hz. The phantom array is visible to sensitive participants at 6000 Hz. Both effects are more visible under rectangular versus sinusoidal TLM, higher modulation, and when duty cycles are 10% or 30% versus 50%. Higher sensitivity participants, differentiated using the Leiden Visual Sensitivity Scale, rated TLM waveforms as more visible, especially those inherently harder to see. Recently, the Fabry–Perot (F–P) cavity electrochromic devices, which are constructed by combining nano-size inorganic electrochromic material WO 3 and reflective metal layers, have attracted considerable attention due to their potentials in the fields of dynamic multicolor displays and active camouflage. However, in the few studies that have been reported, the peak reflectance of flexible F–P cavity multicolor electrochromic devices in the visible wavelength band is generally lower than 30 %, which limits their reflective display and camouflage effects in high-brightness environments. Thus, we have combined multicolor reflective electrochromic electrodes in WO 3 /Au asymmetric F–P nanocavity constructed by magnetron sputtering on a Nylon 66 porous substrate with a highly transparent UV-cured gel electrolyte and a PET plastic sealing procedure. As a result, a flexible and dynamic multicolor electrochromic skin with high reflectance (R max ＞50 %) and excellent flexibility (bending radius of 4 mm) has been fabricated. The WO 3 electrochromic layer at the top works as the dynamic dielectric layer in the broadband absorption Fabry–Perot cavity, and the inert metal Au layer at the bottom works as the reflective layer. The WO 3 /Au asymmetric F–P cavity can acutely capture the variation in optical constants of WO 3 due to the thickness change and electric-driven effects. This cavity facilitates the selective reflection and absorption of the energy distribution of the spectrum after the induced interferometric resonance. As a result, the cavity exhibits a rich array of structural colors, including ocher, taupe, yellow, orange, green, and violet. The electrochromic skin exhibits a fast switching time and maintains 99.43 % of the optical modulation amplitude (ΔR) after 110 coloring/bleaching cycles. Microalgae and cyanobacteria are photosynthetic microorganisms with significant biotechnological potential for the production of bioactive compounds, making them a promising resource for diverse industrial applications. This study presents the development and validation of a modular, droplet-based microfluidic photobioreactor (µPBR) designed for high-throughput screening and cultivation under controlled light conditions. The µPBR, based on polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) tubing and a 4-channel LED illumination system, enables precise modulation of light intensity, wavelength, and photoperiod, facilitating dose–response experiments. Synechococcus elongatus UTEX 2973 and Chlorella vulgaris were used to demonstrate the system's capacity to support photosynthetic growth under various conditions. The results indicate that continuous illumination, particularly under blue and mixed blue-red light, promotes higher autofluorescence and chlorophyll a content in cyanobacteria Synechococcus elongatus UTEX2973, while Chlorella vulgaris achieved optimal growth under a 16:8 light-dark cycle with moderate light intensity. This µPBR offers not only a flexible, scalable platform for optimizing growth parameters but also allows for the investigation of highly resolved dose response screenings of environmental stressors such as salinity. To achieve higher visible light communication (VLC) traffic capacity, using the wide bandwidth light-emitting diode (LED) and spectral efficiency modulation signal, is currently the most commonly used method. In this demonstration, we apply the orthogonal frequency division multiplexing quadrature amplitude modulation (OFDM-QAM) with bit- and power-loading algorithm on single blue LED to achieve >1 Gbit/s VLC capacity, when a 400 MHz bandwidth avalanche photodiode (APD)-based receiver (Rx) is exploited for decoding. Here, the higher sensitivity APD can be applied to compensate for the wireless VLC link length in the proposed LED VLC system, and due to the lower LED illumination (255 to 40 lux), is used for the indoor access network after passing the wireless link length of 1 to 4 m. As a result, using single blue LED can achieve 0.962 to 1.057 Gbit/s OFDM rate with available 400 MHz bandwidth APD in poorly illuminated condition indoors without applying analogy equalization. Light quality optimization is a cost-effective method for increasing leafy vegetable quality in plant factories. Light-emitting diodes (LEDs) that enable the precise modulation of light quality were used in this study to examine the effects of red-blue (RB), red-blue-green (RBG), red-blue-purple (RBP), and red-blue-far-red (RBF) lights on the growth, antioxidant capacity, and nitrogen metabolism of Chinese cabbage leaves, while white light served as the control (CK). Results showed that the chlorophyll, carotenoid, vitamin C, amino acid, total flavonoid, and antioxidant levels of Chinese cabbage were all significantly increased under RBP combined light treatment. Meanwhile, RBG combined light treatment significantly increased the levels of amino acids but decreased the nitrite content of Chinese cabbage. In addition, RBF combined light treatment remarkably increased the amino acid levels but decreased the antioxidant capacity of Chinese cabbage. In conclusion, the addition of purple light to red-blue light was effective in improving the nutritional value and antioxidant capacity of Chinese cabbage. Electrochromic (EC) materials allow for dynamic tuning of optical properties via an applied electric field, presenting great potential in energy-efficient technologies, such as smart windows for effective light and temperature regulation. The precise control of precursor concentration has proven to be a powerful approach in tailoring the physicochemical properties of semiconducting metal oxides. In this study, we employed a one-step electrodeposition technique to fabricate tungsten oxide (WO3) thin films, systematically exploring how varying precursor concentrations influence the material's characteristics. X-ray diffraction analysis revealed significant changes in diffraction patterns, reflecting subtle structural modifications due to concentration variations. Additionally, scanning electron microscopy revealed significant changes in the microstructure, showing a progression from small nanogranules to larger agglomerations within the film matrix. The W-25 mM thin film delivered exceptional EC performance, efficiently accommodating lithium ions while showcasing superior EC properties. The optimized electrode, denoted as W-25 mM, showcased exceptional EC metrics, featuring the highest optical modulation at 82.66%, outstanding reversibility at 99%, and a notably high coloring efficiency of 83.01 cm2/C. These findings emphasize the importance of precursor concentration optimization in enhancing the EC properties of WO3 thin films, contributing to the advancement of high-performance, energy-efficient materials. Optomechanical oscillators stand out as high-performance and versatile candidates for serving as reference clocks in sequential photonic integrated circuits. Indeed, they have the unique capability of simultaneously generating mechanical tones and optical signal modulations at frequencies determined by their geometrical design. In this context, the concept of synchronization introduces a powerful means to precisely coordinate the dynamics of multiple oscillators in a controlled manner, therefore increasing efficiency and preventing errors in signal processing photonic systems or communication interfaces. In this work, we demonstrate the cascaded injection locking of a pair of silicon-based optomechanical crystal cavities acting as optomechanical oscillators to an external reference signal that subtly modulates the laser driving only one of them. In contrast to most previous implementations, both cavities support isolated optical resonances and interact by a weak mechanical interconnection. This configuration allows one cavity to be used for probing the mechanical perturbation generated by the oscillator that receives the external forcing. The combination of the obtained results, supported by a numerical model, with remote optical injection locking schemes discussed in the literature lays the groundwork for the distribution of reference signals within large networks of processing elements in future phonon–photon hybrid circuits. As a promising energy‐saving technology, electrochromic technology has been widely investigated for practical applications. However, there is relatively few research about the applications under certain extreme climatic conditions since gel electrolytes often occur freezing and volatilizing. In this work, a poly(vinyl alcohol)/poly(acrylic acid) (PVA/PAA) gel electrolyte with good anti‐freezing and heat‐resistance performance is developed. Utilizing hydrated tungsten oxide (WO3·xH2O) and polyaniline (PANI) as electrochromic materials and the PVA/PAA gel as electrolyte, a WO3·xH2O/PVA/PAA‐ethylene glycol (EG)‐H2O/PANI electrochromic device (WO3·xH2O/PAEH/PANI ECD) is obtained, which can work efficiently at wide operating temperatures from −20 to 60 °C. The device has multiple reversible color changes, a large optical modulation of 66.2% at 600 nm, high coloration efficiency of 386.0 cm2 C−1, fast responses (with coloration/bleaching times of 1.3/1.1 s), as well as excellent cyclic stability (82.0% of the initial optical modulation is still retained after 2100 cycles). Mixed lead–tin halide perovskites, as highly sensitive materials in the near-infrared region, hold significant potential for optoelectronic device applications. Here, mixed lead–tin halide perovskite saturable absorbers (SAs) have been developed by coupling with the side-polished surfaces of the single-mode fibers and excellent saturable absorption effects of the mixed lead–tin halide perovskite SAs have been demonstrated in the near-infrared region. By constructing the in-gap site assisted carrier transfer mode, the saturation absorption process of the mixed lead–tin halide perovskite SAs can be well explained, in which defects as in-gap sites can help the photon-generated carriers transfer into the conduction band and promote the Pauli-blocking-induced absorption bleaching in the SA. Moreover, ytterbium-doped fiber lasers based on perovskite SAs have been fabricated, and mode-locked operations at 1040 nm are achieved using the mixed lead–tin halide perovskite SA, generating ultra-short pulses with a pulse width of 683 fs, 3 dB bandwidth of 4.88 nm, signal-to-noise ratio exceeding 49.74 dB, and a repetition rate of 3.74 MHz. Our findings demonstrate that the mixed lead–tin halide perovskite SAs have excellent optical modulation capability and promising applications in the field of ultrafast photonics. Cholesteric liquid crystals (CLCs) with chiral nanostructures take on great significance in light modulation for optical devices, especially involving the features of circularly polarized and dynamic structural colors. However, on‐demand self‐assembly by photoprogramming still remains a challenge that is ascribed to the unpredictable variation of the helical superstructures in the existing CLCs induced by light‐driven chiral switches. Here, novel binary chiral systems are designed to construct visible‐light‐actuated CLCs with multi‐degrees of freedom, including adjustable circular polarization, bidirectional photochromism, and manipulable photonic bands. Such systems consist of an o‐fluoroazobenzene‐containing chiral switch and an inert chiral dopant, whose interaction dominates the strategies of chiral cooperation or conflict to determine the CLC handedness as well as shift direction of the selective reflection. Particularly, the precise tuning range of the structural color is tailored by programmable helical twisting power to enable diverse paradigms of light‐actuated patterning. The unprecedented quantitative manipulation of circularly polarized structural colors offers unique photonic attributes for applications in information encoding and multiplexed communication. Bound states in the continuum (BICs) have been engineered in periodic photonic systems to achieve diverse polarization behavior in momentum space. By breaking C2z symmetry of photonic crystal slabs (PhCS), purely circular polarization, which hold significant potential for applications in topological physics and chiral optics, can be achieved near the BICs. In this study, the intriguing phenomenon of BICs on the degenerate band of PhCS with a triangular lattice featuring cylindrical holes are investigated. Unlike previous studies that mainly focused on BICs on non‐degenerate photonic bands, this research reveals a sophisticated interplay between BICs and Dirac points on the more intricate degenerate photonic band. This interaction gives birth to two pairs of purely circular polarizations with opposite chirality, even without breaking any symmetry of the PhCS. Additionally, It is find that by further breaking the σz mirror symmetry of the PhCS, these purely circular polarization states can be significantly amplified. This findings not only enrich the polarization responses of high‐Q photonic devices but also enables the modulation of chiral light, laying the groundwork for the creation of high‐quality optical devices with precisely engineered polarization properties. Computer holography is a prominent technique for reconstructing customized three-dimensional (3D) diffraction fields. However, the quality of optical reconstruction remains a fundamental challenge in 3D computer holography, especially for the 3D diffraction fields with physically continuous and extensive depth range. Here, we propose a 3D computer-generated hologram (CGH) optimization framework with phase space tailoring. Based on phase space analysis of the space and frequency properties in both lateral and axial directions, the intensity of the 3D diffraction field is adequately sampled across a large depth range. This sampling ensures the reconstructed intensity distribution to be comprehensively constrained with physical consistency. A physics-informed loss function is constructed based on the phase space tailoring to optimize the CGH with suppression of vortex stagnation. Numerical and optical experiments demonstrate the proposed method significantly enhances the 3D optical reconstructions with suppressed speckle noise across a continuous and extensive depth range. The light field display technology based on panel light modulation has obvious industrial advantages. However, light field displays still causes discomfort for users in practical applications, due to issues such as angle of view, number of viewpoints, and crosstalk, etc. As a new type of high performance 2D display technology, mini/micro light emitting diode (MLED) has the potential to provide higher quality 3D display effects, but it may also bring new technological challenges. This paper provides a detailed investigation of technical principles and the latest research progress in light field display technology based on panel light modulation, and analyzes the industrial and academic research difficulties, which are brought about by the combination of MLED and naked-eye light field display. This paper is the first to complete a technical review specifically focused on MLED and naked-eye light field display, which is expected to accelerate the technological development and application process of naked-eye light field display based on MLED panels. Harnessing confined light on a subwavelength scale within Fano metasurfaces enhances light‐matter interaction on a flexible, low‐loss substrate. This approach enables the integration of ultra‐thin semiconducting films for designing low‐power, ultrafast switchable terahertz, and optical meta devices. Here, an ultra‐thin, ∼λ/6000 germanium overlayers of 25nm or 50nm is thermally evaporated onto a flexible Fano metallic metasurface to achieve ultrafast optical modulation of terahertz radiation. A remarkable 85% modulation depth with an ultrafast speed of 400 GHz is obtained in the resonant transmission. These ultrathin, flexible, and ultrafast functional metasurfaces pave the way for developing flexible terahertz active meta devices based on nanometric scale germanium films, offering the additional advantage of compatibility with complementary metal‐oxide‐semiconductor (CMOS) technology in microelectronics. The vast repository of van der Waals (vdW) materials supporting polaritons offers numerous possibilities to tailor electromagnetic waves at the nanoscale. The development of twistoptics—the modulation of the optical properties by twisting stacks of vdW materials—enables directional propagation of phonon polaritons (PhPs) along a single spatial direction, known as canalization. Here we demonstrate a complementary type of directional propagation of polaritons by reporting the visualization of unidirectional ray polaritons (URPs). They arise naturally in twisted hyperbolic stacks with very different thicknesses of their constituents, demonstrated for homostructures of α -MoO3 and heterostructures of α -MoO3 and β -Ga2O3. Importantly, their ray-like propagation, characterized by large momenta and constant phase, is tunable by both the twist angle and the illumination frequency. Apart from their fundamental importance, our findings introduce twisted asymmetric stacks as efficient platforms for nanoscale directional polariton propagation, opening the door for applications in nanoimaging, (bio)-sensing, or polaritonic thermal management. The directional propagation of phonon polaritons has been demonstrated in various twisted van der Waals materials. Structured light refers to the light field tailored by various degrees of freedom including intensity, phase, and polarization states in both spatial and temporal domains, which may greatly vitalize the technologies in both optics, such as the next‐generation optical communication as well as subwavelength imaging and the materials science in both fabrication and characterization. The structured characteristics of the structure light need materials also with structured optical properties that can generate or manipulate structured light in a straightforward way, which can be well satisfied by liquid crystals, a soft mater that can self‐assemble into tunable ordered structures through external stimuli. This review summarizes the research progress of the liquid crystal‐based devices used in structured light generations and modulations, including the well‐established techniques in the market, like the spatial light modulator, q‐plate and the liquid crystal integrated optical metasurfaces. Especially, light‐matter interactions are discussed from the topological view of both the structured light and the liquid crystal structures. Such a perfect matching in topology makes the liquid crystal a promising star together with structured light in future optic and photonic technologies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
