Objectives: To evaluate changes in corneal topography and aberrometry in patients with acquired blepharoptosis after levator resection surgery. This prospective, interventional study evaluated 30 eyelids of 19 patients who underwent levator resection surgery for acquired blepharoptosis with fair and good levator function (LF). Patients underwent corneal topography before and 3 months after surgery. Results: Eleven patients had bilateral, and 8 patients had unilateral surgery. There were significant decreases in steep keratometry (K2) (preoperative: 46.21±5.02, postoperative: 44.58±2.11, P=0.046) and corneal astigmatism (preoperative: 2.98±0.61, postoperative: 1.59±1.50, P=0.034). There were no statistically significant differences between the preoperative and postoperative values of flat keratometry (K1) (P=0.585), mean keratometry (Kmean) (P=0.122), axis of corneal astigmatism (P=0.548), central corneal thickness (P=0.350), anterior chamber depth (P=0.747) and anterior chamber volume (P=0.679). The root mean square (RMS)-higher order aberrations (HOA) (P<0.001), RMS-Coma (Z₃¹) (P<0.001), and RMS-Trefoil (Z₃³) (P=0.005) decreased significantly. Preoperative and postoperative values of the seconder astigmatism (P=0.345), RMS-spherical aberration (Z₄⁰) (P=0.255), and RMS-Quadrafoil (Z₄⁴) values were found similar. Conclusions: Levator resection for acquired blepharoptosis can improve the topography and aberrometry measurements of the cornea 3 months after surgery. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Fourier ptychographic microscopy (FPM) has recently emerged as an important non-invasive imaging technique which is capable of simultaneously achieving high resolution, wide field of view, and quantitative phase imaging. However, FPM still faces challenges in the image reconstruction due to factors such as noise, optical aberration, and phase wrapping. In this work, we propose a semi-supervised Fourier ptychographic transformer network (SFPT) for improved image reconstruction, which employs a two-stage training approach to enhance the image quality. First, self-supervised learning guided by low-resolution amplitudes and Zernike modes is utilized to recover pupil function. Second, a supervised learning framework with augmented training datasets is applied to further refine reconstruction quality. Moreover, the unwrapped phase is recovered by adjusting the phase distribution range in the augmented training datasets. The effectiveness of the proposed method is validated by using both the simulation and experimental data. Optical aberrations hinder fluorescence microscopy of thick samples, reducing image signal, contrast, and resolution. Here we introduce a deep learning-based strategy for aberration compensation, improving image quality without slowing image acquisition, applying additional dose, or introducing more optics. Our method (i) introduces synthetic aberrations to images acquired on the shallow side of image stacks, making them resemble those acquired deeper into the volume and (ii) trains neural networks to reverse the effect of these aberrations. We use simulations and experiments to show that applying the trained 'de-aberration' networks outperforms alternative methods, providing restoration on par with adaptive optics techniques; and subsequently apply the networks to diverse datasets captured with confocal, light-sheet, multi-photon, and super-resolution microscopy. In all cases, the improved quality of the restored data facilitates qualitative image inspection and improves downstream image quantitation, including orientational analysis of blood vessels in mouse tissue and improved membrane and nuclear segmentation in C. elegans embryos. Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko (hereafter 67P) was the primary target of ESA's Rosetta mission. Hyperspectral images acquired by the Mapping channel of the Visible and InfraRed Thermal Imaging Spectrometer aboard Rosetta can be used to derive physical and compositional surface properties by detailed spectrophotometric analyses. This calls for a precise spatial co-registration between measurements and geometry information. In this work, we improve the wavelength-dependent co-registration and also the spatial consistency of the radiometric calibration. This is accomplished by applying a feature-based image matching method comparing measured 67P nucleus images from the entire mission to corresponding photometric simulations. The derived geometric distortions suggest previously unaccounted optical aberrations of the instrument, in conjunction with non-systematic spacecraft pointing and perspective errors, and discrepancies between the true nucleus shape at data acquisition time and the used digital shape model. The solution state of macromolecules in concentrated solutions impacts fields ranging from cell biology, to colloid chemistry and engineering of protein pharmaceuticals. Dependent on the interplay between repulsive and weakly attractive forces, proteins may exhibit oligomerization, aggregation, crystallization, liquid‐liquid phase separation, or the formation of multiprotein complexes. The particle size‐distribution is a key characteristic, but difficult to determine when interparticle distances are on the order of their size and macromolecular motion is coupled through hydrodynamic interactions. Here we extend sedimentation velocity analytical ultracentrifugation to measure macromolecular size distributions under these conditions: We apply results from statistical fluid mechanics for the concentration‐dependence of hindered settling and diffusion, embedded in a mean‐field approximation that can resolve coupled sedimentation and diffusion processes of different sized species given experimental sedimentation data. This is combined with a description of transient optical aberrations from lensing in the refractive index gradients associated with sedimentation boundaries (Wiener skewing). We demonstrate this approach in the application to protein solutions with macromolecular volume fractions up to ≈10 %, for example, resolving monomers and dimers of albumin at 140 mg/ml. In the current study, we address the phase retrieval of one-dimensional phase objects from near-field diffraction patterns using the multiple-plane Gerchberg–Saxton algorithm, which is still widely used for phase retrieval. The algorithm was implemented in a low-cost digital signal processor capable of fast Fourier transform using Q15 arithmetic, which is used by the previously mentioned algorithm. We demonstrate similarity between one-dimensional phase objects, i.e., vectors cut out of a phase map of the tertiary spherical aberration retrieved by the multiple-plane Gerchberg–Saxton algorithm, and these vectors are measured with a non-contact profiler. The tertiary spherical aberration was induced by a phase plate fabricated using grayscale lithography. After subtracting the vectors retrieved by the algorithm from those measured with the profiler, the root mean square error decreased, while a corresponding increase in the Strehl ratio was observed. A single vector of size 64 pixels was retrieved in about 2 min. The results suggest that digital signal processors that are capable of one-dimensional FFT and fixed-point arithmetic in Q15 format can successfully retrieve the phase of one-dimensional objects, and they can be used for applications that do not require real-time operation, i.e., analyzing the quality of cylindrical micro-optics. This research addresses the frequently overlooked wavefront errors and chromatic aberrations in optical coatings. It identifies intrinsic phase shifts within the coating system as the primary cause of these aberrations, rather than errors in surface form accuracy. This study investigates the impact of group delay ( G D ) on wavefront errors in optical coatings. The results reveal that G D contributes significantly to wavefront errors in two cases: when coatings exhibit thickness non-uniformity and when they operate over a wide range of incident angles. At a single incident angle, wavefront errors are only induced when both G D and thickness non-uniformity exist. In the case of a wide range of incident angles, even in the absence of thickness non-uniformity, G D still introduces wavefront errors. Objective visual quality evaluation using optical human eye models with actual eye aberration characteristics provides an important reference for clinical vision diagnosis and treatment. To ensure accurate evaluation, it is typically necessary to precisely introduce eye aberrations into the eye model by adjusting the model's surface shape. However, the detailed relationship between eye aberrations and surface shapes is unclear, causing challenges in aberration introduction. In this paper, a method that enables the accurate introduction of target aberrations into an eye model for objective visual quality evaluation is proposed. The eye aberrations generated by the model's surface are analyzed based on optical nodal aberration theory. The aberration calculation formulas are proposed and proved by a design example. Using the proposed method, the objective visual quality evaluation is conducted for the patients who underwent refractive surgery. The clinically measured postoperative eye aberrations are accurately introduced into the eye model with an error of less than 1.0 × 10−4 μm. The objective visual evaluation results are consistent with the statistical results of clinical contrast sensitivity tests. Widefield quantum diamond microscopy is a powerful technique for imaging magnetic fields with high sensitivity and spatial resolution. However, current methods to approach the ultimate spatial resolution (< 500 nm) are impractical for routine use as they require time-consuming fabrication or transfer techniques to precisely interface the diamond sensor with the sample to be imaged. To address this challenge, we have designed a co-axial sensor holder that enables simple, repeatable sensor–sample interfacing while being compatible with high numerical aperture (NA) optics. With our new design we demonstrate low standoffs < 500 nm with a millimeter sized sensor. We also explore the relationship between spatial resolution and NA spanning from 0.13 to 1.3. The spatial resolution shows good agreement with the optical diffraction limit at low NA but deviates at high NA, which is shown to be due to optical aberrations. Future improvements to our design are discussed, which should enable magnetic imaging with < 500 nm resolution in an accessible, easy-to-use instrument. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to describe the refractive outcomes and finer aspects of visual acuity such as contrast, aberrations, and quality of vision after keratoplasty for keratoconus. Design: This was a longitudinal clinical study of 50 eyes of 50 patients undergoing optical penetrating keratoplasty (OPK) or deep anterior lamellar keratoplasty (DALK). Materials and Methods: Visual acuity, slit-lamp evaluation, corneal topography, fundus evaluation, intraocular pressure measurement, contrast, and aberrometry were performed preoperatively and postoperatively at 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. The Visual Function Questionnaire-25 criteria were used to determine the quality of life. Results: Contrast sensitivity and visual acuity had significantly improved at each assessment postoperatively. There was a statistically significant improvement in the postoperative 1-year subjective visual score and maximum keratometry in both groups. In the OPK group, all aberration values showed significant improvements in the anterior and total corneal surfaces. The DALK group showed significant improvements in spherical aberration, root mean square (RMS) total, and RMS higher-order aberrations in the anterior corneal surface. The total corneal surface showed a significant improvement only in spherical aberration and RMS total values. Conclusion: From our study we conclude, that there was a statistically significant improvement in preoperative versus postoperative 1-year logMAR visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, subjective visual score, maximum keratometry, spherical aberration, and total aberrations in both OPK and DALK. OPK patients also show a statistically significant improvement in vertical coma, RMS higher-order aberration, and trefoil as compared to DALK. The selection of the surgical procedure depends on the surgeon’s preference, the patient profile, cone size, and pachymetry.

Angle‐based wavefront sensing has a rich historical background in measuring optical aberrations. The Shack–Hartmann wavefront sensor is widely employed in adaptive optics systems due to its high optical efficiency and high robustness. However, simultaneously achieving high sensitivity and large dynamic range is still challenging, limiting the performance of diagnosing fast‐changing turbulence. To overcome this limitation, angle‐based neuromorphic wave normal sensing, which serves as a differentiable framework developed on the asynchronous event modality is proposed. Herein, it is illustrated that the emerging computational neuromorphic imaging paradigm enables a direct perception of a high‐dimensional wave normal from the highly efficient temporal diversity measurement. To the best of available knowledge, the proposed scheme is the first to successfully surpass the spot‐overlapping issue caused by the curvature constraint in classical angle‐based wavefront sensing setups under challenging dynamic scenarios. Individuals with Down syndrome are known to have a greater prevalence of ocular conditions such as strabismus, nystagmus, elevated refractive error, poor accommodative function, elevated higher‐order optical aberrations and corneal abnormalities. Related to these conditions, individuals with Down syndrome commonly have reduced best‐corrected visual acuity at both far and near viewing distances across their lifespan. This review summarises the various optical sources of visual acuity reduction in this population and describes clinical trials that have evaluated alternative spectacle prescribing strategies to minimise these optical deficits. Although refractive corrections may still have limitations in their ability to normalise visual acuity for individuals with Down syndrome, the current literature provides evidence for eye care practitioners to consider in their prescribing practices for this population to maximise visual acuity. These considerations include accounting for the presence of elevated higher‐order aberrations when determining refractive corrections and considering bifocal lens prescriptions, even for young children with Down syndrome. Research on figure-ground perception has consistently found that red images are more likely to be perceived as figure/nearer, yet the mechanisms behind this are not completely clear. The primary theories have pointed to optical chromatic aberrations or cortical mechanisms, such as the antagonistic interactions of the magno-/parvocellular (M/P) systems. Our study explored this color-biased figure-ground perception by examining the duration for which a region was perceived as figure under both binocular and monocular conditions, using all combinations of red, blue, green, and gray. In Experiment 1, we used figure-ground ambiguous Maltese crosses, composed of left- and right-tilting sectors of equal area. In Experiment 2, the crosses were figure-ground biased with size and orientation cues. Here, small sectors of cardinal orientations, likely perceived as figure, were contrasted with larger, obliquely oriented sectors, likely perceived as ground. Under monocular conditions, the results aligned with chromatic aberration predictions: red advanced and blue receded, regardless of size and orientation. However, under binocular conditions, the advancing effect of red continued, but the receding effect of blue was generally not observed. Notably, blue, along with red and green, was more frequently perceived as figure compared to gray. The results under binocular viewing are in line with the expectations of the antagonistic M/P system interactions theory, likely due to the collective input from both eyes, facilitating the anticipated effects. Our findings suggest that color-biased figure-ground perception may arise from the synergistic effect of antagonistic M/P system interactions and other optical and cortical mechanisms, together compensating for chromatic aberrations. The development of high-resolution and large field of view remote-sensing cameras is inextricably linked to the application of free-form mirrors. The free-form mirror offers higher design of freedom and is more effective at correcting aberrations in optical systems. The surface shape error of a free-form mirror directly affects the imaging quality of remote-sensing cameras. Consequently, a high-precision free-form mirror detection method is of paramount importance. For the convex free-form surface mirror with a large aperture, a hybrid refractive and diffractive testing method combining computer-generated holography (CGH) and spherical mirrors for high-precision null test is proposed in this paper. When comparing the effect of error and the detection sensitivity of different designs, the results showed that the influence of the system error is reduced by about 42% and the sensitivity is increased by more than 2.6 times. Miniature camera modules are widely used in mobile electronic devices such as mobile phones, personal digital assistants or tablet computers. The introduction of freeform surface in imaging systems provides numerous opportunities for enhanced performance, compactness and lightweight packaging. In this paper, we proposed a wide-angle, low-distortion and large-aperture optical system with freeform lens. A 110°full field of view, 1/1.8″ sensor size, 1.8 F number, 6.35 mm total track length (TTL) wide-angle high-resolution miniature camera lens was developed. The prototype exhibits a novel solution for wide-angle, ultra-short TTL lens in the application such as mobile phone cameras, wearable imaging systems and endoscopic systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The distribution of diffuse spot energy can be used to sensitively evaluate the aberrations and defects of optical systems. Therefore, the objective and quantitative measurement of diffuse spot parameters is an important means to control the detection quality of space debris detection systems. At present, the existing optical system dispersion measurement method can only judge whether the energy distribution meets the index. However, these methods ca not provide an objective quantitative basis to guide the installation process. To solve this problem, a mathematical simulation model of 3D multi-phase sub-pixel PSF distribution is proposed. According to the relation between the CCD target plane and the theoretical image plane (focal plane, defocus, and deflection), the diffuse spot distribution of the optical system is simulated with different phase combinations. Then, Pearson Correlation Coefficient (PCC) is used to evaluate the matching similarity of the diffuse spot image. The simulation results show that when the PCC is greater than 0.96, the distribution of the two diffuse spots can be identified as matching. This also confirms the accuracy of the proposed PSF model. Then, the focusing deviation of the system being tested can be analyzed according to the phase size of the diffuse spot simulation image. This method can quickly and accurately guide the focal surface installation and testing of the system. Therefore, the purpose of improving the detection accuracy of space debris is achieved. Biologically inspired artificial vision research has led to innovative robotic vision systems with low optical aberration, wide field of view, and compact form factor. However, challenges persist in object detection and recognition against complex backgrounds and varied lighting. Inspired by the feline eye, which features a vertically elongated pupil and tapetum lucidum, this study introduces an artificial vision system designed for superior object detection and recognition in a monocular framework. Using a slit-like elliptical aperture and a patterned metal reflector beneath a hemispherical silicon photodiode array, the system reduces excessive light and enhances photosensitivity. This design achieves clear focus under bright light and enhanced sensitivity in dim conditions. Theoretical and experimental analyses demonstrate the system's ability to filter redundant information and detect camouflaged objects in diverse lighting, representing a substantial advancement in monocular camera technology and the potential of biomimicry in optical innovations. Modeling the behavior of a prototype cantilevered X‐ray adaptive mirror (held from one end) demonstrates its potential for use on high‐performance X‐ray beamlines. Similar adaptive mirrors are used on X‐ray beamlines to compensate optical aberrations, control wavefronts and tune mirror focal distances at will. Controlled by 1D arrays of piezoceramic actuators, these glancing‐incidence mirrors can provide nanometre‐scale surface shape adjustment capabilities. However, significant engineering challenges remain for mounting them with low distortion and low environmental sensitivity. Finite‐element analysis is used to predict the micron‐scale full actuation surface shape from each channel and then linear modeling is applied to investigate the mirrors' ability to reach target profiles. Using either uniform or arbitrary spatial weighting, actuator voltages are optimized using a Moore–Penrose matrix inverse, or pseudoinverse, revealing a spatial dependence on the shape fitting with increasing fidelity farther from the mount. The characteristics of subvisible particles (SbVPs) are critical quality attributes of injectable and ophthalmic solutions in pharmaceutical manufacturing. However, current compendial SbVP testing methods, namely the light obstruction method and the microscopic particle count method, are destructive and wasteful of target samples. In this study, we present the development of a non-destructive SbVP analyzer aiming to analyze SbVPs directly in drug product (DP) containers while keeping the samples intact. Custom sample housings are developed and incorporated into the analyzer to reduce optical aberrations introduced by the curvature of typical pharmaceutical DP sample containers. The analyzer integrates a light-sheet microscope structure and models the side scattering event from a particle with Mie scattering theory with refractive indices as prior information. Equivalent spherical particle size under assigned refractive index values is estimated, and the particle concentration is determined based on the number of scattering events and the volume sampled by the light sheet. The resulting analyzer's capability and performance to non-destructively analyze SbVPs in DP containers were evaluated using a series of polystyrene bead suspensions in ISO 2R and 6R vials. Our results and analysis show the particle analyzer is capable of directly detecting SbVPs from intact DP containers, sorting SbVPs into commonly used size bins (e.g. ≥ 2 µm, ≥ 5 µm, ≥ 10 µm, and ≥ 25 µm), and reliably quantifying SbVPs in the concentration range of 4.6e2 to 5.0e5 particle/mL with a margin of ± 15 % error based on a 90 % confidence interval. Purpose: To evaluate the intrasession repeatability of wavefront aberrations obtained by a combined adaptive optics visual simulator and Hartman-Shack aberrometer in pseudophakic eyes with and without previous corneal refractive surgery. Methods: Three consecutive measurements were performed in one eye of each individual. Total ocular aberrations were recorded up to the 5th Zernike order for a 4.5-mm pupil. Repeatability was assessed by calculating the within-subject standard deviation (Sw), the repeatability limit (R), and the intraclass correlation coefficient (ICC). Vector analysis was performed to assess astigmatism variability between scans. Results: The study enrolled 32 normal individuals and 24 individuals with a history of refractive surgery. In normal and eyes that had previous refractive surgery, respectively, the Sw values were 0.155 and 0.176 diopters (D) for sphere and 0.184 and 0.265 D for cylinder. The Sw values for all 3rd order terms ranged from 0.037 to 0.047 µm in normal eyes and 0.044 to 0.063 µm in eyes that had previous refractive surgery. The Sw for primary spherical aberration was 0.020 µm in normal eyes and 0.026 µm in eyes that had previous refractive surgery. ICC values for measurements of astigmatism yielded larger variability (ICC = 0.751 and 0.879). However, both groups demonstrated excellent repeatability (ICC > 0.9) for root mean square higher order aberrations (RMS-HOA) and total RMS values. Conclusions: In pseudophakic eyes, the adaptive optics Hartmann-Shack device demonstrated acceptable repeatability for measurement of sphere and 3rd and 4th order HOAs with higher variability for astigmatism measurements, especially in eyes with a prior history of corneal refractive surgery. Purpose: To compare the postoperative outcomes following implantation of KERATACx ring segments (Imperial Medical Technologies Europe GmbH) in patients having eccentric keratoconus with three different topographic patterns. Methods: This retrospective cohort study was conducted at Maadi Eye Subspeciality Center, Cairo, Egypt. The study included patients with keratoconus who had implantation of KERATACx ring segments. Three groups were segregated based on topographic keratoconus patterns using the Sirius CSO Topographer (CSO Italia): type I ectasia where the cone coincides with the corneal flat axis, type II ectasia in which the cone coincides with neither the steep nor the flat axis and lies between the two axes, and type II ectasia for cones coinciding with the corneal steep axis. The visual and topographic outcomes were compared preoperatively and postoperatively for the three enrolled groups. Results: This study enrolled 92 eyes of 92 patients and had a mean ± standard deviation follow-up of 16.9 ± 9.2 months. The patients' medical records revealed that night vision complaints and halos around the light were experienced the most by the type III ectasia group (31.25%). For the type III ectasia group, four topographic indices and one visual parameter did not show statistically significant differences between the preoperative and postoperative data (inferior-superior difference at 2- and 4-mm diameter, coma aberration, higher order aberrations, and uncorrected distance visual acuity), contrary to the type I and II ectasia groups, which showed significant improvements in all evaluated parameters. Purpose: To compare the clinical and aberrometric outcomes obtained with a new diffractive pentafocal intraocular lens (IOL) and a diffractive trifocal IOL. Methods: Patients bilaterally implanted with the pentafocal Intensity SeeLens IOL (Hanita Lenses) (n = 30) and the trifocal FineVision POD F IOL (PhysIOL) (n = 30) during cataract surgery were studied after 1 month for refraction, visual acuity, defocus curve, contrast sensitivity, Hartmann-Shack aberration, and double-pass aberration. The Quality of Vision (QoV) questionnaire was used to evaluate visual comfort. Results: Distance and near visual acuities were similar with the two IOLs, but distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity was better with the Intensity IOLs (0.03 ± 0.04 vs 0.11 ± 0.04 logMAR in the FineVision eyes, P <.01). The difference between objective and subjective refraction was more myopic for the Intensity IOL (−1.15 vs −0.29 diopters [D]). The defocus curve was flatter with the Intensity IOL. Contrast sensitivity was similar in both IOLs. Hartmann-Shack aberration and double-pass aberration were similar, but the modulation transfer function cut-off value was worse with the Intensity IOL: 11.6 ± 2.7 vs 15.3 ± 4.9 (P <.01). QoV scores were better with the Intensity IOL, in particular for glare, halos, and starburst. Conclusions: In this comparative series, the pentafocal Intensity IOL provided better intermediate vision and better defocus curve than the FineVision IOL, with comparable distance and near vision. The optical disturbances as reported by the patients were higher with the FineVision IOL. Additional studies will better define the aberration profile obtained with the pentafocal IOL. In current biomedical and environmental detection, multi-modal optical imaging technology is playing an increasingly important role. By utilizing information from dimensions such as spectra and polarization, it reflects the detailed characteristics and material properties of the targets. However, as detection system performance becomes more complex, issues such as aberrations introduced by multilayered lenses, signal attenuation, decreased polarization sensitivity, and latency can no longer be ignored. These factors directly affect the assessment of image details, influencing subsequent analyses. In this paper, we propose a method for designing and optimizing spectrum-splitting filters that considers the wavefront aberration and transmittance of the multi-modal optical imaging system. The method of optimizing coating phases to minimize scalar phase aberrations while maximizing system transmission leads to substantially improved imaging performance. Simulation and experimental results demonstrate that the method can improve the imaging performance. We previously proposed that the optical centroid efficiency (OCE) might be a preferred figure-of-merit to the enclosed energy of a rectangular pixel (EOD) for an instrument subject to unpredictable environmental jitter and alignment conditions. Here we follow the same symbols for the corresponding quantities, particularly the width of the pixel as being equal to 2d. Here we analyze the performance of the OCE vs. the EOD for the three Seidel primary aberrations of an optical component: spherical, coma, and astigmatism, plus defocus. We show that the OCE has an approximate U-shape when graphed against the EOD, for the aberrations ranging from 0 to 1.25λ. We conclude that for pixels larger than 2d = 3λF/#, a small pixel will feature better performance when expecting jitter, misalignment, and other environmental and unpredictable conditions. When evaluating the performance of low-aberration instruments in dynamic and unpredictable environments, the choice of the lager pixel 2d = 7λF/# might be advantageous. (1) Background: Defining the optimum center for laser refractive corrections is difficult, with many of the available approaches having pros and cons. Decentered ablations result in undesirable side effects like halos, glare, monocular diplopia, and a reduction in visual acuity; (2) Methods: The ideal centration in refractive corrections should fulfil three requirements: covering a scotopic pupil; respecting the visual axis; and minimizing tissue removal. Protecting qubits from accidental measurements is essential for controlled quantum operations, especially during state-destroying measurements or resets on adjacent qubits, in protocols like quantum error correction. Current methods to preserve atomic qubits against such disturbances waste coherence time, extra qubits, and introduce additional errors. We demonstrate the feasibility of in-situ state-reset and state-measurement of trapped ions, achieving >99.9% fidelity in preserving an 'asset' ion-qubit while a neighboring 'process' qubit is reset, and >99.6% preservation fidelity while applying a detection beam for 11 μs on the same neighbor at a distance of 6 μm. This is achieved through precise wavefront control of addressing optical beams and using a single ion as both a quantum sensor for optical aberrations and an intensity probe with >50 dB dynamic range. Our demonstrations advance quantum processors, enhancing speed and capabilities for tasks like quantum simulations of dissipation and measurement-driven phases, and implementing error correction. Wide-angle metalenses in the longwave infrared have shown great advantages over the traditional refractive doublets or triplets, due to light weight, CMOS compatibility, and low cost. However, previous endeavors have been plagued by challenges including a narrow waveband, large F-number, distortion, and spherical aberration. To address these problems, this study introduces two dispersive metasurfaces, placed near the front focal plane and upon the rear plane of a plano-convex lens, to correct optical aberrations. Utilizing this methodology, we propose and experimentally demonstrate an aberration-corrected hybrid metalens for thermal imaging in the 8–12 μm waveband, featuring an FOV of 24°, F-number of 1.2, and diameter of 12.2 mm. The developed hybrid metalens rigorously evaluated, exhibits Modulation Transfer Function (MTF) values exceeding 0.2 at 20 Lp/mm across the full FOV, and features an average transmission of 48.7 %, a relative focusing efficiencies of up to 42.1 %, polarization insensitivity and broadband imaging capacity. A fractional perfect optical vortex (FPOV) represents a class of structured light characterized by phase singularities carrying fractional orbital angular momentum (OAM). It manifests a notched annular intensity distribution, and notably, the size of this distribution remains independent of the topological charge. Conventional methods for generating FPOVs involve a series of cascaded bulk components, leading to optical aberrations due to alignment errors and impeding their integration into highly integrated devices. In this work, an experimental demonstration is presented of the broadband generation of FPOVs in the visible spectrum utilizing a monolithic plasmonic metasurface with phase‐only modulation. The metasurface allows for flexible control of various parameters of the FPOVs, including their topological charge, beam radius, ellipticity factor, orientation, and the number of opening gaps. Furthermore, as a proof‐of‐concept, an FPOV pair is utilized to encode a double‐digit hexadecimal number, showcasing the potential of a metasurface array for optical information encryption. High-definition pyramidal aberrometers show high repeatability in normal and mild keratoconus eyes and moderate repeatability in advanced cases. These findings are significant for ocular wavefront-guided treatments. Purpose: To evaluate the intrasubject repeatability of pyramidal aberrometer measurements in a sample of keratoconus and normal eyes. Setting: American University of Beirut Medical Center, Beirut, Lebanon. Design: Prospective comparative repeatability analysis. Methods: Study population: Keratoconus and normal eyes from adult patients. Observation procedures: Each eye was evaluated with 3 consecutive acquisitions using a pyramidal aberrometer. Main outcome measures: The repeatability of different ocular higher-order aberrations and lower-order aberrations (HOAs and LOAs, respectively), and Zernike coefficients down to the fifth order, was evaluated. Repeatability was assessed by within-subject SDs (Sw), repeatability limits (r), and intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs), among other parameters. Results: 72 keratoconus patients (72 eyes) and 76 normal patients (76 eyes) were included. In normal and keratoconus eyes, the ICC of total LOAs and HOAs, as well as each of the Zernike coefficients, was >0.9. The Sw for keratoconus eyes with mean maximal keratometry (Kmax) <50 diopters (D) was 0.1345 for total LOAs, 0.0619 for total HOAs, 0.0292 for horizontal coma, 0.0561 for vertical coma, and 0.0221 for spherical aberration as compared with 0.2696, 0.1486, 0.0972, 0.1497, and 0.0757 for keratoconus eyes with Kmax ≥50 D. Similar trend of better repeatability for grade 1 keratoconus and HOAs <2 D as compared with grades 2 and 3 keratoconus and eyes with HOAs >2 D were also noted. Conclusions: Ocular aberrometer measurements generated by high definition pyramidal aberrometers have high repeatability in both normal and mild keratoconus eyes and moderate repeatability, yet still clinically acceptable, in advanced keratoconus. The paper proposes an X-ray optical scheme of a lithograph with a transmissive dynamic mask and a synchrotron radiation source. The image of a dynamic mask in the form of holes of small diameter is transferred with a decrease to a plate with a resist using a Schwarzschild projection lens. The formation of a topological pattern will occur due to the coordinated operation of the system for scanning a plate with a resist and a microelectromechanical system of a transmissive type. Objectives with a reduction of 10 and 20 times for obtaining 10–20 nm images of 200 nm holes of the dynamic mask are considered. The scheme of illumination of the mask is calculated, which provides uniform illumination on a field of 10 × 10 mm2. Earth-based gravitational waves interferometric detectors are shot-noise limited in the high-frequency region of their sensitivity band. While enhancing the laser input power is the natural solution to improve on the shot noise limit, higher power also increases the optical aberration budget due to the laser absorption in the highly reflective coatings of mirrors, resulting in a drop of the sensitivity of the detector. Advanced Virgo exploits Hartmann Wavefront Sensors (HWSs) to locally measure the absorption-induced optical aberrations by monitoring the optical path length change in the core optics. Despite the very high sensitivity of Hartmann sensors, temperature fluctuations can cause a spurious curvature term to appear in the reconstructed wavefront due to the thermal expansion of the Hartmann plate, that could affect the accuracy of the aberration monitoring. We present the implementation and validation of a control loop to stabilize the Advanced Virgo HWS temperature at the order of Δ T ⩽ 0.01 K, keeping the spurious curvature within the detector's requirements on wavefront sensing accuracy. This paper presents the latest technology of displays that have recently been expanding from Rigid to a variety of form factors that can be modified. In a flexible display, different types of films are laminated to ensure panel reliability and to control stress distribution. However, the mechanism for how the characteristics of commercialized films affect the panel has not been properly identified, and it is not easy to adjust the physical properties to find key factors. So we formed a film with various characteristics using UV curing process and found key properties that can affect flexible OLED panel through process change. We were able to confirm the results of the experiment by analyzing and supplementing simulations based on physics. The cornea is the most powerful refractive element of the eye and plays a fundamental role in the quality of vision. Imperfection of corneas shape leads to the focusing errors formation, known as optical aberrations, which are responsible for visual performance deterioration. Understanding and assessing wavefront errors in IOL selection and calculation is great importance to achieve maximum optical outcome in the postoperative period. The article presents literature data of the effect of higher-order aberrations on the vision quality in unoperated eyes, changes of the wavefront in the eyes after cornea surgical interventions, the effect of various types of IOLs (spherical, aspherical, multifocal and EDOF) on the total error of the eye wavefront, recommendations at their choice with different severity levels of optical aberrations, as well as promising areas of research on this issue.

Adaptive optics (AO) systems correct optical phase aberrations of the incoming light generated by the atmosphere. To do so simultaneous estimators of the atmospheric turbulence parameters are required. For the family of wide-field AO (WFAO) systems, this information must be stratified in altitude. Among these vectorized estimations, wind profiling in altitude is needed for the reduction of temporal errors in AO loops or for the estimation of turbulence coherence time. This paper proposes a turbulence wind profiler called image processing based peak tracking algorithm (ipta). ipta is an image-processing based approach that automatically and reliably estimates wind velocity for several turbulent layers along the line of sight. The estimation of each wind layer is achieved by tracking peaks produced in cross-correlation maps from pairs of wavefront sensors (WFSs) slopes using the technique known as SLODAR (slope detection and ranging). Results for simulated and on-sky WFS data sets demonstrate that ipta outperforms one of the state of the art wind profiler methods [the profiler covariance parametrization of wind velocity (CAW)] in terms of accuracy and speed. Results also show that, in terms of execution time, our method scales better when the number of WFS lenslets is increased. Objective: To investigate the correlation between higher-order aberrations (HOA) after small incision lenticule extraction (SMILE) and the severity of myopia and astigmatism, along with the relevant factors. These findings will provide valuable insights for decreasing the occurrence of HOA after SMILE and enhancing visual quality. Methods: A total of 75 patients (150 eyes) with myopia and astigmatism who underwent SMILE were categorized into four groups based on the severity of myopia and astigmatism: Myopia Group 1 (Group M1, spherical diopter ranged from -1.00 D to -4.00 D), Myopia Group 2 (Group M2, spherical diopter ranged from -4.10 D to -10.00 D), Astigmatism Group 1 (Group A1, cylindrical diopter ranged from 0 D to -1.00 D), and Astigmatism Group 2 (Group A2, cylindrical diopter ranged from -1.10 D to -3.00 D). A comprehensive assessment was performed to examine the association between HOA and various relevant factors, including a detailed analysis of the subgroups. Results: Group M1 had significantly lower levels of total eye coma aberration (CA), corneal total HOA (tHOA), internal tHOA, and vertical CA ( Z 3 - 1 ) after SMILE than Group M2 (P < 0.05). Similarly, Group A1 had significantly lower levels of total eye tHOA, CA, trefoil aberration (TA), corneal tHOA, TA, and vertical TA ( Z 3 - 3 ) after SMILE than Group A2 (P < 0.05). Pearson correlation analysis indicated a statistically significant positive relationship between the severity of myopia/astigmatism and most HOA (P < 0.05). Subgroup evaluations demonstrated a notable increase in postoperative HOA associated with myopia and astigmatism in Groups M2 and A2 compared with the control group. Lenticule thickness, postoperative central corneal thickness (CCT), postoperative uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), and postoperative corneal Km and Cyl were strongly correlated with most HOA. Age, eyes, and postoperative intraocular pressure (IOP) were only associated with specific HOA. Conclusion: HOA positively correlated with the severity of myopia and astigmatism after SMILE. However, this relationship was not linear. HOA after SMILE was influenced by various factors, and additional specialized investigations are required to establish its clinical importance. Background: Previously, there has been some work in the field of optical imaging on phase compensation by employing Legendre polynomials as an expansion of the phase function, and this seems to be an appealing unstudied area in the field of ultrasound imaging. Purpose: The paper is devoted to solving one of the problems of enhancing the authenticity of diagnostics data obtained in ultrasound visualization systems and presents a novel approach to aberration correction, which ensures a reliable eliminating of phase distortions. The novelty of the proposed approach consists in the use of the decomposition of the wave front by Legendre polynomials to approximate aberrations of the phase front of ultrasonic waves propagating through distorting layers. Methods: The phase aberrations are corrected using a single sector probe that captures echoes in synthetic aperture mode. The proposed method approximates the changes in the wave front by means of the Legendre polynomials. The performance was investigated by placing a 13‐mm‐wide ultrasonic probe with 64 elements operating at 2 MHz on the surface of a commercial quality control phantom ATS Model 539 through a distorting layer. The following metrics were measured: peak value, root mean square (RMS), full width at half maximum (FWHM), contrast‐to‐noise ratio (CNR). During the experiments, three different aberrators were used interchangeably as distorting layers, two of which were made of photopolymer resin with RMS values of 39 and 97 ns and a speed of sound close to that of a human temporal bone tissue, and the third was an ex vivo human temporal bone with the RMS value of 44 ns. To test the correction, three regions inside the phantom were examined. Two‐sided nonparametric Wilcoxon rank‐sum test was used for assessing the statistical significance. The significance level for this study was set at α ≤ 0.05. To counteract the problem of multiple comparisons, the p‐values were adjusted by the Holm–Bonferroni correction method. Results: The statistically significant results have demonstrated the possibility of increasing peak intensity value up to 3.08 times, reducing the RMS width and FWHM of the intensity angular distribution down to 60% and 82%, respectively, and increasing CNR up to 2.12 times by using the proposed phase distortion correction method, compared with the case without correction. The results show that the method can be used as an effective aberration correction technique for all tested regions inside the phantom and distorting layers. Its usage allowed correcting up to 97% of the aberrations caused by the ex vivo temporal bone model. Conclusion: The results show that the usage of the proposed method for aberration correction can successfully increase the intensity and reduce the angular width of the ultrasound wave scattered by the point targets inside the phantoms. The method works with different distorting layers and is capable of correcting phase aberrations in multiple sections of the sonogram. The limitation of the proposed method consists in the fact that it requires the use of aperture synthesis and access to raw radiofrequency data, which restricts its application in common scanners. The Space High-cadence Observing Telescope (SHOT) is proposed to conduct a wide-field survey in one of the frequency bands between 1 and 3 THz with an aperture of 0.8 m. It will provide complete terahertz and far-infrared photometry with low-resolution spectroscopy throughout the sky, promoting the study of fast radio bursts, the formation and evolution of stars, and other scientific goals. The telescope will adopt a superconducting kinetic inductance detector to achieve a wide survey of terahertz imaging. This work designs the optical system of SHOT to obtain a large FOV of up to 1.5 deg and match the detector with the size of 60 mm × 60 mm and pixel pitch of 0.8 mm. The primary optical system adopts a Ritchey–Chrétien design. By adding a corrector lens to the optical system and optimization, the aberrations mainly caused by the optical elements in the detector system are reduced. The influence of each component assigned to different terahertz materials is analyzed. The results show that TPX is more suitable than the other two materials. The performance of the optimized optical system is close to its diffraction limit. It will have the characteristics of high image quality and compact layout. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this paper, we present a laser triangulation sensor to measure the distance between the sensor and an object without contact using a diffraction slit rather than a traditional lens. We show that by replacing the lens with a slit, we can exploit the resulting diffraction pattern to have finer and yet simpler image analysis, yielding better estimation of the distance to the object. To test our hypothesis, we build a precision position table and a laser triangulation sensor, generate large data sets to test different estimation algorithms on various materials, and compare data acquisition using a traditional lens versus using a slit. The spatial phase distortion caused by turbulent atmosphere, target speckle, or optical system aberration causes decoherence of heterodyne signals. The decoherence effect is the key problem that imposes restrictions on the application of laser heterodyne techniques. We propose an approach for spatial phase distortion correction based on a genetic algorithm by establishing a one-to-one correspondence between combination of spatial phase compensation amounts and heterodyne efficiency of the system. The spatial phase distortion compensation problem is converted into a combinatorial optimization problem. The experiment results show that the method achieves excellent compensation performance for the spatial phase distortion, significantly contributing to the applications of heterodyne techniques. Optical metalenses offer a compact approach for the development of nanoscale optical devices with various imaging functionalities. Realizing high‐quality images using metalenses with large numerical aperture (NA) requires eliminating unwanted optical aberrations. Existing strategies have largely focused only on correcting chromatic aberrations, and a metalens capable of simultaneously correcting chromatic and spherical aberrations has not yet been developed. Here, this issue is addresed by realizing an aplanatic phase profile for a red–green–blue (RGB) achromatic metalens, thereby demonstrating an RGB‐achromatic aplanatic metalens. This device consists of crystalline silicon nanostructures and it enables RGB‐achromatic aplanatic focusing with an NA of 0.635. The focal length of metalens remains unchanged at the three RGB wavelengths, whereas the associated focal spots are significantly smaller than those of an RGB‐achromatic metalens with spherical aberrations. An enhanced RGB imaging resolution is demonstrated, offering exciting opportunities to power up various imaging and display applications using flat metalenses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study compares the capabilities of using 3D acoustic models of the human head, constructed using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computed tomography (CT) data, to simulate ultrasound beam focusing when passing through skull bones and to compensate for aberrations caused by them. A CT and MRI dataset from one patient was considered. The MRI data were used to reconstruct segments of the human head (skin, skull, and brain) that were homogeneous in their internal structure. The most realistic CT model took into account the internal inhomogeneities of the skull bones and soft tissues. Field simulations and compensation for aberrations were performed using the Rayleigh integral and pseudospectral method for solving the wave equation in an inhomogeneous medium, implemented in the k-Wave software package. The transducer was considered to be a fully populated 256-element phased array with a frequency of 1 MHz and radius of curvature and an aperture of 200 mm. It was shown that when aberrations were compensated using an inhomogeneous CT model and a homogeneous MRI model, the pressure amplitude at the focus and focusing efficiency were different by less than 10%. Thus, a homogeneous MRI model can be used for preoperative assessment of the feasibility of transcranial ultrasound therapy. A plane-symmetric optical system with a two-dimensional field light source, such as a soft X-ray and vacuum ultraviolet optical system, is widely used for synchrotron radiation source devices, microscopes and so on. Therefore, this paper studied third-order intrinsic aberration modification with second-order accuracy transfer of pupil coordinates and extrinsic aberration of these kinds of optical systems. First, we discuss the extrinsic aberration calculation method and derive the corresponding aberration expressions; in addition, we apply optical geometric relations and the polynomial fitting method to obtain a second-order accuracy transfer relationship expression of the pupil coordinates between adjacent optical surfaces and derived the modification calculation expressions of the intrinsic aberration caused by the above factor. Finally, the third-order intrinsic aberration modification with second-order accuracy transfer of pupil coordinates and extrinsic aberration expressions derived in this paper are applied to calculate ray spot diagrams of two soft X-ray and vacuum ultraviolet optical systems with meridional and sagittal field angle light sources, and these results are compared with those obtained from the ray-tracing software Shadow; this showed that the calculation accuracy of the aberration expressions is sufficient. Purpose: To study the correlation of corneal topography, corneal biomechanical properties, and ocular aberrations with the magnitude of refractive error in myopic eyes. Methods: All myopic patients attending the clinic for refractive surgery were recruited. Data recorded included visual acuity, axial length (AL), central corneal thickness (CCT), manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE), topography (Pentacam - Oculus), corneal biomechanical factors [ocular response analyzer (ORA)], and optical aberrations (iTrace). They were further categorized into group 1 (suitable for femto-LASIK) and group 2 (unsuitable for femto-LASIK). Results: Sixty eyes (30 myopes) of mean age 22.78 ± 2.71 years were enrolled. A negative correlation of refractive error was noted with AL (ρ = -0.9; P < 0.001), total aberrations (ρ = 0.53; P < 0.001), and lower-order aberrations (LOA) (ρ = 0.54; P < 0.001). A strongly positive correlation was noted between CCT and corneal hysteresis (CH) (ρ = 0.63; P < 0.001), CCT and CRF (ρ = 0.56; P < 0.001), CH and corneal resistance factor (CRF) (ρ = 0.83; P < 0.001), and Goldmann equivalent intraocular pressure (IOPg) and corneal compensated intraocular pressure (IOPcc) (ρ = 0.78; P < 0.001). An increase in higher-order aberrations (HOAs) as well as lower-order aberrations (LOAs) was noted with increasing sim-K [HOA (r = 0.73, P = 0.001); LOA (r = 0.601, P = 0.014)] and increasing CRF [HOA (r = 0.5, P = 0.006); LOA (r = 0.732, P = 0.001)] in group 2. The amount of refractive error, axial length, central corneal thickness, and sim-K were significantly different in the two groups. Conclusion: Increasing degree of myopia is associated with an increase in axial length, total aberrations, and lower-order aberrations. Corneal biomechanical parameters have a strong correlation with each other. Lower corneal biomechanics are noted in high myopes as they have weaker and thinner corneas. Corneal biomechanics and ocular aberrations do not differ significantly between cases suitable for femto-LASIK and cases unsuitable for femto-LASIK. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study presents a numerical simulation-based investigation of a MEMS (micro-electromechanical systems)technology-based deformable mirror employing a piezoelectric film for fundus examination in adaptive optics. Compared to the classical equal-area electrode arrangement model, we optimize the electrode array for higher-order aberrations. The optimized model centralizes electrodes around the mirror center, which realizes low-voltage driving with high-accuracy correction. The optimized models exhibited commendable correction abilities, achieving a unidirectional displacement of 5.74 μm with a driven voltage of 15 V. The voltage–displacement relationship demonstrated high linearity at 0.99. Furthermore, the deformable mirror's influence matrix was computed, aligning with the Zernike standard surface shape of the order 1–3. To quantify aberration correction capabilities, fitting residuals for both models were calculated. The results indicate an average removal of 96.8% of aberrations to the human eye. Fourier ptychographic microscopy, as a computational imaging method, can reconstruct high-resolution images but suffers optical aberration, which affects its imaging quality. For this reason, this paper proposes a network model for simulating the forward imaging process in the Tensorflow framework using samples and coherent transfer functions as the input. The proposed model improves the introduced Wirtinger flow algorithm, retains the central idea, simplifies the calculation process, and optimizes the update through back propagation. In addition, Zernike polynomials are used to accurately estimate aberration. The simulation and experimental results show that this method can effectively improve the accuracy of aberration correction, maintain good correction performance under complex scenes, and reduce the influence of optical aberration on imaging quality. This study proposes a parabolic off-axis reflective optical system design method to reduce the wave aberration of the optical system of a large aperture single star simulator and improve the optical system's imaging quality. Firstly, we determined the design indexes of the optical system of the large aperture single star simulator by analyzing the technical indexes of the star sensitizer and the development status of the single star simulator; secondly, the initial structural parameters of the optical system were calculated based on the theory of primary aberration; then, we carried out the design optimization of the optical system, the image quality evaluation, and the tolerance analysis using Zemax software; finally, the study tested the wave aberration of the optical system by using the four-dimensional interferometer and the standard mirror together. The simulation results of the optical system are as follows: in the entire field of view, the aberration of the optical system is far less than 0.002%, the modulation transfer function (MTF) reaches the diffraction limit, and the maximum wave aberration is 0.0324 λ. The experimental results are as follows: the maximum wave aberration of the optical system is 0.0337 λ, which is less than 1/25 λ, and it meets the requirements of the index. The simulation and experimental results show that the optical system of the large aperture single star simulator designed by this method has good imaging quality and a simple system structure.
