The relation between charge order, its quantum fluctuations and optical phonon modes in cuprate superconductors remains an unsolved problem. The exploration of these excitations is however complicated by the presence of twinned domains. Here, we use uniaxial strain in combination with ultra-high-resolution Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) at the oxygen K- and copper L3-edges to study the excitations stemming from the charge ordering wave vector in La1.875Sr0.125CuO4. By detwinning stripe ordering, we demonstrate that the optical phonon anomalies do not show any stripe anisotropy. The low-energy charge excitations also retain an in-plane four-fold symmetry. As such, we find that both phonon and charge excitations are decoupled entirely from the strength of static charge ordering. The almost isotropic character of charge excitations remains a possible source for the strange metal properties found in the normal state of cuprate superconductors., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

Spectacular quantum phenomena such as superconductivity often emerge in flat-band systems where Coulomb interactions overpower electron kinetics. Engineering strategies for flat-band physics is therefore of great importance. Here, using high-energy grazing-incidence x-ray diffraction, we demonstrate how in-situ temperature annealing of the infinite-layer nickelate PrNiO$_2$ induces a giant superlattice structure. The annealing effect has a maximum well above room temperature. By covering a large scattering volume, we show a rare period-six in-plane (bi-axial) symmetry and a period-four symmetry in the out-of-plane direction. This giant unit-cell superstructure likely stems from ordering of diffusive oxygen. The stability of this superlattice structure suggests a connection to an energetically favorable electronic state of matter. Superconducting microwave metamaterials offer enormous potential for quantum optics and information science, enabling the development of advanced quantum technologies for sensing and amplification. In the context of circuit quantum electrodynamics, such metamaterials can be implemented as coupled cavity arrays (CCAs). In the continuous effort to miniaturize quantum devices for increasing scalability, minimizing the footprint of CCAs while preserving low disorder becomes paramount. In this work, we present a compact CCA architecture leveraging superconducting NbN thin films presenting high kinetic inductance, which enables high-impedance CCA ($\sim1.5$ k$\Omega$), while reducing the resonator footprint. We demonstrate its versatility and scalability by engineering one-dimensional CCAs with up to 100 resonators and exhibiting multiple bandgaps. Additionally, we quantitatively investigate disorder in the CCAs using symmetry-protected topological SSH modes, from which we extract a resonator frequency scattering of $0.22^{+0.04}_{-0.03}\%$. Our platform opens up exciting new prospects for analog quantum simulations of many-body physics with ultrastrongly coupled emitters.

Semiconductor quantum dots (QDs) in planar germanium (Ge) heterostructures have emerged as frontrunners for future hole-based quantum processors. Notably, the large spin-orbit interaction of holes offers rapid, coherent electrical control of spin states, which can be further beneficial for interfacing hole spins to microwave photons in superconducting circuits via coherent charge-photon coupling. Here, we present strong coupling between a hole charge qubit, defined in a double quantum dot (DQD) in a planar Ge, and microwave photons in a high-impedance ($Z_\mathrm{r} = 1.3 ~ \mathrm{k}\Omega$) superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) array resonator. Our investigation reveals vacuum-Rabi splittings with coupling strengths up to $g_{0}/2\pi = 260 ~ \mathrm{MHz}$, and a cooperativity of $C \sim 100$, dependent on DQD tuning, confirming the strong charge-photon coupling regime within planar Ge. Furthermore, utilizing the frequency tunability of our resonator, we explore the quenched energy splitting associated with strongly-correlated Wigner molecule (WM) states that emerge in Ge QDs. The observed enhanced coherence of the WM excited state signals the presence of distinct symmetries within related spin functions, serving as a precursor to the strong coupling between photons and spin-charge hybrid qubits in planar Ge. Niobium nitride (NbN) is a particularly promising material for quantum technology applications, as entails the degree of reproducibility necessary for large-scale of superconducting circuits. We demonstrate that resonators based on NbN thin films present a one-photon internal quality factor above 10$^5$ maintaining a high impedance (larger than 2k$\Omega$), with a footprint of approximately 50x100 $\mu$m$^2$ and a self-Kerr nonlinearity of few tenths of Hz. These quality factors, mostly limited by losses induced by the coupling to two-level systems, have been maintained for kinetic inductances ranging from tenths to hundreds of pH/square. We also demonstrate minimal variations in the performance of the resonators during multiple cooldowns over more than nine months. Our work proves the versatility of niobium nitride high-kinetic inductance resonators, opening perspectives towards the fabrication of compact, high-impedance and high-quality multimode circuits, with sizable interactions., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Removal or cancellation of noise has wide-spread applications for imaging and acoustics. In every-day-life applications, denoising may even include generative aspects, which are unfaithful to the ground truth. For scientific use, however, denoising must reproduce the ground truth accurately. Here, we show how data can be denoised via a deep convolutional neural network such that weak signals appear with quantitative accuracy. In particular, we study X-ray diffraction on crystalline materials. We demonstrate that weak signals stemming from charge ordering, insignificant in the noisy data, become visible and accurate in the denoised data. This success is enabled by supervised training of a deep neural network with pairs of measured low- and high-noise data. We demonstrate that using artificial noise does not yield such quantitatively accurate results. We demonstrate a straightforward approach to integrating a magnetic field into a low-temperature scanning tunneling microscope (STM) by adhering an NdFeB permanent magnet to a magnetizable sample plate. To render our magnet concept compatible with high-temperature sample cleaning procedures, we make the irreversible demagnetization of the magnet a central part of our preparation cycle. After sacrificing the magnet by heating it above its Curie temperature, we use a transfer tool to attach a new magnet in-situ prior to transferring the sample into the STM. We characterize the magnetic field created by the magnet using the Abrikosov vortex lattice of superconducting NbSe2. Excellent agreement between the distance dependent magnetic fields from experiments and simulations allows us to predict the magnitude and orientation of magnetic flux at any location with respect to the magnet and the sample plate. Quasiparticle interference imaging (QPI) offers insight into the band structure of quantum materials from the Fourier transform of local density of states (LDOS) maps. Their acquisition with a scanning tunneling microscope is traditionally tedious due to the large number of required measurements that may take several days to complete. The recent demonstration of sparse sampling for QPI imaging showed how the effective measurement time could be fundamentally reduced by only sampling a small and random subset of the total LDOS. However, the amount of required sub-sampling to faithfully recover the QPI image remained a recurring question. Here we introduce an adaptive sparse sampling (ASS) approach in which we gradually accumulate sparsely sampled LDOS measurements until a desired quality level is achieved via compressive sensing recovery. The iteratively measured random subset of the LDOS can be interleaved with regular topographic images that are used for image registry and drift correction. These reference topographies also allow to resume interrupted measurements to further improve the QPI quality. Our ASS approach is a convenient extension to quasiparticle interference imaging that should remove further hesitation in the implementation of sparse sampling mapping schemes., Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures

The basic \emph{entanglement swapping protocol} allows to project two qubits, which have never interacted, onto a maximally entangled state. For deterministic swapping, the key ingredient is the maximal entanglement that was initially contained in two pairs of qubits and the capacity of projecting onto a Bell basis. Thus the basic and deterministic entanglement swapping scheme involves three maximal level of entanglement. In this work we propose probabilistic entanglement swapping processes performed with different amounts of initial entanglement. Besides that we suggest a non Bell measuring-basis, to introduce a third entanglement level in the process. Additionally, we propose the \emph{unambiguous state extraction scheme} as the local mechanism for probabilistically achieving the EPR projection. The combination of these three elements allows us to design four strategies for performing probabilistic entanglement swapping. Surprisingly, we find a twofold entanglement threshold effect related to the concurrence of the measuring-basis. Specifically, the maximal probability of accomplishing a EPR projection becomes a constant for concurrences higher than or equal to threshold entanglement value. Spectroscopic mapping refers to the massive recording of spectra whilst varying an additional degree of freedom, such as: magnetic field, location, temperature, or charge carrier concentration. As this involves two serial tasks, spectroscopic mapping can become excruciatingly slow. We demonstrate exponentially faster mapping through our combination of sparse sampling and parallel spectroscopy. We exemplify our concept using quasiparticle interference imaging of Au(111) and Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 (Bi2212), as two well-known model systems. Our method is accessible, straightforward to implement with existing scanning tunneling microscopes, and can be easily extended to enhance gate or field-mapping spectroscopy. In view of a possible four orders of magnitude speed advantage, it is setting the stage to fundamentally promote the discovery of novel quantum materials.

Scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) is a notoriously slow technique; Data-recording is serial which renders complex measurement tasks, such as quasiparticle interference (QPI) mapping, impractical. However, QPI would provide insight into band-structure details of quantum materials which can be inaccessible to angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. Here we use compressed sensing (CS) to fundamentally speed-up QPI mapping. We reliably recover the QPI information from a fraction of the usual local density of state measurements. The requirement of CS is naturally fulfilled for QPI, since CS relies on sparsity in a vector domain, here given by few nonzero coefficients in Fourier space. We exemplify CS on a simulated Cu(111) surface using random sampling of constant and varying probability density. We further simplify the motion of the STM tip through an open traveling salesman's problem for greater efficiency. We expect that the implications of our CS approach will be transformative for the exploration of 2D quantum materials.

A Bell test is a randomized trial that compares experimental observations against the philosophical worldview of local realism. A Bell test requires spatially distributed entanglement, fast and high-efficiency detection and unpredictable measurement settings. Although technology can satisfy the first two of these requirements, the use of physical devices to choose settings in a Bell test involves making assumptions about the physics that one aims to test. Bell himself noted this weakness in using physical setting choices and argued that human `free will' could be used rigorously to ensure unpredictability in Bell tests. Here we report a set of local-realism tests using human choices, which avoids assumptions about predictability in physics. We recruited about 100,000 human participants to play an online video game that incentivizes fast, sustained input of unpredictable selections and illustrates Bell-test methodology. The participants generated 97,347,490 binary choices, which were directed via a scalable web platform to 12 laboratories on five continents, where 13 experiments tested local realism using photons, single atoms, atomic ensembles, and superconducting devices. Over a 12-hour period on 30 November 2016, participants worldwide provided a sustained data flow of over 1,000 bits per second to the experiments, which used different human-generated data to choose each measurement setting. The observed correlations strongly contradict local realism and other realistic positions in bipartite and tripartite scenarios. The speed of quantum gates and measurements is a decisive factor for the overall fidelity of quantum protocols when performed on physical qubits with finite coherence time. Reducing the time required to distinguish qubit states with high fidelity is therefore a critical goal in quantum information science. The state-of-the-art readout of superconducting qubits is based on the dispersive interaction with a readout resonator. Here, we bring this technique to its current limit and demonstrate how the careful design of system parameters leads to fast and high-fidelity measurements without affecting qubit coherence. We achieve this result by increasing the dispersive interaction strength, by choosing an optimal linewidth of the readout resonator, by employing a Purcell filter, and by utilizing phase-sensitive parametric amplification. In our experiment, we measure 98.25% readout fidelity in only 48 ns, when minimizing read-out time, and 99.2% in 88 ns, when maximizing the fidelity, limited predominantly by the qubit lifetime of 7.6 us.
