Objectives: This study aimed to compare treatment efficacy and cephalometric outcomes between extraction and non-extraction MEAW therapies in non-growing open-bite patients. Materials and methods: 22 Multiloop Edgewise Archwire MEAW patients (11 males, 11 females) and 15 bicuspid extraction patients (3 males, 12 females) were selected according to a strict inclusion criterion. Comprehensive data collection related to age, sex, Cervical Vertebral Maturation CVM staging, and severity of the Anterior Open Bite AOB (1 = 0–1 mm; 2 = 1–2 mm; 3 = > 2.1 mm) was performed independently and in duplicate by 2 examiners. Each included patient’s pre and post-treatment lateral cephalograms were traced and compared. The primary outcomes assessed were related to the efficacy of treatment: treatment duration and time needed to achieve a positive overbite. The secondary outcomes assessed were related to the post-treatment changes in cephalometric measurements between the groups. Descriptive statistics, Mann-Whitney U test, unpaired student’s t-test, and Chi-squared were used for data analysis. Results: The mean change in open bite closure was 3.07 ± 2.07 mm in the MEAW group and 3.03 ± 2.28 mm in the extraction group (P > 0.05). MEAW therapy was 31% faster (118 weeks) than extraction therapy (171 weeks, P = 0.004). MEAW appliance showed a significantly shorter duration for open bite closure (71.82 ± 29.57 weeks) compared to the extraction group (127.25 ± 51.97 weeks, P = 0.002). A greater decrease in the U1-SN was seen in the extraction group (-8.70 ± 6.49°), compared to the MEAW group (-2.56 ± 7.36°, P = 0.047). The IMPA angle showed a greater decrease in the extraction group (-8.30 ± 8.85°) compared to the MEAW group (-0.90 ± 6.50°, P = 0.032). The (L6-MP perp) increased in the extraction group by (1.98 ± 3.43 mm), while decreased in the MEAW group (-0.43 ± 1.38 mm, P = 0.023). Conclusion: In anterior open bite cases with bicuspid extraction, achieving a positive overbite typically involves retroclining and uprighting the upper and lower incisors (drawbridge effect). In contrast, the MEAW appliance focuses on uprighting the entire dentition and intruding the posterior teeth, often leading to shorter treatment durations. Clinical relevance: The MEAW appliance’s biomechanical advantage in uprighting posterior teeth in open bite cases may shorten treatment duration for correcting open bite malocclusion. This study aims to assess the presence and progression of TMD in adult patients undergoing orthognathic surgery to correct dentoskeletal open bite and evaluate whether these changes can be attributed to the intervention. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 44 adult patients (14 males and 30 females) aged 18 to 43 years. Articular assessments were performed to evaluate temporomandibular joint (TMJ) health and functionality before (T0) and after (T1) combined orthodontic-surgical treatment. TMJ health was assessed by maximum mouth opening, joint noises, parafunctions (bruxism or clenching), joint locking, TMJ pain, masticatory muscle pain, and headaches. Statistical analyses used McNemar's Exact Test and paired T-tests. The study shows a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in symptoms, except for locking, with the most substantial decrease in headaches (p = 0.0001). Overall, articular symptoms markedly decreased post-surgery, with sustained joint functionality. Restoring physiological occlusion in patients with anterior open bite is crucial for maintaining the stomatognathic system's balance. Background: The opinion on whether a patient with an anterior open bite should be treated surgically or not is controversial. These patients generally suffer from associated discomfort due to their occlusal instability and musculoskeletal pain. Clinical Presentation: A 60-year-old woman visited the clinic with dental mobility of her upper central incisors as her chief complaint. She had a severe anterior open bite, with a history of continuous grinding and multiple dental restorations in poor condition. Additionally, she suffered neck pain with movement restrictions. Conclusion: Dentists can evaluate and treat patients with an anterior open bite using this integrative model (physical therapy/dentistry) as a possible alternative as part of the treatment for anterior open bite patients. An iatrogenic open bite after orthognathic surgery is an uncommon malocclusion, with only one documented case reported in the literature. However, the open bite in this case report was not a true open bite, as it resulted from the interferences between the maxillary second molars and mandibular retromolar bones. This case report aims to present the management of a true iatrogenic open bite with posterior teeth in centric occlusion, occurring after mandibular setback surgery. The anterior open bite accompanied a severe class II malocclusion and increased lower anterior facial height. The patient was treated with fixed lingual appliances and mini-screws to distalize the entire maxillary arch and close the open bite. After treatment, a positive overbite and dental class I relationship was achieved. The treatment outcomes were stable at the 2-year follow-up. Lingual appliances combined with mini-screws may offer effective non-surgical management of iatrogenic open bite after orthognathic surgery. Clinical and Surgical Implications: Iatrogenic open bites can develop from various causes that include surgical options such as orthognathic surgery or in patients treated with occlusal splint therapy. Objective To investigate the clinical efficacy of disc repositioning surgery combined with orthodontic treatment in patients with temporomandibular disorder and facial asymmetry. Methods One patient who underwent disc repositioning surgery combined with orthodontic treatment for temporomandibular joint disorder and facial asymmetry was reported. Preoperatively, the patient had a skewed shape of the opening, mild pressure pain in the right preauricular region with left mandibular deviation, and a mismatch between the width of the upper and lower dental arches. In the arthrosurgery department, bilateral temporomandibular disc replacement and anchorage were performed through a transauricular incision, and an auxiliary splint was worn to stabilize the jaw position for 6 months. In the orthopedic department, maxillary skeletal expansion was used in combination with the multiloop edgewise archwire technique to reconstruct the occlusion after 16 months of orthodontic treatment. Results The deviation was corrected by wearing an occlusal splint for six months after joint repositioning and anchoring; moreover, the pain symptoms disappeared, and the cone beam CT examination showed that the bilateral temporomandibular joint space was uniformly enlarged, the lower alveolar ridge midline deviated to the right, the posterior regions of the teeth were bilaterally inverted, and the anterior region and the posterior region of the left side were open. The orthodontic treatment matched the width of the upper and lower dental arches and established the cuspal molar neutrality relationship and the normal overjet coverage of the anterior teeth; additionally, the mandibular position was not obviously skewed. A review of the results of the related literature shows that abnormal occlusal relationships, such as mismatched arch width and skewed occlusal plane, can cause adaptive mandibular deviation, which can lead to the occurrence of TMD. Temporomandibular joint disc anchorage with splint treatment can effectively improve maxillofacial deformity in young TMD patients. After the establishment of a stable, physiologically functional disc-condylar relationship, orthodontic treatment is required to remove the interfering factors to rebuild the occlusion, and long-term postoperative review and follow-up are needed. Conclusion In patients with TMD and mandibular accommodative deviation due to occlusal anomalies, establishing a normal disc-condylar relationship and eliminating occlusal interference through disc repositioning surgery combined with orthodontic treatment can effectively improve facial shape and establish a stable jaw position.

The masticatory function of patients with skeletal anterior open bite (OPEN) is reported to be impaired compared with that of patients with normal occlusion (NORM). In this study, we compared brain blood flow (BBF) in patients with OPEN and NORM and investigated the factors related to BBF during mastication in patients with OPEN. The study included 17 individuals with NORM and 33 patients with OPEN. The following data were collected: number of occlusal contacts, jaw movement variables during mastication, and BBF measured with functional near-infrared spectroscopy during chewing. The number of occlusal contacts, maximum closing and opening speeds, closing angle, and vertical amplitude were smaller in the OPEN than in the NORM group. Interestingly, BBF increased less in the OPEN group. Correlation analysis revealed that several parameters, including number of occlusal contacts and closing angle, were correlated with changes in BBF during mastication. These results suggest that not only occlusion but also jaw movement variables and factors related to masticatory muscles contribute to the chewing-related increase in BBF. In conclusion, BBF increases less during mastication in patients with OPEN than in those with NORM. In addition, the higher increase in BBF is correlated with jaw movement. Background: We investigated treatment outcomes and post-treatment stability in 10 patients with an anterior open bite and nonsurgical orthodontics. Methods: The patients underwent maxillary molar intrusion using temporary anchorage devices (TADs) to deepen the overbite due to mandibular autorotation. Lateral cephalograms and dental cast models were obtained before treatment (T0), immediately after it (T1), and >1 year after it (T2). Skeletal and dental cephalometric changes and three-dimensional movements of the maxillary dentitions were evaluated. Results: At T0, cephalometric analysis indicated that patients had skeletal class I with tendencies for a class II jaw relationship and a skeletal open bite. During active treatment (T0 to T1), the maxillary first molar intruded by 1.6 mm, the mandibular first molar extruded by 0.3 mm, the Frankfort-mandibular plane angle decreased by 1.1°, and the overbite increased by 4.1 mm. Statistically significant changes were observed in the amount of vertical movement of the maxillary first molar, Frankfort-mandibular plane angle, and overbite. Three-dimensional (3D) dental cast analysis revealed that the maxillary first and second molars intruded, whereas the anterior teeth extruded, with the second premolar as an infection point. In addition, the maxillary molar was tipped distally by 2.9° and rotated distally by 0.91°. Statistically significant changes were observed in the amount of vertical movement of the central incisor, lateral incisor, canine and first molar, and molar angulation. From T1 to T2, no significant changes in cephalometric measurements or the 3D position of the maxillary dentition were observed. The maxillary and mandibular dentitions did not significantly change during post-treatment follow-up. Conclusions: Maxillary molar intrusion using mini-screws is an effective treatment for open bite correction, with the achieved occlusion demonstrating 3D stability at least 1 year after treatment. Background: Dystonia has been reported as an adverse effect of antipsychotic medications; however, dentists rarely detect the symptoms because of the complexity of complaints. Case Presentation: A 74‐year‐old woman presented with an open bite and jaw pain. She reported a history of depression and was being treated with medication including olanzapine. We diagnosed the patient with oromandibular dystonia. Her psychiatrist withdrew olanzapine treatment following consultation, and the open bite and jaw pain were resolved. Conclusion: Dentists should consider oromandibular dystonia when a patient taking antipsychotic medication complains of an open bite. Irreversible procedures should be avoided in these patients. The purpose of this study was to investigate the scientific evidence on the short- and long-term effects of orthodontic correction of anterior open bite (AOB) using skeletal anchorage (SA). Clinical studies on the use of SA for AOB in patients with permanent dentition, or at least 12 years of age, were searched. Short- and long-term (≥2 years) outcomes were collected. Mean differences were calculated from pooled data. Twenty-four eligible articles with a total of 362 subjects were selected for inclusion in the meta-analysis. There was a significant increase in overbite (3.88 mm, P < 0.001) and maxillary molar intrusion (−2.15 mm, P < 0.001). The mandible showed counterclockwise rotation with anterosuperior chin movement (all P < 0.001). Long term, the decrease in overbite was 19.9% and decrease in molar intrusion was 22.9%. The decrease in the mandibular projection was 14.6% for ANB (A-point–nasion–B-point angle) and 46.2% for mandibular anteroposterior position. The overall risk of bias in the included studies was rated as moderate to high, and publication bias existed for several key variables. SA for maxillary molar intrusion effectively improved dental and skeletal outcomes, but there was a long-term decrease in overbite and maxillary molar position. Background/Purpose: Newly developed temporary anchorage devices (TADs) serve a strong orthodontic anchorage to intrude molars for correction of anterior open bite (AOB). We measured cephalometric changes in skeletal open bite patients which developed subsequently to temporomandibular joint disorders with bilateral point contacts at terminal molars. Methods: We retrospectively recruited 32 patients who had been treated their TMD before orthodontic correction (overbite: −3.14 ± 1.86 mm). Partial orthodontic appliances were used to intrude posterior teeth using TADs until positive OB obtained (T1). Full fixed appliances were then used to achieve proper overjet and overbite (T2). We collected lateral cephalograms before (T0), during (T1) and after (T2) treatment, and at follow-ups (T3). Objectives: Anterior open bite can be treated non-surgically via molar intrusion using temporary skeletal devices (TAD). Clear aligner therapy (CAT) is recognized as a viable therapeutic modality for non-extraction treatment of adults with mild open bite. This study aimed to compare the treatment effect and mechanisms of open bite closure between patients treated with braces and TADs double arch intrusion and those treated with CAT. Treatment success at T3 was based on 1- positive overbite on ceph; 2- Change in the vertical dimension 3- post treatment POSI score equal to zero. Material and Methods: The TAD group includes 18 consecutively treated patients from the main author. The CAT group consisted of 16 selected patients from three different orthodontists. The observation time points were as follows: pretreatment (T1), end of molar intrusion and positive overbite achieved (T2), end of treatment (T3), at least 6-month follow-up (T4). Treatment changes were assessed by cephalometric analysis and frontal intraoral photo. Results: At the end of treatment, 100% of the patient of the TAD group and 78,6% of the CAT group had a posi score of 0. The TAD group showed a significant reduction in vertical measurements (SN-MPA: -1,55° ± 0.41, LAFH: -3,05 ± 0.51 mm, U6-PP: -1.48 ± 0.30 mm), but the CAT group did not have significant changes for these variables. Both groups had significant increases in overbite from T1 to T3 (TAD: 4,32 ± 0,5 mm; CAT: 2,33 ± 0.56 mm), and overbite remained stable at T4. The CAT group did not have a significant upper molar intrusion, but a significant extrusion of 1.22 ± 0.42 mm of the lower incisor occurred. Conclusion: The TAD group achieved bite closure by upper molar intrusion, lower molar and incisors vertical control, and mandibular plane counterclockwise rotation, resulting in an improved AP and vertical relationship. The CAT group achieved bite closure through the lower incisor extrusion without significant change in the vertical dimension. Clinical relevance: This study provides relevant information about the skeletal and dental changes of open bite treatment with TADs double arch intrusion. Atypical swallowing has a high incidence in growing subjects. Orthopedic treatment with orthodontic appliances and speech therapy are the main approaches to this problem. The aim of this prospective study was to evaluate the changes in the dental arches induced by one year of treatment with the Froggy Mouth myofunctional appliance designed to correct atypical swallowing. In total, 16 patients with atypical swallowing were instructed to use the Froggy Mouth appliance. A digital intraoral impression was taken at baseline (T0). The Froggy Mouth appliance had to be used for 15 min/day throughout the treatment period. At the end of the first year of treatment (T1), another impression was taken with the same intraoral scanner. Digital casts of the T0 and T1 impressions were obtained using software and the two casts were superimposed to record the following measurements: upper intercanine distance, upper arch diameter, upper arch width, overbite and overjet. The data were statistically analyzed (significance threshold: p < 0.05). Student's t-test was used to compare pre- and post-treatment measurements. Linear regressions were performed to assess the influence of arch width on anterior and posterior diameters. A significant increase was found for the upper arch diameters (p < 0.05), whereas no statistically significant difference was found for the incisor relationship (overjet/overbite) (p > 0.05). To date, the efficacy of this appliance has not been extensively studied. According to the present prospective study, the Froggy Mouth protocol could be a valuable method as a myofunctional therapy for atypical swallowing, but further studies are needed to confirm these preliminary results. Mandibular fractures are very common in maxillofacial trauma surgery. While previous studies have focused on possible risk factors related to post-operative complications, none have tried to identify pre-existing conditions that may increase the risk of mandibular fractures. We hypothesized, through clinical observation, that anatomical conditions involving poor dental contacts, such as malocclusions, may increase the risk of mandibular fractures. This work was subdivided into two parts. In the first part, Digital Imaging and Communications in Medicine (DICOM) data of four healthy patients characterized by different dentoskeletal occlusions (class I, class II, class III, and anterior open bite) have been used to develop four finite element models (FEMs) that accurately reproduce human bone structure. A vertical and lateral impact have been simulated at increasing speed on each model, analyzing the force distribution within the mandibular bone. Both vertical and lateral impact showed higher level of stress at the impact point and in the condylar area in models characterized by malocclusion. Specifically, the class III and the open bite models, at the same speed of impact, had higher values for a longer period, reaching critical stress levels that are correlated with mandibular fracture, while normal occlusion seems to be a protective condition. In the second part of this study, the engineering results were validated through the comparison with a sample of patients previously treated for mandibular fracture. Data from 223 mandibular fractures, due to low-energy injuries, were retrospectively collected to evaluate a possible correlation between pre-existing malocclusion and fracture patterns, considering grade of displacement, numbers of foci, and associated CFI score. Patients were classified, according to their occlusion, into Class I, Class II, Class III, and anterior open bite or poor occlusal contact (POC). Class I patients showed lower frequencies of fracture than class II, III, and open bite or POC patients. Class I was associated with displaced fractures in 16.1% of cases, class II in 47.1%, class III in 48.8% and open bite/POC in 65.2% of cases (p-value < 0.0001). In class I patients we observed a single non-displaced fracture in 51.6% of cases, compared to 12.9% of Class II, 19.5% of Class III and 22.7% of the open bite/POC group. Our analysis shows that class I appears to better dissipate forces applied on the mandible in low-energy injuries. A higher number of dental contacts showed a lower rate of multifocal and displaced fractures, mitigating the effect of direct forces onto the bone. The correlation between clinical data and virtual simulation on FEM models seems to point out that virtual simulation successfully predicts fracture patterns and risk of association with different type of occlusion. Better knowledge of biomechanics and force dissipation on the human body may lead to the development of more effective safety devices, and help select patients to plan medical, orthodontic/dental, and/or surgical intervention to prevent injuries. Objectives: To determine differences in the location of centre of resistance (Cres) between functional and hypofunctional teeth and to evaluate the relationship between the pulp cavity volume and locations of the Cres, using the finite element (FE) method. Design: Retrospective cohort study. Participants: FE models of right maxillary central incisor, derived from cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) images of 46 participants, were divided into normal function (n = 23) and hypofunction (n = 23) groups using anterior overbite and cephalometric measurements. Methods: Measurements of the tooth and pulp cavity volume were made from the CBCT. Cres levels were presented as percentages of the root length from the root's apex. All data were analysed and compared using the independent t-test (P < 0.05). The relationship between the location of Cres and volume ratios were evaluated statistically. Results: The means of the pulp cavity/tooth volume and root canal/ root volume ratio of the maxillary central incisor in the anterior open bite group were significantly greater than those in the normal group. The average location of Cres in the anterior open bite group was 0.6 mm (3.7%) apically from the normal group, measured from root apex. The difference was statistically significant (P < 0.01). There was a significant correlation between root canal/root volume ratio and locations of Cres (r = −0.780, P < 0.001). Conclusions: The Cres in the hypofunctional group was located more apical than the functional group. As the pulp cavity volume increased, the level of Cres shifted apically. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction: Amelogenesis imperfecta (AI) is a diverse collection of inherited diseases that show quantitative and qualitative defects in tooth enamel in the absence of systemic manifestations. Patients with AI often have open bite, which also requires complex care. In the final dental treatment, the focus should be on the preparation of indirect restorations, so early detection and care can be key factors for long-term success, as poor-quality enamel can be more easily attacked by caries. Case report: A 15-year-old young female patient presented to the Department of Prosthodontics of Semmelweis University in 2022 because of her worn down teeth due to amelogenesis imperfecta. The patient also had open bite. During the intraoral examination, reduced enamel was detected on all teeth, with partial enamel breakdown, exposing the dentin. Following the current professional recommendations, we planned monolithic zirconia crowns and splints as well as bridges to correct the tooth gaps on the upper and lower arches. In the first phase of the treatment, we increased the occlusal vertical dimension using a gothic arch tracer and digital face bow (Zebris for Ceramill). The impressions were taken by the 3Shape Trios 3 Pod, making it more comfortable for the patient and easier to copy accurately the increased occlusal vertical dimension from the temporary restoration to the final restoration. Due to the damaged tooth structure, for the final cementation resin modified glass ionomer was used. This study aims to assess the presence and progression of TMD in adult patients undergoing orthognathic surgery to correct dentoskeletal open bite and evaluate whether these changes can be attributed to the intervention. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 44 adult patients (14 males and 30 females) aged 18 to 43 years. Articular assessments were performed to evaluate temporomandibular joint (TMJ) health and functionality before (T0) and after (T1) combined orthodontic-surgical treatment. TMJ health was assessed by maximum mouth opening, joint noises, parafunctions (bruxism or clenching), joint locking, TMJ pain, masticatory muscle pain, and headaches. Statistical analyses used McNemar’s Exact Test and paired T-tests. The study shows a significant reduction (p < 0.05) in symptoms, except for locking, with the most substantial decrease in headaches (p = 0.0001). Overall, articular symptoms markedly decreased post-surgery, with sustained joint functionality. Restoring physiological occlusion in patients with anterior open bite is crucial for maintaining the stomatognathic system’s balance. Orthognathic surgery, when indicated, appears beneficial in alleviating articular symptoms while preserving TMJ function.

Anterior open bite malocclusion is a complex dental condition characterized by a lack of contact or overlap between the upper and lower front teeth. It can lead to difficulties with speech, chewing, and biting. Its etiology is multifactorial, involving a combination of genetic, environmental, and developmental factors. Genetic studies have identified specific genes and signaling pathways involved in jaw growth, tooth eruption, and dental occlusion that may contribute to open bite development. Understanding the genetic and epigenetic factors contributing to skeletal open bite is crucial for developing effective prevention and treatment strategies. A thorough manual search was undertaken along with searches on PubMed, Scopus, Science Direct, and Web of Science for relevant studies published before June 2022. RCTs (clinical trials) and subsequent observational studies comprised the included studies. Orthodontic treatment is the primary approach for managing open bites, often involving braces, clear aligners, or other orthodontic appliances. In addition to orthodontic interventions, adjuvant therapies such as speech therapy and/or physiotherapy may be necessary. In some cases, surgical interventions may be necessary to correct underlying skeletal issues. Advancements in technology, such as 3D printing and computer-assisted design and manufacturing, have improved treatment precision and efficiency. Genetic research using animal models, such as the Collaborative Cross mouse population, offers insights into the genetic components of open bite and potential therapeutic targets. Identifying the underlying genetic factors and understanding their mechanisms can lead to the development of more precise treatments and preventive strategies for open bite. Here, we propose to perform human research using mouse models to generate debatable results. We anticipate that a genome-wide association study (GWAS) search for significant genes and their modifiers, an epigenetics-wide association study (EWAS), RNA-seq analysis, the integration of GWAS and expression-quantitative trait loci (eQTL), and micro-, small-, and long noncoding RNA analysis in tissues associated with open bite in humans and mice will uncover novel genes and genetic factors influencing this phenotype. Background: Open bite is a common orthodontic malocclusion that can have functional and aesthetic implications. Traditional orthodontic treatments have been used to correct open bites, but the effectiveness of Invisalign, a clear aligner therapy, in open bite correction remains a topic of interest. Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on a cohort of 50 patients with open bites who underwent Invisalign treatment. Pre-treatment and post-treatment records, including cephalometric radiographs, dental models, and clinical photographs, were assessed. The open bite was defined as a negative overbite greater than 2 mm. Treatment duration, number of aligners used, and patient compliance were also recorded. Statistical analysis, including paired t-tests and subjective patient feedback, was employed to evaluate the treatment outcomes. Results: The mean pre-treatment open bite was -3.5 mm (SD = 1.2), and the mean treatment duration was 18 months (SD = 2.5). On average, patients received 24 sets of aligners (SD = 4.1) during the treatment. Post-treatment evaluation showed that the mean overbite improved to + 1.5 mm (SD = 0.8), indicating successful open bite correction. The paired t-test revealed a statistically significant difference between pre-treatment and post-treatment open bite measurements (P < 0.001). Patient satisfaction was high, with 90% of participants reporting improved aesthetics and comfort. Conclusion: Invisalign treatment demonstrates effectiveness in correcting open bites, with statistically significant improvements in overbite measurements.

The masticatory function of patients with skeletal anterior open bite (OPEN) is reported to be impaired compared with that of patients with normal occlusion (NORM). In this study, we compared brain blood flow (BBF) in patients with OPEN and NORM and investigated the factors related to BBF during mastication in patients with OPEN. The study included 17 individuals with NORM and 33 patients with OPEN. The following data were collected: number of occlusal contacts, jaw movement variables during mastication, and BBF measured with functional near-infrared spectroscopy during chewing. The number of occlusal contacts, maximum closing and opening speeds, closing angle, and vertical amplitude were smaller in the OPEN than in the NORM group. Interestingly, BBF increased less in the OPEN group. Correlation analysis revealed that several parameters, including number of occlusal contacts and closing angle, were correlated with changes in BBF during mastication. These results suggest that not only occlusion but also jaw movement variables and factors related to masticatory muscles contribute to the chewing-related increase in BBF. In conclusion, BBF increases less during mastication in patients with OPEN than in those with NORM. In addition, the higher increase in BBF is correlated with jaw movement. Together, we discovered that OPEN exhibits significant adverse effects not only on masticatory function but also on brain function.
