Sociality impacts many biological processes and can be tightly linked to an individuals fitness. To maximize the advantages of group living, many social animals prefer to associate with individuals that provide the most benefits, such as kin, familiar individuals, or those of similar phenotypes. Such social strategies are not necessarily stable over time but can vary with changing selection pressures. In particular, young individuals transitioning to independence should continuously adjust their social behavior in light of developmental changes. However, social strategies exhibited during adolescence in animals are understudied, and the factors underlying social network formation during ontogeny remain elusive. Here, we tracked associations of wild great tits (Parus major) during the transition to independence and across their first year of life. Both spatial and social factors predicted dyadic associations. During the transition to independence in spring, fledglings initially preferred to associate with siblings and peers over non-parent adults. We found no evidence for preferred associations among juveniles of similar age or fledge weight during that time but weak evidence for some potential inheritance of the parental social network. By autumn, after juveniles had reached full independence, they exhibited social strategies similar to those of adults by establishing stable social ties based on familiarity that persisted through winter into the next spring. Overall, this research demonstrates dynamic changes in social networks during ontogeny in a species with a fast life history and limited parental care, which likely reflect changes in selective pressures. It further highlights the importance of long-term social bonds based on familiarity in this species.

One apparent feature of mental time travel is the ability to recursively embed temporal perspectives across different times: humans can remember how we anticipated the future and anticipate how we will remember the past. This recursive structure of mental time travel might be formalized in terms of a 'grammar' that is reflective of but more general than linguistic notions of absolute and relative tense. Here, I provide a foundation for this grammatical framework, emphasizing a bounded (rather than unbounded) recursive function that supports mental time travel to a limited temporal depth and to actual and possible scenarios. Anticipated counterfactual thinking, for instance, entails three levels of mental time travel to a possible scenario ('in the future, I will reflect on how my past self could have taken a different future action') and is centrally implicated in complex human decision-making. This perspective calls for further research into the mechanisms, ontogeny, functions and phylogeny of recursive mental time travel, and revives the question of links with other recursive forms of thinking such as theory of mind. The Caspian kutum, Rutilus frisii, is an anadromous fish native to Iran and despite the development of its hatchery production, its larval development has been poorly described; hence describing its morphological growth pattern was the aim of this study. The Caspian kutum larval period in the early development was divided into three stages, namely eleuthero-embryo (0–5 dph), propterygio-larvae (5–13 dph), pterygio-larvae (13–20 dph) and after larval period early juvenile was initiated (> 20 dph). The eleuthero-embryo stage was characterized by the commencement of mix-feeding while the yolk-sac remains, while propterygio-larvae absorbed the yolk-sac and continued to develop feeding apparatus and fin-folds. In pterygio-larvae, the fins developed and squamation began to appear. During the eleuthero-embryo stage, allometry in the head, trunk and tail were nearly isometric, negative, and positive, respectively. In propterygio-larvae, the head and tail allometry were positive, while the trunk was still negative. By the pterygio-larval stage, the tail and trunk allometry were nearly isometric but the head was positive. After metamorphosis, the growth pattern changed as the head and trunk allometry became nearly isometric and positive, respectively, but the tail allometry remained almost isometric. Many higher cognitive tasks, such as problem-solving and deliberation are accompanied by the experience of an inner voice in our heads. In this paper, we develop the idea that our own inner speech supports these tasks. We approach the phenomenon of inner speech through a comparison with overt speech – a comparison that is suggested by a Vygotskian approach that focuses on how inner speech develops from overt speech during ontogeny. We argue for the cognitive potency of inner speech by hypothesizing that condensed inner speech may help reduce cognitive load; yet by being pragmatically expanded upon, inner speech may scaffold further cognitive accomplishments. More specifically, as we adopt a Vygotskian perspective, we begin by introducing his notion of internalization and examine in what way inner speech might be condensed. Then the question of whether inner speech is governed by the same pragmatic mechanisms that govern overt speech is posed and answered in the affirmative. We advocate the idea that inner speech aids deliberation due, to some degree, to the manner in which pragmatic principles governing overt speech are re-purposed in inner speech. Although considered a hallmark in early ontogeny, weaning from breastmilk is difficult to monitor in wild primates and weaning ages remain unknown for wild bonobos (Pan Paniscus). Here, we calculated inter‐birth intervals from demographic data and measured the isotopic offsets (Δ15N and Δ13C) between mother (n = 17) and offspring (n = 28) fecal sample pairs (n = 131, total n = 246) in the LuiKotale bonobos to assess nutritional weaning for the first time. We tested the effects of infant age, female parity, and sibling competition on Δ15N and Δ13C values. We found bonobo inter‐birth intervals ranging from 2.2 to 7.3 years (x̄ = 4.7 ± 1.3 years) at LuiKotale. The Δ15N and Δ13C values suggested nutritional weaning on average by 6.6 and 7.0 years of age respectively, considerably exceeding weaning ages reported for chimpanzees (P. troglodytes) using the same approach. Our Δ13C data suggested that the number of offspring present affected nursing, with first‐time mothers nursing more and possibly longer. The Δ15N and Δ13C values decreased with the arrival of the next sibling, suggesting sibling competition reduces milk access. Nevertheless, offspring may continue nursing 2.5–3 years after the birth of the next sibling, corresponding well with observations on low infant mortality. Background: Upper elementary grade students encounter increasingly complex texts with abundant morphologically complex words. Despite the positive effects of morphology‐based vocabulary instruction, emergent bilinguals with limited word reading skills may need additional support. Methods: This study investigated the effects of morphological analysis and morphophonemic analysis instruction on the orthographic and semantic learning of morphologically complex academic words. Fourth‐ and fifth‐grade Spanish–English bilingual students (N = 30) in the United States participated in two learning tasks. In learning task one, participants learned two sets of carefully matched derivational words under morphological and whole‐word learning conditions. In learning task two, the same participants learned two other sets of words under morphophonemic and whole‐word learning conditions. Each learning task included two learning sessions interweaved by meaning recall and spelling production assessments. Cross‐classified multilevel regression was used to assess the effects of intervention conditions, child and item predictors, as well as cross‐level interactions. Results: Findings showed no significant difference in meaning recall and spelling measures between morphological and whole‐word conditions. Students performed significantly better in the morphophonemic condition than in the whole‐word condition for both meaning and affix spelling outcomes. The effect of morphophonemic intervention over whole word condition was stronger for younger students and words of lower base frequencies. Student meaning and spelling performance was significantly predicted by their word reading skills. Conclusions: Morphophonemic analysis instruction enhances word meaning recall and spelling of complex derivative words. Introduction: Dynamic cellular and molecular adaptations in early life significantly impact health and disease. Upon birth, newborns are immediately challenged by their environment, placing urgent demands on the infant immune system. Adenosine deaminases (ADAs) are enzymatic immune modulators present in two isoforms - ADA-1 and ADA-2. Infants exhibit low ADA activity, resulting in high plasma adenosine concentrations and a consequent antiinflammatory/anti-Th1 bias. While longitudinal studies of plasma ADA have been conducted in infants in The Gambia (GAM), little is known regarding ADA trajectories in other parts of the world. Methods: Herein, we characterized plasma ADA activity in an infant cohort in Papua New Guinea (PNG; n=83) and compared to ontogeny of ADA activity in a larger cohort in GAM (n=646). Heparinized peripheral blood samples were collected at day of life (DOL) 0, DOL7, DOL30, and DOL128. Plasma ADA-1, ADA-2, and total ADA activities were measured by chromogenic assay. Results: Compared to GAM infants, PNG infants had significantly lower ADA-1 (0.9-fold), ADA-2 (0.42-fold), and total ADA (0.84-fold) activities at birth which converged by DOL30. Discussion: Overall, discovery of a distinct baseline and a consistent pattern of increasing plasma ADA activity in early life in two genetically and geographically distinct populations validates and extends previous findings on the robustness of early life immune ontogeny. Introduction: Mammalian reproductive and somatic development is regulated by steroid hormones, growth hormone (GH), and insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1). Based largely on information from humans, model organisms, and domesticated animals, testosterone (T) and the GH/IGF-1 system activate sexually differentiated development, promoting male-biased growth, often at a cost to health and survivorship. To test if augmented prenatal androgen exposure in females produces similar developmental patterns and trade-offs, we examine maternal effects in wild meerkats (Suricata suricatta), a non-model species in which adult females naturally, albeit differentially by status, express exceptionally high androgen concentrations, particularly during pregnancy. In this cooperative breeder, the early growth of daughters predicts future breeding status and reproductive success. Methods: We examine effects of normative and experimentally induced variation in maternal androgens on the ontogenetic patterns in offspring reproductive hormones (androstenedione, A4; T; estradiol, E2), IGF-1, growth from pup emergence at 1 month to puberty at 1 year, and survivorship. Specifically, we compare the male and female offspring of dominant control (DC or high-T), subordinate control (SC or lower-T), and dominant treated (DT or blocked-T) dams, the latter having experienced antiandrogen treatment in late gestation. Results: Meerkat offspring showed sex differences in absolute T and IGF-1 concentrations, developmental rates of A4 and E2 expression, and survivorship -- effects that were sometimes socially or environmentally modulated. Atypical for mammals were the early male bias in T that disappeared by puberty, the absence of sex differences in A4 and E2, and the female bias in IGF-1. Food availability was linked to steroid concentrations in females and to IGF-1, potentially growth, and survival in both sexes. Maternal treatment significantly affected rates of T, E2, and IGF-1 expression, and weight, with marginal effects on survivorship; offspring of DT dams showed peak IGF-1 concentrations and the best survivorship. Discussion: Maternal effects thus impact offspring development in meerkats, with associated trade-offs: Whereas prenatal androgens modify postnatal reproductive and somatic physiology, benefits associated with enhanced competitiveness in DC lineages may have initial costs of reduced IGF-1, delay in weight gain, and decreased survivorship. These novel data further confirm the different evolutionary and mechanistic pathways to cooperative breeding and call for greater consideration of natural endocrine variation in both sexes. Aging is often associated with changes in social, sexual, emotional and pain functioning, as well as with the increased prevalence of certain psychopathologies. However, the neurodevelopmental basis underpinning these age‐related changes remains to be determined. Considering the key roles of oxytocin (OTR) and μ‐opioid (MOPr) receptor systems in regulating social, sexual, pain, reward and emotional processing, it seems plausible that they are also implicated in age‐related behavioural alterations. Although the ontogeny of both receptors has been well characterized in rodent brains from early development till adulthood, little is known concerning the neuroadaptations occurring from middle age to old age. Therefore, we mapped the neuroadaptations in OTR and MOPr in the brains of mice at those developmental endpoints. Quantitative OTR and MOPr autoradiographic binding was carried out in the brains of male mice at 2, 6, 9, 12 and 18 months of age. A significant whole brain decline in OTR density was detected between 2 and 6 months of age, with no additional decline thereafter. Interestingly, for MOPrs, the decline in density was not detected until 9 months of age. Region‐specific age‐related decline in OTR density was concentrated in the lateral anterior olfactory nuclei (AOL) and, for MOPr, in the AOL and the nucleus accumbens for MOPr. Identifying the tipping point of these age‐related variations in both receptors may assist with our understanding of the neurobiology underlining age‐related changes in social, pain and emotional functioning/processing. The osteohistology of Andrias spp. is a pivotal analogue for large fossil non-amniotes (e.g., Temnospondyli), and the endangered status of this taxon underlines the importance of gathering information on its growth. We here present the first osteohistological study by petrographic thin sections of an ontogenetic series of humeri and femora of eight individuals of varying sizes (28.5–104 cm) and ages (2.5–32 years) of Andrias japonicus from the Hiroshima City Asa Zoological Park, Japan. In addition, two individuals of A. cf. davidianus of unknown age but of different size (62 cm and 94 cm) were studied. All samples of Andrias spp. show a primary avascular periosteal cortex made of parallel-fibred tissue around the ossification center in the petrographic thin sections. Mainly in small individuals, the fibers forming this tissue are very coarse and loosely organized. With increasing size and age, the coarse tissue is irregularly intermixed and later replaced with finer and better organized fibers. This histologic change is accompanied by a change from diffuse annuli in the inner cortex to distinct lines of arrested growth (LAGs) in the outer cortex. We interpret these changes in tissue and the appearance of distinct growth marks as indicating the onset of active reproduction. The lack of primary vascularization around the ossification center in our Andrias spp. sample is striking and contradicts other observations. Vascularity may be prone to plasticity and further studies are necessary. We hypothesize that the large osteocyte lacunae and the dense networks of canaliculi observed in our sample may have nourished the tissue instead of primary vascular canals. We measured the size of osteocyte lacunae of Andrias spp. in comparison to other Lissamphibia, and found them to be significantly larger throughout ontogeny. The periosteal cortex contains a high amount of thick Sharpey's fibers all around the midshaft cross sections. The two samples of Andrias cf. davidianus show tissue and growth mark distribution similar to that observed in A. japonicus. However, the large individual of A. cf. davidianus differed in its extremely osteosclerotic condition and the retention of a small layer of calcified cartilage in the endosteal region of the femur. It remains unclear whether these differences are related to plasticity, taxonomy, sex, exogenous factors, or attributable to a regenerated but fully regrown leg. Modern-day terrestrial amphibians pale in comparison to their monstrous ancient relatives, the Late Carboniferous and Early Permian trematopid temnospondyls. With a skeleton that clearly indicated a terrestrial mode of life and armed with an impressive set of large, recurved marginal dentition and palatal fangs for holding their prey—this group of terrestrial temnospondyls roamed North America and Central Europe as a top predator. Lack of substantial informative fossil material has previously limited our understanding of trematopid diversity and ontogeny. Fortunately, this has improved in the last few decades with the help of exceptional localities like the Early Permian locality Richards Spur. While multiple species of dissorophid temnospondyl have been described from Richards Spur, only one trematopid species has been confidently recognized -Acheloma dunni. Here, we report on the presence of a new large, relatively mature trematopid skull from this famous locality, found encased within a limestone rich block composed mostly of skeletal remains from several other taxa. With the help of neutron computed tomography (nCT), a non-invasive method of analyzing internal and external morphologies, this specimen has revealed several features consistent with the genus, Acheloma, but distinct from Acheloma cumminsi and Acehloma dunni. The identification of these new features, in addition to the characters it shares with other Acheloma species, not only constitute it as a new species of this genus, but also challenges the notion of having synonymized Acheloma dunni with Acheloma cumminsi. In this study, we also unveil new anatomical characters that are potentially independent of ontogeny and could therefore help clarify some of the phylogenetic relationships of this fascinating group of Paleozoic terrestrial predators. The ear region has a strong potential for evolutionary studies. While the petrosal bone suffers from ontogeny and allometry, the bony labyrinth provides crucial information for phylogeny. The study of the bony labyrinth itself allowed for argumentation of the early bovid species Eotragus artenensis and Eotragus clavatus being closely related, while a newly described species and genus of early Bovidae from Montréal‐du‐Gers (France), formerly attributed to Eotragus, clearly belong to another lineage. The morphology of the bony labyrinth of these oldest bovids confirms that Eotragus is a stem Bovidae, while the new Bovidae is more derived. Since the bony labyrinth is a structure that is little affected by ontogeny, allometry, and sexual dimorphism, we propose this structure and its surrounding petrosal bone as the holotype for this new species. Propylene glycol (PG) is a pharmaceutical excipient which is generally regarded as safe (GRAS), though clinical toxicity has been reported. PG toxicity has been attributed to accumulation due to saturation of the alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH)‐mediated clearance pathway. This study aims to explore the impact of the saturation of ADH‐mediated PG metabolism on its developmental clearance in adults and neonates and assess the impact of a range of doses on PG clearance saturation and toxicity. Physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PBPK) models for PG in adults and term neonates were developed using maximum velocity (Vmax) and Michaelis–Menten's constant (Km) of ADH‐mediated metabolism determined in vitro in human liver cytosol, published physicochemical, drug‐related and ADH ontogeny parameters. The models were validated and used to determine the impact of dosing regimen on PG clearance saturation and toxicity in adults and neonates. The Vmax and Km of PG in human liver cytosol were 1.57 nmol/min/mg protein and 25.1 mM, respectively. The PG PBPK model adequately described PG PK profiles in adults and neonates. The PG dosing regimens associated with saturation and toxicity were dependent on both dose amount and cumulative in standard dosing frequencies. Doses resulting in saturation were higher than those associated with clinically observed toxicity. In individuals without impaired clearance or when PG exposure is through formulations that contain excipients with possible interaction with PG, a total daily dose of 100–200 mg/kg/day in adults and 25–50 mg/kg/day in neonates is unlikely to result in toxic PG levels or PG clearance saturation. Sparisoma species (parrotfish) comprise an important functional group contributing to coral‐reef resilience. The morphological diagnostic characteristics for species identification are clearly described for adult forms but not for the early stages. Consequently, many taxonomical listings of Sparisoma larvae are restricted to the genus level. The aims of this study are to determine whether the morphological and molecular identification techniques are useful to assign the species taxonomic level to Sparisoma larvae occurring in the Gulf of Mexico and whether there is a set of diagnostic features that could be used to discriminate between species in larvae of different developmental stages. Morphological assignment of Sparisoma was performed based on morphological and meristic features for 30 larvae collected in the Gulf of Mexico from late August to mid‐September 2015. To corroborate and complement the morphological assignments, molecular identification was carried out using DNA sequences from regions of two mitochondrial genes, mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase I (mtDNA COI) and mitochondrial 16S rRNA (mtDNA 16S rRNA). COI and 16S gene trees for Sparisoma and related fish taxa were constructed using sequences available in the NCBI (National Center for Biotechnology Information) GenBank and BOLD (Barcode of Life Data) databases. Two morphotypes were identified based on morphology, but no diagnostic characteristics for species discrimination were found. Molecular identification, in contrast, successfully discriminated four early development stages of Sparisoma atomarium, three stages of Sparisoma radians, and two stages of Sparisoma chrysopterum and Sparisoma aurofrenatum, therefore demonstrating the successful and necessary application of molecular taxonomic approaches for species‐level identifications of Sparisoma larvae. A juvenile pachycephalosaur frontal from the upper Aguja Formation (Late Cretaceous: middle Campanian) of West Texas, USA is unusually thin dorsoventrally, even compared to 'flat' frontals of young individuals pertaining to other pachycephalosaur taxa. The specimen is most comparable morphologically and morphometrically to Stegoceras validum. However, it is much thinner than any 'juvenile' example of that species, and also differs in the elongate form and radial arrangement of the surficial tubercles, as well as occurrence of radial grooves along the lateral margins of the bone. Such differences are unlikely a reflection of intraspecific variation. Instead, the Aguja specimen likely represents a previously unknown juvenile semaphoront from the southern Western Interior, referred herein to Stegoceras sp. and likely extends the distribution of this widespread Campanian genus. A morphometric evaluation suggests that the holotype specimen of Texacephale langstoni , also from the Aguja Formation, is probably an adult semaphoront of Stegoceras. However, both specimens represent different ontogenetic stages with dissimilar morphologies and so their potential conspecifity remains equivocal. The new Aguja specimen described herein likely represents a 'paedomorphic' Campanian pachycephalosaur – one where the onset of doming is displaced until well into ontogeny – a heterochronic attribute Stegoceras sp. shares with S. validum and Pachycephalosaurus wyomingensis. Where an adequate ontogenetic sample is available for comparison, other pachycephalosaur taxa do not seem to exhibit a similar growth progression, and so this appears to be a significant taxonomic characteristic. That some pachycephalosaurs delayed doming of the skull roof during growth is enigmatic, but it may have been an expression of sexual dimorphism, an aid in species recognition, or a response to harsh environmental conditions. The versatility of the shark body form is suggested to be one of the key factors underlying their evolutionary success and persistence. Nevertheless, sharks exhibit a huge diversity of body forms and morphological adaptations. More subtly, it is increasingly evident that in many species, morphology varies through ontogeny. Multiple competing hypotheses exist explaining both the function of specific morphological structures and the interspecific distribution of these ontogenetic morphological shifts. However, existing studies are restricted to a small number of mostly large‐bodied species. In this study, we report allometric scaling relationships from functionally important morphological structures in the spadenose shark (Scoliodon laticaudus). We find that a mosaic of isometric and allometric growth underlies the scaling trends in this species and that cases of allometry are consistent with an ontogenetic shift in diet. Moreover, our results refute suggestions that small‐bodied sharks grow isometrically. Given the small number of existing studies of ontogenetic morphometry in sharks and the life‐history/ecological characteristics of S. laticaudus, this study is a valuable contribution to our understanding of the adaptive value of ontogenetic morphological shifts in elasmobranchs. Primates show large interindividual variability in the character and quantity of interactions between mothers and their immature offspring. Multiple studies have documented associations between maternal behavior and the occurrence or frequency of certain behaviors among offspring, but it remains unclear whether and how early maternal interactions generally affect behavioral development in offspring. We followed two wild groups of Japanese macaques on Yakushima island and investigated the relationship between maternal behavior and several types of behavior performed by 35 juvenile offspring. We further asked if the impact of maternal behavior on juvenile behavior persists regardless of the distance between mother and offspring, testing whether the influence extends beyond cases when the mother is nearby. We found that juveniles whose mothers frequently rejected them approached and played with others more often, independent of their mother's presence. Juveniles of more protective mothers were in proximity to fewer other individuals and played less, but only if their mothers were nearby. Maternal rejection appears to exert a generalized effect on offspring behavior that endures when mothers are absent. In contrast, effects of maternal protectiveness may be temporary and/or reflect direct maternal influences, such as active intervention in offspring interactions, or effects of the mother's own social relationships on offspring interactions. Our results suggest that understanding how maternal behavior affects offspring development requires paying attention to the context of juvenile behavior, including the mother's distance from her offspring. Ontogenetic sexual dimorphism is observed in different primate species, with ecological and evolutionary relationships explaining this pattern. Understanding the growth of the southern brown howler monkey elucidates not only the ecology and evolution but also contributes to conservation projects for this species. Throughout 20 years of the Centro de Pesquisas Biológicas de Indaial—Projeto Bugio, Brazil, we collected morphological data on 105 howlers of the Alouatta guariba species to identify the growth differences between ontogenetic categories and sexes and generate a growth curve to estimate the age of rescued individuals. Linear measurements were employed to obtain body length as well as the dimensions of the head and limbs. All individuals were also weighed to obtain body mass. We assessed growth rate and duration using allometric analysis based on the individuals' ages. We compared growth rate and duration among infant, juvenile, and adult howlers and between sexes. We provide growth curves for body size for both sexes using the Von Bertalanffy model. Infants have accelerated growth rate in comparison to the juveniles and adults, with no differences between sexes in establishing body length at this ontogenetic stage. Males have a prolonged development duration from the juvenile stage, reaching adulthood later than females, which explains the body length differences found in this species. Variables of head and limbs analyzed also showed differences in growth rate and duration, but not so consistently among ontogenetic stages. Mass was not a good variable to understand the growth differences of the animals, since many arrived feeble in the project and may have lost mass due to different circumstances in old age. Therefore, growth curves were obtained only for body length, allowing the estimation of the age of these animals when rescued from the wild to more effectively provide needed care in captivity. Simple Summary: A comprehensive report about the embryonic development of Cirrhinus mrigala is portrayed. Cirrhinus mrigala embryonic development is classified into 22 stages. A time-lapse imaging technique was utilized for a better understanding and display of the results. To induce spermiation and ovulation in Cirrhinus mrigala brooders, the synthetic hormone Ovaprim® (GnRH + dopamine inhibitor) was administrated as a single injection dose of 0.2 mL/kg to males and 0.4 mL/kg to females. After induction, the fish spawned, and the eggs produced were fertilized artificially and cell division commenced successfully. The characteristics of each larval developmental stage were closely observed and recorded using a time-lapse imaging technique. The fertilized eggs were spherical, demersal, and non-adhesive throughout their incubation period. The spawned eggs ranged in diameter from 2.1 mm to 2.13 mm and possessed circular yolk sacs. The gastrula stage initiated approximately 4 h after fertilization, with 25% of the yolk sphere covered by blastoderm, reaching 75% coverage at the end of the gastrula stage, approximately 6 h post fertilization. Organogenesis was marked by the formation of notochord and the visibility of rudimentary organs such as the heart, eyes, and gills, followed by tail movement, which was observed at the time of hatching. Compared to other cyprinid fishes, C. mrigala exhibited distinct features at certain stages of embryonic development. Blood circulation was observed to start at the onset of hatching. The lengths of the newly hatched larvae ranged from 2.9 to 3.2 mm, smaller than other reports on induced breeding in carps. The findings of the present study provide a detailed reference for the embryonic development of C. mrigala, which will assist its future research endeavors and large-scale seed production for sustainable aquaculture. The mechanisms responsible for the growth and development of vascular beds in intestinal villi during postnatal ontogenesis remain enigmatic. For instance, according to the current consensus, in the sprouting type of angiogenesis, there is no blood flow in the rising capillary sprout. However, it is known that biomechanical forces resulting from blood flow play a key role in these processes. Here, we present evidence for the existence of the intussusception type of angiogenesis during the postnatal development of micro-vessel patterns in the intestinal villi of rats. This process is based on the high-level flattening of blood capillaries on the flat surfaces of intestinal villi, contacts among the opposite apical plasma membrane of endothelial cells in the area of inter-endothelial contacts, or the formation of bridges composed of blood leucocytes or local microthrombi. We identified factors that, in our opinion, ensure the splitting of the capillary lumen and the formation of two parallel vessels. Predicting forest health at a regional level is challenging as forests are simultaneously attacked by multiple pathogens. Usually, the impacts of each pathogen are studied separately, however, interactions between them can affect disease dynamics. Pathogens can interact directly by competing for the same niche, but also facilitate or suppress each other via indirect effects through the host. We studied 66 native Mediterranean Pinus nigra stands located in the Pyrenees which were affected by two pathogens with different structural specificity: Dothistroma pini causing Dothistroma needle blight and Diplodia sapinea causing Diplodia shoot blight. We explored the ecology of both pathogens and whether the diseases they caused had an impact on trees and recruits. No signs of competition were found on adult trees. Diplodia shoot blight was restricted to the warmest and driest areas, while no climatic restrictions were identified for Dothistroma needle blight. Both diseases caused additive effects on crown defoliation and defoliated trees showed stagnated growth. In the regeneration layer, signs of disease suppression were found. In the warmest and driest areas, seedling mortality was mainly associated with Diplodia shoot blight, even though both pathogens were detected. Clear signs of D. pini spillover from canopy trees to recruits were found. However, seedling mortality caused by Dothistroma needle blight was only restricted to the coldest and wettest sites where D. sapinea could not survive. Large crowns in adult trees probably allow both pathogens to co‐exist and cause additive impacts. The smaller size of recruits and a higher susceptibility to environmental stress compared to adult trees probably facilitates the effects of Diplodia shoot blight which masked those caused by Dothistroma needle blight. By considering climatic constraints, host ontogeny and structural specificity, we could dissect the disease impacts of two different pathogens and successfully explain forest health at a regional scale. Multiciliated cells (MCCS) form bundles of cilia and their activities are essential for the proper development and physiology of many organ systems. Not surprisingly, defects in MCCs have profound consequences and are associated with numerous disease states. Here, we discuss the current understanding of MCC formation, with a special focus on the genetic and molecular mechanisms of MCC fate choice and differentiation. Furthermore, we cast a spotlight on the use of zebrafish to study MCC ontogeny and several recent advances made in understanding MCCs using this vertebrate model to delineate mechanisms of MCC emergence in the developing kidney. Uridine 5′‐diphospho‐glucuronosyltransferases (UGTs) demonstrate variable expression in the pediatric population. Thus, understanding of age‐dependent maturation of UGTs is critical for accurate pediatric pharmacokinetics (PK) prediction of drugs that are susceptible for glucuronidation. Ontogeny functions of major UGTs have been previously developed and reported. However, those ontogeny functions are based on in vitro data (i.e., enzyme abundance, in vitro substrate activity, and so on) and therefore, may not translate to in vivo maturation of UGTs in the clinical setting. This report describes meta‐analysis of the literature to develop and compare ontogeny functions for 8 primary UGTs (UGT1A1, UGT1A4, UGT1A6, UGT1A9, UGT2B7, UGT2B10, UGT2B15, and UGT2B17) based on published in vitro and in vivo studies. Once integrated with physiologically based pharmacokinetics modeling models, in vivo activity‐based ontogeny functions demonstrated somewhat greater prediction accuracy (mean squared error, MSE: 0.05) compared to in vitro activity (MSE: 0.104) and in vitro abundance‐based ontogeny functions (MSE: 0.129). Opossums (marsupials of the Didelphidae family) retain a generalized masticatory apparatus and tribosphenic molars, often used as models to understand the evolution of mastication in early therian mammals. Like all marsupials, their growth goes through a stage when pups complete their development while permanently attached to the mother's teats before weaning and starting feeding on their own. Yet, while the masticatory muscles of adults are known, as is the ontogeny of the cranium and mandible, the ontogenetic changes in the masticatory muscles remain unknown. Here we describe for the first time the changes in the masticatory muscles observed in lactating pups, and weaned juveniles, subadults, and adults in the White‐eared opossum, Didelphis albiventris, through dissection of 25 specimens and quantification of relative muscle masses, lines of actions and mechanical advantages whenever possible. We also assessed the scaling patterns of muscle masses and mechanical advantages through ontogeny. The main changes, as expected, were found between suckling and weaned specimens, although some changes still occurred from juveniles to adults. The adult adductor musculature is similar to the other Didelphis species already known, with a dominant m. temporalis that originates on the lateral wall of the skull, up to the sagittal and nuchal crests, and fills the zygomatic arch when inserting into the lateral and medial surfaces of the coronoid process, respectively through the pars superficialis and pars profunda. The m. masseter is also subdivided in superficial and deep bundles which originate posteriorly in the maxilla and zygomatic arch, and insert into the angular process and masseteric fossa in the mandible. The m. pterygoideus medialis originates from the palatine, the pterygoid bone and the alisphenoid, and it inserts on the angular process medially. Suckling pups showed muscles with more restricted attachments, reduced muscle lines of action, and less diversity in the fiber orientation. The absence of the postorbital constriction also resulted in a distinct morphology of the m. temporalis pars profunda, through two bundles, one anterior and one posterior, which insert more inferiorly into the mandible. These major changes can be related to the onset of mastication and to size‐related changes in growing weaned age classes. In general, all adductor muscles grew with positive allometry, and increased their fixation areas through, in part, the development of specific regions of the cranium and mandible. Their lines of action also increase and diversify along ontogeny. The concept of basic Self-disorders (SD) captures the experiential aspects associated with vulnerability to schizophrenia spectrum disorders (SSD). SD emerge prior to, and constitute the underlying structure for, the emergence of major diagnostic symptoms, including positive psychotic ones. SD are also detectable in populations with familial risk for SSD. This paper proposes a two-stage phenomenological-developmental model, exploring the early deficit in multisensory integration and their impact on the ontogeny of the Minimal Self in the first years of life. Dark pigmentation of adults resulting from cold exposure during development is ubiquitous among insects. Yet the costs associated with the developmental plasticity of melanisation have been explored only for a handful of species.We explored two hypotheses relating to colour plasticity of insects. First, if melanin pigments are costly to synthesise and require allocation of resources, increased melanisation should be negatively associated with performance traits (the cost hypothesis). Second, given the positive association between melanisation and immune responses or desiccation resistance in some species, melanisation and performance may co‐vary positively (the positive covariance hypothesis). Furthermore, given the typical differences in reproductive effort and activity between females and males, we expect these performance–melanisation relationships to differ between sexes.We assessed whether temperature‐induced melanisation of the globally invasive beetle Harmonia axyridis f. succinea (Pallas) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) was related to standard metabolic rate and flight performance while accounting for developmental temperature and family affiliation.Melanisation explained little variation in standard metabolic rate at most temperatures tested (15, 20, 25, 30 and 35°C). For flight performance and after the cold‐rearing regime, lighter coloured female beetles had increased flight speed compared with darker females, whereas the opposite was found in males. In addition, in warm‐reared beetles, darker individuals had lower mean flight speeds.The results suggest that at least some flight performance costs are associated with developmentally induced melanisation, supporting the cost hypothesis. Disparities in these relationships between males and females suggest that the drivers underlying variation in melanisation differ between sexes. Importantly, variation in melanisation was more acute for females reared in the warm regime compared with equally treated males and to cold‐reared individuals. Ontogenetic changes in area use, habitat use, and trophic interactions play an important role in the ecology, demography, and ultimately population dynamics of many species. Assumed to be driven by shifting life‐history requirements, trophic niche shifts in white sharks (Carcharodon carcharias) are well documented, but the timing of the spatial niche shift that is hypothesized to occur with the trophic niche shift remains poorly understood. To document how fine‐scale area use varies as sharks age and the timing of the ontogenetic spatial shift of this top predator, we tracked individual white sharks tagged as young‐of‐the‐year or young juveniles over multiple years. Using data from juvenile white sharks detected over multiple years in a nursery habitat with a high‐density receiver array, we found no difference in area use with age. However, using a coast‐wide receiver array including nursery and adult habitat, we found the probability of detecting a juvenile white shark in nursery habitat decreased with age, with a concurrent increasing probability of detection in adult habitat. As the conservation and management of this species relies on understanding nursery habitat use and age‐related movements, data presented here address an important knowledge gap for the understudied juvenile to subadult life stages and the ontogenetic habitat shift of this species. The Atlantic sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) is an anadromous species which is a detritivore for years in freshwater, before metamorphosing into a juvenile and feeding parasitically at sea. However, their migratory patterns and marine ecology are poorly characterized. In other fishes, chemical analysis of calcified structures has aided in understanding their life history, but sea lamprey lacks these structures. Recent work using eye lenses suggests an alternate approach. Lenses are stable protein structures that accrue layers on their outer edge as they grow. We used stable isotope ratios (δxY) of hydrogen, carbon, nitrogen, and oxygen to explore lens layers and compare lenses to muscle. Returning adults were collected in May 2021 from the Penobscot (Maine), Connecticut (Massachusetts), and Susquehanna (Maryland) rivers. Lenses were dissected into three layers (surface, middle, core) and analyzed separately to investigate changes over time. We used mixed-effects models to assess differences in isotope ratios among lens layers. Isotope ratios changed from the core to the surface layer and δ13C were suggestive of a change from terrestrial to marine sources and δ15N showed an increase in trophic level as individuals grew, as would be expected when transitioning from detrital sources to marine prey. However, the isotope ratios of the outer lens layer generally did not correspond with the muscle, perhaps indicating a different temporal interval. Understanding the activity budget of mother‐young pairs can inform how energy is allocated and its relation to the development of young. Using suction cup tag data collected off Sainte Marie, Madagascar, during the calving season, we compared the time budgets of mothers and their calves in capital‐breeding humpback whales, investigated the changes with age, and assessed mother‐calf behavioral synchrony based on their swimming speed. We found that mothers and calves allocated much of their time to low‐level activities (i.e., static/quasi‐static or swimming at low speed). Young calves engaged more in slow swimming than older calves and mothers. Mothers with younger calves tended to stay static or quasi‐static less than mothers with older ones. Calves displayed some degree of independence in activities but were also observed synchronizing their activities with their mothers. Depending on the nature of the activity, the initiation of it was driven by either the calf or the mother. Our study provides additional knowledge for understanding the behavioral dynamics and interactions within humpback whale mother‐calf pairs. Hox genes are transcriptional regulators that elicit cell positional identity along the anterior–posterior region of the body plan across different lineages of Metazoan. Comparison of Hox gene expression across distinct species reveals their evolutionary conservation; however, their gains and losses in different lineages can correlate with body plan modifications and morphological novelty. We compare the expression of 11 Hox genes found within Streblospio benedicti, a marine annelid that produces two types of offspring with distinct developmental and morphological features. For these two distinct larval types, we compare Hox gene expression through ontogeny using hybridization chain reaction (HCR) probes for in situ hybridization and RNA-seq data. We find that Hox gene expression patterning for both types is typically similar at equivalent developmental stages. However, some Hox genes have spatial or temporal differences between the larval types that are associated with morphological and life-history differences. This is the first comparison of developmental divergence in Hox gene expression within a single species and these changes reveal how body plan differences may arise in larval evolution. In human infants, the ability to show gaze alternations between an object of interest and another individual is considered fundamental to the development of complex social-cognitive abilities. Here we show that well-socialised dog puppies show gaze alternations in two contexts at an early age, 6–7 weeks. Thus, 69.4% of puppies in a novel object test and 45.59% of puppies during an unsolvable task alternated their gaze at least once between a person's face and the object. In both contexts, the frequency of gaze alternations was positively correlated with the duration of whimpering, supporting the communicative nature of puppies' gazing. Furthermore, the number of gaze alternations in the two contexts was correlated, indicating an underlying propensity for gazing at humans despite likely different motivations in the two contexts. Similar to humans, and unlike great apes or wolves, domestic dogs show gaze alternations from an early age if they are well-socialised. They appear to have a genetic preparedness to communicate with humans via gaze alternations early in ontogeny, but they may need close contact with humans for this ability to emerge, highlighting the interactive effects of domestication and environmental factors on behavioural development in dogs. During their development, amphibians undergo various physiological processes that may affect their susceptibility to environmental pollutants. Naturally occurring fluctuations caused by developmental events are often overlooked in ecotoxicological studies. Our aim is to investigate how biomarkers of oxidative stress are modulated at different stages of larval development in the Amazonian amphibian species, Physalaemus ephippifer. The premetamorphosis, prometamorphosis and metamorphic climax stages were used to analyze total antioxidant capacity (ACAP), glutathione S-transferase (GST) activity, lipid peroxidation (LPO) levels and the expression of genes nrf2, gst, gsr (glutathione reductase) and gclc (glycine-cysteine ligase, catalytic subunit). Although there was no difference in ACAP and the genes expression among the studied stages, individuals from the premetamorphosis and prometamorphosis showed higher GST activity than ones under the climax. LPO levels were highest in individuals from the metamorphic climax. The present study suggests that the oxidative status changes during ontogeny of P. ephippifer tadpoles, especially during the metamorphic climax, the most demanding developmental phase. Variations in the redox balance at different developmental stages may lead to a divergent response to pollution. Therefore, we recommend that studies using anuran larvae as biomonitors consider possible physiological differences during ontogeny in their respective analyses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The phenomenon of empathy is an intersubjective process of feeling and a particular form of intentionality. Moral empathy refers to a type of empathy that can trigger moral action, with the embodied intersubjectivity laying the foundation for its emergence. This paper attempts to propose a comprehensive theoretical model of moral empathy from the perspective of intersubjective phenomenology, which includes the following. (1) The moral dimension of perceptual empathy: at the subpersonal, unconscious, and perceptual–motor level, embodied empathic practices are essential for the formation of moral consciousness and the emergence of moral empathy. (2) The moral dimension of situational empathy: following the development of shared attention mechanisms, children can direct towards the intentional objects of others through embodied situational cues to perceive the psychological state of others and generate the moral empathy of "ought", leading to dyadic morality that promotes cooperative behavior. (3) The moral dimension of narrative empathy: the narrative practices of moral empathy refer to the processes by which children could perceive and understand the moral situation of characters within an embodied narrative structure, subsequently generate prosocial motives such as empathic concern, and then accept the "objective" moral norms of the group consciousness embedded in the narrative. Understanding the proximate and ultimate causes of phenotypic variation is fundamental in evolutionary research, as such variation provides the substrate for selection to act upon. Although trait variation can arise due to selection, the importance of neutral processes is sometimes understudied. We presented the first reference-quality genome of the Red Diamond Rattlesnake (Crotalus ruber) and used range-wide 'omic data to estimate the degree to which neutral and adaptive evolutionary processes shaped venom evolution. We characterized population structure and found substantial genetic differentiation across two populations, each with distinct demographic histories. We identified significant differentiation in venom expression across age classes with substantially reduced but discernible differentiation across populations. We then used conditional redundancy analysis to test whether venom expression variation was best predicted by neutral divergence patterns or geographically variable (a)biotic factors. Snake size was the most significant predictor of venom variation, with environment, prey availability, and neutral sequence variation also identified as significant factors, though to a lesser degree. The representation of intelligence is achieved by patterns of connections among neurons in brains and machines. Brains grow continuously, such that their patterns of connections develop through activity-dependent specification, with the continuing ontogenesis of individual experience. The theory of active inference proposes that the developmental organization of sentient systems reflects general processes of informatic self-evidencing, through the minimization of free energy. We interpret this theory to imply that the mind may be described in information terms that are not dependent on a specific physical substrate. At a certain level of complexity, self-evidencing of living (self-organizing) information systems becomes hierarchical and reentrant, such that effective consciousness emerges as the consequence of a good regulator. We propose that these principles imply that an adequate reconstruction of the computational dynamics of an individual human brain/mind is possible with sufficient neuromorphic computational emulation. Multicopied mitogenome are prone to mutation during replication often resulting in heteroplasmy. The derived variants in a cell, organ, or an individual animal constitute a mitogene pool. The individual mitogene pool is initiated by a small fraction of the egg mitogene pool. However, the characteristics and relationship between them has not yet been investigated. This study quantitatively analyzed the heteroplasmy landscape, genetic loads, and selection strength of the mitogene pool of egg and hatchling in the silver carp (Hypophthalmichthys molitrix) using high-throughput resequencing. The results showed heteroplasmic sites distribute across the whole mitogenome in both eggs and hatchlings. The dominant substitution was Transversion in eggs and Transition in hatching accounting for 95.23 % ± 2.07 % and 85.38 % ± 6.94 % of total HP sites, respectively. The total genetic loads were 0.293 ± 0.044 in eggs and 0.228 ± 0.022 in hatchlings (⁠ P = 0.048 ⁠). The d N /d S ratio was 58.03 ± 38.98 for eggs and 9.44 ± 3.93 for hatchlings (⁠ P = 0.037 ⁠). These results suggest that the mitogenomes were under strong positive selection in eggs with tolerance to variants with deleterious effects, while the selection was positive but much weaker in hatchlings showing marked quality control. Based on these findings, we proposed a trans-generation dynamics model to explain differential development mode of the two mitogene pool between oocyte maturation and ontogenesis of offspring. Nineteen traits were described to define the shapes of the otoliths. The outcomes of this study display ontogenetic variations for different age groups based on the recorded shapes. Otoliths of the young individuals belonging to fish length groups GI and GII have shown differences in the otolith shape from those of the older individuals of the remaining seven length groups examined. A comparison with earlier published otolith description on C. auratus collected from other areas showed some interspecific variation across larger geographic distances, making some characters useless for diagnostic purposes. Other otolith features were shown to be consistent in otoliths from different length groups and such characteristics could be considered for species identification purposes. These characteristics are otolith width, depth, shape of the mesial and the lateral surfaces, shape of the sulcus acusticus, shape of the ostium and cauda and shape of the ostio-caudal differentiation. Objectives: This study aims to conduct a thorough characterization of hand morphology. Employing a 2D geometric morphometric approach, we scrutinize individual fingers and the palm, delineating the ontogenetic trajectories for each biological sex and investigating the alterations that take place at various stages of human development. Materials and methods: A set of thirty‐two 2D anatomical landmarks were assessed in a sex‐balanced sample of human hands (F = 275, M = 250 males), spanning all stages of human development. Following Procrustes registration, the data on size and shape for individual fingers and the palm were examined for each biological sex and age group. Regression analysis was utilized to quantify ontogenetic trajectories for each biological sex. Results: The findings suggest a gradual escalation in sexual dimorphism throughout human development, with statistically noteworthy distinctions becoming apparent in size starting at the age of 3, and in shape from the age of 7 onwards. Additionally, our analyses uncover a distinctive sigmoid pattern between sexes, indicating that biological male hands exhibit a sturdier build compared to biological female hands from early childhood onward. This study compares oil and mucilage idioblasts occurring together in the vegetative organs of Ocotea pulchella, a Lauraceae species. Our focus is specifically on the ontogeny and developmental cytology of these secretory cells. Both types of idioblasts originate from solitary cells located in the fundamental meristem, underlying the protodermis. The growth of both types of idioblasts is asynchronous, with the oil idioblasts developing first, but their initiation is restricted to the early stages of organ development. Mucilaginous idioblasts occur exclusively in the palisade parenchyma, while oil idioblasts are scattered throughout the mesophyll, midrib, and petiole of the leaves. The lamellar secretion of mucilage idioblasts is mostly made up of polysaccharides, while the secretion of oil idioblasts is made up of terpenes and lipids. Cupule occurred only in the oil idioblasts, while suberized layers occurred in both types of cells. We found that immature oil idioblasts that are close to each other fuse; mature mucilage idioblasts have labyrinthine walls arranged in a reticulate pattern; the cells close to the oil idioblasts have a pectin protective layer; and the oil idioblasts have a sheath of phenolic cells. In contrast to previous reports, the two types of secretory idioblasts were recognized during the early stages of their development. The results emphasize the importance of combining optical and electron microscopy methods to observe the ontogenetic, histochemical and ultrastructural changes that occur during the development of the secretory idioblasts. Simple, affordable, and reliable methods for assessing the maturation status of brain structures are vital for preclinical studies related to the effects of early-life stress. These methods make it possible to evaluate the effectiveness of specific therapies or the prevention of stress-related pathological changes. The morphology of astrocytes is one of the markers representing functional state of synapses and thus it is indicative of maturation state of neuronal networks. We performed the method for evaluating the morphological characteristics of astrocytes using epifluorescence microscopy and the ImageJ software. Application of the method to brain sections of rats on postnatal days 18 and 30 revealed the morphological changes in the astrocytes of the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala during normal ontogeny. The proposed method makes it possible to evaluate not only the density of the cell population, but also their morphological parameters associated with the degree of branching and the length of the astrocyte processes. The approach used revealed sexual dimorphism in the ontogeny: the length of the astrocytic processes increased during maturation from juvenile to pubertal period in the basolateral nucleus of the amygdala only in females but not in males. Larvae of lacewings (Neuroptera) are known to be fierce predators today. Most characteristic are their prominent piercing-sucking stylets, which are used for venom injection and sucking out the fluids of the prey. Among lacewing larvae, aphidlions (larvae of the groups Chrysopidae and Hemerobiidae, green and brown lacewings) are today highly specialised to feed on aphids and evolved strategies to not be detected and attacked by, e.g., aphid-protecting ants. Fossil relatives of modern aphidlions seem to have also employed other strategies. For the species Pedanoptera arachnophila from about 100-million-year-old Kachin amber, Myanmar, an interaction of its larvae with spiders has been assumed. We present here new specimens resembling these larvae, including one piece of Cretaceous Kachin amber with a syn-inclusion of an aphidlion-like larva and an immature planthopper, indicating planthoppers as potential prey of the group about 100 million years ago. The morphology of the lacewing larva, with a trapezoid head capsule (in dorsal view), simple, toothless stylets, very elongate legs, and a spindle-shaped trunk, indicates that it is conspecific or at least closely related to P. arachnophila. The striped murrel (Channa striatus) is an economically valuable species in aquaculture due to its high price, medicinal properties, rapid growth, widespread consumer appeal, and ability to thrive in high-density intensive farming owing to its air-breathing capabilities. Despite these advantages, challenges in larval rearing hinder the production of high-quality fingerlings with increased survival rate. This review examines current larval rearing protocols for striped murrel, identifies bottlenecks, and explores digestive development during early stages to enhance understanding of its ontogeny. While advancements have been made, there are gaps in knowledge regarding the roles of specific genes and hormones during early development, and the impact of environmental factors on larval survival and metabolism. To address these gaps, this review draws an extensive knowledge acquired from studies on other fish species, examining digestive and metabolic genes, hormones, and environmental factors, with the goal of advancing larviculture practices for striped murrel. The life history of parasitoids is divided into a parasitic immature stage living in or on a host invertebrate and a free‐living adult stage. We still have little consensus on how larvae and adult parasitoids differ in their responses to environmental heat waves.We tested the performance of two cosmopolitan drosophila pupal parasitoids, Pachycrepoideus vindemiae (Hymenoptera: Pteromalidae) and Trichopria drosophilae (Hymenoptera: Diapriidae), when exposed to 35 and 40°C heat waves in the larval and adult stage, respectively. Additionally, we tested if heat hardening in the larval stage influenced the thermal tolerance of adult parasitoids.P. vindemiae had a higher tolerance to heat waves than T. drosophilae in both the larval and adult stages. We did not find significantly increased thermal tolerance of adult wasps that experienced heat hardening during the larval stage.A 35°C heat wave had no effect on P. vindemiae. Larval T. drosophilae that experienced a 35°C heat wave had longer development times, but individuals that survived showed no significant decrease in longevity and fecundity compared with those without warming experience. By contrast, adult T. drosophilae suffered less mortality from the 35°C heat wave, but individuals that survived had significantly reduced longevity and fecundity. A 40°C heat wave resulted in higher mortality in the larval stage than in the adult stage for both parasitoid species.Our study clearly revealed the contrasting responses to heat waves in the larval and adult stages of two parasitoids and highlighted the importance of ontogenetic differences in thermal tolerance in predicting parasitoid distributions and population dynamics. The settlement phase is a challenging period for meropelagic octopus, as they adapt to their new life in the sea bottom after a planktonic period. Their ecology and trophic interactions with the surrounding fauna in the wild are practically unknown. To understand their predatory role in the littoral zone, the diet of recently settled Octopus vulgaris from a Mediterranean sandy bottom was studied through molecular methods. Amphipods were present in all the analysed stomach contents, with a total of 20 amphipod taxa recorded as prey. Jassa slatteryi and Microprotopus maculatus were the most commonly found amphipod species. Hydrozoans, decapod crustaceans, cephalopods and bivalves followed amphipods in importance. Niche breadth index assigned to small recently settled octopus the role of a specialised predator, increasing the diversity of prey as they grow. Larger juveniles displayed a higher number of prey taxa suggesting a decreasing predatory specialisation with octopus size and an ontogenetic shift in trophic ecology from diet mainly based on amphipods to a richer diet. The considerable arm elongation and the strong muscular arm crown development after settlement probably allow the juvenile benthic octopus to develop ambush predation and speculative hunting, increasing the range of potential benthic prey species along its adaptation to the benthos. The functioning of the cardiovascular system is critical for embryo survival. Cardiac contractions depend on the sequential activation of different classes of voltage-gated ion channels. Understanding the fundamental features of these interactions is important for identifying the mechanisms of pathologies development in the myocardium. However, at present there is no consensus on which ion channels are involved in the formation of automaticity in the early embryonic stages. The aim of this study was to elucidate the expression of genes encoding various types of ion channels that are involved in the generation of electrical activity chicken heart at different stages of ontogenesis. We analyzed the expression of 14 genes from different families of ion channels. It was revealed that the expression profiles of ion channel genes change depending on the stages of ontogenesis. The HCN4 , CACNA1D , SCN1A , SCN5A , KCNA1 genes have maximum expression at the tubular heart stage. In adult, a switch occurs to the higher expression of CACNA1C , KCNH6 , RYR and SLC8A1 genes. This data correlated with the results obtained by the microelectrode method. It can be assumed that the automaticity of the tubular heart is mainly due to the mechanism of the «membrane–clock» (hyperpolarization-activated current (I f), Ca2+–current L–type (I CaL), Na+–current (I Na) and the slow component of the delayed rectifier K+–current (I Ks)). Whereas in adult birds, the mechanism for generating electrical impulses is determined by both « membrane– clock» and «Ca2+–clock». An ecological and physiological retrospective transformation of the data from the dry mass tables obtained by V.A. Usoltsev has been carried out for 7 coniferous and deciduous species (Larix sukaczewii, Picea abies, Pinus sylvestris, Betula alba, Quercus robur, Tilia cordata and Fraxinus excelsior) in the central part of the Russian Plain. In the age range from 5–20 to 80–200 years, the indicators of net photosynthetic productivity, net mineral productivity, net primary production, carbon sequestration, free oxygen emission and biological productivity have been determined at the organism level. When establishing these parameters, plants have been considered from the standpoint of ecology and the structure of a modular organism. The calculation of net mineral productivity has been carried out according to I.A. Muromtsev and V.M. Lebedev, and the net productivity of photosynthesis has been calculated according to A.A. Nichiporovich. A decrease in all physiological parameters with age has been recorded at a simultaneous increase in the ratio of root to photosynthetic potential (as an adaptive response to a decrease in the availability of nutrients). In all species, upon reaching the age of 20–30 years, a sharp decrease in the absorption activity of the roots has been revealed, which has stabilized at an extremely low level by the age of 50–60 years. The relationship between the listed plant indicators and their age for the studied species has been negative, and the relationship between mineral and biological productivity has been characterized as highly positive. In comparable age periods (30, 60 and 90 years), the studied species differed in nitrogen absorption by the root system by 21.7–28.0 times, in net photosynthetic productivity – by 4.4–7.0 times, in the value of net primary production – by 1.8–6.2 times, in nitrogen absorption – by 3.2– 6.1 times, in carbon sequestration and free oxygen emission – by 1.8–6.2 times, and in the mass of the whole plant – by 2.4–3.9 times. According to the accumulated dry mass, tree species at 90 years of age have been arranged in the following descending order: oak, spruce, larch, pine, linden, ash and birch.

We provide data on the biology of Zercon hamaricus Kaczmarek et al. 2021 with regard to duration of egg and juvenile stages, analysis of change of body size during ontogeny, population parameters and morphological analysis of egg and all postembryonic stages using scanning electron microscopy. We confirmed the effectiveness of using hexamethyldisilazane in drying of Z. hamaricus individuals for SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) analysis. The overall egg duration was 3.7 ± 1.8 days on average. Duration of postembryonic stages ranged from 4.1 to 4.9 days and was the longest in deutonymphs. Change in length was statistically insignificant in larvae and significant in nymphs. At the species’ type locality juveniles (protonymphs) predominated, females were more abundant than males and juveniles were more abundant than adults. The exochorion of eggs of Z. hamaricus consists of dense areola with long processes and a fine polygonal pattern. We report on the presence and arrangement of metapodal plates in protonymphs and deutonymphs, and illustrate the post-coxal cuticular spines in adults. The influence of preparation method on the shape of the peritreme, position of seta r1 and shield and body size are discussed.

Understanding animal behaviour can feel like deciphering a foreign language. In 1963, pioneering ethologist Nikolaas Tinbergen offered a key: four fundamental questions to dissect behaviour’s complexities and reduce interpretive bias. These “Four Questions” fall into two categories: Proximate (how?) and Ultimate (why?). The Proximate questions ask how the behaviour is triggered (Causation) and develops over time (Ontogeny). The Ultimate questions delve into its evolutionary history (Phylogeny) and purpose (Function). Traditionally used in behavioural ecology, Tinbergen’s framework finds new relevance in fields like sentience, welfare, conservation, and animal management. This paper illustrates how further integration of these Questions into applied research can improve outcomes. For example, captive animals can receive enrichment seemingly “unnatural” in origin and form. Does such enrichment trigger species-typical behaviours, fulfilling the same adaptive function as natural stimuli would? Understanding a species’ natural behaviour patterns and how the performance of such activities promotes positive welfare states is key to biologically relevant population management. Tinbergen’s Four Questions can help scientists to decipher the relevance of natural behaviour, and how a species’ responses to their environment indicate what individuals need and want at a specific time or place. By applying the Four Questions, we can answer this question and, in turn, refine husbandry practices and conserve behavioural diversity in managed populations. Sixty years after their conception, Tinbergen’s Four Questions remain a powerful tool for behavioural research. By embracing different biological disciplines within a unified framework, applied animal zoo science will continue to advance and provide credible evidence-based outputs.

Abstract Macrophages play crucial and versatile roles in regulating tissue repair and regeneration upon injury. However, due to their complex compositional heterogeneity and functional plasticity, deciphering the nature of different macrophage subpopulations and unraveling their dynamics and precise roles during the repair process have been challenging. With its distinct advantages, zebrafish (Danio rerio) has emerged as an invaluable model for studying macrophage development and functions, especially in tissue repair and regeneration, providing valuable insights into our understanding of macrophage biology in health and diseases. In this review, we present the current knowledge and challenges associated with the role of macrophages in tissue repair and regeneration, highlighting the significant contributions made by zebrafish studies. We discuss the unique advantages of the zebrafish model, including its genetic tools, imaging techniques, and regenerative capacities, which have greatly facilitated the investigation of macrophages in these processes. Additionally, we outline the potential of zebrafish research in addressing the remaining challenges and advancing our understanding of the intricate interplay between macrophages and tissue repair and regeneration.
