Search

The electron antinuetrino flux limits are presented for the brightest gamma-ray burst (GRB) of all time, GRB221009A, over a range of 1.8-200 MeV using the Kamioka Liquid Scintillator Anti Neutrino Detector (KamLAND). Using a variety of time windows to search for electron antineutrinos coincident with the GRB, we set an upper limit on the flux under the assumption of various neutrino source spectra. No excess was observed in any time windows ranging from seconds to days around the event trigger time. We present a search for neutrinoless double-beta ($0\nu\beta\beta$) decay of $^{136}$Xe using the full KamLAND-Zen 800 dataset with 745 kg of enriched xenon, corresponding to an exposure of $2.097$ ton yr of $^{136}$Xe. This updated search benefits from a more than twofold increase in exposure, recovery of photo-sensor gain, and reduced background from muon-induced spallation of xenon. Combining with the search in the previous KamLAND-Zen phase, we obtain a lower limit for the $0\nu\beta\beta$ decay half-life of $T_{1/2}^{0\nu} > 3.8 \times 10^{26}$ yr at 90% C.L., a factor of 1.7 improvement over the previous limit. The corresponding upper limits on the effective Majorana neutrino mass are in the range 28-122 meV using phenomenological nuclear matrix element calculations., Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2203.02139

Single atomic defects are prominent windows to look into host quantum states because collective responses from the host states emerge as localized states around the defects. Friedel oscillations and Kondo clouds in Fermi liquids are quintessential examples. However, the situation is quite different for quantum spin liquid (QSL), an exotic state of matter with fractionalized quasiparticles and topological order arising from a profound impact of quantum entanglement. Elucidating the underlying local electronic property has been challenging due to the charge neutrality of fractionalized quasiparticles and the insulating nature of QSLs. Here, using spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy, we report atomically resolved images of monolayer $\alpha-RuCl_3$, the most promising Kitaev QSL candidate, on metallic substrates. We find quantum interference in the insulator manifesting as incommensurate and decaying spatial oscillations of the local density of states around defects with a characteristic bias dependence. The oscillation differs from any known spatial structures in its nature and does not exist in other Mott insulators, implying it is an exotic oscillation involved with excitations unique to $\alpha-RuCl_3$. Numerical simulations suggest that the observed oscillation can be reproduced by assuming that itinerant Majorana fermions of Kitaev QSL are scattered across the Majorana Fermi surface. The oscillation provides a new approach to exploring Kitaev QSLs through the local response against defects like Friedel oscillations in metals., Comment: v2 to appear in PRX

THz magnetization dynamics is a key property of antiferromagnets as well as ferrimagnets that could harness the THz forefront and spintronics. While most of the present THz measurement techniques are for bulk materials whose sensitivities rely on the volume of the material, measurement techniques suitable for thin films are quite limited. In this study, we explored and demonstrated electrical detection of the antiferromagnetic dynamics in ferrimagnetic Gd-Co thin films by using a 154 GHz gyrotron, a high-power electromagnetic wave source. Captured resonant modes allow us to characterize the peculiar magnetization dynamics of the Gd-Co around the net angular momentum compensation. As the gyrotron frequency is scalable up to THz, our demonstration can be an important milestone toward the THz measurements for antiferro- and ferri- magnetic thin films.

Spin dynamics of the spin-1/2 kagome lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$ was studied using high-resolution, time-of-flight inelastic neutron scattering. The flat mode, a characteristic of the frustrated kagome antiferromagnet, and the low-energy dispersive mode, which is dominated by magnons, can be well described by the linear spin-wave theory. However, the theory fails to describe three weakly dispersive modes between 9 and 14 meV. These modes could be attributed to two-spinon bound states, which decay into free spinons away from the zone center and at a high temperature, giving rise to continuum scattering., Comment: 4 figures and Supplementary Information

In contrast to electron (fermion) systems, topological phases of charge neutral bosons have been poorly understood despite recent extensive research on insulating magnets. The most important unresolved issue is how the inevitable inter-bosonic interactions influence the topological properties. It has been proposed that the quantum magnet SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ with an exact ground state serves as an ideal platform for this investigation, as the system is expected to be a magnetic analogue of a Chern insulator with electrons replaced by bosonic magnetic excitations (triplons). Here, in order to examine topologically protected triplon chiral edge modes in SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$, we measured and calculated the thermal Hall conductivity $\kappa_{xy}$. Our calculations show that the sign of $\kappa_{xy}$ is negative, which is opposite to the previous calculations, and its magnitude is 2$\pi$ times smaller. No discernible $\kappa_{xy}$ was observed, which is at most 20-30% of our calculations if present. This implies that even relatively weak inter-particle interactions seriously influence the topological transport properties at finite temperatures. These demonstrate that, in contrast to fermionic cases, the picture of non-interacting topological quasi-particles cannot be naively applied to bosonic systems, calling special attention to the interpretation of the topological bosonic excitations reported for various insulating magnets., Comment: 11 pages, 11 figures

Magnetic skyrmion, i.e. a topologically stable swirling spin texture, appears as a particle-like object in the two-dimensional (2D) systems, and has recently attracted attention as a candidate of novel information carrier. In the real three-dimensional (3D) systems, a skyrmion is expected to form a string structure along an extra dimension, while its experimental identification has rarely been achieved. Here, we report the direct visualization of 3D shape of individual skyrmion strings, for the recently discovered room-temperature skyrmion-hosting noncentrosymmetric compound Mn1.4Pt0.9Pd0.1Sn. For this purpose, we have newly developed the magnetic X-ray tomography measurement system that can apply magnetic field, which plays a key role on the present achievement. Through the tomographic reconstruction of the 3D magnetization distribution based on the transmission images taken from various angles, a genuine skyrmion string running through the entire thickness of the sample, as well as various defect structures such as the interrupted and Y-shaped strings, are successfully identified. The observed point defect may represent the emergent magnetic monopole, as recently proposed theoretically. The present tomographic approach with tunable magnetic field paves the way for the direct visualization of the structural dynamics of individual skyrmion strings in the 3D space, which will contribute to the better understanding of the creation, annihilation and transfer process of these topological objects toward the potential device applications., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

An anapole state that breaks inversion and time reversal symmetries with preserving translation symmetry of underlying lattice has aroused great interest as a new quantum state, but only a few candidate materials have been reported. Recently, in a spin-orbit coupled Mott insulator \SIR, the emergence of a possible hidden order phase with broken inversion symmetry has been suggested at $T_{\Omega}$ above the N\'{e}el temperature by optical second harmonic generation measurements. Moreover, polarized neutron diffraction measurements revealed the broken time reversal symmetry below $T_{\Omega}$, which was supported by subsequent muon spin relaxation experiments. However, the nature of this mysterious phase remains largely elusive. Here, we investigate the hidden order phase through the combined measurements of the in-plane magnetic anisotropy with exceptionally high-precision magnetic torque and the nematic susceptibility with elastoresistance. A distinct two-fold in-plane magnetic anisotropy along the [110] Ir-O-Ir bond direction sets in below $\sim T_{\Omega}$, providing thermodynamic evidence for a nematic phase transition with broken $C_4$ rotational symmetry. However, in contrast to the even-parity nematic transition reported in other correlated electron systems, the nematic susceptibility exhibits no divergent behavior towards $T_{\Omega}$. These results provide bulk evidence for an odd-parity order parameter with broken rotational symmetry in the hidden order state. We discuss the hidden order in terms of an anapole state, in which polar toroidal moment is induced by two current loops in each IrO$_6$ octahedron of opposite chirality. Contrary to the simplest loop-current pattern previously suggested, the present results are consistent with a pattern in which the intra-unit cell loop-current flows along only one of the diagonal directions in the IrO$_4$ square., Comment: 11 pages, 10 figures

This paper introduces the concept of spin-orbit-torque-MRAM (SOT-MRAM) based physical unclonable function (PUF). The secret of the PUF is stored into a random state of a matrix of perpendicular SOT-MRAMs. Here, we show experimentally and with micromagnetic simulations that this random state is driven by the intrinsic nonlinear dynamics of the free layer of the memory excited by the SOT. In detail, a large enough current drives the magnetization along an in-plane direction. Once the current is removed, the in-plane magnetic state becomes unstable evolving towards one of the two perpendicular stable configurations randomly. In addition, an hybrid CMOS/spintronics model is used to evaluate the electrical characteristics of a PUF realized with an array of 16x16 SOT-MRAM cells. Beyond robustness against voltage and temperature variations, hardware authentication based on this PUF scheme has additional advantages over other PUF technologies such as non-volatility (no power consumption in standby mode), reconfigurability (the secret can be rewritten), and scalability. We report on low-temperature heat-transport properties of the spin-1/2 triangular-lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$. Broad maxima in the thermal conductivity along the three principal axes, observed at about 5 K, are interpreted in terms of the Debye model, including the phonon Umklapp scattering. For thermal transport along the $b$ axis, we observed a pronounced field-dependent anomaly, close to the transition into the three-dimensional long-range-ordered state. No such anomalies were found for the transport along the $a$ and $c$ directions. We argue that this anisotropic behavior is related to an additional heat-transport channel through magnetic excitations, that can best propagate along the direction of the largest exchange interaction. Besides, peculiarities of the heat transport of Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ in magnetic fields up to the saturation field and above are discussed.

High-resolution time-of-flight powder neutron diffraction and high-field magnetization were measured to investigate the magnetic structure and existence of a field-induced magnetic phase transition in the distorted kagome antiferromagnet Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$. Upon cooling from room temperature, the compound undergoes a structural phase transition at $T_\textrm{t}=185$ K from the rhombohedral space group $R\bar{3}m$ with the perfect kagome spin network to the monoclinic space group $P2_1/n$ with the distorted kagome planes. The distortion results in three inequivalent exchange interactions among the $S=1/2$ Cu$^{2+}$ spins that magnetically order below $T_\textrm{N}=20.2$ K. Magnetization measured with a magnetic field applied within the kagome plane reveals small in-plane ferromagnetism resulting from spin canting. On the other hand, the out-of-plane magnetization does not show a clear hysteresis loop of the ferromagnetic component nor a prominent anomaly up to 170 T, with the exception of the subtle knee-like bend around 90 T, which could indicate the 1/3 magnetization plateau. The combined analysis using the irreducible representations of the magnetic space groups and magnetic structure refinement on the neutron powder diffraction data suggests that the magnetic moments order in the magnetic space group $P2_1'/n'$ with the all-in-all-out spin structure, which by symmetry allows for the in-plane canting, consistent with the in-plane ferromagnetism observed in the magnetization., Comment: 14 pages, 9 figures, published version with typos corrected

Quantum triangular-lattice antiferromagnets are important prototype systems to investigate phenomena of the geometrical frustration in condensed matter. Apart from highly unusual magnetic properties, they possess a rich phase diagram (ranging from an unfrustrated square lattice to a quantum spin liquid), yet to be confirmed experimentally. One major obstacle in this area of research is the lack of materials with appropriate (ideally tuned) magnetic parameters. Using Cs$_2$CuCl$_4$ as a model system, we demonstrate an alternative approach, where, instead of the chemical composition, the spin Hamiltonian is altered by hydrostatic pressure. The approach combines high-pressure electron spin resonance and magnetization measurements, allowing us not only to quasi-continuously tune the exchange parameters, but also to accurately monitor them. Our experiments indicate a substantial increase of the exchange coupling ratio from 0.3 to 0.42 at a pressure of 1.8 GPa, revealing a number of emergent field-induced phases.

The magnetization dynamics for ferrimagnets at the angular momentum compensation temperature T_A is believed to be analogous to that for antiferromagnets. We investigated the pulsed-laser-induced magnetization dynamics in amorphous rare-earth transition-metal ferrimagnet films with a T_A just above room temperature. For a low pulse fluence, the magnetization precession frequency decreases as the applied magnetic field increases, whereas for a higher pulse fluence, it increases as the applied field increases. The result was well explained by the left-handed and right-handed precession modes of the antiferromagnetic-like resonance at temperatures below and above T_A, respectively, and the data were in agreement with the theoretical simulation. Antiferromagnetic materials could represent the future of spintronic applications thanks to the numerous interesting features they combine: they are robust against perturbation due to magnetic fields, produce no stray fields, display ultrafast dynamics and are capable of generating large magneto-transport effects. Intense research efforts over the past decade have been invested in unraveling spin transport properties in antiferromagnetic materials. Whether spin transport can be used to drive the antiferromagnetic order and how subsequent variations can be detected are some of the thrilling challenges currently being addressed. Antiferromagnetic spintronics started out with studies on spin transfer, and has undergone a definite revival in the last few years with the publication of pioneering articles on the use of spin-orbit interactions in antiferromagnets. This paradigm shift offers possibilities for radically new concepts for spin manipulation in electronics. Central to these endeavors are the need for predictive models, relevant disruptive materials and new experimental designs. This paper reviews the most prominent spintronic effects described based on theoretical and experimental analysis of antiferromagnetic materials. It also details some of the remaining bottlenecks and suggests possible avenues for future research.

Current-induced magnetization excitation is a core phenomenon for next-generation magnetic nanodevices, and has been attributed to the spin-transfer torque (STT) that originates from the transfer of the spin angular momentum between a conduction electron and a local magnetic moment through the exchange coupling. However, the same coupling can transfer not only spin but also energy, though the latter transfer mechanism has been largely ignored. Here we report on experimental evidence concerning the energy transfer in ferromagnet/heavy metal bilayers. The magnetoresistance (MR) is found to depend significantly on the current direction down to low in-plane currents, for which STT cannot play any significant role. Instead we find that the observed MR is consistent with the energy transfer mechanism through the quantum spin-flip process, which predicts short wavelength, current-direction-dependent magnon excitations in the THz frequency range. Our results unveil another aspect of current-induced magnetic excitation, and open a channel for the dc-current-induced generation of THz magnons.

Electric field effect on magnetism is an appealing technique for manipulating the magnetization at a low cost of energy. Here, we show that the local magnetization of the ultra-thin Co film can be switched by just applying a gate electric field without an assist of any external magnetic field or current flow. The local magnetization switching is explained by the nucleation and annihilation of the magnetic domain through the domain wall motion induced by the electric field. Our results lead to external field free and ultra-low energy spintronic applications.

Spin orbit torque has been intensively investigated because of its high energy efficiency in manipulating a magnetization. Although various methods for measuring the spin orbit torque have been developed so far, the measurement results often show inconsistency among the methods, implying that an electromotive force, such as Nernst effect, irrelevant to the spin orbit torque may affect the measurement results as an artifact. In this letter, we developed a unique method to distinguish the spin orbit torque and the anomalous Nernst effect. The measurement results show that the spin orbit torque can be underestimated up to 50% under the influence of the anomalous Nernst effect.

The hydrogenation of Nd2Fe14B under a high pressure of hydrogen has been investigated for the first time. At the heat-treatment temperature of 600 degree C, the almost complete decomposition of Nd2Fe14B into NdH2+x and alpha-Fe is observed, although a rather long heat-treatment time is necessary to achieve the sufficient hydrogenation. The desorption of hydrogen from NdH2+x does not occur in the furnace-cooling process., Comment: to appear in Results in Physics

We employed micro-focused Brillouin light scattering to study the amplification of the thermal spin wave eigenmodes by means of a pure spin current, generated by the spin-Hall effect, in a transversely magnetized Pt(4nm)/NiFe(4nm)/SiO2(5nm) layered nanowire with lateral dimensions 500x2750 nm2. The frequency and the cross section of both the center (fundamental) and the edge spin wave modes have been measured as a function of the intensity of the injected dc electric current. The frequency of both modes exhibits a clear redshift while their cross section is greatly enhanced on increasing the intensity of the injected dc. A threshold-like behavior is observed for a value of the injected dc of 2.8 mA. Interestingly an additional mode, localized in the central part of the nanowire, appears at higher frequency on increasing the intensity of the injected dc above the threshold value. Micromagnetic simulations were used to quantitatively reproduce the experimental results and to investigate the complex non-linear dynamics induced by the spin-Hall effect, including the modification of the spatial profile of the spin wave modes and the appearance of the extra mode above the threshold., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures in journal of applied physics 2015

We present the first experimental realization of an $S=2$ ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic (F-AF) alternating chain in a new Mn-verdazyl complex [Mn(hfac)$_2$]$\cdot$($o$-Py-V) [hfac=1,1,1,5,5,5-hexafluoroacetylacetonate; $o$-Py-V=3-(2-pyridyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl]. Through the $ab$ $initio$ molecular orbital calculation, magnetization, and ESR measurements, this compound is confirmed to form an $S=2$ F-AF alternating chain with Ising anisotropy below about 100 K. Furthermore, we find an anomalous change in magnetization at 1/4 of the saturation value, which is probably a manifestation of the quantum nature of the system., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures

Spin-transfer-torque, a transfer of angular momentum between the electron spin and the local magnetic moments, is a promising and key mechanism to control ferromagnetic materials in modern spintronic devices . However, much less attention has been paid to the same effect in antiferromagnets. For the sake of investigating how the spin current interacts with the magnetic moments in antiferromagnets, we perform spin-torque ferromagnetic resonance measurements on Co20Fe60B20 4nm/Ir25Mn75 tIrMn nm/Pt 4 nm multilayers under a spin Hall effect of Pt. The effective magnetic damping in Co20Fe60B20 is modified by the spin current injected from the Pt layer via the IrMn layer. The results indicate that the spin current interacts with IrMn magnetic moments and exerts the anti-damping torque on the magnetic moments of Co20Fe60B20 through the IrMn. It is also found that the reduction of the exchange bias in the IrMn/Pt interface degrades the anti-damping torque exerted on the Co20Fe60B20 layer, suggesting the transmission of the spin torque becomes less efficient as the interface exchange coupling degrades. Our work infers that the magnetic moments in IrMn can be manipulated by spin torque similarly to the one in a ferromagnetic layer.

We report magnetization, specific heat, and NMR measurements of 3-Br-4-F-V [=3-(3-bromo-4-fluorophenyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl], a strong-rung S=1/2 Heisenberg spin ladder with ferromagnetic leg interactions. We explain the magnetic and thermodynamic properties based on the strong-rung regime. Furthermore, we find a field-induced successive phase transition in the specific heat and the nuclear spin-lattice relaxation rate 1/T1. 19F-NMR spectra for higher- and lower-temperature phases indicate partial magnetic order and incommensurate long-range order, respectively, evidencing the presence of frustration due to weak interladder couplings., Comment: 12 pages, 3 figures

In this report, the magnetic behaviour of $NiCr_{2}O_{4}$ bulk and nanoparticle samples under different applied magnetic field has been investigated extensively. Nanoparticles of $NiCr_{2}O_{4}$ were obtained by mechanical milling of polycrystalline powder prepared by polyol method. FC-ZFC measurement of bulk at different applied magnetic field has revealed the existence of a ferrimagnetic transition around 66K followed by an antiferromagnetic transition close to 30K. However, its nano counterpart has shown remarkable change in magnetic properties - a suppression of ferrimagnetic transition accompanied by strengthening low temperature magnetic phase and observation of a new transition at 90K ($T_P$), which is weakly magnetic in nature. The frequency dependent ac susceptibility data of nanoparticle have been fitted to the well known de Almedia-Thouless equation and a $H^{2/3}$ dependence of the low temperature peak is observed with a resulting zero field freezing temperature ($T_f^0$) equal to 10.1K. Further, the dynamical behaviour near freezing temperature has been analysed in terms of critical behaviour and the obtained fitted parameters values being as $\tau_0$(relaxation time constant) = $3.6 X 10^{-6}s$, $T_f^0=8.7$K and $z\nu = 11.1$. Moreover, Vogel-Fulcher law has been used to understand the nature of freezing transition and the parameter after fitting are obtained as $E_a/k_B = 58.9$K, $\tau_0 = 5.22 \times 10^{-8}$ and $T_0 = 8.03$K. Finally, the spin-glass phase is concluded. Moreover, in contrast to bulk, the $H^{2/3}$ dependence of freezing temperature of nanoparticle sample (75h) does support the 2D surface like spin glass nature., Comment: 6 figures

We have succeeded in synthesizing single crystals of the verdazyl radical beta-2,6-Cl2-V [= beta-3-(2,6-dichlorophenyl)-1,5-diphenylverdazyl]. The ab initio MO calculation indicated the formation of an S = 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnetic chain with four-fold magnetic periodicity consisting of three types of exchange interactions.We have successfully explained the magnetic and thermodynamic properties based on the expected spin model by using the quantum Monte Carlo method. Furthermore, we revealed that the alternating and unique Ising ferromagnetic chains become effective in the specific field regions and observed a cooperative phenomenon caused by the magnetic order and quantum fluctuations. These results demonstrate that verdazyl radical could form unconventional spin model with interesting quantum behavior and provide a new way to study a variety of quantum spin systems., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Magnetic excitations in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ distorted kagome lattice antiferromagnet Cs$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$, which has an ordered ground state owing to the strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction, were studied using inelastic neutron scattering. Although the spin-wave dispersion can be qualitatively understood in terms of linear spin-wave theory (LSWT), the excitation energies are renormalized by a factor of approximately 0.6 from those calculated by LSWT, almost irrespective of the momentum transfer. This inadequacy of LSWT, which is attributed to quantum fluctuations, provides evidence of negative quantum renormalization in the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ kagome lattice antiferromagnet., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, including Supplemental Materials

High intensity pulsed neutron scattering reveals a new set of magnetic excitations in the pinwheel valence bond solid state of the distorted kagome lattice antiferromagnet Rb$_2$Cu$_3$SnF$_{12}$. The polarization of the dominant dispersive modes (2 meV $<\hbar\omega< $7 meV) is determined and found consistent with a dimer series expansion with strong Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions ($D/J=0.18$). A weakly dispersive mode near 5 meV and shifted "ghosts" of the main modes are attributed to the enlarged unit cell below a $T=215$ K structural transition. Continuum scattering between 8 meV and 10 meV might be interpreted as a remnant of the kagome spinon continuum [T.-H. Han et al., Nature 492, 406 (2012)], Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures

Determining ground states of correlated electron systems is fundamental to understanding novel phenomena in condensed matter physics. A difficulty, however, arises in a geometrically frustrated system in which the incompatibility between the global topology of an underlying lattice and local spin interactions gives rise to macroscopically degenerate ground states, potentially prompting the emergence of quantum spin states, such as resonating valence bond (RVB) and valence bond solid (VBS). Although theoretically proposed to exist in a kagome lattice -- one of the most highly frustrated lattices in two dimensions (2D) being comprised of corner-sharing triangles -- such quantum-fluctuation-induced states have not been observed experimentally. Here we report the first realization of the "pinwheel" VBS ground state in the S=1/2 deformed kagome lattice antiferromagnet Rb2Cu3SnF12. Elementary excitations of an S = 1/2 antiferromagnetic Heisenberg chain KCuGaF6 were investigated through specific heat and electron spin resonance (ESR) measurements. In this compound, a staggered field is induced perpendicular to the external field because of the alternating g tensor and the Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction with an alternating D vector. Such a spin system can be mapped onto the quantum sine-Gordon (SG) model, when subjected to the external magnetic field. Specific heat shows clear evidence of the field-induced gap, which is related to the elementary excitations, solitons and breathers, characteristic of the quantum SG model. q = 0 excitations originated from solitons and breathers were directly observed by high-frequency high-field ESR. Here we report the magnetic properties of the layered cobalt oxide system, LixCoO2, in the whole range of Li composition, 0 <= x <= 1. Based on dc-magnetic susceptibility data, combined with results of 59Co-NMR/NQR observations, the electronic phase diagram of LixCoO2 has been established. As in the related material NaxCoO2, a magnetic critical point is found to exist between x = 0.35 and 0.40, which separates a Pauli-paramagnetic and a Curie-Weiss metals. In the Pauli-paramagnetic regime (x <= 0.35), the antiferromagnetic spin correlations systematically increase with decreasing x. Nevertheless, CoO2, the x = 0 end member is a non-correlated metal in the whole temperature range studied. In the Curie-Weiss regime (x >= 0.40), on the other hand, various phase transitions are observed. For x = 0.40, a susceptibility hump is seen at 30 K, suggesting the onset of static AF order. A magnetic jump, which is likely to be triggered by charge ordering, is clearly observed at Tt = 175 K in samples with x = 0.50 (= 1/2) and 0.67 (= 2/3), while only a tiny kink appears at T = 210 K in the sample with an intermediate Li composition, x = 0.60. Thus, the phase diagram of the LixCoO2 system is complex, and the electronic properties are sensitively influenced by the Li content (x)., Comment: 29 pages, 1 table, 9 figures

We report the crystal structure and unconventional magnetic ordering of Cs_2Cu_3CeF_{12}, which is composed of buckled kagome lattice of Cu^{2+} ions. The exchange network in the buckled kagome lattice is fairly anisotropic, so that the present spin system can be divided into two subsystems: alternating Heisenberg chains with strong antiferromagnetic exchange interactions and dangling spins. Although the direct exchange interactions between neighboring spins were found to be all antiferromagnetic, ferromagnetic magnetic ordering of the dangling spins was observed. Magnetization exhibits a plateau at one-third of the saturation magnetization. CoO2 is the parent compound for the superconductor NaxCoO2\cdot1.3H2O and was widely believed to be a Mott insulator. We performed 59Co nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) studies on LixCoO2 (x = 0.35, 0.25, 0.12, and 0.0) to uncover the electronic state and spin correlations in this series of compounds which was recently obtained through electrochemical de-intercalation of Li from pristine LiCoO2. We find that although the antiferromagnetic spin correlations systematically increase with decreasing Li-content (x), the end member, CoO2 is a non-correlated metal that well satisfies the Korringa relation for a Fermi liquid. Thus, CoO2 is not simply located at the limit of x->0 for AxCoO2 (A = Li, Na) compounds. For the study of ferromagnetic materials which are compatible with group-IV semiconductor spintronics, we demonstrate control of the ferromagnetic properties of Heusler-alloys Fe_3-xMn_xSi epitaxially grown on Ge(111) by tuning the Mn composition x. Interestingly, we obtain L2_1-ordered structures even for nonstoichiometric atomic compositions. The Curie temperature of the epilayers with x ~ 0.6 exceeds 300 K. Theoretical calculations indicate that the electronic structures of the nonstoichiometric Fe_3-xMn_xSi alloys become half-metallic for 0.75 < x < 1.5.
