An increasing number of private universities in recent years are automating their library holdings by creating online catalogue. An online library catalogue refers to an electronic bibliography database that describes the different materials offered by a library. The aim of this study was to investigate the benefits of using automated library systems and online catalogues in private university libraries in North Macedonia, and to develop a model of central library catalogue database for shared network of private university material holdings. Interviews and questionnaires with students and librarians were conducted, and a detailed analysis of the South East European University library system was performed. Findings suggest that interaction and material sharing can be improved between private universities in Macedonia, resulting in easier finding of needed materials by students. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study examined perceptions and attitudes towards the uses of manual and automated catalogues among undergraduate students with a focus on three selected university libraries in North Central Nigeria, namely the University of Abuja Library, Abuja, Federal University of Technology Minna Library, Niger State and Kwara State University Library, Malete. The research design used in this study is a descriptive survey. The research population comprises the total number of undergraduate students registered with each of the libraries of the three selected universities in North Central, Nigeria. The University of Abuja Library had two thousand and seventeen (2,017) registered users, Federal University of Technology Minna, Library had two thousand four hundred and forty (2,440), and Kwara State University Malete library had four thousand eight hundred and twenty-four (4,824). This brings the total number of undergraduate library users registered with the three university libraries to 9,281. The sample size for the study was established using the random sampling table published by Israel in 1992. The table provided 200 for a population of 10,000 at ±7% Precision level and 95% confidence level. Therefore, 200 respondents were selected randomly which represent a cross-section of the population in each of the three selected universities in North Central. The instrument used to collect data was a structurally designed questionnaire. To ensure clarity of expressions and appropriateness of language used, the instrument went through face validation from some lecturers in library and information science in the selected universities. Reliability Test measurement yielded a value of 0.71 for Cronbach’s Alpha. A total number of two hundred (200) copies of the questionnaire were distributed randomly to the selected samples from the three selected institutions. Out of this, one hundred and twenty (120) copies, forty from each university library, were successfully filled, retrieved and found usable for the analysis, giving a response rate of 60%. The data generated from the questionnaire were analysed using descriptive statistics. Results were then presented in tabular forms and charts using simple percentages and frequency counts to facilitate a better understanding of the proportions in terms of particular responses. The study concluded that undergraduate students in the three selected university libraries prefer OPAC over the card catalogue; and that despite the availability of the OPAC many students still patronized the card catalogue, which means that in terms of patronage the gap between the OPAC and card catalogue is not that much. A periodic user education program for undergraduate students should be organized by the library management. This will give them the knowledge and abilities they need to find books and other information resources in the library using the card catalogue and OPAC as an effective searching tool.

This article reviews the development of a digital inventory tool developed specifically for secondary material markets. Unlike other available inventory tools, this tool aimed at including environmental assessment features, that would allow warehouse managers to have an estimation of their environmental contribution associated to their sales performance without having to engage environmental experts regularly. The resulting open source software allows to keep an inventory of items available at the warehouse, export to an online shop and generate reports of the sales and environmental benefits of reusing some of the secondary materials sold. This article explains how the tool was developed, how the simplified LCA calculations were done and integrated to the tool, the difficulties encountered when compromising ease of use with the need for reliable data to do the environmental calculations, and reflects on the reliability and scalability of the developed tool.

Istraživanje je obuhvatilo studente preddiplomskog i studente diplomskih studija na Odsjeku za informacijske i komunikacijske znanosti Filozofskog fakulteta u Zagrebu The introductory part of this paper presents the history of collections of photographs in Zagreb City Museum, where photographs have been collected since 1907. The photographs have a high artistic and documentary value. Accordingly, the interest and requirements of experts and the public alike is on the increase. Even though the photo collections had already been presented through exhibitions, catalogues and various other Museum publications, there has been an obvious need for an additional medium of digital communication. Today the online catalogue represents a keyway of access to the Museum's digital collections. The modern museum public online catalogues are based on museum collections and documentation databases and give access to museum data (metadata) and its digital representations (in this case digitalised photographs). The above-mentioned items will continue to be published in the online catalogue as well as be available for viewing in searches and in various other communication models. The public availability of data and digital representation of items makes possible the development of a different other functionalities, enabling communication and interpretation of heritage (creation of digital stories, galleries, interactive timelines, maps, virtual exhibitions and the like). The online catalogue has therefore become a communication platform enabling Museum staff (curators, archivists, museum educators) to present the users with topical and other current and interactive content. For instance, the communication platform of photograph collections of Zagreb City Museum will enable presentation of the photograph collections in the form of short narratives about the past and present of Zagreb, in line with the principles of heritage representation and digital narration. The development of Communication Platform will be planned and structured according to the Specification of the Digital Heritage Product (Šojat-Bikić, 2013). The final part of the paper analyses a user satisfaction survey regarding the form and content of the Online Catalogue as a communication platform of photograph collections of Zagreb City Museum. The survey participants were students of Bachelor and Master Studies on Information and Communication Science Department of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences in Zagreb.

[english] This paper discusses the massive changes over the last 25 years particularly in medical libraries. The modernisation and upgrade of catalogues, bibliographies and journals is been accomplished by now while the transformation in the book sector is only in the beginning. With the help of new search engine technology the idea of a one-stop-shop was implemented to complete the change from printed to online media. In order to outlast future years medical libraries will have to handle the constant pressure for change and innovations while budgets are shrinking.[german] Der Beitrag thematisiert die massiven Veränderungen, die von wissenschaftlichen Bibliotheken, insbesondere Medizinbibliotheken, in den letzten 25 Jahren bewältigt worden sind. - Abstract
Reducing duplication of works across library platforms is a highly discussed subject. Bringing together different bibliographic records of various types of documents (books, journals, theses and other types of materials) that are situated in particular libraries of UGC funded institutions would largely help in avoiding duplication efforts. In India, there are handful of such initiatives are taking place to make information services as centralized on a common platform and several similar activities are under work in progress. In-line with such developments having a common integrated centralized Online Public Access Catalogue (OPAC) across higher edcation sector is a must. In this article authors have made an attempt to put forward a proposal for developing a centralized OPAC for UGC funded institutions.

ARCHIVES collection management , *SOIL protection , *LAND management , *SOIL surveys , *ONLINE library catalogs - Abstract
Historical soil survey paper maps are valuable resources that underpin strategies to support soil protection and promote sustainable land use practices, especially in developing countries where digital soil information is often missing. However, many of the soil maps, in particular those for developing countries, are held in traditional archives that are not easily accessible to potential users. Additionally, many of these documents are over 50 years old and are beginning to deteriorate. Realising the need to conserve this information, the Joint Research Centre (JRC) and the ISRIC-World Soil Information foundation have created the European Digital Archive of Soil Maps (EuDASM), through which all archived paper maps of ISRIC has been made accessible to the public through the Internet. The immediate objective is to transfer paper-based soil maps into a digital format with the maximum possible resolution and to ensure their preservation and easy disclosure. More than 6,000 maps from 135 countries have been captured and are freely available to users through a user-friendly web-based interface. Initial feedback has been very positive, especially from users in Africa, South America and Asia to whom archived soil maps were made available to local users, often for the first time. LIBRARY catalogs , *RETROSPECTIVE conversion (Cataloging) , *LIBRARIES , *QUALITY , *WORKFLOW - Abstract
Over the last few decades, the majority of European national and university libraries started the procedure of retrospective conversion of the conventional sources of information on the older parts of their collections. The aim of the retrospective conversion is to improve the quality of library services by providing information on old publications through the web via library catalogues and group catalogues of cooperative systems, as well as to improve the speed and efficiency of work flow. The article presents several models of retrospective conversion in European libraries regarding the source and scope of the conversion, as well as the methods and organisation of the work. The article describes in more detail the work conducted on the projects of conversion in the National and University Library in Zagreb. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The indexing in online catalogues in the perception of users who are members of research groups becomes crucial in an environment of university libraries so that the catalogue of subject, first restricted to the physical limits of the library and containing only bibliographic records of documents ordered in bookshelves, becomes virtual nowadays. However, users have difficulties when they do their search by subject, because the words they use do not coincide with the terms used by the librarian at the time of indexing. Consequently, the retrieval of information becomes silent and with noise. This issue of the catalogue of subject is often the reflection of a possible deficiency of the work done by librarians, since they do not study about users in order to know their interests and opinions concerning the treatment of the documents content. It is also a reflection of the lack of an indexing policy that guides the steps of indexing. Aiming to contribute to the development of an indexing policy in university libraries under the users’ perspective, the proposal os this research was to do a study of the socio-cognitive context of users who are members of research groups in the areas of Biological and Exact Sciences and Humanities from UNESP, to get a diagnosis of their perception regarding the indexing context. The specific objectives were: developing a study on the indexing process under the indexing policy in institutional environments; investigating a method of a socio-cognitive approach by Verbal Protocol to study the users’ perception; verifying the perception of the user who participates in a research group on indexing information in university libraries for the development of online catalogues. The results showed that the indexing process has some elements of policy, such as completeness, uniqueness and language choice. The theoretical issue of this work is Eva Verona's Code of Rules for Alphabetical Catalogues with special emphasis upon the rule 96 Pseudonym which deals with various types of relationship between author's real name and its pseudonyms. The purpose of the paper is to research how does the cataloguer choose the uniform name access point, the cross-reference and see also reference in order to help the user to retrieve all the works written under the author's real name or his/her pseudonym. The aim of the paper is to represent the relationship between the real author's name and pseudonym in a few national library catalogues, e.g., The National and University Library in Zagreb (NSK), Bibliotetheque nationale de France (BnF) and Deutsche National Bibliothek (DNB). The work is split into two parts. In the first, theoretical part of our work the emphasis is on the alphabetical catalogues and its aims, author's individual name, the reasons of author's pseudonym, collective pseudonym of two authors and their creative work(s). The second part of the work is a research. The centre of our interest is to retrieve online catalogues: NSK, BnF and DNB where we find out several examples which we described, analysed, compared and commented. The final results of research show that libraries have same practices in some cases, such as choosing uniform name access point and see references, while in several examples of the use of cross-references we found some differences.

Godine 1997. Pretraživanje i označavanje su dva međusobno povezana procesa koja se moraju bazirati na istoj terminologiji., Subject search is a way to access document information in the catalog based on their content features. Components of subject search in the computer environment, are access points, such as classification tags, subject words, descriptors, title words. Search is done in a nowadays world via online catalogue. In 1997, IFLA developed a study “Functional Requirements for Bibliographic Records”, and for bibliographic marking of records, MARC (Machine Readable Cataloging) format. To enable the subject search, the key is the document subject processing. Subject heading is made of a set or line of words, that are term designations, which as a whole, give a concise statement about the subject. Search and designation are two interrelated processes that must be based on the same terminology.

If you want to work efficiently and economically in research and teaching there is a condition precedent: the admission to expert literature. To guarantee appropriate literature, interlibrary loan and document delivery is essential. Via interlibrary loan different media can be ordered at national and international libraries. As the first library in Austria we use the Aleph Sharing system for interlibrary loan. This system develops the base for computer based working in libraries and enables cooperation between libraries in Austria. For document delivery we collaborate with Subito. Subito is a document delivery service of research libraries in Germany, Austria and Switzerland from where we order most of the articles. Our users have the possibility to order their documents by a web form on our homepage. The huge number of orders shows us how important, for research and teaching, such a librarian service is.

This paper discusses the massive changes over the last 25 years particularly in medical libraries. The modernisation and upgrade of catalogues, bibliographies and journals is been accomplished by now while the transformation in the book sector is only in the beginning. With the help of new search engine technology the idea of a one-stop-shop was implemented to complete the change from printed to online media. In order to outlast future years medical libraries will have to handle the constant pressure for change and innovations while budgets are shrinking.

I u muzejskim knjižnicama, ormarići s kataložnim listićima počinju pripadati prošlosti te ih postupno zamjenjuju OPAC-i i WebPAC-i, uvjetovani informacijskom i komunikacijskom tehnologijom. Muzej Slavonije jedini je muzej u Hrvatskoj koji na svojim stranicama ima mrežni katalog zavičajne zbirke i ujedno prvi hrvatski muzej općega tipa koji se na mreži pojavio s katalogom., Influenced by the information and communication technology, the library card filing cabinets in museum libraries are being replaced by OPAC and WebPAC. The Internet has become a new medium for wider presentation of museum libraries and their holdings. Following this tendency, the library of the Museum of Slavonia decided to make its unique local history collection of books accessible to the wider public through a web catalogue. The bibliography of the collection is published in the first volume of Maria Malbaša’s Osječka bibliografija (Osijek Bibliography). One of essential goals of the online catalogue of the Essekiana collection is to present its local history books to the community and raise awareness of the value of the books kept in the biggest museum library in Croatia. The Museum of Slavonia is the only museum of a general type in Croatia that made its local history collection available thorough an online catalogue published on the museum web site.

This paper describes a new system for digitizing ceramic fabric reference collections and a preliminary evaluation of its applicability to archaeological ceramics identification. An important feature in the analysis of ceramic fabrics is the surface texture of the fresh cross section. Visibility of surface characteristics and fabric constituents on images strongly improves with the facility to rotate a sample or vary the angle of illumination. Interactive online catalogues, showing these variations using sequences of images, offer the means to imitate visual examination of the real sample. Accordingly, we have developed a system for automatic acquisition of image sequences and software to show and interact with the sequences on the web. Our system improves the visualization of the fabric characteristics to a substantial degree and may encourage the scientific use of online image reference collections. Furthermore, this system is applicable to other material where visual surface characteristics are important for identification.

Opširnije je opisan dosadašnji rad na projektima konverzije u Nacionalnoj i sveučilišnoj knjižnici u Zagrebu., Over the last few decades, the majority of European national and university libraries started the procedure of retrospective conversion of the conventional sources of information on the older parts of their collections. The article describes in more datail the work conducted on the projects of conversion in the National and University Library in Zagreb.
