Abstract

Dark matter is a key piece of the current cosmological scenario, with weakly interacting massive particles (WIMPs) a leading dark matter candidate. WIMPs have not been detected in their conventional parameter space (100 GeV ≲M χ ≲ 100 TeV), a mass range accessible with current Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes. As ultraheavy dark matter (UHDM; M χ ≳ 100 TeV) has been suggested as an underexplored alternative to the WIMP paradigm, we search for an indirect dark matter annihilation signal in a higher mass range (up to 30 PeV) with the VERITAS γ-ray observatory. With 216 hr of observations of four dwarf spheroidal galaxies, we perform an unbinned likelihood analysis. We find no evidence of a γ-ray signal from UHDM annihilation above the background fluctuation for any individual dwarf galaxy nor for a joint-fit analysis, and consequently constrain the velocity-weighted annihilation cross section of UHDM for dark matter particle masses between 1 TeV and 30 PeV. We additionally set constraints on the allowed radius of a composite UHDM particle.

Abstract

The precise measurement of cosmic-ray antinuclei serves as an important means for identifying the nature of dark matter and other new astrophysical phenomena, and could be used with other cosmic-ray species to understand cosmic-ray production and propagation in the Galaxy. For instance, low-energy antideuterons would provide a "smoking gun" signature of dark matter annihilation or decay, essentially free of astrophysical background. Studies in recent years have emphasized that models for cosmic-ray antideuterons must be considered together with the abundant cosmic antiprotons and any potential observation of antihelium. Therefore, a second dedicated Antideuteron Workshop was organized at UCLA in March 2019, bringing together a community of theorists and experimentalists to review the status of current observations of cosmic-ray antinuclei, the theoretical work towards understanding these signatures, and the potential of upcoming measurements to illuminate ongoing controversies. This review aims to synthesize this recent work and present implications for the upcoming decade of antinuclei observations and searches. This includes discussion of a possible dark matter signature in the AMS-02 antiproton spectrum, the most recent limits from BESS Polar-II on the cosmic antideuteron flux, and reports of candidate antihelium events by AMS-02; recent collider and cosmic-ray measurements relevant for antinuclei production models; the state of cosmic-ray transport models in light of AMS-02 and Voyager data; and the prospects for upcoming experiments, such as GAPS. This provides a roadmap for progress on cosmic antinuclei signatures of dark matter in the coming years.

Abstract

We present deep VERITAS observations of the blazar PKS 1424+240, along with contemporaneous Fermi Large Area Telescope, Swift X-ray Telescope, and Swift UV Optical Telescope data between 2009 February 19 and 2013 June 8. This blazar resides at a redshift of z ≥ 0.6035, displaying a significantly attenuated gamma-ray flux above 100 GeV due to photon absorption via pair-production with the extragalactic background light. We present more than 100 hr of VERITAS observations over three years, a multiwavelength light curve, and the contemporaneous spectral energy distributions. The source shows a higher flux of (2.1 ± 0.3) × 10-7 photons m-2 s -1 above 120 GeV in 2009 and 2011 as compared to the flux measured in 2013, corresponding to (1.02 ± 0.08) × 10-7 photons m-2 s-1 above 120 GeV. The measured differential very high energy (VHE; E ≥ 100 GeV) spectral indices are Γ = 3.8 ± 0.3, 4.3 ± 0.6 and 4.5 ± 0.2 in 2009, 2011, and 2013, respectively. No significant spectral change across the observation epochs is detected. We find no evidence for variability at gamma-ray opacities of greater than τ = 2, where it is postulated that any variability would be small and occur on timescales longer than a year if hadronic cosmic-ray interactions with extragalactic photon fields provide a secondary VHE photon flux. Abstract

The inclusive transverse momentum distributions of charged hadrons and K0's produced in tagged photon-photon collisions, are measured and compared to model calculations up to a pT of 5 GeV/c. The relative abundance of K0's favor the inclusion of charm. © 1993.

We have searched for the reaction e+e-, where f is either an electron, muon, or charged pion, at s =29 GeV using the Mark II detector at the SLAC PEP storage ring. One candidate event is found while 2.3 events are expected from known processes. We would expect to see 11 events if the cross section for e+e- at s=29 GeV were enhanced by the factor of 4.7 which the ALEPH Collaboration reports for s=91 GeV. We also look for e+e- and e+e-, and for e+e-, using a similar analysis procedure, and see the number of events predicted by the standard model. © 1992 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We have tested QED to fourth order in the coupling constant in the large-Q2 region by studying four-lepton final states in e+e- interactions with the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP (s=29 GeV). All four final-state particles were detected at large angles with respect to the beam axis. For an integrated luminosity of 205 pb-1, we observed ten e+e-e+e-, ten e+e-+-, and one events with opposite-charge pair masses greater than 1 GeV/c2. These events show good agreement with the complete 4 QED calculation. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We present a new high-statistics measurement of the cross section for the process e+e-e+e-+- at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV for invariant pion-pair masses M(+-) between 350 MeV/c2 and 1.6 GeV/c2. We observe the f2(1270) and measure its radiative width to be 3.15±0.04±0.39 keV. We also observe an enhancement in the +- spectrum near 1 GeV. General agreement is found with unitarized models of the +- reaction that include final-state interactions. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

The width is separately measured in the three reactions e+e-e+e-0+-,0; e+e-e+e-0+-; 0+-(0,), and e+e-e+e-0, giving a statistically weighted average two-photon width of=4.57±0.25±0.44 keV. As a byproduct of the study of the decay mode, we also measured the two-photon decay width of the a2(1320) as a2(1320)=1.03±0.13±0.21 keV. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We have searched for a heavy charged lepton with an associated neutrino of nearly the same mass in e+e- annihilation data taken with the Mark II detector at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV. In order to suppress contamination from conventional two-photon reactions, this analysis uses a novel, radiative-tagging technique. Requiring the presence of an isolated, energetic photon allows a search for lepton doublets with mass splittings smaller than that previously accessible to experiment. No evidence for such a new lepton doublet has been found, enabling limits to be placed on allowed mass combinations. Mass splittings as low as 250-400 MeV/c2 are excluded for charged-lepton masses between 500 MeV/c2 and 10 GeV/c2. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Data taken by the Mark II detector at the PEP storage ring was used to measure the rate of dilepton production in multihadronic events produced by e+e- annihilation at √s=29 GeV. We determine the probability that a hadron initially containing a b (b̄) quark decays to a positive (negative) lepton to be 0.17-0.08+0.15, with 90% confidence level limits of 0.06 and 0.38. © 1990.

Abstract

We report a measurement of the lifetime of the B0 meson based upon 29-GeV e+e- annihilation data taken with the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. The B0 mesons are tagged by their decays into D*- and D*+, where the D*- is tagged by its decay into -D 0. We reconstruct the decay vertices of 15 B0-meson candidates and measure the B0 lifetime to be 1.20-0.360.14+0.52+0.16 psec. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Data taken by the Mark II detector at the SLAC e+e- storage ring PEP was used to search for exclusive decays of D and B mesons into two charged leptons plus a charged pion or kaon. All possible charge and lepton combinations consistent with charge conservation were considered and no evidence for any signals was found. We obtain upper limits for the various branching ratios ranging from 2.5×10-3 to 9.2×10-3, at a 90% confidence level. Some of these limits can be used to constrain leptoquark masses in various models. © 1990 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The results of gamma-ray observations of the binary system HESS J0632 + 057 collected during 450 hr over 15 yr, between 2004 and 2019, are presented. Data taken with the atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes H.E.S.S., MAGIC, and VERITAS at energies above 350 GeV were used together with observations at X-ray energies obtained with Swift-XRT, Chandra, XMM-Newton, NuSTAR, and Suzaku. Some of these observations were accompanied by measurements of the H alpha emission line. A significant detection of the modulation of the very high-energy gamma-ray fluxes with a period of 316.7 +/- 4.4 days is reported, consistent with the period of 317.3 +/- 0.7 days obtained with a refined analysis of X-ray data. The analysis of data from four orbital cycles with dense observational coverage reveals short-timescale variability, with flux-decay timescales of less than 20 days at very high energies. Flux variations observed over a timescale of several years indicate orbit-to-orbit variability. The analysis confirms the previously reported correlation of X-ray and gamma-ray emission from the system at very high significance, but cannot find any correlation of optical H alpha parameters with fluxes at X-ray or gamma-ray energies in simultaneous observations. The key finding is that the emission of HESS J0632 + 057 in the X-ray and gamma-ray energy bands is highly variable on different timescales. The ratio of gamma-ray to X-ray flux shows the equality or even dominance of the gamma-ray energy range. This wealth of new data is interpreted taking into account the insufficient knowledge of the ephemeris of the system, and discussed in the context of results reported on other gamma-ray binary systems.

Abstract

We have made a detailed comparison of the charged-particle flow in three-jet events (e+e-qq»g) and radiative two-jet events (e+e-qq») from e+e- annihilation at Ec.m.=29 GeV. Accurate comparisons can be made because these two event types have similar topologies. In the angular region between the quark and antiquark jets, we observe substantially fewer charged tracks in the two-jet events than in the radiative three-jet events. © 1986 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The branching fraction for -5(0) is measured from data accumulated with the Mark II detector at PEP. Four events are observed with an estimated hadronic background of (0.03-0.02+0.04) events and a background from -30 of (0.05-0.04+0.07) events. This results in a measured branching fraction of (0.160.080.04)%. The candidate events are used to establish an upper limit of 125 MeV/c2 on the mass at the 95% confidence level. © 1985 The American Physical Society.

The fragmentation function has been measured and found to be in good agreement with the Lund-model prediction. production has been measured for the first time in high-energy e+e- annihilation. Abstract

We use data taken by the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP to study inclusive lepton production in e+e- annihilation at 29 GeV. From fits to the inclusive lepton momentum and transverse-momentum spectra we measure the semileptonic branching ratios for charm and bottom hadrons. We also determine with good precision the mean value of the bottom fragmentation function using both electron and muon samples. © 1988 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We report results of a search for events of the type e+e-jet+missing transverse momentum using the Mark II detector at PEP. Two candidate events were found, but both could come from known sources of background. A specific model for the origin of UA1 monojet events as the decay of a Z boson into two light Higgs bosons is eliminated by this search. © 1985 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The production of hyperons in e+e- annihilation has been measured as a function of their total momenta, transverse momenta, and the event thrust. The total production rate is 0.2130.0120.018 or per hadronic event. The observation of correlations in rapidity and angles for events with two detected decays supports fragmentation models with local baryon-number compensation. © 1985 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We have used a high-resolution drift chamber in the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP to measure the lifetime of leptons produced in e+e- annihilations at 29 GeV. Based on the flight-path distribution of 807 three-prong decays, the lifetime is found to be (2.880.16 0.17)×10-13 sec, in agreement with expectations for e - universality. © 1988 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The branching ratios for + and -(n0), n>~1, have been measured to be 0.078 0.005 0.008 and 0.047 ± 0.005 ± 0.008, respectively. The total three-prong tau branching ratio is 0.128 ± 0.005 ± 0.008. Study of the 3± decay indicates that the three pions are predominantly from a JP=1+ state which decays through a 0± intermediate state in a relative s wave. The mass spectrum is suggestive of a resonance. © 1986 The American Physical Society.

We have used an electronic tracking system to measure the lifetime of D0 mesons produced in e+e- annihilation at 29 GeV. Based on a sample of 27 events, the lifetime is found to be (4.2-1.0+1.3 1.0) × 10-13 s. © 1984 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We use data from the Mark II experiment at PEP to search for the process B→h0X for mh0 between 50 and 210 MeV/c2. No evidence for the Higgs boson is seen in this mass range. The limit obtained rules out the standard Higgs boson for masses between 70 and 210 MeV/c2 and significantly constrains extensions of the Higgs sector. © 1989.

Abstract

The Production has been investigated by the Mark II collaboration at the SLAC e+e- storage ring PEP. particles are reconstructed by their decay mode. The fragmentation function has been measured and found to be in good agreement with the Lund-model prediction. production has been measured for the first time in high-energy e+e- annihilation. Abstract

The decay modes with multiple neutral mesons in the final states have been studied with the Mark II detector at the SLAC storage ring PEP. The branching ratio for the decay mode - 20 is found to be consistent with the theoretical expectation. However, the branching ratio for - 30 is found to be inconsistent with the theoretical prediction unless there are other decay modes with multiple neutral mesons in the final states. © 1987 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We have used a high-resolution drift chamber in the Mark II detector at the SLAC e+e- storage ring PEP to measure the lifetimes of the D0 and D+ mesons produced in e+e- annihilations at 29 GeV. Based on a sample of 74 decays for the D0 mesons and 23 decays for the D+ mesons, the lifetimes are found to be &=(4.7-0.8+0.9) 0.5×10-13 sec and &=(8.9-2.7+3.8) 1.3×10-13 sec. This leads to a ratio of lifetimes &=1.9-0.7 0.3+0.9.. AE © 1986 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Four data sets collected with the Mark II detector during its operation at the SPEAR and PEP e+e- storage rings at SLAC are used to study the Bose-Einstein correlation between pairs and triplets of like-sign charged pions. The data sets represent four different regions of energy available for hadron production: the J at s =3.095 GeV, typical hadronic energy of 5 GeV in two-photon events, and annihilation in the energy regions s =47 GeV above the J, and s =29 GeV. The Bose-Einstein correlation is studied as a function of Q2, the four-momentum difference squared of the pair, and of Q32, an analogous quantity defined for triplets. After corrections for Coulomb effects and pion misidentification, pair analyses indicate a nearly full Bose-Einstein enhancement (1) in the J and the two-photon data, and about half the maximum value in the two higher-energy data sets. The pair analysis parameter r lies within a band of ±0.1 fm around 0.7 fm and is essentially the same for all four data sets. Pion triplet analyses give consistent results for the triplet parameters 3 and r3. In an attempt to investigate the shape of the pion source, we also study the Bose-Einstein correlation in pion pairs using two-dimensional distributions in components of Q2. © 1989 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

Multihadronic e+e- annihilation events at a center-of-mass energy of 29 GeV have been studied with both the original (PEP 5) Mark II and the upgraded Mark II detectors. Detector-corrected distributions from global shape analyses such as aplanarity, Q2-Q1, sphericity, thrust, minor value, oblateness, and jet masses, and inclusive charged-particle distributions including x, rapidity, p, and particle flow are presented. These distributions are compared with predictions from various multihadron event models which use leading-logarithmic shower evolution or QCD matrix elements at the parton level and string or cluster fragmentation for hadronization. The new generation of parton-shower models gives, on the average, a better description of the data than the previous parton-shower models. The energy behavior of these models is compared to existing e+e- data. The predictions of the models at a center-of-mass energy of 93 GeV, roughly the expected mass of the Z0, are also presented. © 1988 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We observe both the JPC=1++ f1(1285) and the JPC=0-+ (958) in tagged two-photon interactions and the (958) in untagged interactions. The measured Q2 dependence and decay distribution support the f1(1285) spin and parity assignment. The radiative width of the f1(1285) is measured as (M2/Q2)*=9.4±2.5±1.7 keV, on the assumption of a -pole form factor. © 1987 The American Physical Society.

Upper limits are given on the production of unstable neutral leptons in electron-positron annihilation at 29 GeV. The searches use selected two- and four-charged-particle events and are most sensitive to neutral-lepton masses of the order of 1 GeV/c2 and smaller. The production of hyperons in e+e- annihilation has been measured as a function of their total momenta, transverse momenta, and the event thrust. The total production rate is 0.2130.0120.018 or per hadronic event. The observation of correlations in rapidity and angles for events with two detected decays supports fragmentation models with local baryon-number compensation. © 1985 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The charged-particle multiplicities of hadronic events deriving from produced bottom or charm quarks have been measured in the Mark II detector at PEP in e+e- annihilation at 29 GeV. For events containing one semileptonic and one hadronic weak decay, we find multiplicities of 15.20.50.7 for bottom and 13.00.50.8 for charm. The corresponding multiplicities of charged particles accompanying the pair of heavy hadrons are 5.20.50.9 for bottom, and 8.10.50.9 for charm. © 1985 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

The branching fractions for the major decay modes of the lepton are measured from a sample of tagged decays selected from +- pairs produced in e+e- annihilation. The decay products of one member of the +- pair are used to identify the event. The opposite member of the pair is then included in the sample if it satisfies an invariant-mass cut and a charged-multiplicity cut. In this way, we attempt to select an unbiased sample of decays. The sample is divided into categories based on charged- and neutral-particle multiplicities, and charged-particle identification. The branching fractions are measured simultaneously, with an unfold technique and a maximum-likelihood fit, with the sum of the branching fractions constrained to be unity. The branching fractions for the decay modes - K- and - K*- are fixed at the world averages in the fit. The following branching fractions are measured: B(-e) =(19.10.81.1)%, B(-' - )=(18.30.90.8)%, B(-) =(10.01.1 *1,4)%, B(-0) =(25.81.72.5)%, B(-(n0, n>1))=(12.01.42.5)%, B(-+-) =(6.7 0.80.9)%, and B(-+- (n0,n>0)) =(6.10.80.9)%. The total branching fraction to one charged pion plus at least one neutral hadron is measured to be (37.81.21.0)%. Limits on allowed decay modes involving the meson are discussed. © 1987 The American Physical Society.

We have measured the K0+K0 inclusive cross section in e+e- annihilation at 29 GeV with the Mark II detector SLAC PEP. We find 1.270.030.15 K0+K0 per hadronic event. Abstract

The branching ratios for + and -(n0), n>~1, have been measured to be 0.078 0.005 0.008 and 0.047 ± 0.005 ± 0.008, respectively. The total three-prong tau branching ratio is 0.128 ± 0.005 ± 0.008. Study of the 3± decay indicates that the three pions are predominantly from a JP=1+ state which decays through a 0± intermediate state in a relative s wave. The mass spectrum is suggestive of a resonance. © 1986 The American Physical Society.

This paper presents a study of events produced in 29-GeV electron-positron annihilation in which there are just two noncollinear charged particles, no detected photons, and two or more undetected particles. These events can be explained by attributing them primarily to the reactions e+e-'e+e-e+e- and e+e-'e+e-+- where just two particles appear in the Mark II detector. Abstract

We have measured the branching fraction of -'-1/2 to be (22.3±0.6±1.4)% and the branching fraction of -'K*-1/2 to be (1.3±0.3±0.3)%. These values are consistent with the expectations for conventional decays of the . © 1986 The American Physical Society.

The cross section for the production of +- or K+K- pairs in interactions is measured for m between 1.7 and 3.5 GeV/c2 and for two intervals of center-of-mass scattering angle. Results are compared with predictions of a QCD model. © 1986 The American Physical Society.

Abstract

We confirm the observation of a spin-1 resonance at 1423 MeV in the KS0K± system produced in single-tagged two-photon interactions. The Dalitz plot indicates that this resonance decays primarily via a K*K intermediate state. We measure a radiative width times branching ratio BKK»(M2/Q2)*=3.2±1.4±0.6 keV on the assumption of a -pole form factor. © 1987 The American Physical Society.
