Previously unrecognized mafic and felsic plutonic rocks, formerly interpreted as an anatectic part of the amphibolite-eclogite Marianske Lazně Complex (MLC, Bohemian Massif) were examined together with a possible upper-crustal equivalent represented by the Cista pluton intruding continental crust farther east. These plutonic rocks were studied by whole-rock geochemistry (major and trace elements, Sr-Nd isotopes) and zircon U-Pb geochronology. The MLC magmatic rocks range from pyroxene-amphibole gabbro to trondhjemite and oligoclasite. The Cista pluton consists of porphyritic granitoids. The calc-alkaline nature of these rocks, relative enrichment of fluid-mobile elements (including large-ion lithophile elements), strong fractionation of light rare earth elements over heavy rare earth elements and depletion of high field strength elements are evidence for active margin magmatism. U-Pb zircon dating indicates that the magmatism was Mid-Devonian in both the MLC (ca. 385 Ma) and Cista pluton (ca. 390 up to ca. 365 Ma). Both magmatic units show inherited cores probably linked to recycling of crustal material. Sr-Nd isotopic compositions indicate that the gabbro formed from a depleted MORB mantle source composition with a small contribution of a subduction and crustal component. A three-stage geodynamic model is proposed: 1) ca. 390–380 Ma recycling of a high-pressure accretionary wedge and migration of arc melts into more distal parts of the upper continental plate, 2) ca. 380–370 Ma compression and thickening of the accretionary wedge-arc edifice, and 3) ca. 370–365 Ma development of a giant east-dipping detachment that reworked the whole edifice in the west and also involved emplacement of the supracrustal Cista pluton along antithetic west-dipping shear zone in the east. The studied magmatic rocks record a Mid-Devonian magmatic arc related to the formation of a subduction wedge stacked beneath the upper plate that was followed by formation of a second and independent Carboniferous continental arc further east.

Although they provide an important link between deep subduction and mid-crustal processes in the Saxothuringian Domain (Bohemian Massif), the medium to low-grade metasediments surrounding the well-documented (U)HP rocks of the Erzgebirge crystalline complex are scarcely studied. To constrain the Variscan evolution, the transition from the low-grade phyllites to the footwall medium-grade micaschists was investigated. Detailed geochronological (monazite U–Pb and mica 40Ar–39Ar dating), structural and petrological investigations, accompanied by thermodynamic modelling, were performed. We constrained the P–T conditions and timing of four deformation events (D1–D4) identified by structural analysis.The first M1-D1 event is characterized by HP–LT minerals (garnet, chloritoid, phengite, paragonite, and rutile) defining the S1 foliation. The calculated peak P–T conditions for M1 increase from 13 kbar and 520°C in phyllites to 25 kbar and 560°C in micaschists, suggesting a geothermal gradient of 6–11°C/km, typical for subduction environments. The M2-D2 event corresponds to the deformation and metamorphic overprint of the previous fabric during partial decompression. The M3-D3 event is mainly developed in micaschists and intensifies towards the footwall. It is accompanied by a subhorizontal S3 cleavage characterized by MP–MT assemblage bearing biotite, staurolite and ilmenite. The inferred peak P–T conditions for M3 are 5–9 kbar and 595°C representing a barrovian-type geothermal gradient from 17–30°C/km. Finally, all metamorphic fabrics were heterogeneously affected by the low-grade M4-D4 upright folding.Nine samples have been analyzed by in-situ monazite LASS ICP-MS geochronology. In phyllites, there is a prominent single group of ages around 350–340 Ma. In micaschists with intense M3 metamorphism, there are two groups of ages. The monazites located in the M3 matrix were dated at 330 Ma, while few grains in the garnet cores and within locally preserved M1 assemblages are older, around ~340 Ma. 40Ar–39Ar geochronology on micas was used to date 16 samples using step-heating and in-situ UV-laser ablation. The results are consistent with the monazite dating. The phyllites preserve ages spreading between 343–328 Ma, while in micaschists the ages cluster to ~330 Ma. The geochronological data revealed that at least part of the phyllites experienced burial and exhumation between 350–340 Ma, while the burial phase of micaschists is slightly younger (340–335 Ma). The strong M3 metamorphic overprint is restricted to micaschists and is dated around 330 Ma and interpreted as the exhumation, ductile thinning and final cooling of the wedge.The D1-D2 events (350–335 Ma) are interpreted to record the growth and evolution of the Saxothuringian orogenic wedge while its present-day architecture resulted from significant vertical shortening D3 associated with barrovian type metamorphism M3 (330 Ma) and ductile thinning. Altogether, a new tectonic model is proposed, in which the Erzgebirge part of the Saxothuringian Domain reveals a spectacular example of active margin evolution from the formation of accretionary prism to the building of the orogenic wedge by accretion of subducted continental crust and finally its extensional collapse.

The concept of detachment folding was developed between the '60s and '80s and generally describes displacement and buckling deformation of a competent layer above a weak, usually low viscosity horizon during tectonic shortening. From this definition, and based on the Biot-Ramberg theory, it is clear that geometrical parameters of such folds depend on contrasting rheology in both layers or on the rheological gradient in a complex multilayer. These systems were originally studied in association with the thin-skinned deformation and salt tectonics, and recently with regards to large-scale lithospheric deformation. In the latter, the rapidly heated lower crust is partially melted and a thin melt layer at the MOHO depth serves as the detachment horizon during collision and shortening. Our experimental work contributes to the understanding of the geometrical, kinematic and dynamic behaviour of such types of detachment folds as this deformation process strongly depends on a thermally dependent rheological gradient and nonlinear shortening velocity. The natural prototype for our models is for example the Chandmann or Bugat metamorphic domes in central Asia (CAOB). Our aim is to parametrize the style of such crustal-scale detachment folds depending on the rheological properties of the layered crust and the thermal gradient.For this purpose, we developed an apparatus for thermal analogue models capable of producing thermal gradients and programmable shortening. Paraffin wax is used as the analogue for the partially molten lower crust. The advantage of this material is, that it reproduces the temperature-controlled rheological stratification of the crust in hot orogens with a melt layer at the bottom (at Moho) superposed by partially molten crust. The upper crust is represented by a granular mixture of low-density cenosphere particles and silica sand, respectively. To keep the models properly dynamically scaled, we take into account the relationship for progressively decelerated plate convergence in the orogens. With increasing of both, basal heating and shortening rate, the folds' finite geometry converges to a system of pseudo-symmetric folds, cored by various amounts of the melt with respect to their position in the fold sequence. The dynamics of the fold amplification also depends on the position in the array of folds and is described by four evolutionary steps; initial perturbation, amplification with the melt inflow into axial zones of the folds, locking and simple vertical extrusion. With decreasing intensity of basal heating, the total melt amount is lower, deformation is more localized and converges to brittle-ductile coupling. Typical products are thrust systems on a local scale or pop-up structures on a large scale. Melt is localized in form of small fingers underneath the pop-up structures. Relatively colder and slower models display homogeneous thickening.A higher degree of heating results in melt redistributed along the axial planes of folds. Analysis of the layer interfaces curvature, paths and tortuosity of the material particles in these high-temperature experiments (based on resultant displacements calculated by the PIV method) also revealed asymmetrical evolution of the P-T-t paths for associated limbs of the pseudo-symmetrical folds.

The tectonometamorphic evolution of the peri-Siberian tract of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt is mainly characterized by Baikalian Late Proterozoic – Early Cambrian cycle related to amalgamation of Proterozoic oceanic and continent fragments to Siberain landmass. Here we present in-situ monazite geochronology linked to P−T modelling of micashischsts and migmatite gneisses at the northern part of the Precambrian Baydrag block (central Mongolia) previously considered as a part of Baikalian metamorphic belt. Garnet-sillimanite-kyanite gneiss records first burial to the sillimanite stability at ~725 °C and 6.5 kbar, followed by burial to the kyanite stability at ~650 °C and ~8 kbar. The garnet-staurolite schist records burial to the staurolite-stability at ~620 °C and 6 kbar, followed by a nearly isothermal burial to ~580 °C and 9 kbar. The monazite data yield a continuum of 207Pb-corrected 238U/206Pb dates of c. 926−768 Ma in the Grt−Sil−Ky gneiss, and c. 937−754 Ma in the Grt-St schist. Based on monazite textural positon and internal zoning, the time of prograde burial and peak under a thermal gradient of 28–32 °C/km is estimated at c. 870−890 Ma. It is not clear whether such high grade conditions prevailed until a phase of further burial under a geothermal gradient of 18–22 °C/km and dated at 800−820 Ma. Additionally, monazite with dates of c. 568−515 Ma occurs as whole grains or as rims with sharp boundaries on Grenvillean monazite in Grt-St schist testifying for minor Baikalian overprint. Metamorphic zircon rims with Th/U ratio ~0.01–0.06 in Grt−Sil−Ky gneiss with 877 ± 7 Ma age, together with lower intercepts of zircon discordia lines in both Grt-Sil-Ky gneiss and Grt-St schist further support the Tonian age of high grade metamorphism. The P−T and geochronology data show anticlockwise P−T evolution from c. 930 to 750 Ma which is interpreted as a result of thickening of supra-subduction extensional and hot edifice – probably of back arc or arc type. This kind of prograde metamorphism was so far described only on the northern part of the Tarim block and interpreted as a result of initiation of peri-Rodinian subduction of Mirovoi Ocean. Here, we further discuss geodynamic consequences of a unique discovery of Tonian metamorphism in term of tectonic switch related to initiation of peri-Rodinian oceanic subduction during supercontinent assembly followed by strong mechanical coupling potentially related to onset of Rodinia splitting.

A multidisciplinary approach integrating potential field analysis with geological and geochemical data provides new insights into the understanding of the crustal structure and evolution of the Mongolian collage. Magnetic and gravity data demonstrate the inconsistency between the geologically defined terranes and the geophysical domains in the southwestern part of the Mongolian collage. The combination of potential field analysis and modelling with whole rock geochemistry and isotopic mapping of Carboniferous–Permian granitoids indicates the presence of a homogeneous lower crust composed of a felsic to intermediate juvenile material beneath geophysically heterogeneous upper crust. This feature is interpreted as a result of a trench-directed lower crustal emplacement of an arc type crust underplating deformed Paleozoic oceanic crust. The potential field data also confirmed the occurrence of two orthogonal late Devonian and Permian–Triassic deformation upper crustal fabrics at the scale of the southwestern Mongolian collage. The prominent magnetic highs correspond to the tectono-metamorphic domains and magmatic provinces. The gravity anomalies highlight a periodicity of the signal correlating with alternating Permian–Triassic high and low strain zones, forming a zone of major deformation wrapping around the hinge of Mongolian orocline. The geometry and kinematics of dextral and sinistral transpressive faults are explained to result from the reactivation of Permian–Triassic deformation zones in the Cenozoic stress field.

The Mongolian Altai Zone is a part of the extensive Cambrian–Ordovician accretionary system located at the junction of the Siberian craton to the north and Tarim and North China cratons to the south. It extends approximately 2,000 km from Russia to Mongolia and represents one of the critical elements for reconstructing the early Paleozoic geodynamics of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). The studied section comprises a succession of deformed low- and high-grade metasedimentary rocks characterised by dominant terrigenous components mixed with volcanogenic material. The detrital zircons analysis revealed two separate groups a) more mature siliciclastic sediments (mostly sandstones) with maximum depositional age of Cambrian–Ordovician (ca. 463–489 Ma; zircon U-Pb) and b) more juvenile greywacke type sediments with Ordovician–Silurian (ca. 438–446 Ma; zircon U-Pb) maximum depositional age. U-Pb ages of detrital zircons show Cambrian-Ordovician (εHf(t) values –24.8 to +16.0) and Late Archean to Neoproterozoic source (εHf(t) values –35.5 to +10.4) and are interpreted as derived from the Ikh Mongol continental arc and the Baydrag continent. The greywackes, in addition, contain Silurian detrital zircons, with εHf(t) values from –0.5 to +13, suggesting syn-depositional contribution of juvenile material from a nearby magmatic arc. Both types of sediments are affected by Devonian (ca. 369–382 Ma; zircon U-Pb) metamorphism and magmatism granites, as well as stroingly reworked during the Permian (ca. 271–296; zircon U-Pb) under various metamorphic conditions. Late Devonian granitoids associated with felsic migmatites, and their zircon εHf(t) values from –9.5 to +13.5, indicate extensive melting of the sedimentary pile. A Permian high-temperature metamorphism is associated with granodiorite intrusions (εHf(t) values from –22.0 to +12.6) that contain Devonian zircon xenocrysts, suggesting melting of a Devonian source. The tectonic evolution of the Mongolian Altai Zone can be discretized in four events from which the first two were related to early Paleozoic metamorphic and magmatic evolution. The third one is associated with crustal-scale detachment that exhumed the early Permian migmatite-magmatite core complex in the south. The whole edifice was later affected by significant Permian-Triassic horizontal N-S shortening leading to juxtaposition of contrasting crustal levels thereby forming “apparent” terrane structure of the Mongolian Altai Zone. The whole edifice is interpreted as a Cambrian to Silurian fore-arc, affected by Devonian syn-extensional deep crustal melting. In addition,the Permian anatectic zone is interpreted as a deep part of an inverted continental rift.

Perpendicular or high-angle relationship of lineations is common in shear zones where synchronous fabric transposition and shearing occur. This paper documents a polyphase early-Variscan structural record exposing the transition from orogenic superstructure to infrastructure along a major detachment shear zone at the western margin of the Tepla–Barrandian domain, Bohemian Massif. On the scale of tens of kilometers this region shows major but continuous reorientation of S2/S3 intersection lineation from its NNE–SSW trends in the superstructure to the ESE–WNW trends in the infrastructure. A simple kinematic numerical model, which allows deformation parameters such as fabric attractor, deformation symmetry, and proportion of simple shear, to be varied, was formulated to explain the rotation of fabrics observed in the field. In line with the results of our kinematic modelling, these rotations are interpreted as a result of progressive transposition of the originally subvertical S2 foliation into the gently SE-dipping S3 marked by stretching at high angle to the incipient S2–S3 intersection. The mineral–fabric relations suggest that the S2 was associated with crustal thickening and is well preserved in the superstructure, while S3 was associated with exhumation of deeper parts of the infrastructure. The kinematic model confirmed the operation of major detachment shear zone and allowed a set of the most probable deformation parameters leading to successful simulation of the fabric geometries to be identified. In addition, the successful model parameters were used to restore the vertical structure of the studied region prior to exhumation on the basis of available pressure–temperature data. We believe that unlike the commonly used balanced cross-section restoration, our restoration technique can be successfully applied in orogen interiors if the mineral–fabric relations are well-constrained and high-quality pressure–temperature estimates exist.

The PIV (particle image velocimetry) method became a standard tool for the calculation of displacement fields in physical geodynamic models. For understanding the deformation dynamics of geodynamic models, in our study, we implemented several post-processing algorithms on the derived displacement field and calculated the velocity and strain(-rate) components, such as the divergence of the velocity field, vorticity and shear strain-rate. In the model of oroclinal buckling, we focused on strain analysis of the upper crust and correlated the shear strain-rate, vorticity and divergence anomalies with visual deformation patterns in the upper crust. The divergence of velocity fields in these models correspond to the pop-up and pop-down belts oriented along the axial trace of the oroclinal bends. High shear strain-rate domains correlate with horizontal, isovolumic shear zones alongside these belts, while vorticity shows rotational trend of fold axial traces of the pop-up and pop-down belts, around orocline inflection. In another series of models, we simulated the development of melt-cored crustal scale detachment folds and employed the same set of parameters to investigate the ductile deformation visible in side-view of the model domain. We developed a method that allows tracing the divergence in subcells locked on target subdomains. We tracked and quantified melt flow between the melt source area at the bottom of the model and progressively developing folds. This mass transfer analysis revealed polyphase fold evolution, where initial fold perturbations quickly amplify as the melt accumulates in the triangular hinge sector below and between the rotating fold limbs. While the early amplification leads to decompression driving the melt into the hinge zone area between the limbs, the fold lock-up stage and continued attenuation of the vertical limbs is associated with melt expulsion from the fold interlimb domain back into the source layer, where it can be transferred laterally to the foreland.

International audience; We present a new analogue model of oroclinal buckling, which is based on recent advances in our geological understanding of the Mongolian orocline in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt. The model simulates an amplification of a preexisting, gently arcuated accretionary system. In the analogue models, we established three neighboring subdomains that represent contrasting lithospheric domains separated by a steep “subduction” interface. The shortening of the model is parallel to the pseudo-linear interface between these subdomains and produces two different deformation patterns in the amplified interlimb areas of the orocline. We used analogue modelling techniques to investigate both the flow of a ductile lithosphere and the brittle deformation of an upper crust that is associated with the development of an orocline. The modelling results show that: (1) two types of regional-scale folds develop both of which are upright. The largest are steeply plunging oroclines and the smaller have sub-horizontal axes; (2) the overall deformation distribution displays significant thickening/thinning and exhumation of the lower ductile layers with variations of upward transfer of crustal material; (3) the hinge regions of the two adjacent oroclines studied consist of different materials, one contains oceanic and the other felsic lower crustal rocks. It is found that the geometry of the lithosphere beneath the two regions is very different; (4) the geometry of the orocline is non-cylindrical and exhibits an increasing plunge of fold axes when traced from the upper-crust to deeper lithospheric layers. The resulting model is used to geophysically constrain deep crustal structures and surface deformation patterns in Mongolia.

The classical concept of collisional orogens suggests that mountain belts form as a crustal wedge between the downgoing and overriding plates. However, this orogenic style is not compatible with the presence of (ultra-)high pressure crustal and mantle rocks far from the plate interface in the Bohemian Massif of Central Europe. Here we use a comparison between geological observations and thermo-mechanical numerical models to explain their formation. We suggest that continental crust was first deeply subducted, then flowed laterally underneath the lithosphere and eventually rose in the form of large partially molten trans-lithospheric diapirs. We further show that trans-lithospheric diapirism produces a specific rock association of (ultra-)high pressure crustal and mantle rocks and ultra-potassic magmas that alternates with the less metamorphosed rocks of the upper plate. Similar rock associations have been described in other convergent zones, both modern and ancient. In the easternmost part of the European Variscan collisional belt, the Bohemian Massif, strongly metamorphosed felsic rocks crop out at several locations in a current distance of up to several hundreds of kilometers from the supposed contact of the subducting and overriding plates. These rocks were interpreted to originate from the subducting plate (now the Saxothuringian domain), which means that the orogenic root (the Moldanubian domain) consists of rocks that originate from both upper and lower plate. More specifically, the root domain is composed of (U)HP granulites and orthogneiss, garnet peridotites, eclogites and ultra-potassic plutons that alternate with the less metamorphosed rocks of the upper plate.Such a process of subduction and emplacement of the subducted crust into the upper plate is called relamination. In order to better constrain the dynamics of relamination, we set up a numerical thermal-mechanical model and compare the modeling results with the data from the Bohemian Massif. The model simulates oceanic and continental subduction and takes into account non-linear visco-plastic rheology, percolation of fluids, melting and melt extraction. For different parameter values, the models show different styles of behavior, namely (i) exhumation of the subducted crust along the plate interface, and (ii) flow of the subducted crust beneath the upper plate and then incorporation into its crust (i.e. relamination).In the former case, the material records heterogeneous peak metamorphism sampling the conditions along the subduction zone, and cooling during decompression. Similar features are typical for the metamorphic complex in the Saxothuringian domain of the Bohemian Massif.In the latter case, the typical feature is the development of diapirs that grow from the subducted continental crust, pierce the overlying lithosphere and intrude into the middle crust of the upper plate. We show that growth of such trans-lithospheric diapirs results in a similar rock assemblage as observed in the orogenic root in the Bohemian Massif. The pressure-temperature-time paths obtained in the modeled diapirs mimic those of the Moldanubian granulites. The flow of crustal material through the mantle wedge results into mixing, hydration of the mantle and melting of both materials. Emplacement of the resulting melt into crust can explain formation of the Moldanubian ultra-potassic plutons.

The Erzgebirge dome, exposing Proterozoic - Early Palaeozoic metagranitoids and metasedimentary rocks of the Saxothuringian domain in the Bohemian Massif, is formed by a tectonic stack of several UHP-HP and HT units exhumed during Variscan continental subduction-collision process. A systematic study of orthogneiss deformation microstructures carried out on a regional scale has been done to evaluate the extent and relative structural position of these units in the subduction complex. Five different microstructural types have been distinguished, revealing two overprinting sequences with 1) coarse grained microstructures in the parautochthonous Kateřina-Reitzenhain unit and 2) finer grained microstructures in the allochthonous HP-HT Gneiss Eclogite Unit. P-T conditions of the individual overprinting microstructures calculated by conventional thermobarometry suggest continuous deformation during exhumation along two contrasting P-T paths. The warmer one in the parautochthonous unit showed exhumation from ~13.5 kbar and ~820 °C to ~3 kbar and ~500 °C while the colder one in the allochthonous unit showed exhumation from ~16 kbar and ~740 °C to ~3 kbar and ~400 °C. The overprinting microstructures are associated with vertical shortening interpreted as ductile thinning. This deformation started at depths of ~10 kbar and led to a temporal elevation of the crustal heat flow affecting the exhumation P-T paths of the structurally deeper units. We propose a model of continuous underplating of the former accretionary wedge by deeply subducted and exhumed continental material building up the orogenic wedge. Progressive heating of the orogenic wedge is explained by heat advection related to fast exhumation of the UHP/HP-HT units from the subduction channel followed by ductile thinning.

A polyphase tectono-metamorphic evolution of the Mongolian tract of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is inferred from a structural, petrological and geochronological study in the Hovd Zone at the NE periphery of the Altai Domain. Four tectonic events are recorded here. A relict sub-vertical fabric (S1) is associated with the growth of garnet cores and staurolite, typical of MP–MT Barrovian-type metamorphism (M1). This fabric was isoclinally folded and overprinted by sub-horizontal foliation (S2) associated with growth of garnet rims, sillimanite and cordierite, typical of LP–HT metamorphism (M2). The P–T path inferred from petrology and thermodynamic modelling shows that the peak conditions reached 590–610 °C and c. 5.8 kbar (M1) and were followed by decompression to 4–5 kbar associated with heating to 630–690 °C (M2). Subsequently, the studied region was strongly reworked by NW–SE trending upright folds (F3) locally associated with development of muscovite- and chlorite-bearing cleavage (S3). The region is weakly affected by post-metamorphic D4 overprint. Monazite in-situ electron-microprobe dating was complemented by LA–ICP-MS U–Pb dating, revealing three distinct texturally defined age groups at c. 455, 435 and 385 Ma. The ages at c. 455 Ma are related with monazite included in garnet cores, the age group at c. 435 Ma with monazite in garnet rims and in S2 foliation, while the ages of c. 385 Ma come mostly from monazite in chlorite–muscovite-bearing bands. Based on the monazite textural position and REE patterns, these ages are correlated with the tectono-metamorphic events D1–D3, reflecting short-lived Late Ordovician shortening, prolonged Middle Silurian–Early Devonian extension and Late Devonian–Early Carboniferous compression, respectively. Alternation of shortening and extension periods is interpreted as being caused by tectonic switching, i.e. repeated alternation of advancing and retreating subduction regimes. The latest Permian event resulted from the collision of the Mongolian orogenic collage with the Tarim and North China cratons in the south and caused rotation of previous fabrics to the current configuration.

Neoproterozoic to early Paleozoic accretionary processes of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt have been evaluated so far mainly using the geology of ophiolites and/or magmatic arcs. Thus, the knowledge of the nature and evolution of associated sedimentary prisms remains fragmentary. We carried out an integrated geological, geochemical and zircon U–Pb geochronological study on a giant Ordovician metasedimentary succession of the Mongolian Altai Mts. This succession is characterized by dominant terrigenous components mixed with volcanogenic material. It is chemically immature, compositionally analogous to graywacke and marked by significant input of felsic to intermediate arc components, pointing to an active continental margin depositional setting. Detrital zircon U–Pb ages suggest a source dominated by products of early Paleozoic magmatism prevailing during the Cambrian–Ordovician and culminating at ca. 500 Ma. We propose that the Ordovician succession forms an ‘Altai sedimentary wedge’, the evolution of which can be linked to the geodynamics of the margins of the Mongolian Precambrian Zavhan-Baydrag blocks. This involved subduction reversal from southward subduction of a passive continental margin (early Cambrian) to the development of the ‘Ikh-Mongol Magmatic Arc System’ and the giant ‘Altai sedimentary wedge’ above a north-dipping subduction zone (Late Cambrian–Ordovician). Such a dynamic process resembles the tectonic evolution of the peri-Pacific accretionary Terra Australis Orogen. A new model reconciling the Baikalian metamorphic belt along the southern Siberian Craton with peri-Pacific Altai accretionary systems fringing the Mongolian microcontinents is proposed to explain the Cambro–Ordovician geodynamic evolution of the Mongolian collage system.

Granitoid magmatism and its role in differentiation and stabilization of the Paleozoic accretionary wedge in the Chinese Altai are evaluated in this study. Voluminous Silurian-Devonian granitoids intruded a greywacke-dominated Ordovician sedimentary succession (the Habahe Group) of the accretionary wedge. The close temporal and spatial relationship between the regional anatexis and the formation of granitoids, as well as their geochemical similarities including rather unevolved Nd isotopic signatures and the strong enrichment of large-ion lithophile elements relative to many of the high field strength elements, may indicate that the granitoids are product of partial melting of the accretionary wedge rocks. Whole-rock geochemistry and pseudosection modeling show that regional anatexis of fertile sediments could have produced a large amount of melts compositionally similar to the granitoids. Such process could have left a high-density garnet- and/or garnet-pyroxene granulite residue in the deep crust, which can be the major reason for the gravity high over the Chinese Altai. Our results show that melting and crustal differentiation can transform accretionary wedge sediments into vertically stratified and stable continental crust. This may be a key mechanism contributing to the peripheral continental growth worldwide.

Hf values of +7.4 to +11.5. The latter suggest an exclusively juvenile, depleted mantle-derived magma source. According to calculated P–T conditions, we propose three main stages in the Sagsai Pluton evolution. The gabbro started to grow at >1000 °C and 0.8–0.9 GPa. The ensuing magma mixing with crustal melts and final crystallization of gabbro occurred at similar P–T conditions (740–830 °C and 0.5–0.6 GPa) as partial melting of migmatite xenoliths in the Sagsai Pluton. The P–T conditions of the Sagsai Pluton final emplacement calculated from quartz syenite (c. 600 to 670 °C and 0.4–0.5 GPa) are consistent with the mineral assemblage in the contact aureole (cordierite–biotite and biotite–chlorite schists). The magmatic evolution of Sagsai Pluton confirms a model of deep lithosphere thermal anomaly associated with heterogeneous melting of crust in a post-subduction extensional regime, perhaps shortly after the slab break-off.

The European Variscan orogeny can be compared to the Tibetan-Himalayan system for three main reasons: (1) The Variscan belt originated through progressive amalgamation of Gondwanan blocks that were subsequently squeezed between the Laurussia and Gondwana continents. Similarly, the Tibetan-Himalayan orogen results from amalgamated Gondwanan blocks squeezed between Asia and India. (2) The duration of the collisional period and the scale of the two orogens are comparable. (3) In both cases the collisional process resulted in formation of a thick crustal root and long lasting high-pressure granulite facies metamorphism. Recent petrological data allow a more detailed comparison pointing to similarities also in the midcrustal re-equilibration of the granulites and their association with specific (ultra)potassic magmatic rocks. In both orogens, the origin of the granulites was attributed to relamination and thermal maturation of lower crustal allochthon below upper plate crust. Subsequent evolution was explained by midcrustal flow eventually leading to extrusion of the high-grade rocks. We propose that the lower and middle crustal processes in hot orogens are connected by gravity overturns. Such laterally forced gravity-driven exchanges of material in the orogenic root were already documented in the Variscides, but the recent data from Tibet and Himalaya show that this process may have occurred also elsewhere. Using numerical models, we demonstrate that the exchange of the lower and middle crust can be efficient even for a minor density inversion and various characteristics of the crustal layers. The modeled pressure-temperature paths are compatible with two-stage metamorphism documented in Tibet and Himalaya.

Baaran and Baytag “terranes” form important part of the Trans-Altai Zone of the Central Asian Orogenic Belt in the SW Mongolia. The Trans-Altai Zone represents an oceanic domain built by Ordovician to Devonian ophiolites covered by Devonian–Carboniferous oceanic sediments. This oceanic assemblage was intruded by a spectrum of Carboniferous volcanic rocks ranging from basalts to rhyolites (325.6 ± 1.4 Ma to 351.0 ± 5.9 Ma; LA-ICP-MS U–Pb dating on zircon) that display similar whole-rock trace-element and Sr–Nd isotopic signatures regardless their silica contents and the “terrane” they belong to. They are normal-K calc-alkaline rocks whose NMORB-normalized multielement patterns show an arc-like enrichment in LILE (Large Ion Lithophile Elements) and deep negative TNT (Ta, Nb, Ti) anomalies. Based on the relatively high Nb/Yb and Th/Yb ratios, the arc was probably formed on immature continental rather than typical oceanic crust. Low (87Sr/86Sr)i (0.7043–0.7047), high e Nd 350 (+5.2 to = +5.8) and the observed in-situ Hf isotopic variation in dated zircons ( e Hf t = +7.4 to +13) are all attributed to a partial melting of primitive and youthful (Neoproterozoic–Ordovician) arc-type lower continental crust (metamorphosed intermediate–acid igneous rocks and/or arc-derived greywackes), augmented with, and most likely facilitated by, contemporaneous arc-related basaltic intrusions. A distinct possibility remains the previously formulated model assuming that the Carboniferous magmatism in Gobi-Altai and Trans-Altai zones sampled the juvenile Neoproterozoic to Cambrian arc crust relaminated under the Ordovician–Devonian oceanic crust. In any case, the studied arc association, together with lithological sequence of ophiolites, can be closely correlated with the Dulate arc in eastern Junggar. It is proposed that the two arc sequences form a single belt, c. 500 km long, that represents one of the main known arc structures in the Central Asian Orogenic Belt.

Lu-Hf and Sm-Nd garnet-whole rock geochronology combined with petrographic observations, minero-chemical variations, thermodynamic modelling and structural data was used to constrain the P–T–t–d evolution of eclogites from the Marianske Lazně Complex (Bohemian Massif). Boudins of mostly isotropic eclogite with relict steep eclogite-facies fabric are affected by steep migmatitic foliation, which is followed on a regional scale by the development of almost pervasive, predominantly SE-dipping, extensional foliation. The structural succession shows continuous transition from eclogite to garnetiferous migmatitic amphibolite and to amphibolite migmatite. A least retrogressed sample of eclogite shows clusters of fine-grained inclusion-poor garnet, omphacite relicts surrounded by a fine-grained clinopyroxene-plagioclase symplectite with minor amphibole, biotite-plagioclase intergrowths after white mica, kyanite with plagioclase-spinel coronas and accessory rutile. Rare potassic white mica occurs as inclusions in omphacite. A more retrogressed eclogite, with no omphacite or kyanite relicts, contains inclusion-poor garnet surrounded by amphibole-plagioclase corona in a matrix dominated by plagioclase-amphibole symplectite with minor clinopyroxene. In places, the symplectite is overgrown by coarse-grained amphibole. Peak P–T conditions, inferred from combined conventional thermobarometry and phase-equilibria modelling and based on inclusions of white mica (up to 3.33 Si p.f.u.), matrix omphacite (Jd33–36) and garnet core (Alm33–38Prp38–42Grs22–25Sps1) compositions are ~25 kbar at 650–750 °C. A HT overprint occurred at ~14–18 kbar and >800 °C based on coexisting clinopyroxene (Jd18–24), plagioclase (An18–35), and amphibole (Na(B) Lu-Hf and Sm-Nd garnet geochronology has been applied to both samples, an older age (c. 390 Ma) obtained by the Lu-Hf method is interpreted as the timing of HP metamorphism, while c. 15 Ma younger ages were obtained by the Sm-Nd method. As temperatures for the HT overprint exceed the empirically and experimentally determined closure temperature of the Sm-Nd system the Sm-Nd ages are interpreted to date cooling following the HT overprint. Combined together, contrasting eclogite and amphibolite-facies migmatite fabrics, the mineral textures, calculated P–T conditions, and distinct Lu-Hf and Sm-Nd ages, provide a complete P–T–t–D path characterised by rapid (~15 Ma) transition from HP subduction, crustal thickening to extensional HT shearing. This unconventional exhumation path does not fit to models of monocyclic exhumation in a subduction channel proposed for the Munchberg and ZEV Devonian HP units to the west. In contrast, the post-peak extensional low angle shearing shortly after subduction and collision resembles more the geodynamic model typical for the Iberian subduction system both in time scales and sequence of tectonic events.

The Khantaishir Magmatic Complex (KMC) (south–central Mongolia) exposes a section of a magmatic system consisting of deep crustal, ultramafic cumulates (coarse-grained Amp gabbros and hornblendites; c. 0.35–0.5 GPa) to shallower crustal levels dominated by Amp–Bt tonalites ( c. 0.1–0.2 GPa). The magmatic rocks were emplaced during most of the Cambrian ( c. 538–495 Ma) and are mostly geochemically primitive (Mg# ~ 50), Na-rich and metaluminous. The (normal-) calc-alkaline signature and characteristic trace-element enrichment in hydrous-fluid mobile large-ion lithophile elements (LILE) relative to high-field strength elements (HFSE) suggest an origin within a magmatic arc. Multiple intrusions of basic magma derived from a subduction-modified depleted mantle developed by fractional crystallization and/or accumulation of (Ol, Cpx) Amp + Bt, later joined by Pl. Magma mixing with, or without, exchange of xenocrysts between compositionally dissimilar melt batches was also important. Over time, partial melting of older, lower crustal metabasic rocks became increasingly significant, again with a strong subduction signature. The lack of zircon inheritance in the magmatic products and rather high zircon e Hf t values (all >+3, but for most samples > +8) as well as whole-rock Sr–Nd isotopic compositions imply that the arc was not founded on mature continental crust. It was probably located at the margin of the Baydrag microcontinent, dominated by accreted metabasic rocks of an older (early Tonian?) island arc covered by a thin layer of subordinate metasediments containing detrital zircons with Tonian and ill-defined Palaeoproterozoic ages. The KMC represents a small vestige of an extensive Cambrian–Ordovician subduction system (termed here the Ikh-Mongol Arc System), bordering the western margin of a chain of Precambrian microcontinents (Tuva-Mongolia, Zabkhan and Baydrag) that, together with accreted Neoproterozoic marginal basins (the Lake Zone), defines the external part of the Mongolian orocline.

Paleomagnetic investigations of Early Permian and Triassic magmatic rocks from Catalan Coastal Ranges provide three magnetic directions which are interpreted as primary magnetizations and partly as overprints. The succession of magnetic directions is interpreted in terms of a succession of large-scale clockwise rotations, which bring the whole assembly of Pyrenees, Catalonia, Corsica-Sardinia and Maures-Esterel massifs from the southeast of the Massif Central to the west during Permian. This major movement is associated with clockwise rotation of northern limb of the Iberian orocline during Latest Carboniferous and Early Permian (~ 305–290 Ma). Subsequently, Permian large-scale dextral transtensional–extensional shearing operated along Aquitanian Shear Belt between the Massif Central in the northeast and the Iberian Variscan massifs in the southwest. The latest phase of the rotation in the Late Permian-Early Triassic is associated with alkaline magmatism probably linked to Neo-Tethys opening activity in Western Europe.

International audience; Sodic metasomatites (albitites) occur around and within siderite veins in the southern part of the Gemeric tectonic unit of the Western Carpathians. Accessory minerals of the metasomatites represented by monazite, zircon, apatite, rutile, tourmaline and siderite are basically identical with the quartz-tourmaline stage of other siderite and stibnite veins of the tectonic unit. Statistical analysis of chemical Th-U(total)-Pb isochron method (CHIME) of monazite dating yielded Jurassic-Cretaceous ages subdivided into 3–4 modes, spreading over time interval between 78 and 185 Ma. In contrast, LA-ICPMS 206Pb/238U dating carried out on the same monazite grains revealed a narrow crystallization interval, showing ages of Th-poor cores with phengite inclusions identical within the error limit with Th-rich rims with cauliflower-like structure. The determined lower intercept at 139 ± 1 Ma overlapped the Vallanginian-Berriasian boundary, thus corroborating the model of formation of hydrothermal vein structures within an arcuate deformation front built up in the Variscan basement as a response to Early Cretaceous compression, folding and thrusting. In contrast, associated zircons are considerably older than the surrounding Early-Palaeozoic volcano-sedimentary rocks, showing Neoproterozoic ages. The zircon grains in albitite metasomatites are thus interpreted as fragments of Pan-African magmatic detritus incorporated in the vein structures by buoyant hydrothermal fluids.

The Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) in southern Mongolia consists of E-W trending Neoproterozoic cratons and Silurian-Devonian oceanic tectonic zones. Previous study revealed that the Early Paleozoic accretionary wedge and the oceanic tectonic zone are underlain by a layer giving a homogeneous gravity signal. Forward gravity modelling suggests that this layer is not formed of high-density material typical of lower oceanic crust but is composed of low- to intermediate-density rocks resembling continental crust. The nature of this lower crust is constrained by the whole-rock geochemistry and zircon Hf isotopic signature of abundant Late Carboniferous high-K calc-alkaline and Early Permian A-type granitoids intruding the two Early Paleozoic domains. It is possible to explain the genesis of these granitoids by anatexis of juvenile, metaigneous (tonalitic-gabbroic) rocks of Late Cambrian age, the source of which is presumed to lie in the “Khantaishir” arc (520–495 Ma) further north. In order to test this hypothesis, the likely modal composition and density of Khantaishir arc-like protoliths are thermodynamically modelled at granulite- and higher amphibolite-facies conditions. It is shown that the current average density of the lower crust inferred by gravity modelling (2730 ± 20 kg/m3) matches best metamorphosed leucotonalite to diorite. Based on these results, it is now proposed that Mongolian CAOB has an architecture in which the accretionary wedge and oceanic upper crust is underlain by allochthonous lower crust that originated in a Cambrian arc. A tectonic model explaining relamination of allochthonous felsic to intermediate lower crust beneath mafic upper crust is proposed.

Viscosity contrasts displayed in flow structures of a mountain namakier (Kuh-e-Namak - Dashti), between ‘weak’ second phase bearing rock salt and ‘strong’ pure rock salt types are studied for deformation mechanisms using detailed quantitative microstructural study. While the solid inclusions rich (“dirty”) rock salts contain disaggregated siltstone and dolomite interlayers, “clean” salts reveal microscopic hematite and remnants of abundant fluid inclusions in non-recrystallized cores of porphyroclasts. Although the flow in both, the recrystallized “dirty” and “clean” salt types is accommodated by combined mechanisms of pressure-solution creep (PS), grain boundary sliding (GBS), transgranular microcracking and dislocation creep accommodated grain boundary migration (GBM), their viscosity contrasts observed in the field outcrops are explained by: 1) enhanced ductility of “dirty” salts due to increased diffusion rates along the solid inclusion-halite contacts than along halite–halite contacts, and 2) slow rates of intergranular diffusion due to dissolved iron and inhibited dislocation creep due to hematite inclusions for “clean” salt types Rheological contrasts inferred by microstructural analysis between both salt rock classes apply in general for the “dirty” salt forming Lower Hormuz and the “clean” salt forming the Upper Hormuz of the Hormuz Formation and imply strain rate gradients or decoupling along horizons of mobilized salt types of different composition and microstructure.

New geological, geochemical and geochronological data characterize architecture and geodynamic evolution of the southern Baydrag continental margin in Mongolia. The structurally deepest Zamtyn Nuruu Complex is composed of highly deformed orthogneisses and amphibolites intruded by syn-tectonic diorites and gabbros. Geochemical affinity of the amphibolites varies from continental-arc to within-plate tholeiites, while the Grenvillean (948 ± 6 and 941 ± 11 Ma) orthogneisses show features typical of magmatic-arc origin. The syn-metamorphic gabbros and diorites intruded coevally with the regional thermal event at 542 ± 4 Ma. Zircon Hf isotope and whole-rock geochemical data point to a primitive source of mafic rocks, most likely formed in Early Cambrian arc developed on Grenvillean basement. The overlying Alag Khadny subduction melange contains eclogites and amphibolites with MORB affinity while lenses of orthogneisses (953 ± 12 Ma: zircon, 939 ± 5 Ma: monazite) reveal late- to post-collisional signature. The subduction event is dated by zircon at ca. 538 ± 20 Ma. The matrix of the melange consists of metapelites and carbonates, most likely fragments of Neoproterozoic to Early Cambrian carbonate platform scrapped off the subducting plate during the mid-Cambrian accretion. The hanging-wall Khan-Taishir–Erdene Uul ophiolite is formed by Neoproterozoic pillow lavas, red cherts and associated ultramafic rocks, with gabbros dated at 973 ± 12 Ma. Taken together, the new data allow placing south Mongolian continental fragments into a geodynamic model of Rodinia formation, fragmentation and Palaeo-Pacific subduction initiation. The Zamtyn Nuruu Grenvillean arc is interpreted as a result of Mirovoi Ocean subduction beneath Rodinian margin, while the Early Cambrian diorites and gabbros testify initiation of supra-subduction magmatism of Palaeo-Pacific plate beneath continental fragment of Gondwanan, most likely Tarim affinity. These two events were separated by the development of Neoproterozoic passive margin probably associated with Rodinia fragmentation.

Most of granulite terrains worldwide are characterized by large mean grain sizes of 1 mm or more. An important exception are the high-pressure felsic granulites in the Bohemian Massif, the European Variscan belt. There, recrystallization of original coarse-grained ternary feldspar led to formation of a fine-grained (∼100 μm) mixed matrix dominated by plagioclase and K-feldspar. This change occurred at temperatures of ∼850 °C and was probably caused by chemically induced decomposition related to slight cooling and enhanced by deformation during continental collision. The resulting microstructure shows indications of diffusion creep assisted by melt-enhanced grain-boundary sliding. Further on, minor coarsening occurred associated with deformation by dislocation creep and aggregation of mineral phases. Using a thermodynamics-based model of grain size evolution we show that stability of the fine-grained microstructure crucially depends on Zener pinning in the two-phase mineral matrix. Pinning efficiently hinders grain growth, and the small grain size that resulted from the ternary feldspar decomposition can be stable even at high temperatures. The late switch from the grain-size-sensitive creep to dislocation creep is rather difficult to explain by temperature and strain rate (or stress) changes only. However, a simple incorporation of melt solidification can successfully simulate this behavior. Alternatively, the switch and the associated grain size growth can be related to mineral phase aggregation at lower pressure–temperature conditions resulting into a decrease of pinning efficiency. This study suggests that the fine grain size of the Bohemian granulites, in contrast to the common coarse-grained type, stems from abrupt recrystallization during the high-pressure high-temperature conditions, and pinning in the fine-grained matrix. Such a process may in some cases significantly and suddenly reduce the strength of the lower continental crust and allow for its efficient redistribution.

Rift-related regional metamorphism of passive margins is usually difficult to observe on the surface, mainly due to its strong metamorphic overprint during the subsequent orogenic processes that cause its exposure. However, recognition of such a pre-orogenic evolution is achievable by careful characterization of the polyphase tectono-metamorphic record of the orogenic upper plate. A multidisciplinary approach, involving metamorphic petrology, P–T modelling, structural geology and in-situ U-Pb monazite geochronology using laser-ablation split-stream inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, was applied to unravel the polyphase tectono-metamorphic record of metapelites at the western margin of the Tepla-Barrandian domain in the Bohemian Massif. The study resulted in discovery of three tectono-metamorphic events. The oldest event M1 is LP–HT regional metamorphism with a geothermal gradient between 30 and 50°C km−1, peak temperatures up to 650°C and of Cambro-Ordovician age (c. 485 Ma). The M1 event was followed by M2-D2, which is characterized by a Barrovian sequence of minerals from biotite to kyanite and a geothermal gradient of 20–25°C km−1. D2-M2 is associated with a vertical fabric S2, and was dated as Devonian (c. 375 Ma). Finally, the vertical fabric S2 was overprinted by a D3-M3 event that formed sillimanite- to chlorite- bearing gently inclined fabric S3 also of Devonian age. The high geothermal gradient of the M1 event can be explained as the result of an extensional, rift-related tectonic setting. Additionally, restoration of the deep architecture and polarity of the extended domain before the Devonian history–together with the supracrustal sedimentary and magmatic record–lead us to propose a model for formation of an Ordovician passive continental margin. The subsequent Devonian evolution is interpreted as horizontal shortening of the passive margin at the beginning of Variscan convergence, followed by detachment-accommodated exhumation of lower-crustal rocks. Both Devonian shortening and detachment occurred in the upper plate of a Devonian subduction zone. The tectonic evolution presented in this paper modifies previous models of the tectonic history of the western margin of the Tepla-Barrandian domain, and also put constraints on the evolution of the southern margin of the Rheic ocean from the passive margin formation to the early phases of Variscan orogeny. International audience; A structural and geochronological 40Ar/39Ar study was performed in kilometre-scale middle and lower crustal lens-shaped domains dominated by a preserved subvertical foliation, surrounded by horizontally foliated migmatites. These domains occur within the Moldanubian nappe overlying the Brunia microcontinent at the eastern margin of the European Variscides. Three main deformation phases were recognized: subvertical S2 fabric trending NW–SE in lower crustal rocks and NE–SW in mid-crustal rocks. It is reworked by HT/MT horizontal fabric S3 along margins of crustal domains and in surrounding migmatites. S3 bears a prolate NE lineation parallel to the S2–S3 intersection in the lower crustal domain. In the middle crustal units, L3 is weak, connected to oblate strain and trends NE–SW parallel to the S2–S3 intersection. D4 non-coaxial shear deformation is mainly localized at the boundary between the Moldanubian nappe and Brunia and bears strong top to the NNE shear criteria. In order to constrain kinematics of the D3 deformation, strain modelling was performed to show that the Moldanubian hot nappe was frontally thrust over the Brunia indentor. The renewed D4 tangential movement only heterogeneously reactivates the horizontal S3. This evolution is recorded in 40Ar/39Ar amphibole cooling ages, which show two statistically significant Carboniferous peaks at ~342 and 332 Ma, which are also reflected by published detrital muscovite 40Ar/39Ar ages in the adjacent foreland basin. This geochronological record is correlated with progressive erosion of the topographically elevated upper crustal part of the Moldanubian nappe during D3 frontal thrusting, followed by greenschist facies D4 transpressive reactivation and subsequent erosion of high-grade parts of the nappe.

A geological map is an indispensable tool for understanding the structure of the Earth’s crust but high-quality geological maps are usually lacking in remote areas of mountainous Central Asia covered by vast deserts. The progress in remote sensing and geographical information system (GIS), as well as the advancement in analytical methods, have generated new challenges in producing modern geological maps in such regions. The presented 1:50,000 geological map along the Sagsai River summarizes new and more accurate geological data from the geologically interesting region at the contact of the supracrustal and deep crustal Tugrug and Tseel units forming the metamorphosed accretionary wedge on the S and SW slopes of the Mongolian Altai. These geological units are formed by the lower Palaeozoic volcano-sedimentary sequences affected by Devonian Barrovian metamorphism ranging from lower greenschist to granulite facies. This metamorphic basement was subsequently intruded by the post-orogenic late Carboniferous Sagsai Pluton. The presented map shows complex relationships between different crustal levels of the metamorphosed accretionary wedge and post-tectonic intrusion evaluated using a GIS, numerical processing of remote sensing data as well as field documentation and laboratory studies.

New and published paleomagnetic measurements from Trans Altai and South Gobi zones in south Mongolia document large tectonic motions in between Late Carboniferous and Triassic. Magnetic inclinations confirm equatorial position of south Mongolian terranes in Late Carboniferous–Permian times. The evolution of magnetic declinations indicates 90° anticlockwise rotation in between latest Carboniferous and Early Triassic of all studied tectonic units around the Eulerian pole located close to axis of Mongolian orocline. The anticlockwise rotation continues in Triassic being accompanied by a major drift to the north. The structural and published geochronological data suggest Carboniferous E–W shortening of the whole region resulting in N–S trend of all continental and oceanic geological units followed by orthogonal N–S shortening during Late Permian to Early Jurassic. Both paleomagnetic and geological data converge in a tectonic model of oroclinal bending of Mongolian ribbon continent, westerly back arc oceanic domain and Mongol–Okhotsk subduction zone to the east. The oroclinal bending model is consistent with the coincidence of the Eulerian pole of rotation with the structural axis of Mongolian orocline. In addition, the Mesozoic collisional tectonics is reflected by late remagnetizations due to formation of wide deformation fronts and hydrothermal activity.

The Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB) is a typical accretionary orogen divided into numerous lithostratigraphic terranes. In theory, these terranes should be characterized by contrasting magnetic and gravity signatures owing to their dissimilar petrophysical properties. To test this hypothesis, the extent of tectonostratigraphic terranes in southern Mongolia was compared with the potential field data. The analysis reveals that the terrane boundaries are not systematically defined by strong gravity and magnetic gradients. The correlation of the magnetic signal with the geology reveals that the magnetic highs coincide with Late Carboniferous to Early Permian volcanic-plutonic belts. The matched filtering shows a good continuity of signal along the boundaries of these high magnetic anomalies toward the deeper crustal levels which may indicate the presence of deeply rooted tectonomagmatic zones. The axes of high-density bodies in the western and central parts of the study area are characterized by periodic alternations of NW-SE trending gravity anomalies corresponding to up to 20 km wide cleavage fronts of Permo-Triassic age. The matched filtering analysis shows good continuity of signal to the depth of these gravity highs which may indicate presence of deeply rooted high-strain zones. The magnetic signal is interpreted to be as the result of a giant Permo-Triassic magmatic event associated with lithosphere-scale deformation, whereas the gravity pattern is related to the postaccretionary shortening of the CAOB between the North China and Siberia cratons.

This paper presents quantitative microstructural and crystallographic preferred orientation (CPO) analyses of an Alpine amphibolite facies shear zone developed in the Fibbia metagranite (Gotthard massif, Central Alps). The weakly deformed metagranite and orthogneiss at the margins of the shear zone are characterized by a bulk strain partitioning between harder coarse-grained monomineralic aggregates, derived from quartz and K-feldspar porphyroclasts, and softer fine-grained plagioclase-bearing shear bands. A characteristic feature is a dilatant fracturing of strong quartz and feldspar aggregates. CPOs and microtextures suggest that quartz and K-feldspar aggregates are dynamically recrystallized via dislocation creep while plagioclases show evidences of fluid-assisted diffusive mass transfer and grain boundary sliding. In the mylonite and ultramylonite shear zone core, the porphyroclasts-derived quartz and K-feldspar layers are broken-down to produce a polyphased matrix that is characterized by a homogeneous micron-scale grain size and regular/random distribution. Here, the deformation of the whole aggregate occurs via a fluid-assisted dissolution–precipitation creep and grain boundary sliding, referred as a fluid-assisted granular flow. We propose a model of shear zone formation associated with the nucleation of shear zone followed by lateral widening of the sheared domain. The lateral broadening of the shear zone is driven by (1) the increase in fluid pressure in permeable albite–oligoclase shear bands that results in expulsion of fluids to the shear zone margins and hydraulic fracturing of strong aggregates, and (2) the thermodynamic re-equilibration via metasomatic reactions of the shear zone walls.

The Trans-Altai Zone in southern Mongolia is characterized by thrusting of greenschist-facies Silurian oceanic rocks over Devonian and Lower Carboniferous volcano-sedimentary sequences, by E–W directed folding affecting the early Carboniferous volcanic rocks, and by the development of N–S trending magmatic fabrics in the Devonian–Carboniferous arc plutons. This structural pattern is interpreted as the result of early Carboniferous thick-skinned E–W directed nappe stacking of oceanic crust associated with syn-compressional emplacement of a magmatic arc. The southernmost South Gobi Zone represents a Proterozoic continental domain affected by shallow crustal greenschist-facies detachments of Ordovician and Devonian cover sequences from the Proterozoic substratum, whereas supracrustal Carboniferous volcanic rocks and Permian sediments were folded into N–S upright folds. This structural pattern implies E–W directed thin-skinned tectonics operating from the late Carboniferous to the Permian, as demonstrated by K–Ar ages ranging from ~ 320 Ma to 257 Ma for clay fractions separated from a variety of rock types. Moreover, the geographical distribution of granitoids combined with their geochemistry and SHRIMP U–Pb zircon ages form distinct groups of Carboniferous and Permian age that record typical processes of magma generation and increase in crustal thickness. The field observations combined with clay ages, the geochemical characteristics of the granitoids and their ages imply that the E–W trending zone affected by tectonism migrated southwards, leaving the Trans Altai Zone inactive during the late Carboniferous and Permian, suggesting that the two units were tectonically amalgamated along a major E–W trending strike slip fault zone. This event was related to late Carboniferous subduction that was responsible for the vast volume of granitoid magma emplaced at 300–305 Ma in the South Gobi and at 307–308 Ma in the Trans-Altai Zones. The formation and growth of the crust was initially due only to subduction and accretion processes. During the post-collisional period from 305 to 290 Ma the addition of heat to the crust led to the generation of (per-) alkaline melts. Once amalgamated, these two different crustal domains were affected by N–S compression during the Triassic and early Jurassic (185–173 Ma), resulting in E–W refolding of early thrusts and folds and major shortening of both tectonic zones.

[1] Granitoid magmatic sheets emplaced syntectonically during growth of the Orlica-Śnieznik mantled gneiss dome (Central Sudetes, European Variscan belt) were examined by means of structural geology, quartz, and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) fabric studies. Magmatic emplacement was localized along the eastern transpressive margin of the high metamorphic core and below the low-grade detached mantle rimming the southern margin of the dome. In the first area, the magmatic sheets were emplaced parallel to the dilated subhorizontal foliation of an anisotropic pre-orogenic block. The resulting melt-host rock multilayer localized the transpressive zone along which the bulk of magma was emplaced. The AMS study shows an across-strike fabric zonation underlying a strongly transpressive solid-state deformation in the hanging-wall, magmatic subhorizontal fabric in the foot-wall and a transitional fabric in the center of the intrusion. In contrast, along the southern dome margin, magmatic sheets intruded along steep foliations of weakly metamorphic mantle rocks, and are affected by recumbent folding and subhorizontal shearing. The bulk of the sheets present a shallow-dipping magmatic foliation and an along-strike magmatic lineation. The variations of the quartz and magnetic fabrics are attributed to superimposition of pure shear-dominated ductile thinning followed by simple shear-dominated detachment onto the original steep fabric. AMS modeling confirms the role of variation of orientation of pre-intrusive anisotropy during progressive deformation on the resulting fabric pattern and helps explaining observed variations in fabric orientations and symmetries. This study highlights contrasting mechanical behavior of syntectonically emplaced magmas in different parts of a growing crustal-scale mantled gneiss dome.

Discontinuous and kinematically unrelated C-S fabrics have been recognized along the contact between the Gemeric and Veporic Units in the Western Carpathians. The formation of S and C fabrics within orthogneiss, quartzite and chloritoid-kyanite schist of the Veporic Unit is associated with Cretaceous syn-burial orogen-parallel flow and subsequent exhumational unroofing. The formation of the two fabrics characterized by distinct quartz deformation microstructure and metamorphic assemblage is separated by an inter-tectonic growth of transversal chloritoid-, kyanite-, ± monazite-bearing assemblage. The monazite U-Th-Pb concordia age of 97 ± 4 Ma was obtained by the laser ablation ICP-MS dating method. The age of this inter-tectonic metamorphic stage together with existing 40Ar/39Ar ages on exhumation of the Veporic Unit indicate that despite the similar appearance to shear bands or C-S mylonites there is a time span of at least 10 Myr between the formation of homogeneous S fabrics and superposed discrete C fabrics in the studied rocks

International audience; We present a numerical model of the main phase (370-335 Ma) of the Variscan orogeny in the central part of the Bohemian Massif. The crustal deformation in our model is driven by radiogenic heating in the felsic lower crust, the lateral contraction of the Moldanubian domain due to convergence with the Saxothuringian plate (in the early stage of orogeny), and the indentation of the Brunovistulian basement into the weakened orogenic root (in the late stage). Our model explains the main geological events inferred from the geological record in the Moldanubian domain: formation of the orogenic plateau and onset of sedimentation at about 345 Ma, rapid exhumation of the orogenic lower crust at about 340 Ma and subsurface flow of crustal material (similar to 335 Ma and later). The results of our modeling suggest that delamination of the lithosphere, often invoked to explain the high temperature metamorphism in the orogenic lower crust of the Bohemian Massif, is not the only physical mechanism which can transfer a sufficient amount of heat to the crust to trigger its overturn.

Microstructural study revealed that the ductile flow of intensely folded fine-grained salt exposed in an underground mine (Zechstein-Werra salt sequence, Neuhof mine, Germany) was accommodated by coupled activity of solution-precipitation (SP) creep and microcracking of the halite grains. The grain cores of the halite aggregates contain remnants of sedimentary microstructures with straight and chevron shaped fluid inclusion trails (FITs) and are surrounded by two concentric mantles reflecting different events of salt precipitation. Numerous intra-granular or transgranular microcracks originate at the tips of FITs and propagate preferentially along the interface between sedimentary cores and the surrounding mantle of reprecipitated halite. These microcracks are interpreted as tensional Griffith cracks. Microcracks starting at grain boundary triple junctions or grain boundary ledges form due to stress concentrations generated by grain boundary sliding (GBS). Solid or fluid inclusions frequently alter the course of the propagating microcracks or the cracks terminate at these inclusions. Because the inner mantle containing the microcracks is corroded and is surrounded by microcrack-free outer mantle, microcracking is interpreted to reflect transient failure of the aggregate. Microcracking is argued to play a fundamental role in the continuation and enhancement of the SP–GBS creep during halokinesis of the Werra salt, because the transgranular cracks (1) provide the ingress of additional fluid in the grain boundary network when cross-cutting the FITs and (2) decrease grain size by splitting the grains. More over, the ingress of additional fluids into grain boundaries is also provided by non-conservative grain boundary migration that advanced into FITs bearing cores of grains. Described readjustments of the microstructure and mechanical and chemical feedbacks for the grain boundary diffusion flow in halite-brine system are proposed to be comparable to other rock-fluid or rock-melt aggregates deforming by the grain boundary sliding (GBS) coupled deformation mechanisms.

A microstructural and metamorphic study of a naturally deformed medium- to high-pressure granitic orthogneiss (OrlicaSnieznik dome, Bohemian Massif) provides evidence of behaviour of the felsic crust during progressive burial along a subduction-type apparent thermal gradient (similar to 10 degrees C km-1). The granitic orthogneisses develops three distinct microstructural types, as follows: type I augen orthogneiss, type II banded orthogneiss and type III mylonitic orthogneiss, each representing an evolutionary stage of a progressively deformed granite. Type I orthogneiss is composed of partially recrystallized K-feldspar porphyroclasts surrounded by wide fronts of myrmekite, fully recrystallized quartz aggregates and interconnected monomineralic layers of recrystallized plagioclase. Compositional layering in the type II orthogneiss is defined by plagioclase- and K-feldspar-rich layers, both of which show an increasing proportion of interstitial minerals, as well as the deformation of recrystallized myrmekite fronts. Type III orthogneiss shows relicts of quartz and K-feldspar ribbons preserved in a fine-grained polymineralic matrix. All three types have the same assemblage (quartz + plagioclase + K-feldspar + muscovite + biotite + garnet + sphene +/- ilmenite), but show systematic variations in the composition of muscovite and garnet from types I to III. This is consistent with the equilibration of the three types at different positions along a prograde P-T path ranging from 700 degrees C (types II and III orthogneisses). The deformation types thus do not represent evolutionary stages of a highly partitioned deformation at constant P-T conditions, but reflect progressive formation during the burial of the continental crust. The microstructures of the type I and type II orthogneisses result from the dislocation creep of quartz and K-feldspar whereas a grain boundary sliding-dominated diffusion creep regime is the characteristic of the type III orthogneiss. Strain weakening related to the transition from type I to type II microstructures was enhanced by the recrystallization of wide myrmekite fronts, and plagioclase and quartz, and further weakening and strain localization in type III orthogneiss occurred via grain boundary sliding-enhanced diffusion creep. The potential role of incipient melting in strain localization is discussed.

Continental crust is formed above subduction zones by well-known process of “juvenile crust growth”. This new crust is in modern Earth assembled into continents by two ways: (i) short-lived collisions of continental blocks with the Laurussian or later Eurasian continent along the “Alpine Himalayan collisional/interior orogens” in the heart of the Pangean continental plates realm; and (ii) long lived lateral accretion of ocean-floor fragments along “circum-Pacific accretionary/peripheral orogens” at the border of the PaleoPacific and modern Pacific oceanic plate.

Tectonic-magmatic reworking of accretionary wedges is a key process responsible for differentiation and stabilization of continental crustal in accretionary orogens. This generic problem can be exemplified by magmatic evolution of the Chinese Altai which represents a high-grade core of the world's largest accretionary system, namely the Central Asian Orogenic Belt (CAOB). In the Chinese Altai, voluminous SilurianDevonian granitoids intruding a greywacke-dominated Ordovician flysch sequence. These intrusions are classically interpreted to originate from predominant (70‒90 %) juvenile (depleted mantle-derived) magma. However, their close temporal and spatial relationship with the regional anatexis of flysch rocks, allows us to examine the possibility that they were mainly derived from flysch rocks.

Eclogite, felsic orthogneiss and garnet–staurolite metapelite occur in a 5 km long profile in the area of Miedzygorze in the Orlica–Śnieznik dome (Bohemian Massif). Petrographic observations and mineral equilibria modelling, in the context of detailed structural work, are used to document the close juxtaposition of high-pressure and medium-pressure rocks. The structural succession in all lithologies shows an early shallow-dipping fabric, S1, that is folded by upright folds and overprinted by a heterogeneously developed subvertical foliation, S2. Late recumbent folds associated with a weak shallow-dipping axial-plane cleavage, S3, occur locally. The S1 fabric in the eclogite is defined by alternation of garnet-rich (grs = 22–29 mol.%) and omphacite-rich (jd = 33–36 mol.%) layers with oriented muscovite (Si = 3.26–3.31 p.f.u.) and accessory kyanite, zoisite, rutile and quartz, indicating conditions of ∼19–22 kbar and ∼700–750 °C. The assemblage in the retrograde S2 fabric is formed by amphibole, plagioclase, biotite and relict rutile surrounded by ilmenite and sphene that is compatible with decompression and cooling from ∼9 kbar and ∼730 °C to 5–6 kbar and 600–650 °C. The S3 fabric contains in addition domains with albite, chlorite, K-feldspar and magnetite indicating cooling to greenschist facies conditions. The metapelites are composed of garnet, staurolite, muscovite, biotite, quartz, ilmenite and chlorite. Chemical zoning of garnet cores that contain straight ilmenite and staurolite inclusion trails oriented perpendicular to the external S2 fabric indicates prograde growth, from ∼5 kbar and ∼520 °C to ∼7 kbar and ∼610 °C, during the formation of the S1 fabric. Inclusion trails parallel with the S2 fabric at garnet and staurolite rims are interpreted to be a continuation of the prograde path to ∼7.5 and ∼630 °C in the S2 fabric. Matrix chlorite parallel to the S2 foliation indicates that the subvertical fabric was still active below 550 °C. The axial planar S2 fabrics developed during upright folding are associated with retrogression of the eclogite under amphibolite facies conditions, and with prograde evolution in the metapelites, associated with their juxtaposition. The shared part of the eclogite and metapelite P–T paths during the development of the subvertical fabric reflects their exhumation together.
