Background: Bibliometric analysis is an effective method for evaluating the publication characteristics and development of a journal. To our knowledge, this study is the first such analysis of the publications in Cancer Nursing ., Objective: This study aimed to analyze the publication characteristics and evolution of Cancer Nursing over a period of 36 years since its inception., Methods: Bibliometric analysis was carried out on 3095 publications. Data were collected from the Web of Science Core Collection database on September 15, 2023. Data analysis was conducted with Web of Science Core Collection, VOSviewer, and Bibliometrix package in R software., Results: The results showed a steady increase in the citation and publication structure of Cancer Nursing . "Quality of life" was at the center of the studies, and "quality of life," "women," and "breast cancer" were identified as trend topics. The United States was both at the center of the cooperation network and was the country that contributed the most publications to the journal., Conclusion: Cancer Nursing has had an increasing contribution to and impact on cancer nursing in terms of the quality and citations of published articles. It was noted that the journal's network of collaboration has expanded globally and that its thematic diversity is high. Background: Advanced practice nursing was introduced in France in 2018, in response to health needs. The first advanced practice nurses were graduated since 2019 and were trained in one among four medical areas including oncology and onco-hematology. The purpose of this article is to make an early assessment of the development of the profession of oncology Advanced Practice Nurse in France., Method: An exploratory study was conducted. A sample of 44 onco-hematology IPA graduated in 2019 and 2020 was recruited from June 2021 to end of July 2021. The 44 participants completed a questionnaire, by phone interviews or self-administered., Results and Conclusion: The distribution of the 44 participants concerns 12 of the 13 regions of metropolitan France. This profession shows an employability for 86% of the first graduates. These professionals practice in health care institutions and rather in oncology, 71% in the framework of an organizational protocol established with the oncologist. They appear to be well accepted by patients and oncology teams. Further studies on performance and quality indicators will make it possible to evaluate the added value of the oncology Advanced Practice Nurses in the cancer patient's pathway., (Copyright © 2022 Société Française du Cancer. Background: Despite tremendous progress in understanding the unmet needs of cancer survivors, our understanding of oncology nurses' perspectives and practices in the delivery of survivorship care is inadequate., Objectives: The aims of this study were to assess oncology nurses' perceptions about their responsibility and frequency of delivery of survivorship care to cancer patients and to examine the factors influencing such care., Methods: A cross-sectional survey was administered to 81 nurses working in the oncology unit of hospitals in Hong Kong. Participants completed an investigator-developed questionnaire designed to assess oncology nurses' perceptions of responsibility, practices, and barriers regarding the provision of survivorship care for cancer patients., Results: Results revealed discrepancies between oncology nurses' perceptions of responsibility and practices, with high levels of perceptions of various survivorship care as their responsibility but low levels in delivery of such care. Despite that discussing and managing pain was agreed by most oncology nurses as their responsibility (95.1%), 34.6% of them have never managed survivors' pain. Besides, 33.3% of nurses have never discussed and managed survivors' sexuality issues. Lack of time (79.0%), inadequate educational resources for family members (59.3%), and lack of knowledge and skills (54.4%) were major factors that impeded survivorship care provision., Conclusions: This study provides further evidence for inadequacies of oncology nurses in delivering survivorship care and their perceived barriers. Introduction: Due to frequent treatment side effects and weight loss, colorectal cancer patients require oncologic care and nutritional counseling both during and after hospitalization. The current study evaluated differences in discharge and side effects management and nutritional behavior between colorectal cancer patients of a control group without systematic counseling and of an intervention group with access to structured in- and outpatient oncology nurse and nutritional counseling., Methods: The presented explorative, quantitative, single-center, interventional pilot study is a health services research project with a quasi-experimental design. Using a self-designed standardized questionnaire, data were collected from the control group (n = 75) before and from the intervention group (n = 114) after the introduction of in- and outpatient oncology nurse and structured systematic nutritional counseling. The in- and outpatient counseling services were developed and evaluated in the form of a structured nurse-led counseling concept., Results: Intervention group patients profited significantly from inpatient oncology nurse counseling in seven different areas of discharge management. No differences were observed concerning patient-reported general and gastrointestinal side effects except for xerostomia and dysphagia, but of the patients participating in both in- and outpatient oncology nurse counseling, 90.0% were better able to cope with general side effects of treatment. Patients with in- and outpatient structured systematic nutritional counseling more frequently received nutritional information (p = 0.001), were better at gauging food intolerances (p = 0.023), and followed the dietician's advice in cases of gastrointestinal side effects significantly more often (p = 0.003) than control patients. Counselor-reported outcomes concerning gastrointestinal side effects showed improvement in most of the patients taking part in systematic in- and outpatient nutritional counseling, except for weight loss in 4 patients., Conclusion: In- and outpatient counseling in discharge and side effects management and nutrition improve the outcomes of colorectal cancer patients. Outpatient counseling should be further developed and evaluated in future studies.

Purpose: To assess Turkish oncology nurses' knowledge regarding novel coronavirus (COVID-19) during the current outbreak in Turkey., Methods: This descriptive study was carried out with the 185 oncology nurses between April and May 2020 in Turkey. Research data were collected through online survey using "Nurse Information Form" and "Nurse Information Scale for COVID-19." Multilinear regression analysis was used in determining the factors affecting oncology nurses' information regarding COVID-19., Results: According to the data delivered from 185 oncology nurses, 57.7% of the participants had an undergraduate degree, 74.1% were working in adult oncology units, and 52.4% of them were working as clinical nurses, 48.1% of the nurses received education for COVID-19 (51.9% did not receive) and 70.3% followed and read the COVID-19 Guidelines published by the Ministry of Health (29.7% did not follow guidelines). Using multiple regression analysis, a model based on the relationship between the variables was created. In the model, the descriptive characteristics of the oncology nurses and their experiences of COVID-19 were found to explain 29.1% of their knowledge level for COVID-19. Nurses' education level, the presence of a relative diagnosed with COVID-19, and following the COVID-19 guidelines were found to statistically significantly affect the knowledge levels of COVID-19., Conclusion: These findings suggest that hospital management and the Ministry of Health should provide more information for the oncology nurses to better control of cancer patients from the infectious disease.

Oncology nurses responded to these questions about their experiences during the COVID-19 pandemic: What have you learned about yourself, or what insights or competencies have you applied to your practice?

Oncology nurses are an essential component of cancer care teams. Nurses play a vital role in ensuring that cancer patients comply with their cancer treatment. In the cancer care nursing context, competency is not merely being skilled, but also implies the characteristic of being able to perform effectively. In addition to the need for competence, nursing is a discipline rich in values including human dignity, caring, humanity, and respect for personal privacy. Research from a variety of disciplines indicates that values often influence human behaviour in professional and work settings. It is often believed, therefore, that nurse' values and work experience influence and contribute to their work performance. Few studies have attempted to examine these relationships, particularly in the context of cancer care nursing. The purpose of this study was to determine the relationship between personal values, work experience and competency among cancer care nurses in Malaysia. Quantitative surveys were used to collect the data. A total of 845 cancer care nurses from 38 public hospitals in Peninsular Malaysia participated in the study. Descriptive statistics and Pearson Product-Moment Correlations were used to analyse the data. The findings revealed positive and significant relationships between personal values and competency (r = 0.59, p < 0.01) and work experience and competency (r = 0.11, p < 0.047). The findings support the assertion that Malaysian nurses' values and work experience are related to performance-related competency., .

Purpose: Ireland's Sláintecare health plan is placing an increased focus on primary care. A community oncology nursing programme was developed to train community nurses to deliver care in the community. While the initial pilot was proven to be clinically safe, no cost evaluation was carried out. This study aims to compare the costs of providing cancer support services in a day-ward versus in the community., Methods: 183 interventions (40 in day-ward and 143 in community) were timed and costed using healthcare professional salaries and the Human Capital method., Results: From the healthcare provider perspective, the day-ward was a significantly cheaper option by an average of €17.13 (95% CI €13.72 - €20.54, p < 0.001). From the societal perspective, the community option was cheaper by an average of €2.77 (95% CI -€3.02 - €8.55), although this was a non-significant finding. Sensitivity analyses indicate that the community service may be significantly cheaper from the societal perspective., Conclusions: Given the demand for cost-viable options for primary care services, this programme may represent a national option for cancer care in Ireland when viewed from the societal perspective., (Copyright © 2020 The Authors. Purpose: Cancer nurses across Europe are being tasked with delivery of an increasing number of complex treatments and supportive care interventions as a result of ongoing advances in cancer research, and a rise in cancer incidence due to demographic changes. However, all health systems delivering cancer treatment innovations require access to an educated and motivated nursing workforce to meet demand. This study by the European Oncology Nursing Society examines comparative features of cancer nursing in Estonia, Germany, the Netherlands (NL) and the United Kingdom (UK)., Methods: Descriptive qualitative study using focus groups and individual interviews drawing on the views of cancer nurses, managers and stakeholders from four European countries (n = 97). Data collection was designed around national cancer nursing conferences held in Berlin (Germany), Ede (NL), Harrogate (UK) and Tallinn and Tartu (Estonia) between May 2017 and April 2018. Participants included a mix of nursing grades and specialisms., Findings: According to the participants education and career structure for cancer nursing was most well-developed in the Netherlands and the United Kingdom. In Germany and Estonia developments were taking place at Masters level. None of the countries had recordable qualifications in cancer nursing. Variations existed in terms of advanced practice roles and salary. Workload pressures were common, and were rising, and wellbeing initiatives were not identified. Nurses reported gaining positive feedback from caring for patients., Discussion: As demand for cancer treatment continues to grow there is a need to ensure an adequate supply of cancer nurses with the appropriate education and career structure to support patients. Background: In spite of the necessity of implementing spiritual care practices for cancer patients, there is no clear process in this regard in palliative care programs of the health system of countries. The present study was designed with the aim of developing a clinical practice guideline of spiritual care in cancer patients for oncology nurses in the current context., Methods: This is a multi-method study which was conducted in five stages within the framework of the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guideline. A research committee consisting of four focal and 16 secondary members was formed. The stages included determining the scope of the study, developing guideline (a qualitative study and a systematic review, triangulation of the data, and producing a preliminary draft), consultation stage (validation of the guideline in three rounds of the Delphi study), as well as revision and publication stages., Results: The clinical guideline of spiritual care with 84 evidence-based recommendations was developed in three main areas, including the human resources, care settings, and the process of spiritual care., Conclusions: We are hoping by applying this clinical guideline in oncology settings to move towards an integrated spiritual care plan for cancer patients in the context of our health system. Healthcare organizations should support to form spiritual care teams under supervision of the oncology nurses with qualified healthcare providers and a trained clergy. Through holistic care, they can constantly examine the spiritual needs of cancer patients alongside their other needs by focusing on the phases of the nursing process.

Purpose: In oncology, chemotherapy treatment delays potentially jeopardize patient safety and impede progress toward disease remission. The purpose of this study was to examine the causes and consequences of chemotherapy treatment delays and possible solutions to improve quality of care., Participants & Setting: The current authors selected a purposive sample of eight ambulatory oncology practices for ethnographic site visits, which lasted five days each., Methodologic Approach: The authors conducted 290 observation hours, including clinician shadowing, and 46 semistructured interviews with clinicians (oncology nurses, physicians, and advanced practice providers). Deductive and inductive thematic analysis was performed on all data., Findings: The authors identified four primary themes from the analysis that affect delays., Implications for Nursing: Future investigations should examine nurses' communication practices in the context of timely chemotherapy administration because communication and documentation technologies within healthcare settings continuously evolve.

Background: There is a dearth of research focusing on identifying the social complexities impacting on oncology and palliative care (PC), and no study has explored how the health-care system in Nigeria or other African contexts may be influencing utilization of these services., Aim: This study explored how social complexities and the organization of health-care influenced the decision-making process for the utilization of oncology and PC in a Nigerian hospital., Methods: This qualitative study used an interpretive descriptive design. Data were collected using semistructured interview guides with 40 participants, comprising health-care professionals, patients, and their families. Thematic analysis was conducted to generate and analyze patterns within the data., Findings: Three themes were identified: dysfunctional structural organization of the health-care delivery system, service-users' economic status, and the influence of social networks. The interrelationship between the themes result in patients and their family members decisions either to present late to the hospital, miss their clinical appointments, or not to seek oncological health care and PC., Conclusion: This article offers insights into the role of the health-care system, as organized currently in Nigeria, as "autoinhibitory" and not adequately prepared to address the increasing burden of cancer. We therefore argue that there is a need to restructure the Nigerian health-care system to better meet the needs of patients with cancer and their families as failure to do so will strengthen the existing inequalities, discourage usage, and increase mortality.

Advances in cancer care have led to improved survival, which, coupled with demographic trends, have contributed to rapid growth in the number of patients needing cancer care services. However, with increasing caseload, care complexity, and administrative burden, the current workforce is ill equipped to meet these burgeoning new demands. These trends have contributed to clinician burnout, compounding a widening workforce shortage. Moreover, family caregivers, who have unique knowledge of patient preferences, symptoms, and goals of care, are infrequently appreciated and supported as integral members of the oncology "careforce." A crisis is looming, which will hinder access to timely, high-quality cancer care if left unchecked. Stemming from the proceedings of a 2019 workshop convened by the National Cancer Policy Forum of the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine, this commentary characterizes the factors contributing to an increasingly strained oncology careforce and presents multilevel strategies to improve its efficiency, effectiveness, and resilience. Background: Hazardous drug exposure is an occupational health hazard to oncology nurses. Sparse data are available regarding the frequency and characteristics of hazardous drug spills., Objectives: This article aims to describe nurses' hazardous drug exposures and use of personal protective equipment during drug spills., Methods: The Drug Exposure Feedback and Education for Nurses' Safety study launched in March 2015. When drug spills occurred, consented RNs administering chemotherapy in ambulatory infusion settings completed brief questionnaires. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize equipment use and spill events., Findings: Spills were common, despite the use of closed-system transfer devices. Over two years, 51 nurses from 12 participating academic infusion centers reported 61 unique spills. Spills commonly involved highly toxic drugs. Personal protective equipment use during drug spills was suboptimal. These foundational data reveal gaps in clinical practice.

Objectives: To provide a critical reflection of COVID-19 in the context of oncology nursing and provide recommendations for caring for people affected by cancer during this pandemic., Data Sources: Electronic databases, including CINAHL, MEDLINE, PsychINFO, Scopus, professional web sites, and grey literature were searched using Google Scholar., Conclusion: Nurses are key stakeholders in developing and implementing policies regarding standards of care during the COVID-19 pandemic. This pandemic poses several challenges for oncology services. Oncology nurses are providing a pivotal role in the care and management of the novel COVID-19 in the year landmarked as the International Year of the Nurse., Implications for Nursing Practice: It is too early to tell what shape this pandemic will take and its impact on oncology care. Hourly rounding by nursing staff helps to proactively manage patient needs and minimize the number of unscheduled calls from patients. The focus of this study was to determine if an increased emphasis on hourly rounding had an effect on call bell usage on an oncology unit. Patient call bell usage requests, such as asking for water or repositioning, and the total number of all alarms, such as bed exit alarms and lavatory assist alarms, decreased. Subsequent patient satisfaction surveys showed an increase in patient perception of how quickly help was received.

Background: Nursing tasks are changing as the proportion of people over the age of 65 years is increasing and is expected to double over the next four decades. New innovative solutions such as Point of Care Treatment (POCT) are being tested in oncological settings in order to optimise treatment, and this changes the nurse management in oncology. There is a need to explore oncology nurses' perception and experience when implementing the innovations in order to understand the implications for nursing and the treatment of older patients with cancer., Methods: Qualitative research with face to face interviews with nurses working in oncology. Sample size (Mean = 8). Data were recorded verbatim, transcribed, and thematic analysis used., Results: Three themes were identified: a, A great advantage in nursing, b, Change of practice in nursing care, c, Challenges in shifting roles. A majority of the participants had the perception that POCT treatment was an advantage not only for the nursing profession but for the older patients in cancer treatment as well. Monitoring the older patients with cancer at home would prevent them from accessing the hospital and get exposed to viral infections as well as saving them the journey to the hospital. Purpose: Recognition and responses of the health system to healthcare errors are key areas for improvement in oncology. Despite their role in direct patient care, nurses' perceptions of errors have rarely been explored. The aim of this study was to determine oncology nurses' direct experience of healthcare errors in the previous six months; the circumstances surrounding the error; and ensuing actions by the healthcare system., Methods: Cross-sectional survey of nurses who were members of an oncology nursing society and/or registered or enrolled nurses employed in an oncology setting. Participants indicated whether they had direct experience (i.e. direct involvement or witnessing) of error(s) in the previous six months. Those who experienced an error indicated their perceptions of the: cause; location and phase of care; how the error was identified, who was responsible, level of harm and action(s) taken., Results: 67% (n = 65/97) of nurses who completed the survey had direct experience with at least one error in the previous six months. According to these nurses, most occurred during treatment (n = 48, 74%), happened in outpatient clinics (n = 28, 43%) and were related to chemotherapy (n = 15, 23%). Nurses perceived errors were primarily caused by nurses (n = 36, 55%) and doctors (n = 27, 42%); and 54% (n = 35) were deemed 'near-miss'. Nurses perceived errors were recorded (n = 40, 62%), explained to patients (n = 33, 51%) and an apology provided (n = 32, 49%)., Conclusion: Two-thirds of oncology nurses in this study had direct experience with an error in the previous six months. Nurses perceived response to errors as inconsistent with open disclosure standards. Survivorship care and survivorship care plans have become integral components of comprehensive cancer care and national accreditation. An academic and community cancer network successfully pilot tested a new non-nursing role to support efficiency in case finding, staffing, and tracking patients throughout care delivery: the survivorship data coordinator (SDC). Key functions of the SDC role include abstracting data into survivorship care plans, scheduling survivorship visits, and tracking the number of completed survivorship care plans shared with patients. This pivotal role improved organizational processes and facilitated achievement of accreditation standards around survivorship care.

Background: Generalist nurses frequently care for people who have advanced chronic diseases in decline, or who are dying. Few studies have measured graduating nurses' knowledge about end-of-life (EoL) care., Aims: To measure and compare knowledge about EoL care using the palliative care quiz for nurses among two cohorts of graduating nurses in a baccalaureate nursing programme., Methods: A quantitative cross-sectional survey design using a convenience sample of two cohorts of students., Findings: Total mean scores were low at 44.5% and 46.5% for the cohorts, respectively; this was not statistically significant. Misconceptions related to presentation and symptom management of the dying patient and integration of palliative with acute care. Palliative care knowledge was higher among the cohort who completed the dedicated EoL care course., Conclusion: Significant misconceptions about EoL care exist among these graduating nurses; this information provides direction for curriculum revision.

Problem Identification: Patients with cancer face high expectations for performing health literacy activities necessary for self-management and decision making, but only 12% of adults in the United States are proficient in health literacy. This review explores evidence regarding what is known about functional, interactive, and critical health literacy in adult oncology populations., Literature Search: The review was conducted by searching extensively in the CINAHL® Plus database., Data Evaluation: Of 614 articles retrieved from the literature search, 22 were included in the final sample. Most were cross-sectional, descriptive, correlational studies., Synthesis: Health literacy research in the United States focuses primarily on functional health literacy, but studies that include interactive and/or critical health literacy indicate their applicability in adult oncology populations., Implications for Research: Additional research is needed to clarify the role of health literacy in cancer care to develop effective interventions that facilitate self-management and decision making.

Burnout in health service staff is a cause for concern since it has negative consequences for the individual affected, the wider organization, and patients. The Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) has been widely used to assess the prevalence of burnout within oncology services. The MBI-HSS is a self-report measure comprising three subscales-Emotional Exhaustion (EE), Depersonalization (DP), and Personal Accomplishment (PA). This article reports on the first study to investigate the psychometric properties of the MBI-HSS when administered to pediatric oncology staff. Two hundred and three pediatric oncology staff recruited through seven UK Principal Treatment Centers (PTCs) and a children's cancer charity completed the MBI-HSS. The factor structure of the instrument was tested using confirmatory and exploratory factor analysis, with Rasch analysis applied to assess whether the measure meets the requirements of an interval-level scale. Cronbach alpha was used to assess internal reliability. Factor analysis did not support the traditional three-factor structure of the MBI-HSS but instead suggested seven factors. Rasch analysis and alpha coefficients indicated that while the EE and the PA subscales fulfilled the requirements of an interval-level measure for group-level diagnosis, DP did not. Further investigation revealed a "floor effect" on many DP items. Whereas the EE and PA subscales of the MBI-HSS can be used in research with pediatric oncology staff working in PTCs, there are considerable problems with the DP subscale, and researchers should be cautious in interpreting data from this subscale.

Objective: To investigate the prevalence of and reasons for missed nursing care in oncology units., Method: A cross-sectional study was conducted at inpatient oncology units at a private hospital. Eighty-three professionals from the nursing team took part. The MISSCARE instrument and a sociodemographic questionnaire were administered. Simple descriptive statistics were used for analyses. Pearson's chi-square test was used to detect associations between variables., Results: The care tasks missed most frequently were assisting with toileting needs within 5 minutes of a request (57.8%), ambulation 3 times per day or as ordered (44.6%), and turning patients every 2 hours (36.1%). The main reasons for missed care were related to communication: tension or communication breakdowns within the nursing team, and the caregiver responsible off unit or unavailable (both 66.2%)., Conclusions: there is a need to develop nursing interventions that neutralize and/or reduce the negative results of this missed care in order to improve the quality of care provided to cancer patients.

In the United States less than 10% of cancer patients engage in clinical trials. Although most oncology nurses have multiple opportunities to discuss clinical trials with patients, barriers including attitudes and social norms may impede these discussions. Guided by the Theory of Planned Behavior, we developed and evaluated measures for attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control of nurses for discussing clinical trials with cancer patients. Of the 18,000 Oncology Nurse Society members invited, 1,964 completed the survey. Structural equation modeling and internal consistency reliability were used to evaluate items and constructs. We found that overall model fit and reliability was good: Confirmatory Fit Index (CFI) = 0.91, Root Mean Square Error of Approximation (RMSEA) = 0.05; attitudes, 21 items, alpha = 0.84; perceived behavioral control, 10 items, alpha = 0.85; and subjective norms, 9 items, alpha = 0.89. These measures of attitudes, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control show good reliability and initial evidence of validity.

Background: There is a growing recognition that medical staff members are exposed to job and life stressors that increase the risk of burnout. This study aimed to investigate the potential stressors among medical staff members working at a Cancer Center in Beijing and to explore the demographic, occupational, and societal features associated with burnout., Methods: This was a cross-sectional study. The Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI) survey was distributed to all medical staff members, along with an anonymous questionnaire to collect general information about demographic, occupational, and societal characteristics. The data were analyzed using T test, ANOVA, and multivariable linear regression., Results: A total of 1096 of 1208 (91%) medical staff members completed the questionnaires, including 285 (26%) doctors and 572 (52%) nurses. The scores for emotional exhaustion (EE), depersonalization (DP), and personal accomplishment (PA) were 14.51 ± 9.78, 5.78 ± 5.59, and 35.07 ± 10.43, respectively. Domicile, being a nurse, working overtime, and low self-rated QoL were predictors of EE; Domicile, being a researcher, low self-rated health, low self-rated QoL, and bad colleague relationships were predictors of DP; Age, being a doctor or a nurse, low self-rated health, and low self-rated interpersonal relationships were predictors of low PA., Conclusion: Compared with the other occupations, doctors and nurses are more likely to experience burnout. Additionally, cultivating a better work environment, promoting the health and quality of life of staff, and improving rapport with colleagues may help to prevent burnout., (© 2019 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.)

Aim: To explore the differences in perceived patient safety culture in cancer nurses working in Estonia, Germany, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom., Design: An exploratory cross-sectional survey., Methods: In 2018, 393 cancer nurses completed the 12 dimensions of the Hospital Survey on Patient Safety Culture., Results: The mean score for the overall patient safety grade was 61.3. The highest rated dimension was "teamwork within units" while "staffing" was the lowest in all four countries. Nurses in the Netherlands and in the United Kingdom, scored higher on "communication openness", the "frequency of events reported", and "non-punitive response to errors", than nurses from Estonia or Germany. We found statistically significant differences between the countries for the association between five of the 12 dimensions with the overall patient safety grade: overall perception of patient safety, communication openness, staffing, handoffs and transitions and non-punitive response to errors., Conclusion: Patient safety culture, as reported by cancer nurses, varies between European countries and contextual factors, such as recognition of the nursing role and education have an impact on it. Cancer nurses' role in promoting patient safety is a key concern and requires better recognition on a European and global level., Impact: Cancer Nursing Societies in any country can use these data as an indication on how to improve patient care in their country. Background: There is increasing interest in expanding palliative care (PC) services in the community-based outpatient oncology clinic. However, there is a paucity of data on the economics of integrating palliative medicine in this setting. Objective: Provide scheduling and financial data on PC physician encounters, charges, and reimbursement in a community-based oncology practice. Design: Retrospective review of billing data and scheduling software at a single practice. Setting: A community-based oncology practice comprised of 25 medical oncologists in 8 suburban offices. PC physicians were integrated into the practice. Measurement: Billed PC physician charges were analyzed on an annual basis for a four-year period from initial start-up of the PC clinic on September 2, 2014 to August 31, 2018. Results: During year 1, a single PC physician saw 483 new patients and 827 follow-up encounters in four different office locations. In year 2, he saw 471 new patients and 1229 follow-up encounters. Actual collected revenue for those 1700 encounters was $228,168. In year 3, a second PC physician was added and services were expanded to a total of six offices. In year 4, two PC physicians billed for 832 new encounters and 2450 follow-up encounters for a total collected revenue of $454,356. Conclusions: In a suburban community-based oncology practice, a PC physician can support a substantial part of his or her cost to an oncology practice.

Background: Patients with terminal conditions are often admitted to the emergency department (ED) for acute medical services, but studies have suggested that multiple ED admissions may negatively impact end-of-life (EOL) care. Research have shown that incorporating palliative care (PC) is integral to optimal EOL care, but it is an aspect of medical practice that is often neglected. The current study sought to provide an overview of health outcomes and hospital costs of patients with cancer admitted to The Ottawa Hospital and/or received acute medical services during their final 2 weeks of life. Cost comparisons and estimates were made between hospital and hospice expenditures., Methods: We conducted a retrospective chart review of palliative patients who died at The Ottawa Hospital in 2012. A total of 130 patients who visited the ED within 2 weeks of death were included in the analyses., Results: In this cohort of patients, 71% of admitted patients did not have advanced care directives and 85% experienced a metastasis, but only 18% had a PC medical doctor. Patients were hospitalized, on average, for 7 days and hospitalization costs exceeded the estimated hospice cost by approximately 2.5 times (Can$1 041 170.00 at Can$8009.00/patient vs Can$401 570.00 at Can$3089.00/patient, respectively)., Conclusion: Our study highlighted the importance of PC integration in high-risk patients, such as those in oncology. Patients in our sample had minimal PC involvement, low advanced care directives, and accrued high costs. Based on our analyses, we concluded that these patients would have likely benefited more from hospice care rather than hospitalization.

Objectives: To assess nurses' attitudes and perceptions about research., Sample & Setting: 623 RNs at a National Cancer Institute-designated comprehensive cancer center in the midwestern United States., Methods & Variables: This study used a cross-sectional, descriptive survey to describe nurses' attitudes toward nursing research, perceptions of the research environment, and research involvement., Results: Nurses' attitudes toward research were generally more positive than negative. Results suggested that the biggest obstacle to nurses participating in research is time., Implications for Nursing: Understanding oncology nurses' attitudes toward research and the research environment is vital for the future of patient outcomes research. Results from this study inform strategic goals for increasing nursing research capacity, including the use of research teams and access to research mentors and resources, as well as nursing research fellowship programs.

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to understand breast, prostate and colorectal cancer clinical nurse specialists' (CNSs) perspectives on physical activity (PA) promotion and the role of smartphone apps to support PA promotion in cancer care., Methods: CNSs working in breast, prostate or colorectal cancer were recruited via advertisements distributed by professional organizations. In-depth semi-structured telephone interviews were conducted and analysed using thematic analysis., Results: Nineteen CNSs participated. The analysis resulted in 4 themes regarding CNSs' perspectives of PA promotion within cancer care: (i) policy changes in survivorship care have influenced CNSs' promotion of PA; (ii) CNSs recognize their role in supporting PA but sit within a wider system necessary for effective PA promotion; (iii) CNSs use several techniques to promote PA within their consultations; (iv) remaining challenges in PA promotion. The analysis resulted in 3 themes regarding CNSs' perspectives on the use of apps to promote PA within cancer care: (i) the influence of apps on access to PA support; (ii) the role of apps in self-directed PA; (iii) implementing apps in cancer care., Conclusions: The results of this study provide valuable insight into the CNS role and provide a number of important considerations for the development and implementation of PA interventions within cancer care, with a specific focus on smartphone-based interventions., Implications for Cancer Survivors: CNSs play an important role in PA promotion in cancer care and this research can inform the development of PA interventions delivered via smartphone app for people affected by cancer.

Background: There have been numerous efforts by health institutions and professionals to prevent and reduce medication errors., Objectives: The aim of this study was to identify in the literature the incidence, related factors, consequences, and prevention mechanisms of medication errors in the context of hematopoietic stem cell transplantation., Methods: This is a systematic review carried out in the databases LILACS, PubMed, PMC, EMBASE, and CINAHL databases, from January 11 to 13, 2017., Results: Eleven studies were included in this review and presented in 4 categories of analysis. (1) occurrence-most of the medication errors were related to administration and prescription; (2) related factors-multicausal, highlighting issues including polypharmacy, lack of double checking, and similarity between the medications' names; (3) consequences-the main ones were associated with adverse reactions, with prolonged hospitalization time as outcome; (4) preventive measures-related to safe practices in pharmacotherapy, such as double check and application of the 10 rights of medication administration., Conclusion: Medication administration is an activity of great responsibility for nursing; however, in order to achieve a decrease in medication errors, prevention strategies are necessary for the whole health team., Implications for Practice: Practice improvements are needed including establishing institutional drug administration protocols and keeping them updated, using a computerized prescription system, and promoting patient safety with staff.

Introduction: Early palliative care (PC) integrated with oncology care improves quality of life (QOL), depression symptoms, illness understanding, and end-of-life (EOL) care for patients with advanced lung cancer. The aims of this trial are to compare the effect of delivering early integrated PC through telehealth versus in-person on patient and caregiver outcomes. We hypothesize that both modalities for delivering early PC would be equivalent for improving patient QOL, communication about EOL care preferences with their oncologist, and length of stay in hospice. Methods: For this comparative effectiveness trial, we will enroll and randomize 1250 adult patients with advanced nonsmall cell lung cancer (NSCLC), who are not being treated with curative intent, to receive either early integrated telehealth or in-person PC at 20 cancer centers throughout the United States. Patients may also invite a family caregiver to participate in the study. Patients and their caregivers in both study groups meet at least every four weeks with a PC clinician from within 12 weeks of patient diagnosis of advanced NSCLC until death. Participants complete measures of QOL, mood, and quality of communication with oncologists at baseline before randomization and at 12, 24, 36, and 48 weeks. Information on health care utilization, including length of stay in hospice, will be collected from patients' health records. To test equivalence in outcomes between study groups, we will compute analysis of covariance and mixed linear models, controlling for baseline scores and study site. Study Implementation and Stakeholder Engagement: To ensure that this comparative effectiveness trial and findings are as patient centered and meaningful as possible, we have incorporated a robust patient and stakeholder engagement plan. Our stakeholder partners include (1) patients/families, (2) PC clinicians, (3) telehealth experts and clinician users, (4) representatives from health care systems and medical insurance providers, and (5) health care policy makers and advocates. These stakeholders will inform and provide feedback about every phase of study implementation.

Objective: The aim of this study is to examine the relationship of empathy and professional quality of life in cancer healthcare professionals., Methods: A Professional Quality of Life instrument measuring compassion satisfaction and compassion fatigue, and the Interpersonal Reactivity Index measuring empathy were distributed to healthcare professionals working in cancer care in the Republic of Ireland. Final analysis was conducted on 117 participants., Results: A quarter of participants experience high levels of compassion satisfaction, and a quarter are at risk of compassion fatigue. A positive correlation was found between personal distress and compassion fatigue, and a negative correlation was found between personal distress and compassion satisfaction. A positive correlation was found between empathic concern and secondary traumatic stress., Conclusion: These findings suggest that healthcare professionals working in cancer care are at risk of compassion fatigue. Also, healthcare professionals working in cancer care experience personal distress that may impact negatively on professional quality of life. Implications for practice include a need to identify those HCPs who are at risk of compassion fatigue. Background: Effective cancer pain management mandates precise attitude, assessment, skills, and knowledge. Health professionals' knowledge and attitudes concerning cancer pain management have often been referred to as insufficient., Aims: This study explored pain knowledge and attitudes of nurses working in oncology settings., Setting and Participants: Population 115 oncology nurses working at 2 hospitals in the United Arab Emirates., Methods: A descriptive, correlational, cross-sectional design was used to examine nurse knowledge and attitudes about pain using the Nurses' Attitude and Knowledge Survey Regarding Pain (NKASRP) survey. NKASRP score differences were examined among nurses with varying demographics, levels of pain education and experience., Results: The mean KASRP was 45%, significantly below the passing score of 80%. Pain management education was not found to have a significant impact on KASRP thus suggesting the need for more effective educational approaches to developing appropriate knowledge and attitudes towards pain among the nurses. No significant differences between sex, educational level, nursing and oncology experience, and nationality or religion were found., Interpretation and Conclusions: The study highlights the need for new initiatives targeting nurses working with cancer patients who are likely to experience significant pain. An ongoing need exists for more effective evidence-based educational programs in cancer pain management. Background: Breast cancer-related lymphedema (BCRL) is one of the most common complications among women with breast cancer., Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the oncology nurses' knowledge about lymphedema assessment, prevention, and management among women with breast cancer, and identify the relationships between oncology nurses' academic qualification, years of experience, and level of knowledge., Methods: A cross-sectional descriptive design was used. A sample of 150 participants from three institutions completed the study surveys., Results: 60% (N = 90) of the participants did not pass the knowledge test. 70% (N = 105) of the participants showed lack of knowledge regarding BCRL assessment and examination. The results showed that the participants had knowledge deficit regarding BCRL anatomy, pathophysiology, assessment and examination, risk factors, prevention interventions and precautions, patient education and consultation, and follow-up appointment. Importantly, 96% (N = 144) of the participants reported that they did not receive any continue education regarding BCRL. The results showed that was no significant relationship between years of experience, and level of knowledge (r = 0.25; n = 150; p < 0.51). A significant relationship was found between the nurses' knowledge according to their academic qualifications (𝜒2 = 6.21; p < 0.0001)., Conclusions: The results indicated that there is a need for a structured educational program to improve oncology nurses knowledge regarding BCRL.

There is little known about the experiences of former pediatric oncology patients that are currently working as pediatric oncology nurses. Literature reviews yielded no direct research studies involving this group of nurses. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to describe the experiences of these former oncology patients that are now oncology nurses. Eleven pediatric oncology nurses were interviewed for this study, and the following themes emerged: Awe and Awkwardness, Guilt and Gratitude, Sharing My Story, Wanting to Remember/Wanting to Forget, and Past Treatment/Current Challenges. The results of this study demonstrate the unique challenges these survivors face as they transition into their professional roles. Information about these nurses' experiences is important when considering their education and support throughout their careers.

Background: Cancer treatment is time-consuming and challenging for most patients, but particularly for those who live in geographically isolated areas. Satellite chemotherapy infusion centers offer a possible solution to geographic disparities in health care., Objectives: This article analyzes a satellite chemotherapy infusion center on the island of Martha's Vineyard in Massachusetts., Methods: Interviews were conducted with staff of the infusion department of Martha's Vineyard Hospital, which has partnered with the cancer center at Massachusetts General Hospital to offer a satellite chemotherapy infusion center for island residents., Findings: High-quality community hospitals are increasingly able to offer specialized oncology treatment and nursing care at greater convenience for patients through the use of satellite clinics.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of high levels of emotional exhaustion and depersonalization and low personal accomplishment in nursing professionals in oncology services., Methods: A meta-analytical study was performed. The search was carried out in March 2017 in Pubmed, CINAHL, Scopus, Scielo, Proquest, CUIDEN, and LILACS databases. Studies using Maslach Burnout Inventory for the assessment of burnout were included., Results: The total sample of oncology nurses was n = 9959. The total number of included studies was n = 17, with n = 21 samples for the meta-analysis of emotional exhaustion and n = 18 for depersonalization and low personal accomplishment. The prevalence of emotional exhaustion and of depersonalization was 30% (95% CI = 26%-33%) and 15% (95% CI = 9%-23%), respectively, and that of low personal performance was 35% (95% CI = 27%-43%)., Conclusions: The are many oncology nurses with emotional exhaustion and low levels of personal accomplishment. Advances in oncology care have transformed treatment approaches as genetics and genomics analyses promote implementation of personalized medicine. Genetics and genomics research in TP53 have demonstrated that some mutations are prevalent in minority populations. This has implications on personalized treatment approaches, particularly in early disease stages. The purpose of this article is to describe oncology nurses' role in applying these findings in practice to reduce disparities observed in cancer and survivorship care.

Background: Early outpatient palliative care consultations are recommended by clinical oncology guidelines globally. Despite these recommendations, it is unclear which components should be included in these encounters., Aim: Describe the evaluation and treatment recommendations made in early outpatient palliative care consultations., Design: Outpatient palliative care consultation chart notes were qualitatively coded and frequencies tabulated., Setting/participants: Outpatient palliative care consultations were automatically triggered as part of an early versus delayed randomized controlled trial (November 2010 to April 2013) for patients newly diagnosed with advanced cancer living in the rural Northeastern US., Results: In all, 142 patients (early = 70; delayed = 72) had outpatient palliative care consultations. The top areas addressed in these consultations were general evaluations-marital/partner status (81.7%), spirituality/emotional well-being (80.3%), and caregiver/family support (79.6%); symptoms-mood (81.7%), pain (73.9%), and cognitive/mental status (68.3%); general treatment recommendations-counseling (39.4%), maintaining current medications (34.5%), and initiating new medication (23.9%); and symptom-specific treatment recommendations-pain (22.5%), constipation (12.7%), depression (12.0%), advanced directive completion (43.0%), identifying a surrogate (21.8%), and discussing illness trajectory (21.1%). Compared to the early group, providers were more likely to evaluate general pain ( p = 0.035) and hospice awareness ( p = 0.005) and discuss/recommend hospice ( p = 0.002) in delayed group participants., Conclusion: Outpatient palliative care consultations for newly diagnosed advanced cancer patients can address patients' needs and provide recommendations on issues that might not otherwise be addressed early in the disease course. Future prospective studies should ascertain the value of early outpatient palliative care consultations that are automatically triggered based on diagnosis or documented symptom indicators versus reliance on oncologist referral.

This study aimed to explore an evidence-based nursing practice model of CRF management in hospitalized adult patients using the PARIHS evidence-implementation framework as the theoretical structure to provide guidance for similar nursing practices. The implementation of guideline evidence into clinical practice was conducted on the oncology and radiotherapy wards of a university-affiliated hospital. The process of integrating the guideline into the symptom management system of cancer patients was described. The impact of the evidence implementation was evaluated from three aspects: organizational innovations and outcome measures associated with nurses and with patients pre- and post-evidence implementation. During the implementation of evidence into practice on the wards, a nursing process, health education, a quality control sheet and CRF training courses were established. Through this implementation, compliance with evidence related to CRF increased significantly on the two wards, with that of ward B being higher than that of ward A. Regarding nursing outcomes, nursing knowledge, attitude and behavior scores with respect to CRF nursing care increased substantially after its application on the two wards, and the ward B nurses' scoring was higher than that of the ward A nurses. Qualitative analysis concerning the nurses suggested that leadership, patient concern about CRF management, and the need for professional development were the main motivators of the application, whereas the shortage and mobility of nursing human resources and insufficient communication between doctors and nurses were the main barriers. Additionally, most nurses felt more professional and confident about their work. Regarding patient outcomes, patient knowledge, attitude and behavior scores regarding CRF self-management increased significantly. Patients' post-implementation CRF was alleviated compared with the pre-implementation treatment cycle. The PARIHS framework may provide instructive guidance for the incorporation of evidence into practice, and the process-oriented framework might provide greater operational utility of the application.

Purpose/objectives: To evaluate the relevance of a five-dimensional model of clinical trial nursing practice in an oncology clinical trial nurse population.

., Sample: 167 oncology nurses throughout the United States, including 41 study coordinators, 35 direct care providers, and 91 dual-role nurses who provide direct patient care and trial coordination.
., Methods: Principal components analysis was used to determine the dimensions of oncology clinical trial nursing practice.
., Main Research Variables: Self-reported frequency of 59 activities.
., Findings: The results did not support the original five-dimensional model of nursing care but revealed a more multidimensional model.
., Conclusions: An analysis of frequency data revealed an eight-dimensional model of oncology research nursing, including care, manage study, expert, lead, prepare, data, advance science, and ethics.
., Implications for Nursing: This evidence-based model expands understanding of the multidimensional roles of oncology nurses caring for patients with cancer enrolled in clinical trials.

Objective: To examine the relationship between nurse knowledge, work environment, and registered nurse (RN) turnover in perinatal hospice and palliative care organizations., Methods: Using nurse intellectual capital theory, a multivariate analysis was conducted with 2007 National Home and Hospice Care Survey data., Results: Perinatal hospice and palliative care organizations experienced a 5% turnover rate. The professional experience of advanced practice nurses (APNs) was significantly related to turnover among RNs (β = -.032, P < .05). Compared to organizations with no APNs professional experience, clinical nurse specialists and nurse practitioners significantly reduced RN turnover by 3 percentage points. No other nurse knowledge or work environment variables were associated with RN turnover. Several of the control variables were also associated with RN turnover in the study; Organizations serving micropolitan (β = -.041, P < .05) and rural areas (β = -.037, P < .05) had lower RN turnover compared to urban areas. Organizations with a technology climate where nurses used electronic medical records had a higher turnover rate than those without (β = .036, P < .05)., Conclusion: The findings revealed that advanced professional experience in the form of APNs was associated with reductions in RN turnover. This suggests that having a clinical nurse specialist or nurse practitioner on staff may provide knowledge and experience to other RNs, creating stability within the organization.

Purpose: The increase in patients diagnosed with and living with cancer calls for the provision of quality nursing care within this paradigm, one that can reflect the complex needs of the patient that cancer and its treatments induce. The study aimed to evaluate the quality of oncology nursing care, as perceived, by hospitalized cancer patients in three European countries., Methods: This was a cross-sectional descriptive study. In-patients diagnosed with cancer were selected based on explicit inclusion and exclusion criteria. Data was collected with the Quality of Oncology Nursing Care Scale- QONCS, comprising of 34 items grouped in 5 domains. Sociodemographic data was also retrieved., Results: The sample included 610 patients receiving care in 2 hospitals in Cyprus (n = 274), 1 hospital in Greece (n = 144) and 2 hospitals in the Czech Republic (n = 192). Statistically significant differences were found between the three countries and across all domains of the QONCS, with the exception of the spiritual and religious care (p = 0.136). Age and days of treatment produced statistically significant differences across all the domains of the QONCS, whilst gender did not produced any statistically significant differences (p ranged from (0.136-0.369)., Conclusion: This is one of the first studies that provide evidence on the Quality of Nursing Care delivered to patients diagnosed with cancer in various European countries. Discrepancies were found between the participating countries.
