PROBLEM STATEMENT: To define the Oncology Nursing Society Research Agenda for 2024-2027. DESIGN: An iterative, multiple data sources consolidation through the Research Agenda Project Team. DATA SOURCES: Previous research priorities, literature review, stakeholder survey, and research priorities from other cancer care organizations and funding agencies. FINDINGS: 10 evergreen statements articulated foundational values for oncology nurse scientists, and 5 topics emerged as research priorities for the upcoming three years: Advance patient-centric, precision symptom science; provide evidence for safe and effective cancer care delivery models and support of the oncology nursing workforce; describe the impact of the environment on cancer care outcomes; integrate patient navigation into cancer care across the trajectory; and advance the use of innovative methodologies in oncology nursing research. IMPLICATIONS FOR NURSING: The Oncology Nursing Society Research Agenda is an effective resource for directing the organization's research vision. The clinical landscape for endometrial cancer in the UK is evolving to include new management guidelines and targeted treatment options. An understanding of current treatment and management practices in the UK will help services plan and adapt to upcoming changes. The purpose of this survey was to understand current and anticipated real-world practices for endometrial cancer care in the UK and potential areas for optimisation. Telephone interviews were conducted in November/December 2021 with UK-based healthcare professionals involved in endometrial cancer management. Questions were aligned with the British Gynaecological Cancer Society/European Society for Medical Oncology recommendations, covering the pathway from diagnosis and treatment to follow-up. A total of 63 healthcare professionals (HCPs) involved in the management of patients with endometrial cancer participated in telephone interviews. The results highlighted variations in management and treatment practices for endometrial cancer and suggest that current UK practice appears to diverge from national and international guidance in some instances. While somatic mismatch repair deficiency testing was used by 89.7% of respondents as mainstream testing, the survey highlighted a lack of access to other key molecular biomarker tests, such as polymerase epsilon (POLE) sequencing (used by only 9.8% of HCPs at the time of the survey). The results highlighted several perceived practical barriers to the swift adoption of new therapeutic options, including funding access, limited staff, treatment-related resources, staff education, and support. Purpose: To investigate the effectiveness of reminiscence therapy on anxiety, depression, and quality of life in adult cancer patients. Methods: This study is a systematic review and meta-analysis, including 16 randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and controlled clinical trials (CCTs), encompassing a total of 1948 participants. The sample sizes of the included studies ranged from 32 to 210, with results from 1852 participants being evaluated. Potential studies up to July 31, 2023, were searched across seven electronic literature databases, reference lists of similar reviews, gray literature, and the Clinical Trials Registry. Studies were required to meet the PICOS inclusion criteria. Two independent investigators assessed the risk of bias in the included studies using the Cochrane Collaboration Tool. Meta-analysis was conducted using RevMan 5.4 when data were available. This review is registered in the International Prospective Register of Systematic Reviews (PROSPERO) with the registration number CRD42024524176 (28/03/2024). Results: This meta-analysis included 16 articles; nine studies found that reminiscence therapy significantly reduced the anxiety scores with a standardized mean difference (SMD) of 0.80 (95% CI − 1.15, − 0.44) and depression scores with an SMD of 0.67 (95% CI − 0.94, − 0.4) (p < 0.001). In four studies, reminiscence therapy significantly improved quality of life with an SMD of 0.37 (95% CI 0.18, 0.56) (p < 0.001). Conclusions: Reminiscence therapy can be used by nurses as a nonpharmacological intervention to reduce anxiety and depression and improve quality of life in cancer patients during treatment, rehabilitation, and end-of-life periods. Aim: To learn from two jurisdictions with mature genomics‐informed nursing policy infrastructure—the United States (US) and the United Kingdom (UK)—to inform policy development for genomics‐informed oncology nursing practice and education in Canada. Design: Comparative document and policy analysis drawing on the 3i + E framework. Methods: We drew on the principles of a rapid review and identified academic literature, grey literature and nursing policy documents through a systematic search of two databases, a website search of national genomics nursing and oncology nursing organizations in the US and UK, and recommendations from subject matter experts on an international advisory committee. A total of 94 documents informed our analysis. Results: We found several types of policy documents guiding genomics‐informed nursing practice and education in the US and UK. These included position statements, policy advocacy briefs, competencies, scope and standards of practice and education and curriculum frameworks. Examples of drivers that influenced policy development included nurses' values in aligning with evidence and meeting public expectations, strong nurse leaders, policy networks and shifting healthcare and policy landscapes. Conclusion: Our analysis of nursing policy infrastructure in the US and UK provides a framework to guide policy recommendations to accelerate the integration of genomics into Canadian oncology nursing practice and education. Implications for the profession: Findings can assist Canadian oncology nurses in developing nursing policy infrastructure that supports full participation in safe and equitable genomics‐informed oncology nursing practice and education within an interprofessional context. The experiences of other countries demonstrate that change is incremental, and investment from strong advocates and collaborators can accelerate the integration of genomics into nursing. Background: The Nipple-Areola Complex (NAC) tattooing can restore physical and mental integrity after breast cancer, but it is not always easily accessible for women. This paper aims to report on the development of a multidisciplinary nurse-led service for NAC tattooing for women who underwent breast cancer surgery with NAC removal to allow its thorough review and replication. Methods: The Medical Research Council's framework for developing complex healthcare interventions was followed. According to the results of a literature review, and the context analysis, an initial intervention was planned. The Template for Intervention Description and Replication checklist was chosen to ensure the quality and completeness of the intervention description. Results: The Breast Unit and the Research departments were engaged; three nurse-tattooists were selected; the informative material was created and shared with patients, families and local associations, involving them actively. Finally, the setting and the materials were defined. A monthly schedule of activities was set: patients with the indication for NAC tattooing were contacted by the nurse case manager. Each treatment involves 3–4 sessions, 30–40 days apart, in an ambulatory setting. It consists of NAC shaping and tattooing with a dermographer and sterile needles. Conclusion: Implementing freely and equally multidisciplinary nurse-led clinics might provide this treatment ensuring the patient's quality of life and nurse competence. Because of the rising burden of cancer worldwide, cytotoxic drugs have become a significant threat to health and the environment. This investigation assessed the level of knowledge of oncology nurses regarding the risks associated with handling cytotoxic drugs and the management of cytotoxic waste and their impact on health and the environment. A qualitative study was conducted among oncology nurses at a Moroccan oncology centre. Most demonstrated a good understanding of cytotoxic drugs and their handling. But, there were notable deficiencies in foundational training. Occasional training sessions were offered, but they were considered insufficient in frequency and depth. The workload was identified as a major obstacle to proper safety protocol implementation. Although all participants recognised the dangers of improper disposal of cytotoxic waste, none had detailed knowledge of the specific environmental impacts. Background: Registered nurses (RNs) in oncology must cope with the suffering of patients, the inevitability of death and their own transience. This poses a possible risk for the development of burnout, which can result in low job satisfaction and ultimately an increased intention to leave the job. Our aim was to assess psychological distress in registered nurses working in oncology. Objective and method: A cross-sectional survey with the Oldenburger Burnout Inventory was presented to nurses within the German Cancer Society. It collected data on psychological distress via two subscales, exhaustion and disengagement. Socio-demographic data were assessed. Results: Among 83 participating nurses, we found a prevalence of high disengagement in 17 oncology nurses (20.48%) and high exhaustion (MExh>2.5 = burnout) in 44 (53.00%). Looking at the highest values of both scales, 18.08% of respondents were at high risk for psychological distress. There was a low correlation between disengagement and age (r = 0.331, p < 0.01). The risk of high disengagement among nurses older than 50 (n = 9, 52.94%) was three times higher than for those who were 50 or younger (n = 8, 47.06%) (RR = 8.642, 95% CI: 1.475–5.749, p < 0,01). Conclusion: This survey highlights a high rate of burnout among German oncology nurses. Interventions should be developed, implemented, and delivered in an age-appropriate manner. To ensure high-quality care and patient safety, oncology nurses should be offered preventive mental healthcare services later in their careers. Introduction Pain in pediatric oncology patients is often undertreated due to a lack of timely assessment and inefficient communication between health care workers. Improper pain assessment is a leading cause of poorly managed pain in children. In high-income countries, pediatric oncology nurses play a key role in developmentally appropriate pain assessment measures to identify potential management strategies. However, nurses in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) face a deficit of knowledge about pain assessment tools and management. Owing to differences in availability of resources, a disparity exists between health-related quality of life of cancer patients treated at public- and private-sector hospitals in Pakistan. Methodology The Indus Hospital and Health Network partnered with nine publicsector hospitals nationwide to improve pediatric oncology practices. Supported by the My Child Matters grant, training sessions were conducted for nurses at each publicsector pediatric oncology unit (POU) from March to December 2021. Pain assessment tools were provided. To assess retention and implementation of practices, a knowledge, attitudes, and practices questionnaire was distributed online to nurses at each POU. All responses remained anonymous. Results Fifty-four responses were recorded, 85% were female and most were between 26 and 30 years of age. Most of the participants held a diploma in nursing and were designated charge nurses with more than 6 years of experience. Forty nurses reported routinely assessing pain; the most common reason for not doing so was increased workload. Correlations were observed between routinely performing pain assessment and the number of patients per nurse, availability of formal credentialing or certifications at the institution and routinely performing pain assessment, availability of trainings focused on pain assessment and routinely performing pain assessment, and qualification of nurses and knowledge of nonpharmacological pain assessment methods. Conclusion Strategies to improve pain assessment knowledge and practices among pediatric oncology nurses in LMICs must be developed to improve patient care and clinical outcomes. Stress affects people's physiologic and mental well-being. Compounded stress from natural disasters, intergenerational trauma, stigma, and mistrust of the dominant society may lead to illness and potential oncologic disorders. The concepts of diversity, equity, and inclusion have become mainstays of nurses' interactions with patients. Nurses may need to support self-care for those experiencing intergenerational trauma and natural disasters, such as Native Hawai'ian and Other Pacific Islander (NHOPI) individuals. Oncology nurse residents write legacy letters to future cohorts in the 11th month as a reflection on their transition year, focusing on lessons learned and advice gleaned. This article explores poetry as an alternative to legacy letters. The limerick writing assignment was well received. Legacy messages provided a deeper understanding of residents' experiences, subsequently guiding curriculum improvement. Changes included beginning a dialogue in the first month on the importance of self-care, handling emotions, and incorporating evidence-based, cognitive behavioral skillsbuilding. Patients receiving early palliative care experience improved quality of life, may live longer, and may have earlier referrals to hospice. Caregivers with loved ones receiving early palliative care experience improved communication, decreased risk of caregiver burnout, and improved bereavement adjustment. Studies have shown that patients who received palliative care at diagnosis lived 2.5 months longer than those who did not; patients who received aggressive resuscitation or intensive care admission near the end of life had worse quality of life; and caregivers were three times more likely to develop depression following patient death for those who did not receive early palliative care. Verification of pregnancy status prior to initiating radiation treatment for cancer is important to preserve patient and fetal safety. However, many institutions lack clear guidelines for pregnancy screening prior to treatment initiation. A practice gap analysis conducted at an academic medical center revealed inconsistent pregnancy screening within the radiation oncology department, with 7% (N = 729) of eligible patients screened prior to initiating treatment. A nurse-driven policy was implemented based on recommendations from the American Society for Radiation Oncology and the National Comprehensive Cancer Network. BACKGROUND: About one-quarter of patients with advanced prostate cancer have alterations in homologous recombination repair (HRR) genes. In a global phase 3 study, talazoparib plus enzalutamide significantly improved progression-free survival in patients with HRR-deficient metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC). OBJECTIVES: This article reviews the role of oncology nurses and advanced practice providers (APPs) in administering talazoparib plus enzalutamide in patients with mCRPC. METHODS: This review and hypothetical case study illustrate the role of oncology nurses and APPs in the administration of talazoparib plus enzalutamide and the management of adverse events to ensure safe and effective use in clinical practice. Advances in genomic science directly affect cancer care. Mastery of foundational concepts is necessary to understand the rationale for many aspects of cancer care, including prevention, surveillance, and treatment of malignancy. Genomic terminology is complex and can easily be confused or even misused. BACKGROUND: Amivantamab is an epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) and MET bispecific antibody approved for certain patients with advanced non-small cell lung cancer with EGFR variant. Cutaneous toxicities are known on-target effects of EGFR inhibition. OBJECTIVES: This article describes the occurrence and management of cutaneous toxicities in patients whose disease progressed on platinum chemotherapy treated with amivantamab. METHODS: Post hoc analysis evaluated incidence, severity, and time to first onset of rash and paronychia. Five nurses and advanced practice providers were interviewed. FINDINGS: Of 380 patients, 296 (78%) experienced treatment-related rash and/or paronychia. Paronychia (43%), rash (36%), and dermatitis acneiform (35%) were most frequent, with scalp rash reported by 17%. Treatment modifications because of rash and paronychia were infrequent. Nurses and advanced practice providers collaborate with physicians to manage cutaneous toxicities by administering comedications, modifying amivantamab dose, and educating patients. The study aimed to evaluate the ethical dilemmas faced by nurses who provide care to patients with hematologic cancer and determine their coping mechanisms using a phenomenological approach. This qualitative study was conducted with 35 nurses employed in clinics specializing in hematologic cancer patient care, living in diverse regions of Turkey, using semistructured, in-depth interviews through the WhatsApp mobile application. The snowball sampling technique was utilized to identify participants, and interviews continued until data saturation was achieved. All interviews were recorded and subsequently transcribed. Data analysis was conducted using Colaizzi's phenomenological analysis method, with the study adhering to the COREQ (Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research) checklist for reporting. In the analysis of the data, 2 categories (ethical dilemma situations and coping experiences) and 6 subthemes (treatment, care, professional values and beliefs, emotions, struggling with emotional burdens, and psychosocial approach) emerged. According to the results, nurses responsible for hematologic cancer patients struggle with ethical dilemmas in healthcare delivery and face challenges in effectively addressing them, which could potentially impact the quality of healthcare provided by nurses. Background: Postoperative pneumonia is a common but serious complication in patients with lung cancer. This meta-analysis aims to evaluate the effect of respiratory exercise on reducing postoperative pneumonia in patients with lung cancer and to provide a reliable basis for clinical treatment and nursing of patients with lung cancer. Methods: Two reviewers searched PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, China Knowledge Network, Wanfang, and Weipu databases. We searched for the randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published in Chinese or English on the breathing exercises in patients with lung cancer up to January 30, 2024. The quality of the literature was evaluated with the Cochrane Risk of Bias Tool 2 (ROB 2). RevMan 5.3 software was used for meta-analysis. Results: Eleven RCTs with 1429 patients with lung cancer were included, and 710 patients received breathing exercises. The meta-analysis results showed that breathing exercises could significantly reduce the incidence of postoperative pneumonia [RR = 0.35, 95%CI (0.25, 0.51)], improve the FEV1 [MD = − 0.49, 95%CI (− 0.73, − 0.24)], FVC [MD = − 0.59, 95%CI (− 0.83, − 0.35)] in patients with lung cancer (all P < 0.05). There were significant differences in the incidence of pneumonia for patients undergoing breathing exercises with single exercise time ≥ 15 min (RR = 0.37, 95%CI 0.24 ~ 0.62), breathing exercises for 1 week (RR = 0.29, 95%CI 0.16 ~ 0.55) or for 2 weeks (RR = 0.48, 95%CI 0.28 ~ 0.85) and breathing exercises > 4 times (RR = 0.36, 95%CI 0.23 ~ 0.57) per day (all P < 0.05). Conclusion: Breathing exercises have shown the capacity to augment pulmonary function in patients with lung cancer, concurrently mitigating the risk of postoperative pneumonia. Background: Effective communication between nurses and cancer patients is essential for patient satisfaction and optimal health outcomes in outpatient oncology settings. This study explored the communication experiences of Iranian cancer patients receiving outpatient treatment. Methods: Semi-structured interviews were conducted with 14 adult cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy, radiotherapy, or follow-up treatment at an outpatient clinic in Urmia, Iran. Qualitative content analysis was used to analyze the data. This study adhered to the standards set forth in the Consolidated Criteria for Reporting Qualitative Research (COREQ) checklist. Results: Three main categories emerged from the interviews with Iranian cancer patients: communication dynamics, barriers to communication, and effective communication outcomes. Patients expressed a desire for nurses who actively listen, provide emotional support, and offer thorough education about their disease and treatment options. However, they also identified barriers to effective communication, including negative nurse behaviors (such as lack of empathy), heavy workloads, gender and language discordance, and logistical challenges within the clinic setting. When communication was positive, patients reported increased commitment to their treatment plans, improved coping mechanisms, reduced stress levels, and greater satisfaction with their overall care. Conclusions: This study revealed the multifaceted nature of communication in outpatient oncology settings from the patient's perspective. Findings underscore the need for interventions that enhance nurse communication skills, address workload issues, promote cultural sensitivity, and optimize clinic logistics. Objective: This study aims to examine the impact of nurses' nursing information competence on their creative self-efficacy and innovation behavior, and to investigate its role as a mediating factor between these two elements. Methods: A survey was conducted from July to September 2023 involving 1,200 nurses from two tertiary-level oncology specialty hospitals in Beijing, selected through convenience sampling. Instruments used included the Creative Self-Efficacy Scale, Nursing Information Competence Assessment Scale, and Nurses' Innovative Behavior Scale. Data analysis was conducted using SPSS 25.0 and R 4.1.2; AMOS26 was used to construct structural equation models and Bootstrap method was used to test the mediating hypotheses. Results: Out of the distributed questionnaires, 1,166 were valid, yielding an effective response rate of 97.16%. Pearson correlation analysis revealed significant correlations between innovation self-efficacy, nursing information competence, and nurses' innovative behaviors (P < 0.001). The Bootstrap method indicated that nursing information competence serves as a mediating factor in the relationship between creative self-efficacy and innovative behaviors, contributing to 24.5% of the observed effect. Additionally, regression analysis suggested that nursing information competence moderates the relationship between creative self-efficacy and innovation behavior. Conclusion: The findings suggest that nursing information competence not only mediates but also moderates the relationship between creative self-efficacy and innovative behavior. Enhancing nurses' information competence could therefore foster creative self-efficacy, leading to an increase in innovative behavior and, subsequently, improvements in the quality of oncology nursing care. Background: In the last two decades, the use of oral anticancer agents (OAAs) has increased in cancer patients. Despite this, patients and their caregivers face some challenging issues (side effects, drug-to-drug interactions, etc.) related to OAA administration. The three dimensions of self-care by Riegel et al., self-care maintenance (i.e., stability of patient condition), self-care monitoring (i.e., detection of side effects), and self-care management (i.e., management of side effects), may be implemented to avoid negative outcomes. However, knowledge of self-care determinants is necessary to recognise people at risk of poor self-care behaviours. Aims: Determine which are the predictors of self-care maintenance, self-care monitoring and self-care management in patients with cancer taking OAA. Methods: A systematic review with narrative synthesis was conducted. We included studies on adult patients with cancer using any kind of oral anticancer agent and describing a predictor of self-care. The search was performed on PubMed, CINAHL/PsycINFO, and Web of Science. Results: Of 3,061 records, 45 studies were included in this review. Forty-six predictors organised into 14 categories were identified. In general, all studies focused only on adherence, considered as a self-care maintenance component, and none of them focused on other dimensions of self-care. The predictors of OAA adherence most reported were age, side effects, and socioeconomic factors (e.g., insurance status, and annual income). Conclusions: This systematic review highlighted the literature gap on the analysis of determinants of self-care behaviours in patients taking OAAs. This element could be a starting point for future research that can provide elements to support the oncology nursing research agenda, aimed at recognising patients at risk of poor self-care. The article discusses the fifth annual webinar focused on research regarding the occupational exposure of nurses to hazardous drugs and the protective benefits of closed system transfer devices (CSTDs). Topics include research findings on occupational exposure to cytotoxic agents, implementation case studies of closed systems for systemic anti-cancer therapy (SACT), and recent guidance and regulations addressing the safe handling of hazardous drugs.

Aims: This evaluation combines clinical and non-clinical collaborative breast referral triage to gain an understanding relating to the value of triage, by identifying 'suspected cancer' and 'cancer not suspected' populations, improve the patient pathway, and facilitate optimised resource availability. Method: An iterative service improvement method was used, with distinct phases of the process outlined to facilitate testing of ideas. The evaluation ran for 13 weeks in 2022. Regular team member meetings were arranged to discuss and agree improvement aims and outcomes. Findings: A triage flowchart was developed collaboratively, and subsequently adopted by the non-clinical booking team. Bespoke clinics were established, demonstrating no evidence of increased risk to patients, and meeting 28-day Faster Diagnosis Standard (FDS) requirements. Conclusion: breast referral triage of 'suspected cancer' and 'cancer not suspected' patients, using a clinical and non-clinical collaborative approach facilitates improved service visibility, prioritisation, management, and measurement. Background: Nowadays, Thoracic Surgery is technologically advanced; therefore, it also focuses its attention on nursing care. The aim of the study is to evaluate the effect of the assessment of a dedicated team of nurses (DTN) in all onco-hematological patients undergoing VATS lobectomy for lung cancer on the outcome of the patient, preventing pressure injuries, reducing perioperative stress, duration of operations, complications, and hospital stay times. Methods: We performed a single-center observational retrospective study, including 31 DTN and 760 onco-hematological patients who underwent thoracic surgery between 30 October 2018 and 30 June 2023 at "Vanvitelli" University of Naples. Results: DTN ensures good nursing care before, during, and after surgery. Operative time was reduced by approximately 20 min, decreasing hospital infections in the DNT period and reducing intraoperative complications such as bleeding and hospital costs (p < 0.05). AbstractFlushing uncovered toilets in hospitals has been shown to produce toilet plume aerosols (TPA) in a wide size ranging from nanometers to micrometers. Studies have shown that TPA can carry infectious pathogens and hazardous drugs used in cancer treatment. To mitigate the risk of exposure, some researchers have recommended covering the toilet during flushing, and guidelines from the Oncology Nursing Society have specifically recommended covering the toilet when flushing excreta from patients receiving chemotherapy. Because existing literature primarily focused on controlled laboratory settings or small case studies, there has been a need for a real-world, multi-center study in clinical settings to measure TPA by flushing both covered and un-covered toilets. To address this gap, the authors initiated a multicenter study to measure TPA in clinical settings and to assess the effectiveness of a commercially available, portable, and reusable toilet cover. The study enrolled 15 hospital centers (145 toilets) in nine U.S. states which included seven National Cancer Institute (NCI)-designated comprehensive cancer centers. The particle number concentrations were measured using a TSI optical particle counter (TSI 9306) with six size bins (0.3 to 25.0 µm) positioned 22 inches above the floor. The results showed that the ambient particle number concentrations in the HEPA-filtered floor bathrooms (376 ± 857#/L) are significantly lower than the non-HEPA-filtered ones (7,432 ± 9,207#/L). The mean particle number concentrations generated by flushing are 3,951 ± 8,606#/L with a median of 1,916#/L, ranging from 136#/L to 71,959#/L. Results with cover demonstrated a reduction in the total number of particles of 101 ± 11% regardless of the HEPA filter usage (p = 0.0002 in the Mann-Whitney U test). Mixed-effects modeling revealed that the overall level of particle reduction is substantial regardless of state (nine total), floor levels, flush volumes, and inpatient versus outpatient. This study provides evidence supporting the use of the tested portable toilet cover as an intervention to reduce healthcare workers’, patients’, and visitors’ exposure to toilet plume aerosols in clinical settings. Background: Early detection through screening dramatically improves lung cancer survival rates, including among war Veterans, who are at heightened risk. The effectiveness of low dose computed tomography scans in lung cancer screening (LCS) prompted the Veteran's Affairs Lung Precision Oncology Program (VA LPOP) to increase screening rates. We aimed to develop an adaptive population health tool to determine adequate resource allocation for the program, with a specific focus on primary care providers, nurse navigators, and radiologists. Methods: We developed a tool using C + + that uses inputs that represents the process of the VA LCS program in Ann Arbor, Michigan to calculate FTEs of human resource needs to screen a given population. Further, we performed a sensitivity analysis to understand how resource needs are impacted by changes in population, screening eligibility, and time allocated for the nurse navigators' tasks. Results: Using estimates from the VA LCS Program as demonstrative inputs, we determined that the greatest number of full-time equivalents required were for radiologists, followed by nurse navigators and then primary care providers, for a target population of 75,000. An increase in the population resulted in a linear increase of resource needs, with radiologists experiencing the greatest rate of increase, followed by nurse navigators and primary care providers. These resource requirements changed with primary care providers, nurse navigators and radiologists demonstrating the greatest increase when 1–20, 20–40 and > 40% of Veterans accepted to be screened respectively. Finally, when increasing the time allocated to check eligibility by the nurse navigator from zero to three minutes, there was a linear increase in the full-time equivalents required for the nurse navigator. Conclusion: Variation of resource utilization demonstrated by our user facing tool emphasizes the importance of tailored strategies to accommodate specific population demographics and downstream work. We will continue to refine this tool by incorporating additional variability in system parameters, resource requirements following an abnormal test result, and resource distribution over time to reach steady state. Quantitative data were collected through a cross‐sectional survey and the ACP communication index from December 2021 to January 2022. The qualitative phase consisted of 19 interviews conducted between May and July 2022, which were thematically analysed to elucidate the challenges in ACP practices.Quantitative findings revealed a low frequency of ACP communication among Chinese oncology nurses. Qualitative analysis identified four themes: lack of optimal timing, passive engagement of patients or families, reluctance of healthcare professionals and unsupported policies.The study concluded that identified challenges compromise the effectiveness of ACP practices among Chinese oncology nurses. Despite the effectiveness of cancer screening (CS) in providing timely diagnoses and early treatments, the participation of citizens remains very low in particular in Southern Italy. This study aims to investigate the meanings that intervene in the relationship between the individual and their active participation in CSs within public healthcare. A total of 101 ad hoc semi‐structured interviews were collected with CS users in public service of Campania Region, Italy. The interviews were analyzed through a qualitative–quantitative methodology by T‐Lab software. A cluster analysis and multiple matching analysis were conducted. Findings show five clusters: prevention as a sensory and emotional burden; prevention as a strategy to manage the hereditary risk of death; individual's internal demand for health; the times and places of prevention; and the concreteness of doing prevention; and two factors: from the risk of disease diagnosis to preventive measures and from external healthcare settings to internal self‐care settings. Findings shed light on how to construct better well‐being promotion strategies and foster a subjective health and prevention demand accounting for the continuous experiences of those participating in CSs to encourage greater citizen engagement. Background: Oncology nurses constantly provide emotional support to patients and are confronted with their suffering, which represents chronic stress leading to the development of burnout syndrome. Aim: This study aimed to evaluate the prevalence of burnout and identify associated factors in a sample of oncology nurses. Methods: We conducted a descriptive cross‐sectional study with 70 oncology nurses at the Salah Azaiez Institute of Oncology in Tunisia. Burnout was assessed using the Maslach Burnout Inventory Human Service Survey. This study follows the STrengthening the Reporting of OBservational studies in Epidemiology (STROBE) Guidelines. Results: Burnout affected 60 nurses (85.7%), with a high level in 20% of cases. High scores of emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation, and low personal accomplishment were recorded in 65.7%, 50% and 25.7% respectively. Emotional exhaustion was associated with higher age, marital status, having 2 or 3 or more dependent children, number of patients under care exceeding 15, professional experience and history of psychiatric problems. Depersonalisation was correlated with age, marital status, professional grade and history of psychiatric problems. Low levels of personal accomplishment increased with the number of patients under care, history of psychiatric problems and the regret of professional choice. Conclusion: Burn‐out is a reality in oncology hospital with an alarming rate. Interventions including rationalisation of workload, support groups, training in emotion and stress management would improve the mental health of these nurses and increase their performance. The screening for burnout should be included as a regular practice in health promotion programmes for oncology health professionals, particularly for a vulnerable subgroup that possesses the risk mentioned above factors. The Nurse Navigator is a highly specialized nurse with technical and non-technical skills that offers individualized assistance to cancer patients, their family and caregivers to overcome health system barriers and facilitate access to care. This role was introduced in the General Surgery Unit of the Madonna del Soccorso Hospital in San Benedetto del Tronto from 1st January 2023. The primary endpoint is to compare the times taken for each step of the diagnostic-therapeutic pathway comparing the study group followed by Oncology Nurse Navigator (ONN) and the group not followed by this role. The secondary endpoints, only for the study group, were the number of patient contacts with the ONN and the time slots; the number of examinations and consultations organized by ONN; the evaluation of patient satisfaction at discharge; the number and type of problems noted during follow-up contact at 7 and 30 days after discharge. A prospective court study with historical control was conducted from 1st January 2023 in Madonna del Soccorso Hospital, Italy. The study group consists of all cancer patients cared for by ONN. The control group was created by selecting the same number of patients as the study group but taken care of in the previous 3 years (from 2020 to 2022) and, therefore, without the presence of the Nurse Navigator. The control group data come from clinical documentation. The number and time slots of contact with the ONN were recorded through the use of a company mobile phone active 24/7 through phone calls and messages. The number of examinations and consultations is known through online requests. The satisfaction assessment was carried out through the use of externally validated questionnaire Patient Satisfaction with Cancer Care (PSCC). The follow-up was performed by telephone and recorded on documentation according to established parameters. A total of 200 patients were analyzed. Both the study and control groups included 100 patients each. The average time between the first contact with the patient and the execution of the diagnostic test was 7 days in the cases compared to 28 days in the control group. The waiting time for the Multi-Disciplinary Team discussion (MDT) was 3 days for the study group compared to 6 days in the control group. The average time taken for the first oncological visit was 3 days in the study group compared to 18 days in the controls. The time from first contact to the operating session was 20 days compared to 45 in controls. Each patient had an average of 10 phone calls with the ONN. For all patients accompanied at the first diagnosis, at least 2 radiological and laboratory tests were organized. Oncology appointment for treatment evaluations after delivery of the histological report was communicated within a maximum of 3 working days. A patient satisfaction questionnaire achieved a response rate of 100%, with an average score of 87.0/90. The telephone follow-up had a response rate of 100% of patients and revealed a decrease in problems at the 30-day check-up compared to that of 7 days after discharge. (Activity of Daily Living 20% vs 8%; nutritional problems 40% vs 21%, pain 18% vs 2%; surgical wounds 45% vs 1%; mobilization 8% vs 0%). The data demonstrate that ONN service improves the quality and outcomes of surgical oncology patients' pathway. The aim of this study was to qualitatively describe, from a practitioner's perspective, the process by which nurses struggle to support a patient with end-of-life cancer with frequent nurse calls and gain positive insights through two methodologies: AR and the case study method. The participants were four ward nurses who supported a patient receiving end-of-life cancer in his 80s. The participants engaged in monthly group work and practical training sessions, which included facilitators, to reflect on and develop care plans. Based on these activities, care was provided to the patient. After the intervention period, the patient's course and practice was documented and analysed qualitatively. The intervention significantly improved the nurses' ability to support inpatients with many needs through careful observation, enhancement, and practical skill improvement. This process resulted in a better understanding of patient needs, proactive skill development, enhanced team performance, and an innovative care-delivery system that resonated throughout the ward. This study demonstrated a successful strategy for nurses to improve support for high-need inpatients, emphasising the importance of attentive care, proactive skill improvement, and a team-based approach to healthcare innovation. There are three million people living with cancer in the UK, which is predicted to rise to nearly 3.5 million by 2025 (Macmillan Cancer Support, 2024). The GP Contract (NHSE Contract Letter 2024/25) has protected the cancer indicators in the Quality Outcomes Framework (QOF), which are that every person should be offered an opportunity to discuss their diagnosis and be informed of the support available to them from primary care within three months of diagnosis, and a structured cancer care review should be offered within twelve months of diagnosis. General practice nurses (GPNs) already have expertise in long-term condition management and could deliver the same for people living with cancer, but most do not feel confident to do so. Aim: To investigate the current state and influencing factors of core competence of oncology specialist nurses as well as the relationship between core competence and perceived professional benefits. Design: A cross‐sectional correlational survey. Methods: This questionnaire survey was conducted with oncology specialist nurses working in a Grade III A (tertiary) Public Cancer Hospital in Jinan, China in March 2021. Based on informed consent, a convenience sampling of 350 nurses participated in the study, with 322 valid questionnaires collected. Using IBM SPSS21.0, the data were analysed to perform descriptive statistics, analysis of variance (ANOVA), multiple stepwise regression analysis and Pearson's correlation analysis. Results: The overall average score of nurses' core competence was 224.28 ± 7.95, a medium level and the overall average score of their perceived professional benefits was 132.99 ± 5.05. Nurses' core competence was positively correlated with perceived professional benefits. The differences in professional title, education, working years and perceived professional benefits were statistically significant. Conclusion: The findings indicated that nurses' perceived professional benefit is an important factor affecting core competence. Nursing managers who take main responsibility for the quality of care should adopt measures to increase perceived professional benefits, which not only promote nurses' job satisfaction and happiness, but also enhance the development of their core competence and the quality of cancer care as well. Abstract Background The Nipple-Areola Complex (NAC) tattooing can restore physical and mental integrity after breast cancer, but it is not always easily accessible for women. This paper aims to report on the development of a multidisciplinary nurse-led service for NAC tattooing for women who underwent breast cancer surgery with NAC removal to allow its thorough review and replication. Methods The Medical Research Council’s framework for developing complex healthcare interventions was followed. According to the results of a literature review, and the context analysis, an initial intervention was planned. The Template for Intervention Description and Replication checklist was chosen to ensure the quality and completeness of the intervention description. Results The Breast Unit and the Research departments were engaged; three nurse-tattooists were selected; the informative material was created and shared with patients, families and local associations, involving them actively. Finally, the setting and the materials were defined. A monthly schedule of activities was set: patients with the indication for NAC tattooing were contacted by the nurse case manager. Each treatment involves 3–4 sessions, 30–40 days apart, in an ambulatory setting. It consists of NAC shaping and tattooing with a dermographer and sterile needles. Conclusion Implementing freely and equally multidisciplinary nurse-led clinics might provide this treatment ensuring the patient’s quality of life and nurse competence. The NAC tattooing is a complex intervention that represents the final part of the breast cancer surgical care pathway.

Abstract Background The post-insertion maintenance of central venous catheters(CVCs)is a common, vital procedure undertaken by nurses. Existing literature lacks a comprehensive review of evidence adoption for CVCs post-insertion maintenance specifically within the oncology context. This investigation assessed evidence-based practice by oncology nurses in the care of CVCs, elucidating facilitators and obstacles to this adoption process. Methods This was a sequential explanatory mixed methods study, executed from May 2022 to April 2023, adhering to the GRAMMS checklist. The study commenced with a cross-sectional study through clinical observation that scrutinized the adoption of scientific evidence for CVC maintenance, analyzing 1314 records from five hospitals in China. Subsequently, a semi-structured, in-depth interview with nurses based on the i-PARIHS framework was conducted to ascertain facilitators and barriers to evidence adoption for CVCs post-insertion maintenance. Fifteen nurses were recruited through purposive sampling. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize quantitative data, while content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. Results An overall compliance rate of 90.0% was observed; however, two domains exhibited a lower adoption rate of less than 80%, namely disinfection of infusion connector and disinfection of skin and catheter. Three barriers and two facilitators were discerned from the interviews. Barriers encompassed (1) difficulty in accessing the evidence, (2) lack of involvement from nurse specialists, and (3) challenges from internal and external environments. Facilitators comprised (1) the positive attitudes of specialist nurses toward evidence application, and (2) the formation of a team specializing in intravenous therapy within hospitals. Conclusion There exists a significant opportunity to improve the adoption of evidence-based practices for CVC maintenance. Considering the identified barriers and facilitators, targeted interventions should be conceived and implemented at the organizational level to augment oncology evidence-based practice, especially the clinical evidence pertinent to infection control protocols. Abstract Background Improving cancer survival rates highlights post-treatment fertility implications for reproductive-aged women. To provide fertility care for cancer survivors, nurses need instruments to assess and communicate reproductive concerns with cancer survivors and healthcare providers. This study aimed to translate the Reproductive Concerns after Cancer Scale (RCAC) into Korean and examine its psychometric properties in young female cancer survivors in South Korea. Methods The RCAC was translated into Korean, involving expert bilingual translators for initial translation and reverse translation for cultural and semantic accuracy. In detail, the RCAC was translated into Korean and evaluated in a preliminary study involving 10 cancer survivors. Subsequently, a revised version of the instrument was administered to 182 cancer survivors and a psychometric evaluation was conducted. The process included verifying content validity, and then assessing construct validity using exploratory factor analysis and criterion validity. The reliability of the instrument was quantified by measuring its internal consistency using Cronbach’s alpha. Results The translated RCAC demonstrated an item-level content validity index of 1.0 and a scale-level index of 1.0. The content was finalized based on preliminary survey findings, which revealed that all participants thought the instrument was clear. The Korean version of the RCAC demonstrated a satisfactory level of validity per exploratory factor analysis, which resulted in a 14-item instrument consisting of three subscales: “fertility potential” (six items), “health problem” (five items), and “acceptance” (three items). The items and subscales explained 57.6% of the variance. Criterion validity was confirmed through an analysis of the correlation between the Korean version of the RCAC and both the FACT-G (r = -0.36, p < .001) and PHQ-9 (r = 0.38, p < .001). Cronbach’s alpha coefficient of the Korean version of the RCAC was 0.83. Conclusions The Korean version of the RCAC is a valid and reliable instrument for assessing reproductive concerns in female cancer survivors. Thus, this instrument can be used to provide tailored care to female cancer survivors of reproductive age by clarifying and assess their reproductive concerns. This may support the development of guidelines or policies to provide care for those with reproductive concerns who require nursing care.

In this study, we investigated the prevalence of mental health problems among patients with cancer and whether oncology nurse navigation improved their mental health outcomes and medical experience. In this randomized controlled clinical trial, we recruited 128 outpatients with cancer via purposive sampling from a teaching hospital in northern Taiwan. Participants were randomly assigned to the navigation group (N = 61) or the usual care group (N = 67). Data were collected from January 2019 to July 2020 using questionnaires, including the self-reported Distress Thermometer, Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale, Demoralization Scale, and Patient Assessment of Chronic Illness Care. Data were collected at baseline and after three and six months of the intervention. Descriptive and analytical statistical analyses were performed. The prevalence rates of anxiety, depression, distress, and demoralization were 17.9%, 15.7%, 29.7%, and 29.7%, respectively. After three months, the participants in the navigation group exhibited significantly reduced levels of anxiety, demoralization, and emotional distress (reduced by 92%, 75%, and 58%, respectively) and reported a better medical experience (odds ratio = 1.40) than those in the usual care group.

Therefore, nursing records should reflect, clarify, and enable spiritual‐care follow‐up.The aim of this study is to explore how spiritual care is expressed in nursing records in cancer care.This study adopted a hermeneutic approach, and a qualitative content analysis was used to explore the nursing records of 43 inpatients with cancer from Norway. Ethical approval was obtained, and the privacy of the patients and healthcare professionals was safeguarded in line with the applicable legislation.Spiritual care was rarely reported in the nursing records (i.e., the nursing care plans and the progress notes). However, traces of spiritual care appeared in the records of everyday nursing. Four themes emerged from the analysis: (1) relieving life pain and mitigating loss, (2) facilitating faith support, (3) welcoming family and friends, and (4) sustaining normality and sharing joy.This study showed that the nursing records of cancer care seldom expressed spiritual care concerning patients' life pain, loss, or faith support. Increasing nurses' competencies in mapping, documenting, and attending to spiritual care, as well as overcoming the limitations of documentation systems, could help address the spiritual needs of cancer patients. Background: The Stop Cancer PAIN Trial was a phase III pragmatic stepped wedge cluster randomised controlled trial which compared effectiveness of screening and guidelines with or without implementation strategies for improving pain in adults with cancer attending six Australian outpatient comprehensive cancer centres (n = 688). A system for pain screening was introduced before observation of a 'control' phase. Implementation strategies introduced in the 'intervention' phase included: (1) audit of adherence to guideline recommendations, with feedback to clinical teams; (2) health professional education via an email-administered 'spaced education' module; and (3) a patient education booklet and self-management resource. Selection of strategies was informed by the Capability, Opportunity and Motivation Behaviour (COM-B) Model (Michie et al., 2011) and evidence for each strategy's stand-alone effectiveness. A consultant physician at each centre supported the intervention as a 'clinical champion'. However, fidelity to the intervention was limited, and the Trial did not demonstrate effectiveness. This paper reports a sub-study of the Trial which aimed to identify factors inhibiting or enabling fidelity to inform future guideline implementation initiatives. Methods: The qualitative sub-study enabled in-depth exploration of factors from the perspectives of personnel at each centre. Clinical champions, clinicians and clinic receptionists were invited to participate in semi-structured interviews. Analysis used a framework method and a largely deductive approach based on the COM-B Model. Results: Twenty-four people participated, including 15 physicians, 8 nurses and 1 clinic receptionist. Coding against the COM-B Model identified 'capability' to be the most influential component, with 'opportunity' and 'motivation' playing largely subsidiary roles. Findings suggest that fidelity could have been improved by: considering the readiness for change of each clinical setting; better articulating the intervention's value proposition; defining clinician roles and responsibilities, addressing perceptions that pain care falls beyond oncology clinicians' scopes of practice; integrating the intervention within existing systems and processes; promoting patient-clinician partnerships; investing in clinical champions among senior nursing and junior medical personnel, supported by medical leaders; and planning for slow incremental change rather than rapid uptake. Conclusions: Future guideline implementation interventions may require a 'meta-implementation' approach based on complex systems theory to successfully integrate multiple strategies. Background: The post-insertion maintenance of central venous catheters(CVCs)is a common, vital procedure undertaken by nurses. Existing literature lacks a comprehensive review of evidence adoption for CVCs post-insertion maintenance specifically within the oncology context. This investigation assessed evidence-based practice by oncology nurses in the care of CVCs, elucidating facilitators and obstacles to this adoption process. Methods: This was a sequential explanatory mixed methods study, executed from May 2022 to April 2023, adhering to the GRAMMS checklist. The study commenced with a cross-sectional study through clinical observation that scrutinized the adoption of scientific evidence for CVC maintenance, analyzing 1314 records from five hospitals in China. Subsequently, a semi-structured, in-depth interview with nurses based on the i-PARIHS framework was conducted to ascertain facilitators and barriers to evidence adoption for CVCs post-insertion maintenance. Fifteen nurses were recruited through purposive sampling. Descriptive statistics were used to summarize quantitative data, while content analysis was used to analyze qualitative data. Results: An overall compliance rate of 90.0% was observed; however, two domains exhibited a lower adoption rate of less than 80%, namely disinfection of infusion connector and disinfection of skin and catheter. Three barriers and two facilitators were discerned from the interviews. Barriers encompassed (1) difficulty in accessing the evidence, (2) lack of involvement from nurse specialists, and (3) challenges from internal and external environments. Facilitators comprised (1) the positive attitudes of specialist nurses toward evidence application, and (2) the formation of a team specializing in intravenous therapy within hospitals. Conclusion: There exists a significant opportunity to improve the adoption of evidence-based practices for CVC maintenance. Considering the identified barriers and facilitators, targeted interventions should be conceived and implemented at the organizational level to augment oncology evidence-based practice, especially the clinical evidence pertinent to infection control protocols. Background: Supportive oncology (SO) care reduces symptom severity, admissions, and costs in patients with advanced cancer. This study examines the impact of SO care on utilization and costs. Methods: Retrospective analysis of utilization and costs comparing patients enrolled in SO versus three comparison cohorts who did not receive SO. Using claims, the authors estimated differences in health care utilization and cost between the treatment group and comparison cohorts. The treatment group consisting of patients treated for cancer at an National Cancer Institute‐designated cancer center who received SO between January 2018 and December 2019 were compared to an asynchronous cohort that received cancer care before January 2018 (n = 60), a contemporaneous cohort with palliative care receiving SO care from other providers in the Southeastern Pennsylvania region during the program period (n = 86), and a contemporaneous cohort without palliative care consisting of patients at other cancer centers who were eligible for but did not receive SO care (n = 393). Results: At 30, 60, and 90 days post‐enrollment into SO, the treatment group had between 27% and 70% fewer inpatient admissions and between 16% and 54% fewer emergency department visits (p <.05) compared to non‐SO cohorts. At 90 days following enrollment in SO care, total medical costs were between 4.4% and 24.5% lower for the treatment group across all comparisons (p <.05). Conclusions: SO is associated with reduced admissions, emergency department visits, and total costs in advanced cancer patients. Developing innovative reimbursement models could be a cost‐effective approach to improve care of patients with advanced cancer. Patients who received supportive oncology (SO) care had significantly fewer inpatient admissions, emergency department visits, and lower total medical costs compared to three comparison cohorts of cancer patients who did not receive SO care. Background: Breast cancer is the most common malignancy among women. Women with breast cancer need to adapt all aspects of their life following their diagnosis. Aim: To investigate how women with breast cancer make adaptations in their lives to cope with the condition. Methods: A directed content analysis was used for this study and 23 participants were interviewed. The participants included women undergoing a mastectomy and their husbands, oncologists, oncology ward nurses and psychologists. Questions were asked regarding the participants' experiences of their adaptation to a mastectomy and cancer. Results: Data analysis led to the emergence of four dimensions; the physical dimension, self-concept, role-playing and interdependence. These four dimensions consisted of 21 main categories, 59 subcategories and 111 codes. Conclusion: The present study showed that despite the emergence of different coping approaches, women undergoing mastectomy have had various physical and mental problems that lead to role disruption. Objectives: Albumin is commonly used for various indications; however, there is conflicting data regarding its appropriate use in different clinical cases. This study aimed to determine the pattern and appropriateness of albumin use among cancer patients at the King Hussein Cancer Center in Jordan. Methods: A retrospective analysis was conducted on adult cancer patients who were prescribed albumin between January 2019 and July 2020 in both outpatient and inpatient settings. Data collected included demographics, prescribing services, indications and dosing regimens. A literature review was performed using PubMed to assess the appropriateness of albumin indications and dosing regimens against current guidelines, drug information resources and the package insert. Results: Albumin was prescribed to 1,361 patients during the study period. Each patient received an average of 74.4 ± 89 g of albumin for an average of 2.6 ± 1.8 days. Albumin use was deemed appropriate in 69% of the patients. The critical care service accounted for the highest albumin consumption, with 37% of prescriptions for septic shock. Inappropriate use of albumin was most prevalent in the medical solid tumour services (40.8% of prescriptions), primarily for edema (28%). Conclusion: To the best of the author's knowledge, this study is the first to evaluate albumin use in a large cohort of oncology patients. Approximately one-third of the albumin prescriptions were considered inappropriate. Continuous education on appropriate usage and regular evaluations of guideline adherence are essential to ensure proper utilisation of albumin in cancer care. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background Neuro-oncology patients and caregivers should have equitable access to rehabilitation, supportive-, and palliative care. To investigate existing issues and potential solutions, we surveyed neuro-oncology professionals to explore current barriers and facilitators to screening patients' needs and referral to services. Methods Members of the European Association of Neuro-Oncology and the European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Brain Tumor Group (EORTC-BTG) were invited to complete a 39-item online questionnaire covering the availability of services, screening, and referral practice. Responses were analyzed descriptively; associations between sociodemographic/clinical variables and screening/referral practice were explored. Results In total, 103 participants completed the survey (67% women and 57% medical doctors). Fifteen professions from 23 countries were represented. Various rehabilitation, supportive-, and palliative care services were available yet rated "inadequate" by 21–37% of participants. Most respondents with a clinical role (n  = 94) declare to screen (78%) and to refer (83%) their patients routinely for physical/cognitive/emotional issues. Survey completers (n  = 103) indicated the main reasons for not screening/referring were (1) lack of suitable referral options (50%); (2) shortage of healthcare professionals (48%); and (3) long waiting lists (42%). To improve service provision, respondents suggested there is a need for education about neuro-oncology-specific issues (75%), improving the availability of services (65%) and staff (64%), developing international guidelines (64%), and strengthening the existing evidence-base for rehabilitation (60%). Conclusions Detecting and managing neuro-oncology patients' and caregivers' rehabilitation, supportive,- and palliative care needs can be improved.
