8. Investigation of friction and wear behavior of hydroxyl-functionalized graphene nanoplatelets filled elastomer nanocomposites.

Abstract

The use of unfilled pure elastomer parts is limited in friction wheels, roller tires, sealing elements, and dynamic friction air suspension applications requiring high wear resistance. This study investigates the mechanical and tribological properties of new nanocomposites obtained by adding hydroxyl-functionalized graphene nanoplatelets at 1, 4, and 8 phr (parts per hundred rubber) ratios to the carbon black filled main rubber compound of sealing elements designed for axle hubs. The synergistic effect of nanofiller materials on the wear behavior of nanocomposites was tested with a block-on-ring wear tester under dry sliding conditions at 1000 rpm and 15 N normal load conditions. The worn surfaces were examined with scanning electron microscopy and circularly polarized light–differential interference contrast topology microscopy to reveal the wear mechanism. The addition of functionalized graphene nanoplatelets to the nanocomposite compound caused significant changes in tensile strength and elongation values by changing the cross-link density. The wear rate of nanocomposites prepared with graphene nanoplatelets at 1, 4, and 8 phr ratios was 11.15%, 25.24%, and 36.54% lower than the main rubber mixture used, respectively. While the hysteresis loss decreased by 14.83% at 1 phr, this value increased in other filler ratios. Significant differences in temperature change occurred as the amount of filler increased. After the test, the temperature values of nanocomposites with 1 and 4 phr filler ratios were between about 85–89°C, while it was measured as 99°C in nanocomposites with 8 phr filler ratios. It has been observed that the homogeneous distribution of two-dimensional carbon allotropes such as graphene nanoplatelet added to the rubber matrix at the optimum rate will improve tribological properties such as better surface lubrication, low wear rate, and low friction coefficient. Abstract

This study investigated the crack propagation behavior of the graphene-reinforced synthetic rubber matrix nanocomposite materials. Graphene-filled rubber conductive nanocomposites developed within the scope of this study were obtained in two stages using mechanical mixers. The relationship between crack propagation and electrical resistance change was investigated using single-edge notched specimens in a tensile tester. Digital image correlation (DIC) technique was used to observe the crack resistance function depending on the local strain distribution. The results from the tests were evaluated to define the relationship between the crack length, the amount of conductive filler, and the change in electrical resistance. The sharp edges of the graphene nanoplatelets negatively affected the fracture resistance of the samples. In addition, it was observed that even at low strain values, gaps were formed in the areas close to the crack tip. The three-dimensional transmission network formed by graphene nanoplatelets dispersed in the matrix improved the electrical conductivity properties of the nanocomposites, so the relationship between crack propagation and electrical resistance change was determined. Abstract

Metal Matrix Composites (MMCs) are now attracting enormous interest, because of their superiority in strength, stiffness, wear resistance, elevated temperature strength or other engineering properties. Parallel to commercialisation, there are research centres throughout the world that are actively researching further development and exploitation of net or near net shape fabrication process. In this book, the production and characterisation of SiC particles reinforced Al alloy matrix composites produced by squeeze casting are investigated. The effects of volume fraction of SiC on microstructure, mechanical properties are examined as well. Also the results of the production of gravity cast matrix alloy, to determine the effect of pressure on microstructure and properties are described in this book.

Keeping the air clean is one of the most important aims in environmental protection. The fugitive emissions especially volatile organic compounds (VOC's) and the ozone-precursors nitrogen oxides (NOX) have a great impact on the quality of the atmospheric air. Fugitive emissions from leaking valves, pumps and flanges are one of the main problems in industrial applications. Elimination or reduction of fugitive emissions could potentially save the industry millions of dollars and prolong scarce resources. This book discusses fugitive emissions, their sources and their impact on the environment.

Conta, Sızdırmazlık Malzemesi, Üretim, Karakterizasyon Sızdırmazlık elemam (Seal) temel olarak bir boşluğu kapatan veya gaz veya sıvı akışkan yalıtımı yapmak amacıyla kullanılan parça olarak tanımlanabilir. Sızdırmazlık, statik sızdırmazlık elemanları veya contalarda birbirine göre relatif olarak hareket etmeyen yüzeyler arasında; dinamik sızdırmazlık elemanlarında ise birbirine göre relatif olarak hareket eden yüzeyler arasında meydana gelir. Statik sızdırmazlık elemanları, otomotivden hava ve uzay sanayiine, sıhhi tesisattan petrokimya endüstrisine kadar her türlü makine ve iletim sisteminin en önemli parçalanndandırlar. Bu kadar yaygm kullanım alanına sahip olan sızdırmazlık elemanlarının malzemeleri ülkemizde genellikle ithal olarak temin edilmektedir. Bu çalışmada kompozit sızdırmazlık malzemeleri üretimi için pilot bir tesis tasarlanarak imalata alınmıştır. Bu amaçla öncelikle kompozit sızdırmazlık malzeme üretiminin ilk aşaması olan taşıyıcı sacın perfore edilmesi için kalıp sistemi tasarlanarak üretilmiş, daha sonra da değişik kaplama malzemelerinin perfore saca bağlanmasını sağlamak amacıyla bir hadde sistemi hazırlanmıştır. Değişik kaplama malzemeleri ve iki farklı perfore yüksekliğine sahip taşıyıcı sac kullanılarak kompozit malzeme üretimi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Sistemin performansını etkileyen parametreler belirlenerek bunlar üzerindeki değişikliklerin sızdırmazlık ve mekanik özelliklere etkileri ASTM, DİN, BS, FIAT ve IVECO standartları ve uluslararası literatüre göre karakterize ve mukayese edilmiştir. Ayrıca hadde yöntemine ilave olarak hidrolik pres kullamlarak bir grup malzeme üretilmiş ve bu iki yöntemin de karşılaştırılması yapılmıştır. PRODUCTION AND CHARACTERISATION OF COMPOSITE STATICAL SEALING MATERIALS SUMMARY Keywords: Gasket, Sealing Materials, Production, Characterisation Static sealing elements are main part of each kind of machines and transport systems used in automotive and aerospace industry, piping systems and petrochemical industry. Materials of sealing elements used in widespread are generally imported to our country. Some domestic manufacturers produce sealing elements form asbestos, accepted as cancerogen in all over the world, by means of old manufacturing techniques. Manufacturing of composite sealing materials, which are harmonious to all environmental conditions at high temperature and stress and unpollute to environment, have become essential in our country. In this study, pilot plant for manufacturing of composite sealing materials was constructed and various kinds of materials were produced at different manufacturing conditions. For this purpose, mould system in used for perforating of carrier steel was designed and constructed, as a first stage of materials manufacturing. Then calendering system was fabricated to compose coating sheets to perforated steel. Parameters affecting system performances were determined and effects of variations on these parameters on sealing performance and mechanical properties are characterised according to tests given by ASTM, DIN, BS, FIAT and IVECO norms. Also, one group of materials were produced by means of hydraulic press for the purpose of comparison with calendering method. It was seen that calendering method more effective and advantageous than press method. Size and geometry of perforation affected largely on bonding of coating materials to carrier steel and mechanical properties. It was appeared that the applied deformation to materials is main parameter effecting the final properties of composite material according to initial properties of the coating materials. In order to achieve optimum sealing performance and mechanical properties, optimum deformation has to be applied to materials. Lower deformation causes insufficient interface bonding and higher deformation causes lower sealing performance. XVII

Abstract

Günümüzde akımsız nikel bor kaplamalar yüksek aşınma ve korozyon dirençleri nedeniyle büyük öneme sahip kaplamalardır. Akımsız Nikel Bor kaplamalar özellikle çevreye zararlı ve kanserojen etkilere sahip sert krom kaplamalara alternatif bir kaplamaya ihtiyaç duyulduğu durumlarda ön plana çıkmaktadır. Gerek yüksek sertlikleri gerekse aşınma ve korozyon dirençleri nedeniyle nikel bor kaplamaların gelecekte tamamen krom kaplamaların yerini alması beklenmektedir. Isıl işlem sonrası oluşan intermetalik fazlar nedeniyle artan sertliği akımsız nikel bor kaplamaları sertlik aranılan durumlarda öne çıkarmaktadır. Bu çalışmada alüminyum altlık üzerine asidik nikel bor kaplama banyosu ile akımsız nikel bor kaplamalar yapılmıştır. Kullanılan nikel kaynağı miktarının, indirgeyici oranının ve sıcaklığın yüzey morfolojisi üzerindeki etkileri incelenerek SEM ve XRD analiz çalışmaları yapılmıştır. Kaplama sonrasında ısıl işlem yapılarak oluşan intermetalik fazların sertlik üzerindeki etkileri incelenmiştir. Nowadays, electroless nickel boron coatings are very important coatings due to their high wear and corrosion resistance. Electroless nickel boron coatings are stand out when needed an alternative coating for hard chrome plating which are harmful for environment have carcinogenic effects. Due to its both high hardness and wear and corrosion resistance, nickel boron coatings are expected to replace chromium coatings in the future. Due to the increased hardness of the intermetallic phases after the heat treatment, nickel boron coatings are stands out in the cases where the hardness is desired. In this study electroless nickel boron coatings were applied to the aluminum substrate with acidic nickel boron coating bath by examining the amount of the nickel source, reductant rate and temperature effects on the surface morphology XRD and SEM analysis are carried out by heat treatment after plating the effects of the intermetallic phases on hardness are investigated. 58

Abstract

In this study, the effects of volume fraction of SiC on microstructure, hardness and tensile properties as well as density have been investigated in Al-4.5Cu-3Mg matrix alloy and its 5, 10, and 15 vol.% SiC particle reinforced composites. The results showed that squeeze casting,,, porosity and other casting defects such as shrinkage cavities were minimised due to pressure application resulted in refining microstructure during solidification. Hardness and tensile properties of matrix alloy were increased by squeeze casting. In composites, hardness increased with increasing volume fraction of SiC. Increasing volume fraction of particles caused to increase porosity and to decrease the elongation and reduction in area. Fracture surface analysis showed that, the failure in composites occurs in both the matrix and particles simultaneously. Furthermore, this indicated that there is a good bonding between matrix and SiC particles and the fracture initiation did not occur at matrix particle interface. (C) 2006 Elsevier B.V.
