Search

The systematic analysis of the correlations between diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) is extended to weak DIBs through the comprehensive catalogue of the Apache Peak Observatory (APO) of 559 DIBs in 25 lines of sight with diverse interstellar properties. The main results are the following: 1) An extension of the number of DIBs identified to be related to C2, that is, those that need very shielded interstellar regions for their carriers to survive UV photo-dissociation. Based on the correlations with the reference C2 and zeta DIBs, anticorrelations with UV-favoured (sigma) DIBs, and the strength ratios in shielded and unshielded sight lines, we propose 12 new C2 candidates and 34 possible "C2-related" DIBs (mostly at lambda < 5950 A ) in addition to the ~20 known confirmed C2 DIBs. With these additions, the census of C2 DIBs might approach completion. 2) We discovered that the intensities of a large set of poorly studied DIBs are strongly enhanced in one or two of the sight lines of HD 175156 and HD 148579. This tentative class, denoted "chi" for the time being, might include up to 50-100 members, half at lambda > 6000 A , and a number of C2 DIBs. These possible enhancements might reflect specific formation processes of their carriers that are yet to be identified in the interstellar medium of these two sight lines. The possible matches of the wavelength of five very broad DIBs, including three "chi" DIBs, with the strong bands that were recently measured by action spectroscopy might favour some long carbon chains and rings as carriers of some DIBs. These correlations and findings justify further theoretical and laboratory efforts for improving our understanding of the complex physics, spectroscopy, and chemistry of the various carbon chains and rings, and their possible formation and destruction in the diffuse interstellar medium., Comment: Accepted in Astronomy and Astrophysics

We report on deep SCUBA-2 observations at 850$\mu$m and NOEMA spectroscopic measurements at 2 mm of the environment surrounding the luminous, massive ($M_{*} \approx 2 \times 10^{11}$ M$_{\odot}$) Herschel-selected source HerBS-70. This source was revealed by previous NOEMA observations to be a binary system of dusty star-forming galaxies at $z= 2.3$, with the East component (HerBS-70E) hosting an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). The SCUBA-2 observations detected, in addition to the binary system, twenty-one sources at $> 3.5 \sigma$ over an area of $\sim 25$ square comoving Mpc with a sensitivity of $\sigma_{850} = 0.75$ mJy. The surface density of continuum sources around HerBS-70 is three times higher than for field galaxies. The NOEMA spectroscopic measurements confirm the protocluster membership of three of the nine brightest sources through their CO(4 - 3) line emission, yielding a volume density 36 times higher than for field galaxies. All five confirmed sub-mm galaxies in the HerBS-70 system have relatively short gas depletion times ($80 - 500$ Myr), indicating the onset of quenching for this protocluster core due to the depletion of gas. The dark matter halo mass of the HerBS-70 system is estimated around $5 \times{} 10^{13}$ M$_{\odot}$, with a projected current-day mass of $10^{15}$ M$_{\odot}$, similar to the local Virgo and Coma clusters. Mid-infrared emission features probe the properties of ionized gas, and hot or warm molecular gas. The Orion Bar is a frequently studied photodissociation region (PDR) containing large amounts of gas under these conditions, and was observed with the MIRI IFU aboard JWST as part of the "PDRs4All" program. The resulting IR spectroscopic images of high angular resolution (0.2") reveal a rich observational inventory of mid-IR emission lines, and spatially resolve the substructure of the PDR, with a mosaic cutting perpendicularly across the ionization front and three dissociation fronts. We extracted five spectra that represent the ionized, atomic, and molecular gas layers, and measured the most prominent gas emission lines. An initial analysis summarizes the physical conditions of the gas and the potential of these data. We identified around 100 lines, report an additional 18 lines that remain unidentified, and measured the line intensities and central wavelengths. The H I recombination lines originating from the ionized gas layer bordering the PDR, have intensity ratios that are well matched by emissivity coefficients from H recombination theory, but deviate up to 10% due contamination by He I lines. We report the observed emission lines of various ionization stages of Ne, P, S, Cl, Ar, Fe, and Ni, and show how certain line ratios vary between the five regions. We observe the pure-rotational H$_2$ lines in the vibrational ground state from 0-0 S(1) to 0-0 S(8), and in the first vibrationally excited state from 1-1 S(5) to 1-1 S(9). We derive H$_2$ excitation diagrams, and approximate the excitation with one thermal (~700 K) component representative of an average gas temperature, and one non-thermal component (~2700 K) probing the effect of UV pumping. Some high-z active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are found to reside in extreme star-forming galaxies, such as hyper-luminous infrared galaxies (HyLIRGs), with AGN-removed $L_{\rm{IR}}$ of $>10^{13} L_{\rm{\odot}}$. In this paper, we report NOEMA observations of six apparent starburst HyLIRGs associated with optical quasars at $z\sim2-3$ in the Stripe 82 field, to study their dust and molecular CO properties. Five out of the six candidates are detected with CO(4-3) or CO(5-4) emission, and four in 2mm dust continuum. Based on the linewidth-$L'_{\rm{CO(1-0)}}$ diagnostics, we find that four galaxies are likely unlensed or weakly lensed sources. The molecular gas mass is in the range of $\mu M_{\rm{H_2}} \sim0.8-9.7\times10^{10} M_{\odot}$ (with $\alpha = 0.8 M_{\odot} (\rm{K km s^{-1} pc^2})^{-1}$ and $\mu$ is the unknown possible gravitational magnification factor). We fit their SEDs, after including the observed 2mm fluxes and upper limits, and estimate their apparent (uncorrected for possible lensing effect) star formation rates ($\mu$SFRs) to be $\sim400-2500$ $M_{\rm{\odot}} \rm{yr^{-1}}$ with depletion time of $\sim20-110$ Myr. We notice interesting offsets, of $\sim10-40$ kpc spatially or $\sim1000-2000$ km s$^{-1}$ spectroscopically, between the optical quasar and the mm continuum or CO emissions. The observed velocity shift is likely related to the blueshifted broad-emission-line region of quasars, though mergers or recoiling black holes are also possible causes, which can explain the spatial offset and the high intrinsic SFRs in the HyLIRG-quasar systems., Comment: 22 pages, 6 figures, 7 tables. We present observations using the NOrthern Extended Millimetre Array (NOEMA) of CO and $\rm H_{2}O$ emission lines, and the underlying dust continuum in two quasars at $z \sim 6$, i.e., P215-16 at $z$ = 5.78 and J1429+5447 at $z$ = 6.18. Notably, among all published CO SLEDs of quasars at $z \sim 6$, the two systems reveal the highest and the lowest CO level of excitation, respectively. Our radiative transfer modeling of the CO SLED of P215-16 suggests that the molecular gas heated by AGN could be a plausible origin for the high CO excitation. For J1429+5447, we obtain the first well-sampled CO SLED (from transitions from 2-1 to 10-9) of a radio-loud quasar at $z\gtrsim 6$. Analysis of the CO SLED suggests that a single photo-dissociation region (PDR) component could explain the CO excitation in the radio-loud quasar J1429+5447. This work highlights the utility of the CO SLED in uncovering the ISM properties in these young quasar-starburst systems at the highest redshift. The JWST has captured the most detailed and sharpest infrared images ever taken of the inner region of the Orion Nebula, the nearest massive star formation region, and a prototypical highly irradiated dense photo-dissociation region (PDR). We investigate the fundamental interaction of far-ultraviolet photons with molecular clouds. The transitions across the ionization front (IF), dissociation front (DF), and the molecular cloud are studied at high-angular resolution. These transitions are relevant to understanding the effects of radiative feedback from massive stars and the dominant physical and chemical processes that lead to the IR emission that JWST will detect in many Galactic and extragalactic environments. Due to the proximity of the Orion Nebula and the unprecedented angular resolution of JWST, these data reveal that the molecular cloud borders are hyper structured at small angular scales of 0.1-1" (0.0002-0.002 pc or 40-400 au at 414 pc). A diverse set of features are observed such as ridges, waves, globules and photoevaporated protoplanetary disks. At the PDR atomic to molecular transition, several bright features are detected that are associated with the highly irradiated surroundings of the dense molecular condensations and embedded young star. Toward the Orion Bar PDR, a highly sculpted interface is detected with sharp edges and density increases near the IF and DF. This was predicted by previous modeling studies, but the fronts were unresolved in most tracers. A complex, structured, and folded DF surface was traced by the H2 lines. This dataset was used to revisit the commonly adopted 2D PDR structure of the Orion Bar. JWST provides us with a complete view of the PDR, all the way from the PDR edge to the substructured dense region, and this allowed us to determine, in detail, where the emission of the atomic and molecular lines, aromatic bands, and dust originate.

(Abridged) Mid-infrared observations of photodissociation regions (PDRs) are dominated by strong emission features called aromatic infrared bands (AIBs). The most prominent AIBs are found at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, and 11.2 $\mu$m. The most sensitive, highest-resolution infrared spectral imaging data ever taken of the prototypical PDR, the Orion Bar, have been captured by JWST. We provide an inventory of the AIBs found in the Orion Bar, along with mid-IR template spectra from five distinct regions in the Bar: the molecular PDR, the atomic PDR, and the HII region. We use JWST NIRSpec IFU and MIRI MRS observations of the Orion Bar from the JWST Early Release Science Program, PDRs4All (ID: 1288). We extract five template spectra to represent the morphology and environment of the Orion Bar PDR. The superb sensitivity and the spectral and spatial resolution of these JWST observations reveal many details of the AIB emission and enable an improved characterization of their detailed profile shapes and sub-components. While the spectra are dominated by the well-known AIBs at 3.3, 6.2, 7.7, 8.6, 11.2, and 12.7 $\mu$m, a wealth of weaker features and sub-components are present. We report trends in the widths and relative strengths of AIBs across the five template spectra. These trends yield valuable insight into the photochemical evolution of PAHs, such as the evolution responsible for the shift of 11.2 $\mu$m AIB emission from class B$_{11.2}$ in the molecular PDR to class A$_{11.2}$ in the PDR surface layers. This photochemical evolution is driven by the increased importance of FUV processing in the PDR surface layers, resulting in a "weeding out" of the weakest links of the PAH family in these layers. Understanding the nature of high-$z$ dusty galaxies requires a comprehensive view of their ISM and molecular complexity. However, the molecular ISM at high-$z$ is commonly studied using only a few species beyond CO, limiting our understanding. In this paper, we present the results of deep 3 mm spectral line surveys using the NOEMA targeting two lensed dusty galaxies: APM 08279+5255 (APM), a quasar at redshift $z=3.911$, and NCv1.143 (NC), a $z=3.565$ starburst galaxy. The spectral line surveys cover rest-frame frequencies from about 330-550 GHz. We report the detection of 38 and 25 emission lines in APM and NC, respectively. The spectra reveal the chemical richness and the complexity of the physical properties of the ISM. By comparing the spectra of the two sources and combining the gas excitation analysis, we find that the physical properties and the chemical imprints of the ISM are different between them: the molecular gas is more excited in APM, exhibiting higher molecular-gas temperatures and densities compared to NC; the chemical abundances in APM are akin to the values of local AGN, showing boosted relative abundances of the dense gas tracers that might be related to high-temperature chemistry and/or XDRs, while NC more closely resembles local starburst galaxies. The most significant differences are found in H2O, where the 448GHz H2O line is significantly brighter in APM, likely linked to the intense far-infrared radiation from the dust powered by AGN. Our astrochemical model suggests that at such high column densities, FUV radiation is less important in regulating the ISM, while CRs (X-rays/shocks) are the key players in shaping the abundance of the molecules and the initial conditions of star formation. Such deep spectral line surveys open a new window to study the physical and chemical properties of the ISM and the radiation field of galaxies in the early Universe. The z-GAL survey observed 137 bright Herschel-selected targets with the IRAM NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array, with the aim to measure their redshift and study their properties. Several of them have been resolved into multiple sources. Consequently, robust spectroscopic redshifts have been measured for 165 individual galaxies in the range 0.8

(Abridged) We present the dust properties of 125 bright Herschel galaxies selected from the z-GAL survey. The large instantaneous bandwidth of NOEMA provides an exquisite sampling of the underlying dust continuum emission at 2 and 3 mm in the observed frame, with flux densities in at least four side bands for each source. Together with the available Herschel 250, 350, and 500 micron and SCUBA-2 850 micron flux densities, the spectral energy distribution of each source can be analyzed from the far-infrared to the millimeter, with a fine sampling of the Rayleigh-Jeans tail. This wealth of data provides a solid basis to derive robust dust properties, in particular the dust emissivity index, beta, and the dust temperature, T(dust). In order to demonstrate our ability to constrain the dust properties, we used a flux-generated mock catalog and analyzed the results under the assumption of an optically thin and optically thick modified black body emission. For the z-GAL sources, we report a range of dust emissivities with beta ~ 1.5 - 3 estimated up to high precision with relative uncertainties that vary in the range 7% - 15%, and an average of 2.2 +/- 0.3. We find dust temperatures varying from 20 to 50 K with an average of T(dust) ~ 30 K for the optically thin case and ~38 K in the optically thick case. For all the sources, we estimate the dust masses and apparent infrared luminosities (based on the optically thin approach). An inverse correlation is found between T(dust) and beta, which is similar to what is seen in the local Universe. Finally, we report an increasing trend in the dust temperature as a function of redshift at a rate of 6.5 +/- 0.5 K/z for this 500 micron-selected sample. (Abridged) Using the IRAM NOEMA interferometer, we measures the redshifts of 126 bright galaxies detected in the Herschel H-ATLAS, HeLMS, and HerS surveys. We report reliable spectroscopic redshifts for a total of 124 of the Herschel-selected galaxies. The redshifts are estimated from scans of the 3 and 2-mm bands (and, in one case, the 1-mm band) and are based on the detection of at least two emission lines. Together with the Pilot Programme (Neri et al. 2020), including spectroscopic redshifts of 11 sources, our survey has derived precise redshifts for 135 bright Herschel-selected galaxies, making it the largest sample of high-z galaxies with robust redshifts to date. Most emission lines detected are from 12CO (mainly from J=2-1 to 5-4), with some sources seen in [CI] and H2O emission lines. The spectroscopic redshifts are in the range 0.8

OH+ absorption is a powerful tracer of inflowing and outflowing gas in the predominantly atomic diffuse and turbulent halo surrounding galaxies. In this letter, we present observations of OH+(1_1-1_0), CO(9-8) and the underlying dust continuum in 5 strongly lensed z~2-4 QSOs, using ALMA to detect outflowing neutral gas. Blue-shifted OH+ absorption is detected in 3/5 QSOs and tentatively detected in a 4th. Absorption at systemic velocities is also detected in one. OH+ emission is observed in 3/5 QSOs at systemic velocities and CO(9-8) is detected in all 5 QSOs at high S/N, providing information on the dense molecular gas within the host galaxy. We compare our sample to high-z far-infrared (FIR) luminous star-forming and active galaxies from the literature. We find no difference in OH+ absorption line properties between active and star-forming galaxies with both samples following the same optical depth-dust temperature relation, suggesting that these observables are driven by the same mechanism in both samples. Similarly, star-forming and active galaxies both follow the same OH+ emission-FIR relation. Obscured QSOs display broader (>800 km/s) emission than the unobscured QSOs and all but one of the high-z star-forming galaxies, likely caused by the warm molecular gas reservoir obscuring the accreting nucleus. Broader CO(9-8) emission (>500 km/s) is found in obscured versus unobscured QSOs, but overall cover a similar range in line widths as the star-forming galaxies and follow the CO(9-8)-FIR luminosity relation found in low-z galaxies. We find that outflows traced by OH+ are only detected in extreme star-forming galaxies (broad CO emission) and in both types of QSOs, which, in turn, display no red-shifted absorption. This suggests that diffuse neutral outflows in galaxy halos may be associated with the most energetic evolutionary phases leading up to and following the obscured QSO phase., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables, accepted to A&A letters

The formation of the first supermassive black holes is expected to have occurred in some most pronounced matter and galaxy overdensities in the early universe. We have conducted a sub-mm wavelength continuum survey of 54 $z\sim6$ quasars using the Submillimeter Common-User Bolometre Array-2 (SCUBA2) on the James Clerk Maxwell Telescope (JCMT) to study the environments around $z \sim 6$ quasars. We identified 170 submillimeter galaxies (SMGs) with above 3.5$\sigma$ detections at 450 or 850 \um\, maps. Their FIR luminosities are 2.2 - 6.4 $\times$ 10$^{12} L_{\odot}$, and star formation rates are $\sim$ 400 - 1200 M$_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$. We also calculated the SMGs differential and cumulative number counts in a combined area of $\sim$ 620 arcmin$^2$. To a $4\sigma$ detection (at $\sim$ 5.5 mJy), SMGs overdensity is $0.68^{+0.21}_{-0.19}$($\pm0.19$), exceeding the blank field source counts by a factor of 1.68. We find that 13/54 quasars show overdensities (at $\sim$ 5.5 mJy) of $\delta_{SMG}\sim$ 1.5 - 5.4. The combined area of these 13 quasars exceeds the blank field counts with the overdensity to 5.5 mJy of \dsmg $\sim$ $2.46^{+0.64}_{-0.55}$($\pm0.25$) in the regions of $\sim$ 150 arcmin$^2$. However, the excess is insignificant on the bright end (e.g., 7.5 mJy). We also compare results with previous environmental studies of Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) and Lyman-Break Galaxies (LBGs) on a similar scale. Our survey presents the first systematic study of the environment of quasars at $z\sim6$. The newly discovered SMGs provide essential candidates for follow-up spectroscopic observations to test whether they reside in the same large-scale structures as the quasars and search for protoclusters at an early epoch., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures and 2 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We analyse the molecular and atomic emission lines of 71 bright Herschel-selected galaxies between redshifts 1.4 to 4.6 detected by the Atacama Large Millimetre/submillimetre Array. These lines include a total of 156 CO, [C I], and H2O emission lines. For 46 galaxies, we detect two transitions of CO lines, and for these galaxies we find gas properties similar to those of other dusty star-forming galaxy (DSFG) samples. A comparison to photo-dissociation models suggests that most of Herschel-selected galaxies have similar interstellar medium conditions as local infrared-luminous galaxies and high-redshift DSFGs, although with denser gas and more intense far-ultraviolet radiation fields than normal star-forming galaxies. The line luminosities agree with the luminosity scaling relations across five orders of magnitude, although the star-formation and gas surface density distributions (i.e., Schmidt-Kennicutt relation) suggest a different star-formation phase in our galaxies (and other DSFGs) compared to local and low-redshift gas-rich, normal star-forming systems. The gas-to-dust ratios of these galaxies are similar to Milky Way values, with no apparent redshift evolution. Four of 46 sources appear to have CO line ratios in excess of the expected maximum (thermalized) profile, suggesting a rare phase in the evolution of DSFGs. Finally, we create a deep stacked spectrum over a wide rest-frame frequency (220-890 GHz) that reveals faint transitions from HCN and CH, in line with previous stacking experiments., Comment: 30 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society Main Journal. We present the results of a survey of CO(1-0) emission in 14 infrared luminous dusty star forming galaxies (DSFGs) at 2 < z < 4 with the NSF's Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. All sources are detected in CO(1-0), with an ~1arcsec angular resolution. Seven sources show extended and complex structure. We measure CO luminosities of $({\mu})L'_{CO(1-0)}=0.4-2.9x10^{11}$ K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^2$, and molecular gas masses of (${\mu}$)M$_{H2}$ = 1.3 - 8.6 x 10$^{11}$ Mo, where ({\mu}) is the magnification factor. The derived molecular gas depletion times of t$_{\rm dep}$ = 40 - 460 Myr, cover the expected range of both normal star forming galaxies and starbursts. Comparing to the higher-J CO transitions previously observed for the same sources, we find CO temperature brightness ratios of r$_{32/10}$ = 0.4 - 1.4, r$_{43/10}$ = 0.4 - 1.7, and r$_{54/10}$ = 0.3 - 1.3. We find a wide range of CO spectral line energy distributions (SLEDs), in agreement with other high-z DSFGs, with the exception of three sources that are most comparable to the Cloverleaf and APM08279+5255. Based on radiative transfer modelling of the CO SLEDs we determine densities of n$_{H2}$ = 0.3 - 8.5 x 10$^3$ cm$^{-3}$ and temperatures of T$_K$ = 100 - 200 K. Lastly, four sources are detected in the continuum, three have radio emission consistent with their infrared derived star formation rates, while HerBS-70E requires an additional synchrotron radiation component from an active galactic nucleus. Overall, we find that even though the sample is similarly luminous in the infrared, by tracing the CO(1-0) emission a diversity of galaxy and excitation properties are revealed, demonstrating the importance of CO(1-0) observations in combination to higher-J transitions., Comment: 25pages , 13 figures, Accepted for publication at ApJ

We present 101 and 151 GHz ALMA continuum images for 85 fields selected from Herschel observations that have 500 micron flux densities >80 mJy and 250-500 micron colours consistent with z > 2, most of which are expected to be gravitationally lensed or hyperluminous infrared galaxies. Approximately half of the Herschel 500 micron sources were resolved into multiple ALMA sources, but 11 of the 15 brightest 500 micron Herschel sources correspond to individual ALMA sources. For the 37 fields containing either a single source with a spectroscopic redshift or two sources with the same spectroscopic redshift, we examined the colour temperatures and dust emissivity indices. The colour temperatures only vary weakly with redshift and are statistically consistent with no redshift-dependent temperature variations, which generally corresponds to results from other samples selected in far-infrared, submillimetre, or millimetre bands but not to results from samples selected in optical or near-infrared bands. The dust emissivity indices, with very few exceptions, are largely consistent with a value of 2. We also compared spectroscopic redshifts to photometric redshifts based on spectral energy distribution templates designed for infrared-bright high-redshift galaxies. While the templates systematically underestimate the redshifts by ~15%, the inclusion of ALMA data decreases the scatter in the predicted redshifts by a factor of ~2, illustrating the potential usefulness of these millimetre data for estimating photometric redshifts., Comment: Accepted for publication in Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society

We present ALMA sub-kpc- to kpc-scale resolution observations of the [CII], CO(9-8), and OH$^{+}$\,($1_{1}$--$0_{1}$) lines along with their dust continuum emission toward the FIR luminous quasar SDSS J231038.88+185519.7 at $z = 6.0031$. The [CII] brightness follows a flat distribution with a Sersic index of 0.59. The CO(9-8) line and the dust continuum can be fit with an unresolved nuclear component and an extended Sersic component with a Sersic index of ~1. The dust temperature drops with distance from the center. The effective radius of the dust continuum is smaller than that of the line emission and the dust mass surface density, but is consistent with that of the star formation rate surface density. The OH$^{+}$\,($1_{1}$--$0_{1}$) line shows a P-Cygni profile with an absorption, which may indicate an outflow with a neutral gas mass of $(6.2\pm1.2)\times10^{8} M_{\odot}$ along the line of sight. We employed a 3D tilted ring model to fit the [CII] and CO(9-8) data cubes. The two lines are both rotation dominated and trace identical disk geometries and gas motions. We decompose the circular rotation curve measured from the kinematic model fit to the [CII] line into four matter components (black hole, stars, gas, and dark matter). The quasar-starburst system is dominated by baryonic matter inside the central few kiloparsecs. We constrain the black hole mass to be $2.97^{+0.51}_{-0.77}\times 10^{9}\,M_{\odot}$; this is the first time that the dynamical mass of a black hole has been measured at $z\sim6$. A massive stellar component (on the order of $10^{9}\,M_{\odot}$) may have already existed when the Universe was only ~0.93 Gyr old. The relations between the black hole mass and the baryonic mass of this quasar indicate that the central supermassive black hole may have formed before its host galaxy. [Abridged version. High-resolution imaging is crucial for exploring the origin and mechanism of radio emission in quasars, especially at high redshifts. We present 1.5 GHz Very Long Baseline Array (VLBA) images of the radio continuum emission from the radio-intermediate quasar (RIQ) J2242+0334 at $z = 5.9$. This object was previously detected at both 1.5 GHz and 3 GHz with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) as a point source. However, there is no clear detection in the VLBA images at both the full resolution of 10.7 milliarcsecond (mas) $\times$ 4.5 mas (61.7 pc $\times$ 26.0 pc) and a tapered resolution of 26 mas $\times$ 21 mas (150 pc $\times$ 121 pc). This suggests that the radio emission from the quasar is diffuse on mas scales with surface brightness fainter than the $3\sigma$ detection limit of 40.5 $\mu \rm Jy \ beam^{-1}$ in the full resolution image. The radio emission in the RIQ J2242+0334 is likely to be wind-like (i.e., diffuse) rather than in the form of collimated jets. This is different from the previous radio detections of the most luminous quasars at $z \sim$6 which are usually dominated by compact, high brightness temperature radio sources. Meanwhile, compared with RIQs at low redshifts, the case of J2242+0334 suggests that not all RIQs are beamed radio-quiet quasars. We present spectroscopic measurements for 71 galaxies associated with 62 of the brightest high-redshift submillimeter sources from the Southern fields of the Herschel Astrophysical Terahertz Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS), while targeting 85 sources which resolved into 142. We have obtained robust redshift measurements for all sources using the 12-m Array and an efficient tuning of ALMA to optimise its use as a redshift hunter, with 73 per cent of the sources having a robust redshift identification. Nine of these redshift identifications also rely on observations from the Atacama Compact Array. The spectroscopic redshifts span a range $1.41

Massive stars disrupt their natal molecular cloud material through radiative and mechanical feedback processes. These processes have profound effects on the evolution of interstellar matter in our Galaxy and throughout the Universe, from the era of vigorous star formation at redshifts of 1-3 to the present day. The dominant feedback processes can be probed by observations of the Photo-Dissociation Regions (PDRs) where the far-ultraviolet photons of massive stars create warm regions of gas and dust in the neutral atomic and molecular gas. PDR emission provides a unique tool to study in detail the physical and chemical processes that are relevant for most of the mass in inter- and circumstellar media including diffuse clouds, proto-planetary disks and molecular cloud surfaces, globules, planetary nebulae, and star-forming regions. PDR emission dominates the infrared (IR) spectra of star-forming galaxies. Most of the Galactic and extragalactic observations obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will therefore arise in PDR emission. In this paper we present an Early Release Science program using the MIRI, NIRSpec, and NIRCam instruments dedicated to the observations of an emblematic and nearby PDR: the Orion Bar. These early JWST observations will provide template datasets designed to identify key PDR characteristics in JWST observations. These data will serve to benchmark PDR models and extend them into the JWST era. We also present the Science-Enabling products that we will provide to the community. These template datasets and Science-Enabling products will guide the preparation of future proposals on star-forming regions in our Galaxy and beyond and will facilitate data analysis and interpretation of forthcoming JWST observations., Comment: Submitted to PASP

As the possible progenitors of passive galaxies at z=2-3, dusty star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at z>4 provide a unique perspective to study the formation, assembly, and early quenching of massive galaxies in the early Universe. The extreme obscuration in optical-IR makes (sub)mm spectral scans the most universal and unbiased way to confirm/exclude the high-z nature of candidate dusty star-forming galaxies. We present here the status of the NIKA2 Cosmological Legacy Survey (N2CLS), which is the deepest wide-area single-dish survey in the millimeter searching for high-z DSFGs. The high interstellar abundances of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and their size distribution are the result of complex chemical processes implying dust, UV radiation, and the main gaseous components (H, C+, and O). These processes must explain the high abundance of relatively small PAHs in the diffuse interstellar medium (ISM) and imply the continuous formation of some PAHs that are small enough (number of carbon atoms NC <~ 35-50) to be completely dehydrogenated by interstellar UV radiation. The carbon clusters Cn thus formed are constantly exposed to the absorption of ~10-13.6 eV UV photons, allowing isomerization and favoring the formation of the most stable isomers. They might tend to form irregular carbon cages. The frequent accretion of interstellar C+ ions could favor further cage isomerization, as is known in the laboratory for C60, possibly yielding most stable fullerenes, such as C40, C44, and C50. These fullerenes are expected to be very stable in the diffuse ISM because C2 ejection is not possible by single UV photon absorption, but could need rare two-photon absorption. It is possible that at least one of these fullerenes or its cation is as abundant as C60 or C60+ in the diffuse ISM, although this abundance is limited by the lack of observed matching features in observed mid-infrared spectra. B3LYP calculations of the visible spectrum for a number of fullerene isomers with 40 <~ NC <~ 50 show that they generally have a few spectral bands in the visible range, with f-values in the range of a few 10-2. This could make such fullerenes interesting candidates for the carriers of some diffuse interstellar bands.

We present LMT/AzTEC 1.1mm observations of $\sim100$ luminous high-redshift dusty star-forming galaxy candidates from the $\sim600\,$sq.deg $Herschel$-ATLAS survey, selected on the basis of their SPIRE red far-infrared colours and with $S_{500\mu\rm m}=35-80$ mJy. With an effective $\theta_{\rm FWHM}\approx9.5\,$ arcsec angular resolution, our observations reveal that at least 9 per cent of the targets break into multiple systems with SNR $\geq 4$ members. The fraction of multiple systems increases to $\sim23\,$ per cent (or more) if some non-detected targets are considered multiples, as suggested by the data. Combining the new AzTEC and deblended $Herschel$ photometry we derive photometric redshifts, IR luminosities, and star formation rates. While the median redshifts of the multiple and single systems are similar $(z_{\rm med}\approx3.6)$, the redshift distribution of the latter is skewed towards higher redshifts. Of the AzTEC sources $\sim85\,$ per cent lie at $z_{\rm phot}>3$ while $\sim33\,$ per cent are at $z_{\rm phot}>4$. Infrared quasi-stellar objects (IR QSOs) are a rare subpopulation selected from ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIRGs) and have been regarded as promising candidates of ULIRG-to-optical QSO transition objects. Here we present NOEMA observations of the CO(1-0) line and 3 mm continuum emission in an IR QSO IRAS F07599+6508 at $z=0.1486$, which has many properties in common with Mrk 231. The CO emission is found to be resolved with a major axis of $\sim$6.1 kpc that is larger than the size of $\sim$4.0 kpc derived for 3 mm continuum. We identify two faint CO features located at a projected distance of $\sim$11.4 and 19.1 kpc from the galaxy nucleus, respectively, both of which are found to have counterparts in the optical and radio bands and may have a merger origin. A systematic velocity gradient is found in the CO main component, suggesting that the bulk of molecular gas is likely rotationally supported. Based on the radio-to-millimeter spectral energy distribution and IR data, we estimate that about 30$\%$ of the flux at 3 mm arises from free-free emission and infer a free-free-derived star formation rate of 77 $M_\odot\ {\rm yr^{-1}}$, close to the IR estimate corrected for the AGN contribution. We find a high-velocity CO emission feature at the velocity range of about -1300 to -2000 km s$^{-1}$. Additional deep CO observations are needed to confirm the presence of a possible very high-velocity CO extension of the OH outflow in this IR QSO., Comment: 20 pages, 13 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ

We present 3-mm observations of the quasar J0015+1842 at z=2.63 with the NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA). Our data reveals molecular gas, traced via a Gaussian CO(3-2) line, with a remarkably large velocity dispersion (FWHM=1010+/-120 km/s) and corresponding to a total molecular mass MH2~(3.4-17)x10^10 Msun, depending on the adopted CO-to-H2 conversion factor alphaCO=(0.8-4.0) Msun (km/s pc^2)^-1. Assuming the 3-mm continuum emission is thermal, we derive a dust mass of the order of Mdust ~5x10^8 Msun. J0015+1842 is located in the molecular gas-rich region in the IR vs CO line luminosity diagram, in-between the main locus of main-sequence and sub-millimetre galaxies and that of most other AGNs targeted so far for CO measurements. While the large velocity dispersion of the CO line suggests a merging system, J0015+1842 is observed to be a regular, only very moderately dust-reddened (Av~0.3-0.4) type-I quasar from its UV-optical spectrum, from which we infer a mass of the super-massive black hole be around MBH~6x10^8 Msun. We suggest that J0015+1842 is observed at a galaxy evolutionary stage where a massive merger has brought significant amounts of gas towards an actively accreting super-massive black hole (quasar). While the host still contains a large amount of dust and molecular gas with high velocity dispersion, the quasar has already cleared the way towards the observer, likely through powerful outflows as recently revealed by optical observations of the same object. High angular resolution observations of this and similar systems} should help determining better the respective importance of evolution and orientation in the appearance of quasars and their host galaxies and have the potential to investigate early feedback and star-formation processes in galaxies in their quasar phases., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures, accepted for publication in A\&A

We carry out a series of deep Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) S-band observations of a sample of 21 quasars at $z\sim6$. The new observations expand the searches of radio continuum emission to the optically faint quasar population at the highest redshift with rest-frame $4400 \rm \AA$ luminosities down to $3 \times10^{11} \ L_{\odot}$. We report the detections of two new radio-loud quasars: CFHQS J2242+0334 (hereafter J2242+0334) at $z=5.88$ and CFHQS J0227$-$0605 (hereafter J0227$-$0605) at $z=6.20$, detected with 3 GHz flux densities of $87.0 \pm 6.3 \ \mu \rm Jy$ and $55.4 \pm 6.7 \ \mu \rm Jy$, respectively. Their radio \replaced{loudness}{loudnesses} are estimated to be $54.9 \pm 4.7$ and $16.5 \pm 3.2$, respectively. To better constrain the radio-loud fraction (RLF), we combine the new measurements with the archival VLA L-band data as well as available data from the literature, considering the upper limits for non-detections and \deleted{and} possible selection effects. The final derived RLF is $9.4 \pm 5.7\%$ for the optically selected quasars at $z\sim6$. We also compare the RLF to that of the quasar samples at low redshift and check the RLF in different quasar luminosity bins. The RLF for the optically faint objects is still poorly constrained due to the limited sample size. Our \replaced{result}{results} show no evidence of significant quasar RLF evolution with redshift. (Abridged) Exploiting the sensitivity and broad band width of NOEMA, we have studied the molecular gas and dust in the galaxy HerBS-89a, at z=2.95. High angular resolution images reveal a partial 1.0" diameter Einstein ring in the dust continuum emission and the molecular emission lines of 12CO(9-8) and H2O(2_02-1_11). We report the detection of the three fundamental transitions of the molecular ion OH+, seen in absorption; the molecular ion CH+(1-0) seen in absorption (and tentatively in emission); two transitions of amidogen (NH2), seen in emission; and HCN(11-10) and/or NH(1_2-0_1) seen in absorption. The NOEMA data are complemented with VLA data tracing the 12CO(1-0) emission line, which provides a measurement of the total mass of molecular gas and an anchor for a CO excitation analysis. In addition, we present HST imaging that reveals the foreground lensing galaxy in the near-infrared. Together with data from the GTC, we derive a photometric redshift of z(phot)~0.9 for the foreground lensing galaxy. Modelling the lensing of HerBS-89a, we reconstruct the dust continuum and molecular emission lines (magnified by a factor ~4-5) in the source plane. The 12CO(9-8) and H2O emission lines have comparable spatial and kinematic distributions; the source-plane reconstructions do not clearly distinguish between a one-component and a two-component scenario, but the latter accounts for the observed broad line widths. HerBS-89a is a powerful star forming galaxy with a dust-to-gas ratio delta(GDR)~80, a SFR = 614 +/- 59 Msun/yr and a depletion timescale tau(depl) = (3.4 +/- 1.0) 1e8 years. The OH+ and CH+ absorption lines, all have their main velocity component red-shifted by \Delta(V)~100 km/s relative to the global CO reservoir. We argue that these absorption lines trace a rare example of gas inflow towards the center of the galaxy., Comment: 33 pages, Accepted for publication on A&A

We present a submillimetre continuum survey ('SCUBA2 High rEdshift bRight quasaR surveY', hereafter SHERRY) of 54 high redshift quasars at $5.63.5\sigma$). The new SHERRY detections indicate far-infrared (FIR) luminosities of $\rm 3.5\times10^{12}$ to $\rm 1.4\times10^{13}$ $L_{\odot}$, implying extreme star formation rates of 90 to 1060 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$ in the quasar host galaxies. Compared with $z =$ 2$-$5 samples, the FIR luminous quasars ($L_{\rm FIR} > 10^{13}\,L_{\odot}$) are more rare at $z \sim 6$. The optical/near-infrared (NIR) spectra of these objects show 11% (6/54) of the sources have weak Ly$\alpha$, emission line features, which may relate to different sub-phases of the central active galactic nuclei (AGNs). Our SCUBA2 survey confirms the trend reported in the literature that quasars with submillimeter detections tend to have weaker ultraviolet (UV) emission lines compared to quasars with nondetections. The connection between weak UV quasar line emission and bright dust continuum emission powered by massive star formation may suggest an early phase of AGN-galaxy evolution, in which the broad line region is starting to develop slowly or is shielded from the central ionization source, and has unusual properties such as weak line features or bright FIR emission., Comment: 28 pages, 10 figures, published in ApJ

Observing the interstellar medium (ISM) in $z \gtrsim 6$ quasars host galaxies is essential for understanding the co-evolution between the supermassive black holes and their hosts. To probe the gas physical conditions and search for imprints of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN) on the ISM, we report ALMA observations of the $\rm [N\ II]_{122 \mu m}$ and $\rm [O\ I]_{146 \mu m}$ lines and the underlying continuum from the $z=6.003$ quasar SDSS J231038.88+185519.7. Together with previous $\rm [C\ II]_{158 \mu m}$ and $\rm [O\ III]_{88 \mu m}$ observations, we use the ratios of these fine-structure lines to probe the ISM properties. Similar to other high-$z$ systems, this object exhibits a $\rm [C\ II]_{158 \mu m}$/$\rm [O\ I]_{146 \mu m}$ ratio comparable to the lowest values found in local (Ultra) luminous infrared galaxies, suggesting a "warmer" and "denser" gas component compared to typical local systems. The $\rm [O\ III]_{88 \mu m}$/$\rm [O\ I]_{146 \mu m}$ ratio is lower than that of other local and high-$z$ systems, indicating a smaller ionized gas fraction in this quasar. The $\rm [O\ III]_{88 \mu m}$/$\rm [N\ II]_{122 \mu m}$ ratio is comparable to that of local systems, and suggests a metallicity of $Z/Z_{\odot}$=1.5$-$2.1. Based on the $\rm [N\ II]_{122 \mu m}$ detection, we estimate that $17\%$ of the $\rm [C\ II]_{158 \mu m}$ emission is associated with ionized gas. The $\rm [N\ II]_{122 \mu m}$ line shows a "flux deficit" comparable to local systems. The $\rm [O\ I]_{146 \mu m}$ line, with a $\rm [O\ I]_{146 \mu m}$/FIR ratio $\ge 2\times$ than expected from the local relation, indicates no $\rm [O\ I]_{\rm 146 \mu m}$ deficit. The low $\rm [C\ II]_{158 \mu m}$/$\rm [O\ I]_{146 \mu m}$ ratio, together with the high $\rm [O\ I]_{146 \mu m}$/FIR ratio in J2310+1855, reveals that the warm and dense gas is likely a result of AGN heating to the ISM., Comment: Accepted for publication in Apj. 15 pages, 4 figures

We present results on a search for 86.243 GHz SiO (J = 2 -- 1, v = 1) maser emission toward 67 OH/IR stars located near the Galactic Centre. We detected 32 spectral peaks, of which 28 correspond to SiO maser lines arising from the envelopes of these OH/IR stars. In OH/IR stars, we obtained an SiO maser detection rate of about 40%. We serendipitously detected two other lines from OH/IR stars at 86.18 GHz, which could be due to a CCS-molecule transition at 86.181 GHz or probably to an highly excited OH molecular transition at 86.178 GHz. The detection rate of 86 GHz maser emission is found to be about 60% for sources with The Midcourse Space Experiment (MSX) A - E < 2.5 mag; but it drops to 25% for the reddest OH/IR stars with MSX A - E > 2.5 mag. This supports the hypothesis by Messineo et al. (2002) that the SiO masers are primarily found in relatively thinner circumstellar material., Comment: 4 figures, 14 pages

(abridged) We present ALMA observations of hydrogen fluoride, HF J=1-0, H20 (220-211), and the 1.2 THz rest-frame continuum emission from the z=4.7 system BR1202-0725. BR1202-0725 is a galaxy group consisting of a QSO, a sub-millimeter galaxy (SMG), and two Ly-alpha emitters. We detected HF in emission in the QSO and possibly in absorption in the SMG, while water is detected in emission in both the QSO and SMG. The QSO is the most luminous HF emitter yet found and has the same ratio of HF emission line to infrared luminosity as a sample of local AGN and the Orion Bar. This consistency covers about 10 orders-of-magnitude in infrared luminosity, L_IR. Based on the conclusions of a study of HF emission in the Orion Bar and modeling, the HF emission in the QSO is either excited by collisions with electrons and H2 in molecular plasmas irradiated by the AGN and intense star formation or predominately by collisions with H2, with a modest contribution from electrons, in a relatively high temperature (~120 K), dense (~10^5 cm^-3) medium. Although HF should be an excellent tracer of molecular outflows, we do not find strong evidence for outflows in HF in either the QSO or the SMG. From a putative absorption feature in HF in the SMG, we estimate an upper limit on the outflow rate, dM/dt_outflow <~45 M_sun/yr. The ratio of the outflow rate to the star formation rate is <5% for the SMG. The broadness of the H2O line in the SMG, FWHM~1020 km/s, may suggest that either the gas on large scales (>4 kpc) is significantly more disturbed and turbulent due either to interactions and mass exchange with the other members of the group or to the dissipation of the energy of the intense star formation or both. The lack of significant molecular outflows in either source may imply that much of the energy from the intense star formation and AGN activity in this pair is being dissipated in their ISM., Comment: A&A accepted and after editing and minor changes, several figures and it is relatively short, only 8 pages

Carriers of diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) still need to be identified. In a recent paper, we reported a correlation between the DIB wavelength and the apparent UV resilience (or boost) of their carriers. We proposed that this might be an indication of the important role of conjugated elongated molecules among the DIB carriers. The aim of this paper is to further understand the origin of this correlation. The analysis of 509 optical DIBs on the lines of sight of HD 183143 and/or HD 204827 reported in the literature shows that this correlation mainly implies the 386 narrow DIBs with a band width < 1.1 A, which include most of the identified DIBs of the C2 and zeta families, while the majority of the 123 broader DIBs, including the identified sigma DIBs, do not display such a correlation. We present a possible origin of this correlation from very strong bands of large conjugated elongated molecules, such as carbon chains, polyacenes, or other catacondensed polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. The total amount of carbon contained in all the carriers of these narrow DIBs is a very small fraction of the interstellar carbon if their oscillator strengths are <~1. The amount of carbon locked in the carriers of the broader DIBs is higher, especially if their oscillator strengths are significantly weaker.

Submillimeter rotational lines of H2O are a powerful probe in warm gas regions of the ISM, tracing scales and structures ranging from kpc disks to the most compact and dust-obscured regions of galactic nuclei. The ortho-H2O(423-330) line at 448 GHz, which was recently detected in a local luminous infrared galaxy (Pereira-Santaella et al. 2017), offers a unique constraint on the excitation conditions and ISM properties in deeply buried galaxy nuclei since the line requires high far-IR optical depths to be excited. In this letter, we report the first high-redshift detection of the 448 GHz H2O(423-330) line using ALMA, in a strongly lensed submillimeter galaxy (SMG) at z=3.63. After correcting for magnification, the luminosity of the 448 GHz H2O line is ~10^6 L_sun. In combination with three other previously detected H2O lines, we build a model that "resolves" the dusty ISM structure of the SMG, and find that it is composed of a ~1 kpc optically thin (optical depth at 100{\mu}m {\tau}_{100}~0.3) disk component with dust temperature T_{dust} \approx 50 K emitting a total infrared power of 5e12 L_sun with surface density \Sigma_{IR}=4e11 L_sun kpc^{-2}, and a very compact (0.1 kpc) heavily dust-obscured ({\tau}_{100} \gtrsim 1) nuclear core with very warm dust (100 K) and \Sigma_{IR}=8e12 L_sun kpc^{-2}. The H2O abundance in the core component, X_{H2O}~(0.3-5)e{-5}, is at least one order of magnitude higher than in the disk component. The optically thick core has the characteristic properties of an Eddington-limited starburst, providing evidence that radiation pressure on dust is capable of supporting the ISM in buried nuclei at high redshifts. The multi-component ISM structure revealed by our models illustrates that dust and molecules such as H2O are present in regions characterized by highly differing conditions and scales, extending from the nucleus to more extended regions of SMGs., Comment: 1 table and 4 figures, A&A Letter accepted

We report Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of CO $(8-7)$, $(9-8)$, $\rm H_{2}O (2_{0,2}-1_{1,1})$ and $\rm OH^{+} (1_{1}-0_{1})$ and NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA) observations of CO $(5-4)$, $(6-5)$, $(12-11)$ and $(13-12)$ towards the $z = 6.003$ quasar SDSS J231038.88+185519.7, aiming to probe the physical conditions of the molecular gas content of this source. We present the best sampled CO spectral line energy distribution (SLED) at $z = 6.003$, and analyzed it with the radiative transfer code MOLPOP-CEP. Fitting the CO SLED to a one-component model indicates a kinetic temperature $T_{\rm kin} = 228 \ \rm K$, molecular gas density $log (n(\rm H_{2})/\rm cm^{-3}$ )=4.75, and CO column density $log(N(\rm CO)/\rm cm^{-2}) =17.5$, although a two-component model better fits the data. In either case, the CO SLED is dominated by a "warm" and "dense" component. Compared to samples of local (Ultra) Luminous Infrared Galaxies ((U)LIRGs), starburst galaxies and high redshift Submillimeter Galaxies (SMGs), J2310+1855 exhibits higher CO excitation at ($J \geq 8$), like other high redshift quasars. The high CO excitation, together with the enhanced $L_{\rm H_{2}O}/ L_{IR} $, $L_{\rm H_{2}O}/ L_{CO} $ and $L_{OH^{+}}/L_{\rm H_{2}O} $ ratios, suggests that besides the UV radiation from young massive stars, other mechanisms such as shocks, cosmic rays and X-rays might also be responsible for the heating and ionization of the molecular gas. Using the IRAM NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array (NOEMA), we conducted a program to measure redshifts for 13 bright galaxies detected in the Herschel Astrophysical Large Area Survey (H-ATLAS) with $S_{500{\mu}\rm m}\ge$80 mJy. We report reliable spectroscopic redshifts for 12 individual sources, which are derived from scans of the 3 and 2 mm bands, covering up to 31 GHz in each band, and are based on the detection of at least two emission lines. The spectroscopic redshifts are in the range $2.08 10^{13}\,L_\odot$ galaxies. We also present a reanalysis of the spectral energy distributions including the continuum flux densities measured at 3 and 2 mm to derive the overall properties of the sources. Future prospects based on these efficient measurements of redshifts of high-z galaxies using NOEMA are outlined, including a comprehensive survey of all the brightest Herschel galaxies., Comment: 18 pages, 21 figures

We present ALMA observations of the CO(1-0) line and 3-mm continuum emission in eight ultraluminous infrared (IR) quasi-stellar objects (QSOs) at z = 0.06-0.19. All eight IR QSO hosts are clearly resolved in their CO molecular gas emission with a median source size of 3.2 kpc, and seven out of eight sources are detected in 3-mm continuum, which is found to be more centrally concentrated with respect to molecular gas with sizes of 0.4-1.0 kpc. Our observations reveal a diversity of CO morphology and kinematics for the IR QSO systems which can be roughly classified into three categories, rotating gas disk with ordered velocity gradient, compact CO peak with disturbed velocity, and multiple CO distinct sources undergoing a merger between luminous QSO and a companion galaxy separated by a few kpc. The molecular gas in three of IR QSO hosts are found to be rotation-dominated with the ratio of the maximum rotation velocity to the local velocity dispersion of $V_{\rm rot}/\sigma=4-6$. Basic estimates of the dynamical masses within the CO-emitting regions give masses between $7.4\times10^9$ and $6.9\times10^{10}$ $M_\odot$. We find an increasing trend between BH mass accretion rate and star formation rate (SFR) over three orders of magnitude in far-IR luminosity/SFR, in line with the correlation between QSO bolometric luminosity and SF activity, indicative of a likely direct connection between AGN and SF activity over galaxy evolution timescales., Comment: 25 pages, 7 figures, and 4 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

The largest Herschel extragalactic surveys, H-ATLAS and HerMES, have selected a sample of "ultrared" dusty, star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) with rising SPIRE flux densities ($S_{500} > S_{350} > S_{250}$; so-called "500 $\mu$m-risers") as an efficient way for identifying DSFGs at higher redshift ($z > 4$). In this paper, we present a large Spitzer follow-up program of 300 Herschel ultrared DSFGs. We have obtained high-resolution ALMA, NOEMA, and SMA data for 63 of them, which allow us to securely identify the Spitzer/IRAC counterparts and classify them as gravitationally lensed or unlensed. Within the 63 ultrared sources with high-resolution data, $\sim$65% appear to be unlensed, and $\sim$27% are resolved into multiple components. We focus on analyzing the unlensed sample by directly performing multi-wavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) modeling to derive their physical properties and compare with the more numerous $z \sim 2$ DSFG population. The ultrared sample has a median redshift of 3.3, stellar mass of 3.7 $\times$ 10$^{11}$ $M_{\odot}$, star formation rate (SFR) of 730 $M_{\odot}$yr$^{-1}$, total dust luminosity of 9.0 $\times$ 10$^{12}$ $L_{\odot}$, dust mass of 2.8 $\times$ 10$^9$ $M_{\odot}$, and V-band extinction of 4.0, which are all higher than those of the ALESS DSFGs. Based on the space density, SFR density, and stellar mass density estimates, we conclude that our ultrared sample cannot account for the majority of the star-forming progenitors of the massive, quiescent galaxies found in infrared surveys. Our sample contains the rarer, intrinsically most dusty, luminous and massive galaxies in the early universe that will help us understand the physical drivers of extreme star formation., Comment: 33 pages, 10 figures; accepted for publication in ApJS. We present the discovery of HLock01-LAB, a luminous and large Lya nebula at z=3.326. Medium-band imaging and long-slit spectroscopic observations with the Gran Telescopio Canarias reveal extended emission in the Lya 1215\AA, CIV1550\AA, and HeII 1640\AA lines over ~100kpc, and a total luminosity L(Lya)=(6.4+/-0.1)x10^44 erg s^-1. HLock01-LAB presents an elongated morphology aligned with two faint radio sources contained within the central ~8kpc of the nebula. The radio structures are consistent to be faint radio jets or lobes of a central galaxy, whose spectrum shows nebular emission characteristic of a type-II active galactic nucleus (AGN). The continuum emission of the AGN at short wavelengths is, however, likely dominated by stellar emission of the host galaxy, for which we derive a stellar mass M* = 2.3x10^11 Msun. The detection of extended emission in CIV and CIII] indicates that the gas within the nebula is not primordial. Feedback may have enriched the halo at at least 50 kpc from the nuclear region. Using rest-frame UV emission-line diagnostics, we find that the gas in the nebula is likely heated by the AGN. Nevertheless, at the center of the nebula we find extreme emission line ratios of Lya/CIV~60 and Lya/HeII~80, one of the highest values measured to date, and well above the standard values of photoionization models (Lya/HeII~30 for case B photoionization). Our data suggest that jet-induced shocks are likely responsible for the increase of the electron temperature and, thus, the observed Lya enhancement in the center of the nebula. This scenario is further supported by the presence of radio structures and perturbed kinematics in this region. The large Lya luminosity in HLock01-LAB is likely due to a combination of AGN photoionization and jet-induced shocks, highlighting the diversity of sources of energy powering Lya nebulae. We present ALMA observations of the [CII] 158 $\mu$m fine structure line and dust continuum emission from two quasars, SDSS J104433.04-012502.2 and SDSS J012958.51-003539.7, at z=5.78. The ALMA observations at 0.2'' resolution map the dust and gas on kpc scales. The spatially resolved emission shows a similar trend of decreasing [CII]-FIR ratios with increasing FIR surface brightnesses as was found in the infrared luminous galaxies with intense star formation. We confirm the velocity gradients of [CII] emission found previously in SDSS J0129-0035. No clear evidence of order motion is detected in SDSS J1044-0125. The velocity maps and PV-diagrams also suggest turbulent gas clumps in both objects. We tentatively detect a [CII] peak offset 4.9 kpc to the East of SDSS J1044-0125. This may be associated with an infalling companion, or node of gas outflow. All these results suggest significant dynamical evolution of the ISM in the nuclear region of these young quasar-starburst systems. We fit the velocity map of the [CII] emission from SDSS J0129-0035 with a rotating disk model. The result suggests a face-on system with an inclination angle of 16 +/- 20 degree and constrains the lower limit of the host galaxy dynamical mass to be 2.6x10^10 Msun within the [CII] emitting region. It is likely that SDSS J0129-0035, as well as other young quasars with super massive black hole masses on order of 10^7 to 10^8 Msun, falls close to the black hole and host galaxy mass relation defined by local galaxies., Comment: 34 pages 11 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

The identification of the carriers of the diffuse interstellar bands (DIBs) remains to be established, with the exception of five bands attributed to C60+, although it is generally agreed that DIB carriers should be large carbon-based molecules (with ~10-100 atoms) in the gas phase, such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), long carbon chains or fullerenes. More specific possible carriers among PAHs are investigated, namely elongated molecules, which could explain a correlation between the DIB wavelength and the apparent UV resilience of their carriers. We address the case of polyacenes, C4N+2-H2N+4, with N~10-18 fused rectilinear aligned hexagons. Polyacenes are attractive DIB carrier candidates because their high symmetry and large linear size allow them to form regular series of bands in the visible range with strengths larger than most other PAHs, as confirmed by recent laboratory results up to undecacene (C46H26). Those with very strong bands in the DIB spectral domain are just at the limit of stability against UV photodissociation. They are part of the prominent PAH family of interstellar carbon compounds, meaning that only ~10-5 of the total PAH abundance is enough to account for a medium-strength DIB. After summarizing the current knowledge about the properties of polyacenes and recent laboratory results, the likelihood that they might meet the criteria for being carriers of some DIBs is addressed by reviewing the following properties: wavelength and strength of their series of visible bands; interstellar stability and abundances, charge state and hydrogenation; and DIB rotation profiles. No definite inconsistency has been identified that precludes polyacenes from being the carriers of some DIBs with medium or weak strength, including the so-called C2 DIBs. But additional experimental data about long acenes and their visible bands are needed to make robust conclusions, Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We present Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) observations of the CO (2$-$1) line emission towards three far-infrared luminous quasars at $z\sim6$: SDSS J231038.88$+$185519.7 and SDSS J012958.51$-$003539.7 with $\sim0\farcs6$ resolution and SDSS J205406.42$-$000514.8 with $\sim2\farcs1$ resolution. All three sources are detected in the CO (2$-$1) line emission -- one source is marginally resolved, and the other two appear as point sources. Measurements of the CO (2$-$1) line emission allow us to calculate the molecular gas mass even without a CO excitation model. The inferred molecular gas masses are (0.8$-$4.3) $\times$ 10$^{10}$ $M_{\odot}$. The widths and redshifts derived from the CO (2$-$1) line are consistent with previous CO (6$-$5) and [\ion{C}{2}] measurements. We also report continuum measurements using the Herschel for SDSS J231038.88$+$185519.7 and SDSS J012958.51$-$003539.7, and for SDSS J231038.88+185519.7, data obtained at $\sim140$ and $\sim300$ GHz using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA). In the case of SDSS J231038.88+185519.7, we present a detailed analysis of the spectral energy distribution and derive the dust temperature ($\sim40$ K), the dust mass ($\sim10^{9}$ $M_{\odot}$), the far-infrared luminosity (8$-$1000 $\mu$m; $\sim10^{13}$ $ L_{\odot}$) and the star formation rate (2400$-$2700 $M_{\odot}$ yr$^{-1}$). Finally, an analysis of the photo-dissociation regions associated with the three high redshift quasars indicates that the interstellar medium in these sources has similar properties to local starburst galaxies., Comment: 30 pages; submitted to ApJ; overall the referee's report is positive

Using ALMA, we report high angular-resolution observations of the redshift z=3.63 galaxy, G09v1.97, one of the most luminous strongly lensed galaxies discovered by the H-ATLAS survey. We present 0"2-0"4 resolution images of the rest-frame 188 and 419$\mu$m dust continuum and the CO(6-5), H2O(211-202) and J=2 H2O+ line emission. We also report the detection of H$_2^{18}$O in this source. The dust continuum and molecular gas emission are resolved into a nearly complete ~1"5 diameter Einstein ring plus a weaker image in the center, which is caused by a special dual deflector lensing configuration. The observed line profiles of the CO, H2O and H2O+ lines are strikingly similar. In the source plane, we reconstruct the dust continuum images and the spectral cubes of the line emission at sub-kpc scales. The reconstructed dust emission in the source plane is dominated by a compact disk with an effective radius of 0.7kpc plus an overlapping extended disk with a radius twice as large. While the average magnification for the dust continuum is $\mu$~10-11, the magnification of the line emission varies 5 to 22 across different velocity components. The emission lines have similar spatial and kinematic distributions. The molecular gas and dust content reveal that G09v1.97 is a gas-rich major merger in its pre-coalescence phase. Both of the merging companions are intrinsically ULIRGs with LIR reaching $\gtrsim 4\times10^{12}L_\odot$, and the total LIR of G09v1.97 is $1.4\times10^{13}L_\odot$. The approaching southern galaxy shows no obvious kinematic structure with a semi-major half-light radius a_s=0.4kpc, while the receding galaxy resembles an a_s=1.2kpc rotating disk. The two galaxies are separated by a projected distance of 1.3kpc, bridged by weak line emission that is co-spatially located with the cold-dust-emission peak, suggesting a large amount of cold ISM in the interacting region. We present CO(J= 1-0; 3-2; 5-4; 10-9) and 1.2-kpc resolution [CII] line observations of the dusty star-forming galaxy (SFG) HXMM05 -- carried out with the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array, the Combined Array for Research in Millimeter-wave Astronomy, the Plateau de Bure Interferometer, and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, measuring an unambiguous redshift of z = 2.9850+/-0.0009. We find that HXMM05 is a hyper-luminous infrared galaxy (LIR=(4+/-1)x10^13 Lsun) with a total molecular gas mass of (2.1+/-0.7)x10^11 (alpha_CO/0.8) Msun. The CO(J=1-0) and [CII] emission are extended over ~9 kpc in diameter, and the CO line FWHM exceeds 1100 km s^-1. The [CII] emission shows a monotonic velocity gradient consistent with a disk, with a maximum rotation velocity of v_c = 616+/-100 km s^-1 and a dynamical mass of (7.7+/-3.1)x10^11 Msun. We find a star formation rate (SFR) of 2900^750_-595 Msun yr^-1. HXMM05 is thus among the most intensely star-forming galaxies known at high redshift. Photo-dissociation region modeling suggests physical conditions similar to nearby SFGs, showing extended star formation, which is consistent with our finding that the gas and dust emission are co-spatial. Its molecular gas excitation resembles the local major merger Arp 220. The broad CO and [CII] lines and a pair of compact dust nuclei suggest the presence of a late-stage major merger at the center of the extended disk, again reminiscent of Arp 220. The observed gas kinematics and conditions together with the presence of a companion and the pair of nuclei suggest that HXMM05 is experiencing multiple mergers as a part of the evolution., Comment: 32 pages, 19 figures, 7 tables.
