Nigeria's high poverty rate might be linked to the country's failure to develop its industrial sector over the past years. Against this background, this study examined the influence of industrial expansion on poverty reduction in Nigeria. Data from, 1990 to 2021 were estimated using completely modified ordinary least squares method and Pairwise Granger causality respectively. According to the study's findings, manufacturing value added and human capital development are inversely related in Nigeria but statistically not significant. This is an indication that industrial development has a less capacity to reduce poverty in Nigeria, which is contrary to the aprori expectation. The deficiency in industrial development in Nigeria might account for this result. Furthermore, there is no causal link between industrial value added and the human development index. This implies that the current level of industrial development in Nigeria could not reduce poverty in the country. Based on these findings, the study recommends for the Nigerian policymakers, among other things, that policies and programme that would drive industrial expansion should be embarked upon in the country, this would boost job creation, output growth, and eventually eliminate poverty in the country. The aim of this study is to examine interaction among FDI, employment generation and poverty reduction in ECOWAS sub region over the periods of 1990 to 2019. Even though past studies have established the linkages among FDI inflows, employment, and poverty ameiloration in various economies, yet the dynamic relationship among these variables has been ignored in developing countries, especially ECOWAS Sub-Region. To this end we estimated causal relationship, Pairwise Dumitrescu Hurlin Panel Causality Tests. The results of the causal relationship state that poverty reduction in terms of human capacity development is a critical variable stimulating employment generation and FDI inflows in ECOWAS sub region in the past three decade. Arising from the study's findings, the following vital policy recommendations are made for policymakers in ECOWAS sub region and other developing countries in Africa and beyond in general that employment generation should be considered as an urgent policy whenever policymakers desire to raise the level of FDI inflows and poverty reduction in the sub region. The study investigates asymmetric impact of government expenditure on the economic growth of Nigeria using secondary data that spans through 1981 through 2018. In capturing the asymmetric impact, the study adopted the Non-Linear Auto-regressive Distributed Lag (NARDL) model. Government expenditure components (recurrent and capital expenditure) were decomposed to positive and negative changes due to government review. From the result, it was confirmed that in the short-run, both positive and negative changes in recurrent and capital expenditure had a significant positive impact on economic growth in Nigeria at different time lag. In the long-run, positive changes in recurrent expenditure have a negative impact on economic growth, while negative changes have a positive significant impact on economic growth in Nigeria. Positive changes in capital expenditure have a positive impact on economic growth, while negative changes has a negative 5% significant impact on economic growth. It was concluded from the findings that government expenditure plans has a significant impact on the economic growth of Nigeria in the short-run and long-run. Therefore, it is recommended that government should rebalance its plans between capital and recurrent expenditure to enhance its growth target. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In Sub‐Sahara Africa, few studies have been conducted on how unemployment affects monetary policy in each country. Even an aggregate study of the phenomenon in Sub‐Sahara Africa is near absent despite a high level of unemployment in the region. To investigate the empirical link between unemployment and monetary policy, the study employs a sample of 37 countries in Sub‐Sahara Africa for the period 2011–2017. Data were obtained from the World Bank and International Monetary Fund database. Using the difference Generalized Method of Moments model, the study determines how monetary policy (using the lending rate as proxy) responds to unemployment, employer's condition and total labour force in Sub‐Sahara Africa. We found that monetary policy indirectly responds to employer's condition, but the positive effect of the total labour force on monetary policy is relatively higher than total unemployment as a percentage of the labour force in the region. The study concludes that a linkage exists between monetary policy and employment indicators in Sub‐Sahara Africa and therefore, made some policy recommendations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study investigates the potential short-run and long-run impact of global Covid-19 confirmed cases on oil price, considering the gradual easing of lockdown measures adopted by countries to limit the spread of the virus which has caused havoc to the global oil price through shattered demand. The ARDL model is adopted to estimate the parameters. From the result, it was observed that oil price increases by 2% for every 1% change in the total number of confirmed Covid-19 cases as economies are considering lockdown easing. In the long-run, about 10% potential increase in oil price is expected for everyone percentage change in the Covid-19 total confirmed cases in the world as economies lockdown easing are increasing. The error correction confirms that as the ease continues, about 21% of the disequilibrium caused by the virus outbreak in the short-run will be corrected in the long-run. From the findings, the study concluded that the submissions are valid considering the time period covered. Therefore, more policies towards stimulating the global economy and encouraging gradual easing for economies experiencing lower daily confirmed cases in increase activities that may increase the demand for oil for its price to appreciate. Considering Nigeria as an oil dependent country, fluctuations in oil prices as a result of policy competition between OPEC and oil shale producing countries (such as the United States and Canada) in recent years has posed an impediment on the current account balances of Nigeria. This study investigates the relationship between oil price fluctuations and the current account balances in Nigeria. The study used a time series data sample from 1977 to 2015. The Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) was used to estimate the relationship between the current account and oil price fluctuations in the short-run and long-run. It was argued from the findings that in the short-run, the oil price had a positive but insignificant impact on the current account balances, while in the long-run, it impacted negatively, but was found to be a significant determinant of current account balances in the economy. Other variables such as population growth (POP), gross domestic product (GDP) and trade (T) had an insignificant relationship with the current account balances in the short-run, while in the long-run, only GDP and oil price (OP) were found to be significant determinants of the current account balances in the economy. The study, therefore, concludes that better performances of the current account balance in the Nigerian economy are a function of the stability in the oil price. From the findings, it was recommended that the economy should be tailored towards mitigating the shocks in oil price through considering alternative means of trade. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The study investigates the impact of oil price fluctuations on foreign direct investment inflows in developing oil exporting countries using Nigeria as a case study by ARDL method and VECM granger causality test to analyse the data spanning from 1970 to 2015. It was observed that oil price fluctuations do not favour foreign direct investment in Nigeria both in the long-run and short-run. This implies that as oil price changes foreign direct investment inflows falls. VECM granger causality test revealed that there is no direction of causality between oil price fluctuations and foreign direct investment inflows in Nigeria. We therefore concluded that oil price is not an important determinant of foreign direct investment inflows. The study recommends that government should take the advantage of times of positive change in the oil price to fix the needs to attract foreign direct investment inflows in the economy. This study investigates the impact of unemployment on economic growth in Nigeria in the 21st century using a Vector Autoregressive (VAR) approach using a secondary data spanning from 1986 to 2015. It aims at examining the dynamic effect of unemployment on growth in the context of Nigeria using the VAR approach to analyse the variations. Different methods such as the Augmented Dickey Fuller (ADF) test, johansen cointegration test, VAR model, impulse response test and variance decomposition test were employed to analyse the data. It was observed that the impact of unemployment vary over time as effort towards eradicating it are been made by the government in the country. The implication of the study is to inform researchers on the VAR model as an appropriate approach for dynamic analysis, to urge academicians to be more informative on the dynamic effects of unemployment in the economy and to provide guidance to the government on the appropriate policy to adopt to tackle the issue of unemployment and inflation in the country. The study examines the interactive effects of the relationship between human capital investment components and economic growth in Nigeria for the period of 1986 - 2014. Although, various studies have focused on the relationship between human capital and economic growth all over the world but there is still a missing gap on the joint influence of human capital investment components on economic growth particularly in Nigeria. The study employs secondary annual data on education expenditure; health expenditure; real gross domestic product and gross capital formation obtain from the Central Bank Statistical bulletin, 2014 and analyze using Fully Modified Ordinary Least Squares (FMOLS) technique. The results of the study show that there is positive and significant relationship between the interactive effects of human capital components and growth in Nigeria. The study educates the government and policy makers on the importance of policy mix in terms of how human capital development enhances growth in Nigeria than embarking on the use of one policy instrument. The paper therefore contributes to knowledge by providing information on the interactive effects of education and health on growth in Nigeria. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
