Background: This study compared the rate of thromboembolic events during carotid angioplasty and stenting (CAS) with and without embolic protection devices (EPDs). We reviewed literature to find studies comparing embolic event rates during CAS with and without EPDs and conducted a meta-analysis to determine the safer approach. Methods: The Embase, PubMed, and Web of Science databases were thoroughly searched following PRISMA guidelines. Each estimation was executed using random-effects models. The I2 index was used to assess the heterogeneity among the studies. Egger and Begg’s tests were applied to evaluate publication bias. Stata version 14.2 was used for statistical analysis. Results: For 25% of patients, an EPD was used during CAS, and for 75% it was not. Of the patients undergoing CAS, the prevalences of hypertension, diabetes mellitus, coronary artery disease, and cigarette smoking were 81%, 37%, 39% and 43%, respectively. In total, of the patients included 52% were symptomatic and 48% were asymptomatic. The mortality rate reduced from 2% in the no-EPD subgroup to 1% in the EPD subgroup. The occurrence of all other complications was also reportedly higher in patients who did not receive an EPD, including major stroke and myocardial infarction, except for minor events, which were reported to be almost the same in both subgroups. Conclusions: We found that the use of an EPD can help reduce the occurrence of thromboembolic complications of CAS, including myocardial infarction, major stroke, and death. Altogether, our results suggest that the benefits of using an EPD during CAS outweigh its risks.

Intracranial hypotension (IH) represents a rare complication, mainly following cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) leakage at the thoracic or cervicothoracic junction level. Iatrogenic IH may be expected secondary to the previous surgery or other procedures invading the patient's dura. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), computerized tomography (CT) scan images, CT cisternography, and magnetic resonance cerebrospinal fluid flow (MR CSF) remains the modality of choice to establish the diagnosis. The patient is in her late sixth decade, reflecting a history of progressive headaches, nausea, and vomiting. Once a diagnosis of foramen magnum meningioma was established using MRI, total microscopic resection was applied. Brain sagging and subdural fluid collection were identified on postoperative day three, suggesting intracranial hypotension due to cerebrospinal fluid leakage. Diagnosing IH following the CSF leak during the postoperative phase remains challenging. Although rare, early clinical suspicion must be considered to establish the diagnosis.

The skull's aneurysmal bone cyst (ABC) represents a rare benign non-neoplastic lesion that usually occurs before the 3rd decade of life. ABC frequently occurs in the long tubular bones. However, skull bone involvement remains rare and limited to the report of cases. The authors report a 17-year-old male with an ABC in his left frontal bone. A Gross total resection (GTR) was performed under general anesthesia accompanied by an en-block resection. Cranioplasty was performed using an accurately curved titanium mesh plate. Postoperative CT scan showed complete resection.

Objective: Craniopharyngiomas are tumors derived from the remains of epithelial cells that are attributed to incomplete closure of the pituitary or cricopharyngeal ducts. Although the tumor is considered benign, it has significant complications at diagnosis and following full resolution. The present study aimed to determine the prevalence and predictive factors of diabetes insipidus (DI) shortly after craniopharyngioma surgery. Methods: This study was retrospectively performed on 46 patients suffering from craniopharyngioma referred to Loghman Hakim Hospital sparing from 2011 to 2016. In patients with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computerized tomography (CT) scans, endocrinology tests, other related tests, and complete neuromuscular examinations were performed before and after surgery. All patient information was collected descriptively according to their case, and quantitative data are displayed using mean, Standard Deviation, intermediate, and Interquartile range, and qualitative data are displayed using frequency and percentage. For analytical analysis, the data were calculated from independent samples t, Mann-Whitney statistical tests, K2 test, and, if necessary, Fisher's precise P-Value. A significant level was considered for the 5 % statistical tests, and the SPSS statistical software version 25 was used to analyze the data. Results: Most patients were male (58 %), and the mean age of patients was 33 years, the youngest being 5 years and the oldest being 71 years. Patients' symptoms at the time of referral include visual impairment (58 %), headache (56 %), balance disorder 19 %, nausea and vomiting 13 %, and memory impairment (8 %). The prevalence of DI was reported to be 50 % after surgery, significantly associated with tumor size. No other significant association was found between the plurality of DI after surgery and other variables studied. Conclusions: The present study showed no predictive factor for post-operative DI in patients with craniopharyngioma. It can only be concluded that patients with larger tumor sizes are more likely to develop DI; however, more studies are warranted to achieve a definitive conclusion.

Abstract The COVID-19 outbreak affected mental health globally. One of the major concerns following the COVID-19 pandemic was increased incidence of risky behaviors including alcohol consumption. This study evaluates the trend of alcohol poisoning in Loghman-Hakim Hospital (LHH), the main referral center of poisoning in Tehran, during the 2-year period from 1 year prior to 1 year after the onset (February 23rd, 2020) of the COVID-19 epidemic in Iran. All patients admitted with alcohol intoxication from February 23rd, 2019 to February 22nd, 2021 were evaluated and patient data extracted from LHH electronic hospital records. Alcohols were categorized as toxic (methyl alcohol) and non-toxic (ethyl alcohol). Of 2483 patients admitted, 796/14,493 (5.49%) and 1687/13,883 (12.15%) had been hospitalized before and after the onset of the COVID-19 epidemic in Iran, respectively. Background: We evaluated the levels of the tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and caspase-3 in the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) and serum of COVID-19 patients to improve our knowledge about underlying mechanisms caused by this virus in central nervous system involvement. Case Presentation: This case series study included six COVID-19 patients from March 26, 2020, to April 17, 2020, and six healthy control patients. CSF and serum levels of TNF-α, IL-1β, and caspase-3 have been assayed using monoclonal antibodies-based ELISAs. Abstract Type 1 Interferons (IFNs) have been associated with positive effects on Coronaviruses. Previous studies point towards the superior potency of IFNβ compared to IFNα against viral infections. We conducted a three-armed, individually-randomized, open-label, controlled trial of IFNβ1a and IFNβ1b, comparing them against each other and a control group. Patients were randomly assigned in a 1:1:1 ratio to IFNβ1a (subcutaneous injections of 12,000 IU on days 1, 3, 6), IFNβ1b (subcutaneous injections of 8,000,000 IU on days 1, 3, 6), or the control group. All three arms orally received Lopinavir/Ritonavir (400 mg/100 mg twice a day for ten days) and a single dose of Hydroxychloroquine 400 mg on the first day. Our utilized primary outcome measure was Time To Clinical Improvement (TTCI) defined as the time from enrollment to discharge or a decline of two steps on the clinical seven-step ordinal scale, whichsoever came first. A total of 60 severely ill patients with positive RT-PCR and Chest CT scans underwent randomization (20 patients to each arm). In the Intention-To-Treat population, IFNβ1a was associated with a significant difference against the control group, in the TTCI; (HR; 2.36, 95% CI 1.10–5.17, P-value = 0.031) while the IFNβ1b indicated no significant difference compared with the control; HR; 1.42, (95% CI 0.63–3.16, P-value = 0.395). The median TTCI for both of the intervention groups was five days vs. seven days for the control group. The mortality was numerically lower in both of the intervention groups (20% in the IFNβ1a group and 30% in the IFNβ1b group vs. 45% in the control group). There were no significant differences between the three arms regarding the adverse events. In patients with laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection, as compared with the base therapeutic regiment, the benefit of a significant reduction in TTCI was observed in the IFNβ1a arm. Introduction: Oxidative stress has recently emerged as a possible mechanism in the pathogenesis of epilepsy. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is a strong endogenous antioxidant that protects cells from lipid oxidation and Reactive Oxygen Species (ROS) production; however, the impact of CoQ10 on seizure characteristics in epileptic patients is unclear. Methods: The current study enrolled patients with Epileptic Seizure (ES) to evaluate their serum concentration of CoQ10 and to investigate whether a relationship exists between CoQ10 levels with the duration, frequency, and type of seizure. Background and Objective: Evidence from past wars of human history and the present century presents undeniable examples revealing the importance of civil defense. In Iran, there have been numerous attacks with a variety of chemical gases during the eight years of the battle with Iraq. In addition, unintended accidents during earthquakes, hurricanes, and car accidents while transporting chemicals and chemical gases, although rare, are inevitable. For example, large-scale chlorine gas emissions have occurred. Because these events are rare, ED personnel are often not prepared enough to play an effective role in such situation, especially in the early golden hours after their happening. Due to lack of observation and repetition, preparedness of medical centers in terms of equipment and trained staff after the occurrence of attacks and accidents is a basic necessity. According to its inherent duties, Iranian civil defense organization is responsible for training and taking action to prepare hospital staff. This project, supported by this organization, aims to report how to confront with an accident or chemical attack in Loghman Hakim Hospital, a tertiary referral center for poisonings in Tehran, Iran, in 2019. Materials and Methods: This project was performed as a maneuver with participation of 65 physicians, hospital personnel, and students at Loghman Hakim Hospital affiliated to Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. Initially, training workshops were held to raise the awareness and preparedness of the members of the crisis team and all active staff using existing texts and instructions. Then, a designed imaginary scenario was presented and acted as a maneuver on a non-holiday day between 9.30 AM and 4 PM. Results: Sixty-five physicians, hospital staff, and students attended the maneuver. The findings are reported in three levels of A: directorship and management level reaching almost 70% of its goals; B: operational level reaching about 70% of its goals, and C: termination of the maneuver and initiation of rehabilitation reaching almost 40% of its goals. Conclusion: The maneuver was performed with almost 65% of the aims reached. Physicians and staff readiness was assessed to be moderate. Lack of equipment was undeniably obvious, especially in decontamination tools and protective clothing for employees. In general, our referral center of poisoning is not prepared enough to deal with any chemical accident or attack if it happens. More attention is needed to chemical accident/attack preparedness at least in all referral centers for clinical poisoning throughout the country. Ethical code: IR.SBMU.RETECH.REC.1398.467. Introduction: The outbreak due to Coronavirus Disease 2019 (COVID-19) is n global public health emergency and challenges psychological resilience. The central nervous system, endocrine system, and immune system are complex interacting systems. Cortisol has been implicated as the cause of a wide range of mental and physical health disorders; however, the impact of cortisol on outcomes in patients with COVID-19 is not clear. Methods: The current study enrolled patients with COVID-19 (onset of disease within 7 days of the first symptom) to evaluate the serum concentration of cortisol and levels of anxiety and depression using the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) to investigate a possible relationship between cortisol, depression, and anxiety levels and outcomes of patients with COVID-19. Background: Acromegaly defines as chronic elevations of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-1) and growth hormone (GH), which results in enlargement of organs and soft tissues. Cardiovascular complications of acromegaly such as cardiomegaly, hypertension contributing to a high risk of cardiovascular events. This study aimed to identify the determinants of the prevalence of cardiomegaly as cardiovascular comorbidity of acromegaly and the potential effect of the curative intervention. Methods: A total of 160 patients with acromegaly due to pituitary adenoma participated in this study. Acromegaly diagnosed was based on clinical manifestations, age-adjusted plasma IGF-I, and elevated plasma GH levels, not suppressible during an oral glucose tolerance test (75 g). Electrocardiogram and chest X-ray obtained in all patients. Treatment approaches included transsphenoidal surgery and hormonal evaluation performed before and six months after surgery. Results: The GH serum level was elevated in all patients before surgery, with a mean of 33.7 ng/ mL that reached 5.7 ng/mL after surgery. Mean IGF-1 was 794.1 ng/mL that reached 395.6 ng/mL postoperatively. The prevalence of cardiomegaly was 15% that improved in 5% of patients after trans sphenoidal surgery. Conclusion: Appropriate surgical intervention in acromegaly that complicated by cardiomegaly may result in significant improvement of the cardiac structure.

Background and Importance: Medulloblastoma (MB) is regarded as a scarce primary brain neoplasm in adulthood, originating from the fourth ventricle or the cerebellum, and cerebellopontine angle (CPA)-MB has been described less often in the literature. Few cases of CPA MB have been reported in the English-written literature, most of which are intra-axial, mainly in children; adults' extra-axial CPAMB is even scarcer. To the best of the authors’ knowledge, 12 cases of extra-axial CPA MBs have been reported in the English-written literature. Case Presentation: A 23-year-old man presented to our center complaining of a generalized pulsatile headache, imbalance, swallowing impairment, and right-sided hearing loss for the past 20 days. Computed tomography (CT) scan of the brain showed a hyper-dense extra-axial mass lesion (41*37mm) in the right CPA with a significant compression effect on the fourth ventricle, causing a three ventricular obstructive hydrocephalus. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed a well-defined heterogeneous extra-axial, lobulated, dural-based mass lesion in the right CPA, hypointense on the T1 sequence, and hyperintense on the T2 sequence compared with the adjacent parenchyma, which has a bright heterogeneous enhancement during gadolinium injection. A significant mass effect was observed on the adjacent parenchyma, brain stem, and fourth ventricle without evidence of parenchymal edema. The patient underwent emergent surgery the next day regarding the mass effect and hydrocephalus. On the postoperative examination in the intensive care unit, no new neurological deficit was detected, and the swallowing and gag reflex significantly improved. Conclusion: Though rare, clinical considerations, along with early supportive radiologic measures, should be considered in subjects with suspected MB. A total tumor excision approach followed by aggregative chemotherapy/radiotherapy is designed to hinder tumor relapse.

T-lymphocytes (T cells) play a major role in adaptive immunity and current immune checkpoint inhibitor-based cancer treatments. The regulation of their function is complex, and in addition to cytokines, receptors and transcription factors, several non-coding RNAs (ncRNAs) have been shown to affect differentiation and function of T cells. Among these non-coding RNAs, certain small microRNAs (miRNAs) including miR-15a/16-1, miR-125b-5p, miR-99a-5p, miR-128-3p, let-7 family, miR-210, miR-182-5p, miR-181, miR-155 and miR-10a have been well recognized. Meanwhile, IFNG-AS1, lnc-ITSN1-2, lncRNA-CD160, NEAT1, MEG3, GAS5, NKILA, lnc-EGFR and PVT1 are among long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) that efficiently influence the function of T cells. Recent studies have underscored the effects of a number of circular RNAs, namely circ_0001806, hsa_circ_0045272, hsa_circ_0012919, hsa_circ_0005519 and circHIPK3 in the modulation of T-cell apoptosis, differentiation and secretion of cytokines. This review summarizes the latest news and regulatory roles of these ncRNAs on the function of T cells, with widespread implications on the pathophysiology of autoimmune disorders and cancer.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a heterogeneous degenerative brain disorder with a rising prevalence worldwide. The two hallmarks that characterize the AD pathophysiology are amyloid plaques, generated via aggregated amyloid β, and neurofibrillary tangle, generated via accumulated phosphorylated tau. At the post-transcriptional and transcriptional levels, the regulatory functions of non-coding RNAs, in particular long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs), have been ascertained in gene expressions. It is noteworthy that a number of lncRNAs feature a prevalent role in their potential of regulating gene expression through modulation of microRNAs via a process called the mechanism of competing endogenous RNA (ceRNA). Given the multifactorial nature of ceRNA interaction networks, they might be advantageous in complex disorders (e.g., AD) investigations at the therapeutic targets level. We carried out scoping review in this research to analyze validated loops of ceRNA in AD and focus on ceRNA axes associated with lncRNA. This scoping review was performed according to a six-stage methodology structure and PRISMA guideline. A systematic search of seven databases was conducted to find eligible articles prior to July 2021. Two reviewers independently performed publications screening and data extraction, and quantitative and qualitative analyses were conducted. Fourteen articles were identified that fulfill the inclusion criteria. Studies with different designs reported nine lncRNAs that were experimentally validated to act as ceRNA in AD in human-related studies, including BACE1-AS, SNHG1, RPPH1, NEAT1, LINC00094, SOX21-AS1, LINC00507, MAGI2-AS3, and LINC01311. The BACE1-AS/BACE1 was the most frequent ceRNA pair. Among miRNAs, miR-107 played a key role by regulating three different loops. Understanding the various aspects of this regulatory mechanism can help elucidate the unknown etiology of AD and provide new molecular targets for use in therapeutic and clinical applications.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a severe neurodevelopmental disorder featuring impairment in verbal and non-verbal interactions, defects in social interactions, stereotypic behaviors as well as restricted interests. In recent times, the incidence of ASD is growing at a rapid pace. In spite of great endeavors devoted to explaining ASD pathophysiology, its precise etiology remains unresolved. ASD pathogenesis is related to different phenomena associated with the immune system; however, the mechanisms behind these immune phenomena as well as the potential contributing genes remain unclear. In the current work, we used a bioinformatics approach to describe the role of long non-coding RNA (lncRNA)-associated competing endogenous RNAs (ceRNAs) in the peripheral blood (PB) samples to figure out the molecular regulatory procedures involved in ASD better. The Gene Expression Omnibus database was used to obtain the PB microarray dataset (GSE89594) from the subjects suffering from ASD and control subjects, containing the data related to both mRNAs and lncRNAs. The list of immune-related genes was obtained from the ImmPort database. In order to determine the immune-related differentially expressed mRNAs (DEmRNAs) and lncRNAs (DElncRNAs), the limma package of R software was used. A protein-protein interaction network was developed for the immune-related DEmRNAs. By employing the Human MicroRNA Disease Database, DIANA-LncBase, and DIANA-TarBase databases, the RNA interaction pairs were determined. We used the Pearson correlation coefficient to discover the positive correlations between DElncRNAs and DEmRNAs within the ceRNA network. Finally, the lncRNA-associated ceRNA network was created based on DElncRNA-miRNA-DEmRNA interactions and co-expression interactions. In addition, the KEGG enrichment analysis was conducted for immune-related DEmRNAs found within the constructed network. This work found four potential DElncRNA-miRNA-DEmRNA axes in ASD pathogenesis, including, LINC00472/hsa-miR-221-3p/PTPN11, ANP32A-IT1/hsa-miR-182-5p/S100A2, LINC00472/hsa-miR-132-3p/S100A2, and RBM26-AS1/hsa-miR-182-5p/S100A2. According to pathway enrichment analysis, the immune-related DEmRNAs were enriched in the “JAK-STAT signaling pathway” and “Adipocytokine signaling pathway.” An understanding of regulatory mechanisms of ASD-related immune genes would provide novel insights into the molecular mechanisms behind ASD pathogenesis.

Abstract Background: Liponeurocytoma is a rare tumor of the central nervous system(CNS) characterized by low neuronal proliferation with foci of lipomatous differentiation. to the best of the authors` knowledge, 70 cases of brain liponeurocytoma have been reported which most of them are located in the cerebellar hemisphere but only 7 case of primary cerebellopontine angle liponeurocytoma have been reported till now. Herein we presented a 27 -year-old woman presented to our clinic with a 6-month history of progressive headaches, dizziness. More recently, he developed progressive hearing loss and ataxia. Pre-operative Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain demonstrated a heterogeneous solid extra-axial lesion, in the right cerebellopontine angle with hydrocephalus. The operation was performed via a right retro sigmoid approach. The final histopathological diagnosis was confirmed as liponeurocytoma. Radiation therapy was not done and close observation was maintained during the follow-up for the subsequent 2 years; no signs of recurrence were found.

Glioblastoma is the utmost aggressive diffuse kind of glioma which is originated from astrocytes, neural stem cells or progenitors. This malignant tumor has a poor survival rate. A number of genetic aberrations and somatic mutations have been associated with this kind of cancer. In recent times, the impact of long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) in glioblastoma has been underscored by several investigations. Up-regulation of a number of oncogenic lncRNAs such as H19, MALAT1, SNHGs, MIAT, UCA, HIF1A-AS2 and XIST in addition to down-regulation of other tumor suppressor lncRNAs namely GAS5, RNCR3 and NBAT1 indicate the role of these lncRNAs in the pathogenesis of glioblastoma. Several in vitro and a number of in vivo studies have demonstrated the contribution of these transcripts in the regulation of cell proliferation and apoptosis, cell survival, invasion and metastasis of glioblastoma cells. Moreover, some lncRNAs such as SBF2-AS1 are involved in conferring resistance to temozolomide. Finally, few circularRNAs have been identified that influence the evolution of glioblastoma. In this paper, we discuss the impacts of lncRNAs in the pathogenesis of glioblastoma, their applications as markers and their implications in the therapeutic responses in this kind of cancer.

Neuroblastoma is one of the utmost frequent neoplasms during the first year of life. This pediatric cancer is believed to be originated during the embryonic life from the neural crest cells. Previous studies have detected several types of chromosomal aberrations in this tumor. More recent studies have emphasized on expression profiling of neuroblastoma samples to identify the dysregulated genes in this type of cancer. Non-coding RNAs are among the mostly dysregulated genes in this type of cancer. Such dysregulation has been associated with a number of chromosomal aberrations that are frequently detected in neuroblastoma. In this study, we explain the role of non-coding transcripts in the malignant transformation in neuroblastoma and their role as biomarkers for this pediatric cancer.

Background and Importance: Arachnoid cysts are benign nontumoral lesions that are usually found incidentally in brain imaging. Suprasellar Arachnoid Cysts (SSACs) are rare. They can cause hydrocephalus and increased intracranial pressure, lower cranial nerve impairment and endocrine disorder. Sometimes arachnoid cysts become complicated by subdural hematoma/hygroma. Case Presentation: We describe a patient with a suprasellar arachnoid cyst that was complicated with symptomatic subdural effusion and increased intracranial pressure after minor trauma. Conclusion: Although these cysts are rarely complicated with subdural hematoma/hygroma, and intracystic hemorrhage, the probability of subsequent subdural hygroma and increased intracranial pressure should not be underestimated.

Background and Importance: This interesting case is about the presence of normal pressure hydrocephalus and a large pseudomeningocele at the same time after 13 months of posterior fossa surgery. Although the occurrence of a pseudomeningocele following posterior fossa surgery is not so rare, such a late large pseudomeningocele development with signs and symptoms of NPH after 13 months of surgery is rather peculiar. Case Presentation: A 59-year-old man referred to our clinic for a cerebellopontine angle tumor. The patient presented with right hearing loss and mild facial palsy. We operated the patient with retrosigmoid approach, and we discharged him after five days. After about 13 months, the patient referred to our center again with complaint of progressive bulging of previous surgical region and gait apraxia, urinary incontinence and dementia. A large pseudomeningocele in the site of previous surgery was seen. Conclusion: The authors presented a case report on late development (13 months) of a huge pseudomeningocele following vestibular schwannoma surgery with signs and symptoms of normal pressure hydrocephalus. Such a late big pseudomeningocele presentation with signs and symptoms of normal pressure hydrocephalus after posterior fossa surgery is peculiar.

Background: Trochlear nerve schwannoma is a very rare tumor encountered especially in patients without type 2 neurofibromatosis (NF2). Most of the time, this tumor is diagnosed intraoperatively. We describe a rare case of trochlear nerve schwannoma. Clinical Presentation: A 63-year-old male presented with generalized headache from 8 months earlier, without nausea and vomiting. The headache had worsened during the last months. Clinically, he suffered from transient diplopia. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) demonstrated a mass in the left ambient and interpeduncular cisterns that was compressing the midbrain and upper pons. The preoperative impression was of trigeminal schwannoma. However, intraoperatively, the tumor originated in the trochlear nerve. The mass was removed entirely via left suboccipital retrosigmoid approach. The histopathology diagnosis confirmed schwannoma. The patient's diplopia did not improve postoperatively. Conclusion: Trochlear nerve schwannoma is a rare type of schwannoma and in almost all of the cases is diagnosed intraoperatively. There are three types of trochlear nerve schwannoma according to the classification proposed for trigeminal schwannoma: cisternal type—confined to the precavernous segment of the trochlear nerve; cistocavernous type—invading the cavernous sinus and the retroclival and retropetrosal cistern; cavernous type—located in the middle cranial fossa on the cavernous or paracavernous segment of the fourth cranial nerves, with or without cavernous sinus invasion. The cisternal type was the most common type encountered in previous studies. The clinical signs and symptoms of trochlear nerve schwannoma are similar to the trigeminal schwannoma and should be considered in the differential diagnosis of trigeminal schwannoma.

Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate the feasibility and effectiveness of endoscopic neurosurgery for patients with third ventricular colloid cysts without ventriculomegaly. Methods: Seventy-one patients with third ventricular colloid cysts were identified and recruited to this study. Eighteen of these patients did not have concomitant hydrocephalus and underwent primary endoscopic surgery for cyst resection. The surgical technique, the success rate, and patients’ outcome were assessed and compared with 53 hydrocephalic patients who underwent similar procedures. Results: The ventricular compartments were successfully cannulated and gross total resectin of the colloid cysts was achieved in all patients. There were no operative complications related to the endoscopic procedure. Two patients required subsequent intervention for hydrocephalus. The success rate for endoscopic surgery in non-hydrocephalic patients was similar to its value in patients with hydrocephalus. Conclusion: Endoscopic resection of third ventricular colloid cyst in patients without hydrocephalus seems to be feasible, effective and not contraindicated.
