Purpose: Lung transplantation (LTx) is a potential intervention for end-stage COVID-19 lung disease. Current literature is sparse regarding the outcomes of LTx for COVID-19 related acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and pulmonary fibrosis (PF). This study aims to characterize outcomes and patterns of LTx for COVID-19 related lung disease throughout the pandemic. Methods: Patients who underwent LTx during the pandemic for COVID-19 related lung disease were retrospectively identified using the UNOS registry. Demographics, as well as outcomes measures and nationwide patterns of care were collected and analyzed. Results: A total of 510 adult cases of LTx for COVID-19 (259 ARDS, 251 PF) were compared to 4,031 without COVID-19 (3,994 PF, 37 ARDS). Patients who received LTx for COVID-19 ARDS did not differ in 2-year survival when compared to those with COVID-19 PF (81.9% vs 77.2%, p = 0.4428). Compared to non-COVID-19 etiologies, COVID-19 ARDS patients had higher rates of stroke (2.3% vs 0%, p = 0.0005), lower rates of graft failure (12.8% vs 36.1%, p = 0.0003) and post-transplant ECMO (29.6% vs 41.7%, p = 0.0002), and improved 2-year survival following LTx (81.9% vs 61.7%, p = 0.0064). No difference in 2-year survival following LTx was observed between patients with COVID-19 and non-COVID-19 PF (77.2% vs 71.8%, p = 0.34). Rates of LTx spiked with variant emergence and declined with rounds of vaccination. Conclusion: Our results are consistent with early reports of survival outcomes following LTx for COVID-19 ARDS and PF while providing an increased layer of granularity. Objectives: This study examined the effect of a 4-week unsweetened cranberry beverage (CRAN) (317 mg polyphenols) versus placebo beverage (PLAC) ingestion (240 mL/day) on moderating exercise-induced changes in innate immunity. Methods: Participants included 25 male and female non-elite cyclists. A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blind crossover design was used with two 4-week supplementation periods and a 2-week washout period. Supplementation periods were followed by an intensive 2.25 h cycling bout. Six blood samples were collected before and after supplementation (in an overnight fasted state) and at 0 h, 1.5 h, 3 h, and 24 h post-exercise. Stool and urine samples were collected pre- and post-supplementation. Outcome measures included serum creatine kinase, myoglobin, and cortisol, complete blood counts, plasma untargeted proteomics, plasma-targeted oxylipins, untargeted urine metabolomics, and stool microbiome composition via whole genome shotgun (WGS) sequencing. Results: Urine CRAN-linked metabolites increased significantly after supplementation, but no trial differences in alpha or beta microbiota diversity were found in the stool samples. The 2.25 h cycling bout caused significant increases in plasma arachidonic acid (ARA) and 53 oxylipins (FDR q-value < 0.05). The patterns of increase for ARA, four oxylipins generated from ARA-cytochrome P-450 (CYP) (5,6-, 8,9-, 11,12-, and 14,15-diHETrEs), two oxylipins from linoleic acid (LA) and CYP (9,10-DiHOME, 12,13-DiHOME), and two oxylipins generated from LA and lipoxygenase (LOX) (9-HODE, 13-HODE) were slightly but significantly higher for the CRAN versus PLAC trial (all interaction effects, p < 0.05). The untargeted proteomics analysis showed that two protein clusters differed significantly between the CRAN and PLAC trials, with CRAN-related elevations in proteins related to innate immune activation and reduced levels of proteins related to the regulation of the complement cascade, platelet activation, and binding and uptake of ligands by scavenger receptors. No trial differences were found for cortisol and muscle damage biomarkers. Conclusions: CRAN versus PLAC juice resulted in a significant increase in CRAN-related metabolites but no differences in the gut microbiome. CRAN supplementation was associated with a transient and modest but significant post-exercise elevation in selected oxylipins and proteins associated with the innate immune system. A series of novel macroacyclic Schiff base ligands and their Cu (II) complexes were synthesised via reacting dicarbonyls of varying chain lengths with S-methyl dithiocarbazate (SMDTC) and S-benzyl dithiocarbazate (SBDTC) followed by coordination with Cu (II) ions. X-ray crystal structures were obtained for compound 4, an SBDTC-diacetyl analogue, and Cu7, an SMDTC-hexanedione Cu (II) complex. Anticancer evaluation of the compounds showed that Cu1, an SMDTC-glyoxal complex, demonstrated the highest cytotoxic activity against MCF-7 and MDA-MB-231 breast cancer cells with IC50 values of 1.7 µM and 1.4 µM, respectively. There was no clear pattern observed between the effect of chain length and cytotoxic activity; however, SMDTC-derived analogues were more active than SBDTC-derived analogues against MDA-MB-231 cells. The antibacterial assay showed that K. rhizophila was the most susceptible bacteria to the compounds, followed by S. aureus. Compound 4 and the SMDTC-derived analogues 3, 5, Cu7 and Cu9 possessed the highest antibacterial activity. These active analogues were further assessed, whereby 3 possessed the highest antibacterial activity with an MIC of K. rhizophila and S. aureus. Further antibacterial studies showed that at least compounds 4 and 5 were bactericidal. Thus, Cu1 and 3 were the most promising anticancer and antibacterial agents, respectively.

This study employs a high-fidelity numerical approach to simulate fluid–structure interaction phenomena for the dynamic response of flexible hyperelastic morphing wing structures under low aerodynamic loads. The computations are performed using the open-source solids4Foam toolbox, employing a partitioned two-way fluid–structure interaction approach with a finite volume solver for both fluid and solid. The considered morphing wing is divided into a flexible and a rigid segment, with the flexible segment featuring a 60% chord length and being made of a hyperelastic rubber-like material. The concept of damping is incorporated into the solid momentum balance equation as a virtual force that opposes the velocity of the structure. Damping is employed to disperse energy from the system, hence mitigating the oscillations and reducing computational time. To understand morphing wing aerodynamics and aeroelasticity behavior, a series of tests are conducted at low and medium Reynolds numbers, specifically 2 × 10 5 and 5 × 10 5 . The results show that, for low Reynolds number, the morphing structure has a negligible impact on aerodynamic behavior. However, at higher Reynolds numbers, morphing results in improved aerodynamic efficiency at low angles of attack. Overall, the study highlights the aero-structural behavior of hyperelastic morphing wings and their potential for developing efficient and adaptive wing structures, highlighting their promise for future aircraft design innovations. There is a high demand for clean, affordable and sustainable source of energy due to the limitation in fossil fuel supplies. The algae industrial revolutions have proved to be a significant step to realize the growing need for energy and achieving the sustainable development goals (SDGs). In this review, the production and processing of algae from an industry point of view and the algae processing in Industry 4.0 as well as a paradigmatic shift from Industry 4.0 to Industry 5.0 were well-delineated. Moreover, numerous aspects in the algae industry have been discussed, including economic and environmental analysis of algae bioenergy production, customization of the algae-derived bioenergy, algae cultivation and modifications in the cultivating approach. Genetic engineering tools implemented in the algae culture for bioenergy and by-products generation was also studied, and area of focusing such as the desired algae strain and its detection through automated genetic manipulation and genetic modification. Furthermore, the impacts of the Industry 5.0 on the new market opportunities and environment aspect as well as the possibility of achieving SDGs were significantly studied.
