Promoting the education of talented and gifted students is a crucial aspect of establishing a strong society focused on scientific knowledge. This praxis article delves into the implementation of strategies in the Syrian Arab Republic to support and identify gifted students, focusing on initiatives such as the Syrian Scientific Olympiad, the National Centre for Distinguished Students, and Academic Programs for Distinguished Students. Data collection methods utilized in this study shed light on the outcomes of these initiatives and measures taken to promote gifted education in Syria. The analysis of this data provides insights into the impact of these programs on gifted students in crisis-stricken regions. The study emphasizes the significant role played by the Distinction and Creativity Agency in nurturing exceptional talents and fostering personal growth. Overall, the support provided to gifted students contributes to cognitive advancement, psychological well-being, and skill development, enhancing their overall well-being and paving the way for successful futures. The relevance of the research problem is substantiated by the fact that this procedure creates the basis for developing students’ interest in constant progress in mastering foreign languages (i.e., it increases the level of motivation to learn a foreign language), in systematizing and deepening knowledge of a foreign language. The scope of the research is a consideration and description of the methodology for holding foreign language olympiads as a motivation factor in learning. Thegoal of the research is to prove the positive impact of holding an online Foreign Language Olympiad on motivation in learning a foreign language.The research objectives: to analyze the experience of holding foreign language olympiads, to develop practical advice on the methodology for conducting such procedures. Methods used by the authors to illuminate the stated issues: comparative analysis of sources on the above-mentioned topics, experimental method, statistical mathematical method of data processing – Student's T-test. The results of the research has proved hypothesis about the positive impact of holding olympiads on motivation in learning a foreign language through appropriate scientific research methods. It has been concluded that the results can be recommended as a tool for conducting olympiads of this kind both at the university and at other levels of education.

Предметные олимпиады в отечественной и зарубежной системах образования являются проверенным временем средством поиска и отбора талантливой и одаренной молодежи. Запрос современного общества на воспитание креативных специалистов, способных нелинейно мыслить в условиях неопределенного контекста профессиональной деятельности, обусловливает обращение к средствам творческих конкурсов и олимпиад. В российской научной литературе термин «олимпиадное движение» используется в различных интерпретациях, что и обусловило проблему нашего исследования. Цель статьи – обосновать использование данного термина в современном контексте практик реализации олимпиад. Мы опираемся на принципы системного, деятельностного, аксиологического и культурологического подходов. В статье преимущественно используются теоретические методы – анализ научной литературы по теме, обобщение, категоризация, моделирование. Эмпирический опыт, полученный нами во время работы с участниками олимпиад, также послужил основой исследования, главные методы – наблюдение и беседа. В результате исследования указано, что олимпиадное движение есть педагогическая система реализации предметных олимпиад по различным дисциплинам, которая реализуется в школе и вузах, определены ее социокультурные функции и компоненты; построена модель олимпиадного движения в России. Научная новизна проявляется в уточнении термина «олимпиадное движение», вместе с построением модели данного феномена в отечественной теории и практике реализаций интеллектуальных состязаний. Теоретическая значимость заключается в приращении знания в педагогической теории наравне с уточнением термина, который используется в отечественной традиции. На практическом уровне результаты могут использоваться учеными для будущих исследований.

School subject Olympiads in Russia are among the most important projects in the field of education that receive powerful state support. During the preparation for the Olympiads, participants thoroughly study the curriculum. Meanwhile, successful students often go far beyond the minimum level of knowledge in their subject studies, thus preparing for research activities in higher education. However, the program documents of the Olympiads poorly regulate the instructional framework of the educational and methodological sets created. The purpose of this study is to identify the moral impact of the tasks of the Olympiad in English on schoolchildren, as well as to establish the moral potential of the content of the Olympiad. The author has studied numerous scientific materials of modern Russian researchers reflecting on the prospects of the moral aspects of education, taking into account the specifics of the English language subject. The author concludes that mastering sociocultural competence at the level declared in the Olympiad can impact the ethical education of a person, besides, excessive immersion in the values of English-speaking countries can lead to defying more traditional values. As part of the research, the materials of the Olympiad were studied and the focus was put on sociocultural phenomena that are required to be learned for successful participation in the Olympiad. The article speaks of the need to rethink approaches to the creation of the Olympiad competition materials, including the systematization of topics as part of the study of the socio-cultural characteristics of English-speaking countries.

This paper shows the influence of students’ participation in the Olympiad movement in internal medicine on the development of their competencies. On the basis of the Department of Hospital Therapy and Endocrinology of the Chita State Medical Academy, an intra-university Olympiad in internal medicine was held for sixth-year students. We assessed the level of effectiveness of the competence-based approach as part of the active implementation of the Olympiad movement. This paper shows that participation in the Olympiad movement allows students to master a high level of competencies, form a clearer idea of the profession, which in the future makes it possible to prevent professional incompetence.

The article analyses the contribution of Professor Jūratė Baranova to the introduction of philosophy teaching into the Lithuanian general school. There is a discussion about the need of philosophy teaching, the initiatives of Baranova and her colleagues’ mutual activities preparing textbooks and other teaching tools. The courses initiated, the philosophy education programmes for teachers and teacher re-skilling programmes, as well as students’ Philosophy Olympiads are presented. The educational projects of Baranova and her co-authors are reviewed, focusing on teaching cultural literacy at school whilst using dialogue, argumentation and multimodality. The author concludes that Baranova was one of the key contributors amongst Lithuanian professors and teachers, who made an input to the introduction and development of philosophy education at schools.

Results and perspectives of Surgical Olympiad as one of the clue elements of basic education of surgeons are discussed

Making science enjoyable inspires students to learn more. Out-of-class activities such as science fairs and Olympiads, serve as reasonable informal learning environments that demand attention. The association of students’ involvement in these activities with increased student interest in science followed by the selection of science-related careers, should motivate all in-charge stakeholders. In this work, we analysed the outcomes of the Bosnia Science Olympiad (BSO) as the first national Science Olympiad in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH), aiming the improvement of science education and bringing different ethnic groups under the umbrella of science, in a post-conflict area. The two-day endeavour held in Sarajevo includes competition in four sciencerelated categories (Environment, Engineering, Have an Idea, Web Design) and social activities. In this work, the comprehensive data, including participants’ gender, their ethnic background, cities, schools, and supervisors, over five years, was analysed. The number of participating high-school students increased from 78 to 143, of supervisors from 21 to 95, and of schools from 7 to 15, reaching a wide demographic acceptance to cover all ethnic regions in BiH. The relationship between gender and the selection of a category, shows bias of male participants towards Web Design (21%) and Engineering (40%), and of female students towards “Have an Idea” (40%) and Environment (44%) categories. The contribution of BSO choosing a science career, getting socialized without prejudices, and the improvement of students’ self-confidence, were as well addressed. Our work demonstrates a model work to successfully promote science in post-conflict settings.

Освещена конкурсно-олимпиадная деятельность как один из инструментов образовательного процесса. Дан анализ участия студентов филиала Дальневосточного федерального университета в г. Находке в конкурсах и олимпиадах за период 2019 г. Представлены формы участия в такой деятельности, показана важность проведения данных мероприятий. Использование конкурсно-олимпиадной деятельности дает возможность педагогу раскрыть творческий потенциал и интеллектуальную активность обучающегося. В целом такая деятельность повышает интерес к учебе, мотивирует к участию в научно-исследовательской деятельности, при этом формируются умения применять методы творческой деятельности в дальнейшей учебе, развивается способность к самостоятельному поиску и решению практических задач, к рациональной деятельности. Участвуя в мероприятиях такого рода (особенно когда затрагиваются различные области знаний), можно повысить успеваемость обучающегося. Также повышается коммуникативная составляющая между обучающимися и преподавателем, который одновременно может быть преподавателем-предметником и руководителем конкурса или олимпиады. Отмечено, что в последнее время в филиале увеличивается число как конкурсов и олимпиад, так и самих участников. После участия в таких мероприятиях обучающиеся начинают осознавать, что им необходимо постоянно стремиться к саморазвитию и повышению уровня своего мастерства. Выделены трудности, с которыми сталкиваются студенты при подготовке к конкурсно-олимпиадной деятельности, и показана роль руководителя (куратора, тьютора и пр.) в решении данных трудностей. При анализе конкурсно-олимпиадной деятельности выявлено, что олимпиады имеют дисциплинарный характер, а конкурсы – творческий и исследовательский характер; некоторые имеют прямое отношение к выбранной специальности.

Understanding of cancer biology is at the cornerstone of design of new and effective treatment strategies. Identification of molecular drivers of tumor growth and progression allow identify right patient for the right treatment for personalized treatment plan optimization. Breast cancer (BC) encompasses a heterogeneous collection of neoplasms with diverse morphologies, molecular phenotypes, responses to therapy, probabilities of relapse and overall survival. Molecular and histopathological classification aims to categories tumors into subgroups to inform clinical decisions, to improve long-term treatment results and maintain the quality of life of this group of patients. Germinal mutation in the BRCA1/2 (BRCAm) genes in a tumor determines the hereditary predisposition, disease manifestation, therapeutic options and clinical efficacy. Therefore, patients withBRCAmBCrepresent a special subgroup requiring personalized treatment approach.Olaparib, a poly (ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitor, is a targeted therapeutic agent that acts as inhibitor of single-strand breaks reparation, leading to their accumulation, conversion to double-strand breaks and eventually to cancer cell apoptosis. Olaparib is a first-in-class PARP-inhibitor with an outstanding antineoplastic activity known for some malignant tumors, demonstrates effectiveness and safety of therapy inBRCAmBCas well. The results of OlympiAD and LUCY trials are represented in the article. Subgroup analysis may define the patient population that would benefit from PARP inhibitors therapy.

The paper discusses a certain type of competitions based on distance interaction of a participant with simulation models of concepts from discrete mathematics and computer science. One of them is the “Construct, Test, Explore” (CTE) competition, developed by the authors, the other is the Olympiad in Discrete Mathematics and Theoretical Informatics (DM&TI). The tasks presented in this paper are generally devoted to the concept of a graph isomorphism. Most of the tasks are verified automatically.

This study aimed to select and identify Madrasah Ibtidaiyah (MI) Students' at Sorong City having mathematical Olympiad skills using Matematika Nalaria Realistik (MNR) Learning Model. Through this model, it will be analysed students' mathematical thinking skills, including mathematical comprehension skills, mathematical communication skills, and mathematical reasoning skills. The subject of this research was 33 students in 5th grade and two students in 6th grade at MI Sains Al-Hidayah Sorong City. This study applied the design research method with three phases, namely, preliminary design, teaching experiment, and retrospective analysis. Data on students' mathematical thinking skills were obtained through pre-test and post-test using descriptive analysis in each phase. Results of this study in the preliminary design involving 35 students were obtained pre-test (1) average was 9,74; (2) standard deviation was 15.72. The results of the teaching experiment phase were obtained post-test (1) average was 13,57; (2) standard deviation was 13,75; and (3) an increase of 39,32%. The results of the retrospective analysis involving 7 students were obtained pre-test (1) average was 38,28; (2) standard deviation was 23,09. In the post-test was obtained (1) average was 72,28; (2) standard deviation was 9,81; and (3) an increase of 88,77%. Thus MNR model contributed significantly to improve students' mathematical thinking skills. From 7 students participating in the final phase, three students had good skills, and four students had moderate skills.

Рассматриваются вопросы организации профессиональной подготовки студентов педагогических направлений с точки зрения использования такого ресурса, как олимпиады. Авторы обращают внимание на существенные признаки предметных и методических олимпиад, выделяемые российскими и зарубежными исследователями. Среди них можно назвать комплексность, практикоориентированность, личную значимость для обучающегося. По результатам проведенного исследования (онлайн-опрос, анализ студенческих текстов) сделаны выводы о необходимости проведения олимпиад разного вида в процессе подготовки будущих педагогов.

I chose this research topic "Study about the role of Olympic circles in the educational and sportive activity of the school", considering the children's desire for movement and dynamism, the necessity and importance of the movement in the formation of pupils' personality. The interest of children for movement in general, for exercises and games in particular, is very high at this age. Their desire is based on physiological causes, so any diminishing of the motor activity has repercussions on the functions of the body, on the growth and development of the child. In an age of technology, computer, television, sedentary, pollution, stress, unhealthy food, effort limitation, the problem of using the physical education and sport as a means of preventing and compensating, relaxing and recreating, is more and more topical. In this paper I have proposed to exemplify the special role which the Olympic Circle has in forming the student's personality. I also proposed to demonstrate the effects that exercises, games and motion activities have on the development of human personality.

NSUCRYPTO is the unique cryptographic Olympiad containing scientific mathematical problems for professionals, school and university students from any country. Its aim is to involve young researchers in solving curious and tough scientific problems of modern cryptography. From the very beginning, the concept of the Olympiad was not to focus on solving olympic tasks but on including unsolved research problems at the intersection of mathematics and cryptography. The Olympiad history starts in 2014. In 2019, it was held for the sixth time. We present the problems and their solutions of the Sixth International Olympiad in cryptography NSUCRYPTO 2019. Under consideration are the problems related to attacks on ciphers and hash functions, protocols, Boolean functions, Dickson polynomials, prime numbers, rotor machines, etc. We discuss several open problems on mathematical countermeasures to side-channel attacks, APN involutions, S-boxes, etc. The problem of finding a collision for the hash function Curl27 was partially solved during the Olympiad. The aim of the present note is to discuss Problem 2 and Problem 5 on the IMO’2019 paper. The 60th edition of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) took place in the city of Bath, United Kingdom, 11-22 July 2019, with the participation of 621 students from 112 countries. The event is the most prestigious scientific Olympiad for high school students. Problem 2 and Problem 5 are of mean difficulty on the paper. Problem 2 was solved frilly (7 points) by 98 participants, 92 students were marked with 6 points, 3 with 5 points, 6 with 4 points, 6 with 3 points, 30 with 2 points, 135 with 1 point and 251 with 0 points. The mean result of all the 621 participants in the Olympiad is 2,399. Analogously, Problem 5 was solved frilly (7 points) by 250 participants, 3 students were marked with 6 points, 7 with 5 points, 5 with 4 points, 12 with 3 points, 168 with 2 points, 20 with 1 point and 156 with 0 points. This is the problem of the 7th international Experimental Physics Olympiad “The Day of the Inductance”. A large inductance made by a general impedance converter is measured by the Maxwell-Wien bridge. The youngest students (S category) have the problem to measure the parameters of the elements in the experimental set-up. The students at middle age (category M) should balance a Wheatstone bridge with resistors only. The inductance measurement is supposed to be accomplished by the students from the upper age (L category) only. From the university students (XL category) we expect error estimation and professionally made measurement protocol. As a homework problem (Sommerfeld price) the general formula for the impedance of the general impedance converter, where the general equation for operational amplifiers is included, has to be derived. Problems and their solutions of the Fifth International Students' Olympiad in cryptography NSUCRYPTO'2018 are presented. We consider problems related to attacks on ciphers and hash functions, Boolean functions, quantum circuits, Enigma, etc. We discuss several open problems on orthogonal arrays, Sylvester matrices, and disjunct matrices. Olaparib, an oral PARP-inhibitor, has shown clinical benefit for HER2-negative advanced breast cancer patients carrying a germinal BRCA1/2 mutation. In a randomized Phase III trial, olaparib significantly prolonged progression-free survival as compared with chemotherapy of physician choice. Moreover, in the same trial, a prespecified subgroup analysis reported an overall survival benefit for patients not previously pretreated with chemotherapy for metastatic disease. This review focuses on available preclinical, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic data regarding olaparib and clinical evidence of its antitumor efficacy (both as monotherapy and in combination) and tolerability in breast cancer patients. The aim of the present note is to discuss Problem 3 on the IMO’2019 paper. The 60th edition of the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) took place in the city of Bath, United Kingdom, 11–22 July 2019, with the participation of 621 students from 112 countries. The event is the most prestigious scientific Olympiad for high school students. Problem 3 is one of the difficult ones on the paper. It was solved fully (7 points) by 28 participants, 4 students were marked with 6 points, 9 with 5 points, 5 with 4 points, 6 with 3 points, 3 with 2 points, 46 with 1 point and 520 with 0 points. Improving financial literacy for all segments of the population is a global problem which solving is aim of many international and national projects. It is not possible to find a sufficient solution without drawing attention to mathematical methods for adequate understanding and assessment of financial situation and taking optimal decisions. This is the goal of the Olympiad, established by two Bulgarian universities: the Higher School of Insurance and Finance (VUZF) in Sofia and the Economics University in Varna. Russia participated in the 2018-2019 edition of the Olympiad for the third time. This paper presents the Olympiad task solutions and gives information about the solution difficulties faced by the students. The phase III OlympiAD study (NCT02000622) showed a statistically significant progression-free survival benefit with olaparib versus chemotherapy treatment of physician's choice (TPC) in patients with a germline BRCA mutation and human epidermal growth factor receptor 2-negative metastatic breast cancer. From this study, we report the effect of olaparib on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Patients were randomised 2:1 to olaparib monotherapy (300 mg twice daily) or single-agent TPC. The primary HRQoL end-point was mean change from baseline in the two-item global health status/QoL score determined from patient-completed European Organisation for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire Core 30-item module (EORTC QLQ-C30) questionnaires and assessed using a mixed model for repeated measures. Symptoms and functioning domains, best overall response and time to deterioration of QoL were also evaluated. Overall questionnaire compliance rates were 93.2% for olaparib and 76.3% for TPC. Between-treatment global health status/QoL comparison showed a significant improvement in the olaparib arm versus the TPC arm, with mean change of 3.9 (standard deviation 1.2) versus −3.6 (2.2), a difference of 7.5 points (95% confidence interval [CI]: 2.48, 12.44; P = 0.0035). A higher proportion of patients in the olaparib arm showed a best overall response of 'improvement' in global health status/QoL (33.7% vs 13.4%). Median time to global health status/QoL deterioration was not reached in olaparib patients and was 15.3 months for TPC patients (hazard ratio: 0.44 [95% CI: 0.25, 0.77]; P = 0.004). For EORTC QLQ-C30 symptoms and functioning subscales, only nausea/vomiting symptom score was worse in the olaparib arm than in the TPC arm (across all visits compared with baseline). HRQoL was consistently improved for patients treated with olaparib, compared with chemotherapy TPC. • Quality of life (QoL) during treatment was assessed by EORTC QLQ-C30 questionnaire. • There was significant improvement in QoL score for olaparib versus chemotherapy. • More patients receiving olaparib showed an improvement in functional subscales. • Only nausea/vomiting symptom score was worse with olaparib versus chemotherapy. Breast cancer remains a leading cause of death worldwide. Our increased understanding of cellular mechanisms inherent to cancer has led to the development of new therapeutic targets. One such therapy is that of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP) inhibitors, with PARP playing a key role in the repair of single stranded DNA breaks. The development of drugs able to inhibit PARP led to their investigation in tumors that have defective DNA repair, including that of BRCA1/2-associated cancers. The PARP inhibitor Olaparib, has recently been evaluated in the Phase III OlympiAD trial, and demonstrated a significant progression-free survival advantage in patients with HER2-negative metastatic breast cancer and a germline BRCA-mutation. The aim of the present note is to propose a generalization of Problem 1 on the IMO’2018 paper. The International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) is the most prestigious scientific Olympiad for high school students. Its 59th edition took place in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, 3–14 July 2018. The problem 1 on the paper was solved fully (7 points) by 381 participants, 7 students were marked with 6 points, 7 with 5 points, 10 with 4 points, 15 with 3 points, 24 with 2 points, 54 with 1 point and 96 with 0 points. The mean result of all the 594 participants in the Olympiad from 107 countries is 4, 934, which shows that the problem is easy and has not bordered most of the contestants. Mathematical problems and their solutions from the fourth International Students' Olympiad in cryptography (NSUCRYPTO-2017) are presented. We consider problems related to attacks on ciphers and hash functions, cryptographic Boolean functions, linear branch numbers, addition chains, and error correction codes, among others. We discuss several open problems involving the algebraic structures of cryptographic functions, useful proof-of-work algorithms, the Boolean hidden shift problem, and quantum computing. The International Mathematical Olympiad is one of the respectable events and one of the most long-lived international educational and scientific competitions. It is the largest, oldest and most prestigious scientific Olympiad for high school students. The 59th edition of the event took place in Cluj-Napoca, Romania, 3 - 14 July 2018. Introduction: Scientific Olympiads and the Talented Student Office (TSO) are two strategies for the identification and training of gifted and talented medical science students. The aim of the present study is to identify students’ viewpoints about the facilities and privileges of the TSO in stimulating them to participate in the Medical Science Olympiad. Methods: This study was a cross-sectional descriptive study and all participating in the 4th and 5 National Medical Science Olympiad in Iran from 2011 to 21012 were selected using the census method. The validity of a researcher-made questionnaire was confirmed by experts. The content validity index (CVI) was 0.95. Reliability was evaluated using Cronbach’s alpha (a=0.8) and the test-retest method (ICC=0.85). Descriptive statistics including frequency, percent, mean and standard deviation were calculated by SPSS 19. Results: In total, 261 students responded to the questionnaires. About 36% of participants in this study had low or very low familiarity with regulations of the TSO. Continuing education to higher levels (master’s, Ph.D., residency) and being recruited as a faculty member were the most motivational factors for participation and the least was the permission to select more courses (up to 27 units). Conclusion: Continuing education to higher levels and recruitment as a faculty member were two important factors for participating in the National Medical Science Olympiad. Therefore, personnel in the TSO and related managers should prompt medical students to these centers by highlighting the facilities.
