Abstract

Background Darbepoetin alfa is a commonly prescribed erythropoiesis-stimulating agent (ESA) for correcting anemia in pediatric chronic kidney disease (CKD) patients. However, little information exists on its use in ESA-naïve patients. This study evaluated the efficacy and safety of darbepoetin alfa in pediatric patients initiating ESA therapy. Methods One-hundred sixteen pediatric ESA-naïve subjects (aged 1-18 years) with CKD stages 3-5D and hemoglobin (Hb) Results In both groups, mean Hb concentrations increased to [greater than or equal to]11.0 g/dl over the first 3 months of treatment and remained stable within the 10.0-12.0 g/dl target range. The median time to achieve hemoglobin [greater than or equal to]10 g/dl was slightly longer for subjects Conclusions Darbepoetin alfa can be safely administered either QW or Q2W to ESA-naïve pediatric patients with CKD-related anemia to achieve Hb targets of 10.0-12.0 g/dl., Author(s): Bradley A. Abstract

The Barkley Side Effects Questionnaire (BSEQ) may be an effective method for monitoring side effects of Ritalin in children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). ADHD is a mental disorder characterized by restlessness, easy distractibility, impatience and other types of disruptive behavior. Parents used the BSEQ to monitor 206 children with ADHD who were treated with Ritalin and with a placebo, an inactive substance, over two separate two-week periods. The incidence of certain types of side effects increased during treatment with Ritalin. These included insomnia, appetite disturbance, stomachache, headache and dizziness. Behaviors that decreased during treatment with Ritalin included staring and daydreaming, irritability, anxiety and nail biting.

Abstract

Antiglare coatings were spray coated on plasma treated glass surfaces followed by low temperature curing at 150 °C for 1 hour. The anti-glare coatings with embedded mono-dispersed latex particles can reach a pencil hardness of ≥8H, and a gloss range of 40 to 90 GU. Abstract

Pseudotumor cerebri, also called benign intracranial hypertension, is the result of cerebral edema and causes headaches and vomiting. Some investigators have described a ''slit-like'' appearance of the ventricles in cases of pseudotumor cerebri, presumably the result of swelling brain tissue encroaching on the ventricular space. However, the term slit-like is vague, and it is uncertain if the appearance of the ventricles on CT scan actually possesses any true diagnostic value. To determine the usefulness of the appearance of the ventricles in the diagnosis of pseudotumor cerebri, ventricular measurements were taken on the CT scans of 10 patients with confirmed pseudotumor cerebri and 18 control patients with headaches due to other causes. The CT scans were also examined by two physicians who were asked to identify patients with slit-like ventricles. One physician, a neurologist, identified slit-like ventricles in 3 of 10 patients and in 11 of 18 controls. The other physician, a neuroradiologist, identified slit-like ventricles in 2 of 18 controls and none of the patients. These findings are reflected by the quantitative results obtained from measurements of the ventricles. No significant differences were observed between the control subjects and the patients with pseudotumor cerebri. Researchers concluded that the appearance of the ventricles on CT scan is not a reliable diagnostic tool for pseudotumor cerebri. (Consumer Summary produced by Reliance Medical Information, Inc.)
