Lack of awareness about the interconnections between Science, Technology, and Society and students' dislike of studying science have led to many environmental and social problems. During the COVID-19 Pandemic, students experienced difficulties accessing educational resources and demanded new programs to support their academic science experiences. This study designed a science outreach program, a video project competition using a science, technology, and society (STS) learning approach and explored its effects on 13 randomly selected students (Grades 4-11). This video project employed three foundational theories--identity formation, attitudes toward science, and growth mindset--to increase students' affinities in science and assess the program's effects. Pre-and post-survey data showed that the video project using the STS approach did not have statistically meaningful effects on the participants who had high achievement in STEM areas. However, their interviews suggested that this study helped to sustain and increase their affinities and science learning even during the Pandemic by involving them in the learning process, understanding Science and Technology in our society, and making decisions for society's future.

Given the prevalence of transfer activity, education stakeholders must understand how transfer may be associated with student outcomes. Such knowledge is critical, as the COVID-19 pandemic and economic downturn have impacted college enrollment and student transfer behavior. Relying on a sample of 6510 undergraduate students from BPS:12/17 data, we conducted analyses using multiple regression to examine the relationship between student transfer direction and two student outcomes: time to degree and cumulative loan debt. Further, we analyzed whether these relationships varied by income status, using adjusted gross income (AGI) as a proxy. We found that transferring from one postsecondary institution to another may extend time to degree by one academic semester and result in increased student loan debt, with these findings varying by income level.

The future is dependent on the STEM graduate education system, emphasizing the importance of STEM graduate programs in producing highly trained expert researchers. The cognitive apprenticeship (CA) framework provides guidance to experts (i.e., faculty) on how to explicate their knowledge through the creation of learning opportunities that foster and support students in developing expertise in a particular discipline. This review examines the current landscape of research focused on the use of the CA framework in STEM graduate education. The research suggests the CA framework is a useful and effective model for supporting faculty in cultivating rich learning opportunities for STEM graduate students.

Student-teacher relationships (STRs) and socioeconomic status (SES) are two widely studied variables that have been found to predict reading achievement in the early grades. The current study extends the literature by investigating the interaction between STRs, measured using the STR Scale completed by teachers, and SES on reading achievement using a nationally representative data set. The study included approximately 8,380 first-grade students and 2,930 teachers, from 860 schools, representing a weighted sample of 3.15 million students. Results from multilevel modeling that controlled for student-, teacher-, and school-level factors found that both STRs and SES were strongly associated with student reading achievement. There was also a statistically significant interaction between close STRs and SES on reading achievement, suggesting that less conflictual STRs were associated with increased reading achievement scores for all students, but were particularly beneficial for students from low SES backgrounds. Educational implications are provided.

Although turnover rates are alarmingly high for early career and veteran teachers, turnover rates are even higher for those who identify as a teacher of color. To increase the retention of teachers, job satisfaction has become an important construct to analyze. Teacher cooperation and principal support within the school are two influential factors that directly relate to job satisfaction. Using the restricted 2011-2012 Schools and Staffing Survey, a nationally representative dataset, principal support, teacher cooperation, and their moderation effects were analyzed in relation to teacher job satisfaction using a series of multilevel models. After controlling for teacher- and school-level characteristics, principal support and teacher cooperation were statistically significant predictors of job satisfaction for all teachers. The moderation effect between the two variables of interest and race were also statistically significant. These findings emphasize the need to maintain professional communities where teachers can interact and collaborate with the support of their school leaders.

With over 91% of Americans now owning cellular devices (PEW Research Center, 2019), mobile applications (apps), like those used for foreign language learning (FLL), are becoming increasingly popular (Yu, 2019). However, it is unclear what research has been conducted to determine how effective mobile apps are at teaching foreign languages. To address this gap in the literature, the authors conducted a systematic review on existing FLL app research to determine trends in the literature and identify studies with quantifiable efficacy measures (Olsen et al., 2021). Although no current literature review to their knowledge has focused solely on FLL apps, a study completed similar work by investigating literature on mobile-assisted language learning (MALL). Building on that study's research, they conducted a systematic review using the same criteria to identify studies with quantifiable efficacy measures. However their review differed by including only research on mobile apps that focused specifically on FLL.

The importance of math achievement in the early grades has been well documented. Two variables that have independently been found to be strong predictors of math achievement are student-teacher relationships (STR) and socioeconomic status (SES). The present study investigates the interaction between STR and SES on student math achievement using the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study, a nationally representative data set. The participants included approximately 8,380 first-grade students, 2,930 teachers, and 860 schools, representing a weighted sample of approximately 3.15 million students or 90% of the population. Multilevel modeling, controlling for student-, teacher-, and school-level factors, found that both STR and SES had a strong relationship with student math achievement. There was also a statistically significant moderation effect between close STR and SES on math achievement, suggesting that close STR are beneficial for all students, but are especially beneficial for students from low SES backgrounds. Further, educational implications for research, policy, and practice are provided.

This exploratory study occurred in 10 title 1 schools located within a Midwestern state. The sample included 23 general educators and 551 students in second through fifth grade. Fifty-seven students identified as at risk for an emotional or behavioral disorder represented the targeted sample. The purpose of this study was to determine if teachers' implementation of evidence-based practices (EBP) occurred at different rates across demographic groups (i.e., race and disability risk). The results indicated that teachers used higher rates of opportunities to respond (OTR) with students not at risk compared to students at risk but used higher rates of positive specific feedback with students who were at risk compared to students not at risk. Students at risk who were Black also received statistically significantly more OTR than White at-risk students. Results of the study illuminate the need to continue examining teachers' differing use of EBP as contributors to and predictors of student outcomes and disproportionality.

Compared to other content areas, there is a dearth of research examining curriculum-based measurement of writing (CBM-W). This study conducted a conceptual replication examining the reliability, stability, and sensitivity to growth of slopes produced from CBM-W. Eighty-nine (N = 89) eighth-grade students responded to one CBM-W probe weekly for 11 weeks. Probes were scored using four different CBM-W scoring procedures: words written, words spelled correctly, correct word sequences, and correct minus incorrect word sequences. We found limited evidence for reliability and stability of these slopes. Further, the slopes were not sensitive to growth, as defined as a slope significantly greater than zero. We recommend caution when using CBM-W to progress monitor eighth-grade students. Future research should examine the same technical features with a sample of students who are low-performing or at-risk for writing failure.

The beneficial relationship of school climate with various positive student outcomes has been demonstrated in several studies, though the relationship has not been thoroughly explored with regards to a student's likelihood of being suspended from school. The relationship of school climate and out-of-school suspensions was investigated using a nationally-representative sample of 10th grade students. Regression results, which included student- and school-level factors, indicated that an authoritative school climate, characterized by an environment with fair and just rules, was associated with the reduced likelihood of suspensions, over and above other predictors. Although the relationship may be characterized as small (OR = 0.82), the positive benefits to students are likely cumulative over each year the student is in school.

The sample included 23 general educators and 551 students in second through fifth grade, with 57 students identified as at risk for an emotional or behavioral disorder. The purpose of this study was to determine (a) to what extent general education teachers used evidence-based practices--specifically, opportunities to respond, positive specific feedback, and precorrections--during classroom instruction, and (b) if those practices occurred at different rates across demographic groups (i.e., race and disability risk). The results indicated that teachers used higher rates of opportunities to respond and positive specific feedback with students not at risk compared with at-risk students. We did not find main effects of race or race-by-disability risk interaction effects. These findings support the need to continue examining teachers' differing uses of evidence-based practices.

The continual use of suspension and expulsion remains an unsettling concern for many educational stakeholders. With some guidance from the federal government, states have begun to address the issue of discipline disproportionality through policy reform that restrict the use of suspension and expulsion for certain student groups (e.g., Pre-Kindergarten through 2nd grade) and particular behaviors (e.g., dress code, tardiness, willful disobedience). This study is novel as it extends the research base by providing a preliminary assessment of restrictive discipline policies, or non-suspension and non-expulsion policies. Findings from this study found that 0 states had non-in-school-suspension policies, 20 states had non-OSS policies, and 18 states had non-expulsion policies. Further, descriptive statistics demonstrated that White, Hispanic, and Black students saw increases in academic achievement after non-out-of-school-suspension and non-expulsion policies were implemented with Black students experiencing lower rates of OSS but higher expulsions and Hispanic students experiencing both higher rates of OSS and expulsions compared to White students. A systematic review examining the efficacy of commercially available foreign language-learning apps (FLL) was completed. A database search of ERIC, PsychINFO, and LearnTechLib produced 1,786 journal articles. After applying specific inclusion and exclusion criteria based on Burston's seminal study (2015) requiring a minimum number of 10 participants, quantitative learning outcome data and rigorous research design, eight studies remained. These studies were categorized in terms of the app studied, year of publication, language taught, age group of participants, setting, length of study, and device(s) used. Descriptive statistics demonstrate there is a dearth of studies examining app efficacy, that English was the most commonly taught language, and that vocabulary was the most commonly tested area. Although commercial apps were found to successfully support FLL, the included studies' methods varied in ways that made direct comparison difficult. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The causes and effects of the integration of the NBA have received far less attention than the integration of other sports. We use survival analysis to examine whether integration was led by successful franchises or unsuccessful teams. We then go on to examine the contributions of Black players in the 1950s and early 1960s. Specifically, we ask whether teams that relied more heavily on Black players were more successful, as was the case in baseball.
