This article discusses the use of green nudges—behavioral interventions aimed at reducing negative externalities—as an environmental policy instrument. We present a new framework for classifying nudges according to how they affect behavior. Pure nudges change the choice environment to guide behavior unobtrusively. Moral nudges trigger a psychological reaction to encourage behavior change. Our review of empirical studies reveals that green nudges, pure or moral, can have a significant impact on behavior and the environment but that the effects are highly context dependent. On the basis of both our review and basic welfare economics models, we discuss key factors for policy makers to consider when choosing between implementing a green nudge and implementing conventional policy instruments.

Criticisms of nudging suggest that nudges infringe on decision makers’ autonomy. Yet, little empirical research has explored whether people who are subjected to nudges agree. In three between-group experiments (N = 2083), we subject participants to contrasting choice architectures and measure experiences of autonomy, choice-satisfaction, perceived threat to freedom of choice, and objection to the choice architecture. Participants who received a prosocial opt-out default nudge made more prosocial choices but did not report lower autonomy or choice satisfaction than participants in opt-in default or active-choice conditions. This was the case even when the presence of the nudge was disclosed, and when monetary choice stakes were introduced. With monetary choice stakes, participants perceived the threat to freedom of choice as slightly higher in the nudge condition than in the other conditions, but objection to the choice architecture did not differ between the conditions. Taken together, our results suggest that default nudges are less manipulative and autonomy-infringing than sometimes feared. We recommend that policymakers include measures of choice experiences when testing out new interventions.

Ultrafast transient absorption spectra were recorded for [Mn(terpy)X3], where X = Cl, F, and N3, to explore photoinduced switching from axial to equatorial Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion. Strong oscillations were observed in the transients, corresponding to a wavepacket on the excited-state potential energy surface with oscillation frequency around 115 cm−1 for all three complexes. Multireference quantum chemistry calculations indicate that the reaction coordinate is a pincer-like motion of the terpyridine ligand arising from bond length changes in the excited state due to the JT switch. We observed long dephasing times of the wavepacket, with times of 620 fs for [Mn(terpy)Cl3], 450 fs for [Mn(terpy)F3], and 370 fs for [Mn(terpy)(N3)3]. The dephasing time of these coherences decreases with an increasing number of vibrational modes at lower energy than the mode dominating the reaction coordinate, suggesting they act as an effective bath to dissipate the excess energy obtained from photoexcitation.

New magnetic materials and methods for controlling them are needed to improve data storage technologies. Recent progress has enabled optical detection and manipulation of spins in molecule-based magnets on the femtosecond timescale, which is promising for both increasing the read/write speed but also the data storage density. Experimental developments in femtosecond X-ray free-electron lasers (XFELs) and magneto-optics, in combination with theory advances, have opened up several new avenues to investigate molecule-based magnets. This review discusses the literature concerning ultrafast photoinduced dynamics in Prussian blue analogues (PBAs), which are molecule-based magnets. In PBAs spin–flips and lattice distortions can happen on the 100 fs timescale, which in some analogues lead to photoinduced changes in the long-range magnetic order. The literature and themes covered in this review are of relevance for ultrafast optical control of new multifunctional materials.

The main purpose of this paper is to examine perspectives of successful and effective leadership as well as successful and effective schools in an effort to uncover the governance interventions which produce one or the other characterization. This examination is undertaken through the utilization of two guiding frameworks: the Pashiardis-Brauckmann Holistic Leadership Framework and the Bredeson and Johansson framework for principals’ functions. Additionally, views on success and effectiveness from around the world are utilized. Following this, in this theoretically focused paper we make the argument that successful schools institutionalize the right processes in order to achieve and sustain the desired results and thus become effective. Then, in an effort to bring context into the equation, we discuss what the context is for each education system and student and if schools can make up for the deficiencies of a student’s individual context. We end our discussion by stressing the fact that researchers, through their work, can inspire teachers and principals with their (often) simple descriptions of complex school improvement processes. These descriptions have a profound effect on the applied pedagogical work in schools, which is sometimes more influential than national policy decisions and educational reforms.

PurposeIn the rational model of the democratic governing chain, intervening spaces at all levels are neglected in relation to the policy process. An intervening space is a group of persons with the power and responsibility to interpret policy at their level in an organization. The research question is as follows: How are democratic policy ideas visible in the intervening spaces of a governing chain in public schools?Design/methodology/approachThe study is based on two municipalities representing the 25 most populated cities in Sweden. The data are based on interviews with 66 informants with leadership roles on the district level and two schools in each municipality.FindingsLeadership is obviously more than making decisions. It is also about facilitating and creating trust, engagement, motivation and willingness to take responsibility. In this process, intervening spaces are central. They exist at all levels from the national ministry to the classroom. The empirical examples show the importance and challenges in how different leadership roles, relationships and interaction transform policy intentions to practice on the local level.Originality/valueThe authors contribute by highlighting the parallel interpretation processes that take place at various leadership levels locally. There are possibilities and challenges in aligning the intervening spaces into a rational governing chain. The findings indicate that intervening spaces and policy drift is vital to support, control and use professional competence in the process to transfer political ideas to classroom practice.

We describe the development of a broadband magneto-optical spectrometer with femtosecond temporal resolution. The absorption spectrometer is based on a white-light supercontinuum (ca. 320 - 750 nm) using shot-to-shot temporal and spectral referencing at 1 kHz. Static and transient absorption spectra using circularly polarised light are collected in a magnetic field. The difference spectra with respect to the external field direction give the static and transient magneto-optical Faraday rotation (magnetic optical rotary dispersion) and ellipticity (magnetic circular dichroism) spectra. An achromatic quarter-wave plate is used and the impact of the deviation from ideal retardance on the spectra is discussed. Results from solution-based and thin-film samples are used to demonstrate the performance and wide applicability of the instrument. The sensitivities for the static and time-resolved data were found to be 5 and 0.4 mdeg, respectively.
