Abstract

Synoptic full-disk solar telescope are fundamental instruments for present and future Solar Physics and Space Weather. They are typically used to study and monitor the solar activity by using high temporal cadence observations at different wavelength. The TSST (Tor vergata Synoptic Solar Telescope) is a new synoptic telescope composed of two spectral channels: an H$\alpha$ (656.3 nm) telescope and a Magneto Optical Filter (MOF)-based telescope in the Potassium (KI D1) absorption spectral line at 769.9 nm. H$\alpha$ observations are fundamental for the identification of flaring regions. The MOF-based telescope will produce line of sight magnetograms and dopplergrams of the solar photosphere, which are respectively used to study the magnetic field's geometry in active regions and dynamics of the solar atmosphere. Abstract

Second cheese whey (SCW) or “scotta” in Italian, is a side-stream from the manufacturing of “Ricotta” cheese, obtained after thermal coagulation of whey proteins residue in the cheese whey. Galdieria sulphuraria is a thermophilic red algae well known for its metabolic capabilities to grow on wastewater and other saline effluents. In this work, the valorisation of SCW as nutrient source for the growth of G. sulphuraria has been investigated using different concentrations of SCW. The biochemical and fatty acids composition of the biomass obtained has been evaluated too. Small differences have been observed in terms of biomass obtained after 12 days of cultivation between the SCW media and the relative control with the same amount of reducing sugars. The fatty acids composition of G. sulphuraria grown in SCW showed a higher content of polyunsaturated fatty acids compared to the control. The biomass productivity using SCW media has also been optimized through response surface methodologies with supplementation of nitrogen source obtaining a biomass dry weight higher than 10 g L−1.

10. Reflectance confocal microscopy terminology glossary for melanocytic skin lesions: A systematic review

Abstract

Background: There is lack of uniformity in the reflectance confocal microscopy (RCM) terminology for melanocytic lesions. Objective: To review published RCM terms for melanocytic lesions and identify redundant, synonymous terms. Methods: A systematic review of original research articles adhering to Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) guidelines was conducted until August 15, 2018. Two investigators gathered all published RCM terms used to describe melanoma and melanocytic nevi. Synonymous terms were grouped based on similarity in definition and in histopathologic correlation. Results: Out of 156 full-text screened articles, 59 studies met the inclusion criteria. We identified 209 terms; 191 (91.4%) corresponding to high-magnification/cellular-level terms and 18 (8.6%) corresponding to low-magnification/architectural patterns terms. The overall average use frequency of RCM terms was 3.1 times (range, 1-31). By grouping of individual RCM terms based on likely synonymous definitions and by eliminating terms lacking clear definition, the total number of RCM terms could be potentially reduced from 209 to 40 terms (80.8% reduction). Limitations: Non-English and non–peer-reviewed articles were excluded. Conclusions: This systematic review of published RCM terms identified significant terminology redundancy. It provides the basis for subsequent terminology consensus on melanocytic neoplasms. © 2020 American Academy of Dermatology, Inc.

Abstract

Background: There is no internationally vetted set of anatomic terms to describe human surface anatomy. Objective: To establish expert consensus on a standardized set of terms that describe clinically relevant human surface anatomy. Methods: We conducted a Delphi consensus on surface anatomy terminology between July 2017 and July 2019. The initial survey included 385 anatomic terms, organized in seven levels of hierarchy. Abstract

In this study, the effect of lauric acid and wheat gluten on physico-chemical and mechanical properties of zein-based edible films was studied. Edible films based on thermoplastic zein containing different amount of lauric acid and wheat gluten were obtained through two step procedures: melt mixing and subsequent compression molding. Results highlighted that the addition of lauric acid brought about an increase in tensile modulus and maximum stress and a decrease of water vapor permeability of zein-based edible films. This behavior can be attributed to the increase of the hydrophobic character of the produced films. On the other hand, the addition of wheat gluten induced a reduction of water vapor permeability without affecting their mechanical properties. The best compromise between barrier and mechanical properties was observed for the thermoplastic zein-based films containing 11% and 15% of lauric acid and wheat gluten, respectively.

Abstract

Plastics find many uses in the modern-day life. Many of these polymers are derived from petroleum, a not replenish-able resource. To alleviate this problem, governments in many countries have established laws to encourage the use of recycled and/or bio-based "green" products. In this paper, the combustion behavior of a thermoplastic protein zein (TPZ) obtained from a renewable-resource and the fire retardant effect of either lignin (AL) or ammonium polyphosphate (APP) and of their combination on TPZ combustion is studied. Combustion behavior is tested on samples in vertical burning upon small flame ignition or in horizontal configuration on exposure to radiant heat source and pilot flame ignition. Addition of lignin improves the fire retardant behavior of TPZ in vertical self-sustained burning scenario and APP that in pool forced combustion, so their combination is tested to target a material with satisfactory fire retardant behavior in both scenarios.

Bakelite RPCs, assembled according to the ARGO design, have been operated in the high altitude Laboratory of YBJ using dedicated electronics to pick-up the streamer signal. Here we report on the results concerning absorbed current, single counting rate, efficiency and time resolution. However, in the last years the emission of pollutants from photovoltaic life cycles has attracted the attention of scientists. The principal concern regards the presence of heavy metals as Cd in thin film modules or Pb and Cr in crystalline modules. At the end of life of photovoltaic panels, these dangerous substances could be released in the environment, if special requirements for their disposal are not adopted. However, there is still a lack of experimental data about the release of substances in the environment from photovoltaic panels. As part of a study funded by the Italian national consortium for the waste collection and recycling (COBAT), the present work was aimed to analyze experimentally the potential release into the environment of hazardous elements, particularly metals, from photovoltaic waste. For this purpose, leaching and ecotoxicology tests were performed on PV samples produced in the last 30 years.

Abstract

Since many years, the complex phenomena occurring on the Sun have beencontinuously monitored by different and complementary ground based instruments man-agedby groups of the Italian Astrophysics Community. Recently some of these instrumentshave started to operate in a coordinated scheme, the Italian Network for Ground-BasedObservations of Sun-Earth Phenomena. In this paper, we describe the characteristics of thenodes belonging to the Network, called SINERGIES, the scientific objectives, the facilitiesand the data storage system of the Network itself. Due to its capabilities, the Network al-lowsthe Italian Solar Terrestrial Physics Community to monitor solar activity and its effecton the Earth.
