The effect of Ce(III) on the top surface and galvanic corrosion of ZnFe coating electrodeposited on steel was investigated. The inhibition performance was assessed by Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy on the surface of the Zn and ZnFe electrodeposited coatings. The ZnFe/steel galvanic coupling was investigated based on a model coupling studied from the polarization curves while Scanning Vibrating Electrode Technique gave information on a cut-edge configuration. Cerium increases the corrosion of zinc in a galvanic coupling with steel. Phenol‐paraphenylenediamine (P‐pPDA) benzoxazines exhibit excellent barrier properties, adequate to protect aluminum alloys from corrosion, and constitute interesting candidates to replace chromate‐containing coatings in the aeronautical industry. For the successful application of P‐pPDA coatings, it is necessary to decrease the curing temperature to avoid the delamination of the coating while preserving the mechanical properties of the alloy, as well as the barrier properties of the coating. However, decreasing the curing temperature leads to less polymerized films, the extent of which requires a quantitative assessment. While the conversion rate of the polymerization reaction is commonly evaluated for bulk samples using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), a tool for its evaluation in thin films is missing. Therefore, a new approach was developed for that matter using time‐of‐flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (ToF‐SIMS). The relation between the SIMS data integrated from inside thin films and the DSC results obtained on bulk samples with the same curing cycle allowed to calibrate the SIMS data. With this preliminary calibration of the technique, the polymerization of PpPDA coatings can be locally determined, at the surface and along the depth of the coating, using dual‐beam depth profiling with large argon cluster beam sputtering.

L’objectif de cette thèse consiste en une étude fondamentale de différentes approches pour la modification de surfaces d’alliages d’aluminium. Elle s’inscrit dans le cadre du projet FLYCOAT, subventionné par la région Wallonne. Ce dernier avait pour objectif le développement d’alternatives au couplage classique d’un procédé d’anodisation utilisant des bains de Cr (VI) aux résines époxy pour la protection des alliages d’aluminium contre la corrosion. Dans un premier temps, la synthèse par plasma atmosphérique dans un réacteur de type décharge à barrière diélectrique (DBD) de films riches en groupements carboxyliques à partir de 8 précurseurs organiques est étudiée. Une attention particulière est portée à la compréhension fondamentale des mécanismes de polymérisation de ces précurseurs. L’influence significative de minimes variations de la structure chimique du précurseur est étudiée. Concrètement, nous démontrons l’impact de la présence et de la position de doubles liaisons ou encore le ratio C/O dans le monomère injecté sur le mécanisme de synthèse des couches déposées. Pour ce faire, une méthodologie combinant des analyses de la phase plasma et des films déposés est proposée. Les propriétés électriques de la DBD d’argon sont évaluées par oscilloscope avant et durant l’injection des différents précurseurs. La quantité d’énergie transférée de la décharge vers le précurseur est évaluée par spectroscopie d’émission optique et corrélée à sa structure. Une fragmentation réduite est mise en évidence par spectrométrie de masse pour les monomères contenant une double liaison. Ces analyses de la phase plasma sont alors corrélées avec les propriétés physiques et chimiques des films synthétisés. Les compositions chimiques de surface et de la matrice des couches minces sont étudiées par spectroscopie à photoélectrons X (XPS) et infrarouge. Uracil was used as complexing agent to developp cyanide-free processes for silver deposition on copper and nickel substrates. We have highlighted that the molar ratio Ur/Ag+ between uracil and silver ions concentrations and the pH are crucial in the formulation of a stable and efficient bath and were found to be equal to 4 and 13.7 respectively. Silver was deposited in a single step on copper according to a three-dimensional nucleation mechanism while silver plating of nickel substrates was found to require an additionnal silver strike step. The initial pH effect on the dissolution of zinc-magnesium coated steel is investigated with or without chlorides for long immersion periods. The coating is characterized by TEM, SEM and GDOES. With immersion time, the alloy electrochemical behaviour is investigated by EIS and the corrosion products are analysed using ICP-OES and XPS. In alkaline medium, the formation of zincite is inhibited and chlorides do not hinder a passive layer formation. In chloride electrolyte at natural pH, chlorides are not detected on the metal surface. The aim of the present work is to study the effect of surface mild steel preparation on its electrochemical behaviour in neutral chloride solution without and with an inorganic inhibitor. Various surface preparations are examined: alkaline degreasing, acid pickling and polishing. Open circuit potential measurements and potentiodynamic polarisations are used as corrosion monitoring techniques. The effect of chloride concentration is evaluated. The ability of inorganic inhibitors (Na2MoO4, NaNO2, Na 2WO4 and Na2VO3) to stabilise the passive state of steel in chloride containing solutions is assessed by electrochemical and surface analysis techniques.
