We measure the gas-phase abundances of the elements He, N, O, Ne, S, Ar, and Fe in the Lyman-continuum emitting region of the Sunburst Arc, a highly magnified galaxy at redshift $z=2.37$. We detect the temperature-sensitive auroral lines [SII]$\lambda\lambda4069,4076$, [OII]$\lambda\lambda7320,7330$, [SIII]$\lambda6312$, [OIII]$\lambda4363$, and [NeIII]$\lambda3343$ in a stacked spectrum of 5 multiple images of the Lyman-continuum emitter (LCE), from which we directly measure the electron temperature in the low, intermediate, and high ionization zones. We also detect the density-sensitive doublets of [OII]$\lambda\lambda3727,3729$, [SII]$\lambda\lambda6717,6731$, and [ArIV]$\lambda\lambda4713,4741$, which constrain the density in both the low- and high-ionization gas. With these temperature and density measurements, we measure gas-phase abundances with similar rigor as studies of local galaxies. We measure a gas-phase metallicity for the LCE of $12+\log(\textrm{O}/\textrm{H}) = 7.97 \pm 0.05$, and find an enhanced nitrogen abundance $\log(\textrm{N}/\textrm{O}) = -0.65^{+0.16}_{-0.25}$. This nitrogen abundance is consistent with enrichment from a population of Wolf-Rayet stars, additional signatures of which are reported in a companion paper. Abundances of sulfur, argon, neon, and iron are consistent with local low-metallicity HII regions and low-redshift galaxies. This study represents the most complete chemical abundance analysis of a galaxy at Cosmic Noon to date, which enables direct comparisons between local HII regions and those in the distant universe., Comment: 15 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables. We present the first Chandra X-ray observations of H72.97-69.39, a highly-embedded, potential super-star cluster (SSC) in its infancy located in the star-forming complex N79 of the Large Magellanic Cloud. We detect particularly hard, diffuse X-ray emission that is coincident with the young stellar object (YSO) clusters identified with JWST, and the hot gas fills cavities in the dense gas mapped by ALMA. The X-ray spectra are best fit with either a thermal plasma or power-law model, and assuming the former, we show that the X-ray luminosity of L_X = (1.5 +- 0.3)e34 erg/s is a factor of ~20 below the expectation for a fully-confined wind bubble. Our results suggest that stellar wind feedback produces diffuse hot gas in the earliest stages of massive star cluster formation and that wind energy can be lost quickly via either turbulent mixing followed by radiative cooling or by physical leakage., Comment: 10 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables, submitted to ApJ

Using integrated spectra for two gravitationally lensed galaxies from the JWST TEMPLATES Early Release Science program, we analyze faint auroral lines, which provide direct measurements of the gas-phase chemical abundance. For the brighter galaxy, SGAS1723$+$34 ($z = 1.3293$), we detect the [OIII]$\lambda4363$, [SIII]$\lambda6312$, and [OII]$\lambda\lambda$7320,7330 auroral emission lines, and set an upper limit for the [NII]$\lambda5755$ line. For the second galaxy, SGAS1226$+$21 ($z = 2.925$), we do not detect any auroral lines, and report upper limits. With these measurements and upper limits, we constrain the electron temperatures in different ionization zones within both of these galaxies. For SGAS1723$+$34, where auroral lines are detected, we calculate direct oxygen and nitrogen abundances, finding an N/O ratio consistent with observations of nearby ($z\sim 0$) galaxies. We describe a custom outlier rejection algorithm for JWST/NIRSpec integral field spectroscopy. This method uses a layered sigma clipping approach that adapts clipping thresholds based upon the spatial profile of the science target. We find that this algorithm produces a robust outlier rejection while simultaneously preserving the signal of the science target. Originally developed as a response to unsatisfactory initial performance of the jwst pipeline outlier detection step, this method works either as a standalone solution, or as a supplement to the current pipeline software. Comparing leftover (i.e., not flagged) artifacts with the current pipeline's outlier detection step, we find that our method results in one fifth as many residual artifacts as the jwst pipeline. However, we find a combination of both methods removes nearly all artifacts -- an approach that takes advantage of both our algorithm's robust outlier rejection and the pipeline's use of individual dithers. This combined approach is what the TEMPLATES Early Release Science team has converged upon for our NIRSpec observations. This paper gives an overview of TEMPLATES, a JWST Early Release Science program that targeted four extremely bright, gravitationally lensed galaxies: two extremely dusty, two with low attenuation, as templates for galaxy evolution studies with JWST. TEMPLATES obtains a common set of spectral diagnostics for these 1.3 < z < 4.2 galaxies, in particular H alpha, Paschen alpha, and the rest-frame optical and near-infrared continua. In addition, two of the four targets have JWST coverage of [O III] 5007 Angstrom and H beta; the other two targets have have JWST coverage of PAH 3.3 micron and complementary ALMA data covering the [C II] 158 micron emission line. The science goals of TEMPLATES are to demonstrate attenuation-robust diagnostics of star formation, map the distribution of star formation, compare the young and old stellar populations, and measure the physical conditions of star formation and their spatial variation across the galaxies. In addition, TEMPLATES has technical goals to establish best practices for the Integral Field Units (IFU) within the NIRSpec and MIRI instruments, both in terms of observing strategy and in terms of data reduction. We present the first spatially resolved maps of gas-phase metallicity for two dust-obscured star-forming galaxies (DSFGs) at $z\sim$ 4, from the JWST TEMPLATES Early Release Science program, derived from NIRSpec integral field unit spectroscopy of the H$\alpha$ and [NII] emission lines. Empirical optical line calibrations are used to determine that the sources are globally enriched to near-solar levels. While one source shows elevated [NII]/H$\alpha$ ratios and broad H$\alpha$ emission consistent with the presence of an AGN in a $\gtrsim$1kpc region, we argue that both systems have already undergone significant metal enrichment as a result of their extremely high star formation rates. Utilizing ALMA rest-frame 380$\mu$m continuum and [CI]($^3$P$_2$-$^3$P$_1$) line maps we compare the spatial variation of the metallicity and gas-to-dust ratio in the two galaxies, finding the two properties to be anticorrelated on highly resolved spatial scales, consistent with various literature studies of $z\sim$ 0 galaxies. Dust grains absorb half of the radiation emitted by stars throughout the history of the universe, re-emitting this energy at infrared wavelengths. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are large organic molecules that trace millimeter-size dust grains and regulate the cooling of the interstellar gas within galaxies. Observations of PAH features in very distant galaxies have been difficult due to the limited sensitivity and wavelength coverage of previous infrared telescopes. Here we present JWST observations that detect the 3.3um PAH feature in a galaxy observed less than 1.5 billion years after the Big Bang. The high equivalent width of the PAH feature indicates that star formation, rather than black hole accretion, dominates the infrared emission throughout the galaxy. The light from PAH molecules, large dust grains, and stars and hot dust are spatially distinct from one another, leading to order-of-magnitude variations in the PAH equivalent width and the ratio of PAH to total infrared luminosity across the galaxy. The spatial variations we observe suggest either a physical offset between the PAHs and large dust grains or wide variations in the local ultraviolet radiation field. Spectroscopic studies of extreme-ionization galaxies (EIGs) are critical to our understanding of exotic systems throughout cosmic time. These EIGs exhibit spectral features requiring >54.42 eV photons: the energy needed to fully ionize helium into He2+ and emit He II recombination lines. They are likely key contributors to reionization, and they can also probe exotic stellar populations or accretion onto massive black holes. To facilitate the use of EIGs as probes of high ionization, we focus on ratios constructed from strong rest-frame UV/optical emission lines, specifically [O III] 5008, H-beta, [Ne III] 3870, [O II] 3727,3729, and [Ne V] 3427. These lines probe the relative intensity at energies of 35.12, 13.62, 40.96, 13.62 eV, and 97.12, respectively, covering a wider range of ionization than traced by other common rest-frame UV/optical techniques. We use ratios of these lines ([Ne V]/[Ne III] = Ne53 and [Ne III]/[O II]), which are closely separated in wavelength, and mitigates effects of dust attenuation and uncertainties in flux calibration. We make predictions from photoionization models constructed from Cloudy that use a broad range of stellar populations and black hole accretion models to explore the sensitivity of these line ratios to changes in the ionizing spectrum. We compare our models to observations from the Hubble Space Telescope and James Webb Space Telescope of galaxies with strong high-ionization emission lines at z ~ 0, z ~ 2, and z ~ 7. We show that the Ne53 ratio can separate galaxies with ionization from 'normal' stellar populations from those with AGN and even 'exotic' Population III models. We introduce new selection methods to identify galaxies with photoionization driven by Population III stars or intermediate-mass black hole accretion disks that could be identified in upcoming high-redshift spectroscopic surveys., Comment: 16 pages, 5 figures, 1 table. WR 20a is the most massive close-in binary known in our Galaxy. It is composed of two $\approx$80 M$_\odot$ Wolf-Rayet stars with a short period of $\approx$3.7 days in the open cluster Westerlund 2. As such, WR 20a presents us with a unique laboratory for studying the currently uncertain physics of binary evolution and compact object formation as well as for studying the wind collision region in an massive eclipsing binary system. We use deep Chandra observations of WR 20a to study the time variability of the wind collision region between the two Wolf-Rayet stars and are able to produce an X-ray light curve covering $\approx$2/3 of its orbital period. We find that the X-ray light curve is asymmetric because the flux of one peak is 2.5$\sigma$ larger than the flux of the other peak. This asymmetry could be caused by asymmetric mass-loss from the two stars or by the lopsidedness of the wind collision region due to the unusually fast rotation of the system. The X-ray light curve is also shifted in phase space when compared to the optical light curves measured by TESS and ASAS-SN. Additionally, we explore the ultimate fate of this system by modeling the resultant binary black hole merger expected at the end of the two stars' lives. We conclude that this system will evolve to be a representative of the sub-population of LIGO progenitors of fast-spinning binary black hole merger events., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, submitted to ApJ

We analyze a sample of 25 [Ne V] $\lambda$3426 emission-line galaxies at $1.4

Observations of high-redshift galaxies ($z >$ 5) have shown that these galaxies have extreme emission lines with equivalent widths much larger than their local star-forming counterparts. Extreme emission line galaxies (EELGs) in the nearby universe are likely analogues to galaxies during the Epoch of Reionization and provide nearby laboratories to understand the physical processes important to the early universe. We use HST/COS and LBT/MODS spectra to study two nearby EELGs, J104457 and J141851. The FUV spectra indicate that these two galaxies contain stellar populations with ages $< \sim$ 10 Myr and metallicities $\leq$ 0.15 Z$_\odot$. We use photoionization modeling to compare emission lines from models of single-age bursts of star-formation to observed emission lines and find that the single-age bursts do not reproduce high-ionization lines including [O III] or very-high ionization lines like He II or [O IV]. Photoionization modeling using the stellar populations fit from the UV continuum similarly are not capable of reproducing the emission lines from the very-high ionization zone. We add a blackbody to the stellar populations fit from the UV continuum to model the necessary high-energy photons to reproduce the very-high ionization lines of He II and [O IV]. We find that we need a blackbody of 80,000 K and $\sim$60-70% of the luminosity from the young stellar population to reproduce the very-high ionization lines while simultaneously reproducing the low- intermediate-, and high-ionization emission lines. Our self-consistent model of the ionizing spectra of two nearby EELGs indicates the presence of a previously unaccounted-for source of hard ionizing photons in reionization analogues., Comment: 24 pages, 8 figures, submitted to ApJ

Stellar population models produce radiation fields that ionize oxygen up to O+2, defining the limit of standard HII region models (<54.9 eV). Yet, some extreme emission line galaxies, or EELGs, have surprisingly strong emission originating from much higher ionization potentials. We present UV-HST/COS and optical-LBT/MODS spectra of two nearby EELGs that have very-high-ionization emission lines (e.g., HeII 1640,4686 CIV 1548,1550, [FeV] 4227, [ArIV] 4711,4740). We define a 4-zone ionization model that is augmented by a very-high-ionization zone, as characterized by He+2 (>54.4 eV). The 4-zone model has little to no effect on the measured total nebular abundances, but does change the interpretation of other EELG properties: we measure steeper central ionization gradients, higher volume-averaged ionization parameters, and higher central T_e, n_e, and logU values. Traditional 3-zone estimates of the ionization parameter can under-estimate the average log U by up to 0.5 dex. Additionally, we find a model-independent dichotomy in the abundance patterns, where the alpha/H-abundances are consistent but N/H, C/H, and Fe/H are relatively deficient, suggesting these EELGs are alpha/Fe-enriched by >3 times. However, there still is a high-energy ionizing photon production problem (HEIP^3). Even for such alpha/Fe-enrichment and very-high log Us, photoionization models cannot reproduce the very-high-ionization emission lines observed in EELGs., Comment: 32 pages, 14 figures, resubmitted to ApJ

Stellar feedback is needed to produce realistic giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and galaxies in simulations, but due to limited numerical resolution, feedback must be implemented using subgrid models. Observational work is an important means to test and anchor these models, but limited studies have assessed the relative dynamical role of multiple feedback modes, particularly at the earliest stages of expansion when HII regions are still deeply embedded. In this paper, we use multiwavelength (radio, infrared, and X-ray) data to measure the pressures associated with direct radiation ($P_{\rm dir}$), dust-processed radiation ($P_{\rm IR}$), photoionization heating ($P_{\rm HII}$), and shock-heating from stellar winds ($P_{\rm X}$) in a sample of 106 young, resolved HII regions with radii $\lesssim$0.5 pc to determine how stellar feedback drives their expansion. We find that the $P_{\rm IR}$ dominates in 84% of the regions and that the median $P_{\rm dir}$ and $P_{\rm HII}$ are smaller than the median $P_{\rm IR}$ by factors of $\approx 6$ and $\approx 9$, respectively. Based on the radial dependences of the pressure terms, we show that HII regions transition from $P_{\rm IR}$-dominated to $P_{\rm HII}$-dominated at radii of $\sim$3 pc. We find a median trapping factor of $f_{\rm trap} \sim$ 8 without any radial dependence for the sample, suggesting this value can be adopted in sub-grid feedback models. Moreover, we show that the total pressure is greater than the gravitational pressure in the majority of our sample, indicating that the feedback is sufficient to expel gas from the regions., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, ApJ, in press

We utilize deep Chandra X-ray Observatory imaging and spectra of M82, the prototype of a starbursting galaxy with a multiphase wind, to map the hot plasma properties along the minor axis of the galaxy. We extract spectra from 11 regions up to 2.5 kpc from the starbursting midplane and model the data as a multi-temperature, optically thin thermal plasma with contributions from a non-thermal (power-law) component and from charge exchange (CX). We examine the gradients in best-fit parameters, including the intrinsic column density, plasma temperature, metal abundances, and number density of the hot gas as a function of distance from the M82 nucleus. We find that the temperatures and number densities of the warm-hot and hot plasma peak at the starbursting ridge and decreases along the minor axis. The temperature and density profiles are inconsistent with spherical adiabatic expansion of a super-heated wind and suggest mass loading and mixing of the hot phase with colder material. Non-thermal emission is detected in all of the regions considered, and CX comprises 8-25% of the total absorption-corrected, broad-band (0.5-7 keV) X-ray flux. We show that the abundances of O, Ne, Mg, and Fe are roughly constant across the regions considered, while Si and S peak within 500 pc of the central starburst. These findings support a direct connection between the M82 superwind and the warm-hot, metal-rich circumgalactic medium (CGM)., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, ApJ in press

In the last few years, prominent high-ionization nebular emission lines (i.e., OIII], CIII], CIV, HeII) have been observed in the deep UV spectra of z~5-7 galaxies, indicating that extreme radiation fields characterize reionization-era systems. These lines have been linked to the leakage of Lyman continuum photons both theoretically and observationally. Consequently, high-ionization UV emission lines present our best probe to detect and characterize the most distant galaxies that we will observe in the coming years, and are key to understanding the sources of reionization, yet the physics governing their production is poorly understood. Here we present recent high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope spectra of two nearby extreme UV emission-line galaxies, J104457 and J141851. We report the first observations of intense nebular HeII and double-peaked, resonantly-scattered CIV emission, a combination that suggests these galaxies both produce and transmit a significant number of very high-energy ionizing photons (E>47.89 eV) through relatively low column densities of high-ionization gas. This suggests that, in addition to photons at the H-ionizing edge, the very hard ionizing photons that escape from these galaxies may provide a secondary source of ionization that is currently unconstrained observationally. Simultaneous radiative transfer models of LyA and CIV are needed to understand how ionizing radiation is transmitted through both low- and high-ionization gas. Future rest-frame FUV observations of galaxies within the epoch of reionization using the JWST or ELTs will allow us to constrain the escape of helium-ionizing photons and provide an estimate for their contribution to the reionization budget., Comment: 8 pages, 3 figures, accepted to ApJL, comments welcome

We identify 709 arc-shaped mid-infrared nebula in 24 micron Spitzer Space Telescope or 22 micron Wide Field Infrared Explorer surveys of the Galactic Plane as probable dusty interstellar bowshocks powered by early-type stars. About 20% are visible at 8 microns or shorter mid-infrared wavelengths as well. The vast majority (660) have no previous identification in the literature. These extended infrared sources are strongly concentrated near Galactic mid-Plane with an angular scale height of ~0.6 degrees. All host a symmetrically placed star implicated as the source of a stellar wind sweeping up interstellar material. These are candidate "runaway" stars potentially having high velocities in the reference frame of the local medium. Among the 286 objects with measured proper motions, we find an unambiguous excess having velocity vectors aligned with the infrared morphology --- kinematic evidence that many of these are "runaway" stars with large peculiar motions responsible for the bowshock signature. We discuss a population of "in-situ" bowshocks (103 objects) that face giant HII regions where the relative motions between the star and ISM may be caused by bulk outflows from an overpressured bubble. We also identify 58 objects that face 8 micron bright-rimmed clouds and apparently constitute a sub-class of in-situ bowshocks where the stellar wind interacts with a photo-evaporative flow from an eroding molecular cloud interface (i.e., "PEF bowshocks"). Orientations of the arcuate nebulae exhibit a correlation over small angular scales, indicating that external influences such as HII regions are responsible for producing some bowshock nebulae. However, the vast majority of this sample appear to be isolated (499 objects) from obvious external influences., Comment: Accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal.
