The widespread adoption of distributed energy resources (DERs) such as household solar panels and electric vehicles is a key component of California’s plan to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Unfortunately, DER uptake and thus the benefits it provides are disproportionately concentrated among wealthy, white households and communities in the state. Here, we propose that the California State Legislature address this inequity through two distinct mechanisms: 1) requiring the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) to prioritize DER programs that maximize non-energy benefits (e.g., reduced emissions, comfort, and safety, as proposed in 2021’s Senate Bill 345) and 2) directing the CPUC to prioritize infrastructure updates in disadvantaged communities. These changes would help transform sustainable technologies from a force that exacerbates existing inequality gaps into a mechanism for promoting public health and economic well-being in poor communities and communities of color.

The synthesis is described of some structures formally related to aryloxypropanolamine in which the aryl and amine residues are joined by combinations derived from glycerol and ethylene glycol.

The symmetrical benzene-1,3-disulphonalkylamides described herein are found to be virtually devoid of carbonic anhydrase inhibiting activity. Certain dialkylamides nevertheless retain significant diuretic activity, which is consequently regarded as an intrinsic property of the 1,3-disulphamylbenzene ring system and not as solely an expression of carbonic anhydrase inhibiting activity.

A new route to the anilides of 4-halogeno-3-sulphamoylbenzoic acid is described. These novel compounds, and in particular 4-chloro-2′-methyl-3-sulphamoylbenzanilide, are found to be potent orally active diuretic agents.

Various derivatives of 1-benzenesulphonyl-3-butyl(or cyclohexyl)ureas substituted in the aryl nucleus are described.

A procedure has been developed for converting sulphamyl derivatives of aniline into the corresponding sulphamyl-sulphonchlorides. The latter have been condensed with ammonia and with amines giving novel 1,2-, 1,3- and 1,4-disulphamyl derivatives of benzene, required for examination as diuretics.

The condensation of some halogeno-2,4-disulphamylbenzenes with basic reagents has been examined. Some of the resulting products have been converted into 1,2,4-benzothiadiazine-1,1-dioxide derivatives. By using 2-aminopyridine in the reaction the novel azaphenthiazines (VII) were obtained.

The requirements for diuretic activity in the sulphamoylbenzoic acid series have been studied. Optimal activity is shown by 4-halogeno-3- sulphamoylbenzoic acids.

Work on sulphonamides as in vitro inhibitors of carbonic anhydrase has been extended by the preparation and assay of novel types. Although diphenylsulphonamides, p-alkoxycarbonylbenzene sulphonamides and 5-alkoxycarbonylamino-1:3:4-thiadiazole-2-sulphon-amides showed noteworthy activity in vitro, only the thiadiazole derivatives possessed diuretic activity in the rat.

Further new variants of tolbutamide (and two new imidazolines) are described.

Some structural analogues of the active compounds (I), (II) and (III) are described. Their biological study failed to reveal significant hypoglycaemic activity

The synthesis of some 3-aryloxy-1-Δ3-piperideinopropan-2-ol derivatives and related types is described. Their biological study has led to the selection of 1-Δ3-piperideino-3-o-toloxypropan-2-ol hydrochloride, Tolpronine, for fuller evaluation as an analgesic agent.

The preparation of 5-chloro-2,4-disulphamyltoluene, its properties and estimation in biological fluids are described.

Some 2-alkyl-3-aryl-3H-4-quinazolones (I; X = 0) have been prepared and a number of them converted into the thioquinazolones (I; X = S). A new method for the synthesis of 3-alkyl-2-aryl-3H-4-quinazolones (VI) has been developed and has been employed for the synthesis of representative derivatives. Biological study of the above compounds revealed that some of them, and in particular the 2-alkyl-3-halophenyl-3H-4-quinazolones are potent anticonvulsant agents.

The preparation is described of some dialkylaminoethoxyethyl esters (X) of diethylphenylacetic acid and of some corresponding esters of l-phenylcycfopentane-l-carboxylic acid and 4-phenyltetrahydropyran-4-carboxylic acid. These were required for biological study which revealed that the diethylaminoethoxyethyl ester (X; R = R' = Et) of diethylphenylacetic acid (Oxeladin) was the most potent antitussive agent of the present series.

Some 3-arylpropane-1:2-diols formally related to mephenesin (I) were synthesised for examination as muscle relaxants. Their pharmacological study failed to reveal advantages over (I).

The preparation of some 1-aryloxy-3-[(2-indol-3′-ylethyl)amino]propan-2-ols is described. Their biological activity was insignificant.

The relationship between structure and hypotensive activity in the title compounds has been investigated.

The preparation of some miscellaneous types formally related to mephenesin is reported.
