Abstract Photosynthesis is one of the most important biological processes on Earth, providing the main source of bioavailable energy, carbon, and oxygen via the use of sunlight. Despite this importance, the minimum light level sustaining photosynthesis and net growth of primary producers in the global ocean is still unknown. Here, we present measurements from the MOSAiC field campaign in the central Arctic Ocean that reveal the resumption of photosynthetic growth and algal biomass buildup under the ice pack at a daily average irradiance of not more than 0.04 ± 0.02 µmol photons m−2 s−1 in late March. This is at least one order of magnitude lower than previous estimates (0.3–5 µmol photons m−2 s−1) and near the theoretical minimum light requirement of photosynthesis (0.01 µmol photons m−2 s−1). Our findings are based on measurements of the temporal development of the under-ice light field and concurrent measurements of both chlorophyll a concentrations and potential net primary production underneath the sea ice at 86 °N. Such low light requirements suggest that euphotic zones where photosynthesis can occur in the world’s oceans may extend further in depth and time, with major implications for global productivity estimates.

The reduction of Arctic summer sea ice due to climate change can lead to increased primary production in parts of the Barents Sea if sufficient nutrients are available. Changes in the timing and magnitude of primary production may have cascading consequences for the zooplankton community and ultimately for higher trophic levels. In Arctic food webs, both small and large copepods are commonly present, but may have different life history strategies and hence different responses to environmental change. We investigated how contrasting summer sea-ice cover and water masses in the northern Barents Sea influenced the copepod community composition and secondary production of small and large copepods along a transect from 76°N to 83°N in August 2018 and August 2019. Bulk abundance, biomass, and secondary production of the total copepod community did not differ significantly between the two years. There were however significant spatial differences in the copepod community composition and production, with declining copepod abundance from Atlantic to Arctic waters and the highest copepod biomass and production on the Barents Sea shelf. The boreal Calanus finmarchicus showed higher abundance, biomass, and secondary production in the year with less sea-ice cover and at locations with a clear Atlantic water signal. Significant differences in the copepod community between areas in the two years could be attributed to interannual differences in sea-ice cover and Atlantic water inflow. Small copepods contributed more to secondary production in areas with no or little sea ice and their production was positively correlated to water temperature and ciliate abundance. Large copepods contributed more to secondary production in areas with extensive sea ice and their production was positively correlated with chlorophyll a concentration. Our results show how pelagic communities might function in a future ice-free Barents Sea, in which the main component of the communities are smaller-sized copepod species (including smaller-sized Calanus and small copepods), and the secondary production they generate is available in energetically less resource-rich portions.

We study the size and structure of globular cluster (GC) systems of 118 early-type galaxies from the NGVS, MATLAS, and ACSVCS surveys. Fitting Sérsic profiles, we investigate the relationship between effective radii of GC systems ( R _e _,gc ) and galaxy properties. GC systems are 2–4 times more extended than host galaxies across the entire stellar mass range of our sample (10 ^8.3 M _⊙ < M _* < 10 ^11.6 M _⊙ ). The relationship between R _e _,gc and galaxy stellar mass exhibits a characteristic “knee” at a stellar mass of M _p ≃ 10 ^10.8 , similar to the galaxy R _e –stellar mass relationship. We present a new characterization of the traditional blue and red GC color subpopulations, describing them with respect to host galaxy $(g^{\prime} -i^{\prime} )$ color (Δ _gi ): GCs with similar colors to their hosts have a “red” Δ _gi , and those significantly bluer GCs have a “blue” Δ _gi . The GC populations with red Δ _gi , even in dwarf galaxies, are twice as extended as the stars, suggesting that formation or survival mechanisms favor the outer regions. We find a tight correlation between R _e _,gc and the total number of GCs, with intrinsic scatter ≲0.1 dex spanning two and three orders of magnitude in size and number, respectively. This holds for both red and blue subpopulations, albeit with different slopes. Assuming that N _GC,Total correlates with M _200 , we find that the red GC systems have effective radii of roughly 1%–5% R _200 , while the blue GC systems in massive galaxies can have sizes as large as ∼10% R _200 . Environmental dependence on R _e _,gc is also found, with lower-density environments exhibiting more extended GC systems at fixed mass.

Las personas con enfermedad de Parkinson (EP) muestran dificultades de escritura, que pueden indicar alteraciones en la planificación lingüístico-cognitiva o en la mecánica de la escritura. Este estudio busca establecer si hay alteración del procesamiento fonológico-silábico en la escritura en personas con EP en estadio leve y si la modalidad del input (auditivo o pictórico) influye en el acceso a la unidad silábica. Veinte participantes con EP y 20 controles escribieron palabras en español. Se presentó una palabra auditivamente o un dibujo para indicar la palabra a escribir. Se compararon palabras donde las mismas dos letras pertenecían a diferentes sílabas (a y r en ba.res, intersilábica) o a la misma sílaba (bar.ba, intrasilábico). Se midió la duración de la pausa entre estas dos letras (intervalo 2: I2). Las personas mayores del grupo control evidenciaron un I2 mayor en la condición intersilábica, independientemente de la modalidad del input, lo cual implica un papel funcional de la sílaba en el procesamiento de la escritura, como anteriormente se ha encontrado en adultos jóvenes. Las personas del grupo EP solo mostraron este efecto con input auditivo, no con input pictórico. Parece que la sílaba actúa como unidad fonológica de procesamiento en la escritura con el input auditivo, que también activa procesos fonológicos. Por el contrario, el procesamiento visual de los dibujos parece interferir con el proceso de escritura habitual.

The Barents Sea is a transition zone between the Atlantic and the Arctic Ocean. The ecosystem in this region is highly variable, and a seasonal baseline of biological factors is needed to monitor the effects of global warming. In this study, we report the results from the investigations of the bacterial and archaeal community in late winter, spring, summer, and early winter along a transect through the northern Barents Sea into the Arctic Ocean east of Svalbard using 16S rRNA metabarcoding. Winter samples were dominated by members of the SAR11 clade and a community of nitrifiers, namely Cand. Nitrosopumilus and LS-NOB (Nitrospinia), suggest a prevalence of chemoautotrophic metabolisms. During spring and summer, members of the Gammaproteobacteria (mainly members of the SAR92 and OM60(NOR5) clades, Nitrincolaceae) and Bacteroidia (mainly Polaribacter, Formosa, and members of the NS9 marine group), which followed a succession based on their utilization of different phytoplankton-derived carbon sources, prevailed. Our results indicate that Arctic marine bacterial and archaeal communities switch from carbon cycling in spring and summer to nitrogen cycling in winter and provide a seasonal baseline to study the changes in these processes in response to the effects of climate change.

Background and purpose: To assess the impact of posterior fossa pilocytic astrocytoma (PA) removal in pediatric patients, with special focus on postoperative neurological outcome after repeated surgery for tumor remnants. Methods: Our institutional database was screened for patients with PA treated between 2000 and 2019. Patients ≤ 18 years of age with complete clinical records, preoperative contrast enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and postoperative follow-up time of ≥ 6 months were suitable for study inclusion. Functional outcome was quantified with the modified Ranking Scale (mRS) score and assessed at admission, at discharge and at every follow-up investigation. Predictors of hydrocephalus, cranial nerve deficits and tumor recurrence were evaluated. Results: A total of 57 pediatric patients with a mean age of 7.7 ± 4.8 years were included in the analysis. 27 (47.3%) children suffered from hydrocephalus at diagnosis, out of which 19 (33.3%) required a subsequent VP-Shunt. 22 (39.3%) patients had a partial resection, of which 9 (40.9%) went through second-look surgery. 2 patients with initially radiological confirmation of complete resection, had a tumor recurrence at FU and needed second-look surgery. Among the children requiring second-look surgery, 7 (63.6%) had a complete resection. Favorable outcome (mRS≤2) after initial and second-look surgery was observed in 52 patients (91.2%). Univariate analysis identified tumor location in the floor of the 4th ventricle (p = 0.030), and repeated surgery for tumor remnant removal (p = 0.043) as predictors for post-operative cranial nerve deficits. Multivariate analysis confirmed this independent association. The incidence of tumor recurrence occurred more often in patients with previous partial resection (p = 0.009) as well as in lesions located in the cerebellar peduncles (p = 0.043). Partial resection remained an independent predictor after multivariate logistic regression analysis (p = 0.045). Conclusions: Incomplete resection of posterior fossa PA is a risk factor for tumor recurrence and repeated surgery to remove tumor remnants increases the risk of new postoperative deficits. Thus, the risk of iatrogenic deterioration due to second look surgery should be implemented in the primary pre- and intraoperative decision-making.

Abstract Background Necrotizing soft tissue infections (NSTI) require immediate radical debridement, broad-spectrum antibiotics and intensive care. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy (HBOT) may be performed adjunctively, but unequivocal evidence for its benefits is still lacking. Methods We performed a retrospective single-center study including 192 patients with necrotizing fasciitis or Fournier's gangrene to assess in-hospital mortality and outcome dependent on patient, disease and treatment characteristics with or without HBOT. Results The in-hospital mortality rate was 27.6%. Factors associated with increased mortality according to multivariate analysis were higher age, affection of multiple or problem localizations (odds ratio (OR) = 2.88, P = 0.003), ineligibility for HBOT despite clinical indication (OR = 8.59, P = 0.005), pathogens in blood cultures (OR = 3.36, P = 0.002), complications (OR = 10.35, P

At the KIT a hybrid manufacturing concept for nuclear fusion First Walls is developed combining aspects of conventional and Additive Manufacturing (AM) technologies. The state of the art for ITER does not cover all specifications of a DEMO relevant First Wall. Thus, additional R&D-work has been initiated in terms of manufacturing. The AM technology basis used in the presented process combination is Cold Spray metal powder deposition applied in alternation with machining including the feature of filling grooves temporarily with a water-soluble granulate for creation of closed channels and cavities. Thus, the technology provides the option to manufacture shells with a thin gas tight membrane on top of previously machined structures. This membrane is used as pressure seal and makes the joining of shells by Hot Isostatic Pressing (HIP) into one monolithic body possible. This paper describes the manufacturing process and recalls differences and common aspects with regard to conventional concepts of First Wall manufacturing. The achievement of Technology Readiness Level TRL 3 by mechanical qualification and comparison of the results to other HIP joint experiments is also demonstrated. Finally, an outlook is given concerning integration options of the technology into manufacturing of shells with cooling channel structures using Oxide Dispersion Strengthened (ODS) materials.

Introducción: el funcionamiento comunicativo y social en la vejez implica recursos cognitivos y emocionales. Según la teoría de la selectividad socioemocional (tss), los adultos mayores tienen afinidad por eventos positivos y cultivan sus habilidades emocionales. Objetivo: explorar la relación entre el funcionamiento comunicativo y social y el procesamiento de estímulos emocionales en el adulto mayor. Materiales y métodos: adultos mayores y adultos jóvenes realizaron una tarea computarizada de decisión léxica (tdl) y fueron evaluados en su funcionamiento comunicativo. Resultados: hubo diferencias estadísticamente significativas en el factor de valencia, con un procesamiento más rápido de estímulos con contenido emocional versus no emocional (2196 = 36.39; p < 0.001). En cuanto al funcionamiento comunicativo y social, al compararlo con el desempeño en la tdl, se evidenció que los adultos mayores obtuvieron tiempos de reacción más prolongados y mayores tasas de error en el procesamiento de estímulos, al igual que menores puntajes en el asha-facs. Conclusión: aun cuando no se evidencia una interacción entre el procesamiento de estímulos emocionales y el funcionamiento comunicativo y social, la valencia emocional influye en el procesamiento de palabras en los adultos mayores, con una preferencia y selectividad por los estímulos positivos.

Introduction: During the COVID-19-pandemic a significant decrease of up to 13% of all kinds of medical emergencies was reported. Similar trends were expected for aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhages (aSAH) and/or symptomatic aneurysms. Research question: To analyze a correlation of the SARS-CoV2-infection and the incidence of aSAH, and to assess the impact of the pandemic-lockdown on the incidence, the outcome and the course of patients suffering from aSAH and/or aneurysms. Material and methods: From March 16th, 2020 (first lockdown in Germany) to January 31st, 2021, all patients admitted to our hospital were screened by polymerase-chain-reaction (PCR) test for genetic material of SARS-CoV2. During this period, aSAH and symptomatic cerebral aneurysms were assessed and retrospectively compared to a historic longitudinal case-cohort. Results: Of 109.927 PCR-tests, 7.856 (7.15%) revealed a SARS-CoV2-infection. None of the patients mentioned above were tested positively. The number of aSAH and symptomatic aneurysms rose by 20.5% (39 vs. 47 cases) (p ​= ​0.93). Poor grade aSAH, as well as extensive bleeding-patterns were more often observed (p ​= ​0.63 and p ​= ​0.40, respectively), with more symptomatic vasospasms diagnosed (5 vs. 9 patients). Mortality rate increased by 8,4%. Discussion and conclusion: A correlation between SARS-CoV2-infection and the incidence of aSAH could not be established. Still, the overall number and the number of poor-grade aSAHs increased as well as symptomatic aneurysms during the pandemic. Therefore, we might conclude that dedicated neurovascular competence should be retained in designated centers to care for these patients even or especially in special situations affecting the global healthcare system.

Although bacteria are commonly co-occurring in microalgal cultivation and production systems, little is known about their community structure and how it might be affected by specific microalgal groups or growth conditions. A better understanding about the underlying factors that determine the growth of specific bacterial populations is not only important for optimizing microalgal production processes, but also in the context of product quality when the algal biomass is to be used for future food or feed. We analyzed the bacterial community composition associated with nine microalgal strains in stock culture, maintained in two different growth media, to explore how specific taxonomic microalgal groups, microalgal origin, or the growth medium affect the bacterial community composition. Furthermore, we monitored the bacterial community composition for three Phaeodactylum strains during batch cultivation in bubble columns to examine if the bacterial composition alters during cultivation. Our results reveal that different microalgal genera, kept at the same cultivation conditions over many years, displayed separate and unique bacterial communities, and that different strains of the same genus had very similar bacterial community compositions, despite originating from different habitats. However, when maintained in a different growth medium, the bacterial composition changed for some. During batch cultivation, the bacterial community structure remained relatively stable for each Phaeodactylum strain. This indicates that microalgae seem to impact the development of the associated bacterial communities and that different microalgal genera could create distinct conditions that select for dominance of specific bacteria. However, other factors such as the composition of growth medium also affect the formation of the bacterial community structure.

Multiomics approaches need to be applied in the central Arctic Ocean to benchmark biodiversity change and to identify novel species and their genes. As part of MOSAiC, EcoOmics will therefore be essential for conservation and sustainable bioprospecting in one of the least explored ecosystems on Earth.

Hice una búsqueda en Internet y las otras personas que la usan así, o de manera similar, indican que es del diccionario Merriam-Webster.

Abstract Concomitant maxillofacial and cervical spine injuries occur in 0.8–12% of the cases. We examined the relation of injury localization and the probability of cervical spine fracture. A retrospective study was conducted on patients that have been treated at Dortmund General Hospital for injuries both to the maxillofacial region and to the cervical spine between January 1st, 2007 and December 31th, 2017. Descriptive statistical methods were used to describe the correlation of cervical spine injuries with gender, age as well as maxillofacial injury localization. 7708 patients were hospitalized with maxillofacial injury, among them 173 were identified with cervical spine injury. The average ages for both genders lie remarkably above the average of all maxillofacial trauma patients (36.2 y.o. in male and 50.9 y.o. in female). In the group of men, most injuries were found between the ages of 50 and 65. Whereas most injuries among women occurred after the age of 80. The relative ratio of cervical spine injuries (CSI) varies between 1.1 and 5.26% of the maxillofacial injuries (MFI), being highest in the soft tissue injury group, patients with forehead fractures (3.12%) and patients with panfacial fractures (2.52%). Further, nasal, Le Fort I and II, zygomatic complex and mandibular condyle fractures are often associated with CSI. Fractures next to the Frankfurt horizontal plane represent 87.7% of all MFI with concomitant CSI. Patients in critical age groups with a high-energy injury are more likely to suffer both, MFI and CSI injuries. Our findings help to avoid missing the diagnosis of cervical spine injury in maxillofacial trauma patients.

Este año se cumplen 40 años de existencia de nuestra revista Avances en Psicología Latinoamericana (APL), fundada por el Dr. Rubén Ardila en 1982 con el nombre Avances en Psicología Clínica Latinoamericana (ACPL), como cuenta él mismo (Ardila, 1986). Felicitamos y agradecemos al Dr. Ardila por haber creado esta revista, que es solo uno de sus aportes a la promoción de la psicología en Latinoamérica y en el mundo.

Quiero empezar dando gracias. Gracias a Miguel Gutiérrez y a Luisa Fernanda Ramírez, por ofrecerme la oportunidad de liderar esta revista y entregármela en un excelente estado. Además, felicitaciones por los grandes logros que alcanzaron durante su gestión y que documentaron en el anterior editorial (Gutiérrez-Peláez & Ramírez, 2020). También deseo agradecer que me siguen apoyando como parte del comité editorial, al igual que Andrés Pérez-Acosta y Sara Cadavid, quienes están a mi lado con Rat und Tat (consejo y acción, como se dice en alemán). Dicho esto, quiero aclarar que el retraso en la publicación de este primer número del 2021 y los procesos editoriales, se debe únicamente a mis desafíos en aprender cómo manejar las nuevas funciones en la revista y combinar estas con aquella situación del covid-19, que nos ha azotado más tiempo del que pensábamos.

Objective Demographic changes have led to a higher incidence of C-2 fractures, especially in elderly patients. For patients with type II fractures, treatment remains controversial, as discussed by Anderson and D’Alonzo, due to the rising morbidity and mortality rates for any treatment. The aim of this study was to compare conservative and surgical management in patients with type II C-2 fractures regarding outcomes, complications, and the mortality rate. Methods A retrospective analysis was performed of the medical records, X-rays, and/or computed tomography scans of patients ≥80 years of age with type II fractures who were admitted to our Department of Neurosurgery between January 1990 and December 2017. The success of treatment was evaluated 3 months after surgery. Results In total, 125 patients were included, of whom 98 were treated surgically and 27 were treated conservatively. Surgical treatment was successful in 90.8% of cases, while conservative treatment was successful in 70.0%. The in-hospital mortality was 14.29% and the 3-month mortality was 27.8% in the surgical group, compared to 3.7% and 20% in the conservatively treated group. The in-hospital complication rate was 22.4% in the surgically treated patients and 7.4% in the conservatively treated patients. Conclusion Surgical treatment of type II fractures seemed to be associated with higher success and complication rates than conservative treatment. Nevertheless, 3-month mortality was comparable in both groups. Therefore, we conclude that surgical treatment for type II fractures in elderly patients is superior to conservative management, although conservative treatment remains a valuable option in elderly patients with severe comorbidities.

Countless low-surface brightness objects - including spiral galaxies, dwarf galaxies, and noise patterns - have been detected in recent large surveys. Classically, astronomers visually inspect those detections to distinguish between real low-surface brightness galaxies and artefacts. Employing the Dark Energy Survey (DES) and machine learning techniques, Tanoglidis et al. (2020) have shown how this task can be automatically performed by computers. Here, we build upon their pioneering work and further separate the detected low-surface brightness galaxies into spirals, dwarf ellipticals, and dwarf irregular galaxies. For this purpose, we have manually classified 5567 detections from multi-band images from DES and searched for a neural network architecture capable of this task. Employing a hyperparameter search, we find a family of convolutional neural networks achieving similar results as with the manual classification, with an accuracy of 85% for spiral galaxies, 94% for dwarf ellipticals, and 52% for dwarf irregulars. For dwarf irregulars - due to their diversity in morphology - the task is difficult for humans and machines alike. Our simple architecture shows that machine learning can reduce the workload of astronomers studying large data sets by orders of magnitudes, as will be available in the near future with missions such as Euclid.

In the Arctic, seasonal changes are substantial, and as a result, the marine bacterial community composition and functions differ greatly between the dark winter and light-intensive summer. While light availability is, overall, the external driver of the seasonal changes, several internal biological interactions structure the bacterial community during shorter timescales. These include specific phytoplankton–bacteria associations, viral infections and other top-down controls. Here, we uncover these microbial interactions and their effects on the bacterial community composition during a full annual cycle by manipulating the microbial food web using size fractionation. The most profound community changes were detected during the spring, with ‘mutualistic phytoplankton’—Gammaproteobacteria interactions dominating in the pre-bloom phase and ‘substrate-dependent phytoplankton’—Flavobacteria interactions during blooming conditions. Bacterivores had an overall limited effect on the bacterial community composition most of the year. However, in the late summer, grazing was the main factor shaping the community composition and transferring carbon to higher trophic levels. Identifying these small-scale interactions improves our understanding of the Arctic marine microbial food web and its dynamics.

Health-related quality of life (HRQOL) is an important clinical outcome parameter. Its analysis is particularly meaningful to patients with minor functional impairment. The main goal of this study was to assess long-term data of HRQOL and their variables for patients undergoing treatment for unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIAs). Therefore, a cross-sectional study of HRQOL (SF-36 questionnaire) was conducted in patients treated for UIA using a telephone survey assessing numerous medical and sociodemographic variables. A total of 96 patients with a follow up longer than 36 months post-treatment were included. HRQOL results were compared with the German reference population. Uni- and multivariate analyses were performed to detect variables with an impact on outcome. After a mean follow up of 57.75 ± 13.56 months, patients with treated UIAs showed a significant decrease in the mental health domains ‘role emotional’ and ‘social functioning’ and the ‘mental health component score’ (MHCS) compared with the age- and sex-matched reference population. Overall, 47% of the patients showed a clinically and psychosocially relevant decrease compared with the mean MHCS of the reference population. Multivariate analysis suggests that mainly the treatment modality (coiling versus clipping) and additional remaining untreated UIAs negatively impacted mental HRQOL. In conclusion, the partly significant losses in HRQOL identify the necessity for less-wearing treatment strategies and a better prediction of risk of UIA rupture. Our results indicate that certain factors in the guidance and management of patients undergoing endovascular treatment may negatively affect their mental HRQOL. The relevance of additional UIAs remaining untreated on HRQOL is a new finding that should be considered in the counseling of patients with multiple UIAs.

The warming of the Arctic causes increased riverine discharge, coastal erosion, and the thawing of permafrost. Together, this is leading to an increased wash out of terrestrial dissolved organic matter (tDOM) into the coastal Arctic ecosystems. This tDOM may be anticipated to affect both carbon and nutrient flow in the microbial food web and microbial community composition, but there are few studies detailing this in Arctic marine ecosystems. We tested the effects of tDOM on the bacterial community composition and net-growth by extracting DOM from the active layer of permafrost soil and adding the aged tDOM concentrate to a natural microbial fjord community (Kongsfjorden, NW Svalbard). This resulted in an increased carbon load of 128 μM DOC in the tDOM treatment relative to the control of 83 μM DOC. We observed changes in community composition and activity in incubations already within 12 h where tDOM was added. Flow cytometry revealed that predominantly large bacteria increased in the tDOM treated incubations. The increase of this group correlated with the increase in relative abundance of the genus Glaciecola (Gammaproteobacteria). Glaciecola were initially not abundant in the bacterial community (0.6%), but their subsequent increase up to 47% after 4 days upon tDOM addition compared to 8% in control incubations indicates that they are likely capable of degrading permafrost derived DOM. Further, according to our experimental results we hypothesize that the tDOM addition increased bacterivorous grazing by small protists and thus tDOM might indirectly also effect higher trophic levels of the microbial food web.

Background. Cushing’s disease (CD) and Cushing’s syndrome (CS) are chronic illnesses, characterized by symptoms of prolonged hypercortisolism, which often changes to hypocortisolism after successful treatment. In view of the high disease burden of CD/CS patients and long-term impaired quality of life, the present survey was conducted to gain information about subjective illness distress and patients’ specific needs in terms of supportive measures beyond medical interventions. Patients and Methods. Cross-sectional questionnaire study including patients with CD treated in 2 German neurosurgical tertiary referral centers and CD/CS patient members of a US-based patient support group completed a survey inquiring about disease burden, coping strategies, and support needs. Additionally, the degree of interest in different offers, e.g., internet-based programs and seminars, was assessed. Results. 84 US and 71 German patients answered the questionnaire. Patients in both countries indicated to suffer from Cushing-related symptoms, reduced performance, and psychological problems. 48.8% US patients and 44.4% German patients stated that good medical care and competent doctors helped them the most in coping with the illness. US patients were more interested in support groups (p=0.035) and in courses on illness coping (p=0.008) than the German patients, who stated to prefer brochures (p=0.001). 89.3% of US patients would attend internet-based programs compared to 75.4% of German patients (p=0.040). There were no differences between groups for the preferred duration of and the willingness to pay for such a program, but US patients would travel longer distances to attend a support meeting (p=0.027). Conclusion. Patients in both countries need skilled physicians and long-term medical care in dealing with the effects of CD/CS, whereas other support needs differ between patients of both countries. The latter implies that not only disease-specific but also culture-specific training programs would need to be considered to satisfy the needs of patients in different countries.

One of the most abundant archaeal groups on Earth is the Thaumarchaeota. They are recognized as major contributors to marine ammonia oxidation, a crucial step in the biogeochemical cycling of nitrogen. Their universal success is attributed to a high genomic flexibility and niche adaptability. Based on differences in the gene coding for ammonia monooxygenase subunit A (amoA), two different ecotypes with distinct distribution patterns in the water column have been identified. We used high-throughput sequencing of 16S rRNA genes combined with archaeal amoA functional gene clone libraries to investigate which environmental factors are driving the distribution of Thaumarchaeota ecotypes in the Atlantic gateway to the Arctic Ocean through an annual cycle in 2014. Upon reactivation from latency and during lytic infections in neurons, alphaherpesviruses assemble cytosolic capsids, capsids associated with enveloping membranes, and transport vesicles harboring fully enveloped capsids. It is debated whether capsid envelopment of herpes simplex virus (HSV) is completed in the soma prior to axonal targeting or later, and whether the mechanisms are the same in neurons derived from embryos or from adult hosts. We used HSV mutants impaired in capsid envelopment to test whether the inner tegument proteins pUL36 or pUL37 necessary for microtubule-mediated capsid transport were sufficient for axonal capsid targeting in neurons derived from the dorsal root ganglia of adult mice. Such neurons were infected with HSV1-ΔUL20 whose capsids recruited pUL36 and pUL37, with HSV1-ΔUL37 whose capsids associate only with pUL36, or with HSV1-ΔUL36 that assembles capsids lacking both proteins. While capsids of HSV1-ΔUL20 were actively transported along microtubules in epithelial cells and in the somata of neurons, those of HSV1-ΔUL36 and -ΔUL37 could only diffuse in the cytoplasm. Employing a novel image analysis algorithm to quantify capsid targeting to axons, we show that only a few capsids of HSV1-ΔUL20 entered axons, while vesicles transporting gD utilized axonal transport efficiently and independently of pUL36, pUL37, or pUL20. Our data indicate that capsid motility in the somata of neurons mediated by pUL36 and pUL37 does not suffice for targeting capsids to axons, and suggest that capsid envelopment needs to be completed in the soma prior to targeting of herpes simplex virus to the axons, and to spreading from neurons to neighboring cells.

The land-to-ocean flux of organic carbon is increasing in glacierized regions in response to increasing temperatures in the Arctic (Hood et al., 2015). In order to understand the response of the coastal ecosystem metabolism to the organic carbon input it is essential to determine the bioavailability of the different carbon sources in the system. We quantified the bacterial turnover of organic carbon in a high Arctic fjord system (Young Sound, NE Greenland) during the ice-free period (July-October 2014) and assessed the quality and quantity of the 3 major organic carbon sources; (1) local phytoplankton production (2) runoff from land-terminating glaciers and a lowland river and (3) inflow from the ocean shelf. We found that despite relatively low concentrations of DOC in the rivers, the bioavailability of the river–DOC was significantly higher than in the fjord, and characterized by high cell-specific bacterial production and low C:N ratios. In contrast, the DOC source entering via inflow of coastal shelf waters had high DOC concentrations with high C:N and low specific bacterial production. The phytoplankton production in the fjord could not sustain the bacterial carbon demand, but was still the major source of organic carbon for bacterial growth. We assessed the bacterial community composition and found that communities were specific for the different water types i.e., the bacterial community of the coastal inflow water could be traced mainly in the subsurface water, while the glacial river community strongly dominated the surface water in the fjord.

The aim of this cross sectional anatomical study is to determine the distribution of the defined anatomical variations of the Sylvian fissure (SF) in a normal population and to analyze its bilateral superposable presentation. Furthermore, we examined the course of the middle cerebral artery (MCA) and the division of the MCA branches in relation to the SF types. A total of 300 cranial CT scans - 100 CT angiography datasets and 86 MRIs of patients without intracranial pathologies - were reviewed. The SF was categorized in five types based on Yasargils description and our previous publication. The length, diameter and branches of the MCA were measured and compared to the SF types. SPSS 23.0 for Windows® was used for statistical analysis. We analyzed data of 300 patients (171 male, 129 female; mean age 51.6years). Symmetric and mirror-imaged coherence of the SF was found in 266 patients (88.7%, χ2(8)=3.04, p=0.932). The distribution of the SF types showed significant differences in patients younger than 60 years compared to older patients. A bifurcation was observed in 72.0%. A trifurcation was observed in 12.0% and a false bifurcation in 16.0% of patients. There was no significant difference of the measured diameters or length of the M1 segments according to the SF types. In this CT and MRI based anatomical study we could show that a twisted and narrow SF occurred more frequently in patients younger than 60 years of age. The SF has a high congruence intra-individually. The anatomical condition might influence the size and configuration of the proximal MCA, which in turn might influence the surgeon’s choice of the approach to the SF. Preoperative evaluation on the basis of the presented data, may help to decide for an appropriate approach to the SF.

El estudio de la percepción temprana del habla surgió a comienzos de la década de los setenta, pero solo se desarrolló plenamente diez años después, debido a la aparición y adaptación de nuevos métodos empíricos y herramientas tecnológicas. En este artículo se presenta una revisión de los métodos experimentales que pueden ser utilizados para el estudio de la percepción del habla en niños menores de un año. También se refieren algunas de las conclusiones teóricas más relevantes que se han alcanzado gracias a su aplicación. Se pretende brindar un panorama del estado metodológico y teórico del estudio de la percepción del lenguaje hablado durante el primer año de vida.

En este artículo se discuten los aspectos fundamentales de la teoría lingüística de Noam Chomsky, una de la más importantes y polémicas formas de explicar la adquisición, comprensión y producción del lenguaje humano. Se realiza un análisis a partir de los textos principales de la teoría desde 1956 hasta la actualidad y se contrastan los postulados primordiales con puntos de vista de distintos autores. Se detallan además los aspectos que se han mantenido invariables y los que se han modificado a lo largo del tiempo. Todo esto con el fin de permitir una comprensión clara de la propuesta actual de Chomsky.

Increasing temperatures, with pronounced effects at high latitudes, have raised questions about potential changes in species composition, as well as possible increased importance of small-celled phytoplankton in marine systems. In this study, we mapped out one of the smallest and globally most widespread primary producers, the picocyanobacterium Synechococcus, within the Atlantic inflow to the Arctic Ocean. In contrast to the general understanding that Synechococcus is almost absent in polar oceans due to low temperatures, we encountered high abundances (up to 21,000 cells mL-1) at 79 °N, and documented their presence as far north as 82.5 °N. Covering an annual cycle in 2014, we found that during autumn and winter, Synechococcus was often more abundant than picoeukaryotes, which usually dominate the picophytoplankton communities in the Arctic. Synechococcus community composition shifted from a quite high genetic diversity during the spring bloom to a clear dominance of two specific operational taxonomic units (OTUs) in autumn and winter. We observed abundances higher than 1,000 cells mL-1 in water colder than 2 °C at seven distinct stations and size-fractionation experiments demonstrated a net growth of Synechococcus at 2 °C in the absence of nano-sized grazers at certain periods of the year. Phylogenetic analysis of petB sequences demonstrated that these high latitude Synechococcus group within the previously described cold-adapted clades I and IV, but also contributed to unveil novel genetic diversity, especially within clade I.

A manera de introducción se refieren algunas concepciones académicas sobre la adquisición conceptual y se comenta la falta de un método de estudio empírico de los conceptos nativos. Enseguida, se presenta la definición que a lo largo del tiempo ha defendido Chomsky sobre dichos conceptos. Finalmente, se instauran de manera teórica las condiciones de un procedimiento empírico para el estudio de los conceptos innatos, titulado análisis semántico de corpus.

Resumen En esta investigación se analizaron aspectos del procesamiento léxico de 180 escolares entre segundo y quinto grado de primaria (25 por curso). Específicamente, se analizó qué hacen cuando leen palabras existentes frente a palabras no existentes (pseudopalabras). Es decir, qué hacen cuando leen signos con significado y significante y qué hacen cuando solo tienen disponible la información fonológica y ortográfica de una serie de letras. Hay que recordar que, al inicio de la escolaridad, muchas de las palabras escritas son para los escolares pseudopalabras. Se llevó a cabo un experimento con la tarea de decisión léxica, y los resultados mostraron que el efecto de lexicalidad se presentó en todos los cursos de segundo a quinto de primaria y que la lectura de los participantes de mayor edad fue más rápida y precisa.

Support systems for programming education are in widespread use. However common standards for the exchange of general (learning) content and tests do not meet the special requirements of programming tasks, e.g. dealing with complex submissions consisting of multiple files or the combination of different (automatic) evaluation and assessment procedures. Thus, due to missing interoperability, programming tasks cannot be exchanged between systems easily despite the fact that this would be desirable due to the high cost of the development of good tasks. In this paper, an extensible XML-based format for the exchange of programming tasks is presented, which is already used in multiple systems. The XML-format is available on-line [PFMA].

The Wnt signaling pathway has been associated with many essential cell processes. This study aims to examine the effects of Wnt signaling on proliferation of cultured HEK293T cells. Cells were incubated with Wnt3a, and the activation of the Wnt pathway was followed by analysis of the level of the β-catenin protein and of the expression levels of the target genes MYC and CCND1. The level of β-catenin protein increased up to fourfold. While the mRNA levels of c-Myc and cyclin D1 increased slightly, the protein levels increased up to a factor of 1.5. Remarkably, MTT and BrdU assays showed different results when measuring the proliferation rate of Wnt3a stimulated HEK293T cells. In the BrdU assays an increase of the proliferation rate could be detected, which correlated to the applied Wnt3a concentration. Oppositely, this correlation could not be shown in the MTT assays. The MTT results, which are based on the mitochondrial activity, were confirmed by analysis of the succinate dehydrogenase complex by immunofluorescence and by western blotting. Taken together, our study shows that Wnt3a activates proliferation of HEK293 cells. These effects can be detected by measuring DNA synthesis rather than by measuring changes of mitochondrial activity.

The methanation of CO2 within the power-to-gas concept was investigated under fluctuating reaction conditions to gather detailed insight into the structural dynamics of the catalyst. A 10 wt % Ni/Al2O3 catalyst with uniform 3.7 nm metal particles and a dispersion of 21% suitable to investigate structural changes also in a surface-sensitive way was prepared and characterized in detail. Operando quick-scanning X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS/QEXAFS) studies were performed to analyze the influence of 30 s and 300 s H2 interruptions during the methanation of CO2 in the presence of O2 impurities (technical CO2). These conditions represent the fluctuating supply of H2 from renewable energies for the decentralized methanation. Short-term H2 interruptions led to oxidation of the most reactive low-coordinated metallic Ni sites, which could not be re-reduced fully during the subsequent methanation cycle and accordingly caused deactivation. Detailed evaluation of the extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectra showed surface oxidation/reduction processes, whereas the core of the Ni particles remained reduced. The 300-s H2 interruptions resulted in bulk oxidation already after the first cycle and a more pronounced deactivation. These results clearly show the importance and opportunities of investigating the structural dynamics of catalysts to identify their mechanism, especially in power-to-chemicals processes using renewable H2.

PURPOSE: To prospectively evaluate 7 Tesla time-of-flight (TOF) magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) in comparison to 1.5 Tesla TOF MRA and 7 Tesla non-contrast enhanced magnetization-prepared rapid acquisition gradient-echo (MPRAGE) for delineation of unruptured intracranial aneurysms (UIA). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixteen neurosurgical patients (male n = 5, female n = 11) with single or multiple UIA were enrolled in this trial. All patients were accordingly examined at 7 Tesla and 1.5 Tesla MRI utilizing dedicated head coils. The following sequences were obtained: 7 Tesla TOF MRA, 1.5 Tesla TOF MRA and 7 Tesla non-contrast enhanced MPRAGE. Image analysis was performed by two radiologists with regard to delineation of aneurysm features (dome, neck, parent vessel), presence of artifacts, vessel-tissue-contrast and overall image quality. Interobserver accordance and intermethod comparisons were calculated by kappa coefficient and Lin's concordance correlation coefficient. RESULTS: A total of 20 intracranial aneurysms were detected in 16 patients, with two patients showing multiple aneurysms (n = 2, n = 4). Out of 20 intracranial aneurysms, 14 aneurysms were located in the anterior circulation and 6 aneurysms in the posterior circulation. 7 Tesla MPRAGE imaging was superior over 1.5 and 7 Tesla TOF MRA in the assessment of all considered aneurysm and image quality features (e.g. image quality: mean MPRAGE7T: 5.0; mean TOF7T: 4.3; mean TOF1.5T: 4.3). Ratings for 7 Tesla TOF MRA were equal or higher over 1.5 Tesla TOF MRA for all assessed features except for artifact delineation (mean TOF7T: 4.3; mean TOF1.5T 4.4). Interobserver accordance was good to excellent for most ratings. CONCLUSION: 7 Tesla MPRAGE imaging demonstrated its superiority in the detection and assessment of UIA as well as overall imaging features, offering excellent interobserver accordance and highest scores for all ratings. Hence, it may bear the potential to serve as a high-quality diagnostic tool for pretherapeutic assessment and follow-up of untreated UIA.

Targeting viral vectors to certain tissues in vivo has been a major challenge in gene therapy. Cell type-directed vector capsids can be selected from random peptide libraries displayed on viral capsids in vitro but so far this system could not easily be translated to in vivo applications. Using a novel, PCR-based amplification protocol for peptide libraries displayed on adeno-associated virus (AAV), we selected vectors for optimized transduction of primary tumor cells in vitro. However, these vectors were not suitable for transduction of the same target cells under in vivo conditions. We therefore performed selections of AAV peptide libraries in vivo in living animals after intravenous administration using tumor and lung tissue as prototype targets. Analysis of peptide sequences of AAV clones after several rounds of selection yielded distinct sequence motifs for both tissues. The selected clones indeed conferred gene expression in the target tissue while gene expression was undetectable in animals injected with control vectors. However, all of the vectors selected for tumor transduction also transduced heart tissue and the vectors selected for lung transduction also transduced a number of other tissues, particularly and invariably the heart. This suggests that modification of the heparin binding motif by target-binding peptide insertion is necessary but not sufficient to achieve tissue-specific transgene expression. While the approach presented here does not yield vectors whose expression is confined to one target tissue, it is a useful tool for in vivo tissue transduction when expression in tissues other than the primary target is uncritical.
