Language resources are necessary for language processing,but building them is costly, involves many researches from different areas and needs constant updating. In this paper, we describe the crosslingual framework used for developing the Multilingual Central Repository (MCR), a multilingual knowledge base that includes wordnets of Basque, Catalan, English, Galician, Portuguese, Spanish and the following ontologies: Base Concepts, Top Ontology, WordNet Domains and Suggested Upper Merged Ontology. 3. Machine Translation of Novels in the Age of Transformer

Abstract

In this chapter we build a machine translation (MT) system tailored to the literary domain, specifically to novels, based on the state-of-the-art architecture in neural MT (NMT), the Transformer (Vaswani et al., 2017), for the translation direction English-to-Catalan. Subsequently, we assess to what extent such a system can be useful by evaluating its translations, by comparing this MT system against three other systems (two domain-specific systems under the recurrent and phrase-based paradigms and a popular generic on-line system) on three evaluations. The first evaluation is automatic and uses the most-widely used automatic evaluation metric, BLEU. The two remaining evaluations are manual and they assess, respectively, preference and amount of post-editing required to make the translation error-free. Abstract

This chapter discusses the application of neural machine translation (NMT) to works of fiction that have been published as e-books in a bilingual setting. These bilingual e-books are translated using NMT for readers with an intermediate or high level of a foreign language who want to read novels originally written in English. NMT is used to provide a translation in their mother tongue that the readers can refer to on demand, e.g., to help them understand difficult passages in the original. The main hypothesis of this research is that the quality provided by tailored NMT systems is sufficient to meet this goal and that using this methodology will enhance the readers’ experience. We expect the users of these bilingual e-books to read most of the book in the original language and to use the translation only sporadically when encountering difficult parts. This could help the reading experience become more intense, since the reader does not need to consult external sources such as dictionaries or use external public NMT engines.In this chapter, we first discuss our motivation and present the goals of the project. Then the previous work in this field is presented. After that, we explain the process of customizing an NMT engine and creating the bilingual e-books. We follow with the design of the survey and the results of a reading experiment using an English short story set up for Catalan native speakers with a between-subjects design. Finally, we reflect on the results and propose avenues for future work. We are mainly interested in describing a useful methodology for creating bilingual books with NMT and assessing their usability by involving L2 readers.

26. Comparing NMT and PBSMT for post-editing in-domain formal texts: A case study

Abstract

This paper details a comparative analysis between phrase-based statistical machine translation (PBSMT) and neural machine translation (NMT) for English-Spanish in-domain medical documents using human rankings, fluency and adequacy, and post-editing (technical and temporal) effort, performed by professional translators. When MT output is ranked against translations performed by professional translators, results show a clear preference for human translations, with NMT in the second position. Regarding MT outputs, NMT is perceived as more fluent and conveying better the meaning of the source sentence. Despite this preference, post-editing temporal effort does not improve significantly in NMT compared to PBSMT, although technical effort is reduced.

28. What do post-editors correct? : A fine-grained analysis of SMT and NMT errors

Abstract

The recent improvements in neural MT (NMT) have driven a shift from statistical MT (SMT) to NMT. However, to assess the usefulness of MT models for post-editing (PE) and have a detailed insight of the output they produce, we need to analyse the most frequent errors and how they affect the task. We present a pilot study of a fine-grained analysis of MT errors based on post-editors corrections for an English to Spanish medical text translated with SMT and NMT. We use the MQM taxonomy to compare the two MT models and have a categorized classification of the errors produced. Even though results show a great variation among post-editors' corrections, for this language combination fewer errors are corrected by post-editors in the NMT output. NMT also produces fewer accuracy errors and errors that are less critical., Les millores recents en la TA neuronal (TAN) han impulsat un canvi de la TA estadística (TAE) a la TAN. Tanmateix, per avaluar la utilitat dels models de TA per a la postedició (PE), és fonamental analitzar els errors més freqüents i com afecten la tasca. Presentem un estudi pilot d'una anàlisi detallada dels errors de la TA basat en correccions de postedició d'un text mèdic traduït de l'anglès al castellà amb TAE i TAN. Hem utilitzat la taxonomia MQM per comparar els dos models de TA i hem classificat els errors produïts. La nostra anàlisi també inclou una avaluació de la variació entre els posteditors, que se centra en els passatges amb una major variació en la postedició., Los avances recientes en TA neuronal (TAN) han producido un giro desde la TA estadística (TAE) hacia la TAN. Sin embargo, para evaluar la utilidad de los modelos de TA para la posedición, es imprescindible analizar los errores más frecuentes y cómo afectan a esta tarea. Presentamos el estudio piloto de un análisis pormenorizado de errores en TA basado en las correcciones realizadas por los poseditores en la traducción de un texto médico realizada del inglés al castellano mediante TAE y TAN. Utilizamos la taxonomía MQM para comparar los dos modelos de TA y obtener una clasificación categorizada de los errores resultantes. Nuestro análisis incluye también una evaluación de las diferencias entre poseditores, centrada en los pasajes en los que la posedición presentaba mayor disparidad.

Abstract

Currently, post-editing of machine translation (MT) has been introduced as a regular practice in the translation workflow, especially since the good results in quality obtained by neural MT (NMT). This fact is linked to the efforts LSPs and customers have done to reduce costs due to the recent global crisis and the increasing globalization, which has had a negative impact on translators' revenues and on their working practices. In this context, post-editing is often perceived with a negative bias by translators. We study attitudes of translators post-editing for the first time and relate them to their productivity rates. We also compare the results with a survey answered by professional post-editors assessing their perception of the task in the current marketplace. Actualmente, la posedición de traducción automática (TA) se considera una práctica habitual en el flujo de trabajo de traducción, sobre todo por la buena calidad que se obtiene con la traducción automática neuronal (TAN). Este hecho está asociado a los esfuerzos que han hecho los proveedores de servicios lingüísticos y los clientes para reducir los costos debido a la reciente crisis mundial y a la creciente globalización, que ha tenido un impacto negativo en los ingresos de los traductores y en sus prácticas profesionales. En este contexto, los traductores suelen percibir la posedición con un sesgo negativo. En este artículo se presenta uno de los primeros estudios estudio sobre las actitudes de los traductores ante la posedición y se relacionan con sus tasas de productividad. También cotejamos los resultados con una encuesta contestada por poseditores profesionales que evalúan su percepción de la tarea en el mercado actual. Actualment, la postedició de traducció automàtica (TA) és considerada una pràctica habitual en el flux de treball de la traducció, sobretot per la bona qualitat que s'obté amb la traducció automàtica neuronal (TAN). Aquest fet està assocat als esforços que han fet els proveïdors de serveis lingüístics i els clients per reduir els costos a causa de la crisi mundial dels darrers temps i la creixent globalització, que ha tingut un impacte negatiu sobre els ingressos dels traductors i sobre les seves pràctiques professionals. En aquest cotext, els traductors acostumen a percebre la postedició amb un biaix negatiu. En aquest article es presenta un dels primers estudis sobre les actituds dels traductors envers la postedició i es relacionen amb les seves taxes de productivitat. També acarem els resultats amb una enquesta contestada per posteditors professionals que avaluen la seva percepció de la tasca en el mercat actual.

Abstract

[Plan TL/Formación/Estudio/Estrategia Formativa en TL] Este informe pretende establecer unas primeras directrices sobre la formación en Tecnologías del Lenguaje (TL) en el estado español y en particular una estrategia formativa específica para el sistema universitario aplicada a grados, másteres y doctorados en las áreas de conocimiento relacionadas con las TL. Para ello, se han analizado detalladamente las iniciativas de formación existentes en España, Europa y en otros países de la OCDE. También se ha realizado un estudio de la demanda de los empleadores en TL así como una revisión de los informes internacionales de prestigio en este ámbito. El informe también incluye: a) una propuesta de temáticas, acciones formativas y directrices generales para la estrategia de formación en TL, b) la identificación de sectores de mayor interés en los que convendría definir una estrategia de formación específica en TL, c) el diseño de la estrategia de formación en TL específica para el sistema universitario español en el que se incluirán las competencias y resultados de aprendizaje que deberían asegurarse al final de cada ciclo formativo propuesto, y finalmente, d) un plan de acción a corto y medio plazo para la formación en TL en el sector universitario., Funded by Plan de Impulso de las Tecnologías del lenguaje (Plan TL)

Abstract

In this paper a semi-automatic procedure for the expansion of the Croatian Wordnet (CroWN) is presented. An EnglishCroatian dictionary was used in order to translate monosemous PWN 3.0 English variants. The precision values of the automatic process is low (about 30%), but the results proved valuable for the enlargment of CroWN. After manual validation, 10, 884 new synset-variant pairs were added to CroWN, achieving a total of 62, 075 synset-variant pairs.

Abstract

Nowadays the electronic book is gaining territory in the literary market but it is still a slow and expensive process. To encourage the use of the electronic book it is posible to offer additional features that will improve the user’s reading experience. One of these improvements can be the offer of the original text and the translated text together.This project consists of the creation of interactive bilingual e-books. This project is carried out in the investigation group Language Processing Group (LPG) of the Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC). The published originals and translations are in the public domain. The developed programs are based on free software and will also be published under a free license. Actualmente el libro electrónico va ganando territorio en el mercado editorial pero sigue siendo un proceso lento y costoso. Para incentivar el uso del libro electrónico se pueden ofrecer prestaciones adicionales que mejoren la experiencia lectora del usuario. Una de estas mejoras puede ser ofrecer conjuntamente el texto original y el traducido. El presente trabajo explica el proceso de creación del libro electrónico bilingüe de la novela Robinson Crusoe de Daniel Defoe para ser incorporada al proyecto InLéctor. Este proyecto pretende crear herramientas para la creación de libros electrónicos bilingües interactivos. Este proyecto se lleva a cabo en el grupo de investigación Language Processing Group (LPG) de la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC). Las obras y las traducciones literarias que se publican son de dominio público. Los programas desarrollados se basan en software libre y se publicarán también bajo una licencia libre.

Abstract

In this paper a system for the automatic creation of parallel bilingual electronic books is presented. The system allows creating e-books, where source sentences are linked with the corresponding target sentences. Users can read in the original, and clicking on a given sentence, the corresponding sentence in the target language will be shown. Then she or he can continue reading the translation and coming back to the original version clicking in a target language sentence. The source language book is automatically aligned at the sentence level with the target language translation of the book. This system is not using a machine translation system, but instead, it shows the real translation. We have created several bilingual e-books using classic novels and its translations in the public domain, but the same system can be used for any book, provided you have the rights for the original and the translation. The system is aimed to people willing to read in the original, having a mid-high level in the language. We also present the process of creation of bilingual dictionaries from free lexical resources. Both resources, the bilingual e-book and the bilingual dictionary can be of great help for readers willing to read books in the original version. Aquest article presenta un sistema de creació automàtica de llibres bilingües amb textos alineats. El sistema permet crear llibres electrònics en què l'oració en la llengua de partida està vinculada amb la corresponent oració en la llengua d'arribada. Els usuaris poden llegir en la llengua original i veure l'oració corresponent en la llengua d'arribada fent clic sobre l'oració de partida. D'aquesta manera pot continuar llegint en la llengua d'arribada o tornar a la versió original fent clic sobre qualsevol oració. El llibre en la llengua de partida s'alinea automàticament a nivell d'oració amb la seva traducció en la llengua d'arribada. Aquest sistema no utilitza la traducció automàtica sinó que, per contra, mostra la traducció publicada de l'obra original en la llengua d'arribada. Hem creat diversos llibres electrònics bilingües utilitzant novel·les clàssiques i la seva traducció de domini públic, però aquest sistema també és utilitzable per a qualsevol llibre per al qual l'usuari tingui drets sobre l'original i la traducció. El sistema s'adreça a persones que vulguin llegir originals en una llengua en què tenen un nivell mitjà o alt. Aquest article també presenta el procés de creació de diccionaris bilingües a partir de recursos lèxics gratuïts. Tots dos recursos, el del llibre electrònic i el de diccionaris bilingües, poden ser de gran ajuda per a tots aquells lectors que vulguin accedir a la versió original dels llibres. Este artículo presenta un sistema de creación automática de libros bilingües con textos alineados. El sistema permite crear libros electrónicos en los que la oración en la lengua de partida está vinculada con la correspondiente oración en la lengua de llegada. Los usuarios pueden leer en la lengua original y ver la oración correspondiente en la lengua de llegada haciendo clic sobre la oración de partida. De esta manera puede continuar leyendo en la lengua de llegada o volver a la versión original haciendo clic sobre cualquier oración. El libro en la lengua de partida se alinea automáticamente a nivel de oración con su traducción en la lengua de llegada. Este sistema no utiliza la traducción automática, sino que, por el contrario, muestra la traducción publicada de la obra original en la lengua de llegada. Hemos creado diversos libros electrónicos bilingües utilizando novelas clásicas y su traducción de dominio público. Sin embargo, este sistema también se puede utilizar para alinear cualquier libro del que el usuario disponga de derechos sobre el original y la traducción. El sistema va dirigido a persona que quieran leer originales en una lengua en la que tienen un nivel medio o alto. Este artículo también presenta el proceso de creación de diccionarios bilingües a partir de recursos léxicos gratuitos.
