In this work, we explore heuristics for the Adjacency Graph Packing problem, which can be applied to the Double Cut and Join (DCJ) Distance Problem. The DCJ is a rearrangement operation and the distance problem considering it is a well established method for genome comparison. Our heuristics will use the structure called adjacency graph adapted to include information about intergenic regions, multiple copies of genes in the genomes, and multiple circular or linear chromosomes. The only required property from the genomes is that it must be possible to turn one into the other with DCJ operations. We propose one greedy heuristic and one heuristic based on Genetic Algorithms. Context. Spectroscopic surveys like APOGEE, GALAH, and LAMOST have significantly advanced our understanding of the Milky Way by providing extensive stellar parameters and chemical abundances. Complementing these, photometric surveys with narrow/medium-band filters, such as the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS), offer the potential to estimate stellar parameters and abundances for a much larger number of stars. Aims. This work develops methodologies to extract stellar atmospheric parameters and selected chemical abundances from S-PLUS photometric data, which spans ~3000 square degrees using seven narrowband and five broadband filters. Methods. Using 66 S-PLUS colors, we estimated parameters based on training samples from LAMOST, APOGEE, and GALAH, applying Cost-Sensitive Neural Networks (NN) and Random Forests (RF). We tested for spurious correlations by including abundances not covered by the S-PLUS filters and evaluated NN and RF performance, with NN consistently outperforming RF. Including Teff and log g as features improved accuracy by ~3%. We retained only parameters with a goodness-of-fit above 50%. Results. Our approach provides reliable estimates of fundamental parameters (Teff, log g, [Fe/H]) and abundance ratios such as [{\alpha}/Fe], [Al/Fe], [C/Fe], [Li/Fe], and [Mg/Fe] for ~5 million stars, with goodness-of-fit >60%. Additional ratios like [Cu/Fe], [O/Fe], and [Si/Fe] were derived but are less accurate. Validation using star clusters, TESS, and J-PLUS data confirmed the robustness of our methodology. Conclusions. By leveraging S-PLUS photometry and machine learning, we present a cost-effective alternative to high-resolution spectroscopy for deriving stellar parameters and abundances, enabling insights into Milky Way stellar populations and supporting future classification efforts., Comment: 23 pages, 14 Figures

Autonomous driving needs good roads, but 85% of Brazilian roads have damages that deep learning models may not regard as most semantic segmentation datasets for autonomous driving are high-resolution images of well-maintained urban roads. A representative dataset for emerging countries consists of low-resolution images of poorly maintained roads and includes labels of damage classes; in this scenario, three challenges arise: objects with few pixels, objects with undefined shapes, and highly underrepresented classes. To tackle these challenges, this work proposes the Performance Increment Strategy for Semantic Segmentation (PISSS) as a methodology of 14 training experiments to boost performance. With PISSS, we reached state-of-the-art results of 79.8 and 68.8 mIoU on the Road Traversing Knowledge (RTK) and Technik Autonomer Systeme 500 (TAS500) test sets, respectively. Furthermore, we also offer an analysis of DeepLabV3+ pitfalls for small object segmentation.

The case study examines the impact of the CGScholar (Common Ground Scholar) AI Helper on a pilot research initiative involving the writing development of 11th-grade students in English Language Arts (ELA). CGScholar AI Helper is an evolving and innovative web-based application designed to support students in their writing tasks by providing specified AI-generated feedback. This study is one of six interventions. It involved one teacher and six students in a diverse school with low income students and explored to what extent customized AI-driven feedback can support students' writing development. The findings suggest that the implementation of AI Helper supported the development of students' writing in a number of ways. It also elicited suggestions from the teacher and students about ways of improving the still in development tool.

This study examines gender disparities in communication research through citation metrics, authorship patterns, team composition, and faculty salaries. Using data from 62,359 papers across 121 communication journals, we find that while female authors are increasingly represented, citation gaps persist, with sole-authored papers by women receiving fewer citations than those by men, especially in smaller teams. Team composition analysis reveals a tendency toward gender homophily, with single-gender teams being more common. In top U.S. communication journals, female authors face underrepresentation and citation disparities favoring male authors. Salary analysis from leading U.S. public universities shows that female faculty earn lower salaries at the Assistant Professor level, though disparities lessen at higher ranks. These findings highlight the need for greater efforts to promote gender equity through inclusive collaboration, equitable citation practices, and fair compensation.

We used a supervised machine learning algorithm (probabilistic random forest) to classify ~130 million sources in the VISTA Survey of the Magellanic Clouds (VMC). We used multi-wavelength photometry from optical to far-infrared as features to be trained on, and spectra of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN), galaxies and a range of stellar classes including from new observations with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) and SAAO 1.9m telescope. We also retain a label for sources that remain unknown. This yielded average classifier accuracies of ~79% (SMC) and ~87% (LMC). Restricting to the 56,696,719 sources with class probabilities (P$_{class}$) > 80% yields accuracies of ~90% (SMC) and ~98% (LMC). After removing sources classed as 'Unknown', we classify a total of 707,939 (SMC) and 397,899 (LMC) sources, including > 77,600 extragalactic sources behind the Magellanic Clouds. The extragalactic sources are distributed evenly across the field, whereas the Magellanic sources concentrate at the centres of the Clouds, and both concentrate in optical/IR colour-colour/magnitude diagrams as expected. We also test these classifications using independent datasets, finding that, as expected, the majority of X-ray sources are classified as AGN (554/883) and the majority of radio sources are classed as AGN (1756/2694) or galaxies (659/2694), where the relative AGN-galaxy proportions vary substantially with radio flux density. Various approaches utilizing Transformer architectures have achieved state-of-the-art results in Natural Language Processing (NLP). Based on this success, numerous architectures have been proposed for other types of data, such as in biology, particularly for protein sequences. Notably among these are the ESM2 architectures, pre-trained on billions of proteins, which form the basis of various state-of-the-art approaches in the field. However, the ESM2 architectures have a limitation regarding input size, restricting it to 1,022 amino acids, which necessitates the use of preprocessing techniques to handle sequences longer than this limit. In this paper, we present the long and quantized versions of the ESM2 architectures, doubling the input size limit to 2,048 amino acids.

The field of serious games for health has grown significantly, demonstrating effectiveness in various clinical contexts such as stroke, spinal cord injury, and degenerative neurological diseases. Despite their potential benefits, therapists face barriers to adopting serious games in rehabilitation, including limited training and game literacy, concerns about cost and equipment availability, and a lack of evidence-based research on game effectiveness. Serious games for rehabilitation often involve repetitive exercises, which can be tedious and reduce motivation for continued rehabilitation, treating clients as passive recipients of clinical outcomes rather than players. This study identifies gaps and provides essential insights for advancing serious games in rehabilitation, aiming to enhance their engagement for clients and effectiveness as a therapeutic tool. Addressing these challenges requires a paradigm shift towards developing and co-creating serious games for rehabilitation with therapists, researchers, and stakeholders. Furthermore, future research is crucial to advance the development of serious games, ensuring they adhere to evidence-based principles and engage both clients and therapists. This endeavor will identify gaps in the field, inspire new directions, and support the creation of practical guidelines for serious games research.

This manuscript deals with a hierarchical control problem for Oldroyd equation under the Stackelberg-Nash strategy. The Oldroyd equation model is defined by non-regular coefficients, that is, they are bounded measurable functions. We assume that we can act in the dynamic of the system by a hierarchy of controls, where one main control (the leader) and several additional secondary control (the followers) act in order to accomplish their given tasks: controllability for the leader and optimization for followers. We obtain the existence and uniqueness of Nash equilibrium and its characterization, the approximate controllability with respect to the leader control, and the optimality system for leader control., Comment: 28 pages

Recent cosmological analyses measuring distances of Type Ia Supernovae (SNe Ia) and Baryon Acoustic Oscillations (BAO) have all given similar hints at time-evolving dark energy. To examine whether underestimated SN Ia systematics might be driving these results, Efstathiou (2024) compared overlapping SN events between Pantheon+ and DES-SN5YR (20% SNe are in common), and reported evidence for a $\sim$0.04 mag offset between the low and high-redshift distance measurements of this subsample of events. If these offsets are arbitrarily subtracted from the entire DES-SN5YR sample, the preference for evolving dark energy is reduced. In this paper, we reproduce this offset and show that it has two sources. First, 43% of the offset is due to DES-SN5YR improvements in the modelling of supernova intrinsic scatter and host galaxy properties. These are scientifically-motivated modelling updates implemented in DES-SN5YR and their associated uncertainties are captured within the DES-SN5YR systematic error budget. Even if the less accurate scatter model and host properties from Pantheon+ are used instead, the DES-SN5YR evidence for evolving dark energy is only reduced from 3.9$\sigma$ to 3.3$\sigma$. Second, 38% of the offset is due to a misleading comparison because different selection functions characterize the DES subsets included in Pantheon+ and DES-SN5YR and therefore individual SN distance measurements are expected to be different because of different bias corrections. A study is presented of $B^+ \to K^0_{\rm S} K^- \pi^+ K^-$ and $B^+ \to K^0_{\rm S} K^+ \pi^- K^+$ decays based on the analysis of proton-proton collision data collected with the LHCb detector at centre-of-mass energies of 7, 8 and 13 TeV, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of $9 fb^{-1}$. The $K^0_{\rm S} K \pi$ invariant-mass distributions of both $B^+$ decay modes show, in the $m(K^0_{\rm S} K \pi)<1.85$ GeV mass region, a rich spectrum of light-meson resonances, resolved using an amplitude analysis. A complex mixture of $J^{PC}=0^{-+}, 1^{++}$ and $1^{+-}$ resonances is observed, dominated by $\eta(1405)$, $\eta(1470)$, $\eta(1760)$, $f_1(1285)$, $f_1(1420)$ and $h_1(1405)$ resonances. The $K^0_{\rm S} K \pi$ Dalitz plots are dominated by asymmetric crossing $K^* \bar K$ bands which are different for the two $B^+$ decay modes. This is due to a different interference pattern between the $1^{++}$ and $1^{+-}$ amplitudes in the two channels. Many High-Performance Computing (HPC) libraries rely on decision trees to select the best kernel hyperparameters at runtime,depending on the input and environment. However, finding optimized configurations for each input and environment is challengingand requires significant manual effort and computational resources. This paper presents MLKAPS, a tool that automates this task usingmachine learning and adaptive sampling techniques. MLKAPS generates decision trees that tune HPC kernels' design parameters toachieve efficient performance for any user input. MLKAPS scales to large input and design spaces, outperforming similar state-of-the-artauto-tuning tools in tuning time and mean speedup. We demonstrate the benefits of MLKAPS on the highly optimized Intel MKLdgetrf LU kernel and show that MLKAPS finds blindspots in the manual tuning of HPC experts. It improves over 85% of the inputswith a geomean speedup of x1.30. On the Intel MKL dgeqrf QR kernel, MLKAPS improves performance on 85% of the inputs with ageomean speedup of x1.18.

We present the point-spread function (PSF) modeling for weak lensing shear measurement using the full six years of the Dark Energy Survey (DES Y6) data. We review the PSF estimation procedure using the PIFF (PSFs In the Full FOV) software package and describe the key improvements made to PIFF and modeling diagnostics since the DES year three (Y3) analysis: (i) use of external Gaia and infrared photometry catalogs to ensure higher purity of the stellar sample used for model fitting, (ii) addition of color-dependent PSF modeling, the first for any weak lensing analysis, and (iii) inclusion of model diagnostics inspecting fourth-order moments, which can bias weak lensing measurements to a similar degree as second-order modeling errors. Through a comprehensive set of diagnostic tests, we demonstrate the improved accuracy of the Y6 models evident in significantly smaller systematic errors than those of the Y3 analysis, in which all $g$ band data were excluded due to insufficiently accurate PSF models. For the Y6 weak lensing analysis, we include $g$ band photometry data in addition to the $riz$ bands, providing a fourth band for photometric redshift estimation. Looking forward to the next generation of wide-field surveys, we describe several ongoing improvements to PIFF, which will be the default PSF modeling software for weak lensing analyses for the Vera C. We describe the photometric data set assembled from the full six years of observations by the Dark Energy Survey (DES) in support of static-sky cosmology analyses. DES Y6 Gold is a curated data set derived from DES Data Release 2 (DR2) that incorporates improved measurement, photometric calibration, object classification and value added information. Y6 Gold comprises nearly $5000~{\rm deg}^2$ of $grizY$ imaging in the south Galactic cap and includes 669 million objects with a depth of $i_{AB} \sim 23.4$ mag at S/N $\sim 10$ for extended objects and a top-of-the-atmosphere photometric uniformity $< 2~{\rm mmag}$. Y6 Gold augments DES DR2 with simultaneous fits to multi-epoch photometry for more robust galaxy shapes, colors, and photometric redshift estimates. Y6 Gold features improved morphological star-galaxy classification with efficiency $98.6\%$ and contamination $0.8\%$ for galaxies with $17.5 < i_{AB} < 22.5$. Additionally, it includes per-object quality information, and accompanying maps of the footprint coverage, masked regions, imaging depth, survey conditions, and astrophysical foregrounds that are used for cosmology analyses. After quality selections, benchmark samples contain 448 million galaxies and 120 million stars. Synthetic source injection (SSI), the insertion of sources into pixel-level on-sky images, is a powerful method for characterizing object detection and measurement in wide-field, astronomical imaging surveys. Within the Dark Energy Survey (DES), SSI plays a critical role in characterizing all necessary algorithms used in converting images to catalogs, and in deriving quantities needed for the cosmology analysis, such as object detection rates, galaxy redshift estimation, galaxy magnification, star-galaxy classification, and photometric performance. We present here a source injection catalog of $146$ million injections spanning the entire 5000 deg$^2$ DES footprint, generated using the Balrog SSI pipeline. Through this sample, we demonstrate that the DES Year 6 (Y6) image processing pipeline provides accurate estimates of the object properties, for both galaxies and stars, at the percent-level, and we highlight specific regimes where the accuracy is reduced. We then show the consistency between SSI and data catalogs, for all galaxy samples developed within the weak lensing and galaxy clustering analyses of DES Y6. The consistency between the two catalogs also extends to their correlations with survey observing properties (seeing, airmass, depth, extinction, etc.). Finally, we highlight a number of applications of this catalog to the DES Y6 cosmology analysis. This dataset is the largest SSI catalog produced at this fidelity and will serve as a key testing ground for exploring the utility of SSI catalogs in upcoming surveys such as the Vera C. Rubin Observatory Legacy Survey of Space and Time.

We present the Metadetection weak lensing galaxy shape catalogue from the six-year Dark Energy Survey (DES Y6) imaging data. This dataset is the final release from DES, spanning 4422 deg$^2$ of the southern sky. We describe how the catalogue was constructed, including the two new major processing steps, cell-based image coaddition and shear measurements with Metadetection. The DES Y6 Metadetection weak lensing shape catalogue consists of 151,922,791 galaxies detected over riz bands, with an effective number density of $n_{\rm eff}$ =8.22 galaxies per arcmin$^2$ and shape noise of $\sigma_e$ = 0.29. We carry out a suite of validation tests on the catalogue, including testing for PSF leakage, testing for the impact of PSF modeling errors, and testing the correlation of the shear measurements with galaxy, PSF, and survey properties. In addition to demonstrating that our catalogue is robust for weak lensing science, we use the DES Y6 image simulation suite (Mau, Becker et al. 2025) to estimate the overall multiplicative shear bias of our shear measurement pipeline. We find no detectable multiplicative bias at the roughly half-percent level, with m = (3.4 $\pm$ 6.1) x $10^{-3}$, at 3$\sigma$ uncertainty. This is the first time both cell-based coaddition and Metadetection algorithms are applied to observational data, paving the way to the Stage-IV weak lensing surveys., Comment: 30 pages, 22 figures

This work presents FreeSVC, a promising multilingual singing voice conversion approach that leverages an enhanced VITS model with Speaker-invariant Clustering (SPIN) for better content representation and the State-of-the-Art (SOTA) speaker encoder ECAPA2. FreeSVC incorporates trainable language embeddings to handle multiple languages and employs an advanced speaker encoder to disentangle speaker characteristics from linguistic content. Designed for zero-shot learning, FreeSVC enables cross-lingual singing voice conversion without extensive language-specific training. We demonstrate that a multilingual content extractor is crucial for optimal cross-language conversion. Our source code and models are publicly available.

A century and a half ago, James C. Maxwell conjectured that the number of zeroes of the electric field (equilibria of the potential) generated by a collection of $n$ point charges is at most $(n-1)^2$. In 2007 Gabrielov, Novikov, and Shapiro proved a much larger upper bound and posed two further conjectures. It is quite possible that Maxwell's quadratic upper bound is not tight, so it is prudent to find lower bounds. Our main contributions in this article are: (1) the construction of examples that achieve the highest ratios of the number of equilibria by point charges found to this day; (2) a counterexample to a conjecture of Gabrielov--Novikov--Shapiro, that the number of equilibria cannot exceed those of the distance function defined by the unit point charges.

This paper proposes a pitch plane trajectory tacking control solution for suborbital launch vehicles relying on adaptive feedback linearization. Initially, the 2D dynamics and kinematics for a single-engine, thrust-vector-controlled sounding rocket are obtained for control design purposes. Then, an inner-outer control strategy, which simultaneously tackles attitude and position control, is adopted, with the inner-loop comprising the altitude and pitch control and the outer-loop addressing the horizontal (downrange) position control. Feedback linearization is used to cancel out the non-linearities in both the inner and outer dynamics. Making use of Lyapunov stability theory, an adaptation law, which provides online estimates on the inner-loop aerodynamic uncertainty, is jointly designed with the output tracking controller via adaptive backstepping, ensuring global reference tracking in the region where the feedback linearization is well-defined. The zero dynamics of the inner-stabilized system are then exploited to obtain the outerloop dynamics and derive a Linear Quadratic Regulator (LQR) with integral action, which can stabilize them as well as reject external disturbances. In the outermost loop, the estimate on the correspondent aerodynamic uncertainty is indirectly obtained by using the inner loop estimates together with known aerodynamics relations. The resulting inner-outer position control solution is proven to be asymptotically stable in the region of interest. Using a single-stage sounding rocket, propelled by a liquid engine, as reference vehicle, different mission scenarios are tested in a simulation environment to verify the adaptability of the proposed control strategy. The system is able to track the requested trajectories while rejecting external wind disturbances. The standard of care for ovarian cancer comprises cytoreductive surgery, followed by adjuvant platinum-based chemotherapy plus taxane therapy and maintenance therapy with the antiangiogenic compound bevacizumab and/or a PARP inhibitor. Nevertheless, there is currently no clear clinical indication for the use of bevacizumab, highlighting the urgent need for biomarkers to assess the response to bevacizumab. In the present study, based on a novel RNA-seq dataset (n=181) and a previously published microarray-based dataset (n=377), we have identified an expression signature potentially associated with benefit from bevacizumab addition and assumed to reflect cancer stemness acquisition driven by activation of CTCFL. Patients with this signature demonstrated improved overall survival when bevacizumab was added to standard chemotherapy in both novel (HR=0.41(0.23-0.74), adj.p-value=7.70e-03) and previously published cohorts (HR=0.51(0.34-0.75), adj.p-value=3.25e-03), while no significant differences in survival explained by treatment were observed in patients negative for this signature. In addition to the CTCFL signature, we found several other reproducible expression signatures which may also represent biomarker candidates not related to established molecular subtypes of ovarian cancer and require further validation studies based on additional RNA-seq data.

Van der Waals heterostructures have promised the realisation of artificial materials with multiple physical phenomena such as giant optical nonlinearities, spin-to-charge interconversion in spintronics and topological carrier protection, in a single layered device through an infinitely diverse set of quantum materials. However, most efforts have only focused on exfoliated material that inherently limits both the dimensions of the materials and the scalability for applications. Here, we show the epitaxial growth of large area heterostructures of topological insulators (Bi2Se3), transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs, WSe2) and ferromagnets (Co), resulting in the combination of functionalities including tuneable optical nonlinearities, spin-to-charge conversion and magnetic proximity effects. This is demonstrated through coherent phase resolved terahertz currents, bringing novel functionalities beyond those achievable in simple homostructures. In particular, we show the role of different TMD polymorphs, with the simple change of one atomic monolayer of the artificial material stack entirely changing its optical, electrical and magnetic properties. This epitaxial integration of diverse two-dimensional materials offers foundational steps towards diverse perspectives in quantum material engineering, where the material polymorph can be controlled at technological relevant scales for coupling applications in, for example, van der Waals nonlinear optics, optoelectronics, spintronics, multiferroics and coherent current control.

Context. The supernova remnant (SNR) W44 and its surroundings are a prime target for studying the acceleration of cosmic rays (CRs). Several previous studies established an extended gamma-ray emission that is set apart from the radio shell of W44. This emission is thought to originate from escaped high-energy CRs that interact with a surrounding dense molecular cloud complex. Aims. We present a detailed analysis of Fermi-LAT data with an emphasis on the spatial and spectral properties of W44 and its surroundings. We also report the results of the observations performed with the MAGIC telescopes of the northwestern region of W44. Finally, we present an interpretation model to explain the gamma-ray emission of the SNR and its surroundings. Methods. We first performed a detailed spatial analysis of 12 years of Fermi-LAT data at energies above 1 GeV, in order to exploit the better angular resolution, while we set a threshold of 100MeV for the spectral analysis. We performed a likelihood analysis of 174 hours of MAGIC data above 130 GeV using the spatial information obtained with Fermi-LAT. Results. The combined spectra of Fermi-LAT and MAGIC, extending from 100MeV to several TeV, were used to derive constraints on the escape of CRs. Using a time-dependent model to describe the particle acceleration and escape from the SNR, we show that the maximum energy of the accelerated particles has to be ' 40 GeV. However, our gamma-ray data suggest that a small number of lower-energy particles also needs to escape. We propose a novel model, the broken-shock scenario, to account for this effect and explain the gamma-ray emission.

This matrix has attracted increasing attention in recent years, as it serves as a unifying structure that combines the adjacency matrix and the signless Laplacian matrix. The trimmed mean of $n$ scalar random variables from a distribution $P$ is the variant of the standard sample mean where the $k$ smallest and $k$ largest values in the sample are discarded for some parameter $k$. In this paper, we look at the finite-sample properties of the trimmed mean as an estimator for the mean of $P$. Assuming finite variance, we prove that the trimmed mean is ``sub-Gaussian'' in the sense of achieving Gaussian-type concentration around the mean. Under slightly stronger assumptions, we show the left and right tails of the trimmed mean satisfy a strong ratio-type approximation by the corresponding Gaussian tail, even for very small probabilities of the order $e^{-n^c}$ for some $c>0$. In the more challenging setting of weaker moment assumptions and adversarial sample contamination, we prove that the trimmed mean is minimax-optimal up to constants., Comment: 37 pages

Most observed exoplanets have high equilibrium temperatures. Understanding the chemistry of their atmospheres and interpreting their observations requires the use of chemical kinetic models including photochemistry. The thermal dependence of the vacuum ultraviolet (VUV) absorption cross sections of molecules used in these models is poorly known at high temperatures, leading to uncertainties in the resulting abundance profiles. The aim of our work is to study experimentally the thermal dependence of VUV absorption cross sections of molecules of interest for exoplanet atmospheres and provide accurate data for use in atmospheric models. This study focuses on acetylene (C2H2). We measured absorption cross sections of C2H2 at seven temperatures ranging from 296 to 773 K recorded in the 115-230 nm spectral domain using VUV spectroscopy and synchrotron radiation. These data were used in our 1D thermo-photochemical model, to assess their impact on the predicted composition of a generic hot Jupiter-like exoplanet atmosphere. The absolute absorption cross sections of C2H2 increase with temperature. This increase is relatively constant from 115 to 185 nm and rises sharply from 185 to 230 nm. The abundance profile of C2H2 calculated using the model shows a slight variation, with a maximum decrease of 40% near 5 x 10-5 bar, when using C2H2 absorption cross sections measured at 773 K compared to those at 296 K. This is explained by the absorption, higher in the atmosphere, of the actinic flux from 150 to 230 nm due to the increase in the C2H2 absorption in this spectral range. This change also impacts the abundance profiles of other by-products such as methane (CH4) and ethylene (C2H4). Continuous gravitational waves (CWs) emission from neutron stars carries information about their internal structure and equation of state, and it can provide tests of General Relativity. We present a search for CWs from a set of 45 known pulsars in the first part of the fourth LIGO--Virgo--KAGRA observing run, known as O4a. We conducted a targeted search for each pulsar using three independent analysis methods considering the single-harmonic and the dual-harmonic emission models. We find no evidence of a CW signal in O4a data for both models and set upper limits on the signal amplitude and on the ellipticity, which quantifies the asymmetry in the neutron star mass distribution. For the single-harmonic emission model, 29 targets have the upper limit on the amplitude below the theoretical spin-down limit. The lowest upper limit on the amplitude is $6.4\!\times\!10^{-27}$ for the young energetic pulsar J0537-6910, while the lowest constraint on the ellipticity is $8.8\!\times\!10^{-9}$ for the bright nearby millisecond pulsar J0437-4715. Additionally, for a subset of 16 targets we performed a narrowband search that is more robust regarding the emission model, with no evidence of a signal. Critical infrastructure is not indestructible. Threats, both emergent and systemic, have propagated beyond historical norms that risk mitigation efforts alone cannot alleviate. Interdependencies between infrastructural systems compound consequences at vulnerable locations but can be harnessed to maximize operational efficiency and recovery capability. Characterizing practical forms of resilient infrastructure through 5 basic principles (modularity, distributedness, redundancy, diversity, and plasticity) provides a foundation for critical infrastructure systems to absorb, recover, and adapt to disruptions agnostic of threat source. Challenges exist in developing methodological foundations for these principles within practical applications to prevent sunk cost and over-constraining operational procedures. Mental health risk prediction is a growing field in the speech community, but many studies are based on small corpora. This study illustrates how variations in test and train set sizes impact performance in a controlled study. Using a corpus of over 65K labeled data points, results from a fully crossed design of different train/test size combinations are provided. Two model types are included: one based on language and the other on speech acoustics. Both use methods current in this domain. An age-mismatched test set was also included. Results show that (1) test sizes below 1K samples gave noisy results, even for larger training set sizes; (2) training set sizes of at least 2K were needed for stable results; (3) NLP and acoustic models behaved similarly with train/test size variations, and (4) the mismatched test set showed the same patterns as the matched test set. Additional factors are discussed, including label priors, model strength and pre-training, unique speakers, and data lengths. While no single study can specify exact size requirements, results demonstrate the need for appropriately sized train and test sets for future studies of mental health risk prediction from speech and language.

This research employs Universal Differential Equations (UDEs) alongside differentiable physics to model viscoelastic fluids, merging conventional differential equations, neural networks and numerical methods to reconstruct missing terms in constitutive models. This study focuses on analyzing four viscoelastic models: Upper Convected Maxwell (UCM), Johnson-Segalman, Giesekus, and Exponential Phan-Thien-Tanner (ePTT), through the use of synthetic datasets. The methodology was tested across different experimental conditions, including oscillatory and startup flows. While the UDE framework effectively predicts shear and normal stresses for most models, it demonstrates some limitations when applied to the ePTT model. The findings underscore the potential of UDEs in fluid mechanics while identifying critical areas for methodological improvement. Also, a model distillation approach was employed to extract simplified models from complex ones, emphasizing the versatility and robustness of UDEs in rheological modeling.

Digital screening and monitoring applications can aid providers in the management of behavioral health conditions. We explore deep language models for detecting depression, anxiety, and their co-occurrence from conversational speech collected during 16k user interactions with an application. Labels come from PHQ-8 and GAD-7 results also collected by the application. We find that results for binary classification range from 0.86 to 0.79 AUC, depending on condition and co-occurrence. Best performance is achieved when a user has either both or neither condition, and we show that this result is not attributable to data skew. Finally, we find evidence suggesting that underlying word sequence cues may be more salient for depression than for anxiety.

Most active learning research has focused on methods which perform well when many labels are available, but can be dramatically worse than random selection when label budgets are small. Other methods have focused on the low-budget regime, but do poorly as label budgets increase. As the line between "low" and "high" budgets varies by problem, this is a serious issue in practice. We propose uncertainty coverage, an objective which generalizes a variety of low- and high-budget objectives, as well as natural, hyperparameter-light methods to smoothly interpolate between low- and high-budget regimes. We call greedy optimization of the estimate Uncertainty Herding; this simple method is computationally fast, and we prove that it nearly optimizes the distribution-level coverage. In experimental validation across a variety of active learning tasks, our proposal matches or beats state-of-the-art performance in essentially all cases; it is the only method of which we are aware that reliably works well in both low- and high-budget settings.

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly used by software engineers for code generation. However, limitations of LLMs such as irrelevant or incorrect code have highlighted the need for prompt programming (or prompt engineering) where engineers apply specific prompt techniques (e.g., chain-of-thought or input-output examples) to improve the generated code. Despite this, the impact of different prompt techniques -- and their combinations -- on code generation remains underexplored. In this study, we introduce CodePromptEval, a dataset of 7072 prompts designed to evaluate five prompt techniques (few-shot, persona, chain-of-thought, function signature, list of packages) and their effect on the correctness, similarity, and quality of complete functions generated by three LLMs (GPT-4o, Llama3, and Mistral). Our findings show that while certain prompt techniques significantly influence the generated code, combining multiple techniques does not necessarily improve the outcome. Additionally, we observed a trade-off between correctness and quality when using prompt techniques. This paper investigates a new class of equations called measure functional differential equations with state-dependent delays. We establish the existence and uniqueness of solutions and present a discussion concerning the appropriate phase space to define these equations. Also, we prove a version of periodic averaging principle to these equations. This type of result was completely open in the literature. These equations involving measure bring the advantage to encompass others such as impulsive, dynamic equations on time scales and difference equations, expanding their application potential. Additionally, we apply our theoretical insights to a real-time optimization strategy, using extremum seeking to validate the stability of an innovative algorithm under state-dependent delays. This application confirm the relevance of our findings in practical scenarios, offering valuable tools for advanced control system design. This paper extends the classical theory of Voronovskaya-type asymptotic expansions to generalized neural network operators defined on non-Euclidean and fractal domains. We introduce and analyze smooth operators activated by modified and generalized hyperbolic tangent functions, extending their applicability to manifold and fractal geometries. Key theoretical results include the preservation of density properties, detailed convergence rates, and asymptotic expansions. Additionally, we explore the role of fractional derivatives in defining neural network operators, which capture non-local behavior and are particularly useful for modeling systems with long-range dependencies or fractal-like structures. The growing complexity of dynamical systems and advances in data collection necessitates robust data-driven control strategies without explicit system identification and robust synthesis. Data-driven stability has been explored in linear and nonlinear systems, often by turning the problem into a linear or positive semidefinite program. This paper focuses on a new emerging property called contractivity, which refers to the exponential convergence of all system trajectories toward each other under a specified metric. Data-driven closed loop contractivity has been studied for the case of the 2-norm and assuming nonlinearities are lipschitz bounded in subsets of $\mathbb{R}^n$. We extend the analysis by considering Riemannian metrics for polynomial dynamics. The key to our derivation is to leverage the convex criteria for closed-loop contraction and duality results to efficiently check infinite dimensional membership constraints. Numerical examples demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method for both linear and nonlinear systems, highlighting its potential for robust data-driven contraction.

We introduce a class of left ideals (and subalgebras) of nest algebras determined by totally ordered families of partial isometries on a complex Hilbert space $H$. While homophily -- the tendency to link with similar others -- may nurture a sense of belonging and shared values, it can also hinder diversity and widen inequalities. Here, we unravel this trade-off analytically, revealing homophily traps for minority groups: scenarios where increased homophilic interaction among minorities negatively affects their structural opportunities within a network. We demonstrate that homophily traps arise when minority size falls below 25% of a network, at which point homophily comes at the expense of lower structural visibility for the minority group. This paper introduces a novel theoretical framework for identifying Lagrangian Coherent Structures (LCS) in manifolds with non-constant curvature, extending the theory to Finsler manifolds. By leveraging Riemannian and Finsler geometry, we generalize the deformation tensor to account for geodesic stretching in these complex spaces. The main result demonstrates the existence of invariant surfaces acting as LCS, characterized by dominant eigenvalues of the generalized deformation tensor. We discuss potential applications in astrophysics, relativistic fluid dynamics, and planetary science. A chatbot is an intelligent software application that automates conversations and engages users in natural language through messaging platforms. Leveraging artificial intelligence (AI), chatbots serve various functions, including customer service, information gathering, and casual conversation. Existing virtual assistant chatbots, such as ChatGPT and Gemini, demonstrate the potential of AI in Natural Language Processing (NLP). However, many current solutions rely on predefined APIs, which can result in vendor lock-in and high costs. To address these challenges, this work proposes a chatbot developed using a Sequence-to-Sequence (Seq2Seq) model with an encoder-decoder architecture that incorporates attention mechanisms and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) cells. By avoiding predefined APIs, this approach ensures flexibility and cost-effectiveness. The chatbot is trained, validated, and tested on a dataset specifically curated for the tourism sector in Draa-Tafilalet, Morocco. Key evaluation findings indicate that the proposed Seq2Seq model-based chatbot achieved high accuracies: approximately 99.58% in training, 98.03% in validation, and 94.12% in testing. The network traffic classification allows improving the management, and the network services offer taking into account the kind of application. The future network architectures, mainly mobile networks, foresee intelligent mechanisms in their architectural frameworks to deliver application-aware network requirements. The potential of convolutional neural networks capabilities, widely exploited in several contexts, can be used in network traffic classification. Thus, it is necessary to develop methods based on the content of packets transforming it into a suitable input for CNN technologies. Hence, we implemented and evaluated the Packet Vision, a method capable of building images from packets raw-data, considering both header and payload. Our approach excels those found in state-of-the-art by delivering security and privacy by transforming the raw-data packet into images. Therefore, we built a dataset with four traffic classes evaluating the performance of three CNNs architectures: AlexNet, ResNet-18, and SqueezeNet. Memory-centric computing aims to enable computation capability in and near all places where data is generated and stored. As such, it can greatly reduce the large negative performance and energy impact of data access and data movement, by 1) fundamentally avoiding data movement, 2) reducing data access latency & energy, and 3) exploiting large parallelism of memory arrays. Many recent studies show that memory-centric computing can largely improve system performance & energy efficiency. Major industrial vendors and startup companies have recently introduced memory chips with sophisticated computation capabilities. Going forward, both hardware and software stack should be revisited and designed carefully to take advantage of memory-centric computing. This work describes several major recent advances in memory-centric computing, specifically in Processing-in-DRAM, a paradigm where the operational characteristics of a DRAM chip are exploited and enhanced to perform computation on data stored in DRAM. Specifically, we describe 1) new techniques that slightly modify DRAM chips to enable both enhanced computation capability and easier programmability, 2) new experimental studies that demonstrate the functionally-complete bulk-bitwise computational capability of real commercial off-the-shelf DRAM chips, without any modifications to the DRAM chip or the interface, and 3) new DRAM designs that improve access granularity & efficiency, unleashing the true potential of Processing-in-DRAM., Comment: This paper is an extended version of an IEDM 2024 Invited Paper in the AI Memory focus session

Monitoring heterogeneous infrastructures and applications is essential to cope with user requirements properly, but it still lacks enhancements. The well-known state-of-the-art methods and tools do not support seamless monitoring of bare-metal, low-cost infrastructures, neither hosted nor virtualized services with fine-grained details. This work proposes VIrtualized NEtwork VIsion architecture (VINEVI), an intelligent method for seamless monitoring heterogeneous infrastructures and applications. The VINEVI architecture advances state of the art with a node-embedded traffic classification agent placing physical and virtualized infrastructures enabling real-time traffic classification. VINEVI combines this real-time traffic classification with well-known tools such as Prometheus and Victoria Metrics to monitor the entire stack from the hardware to the virtualized applications. Experimental results showcased that VINEVI architecture allowed seamless heterogeneous infrastructure monitoring with a higher level of detail beyond literature. Depression is a global health concern with a critical need for increased patient screening. Speech technology offers advantages for remote screening but must perform robustly across patients. We have described two deep learning models developed for this purpose. One model is based on acoustics; the other is based on natural language processing. Both models employ transfer learning. Data from a depression-labeled corpus in which 11,000 unique users interacted with a human-machine application using conversational speech is used. Results on binary depression classification have shown that both models perform at or above AUC=0.80 on unseen data with no speaker overlap. Performance is further analyzed as a function of test subset characteristics, finding that the models are generally robust over speaker and session variables. We conclude that models based on these approaches offer promise for generalized automated depression screening.

Deep learning models are rapidly gaining interest for real-world applications in behavioral health. An important gap in current literature is how well such models generalize over different populations. We study Natural Language Processing (NLP) based models to explore portability over two different corpora highly mismatched in age. The first and larger corpus contains younger speakers. It is used to train an NLP model to predict depression. When testing on unseen speakers from the same age distribution, this model performs at AUC=0.82. We then test this model on the second corpus, which comprises seniors from a retirement community. Despite the large demographic differences in the two corpora, we saw only modest degradation in performance for the senior-corpus data, achieving AUC=0.76. Interestingly, in the senior population, we find AUC=0.81 for the subset of patients whose health state is consistent over time. Implications for demographic portability of speech-based applications are discussed.

We discuss the proximal game and semi-proximality in $\Psi$-spaces of almost disjoint families over an infinite countable set and $\Psi$-spaces of ladder systems on $\omega_1$. We show that a semi-proximal almost disjoint families must be nowhere MAD, anti-Luzin and characterize semi-proximality for a class of ${\mathbb R}$-embeddable almost disjoint families. We show that a $\Psi$-spaces defined from a uniformizable ladder system is semi-proximal and a $\Psi$-space defined on a $\clubsuit^*$ sequence is not semi-proximal. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is pivotal in advancing mobile network systems by facilitating smart capabilities and automation. The transition from 4G to 5G has substantial implications for AI in consolidating a network predominantly geared towards business verticals. In this context, 3GPP has specified and introduced the Network Data Analytics Function (NWDAF) entity at the network's core to provide insights based on AI algorithms to benefit network orchestration. The use of the THz frequency domain in future network generations offers an unparalleled level of capacity, which can enhance innovative applications in wireless communication, analytics, and imaging. Communication technologies rely on frequency mixing, enabling signals to be converted from one frequency to another and transmitted from a sender to a receiver. Technically, this process is implemented using nonlinear components such as diodes or transistors. However, the highest operation frequency of this approach is limited to sub-THz bands. Here, we demonstrate the upconversion of a weak sub-THz signal from a photoconductive antenna to multiple THz bands. The key element is a high-mobility HgTe-based heterostructure with electronic band inversion, leading to one of the strongest third-order nonlinearities among all materials in the THz range. Due to the Dirac character of electron dispersion, the highly intense sub-THz radiation is efficiently mixed with the antenna signal, resulting in a THz response at linear combinations of their frequencies. The field conversion efficiency above 2$\%$ is provided by a bare tensile-strained HgTe layer with a thickness below 100 nm at room temperature under ambient conditions. Devices based on Dirac materials allow for high degree of integration, with field-enhancing metamaterial structures, making them very promising for THz communication with unprecedented data transfer rate., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

Combining gaseous detectors with a high-granularity pixelated charge readout enables experimental applications which otherwise could not be achieved. This includes high-resolution tracking of low-energetic particles, requiring ultra-low material budget, X-ray polarimetry at low energies ($\lessapprox$ 2 keV) or rare-event searches which profit from event selection based on geometrical parameters. In this article, the idea of embedding a pixel ASIC - specifically the Timepix4 - into a micro-pattern gaseous amplification stage is illustrated. Furthermore, the first results of reading out a triple-GEM detector with the Timepix4 (GEMPix4) are shown, including the first X-ray images taken with a Timepix4 utilising Through Silicon Vias (TSVs). Lastly, a new readout concept is presented, called the 'Silicon Readout Board', extending the use of pixel ASICs to read out gaseous detectors to a wider range of HEP applications.
