Abstract

Objective: to map the scientific knowledge about COVID-19 in older adults. Method: this is a scoping review literature review. A search was performed in the PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science and LILACS databases. Original articles that answered the guiding question were included: what scientific knowledge is available in the world about COVID-19 in older adults? Results: thirty-one articles were included, most of them carried out in China (n=23) and with a retrospective design (n=13) and case studies/case series (n=13). Based on the findings, six thematic categories emerged: clinical signs and symptoms (n=12), other information (n=9), adverse outcomes/complications resulting from COVID-19 (n=8), age relationship and greater severity of COVID-19 (n=8), variables related to death by COVID-19 (n=8), and diagnostic findings (n=8). Conclusion: the findings reinforce older adults’ greater vulnerability to the worsening of COVID-19, as well as to complications resulting from the disease, including the greater occurrence of death. Se realizó una búsqueda en las bases de datos PubMed, CINAHL, Web of Science y LILACS. Se incluyeron artículos originales que respondieron a la pregunta orientadora: ¿qué conocimiento científico está disponible en el mundo sobre el COVID-19 en los ancianos? Resultados: se incluyeron 31 artículos, la mayoría realizados en China (n=23) y con un diseño retrospectivo (n=13) y estudios de casos/series de casos (n=13). A partir de los hallazgos, surgieron seis categorías temáticas: signos y síntomas clínicos (n=12); otra información (n=9); resultados/complicaciones adversos resultantes de COVID-19 (n=8); relación de edad y mayor gravedad de COVID-19 (n=8); variables relacionadas con la muerte por COVID-19 (n=8); hallazgos diagnósticos (n=8). Conclusión: los hallazgos refuerzan la mayor vulnerabilidad de los ancianos al agravamiento del COVID-19, así como las complicaciones derivadas de la enfermedad, incluida la mayor ocurrencia de muerte. Diante da ausência de consenso científico sobre a melhor forma para mensurar o envelhecimento ativo objetivou-se descrever seus determinantes entre os idosos da Microrregião de Saúde de Uberaba e segundo sexo; mensurar a qualidade de vida (QV) dos idosos; propor um modelo estrutural de envelhecimento ativo, com base no referencial teórico da Organização Mundial de Saúde; verificar a equivalência deste modelo entre os sexos e identificar o efeito do envelhecimento ativo sobre a QV dos idosos. Estudo transversal e analítico, com 957 idosos comunitários. Procederam-se às análises: descritiva, bivariada, fatorial confirmatória e modelagem de equações estruturais. Projeto aprovado pelo Comitê de Ética em Pesquisa, parecer nº 2.053.520. Nos determinantes comportamentais a média de itens adequados, que compuseram a variável perfil antropométrico, foi de 2,83 (±0,84), sendo maior entre os homens idosos (p=0,002). Abstract

Background: Considering the interrelationship between the multiple determinants of nutritional status, analyses are needed to estimate direct and mediated effects between the variables that influence body mass index (BMI) in older adults. We aimed to verify the direct and indirect effects of sociodemographic, behavioral and health conditions on the BMI of older adults in the community., Methods: This is a longitudinal study based on data collection in 2015 and 2020. Descriptive analysis and Structural Equation Modeling were performed, considering p<0.05., Results: The sample consisted of 220 older adults with a mean baseline age of 68.86 years (± 7.10). Direct associations of higher BMI value with younger age, higher monthly family income, greater functional disability to perform instrumental activities of daily living and greater number of morbidities were found. In addition, education, gender, moderate to vigorous physical activity were indirectly associated with high BMI., Conclusion: These findings provide insights into the complex relationship of multiple determinants of nutritional status in older adults and support the design of public health policies that consider the specificities of this population group., Competing Interests: The authors have declared that no competing interests exist., (Copyright: © 2024 Camilo et al. Abstract

Objective: to analyze the association of self-reported skin color/race with biopsychosocial indicators in older adults., Method: cross-sectional study conducted with a total of 941 older adults from a health micro-region in Brazil. Data were collected at home with instruments validated for the country. Descriptive analysis and binary, multinomial and linear logistic regression (p<0.05) were performed., Results: Most older adults were self-declared white color/race (63.8%). Black color/race was a protective factor for negative (OR=0.40) and regular (OR=0.44) self-rated health perception and for the indicative of depressive symptoms (OR=0.43); and it was associated with the highest social support score (β=3.60) and the lowest number of morbidities (β=-0.78)., Conclusion: regardless of sociodemographic and economic characteristics, older adults of black color/race had the best outcomes of biopsychosocial indicators.
