Gracilariopsis E.Y. Dawson 1949 Type species: Gracilariopsis sjoestedii (Kylin) Dawson. Currently accepted name for the type species: Gracilariopsis andersonii (Grunow) Dawson. Gracilariopsis silvana C.F.D. Gurgel, Fredericq & J.N. Norris Type locality: Playa Barranquilla, Estado Falcón, Venezuela (Gurgel et al. 2003: 61). Holotype: C. F. D. Gurgel, J. E. Conde & C. Carmona FG-37; 14.vii.1999; US Alg. Coll. 204316. Figs. 16, a–e Thallus completely flattened,up to 12cm tall and 3mm wide,with several branching;dichotomously or subdichotomoulsy branched (Figs. 16, a–b), or slightly wavy, presenting a pinnate aspect with curved branchlets. Medullary region with sharp transition towards cortical region, with 5–6 layers of large hyaline medullary cells, measuring 250 μm in height and 120 μm in width; cortical region with 2 layers of cells (Fig. 16c). Tetrasporangia cruciate (Fig. 16c) embedded in the cortical region on both sides of the blade. Male gametophytes not observed. Cystocarps at different stages scattered throughout the female gametophyte main axes, with a slight constriction at the base; inner pericarp absent (Fig. 16d); gonimoblast and carposporangial chains radially organized; nutritive tubular cells not observed (Fig. 16e). Comments: Gracilariopsis silvana is the only one, among the 25 species described Gracilariopsis species, to present a flattened ribbon shaped thallus (Gurgel et al. 2003). The apical regions are wider and present more branching than other parts of the thallus, and the presence of curved branchlets easily distinguishes this species from Gracilaria species with flattened thallus. Figs. 16, f–h Thallus extremely delicate and slender cylindrical with a diameter of 0.4–0.5 mm, reaching up to 35 cm tall; numerous branches issued starting from the base, becoming sparse to absent distally (Fig. 16f). Medullary region with sharp transition to cortical region, with large hyaline cells, with up to 100 μm in diameter; cortical region with two layers of small, pigmented cells (Fig. 16g). Tetrasporangia decussate cruciate embedded in the cortical region of both sides of the blade, up to five times the size of the cortical cells (Fig. 16g). Male gametophytes not observed. Numerous and prominent cystocarps distributed throughout the thallus of female gametophytes, inner pericarp with 4–6 layers of cells; outer pericarp with 5–6 layers of cells; gonimoblast and carposporangial chains radially organized (Fig. 16h); tubular nutritive cells not observed. World distribution: Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, Cuba, Guadeloupe, Mexico, Panama, Saint Lucia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and Venezuela. Comments: Detailed morphological and anatomical descriptions of this species are found in Bird and Oliveira Filho (1986). Previously unknown free-living geniculate coralline algae (GCA) beds were found along the Arraial do Cabo Bay, Brazil. Ecological surveys have shown the importance of these algae in structuring benthic environments. The aim of this research was to identify the species of GCA commonly present in the beds of Arraial do Cabo Bay based on combining morpho-anatomical and molecular analyses. The GCA`s species identified in this study were compared based on detailed anatomical descriptions, especially the reproductive structures, with closely related species described for Brazil and worldwide. Two species belonging to the geniculate genera Amphiroa and Jania are the main components. Molecular analyses inferred from one plastid marker (psbA) combined with morpho-anatomical features led us to propose Jania cabista Tâmega, Spotorno & Peña, sp. nov., and the resurrection of Amphiroa exilis W.H. Harvey (1849) for this unique formation.

Este trabalho tem como objetivo identificar através de análises estatísticas utilizando a metodologia Kappa, possíveis correlações existentes entre análises realizadas por uma nova metodologia (milktech) e pela metodologia padrão (crioscópio) em relação a adição fraudulenta de água em leite cru ainda nos tanques de expansão das propriedades, antes da chegada ao laticínio, evitando dessa maneira inúmeros prejuízos como o financeiro e a dificuldade no descarte do produto não conforme. Para isso foi utilizado um aparelho denominado milktech e realizada concomitantemente análises no crioscópio, utilizado hoje como método padrão para detecção de fraude por adição irregular de água no leite. Foram analisadas 250 amostras. Inicialmente as análises eram realizadas com o leite recebido no laticínio, sendo analisadas pelos dois métodos (milktech e crioscópio) e anotadas em formulário especifico. Após esse período as amostras foram analisadas pelo milktech diretamente no tanque de expansão das propriedades da Zona da Mata Mineira, onde uma amostra era recolhida e levada ao laboratório para análise também no crioscópio e novamente pelo milktech, sendo os resultados anotados igualmente em formulário especifico. Com a obtenção dos resultados foi realizada uma análise estatística de correlação dos dados coletados em campo pelo programa SPSS, indicando uma correlação significativa de 0,66 (p < 0,001) para os dados obtidos no laticínio e de 0,49 (p = 0,007) também significativo para os dados obtidos direto no tanque de expansão. Para os dois casos é necessária uma equação de ajuste para estimar o que seria o verdadeiro resultado, já que a diferença média entre os pares de amostras também foi significativa, sendo -0,014 (IC 95% -0,018 a -0,010) (p

The complete SSU rDNA was sequenced for 10 individuals of Cladophora vagabunda collected along the coast of Brazil. For C. rupestris (L.) Kütz. a partial SSU rDNA sequence (1634 bp) was obtained. Phylogenetic trees indicate that Cladophora is paraphyletic, but the section Glomeratae sensu lato including C. vagabunda from Brazil, Japan and France, C. albida (Nees) Kütz., C. sericea (Hudson) Kütz., and C. glomerata (L.) Kütz. is monophyletic. Within this group C. vagabunda is paraphyletic. The sequence identity for the SSU rDNA varied from 98.9% to 100% for the Brazilian C. vagabunda, and from 98.3% to 99.7% comparing the Brazilian individuals to the ones from France and Japan. Sequence identity of the Brazilian C. vagabunda to C. albida and C. sericea vary from 98.0% to 98.6%. The SSU rDNA phylogeny support partially the morphological characteristics presented by Brazilian populations of C. vagabunda. On the other hand, C. rupestris from Brazil does not group with C. rupestris from France, both sequences presenting only 96.9% of identity. The inclusion of sequences of individuals from Brazil reinforces the need of taxonomical revision for the genus Cladophora and for the complex C. vagabunda. A seqüência completa do SSU rDNA foi obtida para 10 indivíduos de Cladophora vagabunda coletadas ao longo da costa do Brasil. Uma seqüência parcial do SSU rDNA (1634 bp) foi obtida para C. rupestris (L.) Kütz. As árvores filogenéticas indicam que Cladophora é parafilético, mas a seção Glomeratae sensu lato compreendendo C. vagabunda do Brasil, Japão e França, C. albida (Nees) Kütz., C. sericea (Hudson) Kütz. e C. glomerata (L.) Kütz., é monofilética. Dentro deste grupo, C. vagabunda é parafilética. A identidade da seqüência para o SSU rDNA variou de 98,9% à 100% para C. vagabunda brasileira e de 98,3% a 99,7% quando comparados os indivíduos brasileiros aos da França e do Japão. A identidade da seqüência entre C. vagabunda brasileira e as duas outras espécies (C. albida e C. sericea) variou entre 98,0% e 98,6%. A filogenia do SSU rDNA suporta parcialmente as caracteristícas morfológicas apresentadas pelas populações brasileiras de C. vagabunda. Por outro lado, C. rupestris do Brasil não se agrupou a C. rupestris da França, as duas seqüências apresentaram somente 96,9% de identidade. A inclusão de seqüências de indivíduos do Brasil reforçam a necessidade de uma revisão taxonômica para o gênero Cladophora e para o complexo C. vagabunda.
