Abstract

A análise das características formalmente inovadoras do romance Xerazade e os Outros, de Fernanda Botelho uma das obras que, publicadas nas décadas de 50 e 60 do século XX, ajudaram a afastar definitivamente o romance português da sua herança oitocentista revela a utilização de técnicas narrativas que permitem a sua inclusão no vasto cânone modernista. Considerando as propostas que, a nível internacional, sugerem a delimitação de um período específico referente à literatura produzidas entre as décadas de 1950 e 1970, o presente texto propõe que se encare a obra de Fernanda Botelho como representante do modernismo tardio, nomeadamente dado o desdobramento narrativo instituído no cerne da obra, manifestação de uma dialéctica entre a forma e o conteúdo inassimilável que autores como Fredric Jameson consideram a principal marca do período

23. The effect of dye-polymer interactions on the kinetics of the isomerization of 4-dimethylaminoazobenzene and mercury dithizonate

Abstract

Thermal and photo-isomerization reactions of mercury dithizonate and 4-dimethylaminoazobenzene were studied in solutions and in polymer matrices. We used exponential functions to calculate the rate constants for both processes. The kinetic behavior was well described by mono-exponential functions for these dyes dissolved in solvents, although bi-exponential functions are required when these dyes are dissolved in polymers. The rate constants are strongly influenced by dye/solvent and dye/polymer interactions, as well as by the aging processes of the polymer matrix. In general, the reaction is faster in more polar mediums, solvents or polymer matrices, since stabilization of different tautomers takes place. We also showed that larger molecules isomerize slowly and slower isomerization has also been observed for annealed samples. Both results are attributed to the importance of free-volumes in polymeric matrices.

Abstract

Police radar is known to have an effect on the speed of drivers. This effect derives from the presence of vehicles equipped with radar detectors in the traffic stream and the reactions that the drivers of these vehicles have to radar. The level of impact on a traffic stream exposed to radar transmissions is a function of the proportion of radar detector equipped vehicles in the traffic stream, i.e., the radar detector density. Microscopic simulation can be used to model this impact. A microscopic simulator extension is proposed that allows determinations of this type to be carried out by adding the capability to model driver response to radar transmissions. This approach can also be applied to the modeling of other driver warning technologies such as changeable message signs. A case study using the proposed methodology to analyze different congestion and radar detector density levels is presented and discussed. The case study shows that the efficacy of using radar as a speed reduction strategy is a function of congestion and radar detector density, with the strategy being most effective for volumes levels between 200 and 1,400 vehicles per hour per lane. Abstract

A podridão do colo, causada por Sclerotium rolfsii, é uma importante doença do feijão-fava (Phaseolus lunatus) no Nordeste brasileiro. O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a reação de genótipos de feijão-fava a S. rolfsii, visando selecionar materiais com potencial de utilização no manejo da podridão do colo. Na primeira etapa, 50 genótipos de feijão-fava foram avaliados em relação a um isolado de S. rolfsii. Plantas com 10 dias de idade foram inoculadas pelo método de ferimento do colo e deposição do escleródio do patógeno. A incidência da doença foi avaliada 10 dias após a inoculação. A maioria dos genótipos (60%) se comportou como altamente suscetível ao patógeno, enquanto 36% foram classificadas como suscetíveis. Somente dois genótipos (F-2 e F-25) se comportaram como altamente resistentes, correspondendo a 4% do total. A estabilidade da resistência destes dois genótipos foi avaliada em relação a 11 isolados de S. rolfsii, sendo que ambos apresentaram nível de resistência satisfatório, constituindo fontes promissoras de resistência à podridão do colo. The collar rot caused by Sclerotium rolfsii is an important disease in faba bean (Phaseolus lunatus) at the Northeastern Brazil. The objective of this work was to evaluate the reaction of faba bean genotypes to S. rolfsii in order to select materials with potential use in the collar rot management. In the first step, 50 faba bean genotypes were evaluated in relation to an isolate of S. rolfsii. Ten-day old plants were inoculated by the collar injury method and deposition of sclerotia of the pathogen. Disease incidence was assessed 10 days after inoculation. Most genotypes (60%) behaved as highly susceptible to the pathogen, while 36% were classified as susceptible. Only two genotypes (F-2 and F-25) behaved as highly resistant, representing 4% of the total. The stability of resistance of these two genotypes was evaluated against 11 isolates of S. rolfsii, both of them showing satisfactory level of resistance, constituting promising sources of resistance to collar rot.
