This study aimed to compare two-dimensional radiographs and cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images for mini-implant planning.A search was performed in PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Cochrane Library and Google Scholar electronic databases according to PIRD strategy, on September 11, 2021. In vivo studies that compared two-dimensional imaging with CBCT for mini-implant planning were selected. The methodological quality of each study was assessed using the QUADAS-2 tool.The initial search identified 441 papers. Five studies were added following a manual research. Of the total 446 studies, 40 were selected after title evaluation, 29 remained after abstract evaluation, and 11 were left after full-text analysis. Final screening yielded a total of four studies that composed the narrative synthesis of this systematic review. When comparing the imaging systems for palatal mini-implants, lateral radiographs (LRs) showed approximately the same measurements of bone quantity as those of CBCT, hence bearing no influence on placement site selection. In determining image suitability for interradicular mini-implants, two-dimensional radiographs underestimated the available space.Lateral radiography is sufficient to quantify the available bone for planning mini-implants installed on the palate, in the median region of upper first premolars. CBCT enhances interradicular mini-implant planning by aiding in implantation site selection, and improving the installation success rate.

Flipped classroom (FC) is becoming increasingly popular among medical educators and has several ideal applications. However, its utilization in medical education revealing conflicting results among previous studies. The main purpose of this overview is to summarize published systematic reviews (SRs) and meta-analysis on FC in medical education in order to identify its impacts on learning outcomes and student’s perceptions. A systematic search will be conducted in databases: PubMed/Medline, Embase, Scopus, ERIC, Web of Science, Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews and LILACS. Grey literature will be searched on Open Grey, ProQuest Dissertations and Theses Database and Google Scholar. SRs and meta-analysis which assessed the impact of FC on academic outcomes and student’s perceptions were included. Two authors independently will collected descriptive characteristics of studies, as well as positive impacts and challenges associated with FC. Overall confidence of SRs will be assessed using the AMSTAR 2 tool.

Studies have evaluated laypersons' perceptions of different appliances, however, to date, there is no systematic review gathering the findings of primary studies on this subject. The results of the present review may be useful to inform orthodontists about their patients' perceptions and to define possible orthodontic treatments, aiming at greater patient’s cooperation and satisfaction outcomes. This systematic review has been guided by the focused question: “Is there a difference in the perceptions of children, adolescents and adults about orthodontic appliances?”

The present study aimed to verify the absence of patients with special needs in three Regional Dental Specialties Centers (CEO-R), located in the Cariri region. The data were obtained through the Integrated Health Management System in Ceará. In order to verify the association between distance and number of absences, Pearson's correlation analysis was performed and to describe the geographic pattern of the occurrence of absences, thematic maps were built based on the distributions of the absentee rates. When correlating the variables, there is a statistically significant correlation for distance and percentage of absences (p = 0.003) distance and scheduled patients (p = 0.025), distance and confirmed patients (p = 0.018) and distance and completed treatments (p = 0.016). It can be concluded that patients 'absences do not occur seasonally and that the distance to the CEO can be a predictor that presented a positive correlation and strong association with patients' absenteeism. El presente estudio tuvo como objetivo verificar la no asistencia de pacientes con necesidades especiales en tres Centros Regionales de Especialidades Dentales (CEO-R), ubicados en la región de Cariri. Los datos se obtuvieron a través del Sistema Integrado de Gestión Sanitaria de Ceará. Para verificar la asociación entre la distancia y el número de ausencias, se realizó el análisis de correlación de Pearson y para describir el patrón geográfico de la ocurrencia de ausencias, se construyeron mapas temáticos basados ​​en las distribuciones de las tasas de ausencias. Cuando las variables están correlacionadas, existe una correlación estadísticamente significativa para la distancia y el porcentaje de ausencias (p = 0.003) distancia y pacientes programados (p = 0.025), distancia y pacientes confirmados (p = 0.018) y distancia completa y tratamientos (p = 0,016). Se puede concluir que las ausencias de los pacientes no ocurren estacionalmente y que la distancia al CEO puede ser un predictor que mostró una correlación positiva y una fuerte asociación con el absentismo de los pacientes. O presente estudo teve por objetivo verificar o não comparecimento dos pacientes com necessidades especiais em três Centros de Especialidades Odontológicas Regionais (CEO-R), localizados na região do Cariri. Os dados foram obtidos através do Sistema Integrado de Gestão em Saúde do Ceará. A fim de verificar associação entre distância e número de faltas foi realizada análise de correlação de Pearson e para descrever o padrão geográfico da ocorrência de faltas, foram construídos mapas temáticos baseados nas distribuições das taxas de faltas. Ao se correlacionar as variáveis, verifica-se correlação estatisticamente significativa para distância e percentual de faltas (p=0.003) distância e pacientes agendados (p=0.025), distância e pacientes confirmados (p=0.018) e distância e tratamentos concluídos (p=0.016). Pode-se concluir que a as faltas dos pacientes não ocorre de modo sazonal e que a distância até o CEO pode ser um preditor que apresentou correlação positiva e forte associação com o absenteísmo dos pacientes.

The aim of this study was to evaluate different teaching strategies to improve the knowledge of dental students about prescribing standards. We evaluated 72 students who were randomly separated into 3 groups (n = 24): Group 1 - at each evaluation stage, an explanatory video about prescription rules was presented; Group 2 - the same video was made available on a virtual platform (with unlimited access); Group 3 - control: the students did not have additional activities on the subject. During the study period 4 evaluations were performed, and all participants received a different clinical case to carry out a prescription for the proposed clinical situation. For each prescription performed, a score was given to different items: identification of professional and patient, concentration, dosage and quantity of the medicine, instructions, among others. The results were submitted to statistical analysis and the level of significance was set at 5%. No significant differences were observed at baseline between groups (p> 0.05). However, after using the strategies better results were observed for G1 when compared with G2 and G3 (p0,05). Buccal bifurcation cyst is an unusual inflammatory odontogenic cyst of unknown etiology which occurs at the buccal region of the permanent mandibular first molars in children and adolescents aged 6-15 years old. The aim of this manuscript is to present two clinical cases of buccal bifurcation cyst incidentally detected in adolescents referred for tomographic exams (CBCT) as part of the treatment planning for the management of impacted mandibular molars. The first case is very interesting due to the proximity of the lesion to the inferior alveolar canal. In the second case the inferior alveolar canal was not in close proximity to the lesion, but in contact with the mesiobuccal root of the second molar. The diagnosis of Buccal bifurcation cyst is of utmost importance in order to avoid complications during surgical procedures. In addition, the present case reports have highlighted the importance for dental practitioners to be aware of the possibility of a buccal bifurcation cyst being present as an incidental finding in CBCT images, especially in young patients.

RESUMO O cisto da bifurcação vestibular é uma lesão odontogênica inflamatória, incomum e de etiologia desconhecida que ocorre na região vestibular de primeiros molares permanentes inferiores em crianças e adolescentes na faixa etária de 6-15 anos. O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar dois casos clínicos de cisto da bifurcação vestibular detectados incidentalmente em imagens de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico de adolescentes, indicadas como parte do tratamento e avaliação de terceiros molares inferiores impactados. O primeiro caso relatado é bastante interessante devido à presença de cisto de bifurcação bucal ter proximidade com o canal mandibular. No segundo caso o canal alveolar inferior não estava próximo da lesão, mas em contato com a raiz mésio-vestibular do segundo molar. O diagnóstico da bifurcação vestibular é de grande relevância para evitar possíveis complicações durante a realização de cirurgias. Os casos relatados destacam a importância para os cirurgiões-dentistas estarem cientes da possibilidade de um Cisto da bifurcação vestibular estar presente como um achado incidental em imagens de tomografia computadorizada de feixe cônico, especialmente em pacientes jovens.

Dentists should be prepared to manage eventual medical emergencies that occur in the dental practice. However, many dentists are not fully prepared to manage these situations and have insufficient experience training in medical emergencies. The aim of this paper is to report the experience of educational activities using a high-fidelity simulator in different scenarios in order to prepare dental professionals for medical emergencies in the dental clinic. This methodology allows discussion in the debriefing room regarding the main techniques and procedures to be performed in clinical practice in cases of emergencies and training of dentists to meet these situations. It can be concluded that high-fidelity simulation represents an innovative learning scenario and it is an effective educational method to prepare dental professionals for medical emergencies. Os cirurgiões-dentistas devem estar preparados para eventuais situações de emergências médicas que podem ocorrer durante o atendimento odontológico. Entretanto, muitos profissionais não se sentem preparados para executar estes procedimentos e têm pouca experiência em treinamentos práticos. Desta forma, o objetivo deste artigo é relatar a experiência de uma atividade de simulação em diferentes cenários de emergências médicas na prática odontológica. Esta metodologia envolve o uso de um simulador de alta fidelidade e permite a discussão na sala de debriefing sobre os principais procedimentos e treinamento prático para o manejo de emergências médicas. A simulação de alta fidelidade realística para o ensino de emergências médicas na prática odontológica representa um cenário inovador e é eficaz para o processo de ensino e aprendizagem.

Goldenhar Syndrome is a rare, generally sporadic condition, whose physical manifestations include asymmetric incomplete facial development, epibulbar dermoids, auricular malformations e auricular appendices, vertebral anomalies, central nervous system disturbances, ocular irregularities and visceral abnormalities. Its etiology is not fully understood, with its incidence ranging from 1:3500 to 1:5600 live births, and a gender ratio of 3:2 (male: female), presenting more frequently in children with congenital deafness. The purpose of this case report was to describe clinical presentation of Goldenhar syndrome in a five-year old male with no significant family history, where almost all of the classic signs of the condition were present. Considering its involvement in craniofacial structures, its rarity, and its wide spectrum of symptoms and associated systemic abnormalities, knowledge of this condition is paramount for the dental surgeon. RESUMO A Síndrome de Goldenhar é rara e suas principais manifestações físicas incluem assimetria e desenvolvimento facial incompleto, tumores dermoides epibulbares, malformações na orelha e apêndices auriculares, anomalias vertebrais, distúrbios no sistema nervoso central, irregularidades oculares e anomalias viscerais. A etiologia desta condição não é claramente esclarecida e apresenta-se geneticamente variável. A incidência da Síndrome de Goldenhar pode variar de 1:3500 até 1:5600 nascidos vivos e relação por sexo de 3:2 (masculino: feminino), apresentando mais frequentemente em crianças com surdez congênita. O objetivo deste trabalho é apresentar um caso clínico de Síndrome de Goldenhar em paciente infantil de 5 anos de idade do sexo masculino, sem história familiar relevante relacionada à síndrome e que apresenta características claras desta condição. Considerando o envolvimento das estruturas craniofaciais da Síndrome de Goldenhar, sua raridade e o amplo espectro de sintomas e anormalidades sistêmicas associadas, o conhecimento desta condição é primordial para o cirurgião-dentista.

The aim of this paper is to describe a case report of EMP in an HIV-positive patient. A 44-year-old, dark-skinned HIV-infected woman was referred to the Oral Diseases Treatment Center with a swelling at palate and left gingival fornix in the maxilla. Biopsy was taken and the oral lesion was diagnosed as EMP with well-differentiated plasma cells and restriction of the lambda light-chain. Skeletal survey was performed and no radiograph alterations were observed, thus supporting the diagnosis of EMP. Patient was referred to treatment and after two months of chemo and radiotherapy, an expanding lesion was observed in L5/S1 patient’s vertebrae. Biopsy of the spinal lesion was consistent with lymphoma with plasmocitary differentiation, supporting the diagnosis of multiple myeloma (MM). Regarding the medical history, the final diagnostic was an oral extramedullary plasmacytoma with rapid progression into multiple myeloma. It is crucial to emphasize the relevance of HIV infection as a risk factor for both aggressive clinical behavior and unusual clinical presentation of extramedullary plasmacytoma cases.
