Abstract

Inundations in Amazonian black‐water river floodplain result in the selection of different tree lineages, thus promoting coexistence between species. We investigated whether Amazonian tree communities are phylogenetically structured and distributed along a flooding gradient from irregularly flooded forests along streams embedded within upland (terra‐firme) forest to seasonally flooded floodplains of large rivers (igapós). Floristic inventories and hydrological monitoring were performed along the Falsino River, a black‐water river in the eastern Amazon within the Amapá National Forest. We constructed a presence‐and‐absence matrix and generated a phylogeny using the vascular plant database available in GenBank. We calculated the standardized values of the metrics of phylogenetic diversity (ses.PD), average phylogenetic distance (ses.MPD), and average nearest‐neighbor distance (ses.MNTD) to test whether the history of relationships between species in the community is influenced by inundation. We used the phylogenetic endemism (PE) metric to verify the existence of taxa with restricted distribution. Linear regressions were used to test whether phylogenetic metrics have a significant relationship with the variables: maximum flood height, maximum water table depth, and maximum flood amplitude. The results show that forests subject to prolonged seasonal flooding have reduced taxon richness, low phylogenetic diversity, and random distribution of lineages within communities. On the other hand, terra‐firme riparian forests showed higher rates of taxon richness, diversity, and phylogenetic dispersion, in addition to greater phylogenetic endemism. These results indicate that seasonal and predictable soil flooding filters tree lineages along the hydrographic gradient. Different adaptations to root waterlogging are likely requirements for colonization in these environments and may represent an important factor in the diversification of tree lineages in the Amazon biome. Abstract

Variations in environmental conditions along gradients play an important role in species distribution through environmental filtering of morphological and physiological traits; however, their effects on bat diversity remain poorly understood. Here, we investigate the effect of the distance to the nearest watercourse, terrain elevation, vegetation clutter, basal area and canopy height on taxonomic, functional and phylogenetic diversity and on the predominance of some functional traits (body mass, wing morphology and trophic level) of bat assemblages (phyllostomid and mormoopid bats) in a terra firme forest, in the northeastern Brazilian Amazon. We captured bats using mist nets in 15 permanent plots over a 25 km2 area of continuous forest. We captured 279 individuals belonging to 28 species with a total of 77.760 m2.h of sampling effort. Our results showed that bat richness increases as a function of distance to the nearest watercourse and that the assemblage also changes, with more diverse taxonomic and functional groups in areas further from the watercourse. Furthermore, elevation positively affects species richness, and the basal area of the forest positively influences the average body mass of bats. Taken together, our results demonstrate that subtle variations in the environmental conditions along a local scale gradient impact on the main dimensions of bat diversity in primary forests. Abstract

Seed transport by hydrochory is a key mechanism of long‐distance dispersal constrained by attributes of the seed and hydrodynamics of the river, influenced by seasonal precipitation and hydrological pulses. However, the extent to which a hydrodynamic model can predict seed dispersal influenced by a tributary is unknown.The study was conducted along a 10‐km stretch of the Falsino River in Amapá, Brazil. Hydrodynamic parameters from the 2021 rainy season were used to calibrate a three‐dimensional numerical model (SisBaHia) and simulate hydrochory of Macrolobium bifolium, a widely distributed species in the Amazon floodplains. This model was coupled with a Lagrangian dispersal model to estimate the average transport distance of the fruit plume. The simulated results were compared statistically with those of dispersal quantified in the field.The field experiment coincided with the maximum hydrological pulse, providing with a maximum potential distance of longitudinal dispersal fruit of c. 10 km in 2 hr. The orders of magnitude of the mean plume transport (observed and numerically simulated centre of mass) were compatible with each other over six longitudinal tracking sections (4.0% ≤ estimated × observed error ≤ 16.5%). Different channel stretches had distinct hydraulic characteristics that influenced spatial dispersal dynamics and are likely to be factors influencing the distribution of M. bifolium in these environments.The present research is a contribution to understanding fluvial hydrodynamics and hydrochory by M. bifolium, whose seed dispersal syndrome is an adaptive characteristic that might explain its abundance and richness in these Amazonian riparian zones. O presente trabalho foi realizado na Estação Cientifica Ferreira Penna, na Floresta Nacional de Caxiuanã, Melgaço, Pará, Brasil (01º 42' 30"S; 51º 31' 45"W; 60 m altitude) no Leste da Amazônia. É uma área com floresta de terra firme, vegetação densa e dossel com altura média de 35 m e algumas árvores emergentes acima de 50 m, e densidade variando de 450 a 550 árvores por hectare. Os objetivos foram de quantificar as estimativas da interceptação por modelagens numéricas, no período de março a dezembro de 2004. A interceptação obtida nas medidas de campo foi de 248 mm, correspondendo a 21,5% da precipitação total incidente acima do dossel de 1.153,4 mm. As estimativas de interceptação foram simuladas com bom nível de eficiência, utilizando os modelos de Rutter e Gash. O modelo de Gash superestimou a interceptação em 17,3% (42,8 mm) do total acumulado, enquanto o modelo de Rutter superestimou em apenas 0,5% (1,1 mm) do total acumulado da interceptação. The present work was carried out in the Ferreira Penna Scientific Station, at the Caxiuanã National Forest in Melgaço, Pará, Brazil (01º 42' 30" S; 51º 31'45" W; 60 m of altitude) in the EasternAmazonia. It is an upland forest area with closed vegetation, 35 m average canopy high, some emergent trees with 50 m high and species density between 450 and 550 plants per hectare. The objective was to compare the estimations of rainfall interception using two numerical models, for the period from March to December of 2004. The measured rainfall interception was 248 mm corresponding to 21.5% of total precipitation (1,153.4 mm) above canopy. The rainfall interception was simulated, by Rutter's and Gash's models, at good level of accuracy. The Gash model overestimated the interception by 17.3% (42.8 mm), while the Rutter model overestimated by only 0.5% (1.1 mm) of the observed interception.

O estudo revelou a precipitação efetiva de 905,4 mm e precipitação interna de 885,4 mm, um escoamento pelos troncos de 20 mm, e interceptação de 248 mm, correspondendo, a 78,5%, 76,8%, 1,7% e 21,5% da precipitação total incidente acima do dossel, que foi de 1153,4 mm, no período de estudo, respectivamente. As estimativas de interceptação foram simuladas com bom nível de eficiência, utilizando os modelos de Rutter e Gash. The aims were to measure the precipitation above canopy, net precipitation, throughfall, stemflow and rain interception, the seasonal variability during rainy and drought periods and estimations for numerical modelling, from March to December of 2004. For the throughfall measurements were used 25 rain gauges randomly distributed into the one hectare area subdivided in 100 parcels of 10 x 10 m, while the stemflow were measured at 7 trees with stem diameter at breast height representative of the area. Studies results showed values of net precipitation of 905.4 mm, throughfall of 885.4 mm, stemflow 20 mm and rain interception of 248 mm corresponding respectively to 78.5%, 76.8%, 1.7% e 21.5% of total precipitation above canopy which was 1153.4 mm for the studied period. The rain interception estimations were simulated within a good level using Rutter´s and Gash´s models. The Gash model overestimated in 17.3% (42.8 mm) for accumulated rain interception while the Rutter model overestimated only 0.5% (1.1 mm) for accumulated rain interception, both from March to December of 2004.
