Abstract

This paper presents the modelling and design steps of a digital proportional multi-resonant controller used in a grid-connected photovoltaic (PV) system. It is shown that the use of only one Proportional-Resonant (PR) compensator, tuned to the system fundamental frequency, may have its effectiveness compromised due to nonlinearities in the system components. To overcome this drawback and improve the system's output current waveform, a multi-resonant controller is introduced. The performance of the discrete-time designed controller is tested on a grid-connected photovoltaic power plant. Experimental results obtained with the operation of a 30 kWp PV system connected to a distribution network, using only the leakage inductances of a connection transformer as passive filter are presented and discussed to demonstrate the performance of the designed control strategy.

Abstract

An expansion is planned for the underground operation at Caraiba copper mine to extend its life beyond 1998. Extension to 2003 is envisaged exploiting a mineable reserve of 6 000 000 tons of ore, or, with backfilling, extension to 2006 with a mineable reserve of 10 500 000 tons. Exploitation of reserves beneath the currently-worked panel will involve the use of drilling and blasting with large diameter holes and of vertical crater retreat methods, with access and extraction via a new ramp. Abstract

Hypertension is one of the main side-effects of long-term therapy with ciclosporin. However, the influence of salt intake on the 24-h mean blood pressure of patients with psoriasis treated with ciclosporin is not known.To evaluate, in patients with psoriasis, the sodium sensitivity of the ciclosporin-induced rise in blood pressure.The 24-h ambulatory blood pressure was evaluated in 13 patients with psoriasis (age range 20–57 years) in two phases, before (phase I) and after the completion of 4 months of therapy with ciclosporin 3 mg kg−1 daily (phase II). In both phases, the patients were studied in conditions of low sodium (LS) intake followed by a high sodium (HS) diet.Twenty-four-hour mean± SD blood pressure during LS and HS intake was, respectively, 86·3 ± 1·6 mmHg and 85·5 ± 1·8 mmHg during phase I, and 88·5 ± 1·5 mmHg and 91·8 ± 2·2 mmHg (P < 0·001 vs. phase I, HS;P < 0·05 vs. phase II, LS) during phase II. The median (interquartile range) sodium sensitivity index was greater during phase II than during phase I:− 0·0028 (− 0·0071 to 0·0009) vs. 0·0065 (– 0·0055 to 0·0258) (P < 0·02). The plasma levels and the daily urinary excretion of noradrenaline did not differ between phases I and II.The ciclosporin-induced rise in blood pressure is sodium sensitive. It is also suggested that sympathetic activation is not involved in the pathogenesis of ciclosporin-induced rise in blood pressure. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Bean plants Phaseolus vulgarisL. (cv. Carioca and Negro Huasteco) and Vigna unguiculataL. Walp (cv. Epace-10) were grown in a growth chamber with a photosynthetic photon flux density of 200 μmol m−2s−1at leaf level and air temperature of 25+1 °C. Fully expanded, first pair leaves of 12-d-old plants were submitted for 90 min to high temperature (25, 30, 35, 40, 45, and 48 °C). Chlorophyll afluorescence parameters (ETR, qP, qN, and F0) were investigated using a modulated fluorimeter at 25 °C during recovery considered here as 48 h after stress induction period. An accentuated decrease in qPand an increase in qNat 48 °C in Carioca and Negro Huasteco was not observed in Epace-10. In response to excitation irradiance a great potential for ETR was found in Negro Huasteco at 25 °C, also demonstrated by net photosynthetic rate. At 48 °C ETR was high for Epace-10 while it was equal to zero for Carioca and Negro Huasteco. Tolerance to high temperature observed in Epace-10 provided important information about the adaptative characteristics of Vignacultivars to warm climates.

46. Identification of Circulating Micromegakaryocytes in a Case of Refractory Anemia: An Electron Microscopic-Cytochemical Study

Abstract

In a case of refractory anemia with an excess of myeloblasts in the bone marrow and with thrombocytopenia, examinations of the blood cells under the electron microscope have revealed nucleated cells similar in size to small lymphocytes. Some of these lymphocytelike cells have scanty cytoplasm identical to that of giant platelets present in the blood, which are pathologic in view of their highly developed system of membranes. In the perinuclear space and in short segments of the smooth endoplasmic reticulum, these blood micromegakaryocytes exhibit a peroxidase activity that is identical to that of mature megakaryocytes of normal bone marrow. They also spread over glass like giant platelets. In the past these nucleated cells could well have been confused with atypical lymphocytes, because on stained slides their atypical appearance makes identification difficult.

47. Implication of the Caraiba deposit's structural controls on the emplacement of the Cu-bearing hypersthenites of the Curaca Valley, Bahia, Brazil.

Abstract

The deposit is a Lower Proterozoic sill consisting of magnetite-bearing hypersthenites, melanorites and norites with disseminated chalcopyrite and bornite mineralisation, the largest of hundreds of mafic-ultramafic bodies in the Curaca Valley high-grade metamorphic terrane. It forms a N-S-trending, tightly isoclinal and asymmetric F3 synform, with 1 000 m amplitude and axial plane dipping W at 70-75 degrees, in the western limb of a normal regional antiform. The interference pattern of F3 with E-W-trending F2 folds gives the deposit a 5 km long and 800 m wide mushroom shape. Brittle fracturing and boudinage disrupted the orebody throughout its structural evolution, so mine planning and underground exploitation are difficult in parts of the mine.
