6. Hybrid Model in Accounting Education: The Experience of Management Simulation Course

Abstract

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and its effects on education, he transformation of didactics and technological methods was necessary to promote students' self-learning and motivation, alongside teachers' tutoring, guiding students' academic journey. This paper aims to investigate the effect of COVID-19 on digitalization accounting in higher education and explores the students' perception of the adapted hybrid model. The study follows a qualitative approach and rely on the final-year students of the accounting and management degree of Accounting and Business of Porto Polytechnic School. Data were collected through a questionnaire from students who experienced both distance and face-to-face education and completed the course of Management Simulation. The study highlights the digitalization of accounting teaching and the pandemic's effect on the future of digital accounting education. In sum, the hybrid model meets the needs of this practical course and can be a model to be applied in the future.

16. Metabolomic response of osteosarcoma cells to nanographene oxide-mediated hyperthermia

Abstract

Nanographene oxide (nGO)-mediated hyperthermia has been increasingly investigated as a localised, minimally invasive anticancer therapeutic approach. Near InfraRed (NIR) light irradiation for inducing hyperthermia is particularly attractive, because biological systems mostly lack chromophores that absorb in this spectral window, facilitating the selective heating and destruction of cells which have internalized the NIR absorbing-nanomaterials. However, little is known about biological effects accompanying nGO-mediated hyperthermiaat cellular and molecular levels.In this work, well-characterised pegylatednGOsheets with an hydrodynamic size of 300 nm were incubated with human Saos-2 osteosarcoma cells for 24h and their incorporation verified by flow cytometry and confocal microscopy. No effect on cell viability was observed after nGO incorporation by Saos-2 cells. However, a proliferation delay was observed due to the presence of nGO sheets in the cytoplasm.1H NMR metabolomicswas employed to screen for changes in the metabolic profile of cells, as this could help to improve understanding of celular responses to nanomaterials and provide new endpoint markers of effect.Cells incorporating nGO sheets showed noticeable changes in 10 metabolites compared to control cells, including decreased levels of several amino acids, taurine and creatine and increased levels of phosphocholine and uridine/adenosine nucleotides. After NIR irradiation, cells showed decreases in glutamate and uridine nulceotides, together with increases in glycerophosphocholine and adenosine monophosphate. Overall, this study has shown that the celular metabolome sensitively responded to nGO exposure and nGO-mediated hyperthermia and that NMR metabolomics is a powerful tool toinvestigate treatment responses., Comment: 37 pages

37. Syllable Effects in Beginning and Intermediate European-Portuguese Readers: Evidence from a Sandwich Masked Go/No-Go Lexical Decision Task

Abstract

Reading is one of the most important milestones a child achieves throughout development. Above the letter level, the syllable has been shown to play a relevant role at early stages of visual word recognition in adult skilled readers. However, studies aiming to examine when, during reading acquisition, the syllable emerges as a functional sublexical unit are scarce, and the studies conducted so far have led to inconsistent results. In this work, beginning and intermediate European-Portuguese (EP) developing readers performed a sandwich masked lexical decision task in which CV (e.g., RU.MOR[rumour]) and CVC (e.g., CIS.NE[swan]) first-syllable EP words were preceded either by syllable congruent (e.g., rum.ba-RU.MOR, cis.ra-CIS.NE), syllable incongruent (e.g., rum.ba-RU.MOR, ci.ser-CIS.NE), unrelated (e.g., va.cra-RU.MOR, zar.vo-CIS.NE) pseudowords primes, or identity (e.g., ru.mour-RU.MOUR, cis.ne-CIS.NE) primes. Results showed reliable syllable effects only for intermediate readers and for CV and CVC words alike. Findings are discussed attending to current models of visual word recognition.

38. The Mirror Reflects More for 'Genial' than for 'Casual': Right-Asymmetry Bias on the Visual Word Recognition of Words Containing Non-Reversal Letters

Abstract

Soares, Lages, Oliveira, and Cabrera-Hernández (2019) recently showed that the mirror-letter interference effect observed for words containing reversal letters was reliable for words containing left-oriented mirror-letters as 'd', but not for words containing right-oriented mirror-letters as 'b', thus indicating that the directionality of the reversal letters cannot be disregarded when examining the cost of suppressing the mirror-generalization mechanism at the early stages of visual word recognition. Here we examined whether this bias can also be observed for left-oriented non-reversal letters such as 'g', 'j', and 'z', which just as 'd' are also prone to errors in writing in left-to-right orthographies as European Portuguese (EP). Thirty-six EP skilled readers performed a lexical decision task combined with a masked-priming paradigm in which target words containing either left-oriented (e.g., 'g', genial) or right-oriented (e.g., 'c', casual) non-reversal letters were preceded by 50 ms primes that could be the same as the target (genial-genial, casual-casual), nonword primes in which the critical letter was replaced by the mirror-image of the left- or right-oriented non-reversal letter ([reverse g]enial-genial, [reverse c]asual-casual), or nonword primes in which the critical letter was replaced by the mirror-image of another left-oriented or right-oriented non-reversal letter as control ([character omitted]enial-genial, [character omitted]asual-casual). Results showed that the amount of priming produced by identity primes and mirror-image primes was virtually the same for words with left-oriented (e.g., genial-genial = [reverse g]enial-genial), but not for words with right-oriented non-reversal letters (e.g., casual-casual > [reverse c]asual-casual), hence extending the right-oriented bias observed for words containing reversal letters to words containing non-reversal letters.

Abstract

In a context of global changes, a foresight study is helpful to look into the future, anticipate possible scenarios and take appropriate decisions to face emerging risks for food and feed safety. Considering that an increased use of the ocean is expected for the next decades, it is essential to explore its possible impact on the safety of food and feed from the oceans. A scoping study was carried out to analyse drivers of change that may impact/promote the future uses of the ocean and its resources. From bibliographic search, different ocean uses were identified: coastal and open‐sea mining, marine aquaculture, sea transport and trade, energy production and related infrastructures, fisheries, ocean crops, saline farming, desalination, extraction of bioresources, marine protected areas and conservation of the ocean. Through the information gathered in the scoping study and the input of several experts, three key ocean uses were prioritised to proceed to a participatory foresight exercise: (i) coastal and open‐sea mining; (ii) marine aquaculture; and (iii) sea transport and trade. The foresight exercise produced three possible scenarios for 2050 for each prioritised use of the ocean. On the basis of these scenarios, possible implications and potential emerging issues for the safety of food and feed from the oceans were identified and characterised through bibliographic data. This document also provides a description of the methodology followed in the scoping study and in the foresight exercise, and recommendations that could help EFSA to prepare to the challenges posed by the future exploitation of ocean resources.
