Abstract

BACKGROUND: Poly(ϵ‐caprolactone) nanocapsules (NC + ATZ) are an efficient carrier system for atrazine and were developed as an alternative to reduce the harmful environmental effects of this herbicide. Here, we analyzed the pre‐emergence herbicidal activity of NC + ATZ against Bidens pilosa and evaluated its residual effect on soybean plants after different periods of soil treatment with the formulations. RESULTS: In contrast to non‐nanoatrazine, NC + ATZ treatment led to very high mortality rates of B. pilosa seedlings even after a tenfold dilution, which suggests that atrazine nanoencapsulation improved its pre‐emergence herbicidal activity. In a short‐term assay (17 days), soil treatment with all atrazine‐containing formulations resulted in intense toxicity to soybean plants. NC + ATZ at 200 g ha−1 had the same inhibitory effects on the physiological and growth parameters of soybean plants compared with non‐nanoatrazine at 2000 g ha−1, which suggests that atrazine nanoencapsulation increased the short‐term residual effect of the herbicide. In a long‐term assay (60 days), a gradual recovery of soybean plants from atrazine phytotoxicity was observed. When comparing the effects of nano‐ and non‐nanoatrazine at the same concentrations, the growth and physiological parameters of soybean plants were mainly affected to the same extent. This indicates that encapsulation of atrazine into poly(ϵ‐caprolactone) nanocapsules did not enhance the long‐term residual effect of the herbicide on soybean. CONCLUSION: NC + ATZ could be applied for efficient weed control without additional phytotoxicity to susceptible crops compared with non‐nanoatrazine, provided that a safe interval is respected from atrazine application to sowing. © 2019 Society of Chemical Industry [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

The free radical nitric oxide (NO) plays important roles in plant growth and defense. Owing to its small size and lipophilicity, NO acts as a crucial signaling molecule in plants, crossing cell membranes and enhancing cell communication. Indeed, NO donors have been shown to modulate a variety of physiological processes, such as plant greening, seed germination, iron homeostasis and mitochondrial respiration. Recently, several papers have reported the protective actions upon application of low molecular weight NO donors in plants under abiotic stress. Exogenous NO is able to improve plant tolerance to several abiotic stresses, such as drought, salinity, metal toxicity, and extreme temperatures. This protection is assigned to the NO-mediated redox signaling in plants, which involves interplay with reactive oxygen species and modulation of gene expression and protein function. This review reports and discusses the recent advantages, pitfalls, challenges, and perspectives in the applications of low molecular weight NO donors in plants under abiotic stress. The combination of nanotechnology and NO donors as an efficient approach to protect plants under challenging environments is also discussed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

31. Mitochondrial Nitric Oxide Synthesis During Plant-Pathogen Interactions: Role of Nitrate Reductase in Providing Substrates.

Abstract

Nitric oxide (.NO) is an important signaling molecule that regulates plant metabolism and mediates defense responses against biotic and abiotic stresses. Although the cellular mechanisms by which .NO is generated in plants have been intensively investigated, they still remain controversial, particularly those implicated in plant resistance to pathogens. .NO can be synthesized in plants via the oxidation of l-arginine into l-citrulline by a nitric oxide synthase (NOS) that has no homology with the animal NOS family. In addition to l-arginine, nitrite is also an important source for .NO in plants. Since nitrate reductase (NR) activity is required for .NO production, reduction of nitrite catalyzed by the enzyme has been considered a major .NO source in plants. Recent experimental data, however, indicate that NR-defective mutant plants can synthesize .NO from exogenous nitrite. Nevertheless, NR-deficient plants lack enough endogenous substrates (l-arginine and nitrite) for adequate .NO synthesis, resulting in an impaired hypersensitive response (HR). These findings indicate that NR activity is an important source of substrates for .NO production. The main pathways for .NO production from l-arginine and nitrite in plants are located in mitochondria, suggesting that these organelles play a central role in .NO signaling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
