We investigate the dynamics of two-dimensional assemblies of rod-shaped magnetic colloids under the influence of an external rotating magnetic field. Using Molecular Dynamics, we simulate the formation of patterns that emerge based on the synchronization degree between the magnetic rods and the rotating field. We then explore the structural and dynamic characteristics of the resulting steady states, examining their evolution as a function of changes in the rods' aspect ratio, the strength of the external magnetic field, and its rotation frequency. Three distinct synchronization regimes of the rods with the magnetic field are clearly observed. A detailed set of phase diagrams illustrates the complex relationship between the magnitude of the external magnetic field and its rotation frequency and how these parameters govern the formation of unique self-organized structures., Comment: 10 pages, 9 figures

Stressed soft materials commonly present viscoelastic signatures in the form of power-law or exponential decay. Understanding the origins of such rheologic behaviors is crucial to find proper technological applications. Using an elastic network model of macromolecules immersed in a viscous fluid, we numerically reproduce those characteristic viscoelastic relaxations and show how the microscopic interactions determine the rheologic response. We find that exponential relaxations are indeed the most common behavior. However, power laws may arise when drag forces between the macromolecules and the fluid are sublinear, which is related to micro-deformations of the macromolecules.

Galaxy clusters are the largest gravitationally bound systems in the Universe and, as such, play an important role in cosmological studies. An important resource for studying their properties in a statistical manner are homogeneous and large image datasets covering diverse environments. In this sense, the wide-field images (1.4 deg^{2}) obtained by the Southern Photometric Local Universe Survey (S-PLUS) in 12 optical bands, constitute a valuable tool for that type of studies. Rheological responses are the most relevant features to describe soft matter. So far, such constitutive relations are still not well understood in terms of small scale properties, although this knowledge would help the design of synthetic and bio-materials. Here, we investigate, computational and analytically, how mesoscopic-scale interactions influence the macroscopic behavior of viscoelastic materials. We design a coarse-grained approach where the local elastic and viscous contributions can be controlled. Applying molecular dynamics simulations, we mimic real indentation assays. When elastic forces are dominant, our model reproduces the hertzian behavior. However, when friction increases, it restores the Standard Linear Solid model. We show how the response parameters depend on the microscopic elastic and viscous contributions. Moreover, our findings also suggest that the relaxation times, obtained in relaxation and oscillatory experiments, obey a universal behavior in viscoelastic materials.

We present the photometric calibration of the twelve optical passbands observed by the Javalambre Photometric Local Universe Survey (J-PLUS). The proposed calibration method has four steps: (i) definition of a high-quality set of calibration stars using Gaia information and available 3D dust maps; (ii) anchoring of the J-PLUS gri passbands to the Pan-STARRS photometric solution, accounting for the variation of the calibration with the position of the sources on the CCD; (iii) homogenization of the photometry in the other nine J-PLUS filters using the dust de-reddened instrumental stellar locus in (X - r) versus (g - i) colours, where X is the filter to calibrate. The zero point variation along the CCD in these filters was estimated with the distance to the stellar locus. Finally, (iv) the absolute colour calibration was obtained with the white dwarf locus. We performed a joint Bayesian modelling of eleven J-PLUS colour-colour diagrams using the theoretical white dwarf locus as reference. This provides the needed offsets to transform instrumental magnitudes to calibrated magnitudes outside the atmosphere. The uncertainty of the J-PLUS photometric calibration, estimated from duplicated objects observed in adjacent pointings and accounting for the absolute colour and flux calibration errors, are ~19 mmag in u, J0378 and J0395, ~11 mmag in J0410 and J0430, and ~8 mmag in g, J0515, r, J0660, i, J0861, and z. We present an optimized calibration method for the large area multi-filter J-PLUS project, reaching 1-2% accuracy within an area of 1 022 square degrees without the need for long observing calibration campaigns or constant atmospheric monitoring. We synthesized and characterized the colloidal suspensions of $FeO \cdot Fe_{(2-x)}Nd_{x}O_{3}$ nanoparticles with $x=0.00, 0.02, 0.04, 0.06 \text{ and }0.1.$ The effect of the $Fe^{3+}$ ion replacement by $Nd^{3+}$ on the crystal structure is in-depth studied, through X-ray diffraction (XRD) and the obtained cation distribution. The magnetic properties of the synthesized $FeO \cdot Fe_{(2-x)}Nd_{x}O_{3}$ nanoparticles also were investigated and corroborated by other physical methods. Our goal is to morphologically classify the sources identified in the images of the J-PLUS early data release (EDR) into compact (stars) or extended (galaxies) using a suited Bayesian classifier. J-PLUS sources exhibit two distinct populations in the r-band magnitude vs. concentration plane, corresponding to compact and extended sources. We modelled the two-population distribution with a skewed Gaussian for compact objects and a log-normal function for the extended ones. The derived model and the number density prior based on J-PLUS EDR data were used to estimate the Bayesian probability of a source to be star or galaxy. This procedure was applied pointing-by-pointing to account for varying observing conditions and sky position. Finally, we combined the morphological information from g, r, and i broad bands in order to improve the classification of low signal-to-noise sources. The derived probabilities are used to compute the pointing-by-pointing number counts of stars and galaxies. The former increases as we approach to the Milky Way disk, and the latter are similar across the probed area. The comparison with SDSS in the common regions is satisfactory up to r ~ 21, with consistent numbers of stars and galaxies, and consistent distributions in concentration and (g - i) colour spaces. We implement a morphological star/galaxy classifier based on PDF analysis, providing meaningful probabilities for J-PLUS sources to one magnitude deeper (r ~ 21) than a classical boolean classification. These probabilities are suited for the statistical study of 150k stars and 101k galaxies with 15 < r < 21 present in the 31.7 deg2 of the J-PLUS EDR. We study the contact process on spatially embedded networks, consisting of a regular square lattice with long-range connections. To generate the networks, a long-range connection is randomly added to each node $i$ of a square lattice, following the probability, $P_{ij}\sim{r_{ij}^{-\alpha}}$ , where $r_{ij}$ is the Manhattan distance between nodes $i$ and $j$, and the exponent $\alpha$ is a tunable parameter. Extensive Monte Carlo simulations and a finite-size scaling analysis for different values of $\alpha$ reveal a crossover from the mean-field to $2d$ Directed Percolation universality class with increasing $\alpha$, in the range $3<\alpha<4$., Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures

Water activity and its relationship with interactions stabilising lamellar stacks of mixed lipid bilayers in their fluid state are investigated by means of osmotic pressure measurements coupled with small-angle x-ray scattering. The (electrically-neutral) bilayers are composed of a mixture in various proportions of lecithin, a zwitterionic phospholipid, and Simulsol, a non-ionic cosurfactant with an ethoxylated polar head. For highly dehydrated samples the osmotic pressure profile always exhibits the "classical" exponential decay as hydration increases but, depending on Simulsol to lecithin ratio, it becomes either of the "bound" or "unbound" types for more water-swollen systems. A simple thermodynamic model is used for interpreting the results without resorting to the celebrated but elusive "hydration forces", Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures. We propose a modified Invasion Percolation (IP) model to simulate the infiltration of glue into a porous medium under gravity in 2D. Initially, the medium is saturated with air and then invaded by a fluid that has a hardening effect taking place from the interface towards the interior by contact with the air. To take into account that interfacial hardening, we use an IP model where capillary pressures of the growth sites are increased with time. In our model, if a site stays for a certain time at interface, it becomes a hard site and cannot be invaded anymore. That represents the glue interface becoming hard due to exposition with the air. Buoyancy forces are included in this system through the Bond number which represents the competition between the hydrostatic and capillary forces. We then compare our results with results from literature of non-hardening fluids in each regime of Bond number. We see that the invasion patterns change strongly with hardening while the non-hardening behavior remains basically not affected.

We investigate the role of disorder on the fracturing process of heterogeneous materials by means of a two-dimensional fuse network model. Our results in the extreme disorder limit reveal that the backbone of the fracture at collapse, namely the subset of the largest fracture that effectively halts the global current, has a fractal dimension of $1.22 \pm 0.01$. This exponent value is compatible with the universality class of several other physical models, including optimal paths under strong disorder, disordered polymers, watersheds and optimal path cracks on uncorrelated substrates, hulls of explosive percolation clusters, and strands of invasion percolation fronts. Moreover, we find that the fractal dimension of the largest fracture under extreme disorder, $d_f=1.86 \pm 0.01$, is outside the statistical error bar of standard percolation. This discrepancy is due to the appearance of trapped regions or cavities of all sizes that remain intact till the entire collapse of the fuse network, but are always accessible in the case of standard percolation. Finally, we quantify the role of disorder on the structure of the largest cluster, as well as on the backbone of the fracture, in terms of a distinctive transition from weak to strong disorder characterized by a new crossover exponent., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

The viscosity of AOT/water/decane water-in-oil microemulsions exhibits a well-known maximum as a function of water/AOT molar ratio, which is usually attributed to increased attractions among nearly spherical droplets. The maximum can be removed by adding salt or by changing the oil to CCl$_4$. Systematic small-angle X-ray scattering (SAXS) measurements have been used to monitor the structure of the microemulsion droplets in the composition regime where the maximum appears. On increasing the droplet concentration, the scattering intensity is found to scale with the inverse of the wavevector, a behavior which is consistent with cylindrical structures. The inverse wavevector scaling is not observed when the molar ratio is changed, moving the system away from the value corresponding to the viscosity maximum. It is also not present in the scattering from systems containing enough added salt to essentially eliminate the viscosity maximum. An asymptotic analysis of the SAXS data, complemented by some quantitative modeling, is consistent with cylindrical growth of droplets as their concentration is increased. Such elongated structures are familiar from related AOT systems in which the sodium counterion has been exchanged for a divalent one. However, the results of this study suggest that the formation of non-spherical aggregates at low molar ratios is an intrinsic property of AOT., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures

We investigate the effect of a temperature gradient on oil recovery in a two-dimensional pore-network model. The oil viscosity depends on temperature as, $\mu_o=exp(B/T)$, where $B$ is a physico-chemical parameter depending on the type of oil, and $T$ is the temperature. A temperature gradient is applied across the medium in the flow direction. Initially, the porous medium is saturated with oil and, then, another fluid is injected. We have considered two cases representing different injection strategies. In the first case, the invading fluid viscosity is constant (finite viscosity ratio) while in the second one, the invading fluid is inviscid (infinite viscosity ratio). Our results show that, for the case of finite viscosity ratio, recovery increases with $\Delta T$ independently on strength or sign of the gradient. For an infinite viscosity ratio, a positive temperature gradient is necessary to enhance recovery. Moreover, we show that, for $\Delta T>0$, the percentage of oil recovery generally decreases (increases) with $B$ for a finite (infinite) viscosity ratio. Finally, we also extend our results for infinite viscosity ratio to a three-dimensional porous media geometry.
