Inspired by the activism of young people in response to growing calls for climate justice, this discussion examines the rich possibilities to more meaningfully engage with the interconnections between human and environmental health in the AC:HPE. We explore how the Sustainability cross-curriculum priority is articulated throughout the Health and Physical Education learning area of the Australian Curriculum (AC:HPE). Adopting an ecofeminist framework based on the work of Val Plumwood, we follow the current of Sustainability as it flows through the AC:HPE, to reveal the limited ways it manifests, as well as the points at which greater inclusion is possible. Given our analysis, we focus on expanding definitions and interconnections in the AC policy language to resituate Sustainability in more ecological and ethical terms, and thereby activate new pedagogical possibilities for teachers and students.

Located within feminist scholarship on sport, leisure and physical cultures, this article explores our attempts to understand what conducting 'research with responsibility' means as White, settler-coloniser, immigrant women researching surfing, place and community in Aotearoa New Zealand. Taking inspiration from Hamilton's 'intersectional reflexivity' and Māori feminist scholars' discussion of (de)colonizing methodologies, we discuss the development of our intersectional, collaborative methodology to understand our relationships to place, community and surfing. This co-ethnographic approach helped us navigate the ethics and challenges of knowledge production in Aotearoa New Zealand, and enabled us to be aware of, and open to, different worldviews and ways of knowing. We argue this methodology has value in developing better recognition of our own privileges; understanding of the intersectional politics-of-place we are part of as researchers, and as community members; and of the assumptions, motivations and values that inform our research practices. Today, cultural studies theories, methods, and approaches are no longer solely the preserve of departments of arts, humanities, or social sciences. This article offers one example of learning how to teach cultural studies content to human movement studies (HMS) students. The author explores how she drew on various feminist and cultural studies theories and methods she was using in her PhD research project about women's experiences of recreational surfing to connect with students and engage them in an affective form of pedagogical exchange that challenges discourses of "Healthism." In this discussion, the author wishes to explore how learning to teach HMS undergraduates- in learning how to communicate, encourage critical thinking, and support students' personal growth and social awareness--also became an exploration of the role of teaching in universities, a commitment to academia as a career path, and a discovery of how research, theory and teaching practices can, and should, inform each other. The author writes that what she is advocating is the commitment by universities to include teaching opportunities as part of a PhD experience.

The authors reflect on the significant role of the Cultural Studies Association of Australasia (CSAA) and Cultural Studies as an academic discipline in Australia in celebration of the organization's 30th anniversary. Topics discussed include the growth of the CSAA, the commitment of the CSAA to its community of scholars, and the importance of attending the CSAA conference.

This article investigates how safety is experienced, navigated and cultivated by women on Instagram. Using qualitative interview data, we explore women's understanding and practices of keeping themselves and others safe when sharing information-rich images about their exercising bodies and fitness activities. Drawing on literatures from feminist leisure, sport and media studies, this article advances discussions about exercising women's negotiations of risk and safety by considering digitally-mediated fitness experiences and the uses of "visibility and vulnerability" for creating cultures and communities of physical and emotional safety online and offline. Findings identify that knowledge of Instagram's platform affordances and audiences, along with personal ethics, contribute to exercising women's decision-making when posting self-produced physical activity content. We extend current thinking about the operations of visibility and vulnerability for women online by identifying the significance of spatial and relational elements to generating women's feelings of safety on Instagram. Research analysing the operation of power within sport and physical activity has exposed the marginalisation and exclusion of women's sport in explicit and institutionalised ways. However, for women in recreational and alternative physical activities like surfing, sporting experiences lie outside institutionalised structures, thus requiring alternative surfing of conceptualising the processes of exclusionary power. In this paper, we focus on the voices of women recreational surfers to explore the changes which may or may not be occurring at smaller, more localised levels of women's engagement with surfing culture. An ethnographic methodology was employed to ask women how and why they engage in surfing and what it means for them, rather than asking questions based on existing assumptions. In presenting the data we draw upon the double meaning afforded by the term "to patronise" as a means of framing the complex ways that women continue to be differentiated in surfing culture, and the ways they respond to this. In the final section, we employ a Foucauldian analytic lens to explore the subtle normalising practices in which women are incited to recognise and undertake the practices of the valued masculine ideal of the "good surfer" through caring acts and advice offered by male surfers. This post-structuralist perspective offers space to think outside of simple resistance and reproduction, instead considering a complex space where women and men negotiate power in a range of ways from contextual, subjective positions. In conclusion, we argue that women recreational surfers are enacting alternative ways of operating within the power relations that circulate in the waves, creating ever-changing spaces for new ways of doing and knowing surfing to emerge.

To date, research about human-environmental health and wellbeing thinking has tended to centre the health and wellbeing benefits for humans from time spent in nature. That is, we remain most concerned with the benefits of 'nature' to human health. However, nature-based sports and physical activities, like swimming and surfing, challenge such human-centerdness by 'resituating' swimmers and surfers in multispecies ecologies. By creating opportunities for experiencing encounters that highlight our vulnerability, sports and physical activities offer an example of how ecologies are part of our everyday lives in real ways, and have great value in encouraging greater environmental awareness and care across communities. Drawing on ecofeminist frameworks, I have been exploring how recreational sports and physical activities shape participants' relationships to ocean and coastal ecologies. In this discussion I will draw on fieldwork and interview data with ocean swimmers and surfers to explore how the encounters they have when immersed in the ocean can create a sense of vulnerability that acts to remind us we are part of the ocean ecology. In this way, sport and leisure have great value for activating a greater sense of how human and environmental futures are interconnected. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Metrics, and increasingly altmetrics, are a pervasive aspect of academic life. A proliferation of digital tools available have seen greater emphasis on the quantification of the 'performance' of individual journals. Although metrics and altmetrics are justified in terms of increased accountability and transparency, there are significant inequities in the ways they are deployed. Key among these is the unsuitability of many popular metrics for assessing publications in the humanities and social sciences, as the data, algorithms and systems which support them cater to authorship and citation practices of the various science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. These issues are amplified for journals in the sociology of sport, which publish research by humanities and social science scholars whose work is quantified according to the standards of the health science departments in which they frequently work. In this discussion, we critically examine how common forms of metrics and altmetrics, including those produced by Web of Science, Scopus, Google Scholar, and Altmetric.com, are applied to available sociology of sport journals. We analyse and critique how different metric algorithms produce variable measures of performance for each of the journals in the field and reveal how other information available on these databases can augment our understanding of the sociology of sport publishing ecology. Far from advocating the value of metrics and altmetrics, our analysis is intended to arm scholars and journals with the information required to critically navigate the entanglement of metrics and altmetrics with neoliberalism, audit culture and digital technologies in universities. This article introduces the special issue (JSSI 45.1 and 45.2) on 'Understanding Blue Spaces' which examines relationships between blue spaces, sport, physical activity, and wellbeing. The articles progress conversations across humanities, social sciences and inter-disciplinary areas of research on diverse sporting practices, that span local to trans-national contexts. This collection offers new insights into politics, possibilities, and problems of the role of blue spaces in our wellbeing—individually, socially, and ecologically. In addition to outlining the 10 articles in the SI, which include ocean swimming, surfing, sailing/yachting, and waka ama paddling, we contextualize this work, discussing key thematic areas both across these papers, and in the wider interdisciplinary body of work on blue spaces, wellbeing, and sport. Specifically, we outline the role of physical activities and leisure practices in how we access, understand, experience, and develop relationships to seas and oceans, as well as to self, places and communities of human and non-human others. We also discuss the ways in which particular bodies, individuals, and communities (human and more-than-human) are marginalized or excluded, and the need for understanding concepts such as wellbeing, place, and self beyond dominant European traditions. This SI highlights how localised experiences of blue spaces can be, while emphasising the need to recognize diverse cultural, economic, geographic, sociodemographic, and political factors that contribute to a disconnect with, or exclusion from blue spaces, impacting who can use blue spaces, how they can be used, how they can be researched, and how power is reproduced and contested.
