Abstract

The performance of the proposed MATHUSLA detector as an instrument for studying the physics of cosmic rays by measuring extensive air showers is presented. The MATHUSLA detector is designed to observe and study the decay of long-lived particles produced at the pp interaction point of the CMS detector at CERN during the HL-LHC data-taking period. The proposed MATHUSLA detector will be composed of many layers of long scintillating bars that cannot measure more than one hit per bar and correctly report the hit coordinate in case of multiple hits. This study shows that adding a layer of RPC detectors with both analogue and digital readout significantly enhances the capabilities of MATHUSLA to measure the local densities and arrival times of charged particles at the front of air showers. We discuss open issues in cosmic-ray physics that the proposed MATHUSLA detector with an additional layer of RPC detectors could address and conclude by comparing with other air-shower facilities that measure cosmic rays in the PeV energy range., Comment: 64 pages, 58 figures

Abstract

We report on recent progress and next steps in the design of the proposed MATHUSLA Long Lived Particle (LLP) detector for the HL-LHC as part of the Snowmass 2021 process. Our understanding of backgrounds has greatly improved, aided by detailed simulation studies, and significant R&D has been performed on designing the scintillator detectors and understanding their performance. The collaboration is on track to complete a Technical Design Report, and there are many opportunities for interested new members to contribute towards the goal of designing and constructing MATHUSLA in time for HL-LHC collisions, which would increase the sensitivity to a large variety of highly motivated LLP signals by orders of magnitude., Comment: Contribution to Snowmass 2021 (EF09, EF10, IF6, IF9), 18 pages, 12 figures. v2: included additional endorsers. v3: updated affiliations. v4: added missing contributors as authors

Abstract

We report on recent progress in the design of the proposed MATHUSLA Long Lived Particle (LLP) detector for the HL-LHC, updating the information in the original Letter of Intent (LoI), see CDS:LHCC-I-031, arXiv:1811.00927. A suitable site has been identified at LHC Point 5 that is closer to the CMS Interaction Point (IP) than assumed in the LoI. The decay volume has been increased from 20 m to 25 m in height. Engineering studies have been made in order to locate much of the decay volume below ground, bringing the detector even closer to the IP. With these changes, a 100 m x 100 m detector has the same physics reach for large c$\tau$ as the 200 m x 200 m detector described in the LoI and other studies. The performance for small c$\tau$ is improved because of the proximity to the IP. Detector technology has also evolved while retaining the strip-like sensor geometry in Resistive Plate Chambers (RPC) described in the LoI. The present design uses extruded scintillator bars read out using wavelength shifting fibers and silicon photomultipliers (SiPM). Operations will be simpler and more robust with much lower operating voltages and without the use of greenhouse gases. Manufacturing is straightforward and should result in cost savings. Understanding of backgrounds has also significantly advanced, thanks to new simulation studies and measurements taken at the MATHUSLA test stand operating above ATLAS in 2018. Abstract

The LAGO (Latin American Giant Observatory) observatory is an experiment that spans over Latin America in a wide range of latitudes that gives different rigidity cut offs for the enter of cosmic rays in the atmosphere. The motivation of the Observatory is to study atmospheric radiation and space weather through the measurement of the secondary emission of low energy cosmic rays at ground level using Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCD). Abstract

The ingress of carbon dioxide CO2 into concrete is an issue that, unfortunately, does not have sufficient precedents at the national level for the execution of the Residual Service Life analysis of concrete structures. As a precursor element of steel corrosion, it is necessary to count on information on the behavior that concrete could have in Chile, according to the levels of aggressiveness expected for specific project locations. It was only in 2016 that the NCh170 Concrete Standard included this type of Exposure with Grade C1 as Mild Aggressiveness. This work presents a review of background information collected from various third-party and own works, along with measurements of Carbonation Rates in 20-year-old concretes made in the city of Santiago, relating them to Air Permeability measured in a non-destructive way, which allowed generating a proposal for the Classification of the Degree of Exposure to Carbonation. Abstract

Despite mounting evidence that dark matter (DM) exists in the Universe, its fundamental nature remains unknown. We present sensitivity estimates to detect DM particles with a future very-high-energy ($\gtrsim$ TeV) wide field-of-view gamma-ray observatory in the Southern Hemisphere, currently in its research and development phase under the name Southern Wide field-of-view Gamma-ray Observatory (SWGO). This observatory would search for gamma rays from the annihilation or decay of DM particles in many key targets in the Southern sky, such as the Galactic halo, several dwarf galaxies, including the promising Reticulum II, and the Large Magellanic Cloud. With a wide field of view and long exposures, such observatory will have unprecedented sensitivity to DM in the mass range of $\sim$100 GeV to a few PeV from observations of a large fraction of the Galactic halo around the Galactic Center and from Galactic subhalos targets. These results, combined with those from other present and future gamma-ray observatories, will likely probe the thermal relic annihilation cross section of Weakly Interacting Massive Particles for all masses from $\sim$80 TeV down to the GeV range in most annihilation channels.

El presente artículo tiene por objetivo dar a conocer la situación de los loteos irregulares en Chile, dando un análisis de los cuerpos normativos que se encargan de fijar normas para que estas subdivisiones sean apegadas a la ley y en cumplimiento de la misma, es decir, un enfoque particular de las normas urbanísticas, que conforman nuestro Derecho Urbanístico.Por otro lado, se fijará la vista en los procedimientos encargados del saneamiento y regularización de loteos irregulares, los objetivos y consecuencias que traen en la practica y cuál es la problemática actual respecto de este tipo de inmuebles.A la par con lo anterior, se dará a conocer cuál es el rol que tienen Conservadores de Bienes Raíces y los tribunales de justicia dentro del Derecho Urbanístico, principalmente en perspectiva de la Ley General de Urbanismo y Construcciones o DFL Nº 458, así como también en los procedimientos contenidos en la ley 16.741 y 20.234 respectivamente.

13. Efecto Antiangiogénico del Ácido Cafeico y Pinocembrina en el Proceso de Angiogénesis Fisiológica de Fetos de Pollo

Abstract

RESUMEN: La angiogénesis es el proceso por el cual se forman nuevos vasos sanguíneos a partir de otros ya existentes. Para que esto se lleve a cabo de forma correcta debe existir un balance entre los factores proangiogénicos y los factores antiangiogénicos dentro del microambiente tisular. Por otra parte, la existencia de productos químicos naturales como los polifenoles, que son capaces de adquirirse en la dieta, inducen a estos factores a intervenir en el proceso de angiogénesis. Se administraron los polifenoles en filtros de metilcelulosa sobre la membrana alantocoriónica de huevos White Leghorn, manteniendo el posterior desarrollo normal del feto. Se utilizaron 15 fetos de pollo fijados en formalina tamponada, a los cuales se extrajo el corazón. El procesamiento de las muestras de corazón se realizó a través de técnicas histológicas, histoquímicas e inmunohistoquímica. Finalmente se evaluó la presencia del VEGF y la capacidad de formar vasos sanguíneos bajo el tratamiento con los polifenoles. La inmunorreactividad fue cuantificada mediante Image J®. Los resultados indican que Ácido cafeico y Pinocembrina disminuyen la densidad microvascular y la expresión de VEGF en corazones de fetos de pollo tratados con estos polifenoles. Tanto el Ácido Cafeico como la Pinocembrina cumplen un rol inhibitorio en el proceso de angiogénesis fisiológica en corazón de pollo, pudiendo modular las vías de señalización mediadas por los VEGFR o modulando la disponibilidad de VEGF. Estos polifenoles podrían utilizarse para el estudio de otros tejidos asociados a angiogénesis patológica.

Abstract

It has been established that Gamma-Ray Bursts (GRB) can produce Very High Energy radiation (E > 100 GeV), opening a new window on the investigation of particle acceleration and radiation properties in the most energetic domain. We expect that next-generation instruments, such as the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA), will mark a huge improvement in their observation. However, constraints on the target visibility and the limited duty cycle of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) reduce their ability to react promptly to transient events and to characterise their general properties. Here we show that an instrument based on the Extensive Air Shower (EAS) array concept, proposed by the Southern Wide Field-of-view Gamma-ray Observatory (SWGO) Collaboration, has promising possibilities to detect and track VHE emission from GRBs. Observations made by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (Fermi-LAT) identified some events with a distinct spectral component, extending above $1\,$GeV or even $10\,$GeV, which can represent a substantial fraction of the emitted energy and also arise in early stages of the process. Using models based on these properties, we estimate the possibilities that a wide field of view and large effective area ground-based monitoring facility has to probe VHE emission from GRBs. We show that the ability to monitor VHE transients with a nearly continuous scanning of the sky grants an opportunity to access simultaneous electromagnetic counterparts to Multi-Messenger triggers up to cosmological scales, in a way that is not available to IACTs., Proceedings of the 37th International Cosmic-Ray Conference. Abstract

The SWGO Collaboration is in the process of designing and prototyping a wide field of view, high duty cycle complement to CTA and the existing ground-based particle detectors of the Northern Hemisphere (HAWC and LHAASO). In this contribution, we will compare the various technological options for designing the detector and present an overarching system design accommodating them. We will introduce a feasible reference configuration that is used for the first large-scale simulations and cost estimates, and show ongoing prototyping work focused on reaching a maintenance-free and cost-effective detector.

Abstract

The Southern Wide-field Gamma-ray Observatory (SWGO) will use the well-established and cost-effective technique of detecting Cherenkov light produced in water-filled detection units for TeV gamma-ray astronomy. Leveraging detector material reflectivity together with an optimised aspect ratio is an option to improve the performance of an array of such detector units. The double-layered Water Cherenkov Detector units comprise chambers with single photosensors in each. A reflective upper compartment enhances sensitivity to impinging secondary particles. A shallow lower compartment enables muon tagging and consequently improves the gamma hadron separation power of the observatory. Here we present detailed studies on the double-layered unit design.

Abstract

The Southern Wide-field Gamma-ray Observatory (SWGO) is a proposed ground-based gamma-ray detector that will be located in the Southern Hemisphere and is currently in its design phase. In this contribution, we will outline the prospects for Galactic science with this Observatory. Particular focus will be given to the detectability of extended sources, such as gamma-ray halos around pulsars; optimisation of the angular resolution to mitigate source confusion between known TeV sources; and studies of the energy resolution and sensitivity required to study the spectral features of PeVatrons at the highest energies. Abstract

Metabolic reprogramming is a key hallmark of cancer, but less is known about metabolic plasticity of the same tumor at different sites. Here, we investigated the metabolic adaptation of leukemia in two different microenvironments, the bone marrow and the central nervous system (CNS). We identified a metabolic signature of fatty acid synthesis in CNS leukemia, highlighting stearoyl-CoA desaturase (SCD) as a key player. In vivo SCD overexpression increases CNS disease, whereas genetic or pharmacological inhibition of SCD decreases CNS load. Overall, we demonstrated that leukemic cells dynamically rewire metabolic pathways to suit local conditions and that targeting these adaptations can be exploited therapeutically.

Le tecniche di monitoraggio possono estrarre dati accurati sul comportamento dei sistemi software. Se utilizzati nel campo, possono rivelare come le applicazioni si comportano in contesti del mondo reale e come i programmi sono effettivamente esercitati dai loro utenti. Tuttavia, la raccolta, l'elaborazione e la distribuzione dei dati sul campo devono essere eseguiti senza interruzioni e in modo non invasivo mentre gli utenti interagiscono con le loro applicazioni. Per limitare l'intrusività del monitoraggio sul campo, un approccio comune consiste nel ridurre la quantità di dati raccolti (ad esempio, in pochi eventi e in crash dump), che tuttavia possono influire gravemente sull'efficacia delle tecniche che sfruttano i dati sul campo. When used in the field, they can reveal how applications behave in real-world contexts and how programs are actually exercised by their users. However, the collection, processing, and distribution of field data must be done seamlessly and unobtrusively while users interact with their applications. To limit the intrusiveness of field monitoring a common approach is to reduce the amount of collected data (e.g., to rare events and to crash dumps), which, however, may severely affect the effectiveness of the techniques that exploit field data. This Ph.D. thesis investigates the trade-off between field monitoring and the degradation of the user experience in interactive applications, that is, applications that require user inputs to continue its operations. In particular, we identified two big challenges: to understand how the user perceives monitoring overhead and, to study how to collect data in a non-intrusive way without losing too much information. In brief, we provide three main contributions. In the first place, we present an empirical study aimed at quantifying if and to what extent the monitoring overhead introduced in an interactive application is perceived by users. The reported results can be exploited to carefully design analysis procedures running in the field. In particular, we realized that users do not perceive significant differences for an overhead of 80\% and seldom perceived an overhead of 140\%. Secondly, we introduce a monitoring framework for deriving comprehensive runtime data without affecting the quality of the user experience. The technique produces a finite state automaton that shows possible usages of the application from the events observed in the field. From the model, it is also possible to extract accurate and comprehensive traces that could be used to support various tasks, such as debugging, field failures reproduction and profiling. 24. Rabdomiolisis secundaria a intoxicación etílica: Caso clínico

Abstract

Introducción: La rabdomiolisis es un síndrome potencialmente letal caracterizado por la destrucción de fibras musculares estríadas. En niños es producido fundamentalmente por traumatismos, coma hiperosmolar no cetósico, miositis vírica, distonía o hipertermia maligna. Caso clínico: Varón de 14 años que es traído al servicio de Urgencias por disminución del nivel de conciencia secundaria a consumo de alcohol y cannabis. En la valoración inicial en nuestro centro se constatan hipotermia y una puntuación según la escala de Glasgow de 9. En el análisis bioquímico sanguíneo destacan una acidosis mixta y niveles de CPK de 12.260 U/L (CK-MB 132 U/L). Con los diagnósticos de coma etílico y rabdomiolisis se inicia administración de fluidoterapia intravenosa y alcalinización urinaria. Presentó una rápida mejoría neurológica con normalización en las primeras 12 h. Se mantuvo normotenso, con adecuada diuresis, balances negativos, normalización de los valores gasométricos y tiras reactivas de orina seriadas sin hallazgos patológicos. Se objetivó un nivel máximo de CPK sérica 24 h tras la ingesta (20.820 U/L), con descenso posterior hasta 6.261U/L a los 5 días, cuando se dio de alta. Discusión: La intoxicación etílica constituye una causa infrecuente de rabdomiolisis en pediatría. El principal objetivo terapéutico es evitar el fracaso renal agudo, por lo que se deben iniciar fluidoterapia agresiva y eventual alcalinización de la orina, manteniendo monitorizados las posibles alteraciones electrolíticas así como la presencia de mioglobinuria. En conclusión, la rabdomiolisis es una de las posibles complicaciones de la intoxicación etílica. Dada su potencial morbimortalidad, siempre debe ser tenida en cuenta.
