1. Asymmetric Opinion Formation of Emotional Eccitable Agents

Abstract: The bounded confidence model represents a widely adopted framework for modeling opinion dynamics wherein actors have a continuous-valued opinion and interact and approach their positions in the opinion space only if their opinions are within a specified confidence threshold. Here, we propose a novel framework where the confidence bound is determined by a decreasing function of their emotional arousal, an additional independent variable distinct from the opinion value. Additionally, our framework accounts for agents' ability to broadcast messages, with interactions influencing the timing of each other's message emissions. Our findings underscore the significant role of synchronization in shaping consensus formation. Furthermore, we demonstrate that variable confidence intervals alter the impact of step length when navigating the opinion space, leading to deviations from observations in the traditional Deffuant model., Comment: 21 pages, 18 figures. 2. Anisotropic transverse magnetoresistance temperature dependence in Mn3Ga Weyl semimetal with chiral anomaly

Abstract: Hexagonal antiferromagnetic D019-Mn3X (X = Sn, Ge, Ga) compounds, with a non-collinear Kagome spin structure, are Weyl semimetals exhibiting novel topological transport properties. The longitudinal magnetoresistance of c-oriented epitaxial Ru/Mn3Ga thin films exhibits a positive quadratic dependence on magnetic field over a wide range of temperatures. Here we describe the transverse magnetoresistance, with the field in the out-of-plane direction, for c-oriented epitaxial GaN (0001)/Mn3Ga films. There is a transition from a negative linear to a positive quadratic dependence on magnetic field in the temperature range from 200 K to 300 K. The electrical resistivity shows a metallic to semiconductor transition at 230 K. By applying the electric field along two perpendicular in-plane directions we find asymmetry in the magnetoresistance curves due to self-spin polarized currents created through magnetic octupole clusters. 3. $R^2$--Inflation Derived from 4d Strings, the Role of the Dilaton, and Turning the Swampland into a Mirage

Abstract: Based on a previously derived superstring model possessing a cosmological sector that mimics Starobinsky inflation, we analyze several questions addressed in the recent literature: the generation of an effective $R^2$-term, the stability of the sgoldstino , the modular symmetry of the inflaton potential and the large distance swampland conjecture. We first show that the presence of the string dilaton stabilizes the sgoldstino direction in the supersymmetric case and no modification of the K\"ahler potential is needed. This is a generic property of a large class of Starobinsky type models within the framework of no-scale supergravity. We then present an explicit example of a string derived inflaton potential where the large values of the inflaton field during inflation imply a decompactification of two extra dimensions, while the scale of inflation is generated by higher order $\alpha'$-corrections via expectation values that cancel the D-term of an anomalous $U(1)$ symmetry and break the modular symmetry of the scalar potential. As a result, the scale of inflation is much lower than the compactification scale which at the end of inflation is fixed at the free-fermionic self-dual point at an (approximate) supersymmetric minimum., Comment: 24 pages

4. OATH: Efficient and Flexible Zero-Knowledge Proofs of End-to-End ML Fairness

Abstract: Though there is much interest in fair AI systems, the problem of fairness noncompliance -- which concerns whether fair models are used in practice -- has received lesser attention. Zero-Knowledge Proofs of Fairness (ZKPoF) address fairness noncompliance by allowing a service provider to verify to external parties that their model serves diverse demographics equitably, with guaranteed confidentiality over proprietary model parameters and data. They have great potential for building public trust and effective AI regulation, but no previous techniques for ZKPoF are fit for real-world deployment. We present OATH, the first ZKPoF framework that is (i) deployably efficient with client-facing communication comparable to in-the-clear ML as a Service query answering, and an offline audit phase that verifies an asymptotically constant quantity of answered queries, (ii) deployably flexible with modularity for any score-based classifier given a zero-knowledge proof of correct inference, (iii) deployably secure with an end-to-end security model that guarantees confidentiality and fairness across training, inference, and audits. We show that OATH obtains strong robustness against malicious adversaries at concretely efficient parameter settings. Notably, OATH provides a 1343x improvement to runtime over previous work for neural network ZKPoF, and scales up to much larger models -- even DNNs with tens of millions of parameters.

5. The Role of the Curvaton Post-Planck

Abstract: The expected improvements in the precision of inflationary physics observables including the scalar spectral index $n_{s}$ and the tensor-to-scalar ratio $r$ will reveal more than just the viability of a particular model of inflation. In the presence of a curvaton field $\chi$, supposedly dead models of inflation can be resurrected as these observables are affected by curvaton perturbations. For currently successful models, improved constraints will enable us to constrain the properties of extra decaying scalar degrees of freedom produced during inflation. In this work, we demonstrate these diverse uses of a curvaton field with the most recent constraints on ($n_{s},r$) and two exemplary inflation models, the Starobinsky model, and a model of new inflation. Our analysis invokes three free parameters: the curvaton mass $m_{\chi}$, its decay rate $\Gamma_{\chi}$ the reheating temperature $T_{\rm RH}$ produced by inflaton decays. We systematically analyze possible post-inflationary era scenarios of a curvaton field. By projecting the most recent CMB data on ($n_{s},r$) into this parameter space, we can either set constraints on the curvaton parameters from successful models of inflation (so that the success is not spoiled) or determine the parameters which are able to save a model for which $n_{s}$ is predicted to be below the experimental data. We emphasize that the initial value of $\langle \chi^2 \rangle \propto H^4/m_\chi^2$ produced during inflation is determined from a stochastic approach and thus not a free parameter in our analysis. We also investigate the production of local non-Gaussianity $f_{NL}^{(\rm loc)}$ and apply current CMB constraints to the parameter space. Intriguingly, we find that a large value of $f_{NL}^{(\rm loc)}$ of $\mathcal{O}(1)$ can be produced for both of the two representative inflation models., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

6. Non-universal SUSY models, $g_\mu-2$, $m_H$ and dark matter

Abstract: We study the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, $g_\mu - 2 \equiv 2 a_\mu$, in the context of supersymmetric models beyond the CMSSM, where the unification of either the gaugino masses $M_{1,2,3}$ or sfermion and Higgs masses is relaxed, taking into account the measured mass of the Higgs boson, $m_H$, the cosmological dark matter density and the direct detection rate. We find that the model with non-unified gaugino masses can make a contribution $\Delta a_\mu\sim 20 \times 10^{-10}$ to the anomalous magnetic moment of the muon, for example if $M_{1,2} \sim 600$ GeV and $M_3\sim 8$ TeV. The model with non-universal sfermion and Higgs masses can provide even larger $\Delta a_\mu \sim 24 \times 10^{-10}$ if the sfermion masses for the first and the second generations are $ \sim 400 $ GeV and that of the third is $ \sim 8 $ TeV. We discuss the prospects for collider searches for supersymmetric particles in specific benchmark scenarios illustrating these possibilities, focusing in particular on the prospects for detecting the lighter smuon and the lightest neutralino., Comment: 34 pages, 17 figures

7. Inflaton Production of Scalar Dark Matter through Fluctuations and Scattering

Abstract: We study the effects on particle production of a Planck-suppressed coupling between the inflaton and a scalar dark matter candidate, $\chi$. In the absence of this coupling, the dominant source for the relic density of $\chi$ is the long wavelength modes produced from the scalar field fluctuations during inflation. In this case, there are strong constraints on the mass of the scalar and the reheating temperature after inflation from the present-day relic density of $\chi$ (assuming $\chi$ is stable). When a coupling $\sigma \phi^2 \chi^2$ is introduced, with $\sigma = {\tilde \sigma} m_\phi^2/ M_P^2 \sim 10^{-10} {\tilde \sigma}$, where $m_\phi$ is the inflaton mass, the allowed parameter space begins to open up considerably even for ${\tilde \sigma}$ as small as $\gtrsim 10^{-7}$. For ${\tilde \sigma} \gtrsim \frac{9}{16}$, particle production is dominated by the scattering of the inflaton condensate, either through single graviton exchange or the contact interaction between $\phi$ and $\chi$. In this regime, the range of allowed masses and reheating temperatures is maximal. For $0.004 < {\tilde \sigma} < 50$, constraints from isocurvature fluctuations are satisfied, and the production from parametric resonance can be neglected., Comment: 13 pages, 4 Figures

8. Inflaton decay in No-Scale Supergravity and Starobinsky-like models

Abstract: We consider the decay of the inflaton in Starobinsky-like models arising from either an $R+R^2$ theory of gravity or $N=1$ no-scale supergravity models. If Standard Model matter is simply introduced to the $R + R^2$ theory, the inflaton (which appears when the theory is conformally transformed to the Einstein frame) couples to matter predominantly in Standard Model Higgs kinetic terms. This will typically lead to a reheating temperature of $\sim 3 \times 10^9$~GeV. However, if the Standard Model Higgs is conformally coupled to curvature, the decay rate may be suppressed and vanishes for a conformal coupling $\xi = 1/6$. Nevertheless, inflaton decays through the conformal anomaly leading to a reheating temperature of order $10^8$~GeV. The Starobinsky potential may also arise in no-scale supergravity. In this case, the inflaton decays if there is a direct coupling of the inflaton to matter in the superpotential or to gauge fields through the gauge kinetic function. Abstract: Monochromatic gamma-ray signals constitute a potential smoking gun signature for annihilating or decaying dark matter particles that could relatively easily be distinguished from astrophysical or instrumental backgrounds. We provide an updated assessment of the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to such signals, based on observations of the Galactic centre region as well as of selected dwarf spheroidal galaxies. We find that current limits and detection prospects for dark matter masses above 300 GeV will be significantly improved, by up to an order of magnitude in the multi-TeV range. This demonstrates that CTA will set a new standard for gamma-ray astronomy also in this respect, as the world's largest and most sensitive high-energy gamma-ray observatory, in particular due to its exquisite energy resolution at TeV energies and the adopted observational strategy focussing on regions with large dark matter densities. Throughout our analysis, we use up-to-date instrument response functions, and we thoroughly model the effect of instrumental systematic uncertainties in our statistical treatment. Abstract: Given a CNF formula $\varphi$ with clauses $C_1, \dots, C_m$ over a set of variables $V$, a truth assignment $\mathbf{a} : V \to \{0, 1\}$ generates a binary sequence $\sigma_\varphi(\mathbf{a})=(C_1(\mathbf{a}), \ldots, C_m(\mathbf{a}))$, called a signature of $\varphi$, where $C_i(\mathbf{a})=1$ if clause $C_i$ evaluates to 1 under assignment $\mathbf{a}$, and $C_i(\mathbf{a})=0$ otherwise. Signatures and their associated generation problems have given rise to new yet promising research questions in algorithmic enumeration. In a recent paper, B\'erczi et al. interestingly proved that generating signatures of a CNF is tractable despite the fact that verifying a solution is hard. They also showed the hardness of finding maximal signatures of an arbitrary CNF due to the intractability of satisfiability in general. Their contribution leaves open the problem of efficiently generating maximal signatures for tractable classes of CNFs, i.e., those for which satisfiability can be solved in polynomial time. 14. Bare mass effects on the reheating process after inflation

Abstract: We consider the effects of a bare mass term for the inflaton, when the inflationary potential takes the form $V(\phi)= \lambda \phi^k$ about its minimum with $k \ge 4$. We concentrate on $k=4$, but discuss general cases as well. Further, we assume $\lambda \phi_{\rm end}^2 \gg m_\phi^2$, where $\phi_{\rm end}$ is the inflaton field value when the inflationary expansion ends. We show that the presence of a mass term (which may be present due to radiative corrections or supersymmetry breaking) can significantly alter the reheating process, as the equation of state of the inflaton condensate changes from $w_\phi=\frac{1}{3}$ to $w_\phi=0$ when $\lambda \phi^2$ drops below $m_\phi^2$. We show that for a mass $m_\phi \gtrsim T_{\rm RH}/250$, the mass term will dominate at reheating. We compute the effects on the reheating temperature for cases where reheating is due to inflaton decay (to fermions, scalars, or vectors) or to inflaton scattering (to scalars or vectors). For scattering to scalars and in the absence of a decay, we derive a strong upper limit to the inflaton bare mass $m_\phi < 350~{\rm MeV} (T_{\rm RH}/10^{10}~{\rm GeV})^{3/5}$, as there is always a residual inflaton background which acts as cold dark matter. 15. Minimal Production of Prompt Gravitational Waves during Reheating

Abstract: The inflationary reheating phase begins when accelerated expansion ends. As all Standard Model particles are coupled to gravity, gravitational interactions will lead to particle production. This includes the thermal bath, dark matter and gravitational radiation. Here, we compute the spectrum of gravitational waves from the inflatoncondensate during the initial phase of reheating. As particular examples of inflation, we consider the Starobinsky model and T-models, all of which are in good phenomenological agreement with CMB anisotropy measurements. The T-models are distinguished by the shape of the potential about its minimum and can be approximated by $V \sim \phi^k$, where $\phi$ is the inflaton. Interestingly, the shape of the gravitational wave spectrum (when observed) can be used to distinguish among the models considered. As we show, the Starobinsky model and T-models with $k=2$, provide very different spectra when compared to models with $k=4$ or $k>4$. Observation of multiple harmonics in the spectrum can be interpreted as a direct measurement of the inflaton mass. 16. A brittle constitutive law for long-term tectonic modeling based on sub-critical crack growth

Abstract: Adequate representations of brittle deformation (fracturing and faulting) are essential ingredients of long term tectonic simulations. Such models commonly rely on Mohr Coulomb plasticity coupled with prescribed softening of cohesion and/or friction with accumulated plastic strain. This approach captures fundamental properties of brittle failure, but is overly sensitive to empirical softening parameters that cannot be determined experimentally. Here we design a brittle constitutive law that captures key processes of brittle deformation, and can be straightforwardly implemented in standard geodynamic models. In our Sub Critically Altered Maxwell (SCAM) flow law, brittle failure begins with the accumulation of distributed brittle damage, which represents the sub critical lengthening of tensile micro cracks prompted by slip on pre existing shear defects. Damage progressively and permanently weakens the rock's elastic moduli, until cracks catastrophically interact and coalesce up to macroscopic failure. The model's micromechanical parameters can be fully calibrated against rock deformation experiments, alleviating the need for ad hoc softening parameters. Upon implementing the SCAM flow law in 2 D plane strain simulations of rock deformation experiments, we find that it can produce Coulomb oriented shear bands which originate as damage bands. SCAM models can also be used to extrapolate rock strength from laboratory to tectonic strain rates, and nuance the use of Byerlee's law as an upper bound on lithosphere stresses. We further show that SCAM models can be upscaled to simulate tectonic deformation of a 10 km thick brittle plate over millions of years. These features make the SCAM rheology a promising tool to further investigate the complexity of brittle behavior across scales.

Abstract: Collaborative machine learning (ML) is widely used to enable institutions to learn better models from distributed data. While collaborative approaches to learning intuitively protect user data, they remain vulnerable to either the server, the clients, or both, deviating from the protocol. Indeed, because the protocol is asymmetric, a malicious server can abuse its power to reconstruct client data points. Conversely, malicious clients can corrupt learning with malicious updates. Thus, both clients and servers require a guarantee when the other cannot be trusted to fully cooperate. In this work, we propose a peer-to-peer (P2P) learning scheme that is secure against malicious servers and robust to malicious clients. Our core contribution is a generic framework that transforms any (compatible) algorithm for robust aggregation of model updates to the setting where servers and clients can act maliciously. Finally, we demonstrate the computational efficiency of our approach even with 1-million parameter models trained by 100s of peers on standard datasets., Comment: Accepted at NeurIPS 2023

Abstract: The detection of gravitational waves from a binary neutron star merger by Advanced LIGO and Advanced Virgo (GW170817), along with the discovery of the electromagnetic counterparts of this gravitational wave event, ushered in a new era of multimessenger astronomy, providing the first direct evidence that BNS mergers are progenitors of short gamma-ray bursts (GRBs). Such events may also produce very-high-energy (VHE, > 100GeV) photons which have yet to be detected in coincidence with a gravitational wave signal. The Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) is a next-generation VHE observatory which aims to be indispensable in this search, with an unparalleled sensitivity and ability to slew anywhere on the sky within a few tens of seconds. New observing modes and follow-up strategies are being developed for CTA to rapidly cover localization areas of gravitational wave events that are typically larger than the CTA field of view. This work will evaluate and provide estimations on the expected number of of gravitational wave events that will be observable with CTA, considering both on- and off-axis emission. Abstract: Abstract Background Optical coherence tomography (OCT) enables high-resolution imaging of ocular structures in health and disease. Choroid thickness (CT) is a key vascular retinal parameter that can be assessed by OCT and might be relevant in the evaluation of the vascular component of cognitive decline. We aimed to investigate CT changes in a large cohort of individuals cognitive unimpaired (CU), with mild cognitive impairment due to Alzheimer's (MCI-AD), mild cognitive impairment due to cerebrovascular disease (MCI-Va), Alzheimer’s disease dementia (ADD), and vascular dementia (VaD). Methods Clinical, demographical, ophthalmological and OCT data from the Neuro-ophthalmological Research at Fundació ACE (NORFACE) project were analyzed. CT was assessed in the macula across nine Early Treatment Diabetic Retinopathy Study (ETDRS) quadrants, average thickness, total volume, and subfoveal choroidal thickness. Differences of CT among the five diagnostic groups were assessed in a multivariate regression model, adjusting for demographic and cardiovascular risk factors and OCT image quality. A comparison between manual and automatic CT measurements in a subset of participants was also performed. Results The study cohort comprised 1,280 participants: 301 CU, 196 MCI-AD, 112 MCI-Va, 578 ADD, and 93 VaD. CT was significantly increased in individuals with cognitive impairment compared to those CU, particularly in the VaD and MCI-Va groups and in the peripheral ETDRS regions. No significant differences were found in inner superior, center and subfoveal choroidal thickness. The interaction of sex and diagnosis had no effect in differentiating CT. Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE) scores were not correlated to CT. Manual and automated CT measurements showed good reliability. Discussion Our findings indicated that peripheral choroidal thickening, especially in patients with cerebrovascular disease, may serve as a potential choroidal biomarker for cognitive decline and suggest different pathogenic pathways in AD and VaD. Further research is required to explore CT as a reliable ocular biomarker for cognitive impairment.

Abstract: We compute the density of a spin-$\frac32$ particle, the raritron, produced at the end of inflation due to gravitational interactions. We consider a background inflaton condensate as the source of this production, mediated by the exchange of a graviton. This production greatly exceeds the gravitational production from the emergent thermal bath during reheating. The relic abundance limit sets an absolute minimum mass for a stable raritron, though there are also model dependent constraints imposed by unitarity. We also examine the case of gravitational production of a gravitino, taking into account the goldstino evolution during reheating. Abstract: Galaxy clusters are expected to be dark matter (DM) reservoirs and storage rooms for the cosmic-ray protons (CRp) that accumulate along the cluster's formation history. Accordingly, they are excellent targets to search for signals of DM annihilation and decay at gamma-ray energies and are predicted to be sources of large-scale gamma-ray emission due to hadronic interactions in the intracluster medium. We estimate the sensitivity of the Cherenkov Telescope Array (CTA) to detect diffuse gamma-ray emission from the Perseus galaxy cluster. We perform a detailed spatial and spectral modelling of the expected signal for the DM and the CRp components. For each, we compute the expected CTA sensitivity. The observing strategy of Perseus is also discussed. In the absence of a diffuse signal (non-detection), CTA should constrain the CRp to thermal energy ratio within the radius $R_{500}$ down to about $X_{500}<3\times 10^{-3}$, for a spatial CRp distribution that follows the thermal gas and a CRp spectral index $\alpha_{\rm CRp}=2.3$. Under the optimistic assumption of a pure hadronic origin of the Perseus radio mini-halo and depending on the assumed magnetic field profile, CTA should measure $\alpha_{\rm CRp}$ down to about $\Delta\alpha_{\rm CRp}\simeq 0.1$ and the CRp spatial distribution with 10% precision. Regarding DM, CTA should improve the current ground-based gamma-ray DM limits from clusters observations on the velocity-averaged annihilation cross-section by a factor of up to $\sim 5$, depending on the modelling of DM halo substructure. In the case of decay of DM particles, CTA will explore a new region of the parameter space, reaching models with $\tau_{\chi}>10^{27}$s for DM masses above 1 TeV. These constraints will provide unprecedented sensitivity to the physics of both CRp acceleration and transport at cluster scale and to TeV DM particle models, especially in the decay scenario., Comment: 93 pages (including author list, appendix and references), 143 figures. 34. Effects of Fragmentation on Post-Inflationary Reheating

Abstract: We consider the effects of fragmentation on the post-inflationary epoch of reheating. In simple single field models of inflation, an inflaton condensate undergoes an oscillatory phase once inflationary expansion ends. The equation of state of the condensate depends on the shape of the scalar potential, $V(\phi)$, about its minimum. Assuming $V(\phi) \sim \phi^k$, the equation of state parameter is given by $w = P_\phi/\rho_\phi = (k-2)/(k+2)$. The evolution of condensate and the reheating process depend on $k$. For $k \ge 4$, inflaton self-interactions may lead to the fragmentation of the condensate and alter the reheating process. Indeed, these self-interactions lead to the production of a massless gas of inflaton particles as $w$ relaxes to 1/3. If reheating occurs before fragmentation, the effects of fragmentation are harmless. We find, however, that the effects of fragmentation depend sensitively to the specific reheating process. Reheating through the decays to fermions is largely excluded since perturbative couplings would imply that fragmentation occurs before reheating and in fact could prevent reheating from completion. 35. Autonomous feedback stabilization of a cavity-coupled spin oscillator

Abstract: We report out-of-equilibrium stabilization of the collective spin of an atomic ensemble through autonomous feedback by a driven optical cavity. For a magnetic field applied at an angle to the cavity axis, dispersive coupling to the cavity provides sensitivity to a combination of the longitudinal and transverse spin. Coherent backaction by cavity light onto the atoms, conditioned by the optical cavity susceptibility, stabilizes the collective spin state at an arbitrary energy. The set point tracking and closed-loop gain spectrum of the feedback system are characterized and found to agree closely with analytic predictions.

37. Electroweak Loop Contributions to the Direct Detection of Wino Dark Matter

Abstract: Electroweak loop corrections to the matrix elements for the spin-independent scattering of cold dark matter particles on nuclei are generally small, typically below the uncertainty in the local density of cold dark matter. However, as shown in this paper, there are instances in which the electroweak loop corrections are relatively large, and change significantly the spin-independent dark matter scattering rate. An important example occurs when the dark matter particle is a wino, e.g., in anomaly-mediated supersymmetry breaking (AMSB) and pure gravity mediation (PGM) models. We find that the one-loop electroweak corrections to the spin-independent wino LSP scattering cross section generally interfere constructively with the tree-level contribution for AMSB models with negative Higgsino mixing, $\mu < 0$, and in PGM-like models for both signs of $\mu$, lifting the cross section out of the neutrino fog and into a range that is potentially detectable in the next generation of direct searches for cold dark matter scattering., Comment: 27 pages, 9 figures

38. Testing the Scalar Weak Gravity Conjecture in No-scale Supergravity

Abstract: We explore possible extensions of the Weak Gravity Conjecture (WGC) to scalar field theories. To avoid charged black hole remnants, the WGC requires the existence of a particle with a mass $m < g q M_P$, with charge $q$ and U(1) gauge coupling $g$, allowing the decay to shed the black hole charge. Although there is no obvious problem that arises in the absence of a U(1) charge, it has been postulated that gravity must remain the weakest force even when extended to scalar interactions. Quantifying this conjecture may be done by comparing scalar and gravitational amplitudes, or as we advocate here by comparing scattering cross sections. In theories with non-trivial field space geometries, by working out examples with perturbation theory around arbitrary field values and performing tadpole resummations, we argue that the conjecture must be applied only at the extrema of the scalar potential (when expressed in locally canonical coordinates). Abstract: The LHCb upgrade represents a major change of the experiment. The detectors have been almost completely renewed to allow running at an instantaneous luminosity five times larger than that of the previous running periods. Readout of all detectors into an all-software trigger is central to the new design, facilitating the reconstruction of events at the maximum LHC interaction rate, and their selection in real time. The experiment's tracking system has been completely upgraded with a new pixel vertex detector, a silicon tracker upstream of the dipole magnet and three scintillating fibre tracking stations downstream of the magnet. The whole photon detection system of the RICH detectors has been renewed and the readout electronics of the calorimeter and muon systems have been fully overhauled. The first stage of the all-software trigger is implemented on a GPU farm. The output of the trigger provides a combination of totally reconstructed physics objects, such as tracks and vertices, ready for final analysis, and of entire events which need further offline reprocessing. Abstract: Abstract Current evidence suggests that macroalgal-dominated habitats are important contributors to the oceanic carbon cycle, though the role of those formed by calcifiers remains controversial. Globally distributed coralline algal beds, built by pink coloured rhodoliths and maerl, cover extensive coastal shelf areas of the planet, but scarce information on their productivity, net carbon flux dynamics and carbonate deposits hampers assessing their contribution to the overall oceanic carbon cycle. Here, our data, covering large bathymetrical (2–51 m) and geographical ranges (53°N–27°S), show that coralline algal beds are highly productive habitats that can express substantial carbon uptake rates (28–1347 g C m−2 day−1), which vary in function of light availability and species composition and exceed reported estimates for other major macroalgal habitats. This high productivity, together with their substantial carbonate deposits (0.4–38 kilotons), renders coralline algal beds as highly relevant contributors to the present and future oceanic carbon cycle.

41. Sociocultural perceptions of physical activity and dietary habits for hypertension control: voices from adults in a rural sub-district of South Africa

Abstract: Abstract Background Over half of adults from rural South Africa are hypertensive. Apart from pharmaceutical treatment, lifestyle changes such as increasing physical activity and reducing dietary salt have been strongly advocated for the control of hypertension. However, the control rates of hypertension for adults in rural South Africa are low. In this paper we explore whether this is due to the recommended lifestyle intervention not aligning with the individual’s socio-cultural determinants of behaviour change. Aim To explore the social and cultural beliefs, perceptions and practices regarding physical activity and diet as a hypertension control intervention on hypertensive adults living in a rural sub-district in South Africa. Methods Nine focus group discussions were conducted with hypertensive adults aged 40 years and above from Bushbuckridge sub-district in Mpumalanga Province of South Africa using a semi-structured interview guide. Each session began with introductions of the discussion theme followed by a short discussion on what the participants know about hypertension and the normal blood pressure readings. Physical activity and dietary habits were then introduced as the main subject of discussion. Probing questions were used to get more insight on a specific topic. A thematic analysis approach was used to generate codes, categories, and themes. A manual approach to data analysis was chosen and data obtained through transcripts were analysed inductively. Findings Participants had a lack of knowledge about blood pressure normal values. Perceived causes of hypertension were alluded to psychosocial factors such as family and emotional-related issues. Physical activity practices were influenced by family and community members’ attitudes and gender roles. Factors which influenced dietary practices mainly involved affordability and availability of food. To control their hypertension, participants recommend eating certain foods, emotional control, taking medication, exercising, praying, correct food preparation, and performing house chores. Conclusion Lifestyle interventions to control hypertension for adults in a rural South African setting using physical activity promotion and dietary control must consider the beliefs related to hypertension control of this population.

Abstract: We explore the effect of neutron lifetime and its uncertainty on standard big-bang nucleosynthesis (BBN). BBN describes the cosmic production of the light nuclides $^1{\rm H}$, ${\rm D}$, $^3{\rm H}$+$^3{\rm He}$, $^4{\rm He}$, and $^7{\rm Li}$+$^7{\rm Be}$ in the first minutes of cosmic time. The neutron mean life $\tau_n$ has two roles in modern BBN calculations: (1) it normalizes the matrix element for weak $n \leftrightarrow p$ interconversions, and (2) it sets the rate of free neutron decay after the weak interactions freeze out. We review the history of the interplay between $\tau_n$ measurements and BBN, and present a study of the sensitivity of the light element abundances to the modern neutron lifetime measurements. We find that $\tau_n$ uncertainties dominate the predicted $^4{\rm He}$ error budget, but these theory errors remain smaller than the uncertainties in $^4{\rm He}$ observations, even with the dispersion in recent neutron lifetime measurements. For the other light-element predictions, $\tau_n$ contributes negligibly to their error budget. Turning the problem around, we combine present BBN and cosmic microwave background (CMB) determinations of the cosmic baryon density to $\textit{predict}$ a "cosmologically preferred" mean life of $\tau_{n}({\rm BBN+CMB}) = 870 \pm 16 \ \rm sec$, which is consistent with experimental mean life determinations. We go on to show that if future astronomical and cosmological helium observations can reach an uncertainty of $\sigma_{\rm obs}(Y_p) = 0.001$ in the $^4{\rm He}$ mass fraction $Y_p$, this could begin to discriminate between the mean life determinations., Comment: 27 pages, 11 figures

Abstract: We revisit the calculation of the electron, neutron, and proton electric dipole moments (EDMs) in the constrained minimal supersymmetric standard model (CMSSM). The relatively large mass of the Higgs boson, $m_H \simeq 125$ GeV coupled with the (as yet) lack of discovery of any supersymmetric particle at the LHC, has pushed the supersymmetry breaking scale to several TeV or higher. Though one might expect this decoupling to have relaxed completely any bounds on the two CP violating phases in the CMSSM ($\theta_\mu$ and $\theta_A$), the impressive experimental improvements in the limits on the EDMs (particularly the electron EDM) still allow us to set constraints of order $(0.01 - 0.1)\pi$ on $\theta_A$ and $(0.001 - 0.1)\pi$ on $\theta_\mu$. 45. Complexity of Reasoning with Cardinality Minimality Conditions

Abstract: Many AI-related reasoning problems are based on the problem of satisfiability of propositional formulas with some cardinality-minimality condition. While the complexity of the satisfiability problem (SAT) is well understood when considering systematically all fragments of propositional logic within Schaefer's framework (STOC 1978) this is not the case when such minimality condition is added. We consider the CardMinSat problem, which asks, given a formula F and an atom x, whether x is true in some cardinality-minimal model of F. We completely classify the computational complexity of the CardMinSat problem within Schaefer's framework, thus paving the way for a better understanding of the tractability frontier of many AI-related reasoning problems. To this end we use advanced algebraic tools developed by (Schnoor & Schnoor 2008) and (Lagerkvist 2014).

46. Supergravity Scattering Amplitudes

Abstract: Supergravity theories with non-minimal K\"ahler potentials are characterized by a non-trivial field space manifold with corresponding non-trivial kinetic terms. The scattering amplitudes in these theories can be calculated at fixed background field values by making a field redefinition to Riemann normal coordinates. Because of the K\"ahler structure of supergravity, a more compact method for calculating amplitudes is obtained by a redefinition to K\"ahler normal coordinates. We compare both methods and calculate the explicit transformations and amplitudes for several examples in the context of no-scale supergravity with one and two chiral superfields. 47. A Benchmark on Uncertainty Quantification for Deep Learning Prognostics

Abstract: Reliable uncertainty quantification on RUL prediction is crucial for informative decision-making in predictive maintenance. In this context, we assess some of the latest developments in the field of uncertainty quantification for prognostics deep learning. This includes the state-of-the-art variational inference algorithms for Bayesian neural networks (BNN) as well as popular alternatives such as Monte Carlo Dropout (MCD), deep ensembles (DE) and heteroscedastic neural networks (HNN). All the inference techniques share the same inception deep learning architecture as a functional model. We performed hyperparameter search to optimize the main variational and learning parameters of the algorithms. The performance of the methods is evaluated on a subset of the large NASA NCMAPSS dataset for aircraft engines. The assessment includes RUL prediction accuracy, the quality of predictive uncertainty, and the possibility to break down the total predictive uncertainty into its aleatoric and epistemic parts. The results show no method clearly outperforms the others in all the situations. Although all methods are close in terms of accuracy, we find differences in the way they estimate uncertainty. Thus, DE and MCD generally provide more conservative predictive uncertainty than BNN. Surprisingly, HNN can achieve strong results without the added training complexity and extra parameters of the BNN. For tasks like active learning where a separation of epistemic and aleatoric uncertainty is required, radial BNN and MCD seem the best options., Comment: 29 pages, 16 figures

Abstract: Despite the central role attributed to neuroinflammation in the etiology and pathobiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD), the direct link between levels of inflammatory mediators in blood and cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) compartments, as well as their potential implications for AD diagnosis and progression, remains inconclusive. Moreover, there is debate on whether inflammation has a protective or detrimental effect on disease onset and progression. Indeed, distinct immunological mechanisms may govern protective and damaging effects at early and late stages, respectively.This study aims to (i) identify inflammatory mediators demonstrating robust correlations between peripheral and central nervous system (CNS) compartments by means of plasma and CSF analysis, respectively, and (ii) assess their potential significance in the context of AD and disease progression from mild cognitive impairment (MCI) to dementia. To achieve this, we have examined the inflammatory profile of a well-defined subcohort comprising 485 individuals from the Ace Alzheimer Center Barcelona (ACE). Employing a hierarchical clustering approach, we thoroughly evaluated the intercompartmental correlations of 63 distinct inflammation mediators, quantified in paired CSF and plasma samples, using advanced SOMAscan technology. Abstract: AbstractBackground Some patients with severe asthma may benefit from treatment with biologics, but evidence has been mostly collected from randomized controlled trials (RCTs), in which patients’ characteristics are different from those encountered in asthma patients in the real-world setting. The aim of this study was to describe the clinical features of complete responders versus non-complete responders to long-term treatment with biologics in patients with severe asthma attended in routine daily practice.Methods Data of a cohort of 90 patients with severe asthma who were treated with biologics (omalizumab, benralizumab, and mepolizumab) for at least 12 months and were followed up to March 2022. Data recorded included clinical characteristics and effectiveness of treatment (exacerbation, Asthma Control Test [ACT] score, lung function, use of maintenance oral corticosteroids [mOCS]), FeNO, and blood eosinophils at baseline, at 12 months, and at the end of follow-up. Complete response is considered if, in addition to not presenting exacerbations or the use of mOCS, the ACT score was >20 and, the FEV1 >80% predicted.Results An improvement in all asthma control parameters was observed after 12 months of treatment and a mean follow-up of 55 months. After 12 months of treatment 27.2% of patients met the criteria of complete response and this percentage even increased to 35.3% at the end of follow-up. Long-term complete response was associated to better lung function with mepolizumab and omalizumab treatment and to less previous exacerbations in the benralizumab group. The main cause of not achieving a complete response was the persistence of an airflow obstructive pattern.Conclusions This study shows that omalizumab, benralizumab, and mepolizumab improved the clinical outcomes of patients with severe asthma in a clinic environment with similar effect sizes to RCTs in the long term follow-up. Airflow obstruction, however, was a predictor of a non-complete response to biologics.

50. Methylphenidate can help reduce weight, appetite, and food intake—a narrative review of adults’ anthropometric changes and feeding behaviors

Abstract: IntroductionObesity constitutes a complex global health that carries several comorbidities that include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and cancer. Current treatments, such as lifestyle modifications and bariatric surgery, are often difficult to implement or carry risks, creating a need for alternative approaches. Methylphenidate (MPH), a drug commonly used to treat Attention Deficit and Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), has shown potential in regulating dopamine levels to modulate appetite and feeding behaviors.MethodsThis narrative review evaluated the effect of MPH in reducing food intake, body weight, and anthropometric indicators in adults with obesity or overweight. Using the PICO method, 39 studies were selected, including 14 randomized controlled trials and 3 observational studies.ResultsMPH canblead to modest weight loss of 1–2% and significant appetite suppression, with stronger effects observed in women, who reported greater reductions in appetite and food cravings. Studies could remain underpowered to detect consistent effects in men.DiscussionEven if these results suggest MPH could be an option for treating obesity, concerns regarding its safety profile and long-term efficacy persist. This review underscores the need for further investigation to confirm MPH’s therapeutic potential, particularly through studies that address gender-specific responses and evaluate its sustainability as a weight management tool.
