The notion that closely related species resemble each other in ecological niche space (i.e., phylogenetic dependence) has been a long-standing, contentious paradigm in evolutionary biology, the incidence of which is important for predicting the ecosystem-level effects of species loss. Despite being examined across a multitude of terrestrial taxa, many aspects of niche conservatism have yet to be explored in marine species, especially for characteristics related to resource use and trophic behavior (Eltonian niche characteristics, ENCs). We combined ENCs derived from stable isotope ratios at assemblage- and species-levels with phylogenetic comparative methods, to test the hypotheses that benthic marine fishes (1) exhibit similar assemblage-wide ENCs regardless of geographic location and (2) display phylogenetically dependent ENCs at the species level. We used a 12-species sub-set of the monophyletic group Rajidae sampled from three independent assemblages (Central California, Gulf of Alaska, and Northwest Atlantic), which span two ocean basins. Assemblage-level ENCs implied low trophic diversity and high evenness, suggesting that Rajidae assemblages may exhibit a well-defined trophic role, a trend consistent regardless of geographic location. At the species level, we found evidence for phylogenetic dependence of ENCs relating to trophic diversity (i.e., isotopic niche width; SEAc). Whether individuals can be considered functional equivalents across assemblages is hard to ascertain because we did not detect a significant phylogenetic signal for ENCs relating to trophic function (e.g., trophic position). Thus, additional, complimentary approaches are required to further examine the phylogenetic dependence of species functionality. Our approach illustrates the potential of stable isotope-derived niche characteristics to provide insight on macroecological processes occurring across evolutionary time, which could help predict how assemblages may respond to the effects of species loss.

Advancing ecological restoration assessments requires a more detailed consideration of species interactions and ecosystem processes. Most restoration projects rely on a few metrics not always directly linked with ecological theory. Here, we used Odum's theory of ecosystem development to assess and compare the ecosystem structure and services of created marshes (4–6 years old) with preexisting, reference marshes in a brackish water region of the Mississippi River Delta. We built ecosystem models for created and reference marshes that integrated large datasets of stomach contents, stable isotopes, and taxa abundances. Despite strong resemblance in community structure, created marshes were at an earlier succession stage compared to the reference marshes, having lower biomass (including exploited species), higher biomass turnover and production, less dependence on detritus, lower material cycling, and less energy flowing through specialist pathways. Although preserving preexisting marshes should be a priority, created marshes may still be an important tool for the restoration of coastal areas and their ecosystem services. In addition, our results show that comparisons of species biodiversity alone may fail to capture essential differences in ecosystem processes between habitats, which reinforces the importance of ecosystem modeling approaches to assess restoration projects. Quantifying the multi‐dimensional nature of resource partitioning in‐situ represents a fundamental challenge for understanding how environmental conditions contribute to the co‐existence of sympatric species. For aquatic poikilotherms, the availability of temperatures at or near optima generally define the ranges and limitations of species biology and ecology. Specifically, how poikilotherms partition this abiotic resource remains a broader unknown in aquatic ecology.Alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus), deepwater sculpin (Myoxocephalus thompsonii), rainbow smelt (Osmerus mordax), and round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) co‐occur throughout Lake Ontario and are known to share common prey resources. Here, we used a combination of trophic tracers (stable isotopes), pollutants (polychlorinated biphenyls, PCBs), and bioenergetic modelling to illustrate resource partitioning of diet items and thermal habitat among Lake Ontario prey fish species. We predicted that the combined use of δ13C, δ15N, and PCBs will capture the multi‐dimensional nature of resource partitioning among coexisting species inhabiting similar compartments within this ecosystem.The δ13C and δ15N values confirmed our understanding of trophic relationships among these species. A bioenergetic model predicted temperature occupancies for each species and for individuals during the open water growing season when prey consumption rates are likely to be maximised and the PCB congener profiles were highly correlated with these predictions. Three‐dimensional niche modelling demonstrated that ecological tracer assimilation is probably a direct result of species behavioural thermoregulation during the open water growing season when temperatures are at or near physiological optima.These results demonstrate that the ability of aquatic poikilotherms to track optimal temperatures and exploit habitat and food resources is captured by their PCB congener profiles. Consumer PCB congener profiles integrate not only the specific prey resources consumed, but also the predominant thermal conditions under which those resources were acquired and assimilated and that subsequently regulate individual and species growth. Given their global ubiquity and capacity for interpretation under the assumptions applied to ecological tracers, consumer PCB profiles could greatly advance our understanding of the mechanisms regulating resource partitioning, especially among aquatic poikilotherms. Measures of trophic position ( TP) are critical for understanding food web interactions and human-mediated ecosystem disturbance. Nitrogen stable isotopes (δ15N) provide a powerful tool to estimate TP but are limited by a pragmatic assumption that isotope discrimination is constant (change in δ15N between predator and prey, Δ15N = 3.4‰), resulting in an additive framework that omits known Δ15N variation. Through meta-analysis, we determine narrowing discrimination from an empirical linear relationship between experimental Δ15N and δ15N values of prey consumed. The resulting scaled Δ15N framework estimated reliable TPs of zooplanktivores to tertiary piscivores congruent with known feeding relationships that radically alters the conventional structure of marine food webs. Apex predator TP estimates were markedly higher than currently assumed by whole-ecosystem models, indicating perceived food webs have been truncated and species-interactions over simplified. The scaled Δ15N framework will greatly improve the accuracy of trophic estimates widely used in ecosystem-based management. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Given the known effect of lipid content on δ13C values and the potential effect of urea on δ15N values, examining the effects of lipid extraction, which can potentially extract both, is of particular importance for elasmobranch isotope ecology. Through analysing paired δ13C, total %C, δ15N, total %N and C:N values of non-lipid extracted (BULK) and lipid extracted (LE) muscle samples from twenty-one elasmobranch species, we assessed whether lipid extraction was required: (i) to remove lipids given reported low lipid content and, (ii) to determine if δ15N values were affected and whether this relates to the retention of isotopically light urea by elasmobranchs. The mean (±SD) δ13C values of eight out of twenty-one species significantly increased following lipid extraction with two species, the Greenland (Somniosus microcephalus) and whale (Rhincodon typus) shark, showing a marked increase (5.0±0.4‰ and 3.3‰, respectively). The mean (±SD) and maximum increase in δ13C values were 0.6±1.2‰ and 5.9‰, respectively. For δ15N data, thirteen species showed a significant increase following lipid extraction and a concomitant reduction in total percent nitrogen (%N). The C:N ratio for these species also increased from unexpectedly low values of <3.0 to ~3.0, the value expected for pure protein. The mean and maximum observed increase in δ15N values were 0.6±0.6‰ and 2.3‰, respectively. There was no effect of increasing animal size on δ13C and δ15N difference (LE–BULK) for the two species examined. Field sampled animals (sampled immediately upon capture in the marine environment) showed a greater δ15N difference than animals sampled in the laboratory (sampled several hours after capture in the marine environment) (1.0±0.5‰ and 0.4±0.4‰ respectively), while estuarine sampled animals (sampled immediately) showed the smallest difference (0.1±0.6‰). The δ13C data demonstrate that lipid extraction is required to remove lipids from elasmobranch muscle tissue given both intra- and inter- species variability. In addition, the increase in δ15N values, decrease in %N and increase in C:N ratio indicate that lipid extraction is removing soluble urea. Given lower δ15N diet-tissue discrimination factors for large marine predators, removal of urea is required to elucidate accurate trophic position estimates and relative food web position of elasmobranchs and for diet reconstruction. It is recommended that investigators undertake lipid extraction trials on elasmobranch muscle tissue to determine effects on δ13C and δ15N values on a species-by-species basis.
