Recent accidents resulting in worker injury and radioactive contamination occurred due to pressurization of uranium yellowcake drums produced in the western U.S.A. The drums contained an X-ray amorphous reactive form of uranium oxide that may have contributed to the pressurization. Heating hydrated uranyl peroxides produced during in situ mining can produce an amorphous compound, as shown by X-ray powder diffraction of material from impacted drums. Subsequently, studtite, [(UO2)(O2)(H2O)2](H2O)2, was heated in the laboratory. Its thermal decomposition produced a hygroscopic anhydrous uranyl peroxide that reacts with water to release O2 gas and form metaschoepite, a uranyl-oxide hydrate. Quantum chemical calculations indicate that the most stable U2O7 conformer consists of two bent (UO2)(2+) uranyl ions bridged by a peroxide group bidentate and parallel to each uranyl ion, and a μ2-O atom, resulting in charge neutrality. A pair distribution function from neutron total scattering supports this structural model, as do (1)H- and (17)O-nuclear magnetic resonance spectra. The reactivity of U2O7 in water and with water in air is higher than that of other uranium oxides, and this can be both hazardous and potentially advantageous in the nuclear fuel cycle.

The new mineral bobfinchite (IMA2020-082), Na[(UO2)8O3(OH)11]·10H2O, was found in the Burro mine, Slick Rock district, San Miguel County, Colorado, U.S.A., where it occurs as an oxidation product of uraninite on asphaltite matrix in intimate association with gypsum, natrozippeite, metaschoepite, and uranopilite. Bobfinchite crystals are transparent to translucent, yellow, lozenge-shaped disks up to 0.3 mm wide. Crystals are flattened on [100] and exhibit the forms {100}, {011}, {021}, {0 2 1}, and {0 1 1}. Bobfinchite has a pale-yellow streak and emits very dim yellow fluorescence under 365 nm ultraviolet illumination. The crystals are brittle with very good {100} cleavage and irregular, stepped fracture. The Mohs hardness is ca. 2 based on scratch tests. The calculated density is 5.044 g/cm3 based on the empirical formula and 5.036 g/cm3 for the ideal formula. Bobfinchite is optically biaxial (–), with α = 1.690(5), β = 1.7205(5), and γ = 1.730(5) (white light). The measured 2V, estimated from the interference figure, is 55(5)° and the calculated value is 59.1°. Dispersion is moderate, r > ν; orientation: X = a, Y = b, Z = c; pleochroism: X nearly colorless, Y yellow, Z yellow; X < Y ≈Z. Electron microprobe analysis provided the empirical formula (Na0.99Pb0.02)[(UO2)7.99O3(OH)11]·10H2O. The five strongest X-ray powder diffraction lines are [dobs in Å(I)(hkl)]: 7.34(100)(200), 3.59(50)(024), 3.23(60)(224), 3.18(36)(240), and 2.01(23)(624,551,208,640,346). Bobfinchite is orthorhombic, Pbcn, a = 14.6249(9), b = 14.0389(10), c = 16.6923(10) Å, V = 3427.2(4) Å3, and Z = 4. The structure of bobfinchite (R1 = 0.0330 for 3770 I > 4σI) is built from uranyl oxide-hydroxide sheets that adopt the fourmarierite topology, with interlayer Na+ and H2O groups. Both the sheet and interlayer topology mimic those observed in natural and synthetic Na-metaschoepites studied previously, and as seen in other uranyl oxide hydrate minerals, charge balance is achieved at specific sites in the sheet through the substitution O2– ↔ (OH)–. Identification of radioactive materials is a critical goal of resource exploration, basic actinide science, and nuclear forensics, and we provide here new insights toward rapid, nondestructive analysis of uranium-containing minerals and technogenic phases. Raman and infrared spectroscopic data are powerful indicators of solid-phase U(VI) coordination chemistry. In addition, U(VI) minerals exhibit high chemical and structural diversity as artifacts of geochemical processes leading to ore formation. Spectral signals of axial U O 2 2 + U − O y l bond lengths and the influences of additional oxyanions on these values are well documented for uranium oxide and oxysalt minerals and technogenic phases. Additional insight regarding the underlying crystallographic structure and chemical composition of uranium materials can be extracted through a survey of all available Raman spectroscopic data for these phases. To this end, we have developed the Compendium of Uranium Raman and Infrared Experimental Spectra (CURIES). CURIES was compiled via a thorough review of literature and databases, and for mineral species that lack measured and recorded spectra, data were obtained either from museum and academic collections or by direct syntheses. Characteristic Raman spectroscopic features for subgroups of uranyl minerals within CURIES were elucidated using multivariate statistical analyses. In addition, average spectra for groups of uranyl minerals were determined, providing insight into common spectroscopic characteristics that are indicative of the structural origins from which they arise. As of publication, 275 mineral species and technogenic phases have been entered in CURIES, and of these, 83 phases have published spectra that have been included in the CURIES database. Data collection is ongoing, and we have triaged missing data sets to assess CURIES for completion and to identify mineral groups that lack representation and should therefore be prioritized for data acquisition and inclusion in the database. The new mineral libbyite (IMA2022-091), (NH4)2(Na2□)[(UO2)2(SO4)3(H2O)]2⋅7H2O, was found in the Blue Lizard mine, San Juan County, Utah, USA, where it occurs as tightly intergrown aggregates of light green–yellow equant crystals in a secondary assemblage with bobcookite, coquimbite, halotrichite, metavoltine, rhomboclase, römerite, tamarugite, voltaite and zincorietveldite. The streak is very pale green yellow and the fluorescence is strong green under 405 nm ultraviolet light. Crystals are transparent with vitreous lustre. The tenacity is brittle, the Mohs hardness is ~2½, the fracture is curved. The mineral is soluble in H2O and has a calculated density of 3.465 g⋅cm–3. The mineral is optically uniaxial (–) with ω = 1.581(2) and ɛ = 1.540(2). Electron microprobe analyses provided (NH4)1.92K0.08Na2.00U4.00S6.00O41H18.00. Libbyite is tetragonal, P 41212, a = 10.7037(11), c = 31.824(2) Å, V = 3646.0(8) Å3 and Z = 4. The new mineral zincorietveldite (IMA2022-070), Zn(UO2)(SO4)2(H2O)5, was found in the Blue Lizard mine, San Juan County, Utah, USA, where it occurs as yellow to orange–yellow blades in a secondary assemblage with bobcookite, coquimbite, halotrichite, libbyite, metavoltine, rhomboclase, römerite, tamarugite and voltaite. The streak is very pale yellow. Crystals are transparent with vitreous lustre. The tenacity is brittle, the Mohs hardness is ~2½ and the fracture is curved. Cleavage is excellent on {010}, good on {100} and fair on {001}. The mineral is easily soluble in H2O and has a calculated density of 3.376 g⋅cm–3. The mineral is optically biaxial (+) with α = 1.568(2), β = 1.577(2) and γ = 1.595(2); 2V = 70(1)°. Electron microprobe analyses provided (Zn0.720Mg0.109Fe0.091Mn0.046Co0.035)Σ1.00(UO2)(SO4)2(H2O)5. Zincorietveldite is orthorhombic, Pmn 21, a = 12.8712(9), b = 8.3148(4), c = 11.2959(4) Å, V = 1208.90(11) Å3 and Z = 4. Zincorietveldite is the Zn analogue of rietveldite. Navrotskyite (IMA 2019-026), K2Na10(UO2)3(SO4)9·2H2O, is a new potassium-sodium-uranyl-sulfate mineral from the Blue Lizard mine, San Juan County, Utah, USA. The new mineral occurs on sandstone and asphaltite matrix in close association with belakovskiite, blödite, bobcookite, changoite, fermiite, ferrinatrite, ilsemannite, ivsite, meisserite, pseudomeisserite-(NH4), seaborgite and tamarugite. Navrotskyite is orthorhombic, space group Pbcm (#57), with unit cell parameters a = 5.4456(13), b = 21.328(5), c = 33.439(8) Å, V = 3883.8(2) Å3 and Z = 4. Crystals are acicular tapered needles up to about 1 mm in length, typically occurring as radial sprays and tightly intergrown aggregates resembling fibre-optic bundles. Crystals are elongated on [100] and exhibit only the {012} prism form, resulting in diamond-shaped cross-sections. The terminations are generally not well-formed, but broken crystals are truncated by good {100} cleavage. No twinning was observed. Navrotskyite is pale greenish yellow in color, has a white or very pale-yellow streak and fluoresces neon yellow green under both long- and short-wave UV. It is transparent with vitreous to silky luster. The mineral exhibits a splintery, uneven fracture and has a Mohs hardness of about 2. The calculated density based on the empirical formula is 3.46 g/cm3. The mineral is optically biaxial (-), with α = 1.520(2), β = 1.557(2) and γ = 1.565(2) (white light). The measured 2V is 48.2(5)° and the calculated 2V is 48.9°. Dispersion is imperceptible and no pleochroism was observed. The optical orientation is X = a, Y = c, Z = b. The empirical formula is K2.06Na9.98U3.02S8.98O44H3.97 based on 44 O apfu. The eight strongest powder X-ray diffraction lines are [dobs Å(I)(hkl)]: 5.28(100)(110), 3.050(44)(049, 119), 10.70(43)(020), 3.845(36)(046,134,116), 3.225(30)(153), 3.533(29)(060,061,136), 2.822(29)(139) and 5.59(27) (006). The crystal structure of navrotskyite (R1 = 0.0289 for 4032 reflections with I > 2σI) contains infinite [(UO2) (SO4)3]4-chains that extend along [100] and that link to neighbouring chains via a complex network of K-O and Na-O bonds. Related topologies based on the same UL3-type chain are also observed in the minerals fermiite, meisserite and pseudomeisserite-(NH4), all of which occur in the same general assemblage as navrotskyite. Finchite (IMA2017-052), Sr(UO2)2(V2O8)·5H2O, is the first uranium mineral known to contain essential Sr. The new mineral occurs as yellow-green blades up to ~10 μm in length in surface outcrops of the calcrete-type uranium deposit at Sulfur Springs Draw, Martin County, Texas, U.S.A. Crystals of finchite were subsequently discovered underground in the Pandora mine, La Sal, San Juan County, Utah, U.S.A., as diamond-shaped golden-yellow crystals reaching up to 1 mm. The crystal structure of finchite from both localities was determined using single-crystal X‑ray diffraction and is orthorhombic, Pcan, with a = 10.363(6) Å, b = 8.498(5) Å, c = 16.250(9) Å, V = 1431.0(13) Å3, Z = 4 (R1 = 0.0555) from Sulfur Springs Draw; and a = 10.3898(16), b = 8.5326(14), c = 16.3765(3) Å, V = 1451.8(4) Å3, Z = 4 (R1 = 0.0600) from the Pandora mine. Electron-probe microanalysis provided the empirical formula (Sr0.88K0.17Ca0.10Mg0.07Al0.03Fe0.02)Σ1.20(UO2)2(V2.08O8)·5H2O for crystals from Sulfur Springs Draw, and (Sr0.50Ca0.28Ba0.22K0.05)Σ0.94(U0.99O2)2(V2.01O8)·5H2O for crystals from the Pandora mine, based on 17 O atoms per formula unit. The structure of finchite contains uranyl vanadate sheets based upon the francevillite topology. Finchite is a possible immobilization species for both uranium and the dangerous radionuclide 90Sr because of the relative insolubility of uranyl vanadate minerals in water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The new mineral chenowethite, Mg(H2O)6[(UO2)2(SO4)2(OH)2]·5H2O, was found in efflorescence crusts on tunnel walls at the Blue Lizard, Green Lizard and Markey uranium mines in Red Canyon, San Juan County, Utah, USA. The crystals are long, thin blades up to about 0.5 mm long, occurring in irregular sprays and subparallel groups. Chenowethite is pale green yellow. It has white streak, vitreous to silky luster, brittle tenacity, splintery and stepped fracture and two cleavages: {010} perfect and {001} good. It has a hardness (Mohs) of about 2 and is nonfluorescent in both long- and short-wave ultraviolet illumination. The density is 3.05(2) g/cm3. Optically, crystals are biaxial (−) with α = 1.530(2), β = 1.553(2) and γ = 1.565(2) (white light). The 2V is 72(2)° and dispersion is r > v (slight). The optical orientation is X = b, Y = a, Z = c and the mineral exhibits weak pleochroism in shades of pale green yellow: X < Y < Z. The Raman spectrum is consistent with the presence of UO22+, SO42− and OH–/H2O. The empirical formula from electron microprobe analysis and arranged in accordance with the structure is (Mg0.71Fe2+0.09Co0.05Ni0.04)∑0.89(H2O)6[(UO2)2(SO4)2(OH)2]·[(H2O)4.78(NH4)0.22]∑5.00. Chenowethite is orthorhombic, space group Cmcm; the unit-cell parameters are a = 6.951(2), b = 19.053(6), c = 16.372(5) Å, V = 2168.19(7) Å3 and Z = 4. The crystal structure of chenowethite (R1 = 0.0396 for 912 I > 2σI reflections) contains [(UO2)2(SO4)2(OH)2]2− sheets that are topologically equivalent to those in deliensite, feynmanite, greenlizardite, johannite, meitnerite and plášilite. Raman spectroscopy is one of the most useful techniques for studying the structure of UO2 and changes due to specific defects caused by doping, changes in stoichiometry, irradiation, or heating under oxidizing conditions. In this paper, we illustrate several aspects of the application of Raman techniques to the study of UO2, including the use of wavelength‐dependent excitation (455, 532, and 785 nm) to assess the effects of doping (Nd, Th, and Zr), ion irradiation, and in situ heating and oxidation (UO2 to U3O8). Additionally, we show examples of how correlative microscopy is possible using electron backscatter diffraction combined with Raman maps of specific vibration bands or of laser‐induced luminescence generated by rare‐earth dopants in the matrix. For each of these applications, we suggest optimal excitation wavelengths that vary depending on the desired data. Blue (455 nm) excitation tends to promote oxidation even at low powers, but because Raman spectra change little with doping, irradiation‐induced changes are easier to observe. Green (532 nm) excitation is optimal for observing electron–phonon resonance effects in UO2 and offers a good compromise for high‐temperature oxidation experiments, delivering high‐quality spectra for both UO2 and U3O8. Infrared (785 nm) excitation is best for observing "defect" bands associated with doping in UO2, as changes with irradiation are small. Raman spectroscopy is particularly suited for studying the stability of UO2 towards oxidation in the presence of dopants simulating fission products, where electron–phonon resonant effects, dopant ion luminescence, and mapping can be used together to investigate structural rearrangement as a function of temperature. Seaborgite (IMA2019-087), LiNa6K2(UO2)(SO4)5(SO3OH)(H2O), is a new mineral species from the Blue Lizard mine, Red Canyon, San Juan County, Utah, U.S.A. It is a secondary phase found on gypsum in association with copiapite, ferrinatrite, ivsite, metavoltine, and römerite. Seaborgite occurs in sprays of light-yellow, long flattened prisms or blades, up to about 0.2 mm in length. Crystals are elongated on [100], flattened on {010}, and exhibit the forms {100}, {010}, {001}, and {101}. The mineral is transparent with vitreous luster and very pale-yellow streak. It exhibits bright lime-green fluorescence under a 405 nm laser. The Mohs hardness is ~2½. The mineral has brittle tenacity, curved or conchoidal fracture, and one good cleavage on {100}. The measured density is 2.97(2) g/cm3. The mineral is immediately soluble in H2O at room temperature. The mineral is optically biaxial (–), α = 1.505(2), β = 1.522(2), γ = 1.536(2) (white light); 2Vmeas = 85(1)°; moderate r < v dispersion; orientation X ^ a ≈ 10°; pleochroic X colorless, Y and Z light green-yellow; X < Y ≈ Z. EPMA and LA-ICP-MS analyses of seaborgite undermeasured its Li, K, and Na. The empirical formula using Li, Na, and K based on the structure refinement is Li1.00Na5.81K2.19(UO2)(SO4)5(SO3OH)(H2O). Seaborgite is triclinic, P1, a = 5.4511(4), b = 14.4870(12), c = 15.8735(15) Å, α = 76.295(5), β = 81.439(6), γ = 85.511(6)°, V = 1203.07(18) Å3, and Z = 2. The structure (R1 = 0.0377 for 1935 I > 2σI) contains [(UO2)2(SO4)8]4– uranyl-sulfate clusters that are linked into a band by bridging LiO4 tetrahedra. The bands are linked through peripheral SO4 tetrahedra forming a thick heteropolyhedral layer. Channels within the layers contain a K site, while an additional K site, six Na sites, and an SO3OH group occupy the space between the heteropolyhedral layers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
