Abstract

Background: Recommendations by the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery regarding surgical care in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) require development to address the needs of children. The Global Initiative for Children’s Surgery (GICS) was founded in 2016 to identify solutions to problems in children’s surgery by utilizing the expertise of practitioners from around the world. This report details this unique process and underlying principles. Methods: Three global meetings convened providers of surgical services for children. Through working group meetings, participants reviewed the status of global children’s surgery to develop priorities and identify necessary resources for implementation. Working groups were formed under LMIC leadership to address specific priorities. By creating networking opportunities, GICS has promoted the development of LMIC-LMIC and HIC-LMIC partnerships. Results: GICS members identified priorities for children’s surgical care within four pillars: infrastructure, service delivery, training and research. Guidelines for provision of care at every healthcare level based on these pillars were created. Seventeen subspecialty, LMIC chaired working groups developed the Optimal Resources for Children’s Surgery (OReCS) document. The guidelines are stratified by subspecialty and level of health care: primary health center, first-, second- and third-level hospitals, and the national children’s hospital. The OReCS document delineates the personnel, equipment, facilities, procedures, training, research and quality improvement components at all levels of care. Conclusion: Worldwide collaboration with leadership by providers from LMICs holds the promise of improving children’s surgical care. GICS will continue to evolve in order to achieve the vision of safe, affordable, timely surgical care for all children.

17. Analysis of ramped square−wave voltammetry in the frequency domain

Abstract

We present a new approach to the analysis of square-wave voltammetry in the frequency domain. By extending our earlier work (J. Electroanal. Chem. 480 (2000) 133) on the numerical simulation of ac sine wave voltammetry, we are able to solve the governing equations when a square waveform of any amplitude is superimposed onto a linearly varying dc potential which is swept at a finite scan rate. By considering the numerical results in the frequency domain by using the fast Fourier transform (FFT) method, we are able to develop a very simple and general form of analysis which will theoretically allow consideration of reaction phenomena over a very wide range of timescales using a single potential sweep.

Abstract

The modulation of a ramped potential applied to a voltammetric electrode evokes two responses: a quasiperiodic 'ac' current of the same periodicity as the modulation, and a perturbation, of the underlying dc current. The latter is the subject of this article. Reasoning by analogy with an analytical result for reversible square-wave-modulated linear-potential-scan voltammetry, a sequence of credible arguments has allowed prediction of the de current for modulations of any waveform and of any amplitude. 34. Widespread Distribution of Fungivorus Aphelenchoides spp. in Blight Cankers on American Chestnut Trees

Abstract

Previously we showed in laboratory studies that the fungivorus nematode, Aphelenchoides hylurgi, was attracted to and fed upon the chestnut blight fungus, Cryphonectria parasitica, from American chestnut bark cankers and was a carrier of biocontrol, white hypovirulent C. parasitica strains. In the present field study, we recovered Aphelenchoides spp. in almost all (97.0 %) of 133 blight canker tissue assays (three 5-g samples each) from four eastern states. High mean population densities (227 to 474 nematodes per 5 g tissue) of Aphelenchoides spp. were recovered from cankers in Virginia, West Virginia, and Tennessee but not from New Hampshire (mean = 75 nematodes per 5 g tissue). Overall, most canker assays yielded population densities less than 200 nematodes per 5 g tissue. All of 12 very small or young cankers yielded a few to many Aphelenchoides spp. Regression analysis indicated greatest recovery of Aphelenchoides spp. occurred in the month of May (r = 0.94). The results indicate that Aphelenchoides spp. appear to be widespread in blight cankers on American chestnut trees and could play a role in biocontrol of chestnut blight.
